Why Children’s Books Need Variety, Diversity & Fun
Why Children’s Books Need Variety, Diversity & Fun
As PremioBooks.com enters its nineteenth year of educational book publishing, we thought it would be good to justify our existence. Not only do our award-winning, best-selling books feature Hispanic, Asian, black, white, Filipino, Indian, Pacific Islander, and Native American characters, they have been lauded by Kirkus, Publisher’s Weekly, The Horn Book, and School Library Journal. A quick…

I've been quiet these days... It's because I co-wrote and published a bilingual children's book set in my home country! Written in English and Spanish, my book is titled JUANITA and it's about the contemporary migrant experience in the Caribbean from a child's perspective.
Tumblr media
JUANITA is the ideal tool for both children and adults to learn English or Spanish as a second language. It features a main story, reading comprehension questions, vocabulary lists, and written reflection exercises.
And guess what! It's available right now worldwide on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback format!

Give us a purchase, rate, and review if you would like! For language learners and people looking for Hispanic and/or Caribbean representation, JUANITA is my recommendation to you!

If you are Spanish-speaking, what were your favorite books growing up? Maybe something that would be at the reading level of a 10-13 year old (though I’d also probably enjoy kids picture books or graphic novels/comics too).
I’m a native (US) English speaker and only have high school level Spanish. I haven’t used it much since so I’d have to start with the basics, but I really want to try.
I have a learning disability that makes retaining things like the spelling of vocabulary words very difficult. I was already flunking my English spelling tests in school, never mind Spanish. I had one teacher who would let me take tests orally but most had written tests where you were graded on spelling (and if the teacher was particularly sadistic, they’d make us write down the English and Spanish words and grade us on the spelling of both).
It left stuck on the idea that I was bad at learning new languages. But I’ve found that I can understand more Spanish when I read or listen to a conversation than I can write or speak it. Maybe trying a different learning style as an adult will help me.
I’d especially like historical fiction recs (or even non-fiction) so I can get a perspective from outside a (white) USAmerican worldview while I’m learning.
Much as I love fantasy and sci-fi, I kind of want to avoid anything that has its own in-universe jargon. I think I’d have a hard time following both a real unfamiliar language and an imaginary one.
I appreciate any suggestions!

Book Review: Opposites Opuestos
Opposites – Opuestosby Magda Garguláková, Ekaterina Gaigalova (Illustrator) 5 out of 5 stars There are many opposites in our world, and it is fun to compare and categorize things to make sense of what we see in every day life. Is something heavy or light? Is it curved or pointy? Is it loud or quiet, hard or soft, slow or fast, old or new? Continue reading Untitled

Book List -- C.E. Flores & Millie Flores
March had me puttering about in my garden and doing a bit of herb research, interspersed with dips in the pool and working on the La Yacata issue. This month, I hope to do the same. Meanwhile, I thought I’d remind you of the books I’ve already published in case you are looking for something to read. 💚 Juanita: a bilingual children's book 💚
This is a bilingual children's book, written in both English and Spanish, which is set in Trinidad and Tobago. I wrote this with three of my friends after working with Venezuelan migrant children in a few UNICEF-led programmes here in the Caribbean. Juanita is perfect for teaching your little ones Spanish and/or English language skills and about Caribbean culture! And there's a cat in it!
Juanita is set in Trinidad and Tobago, features Latina rep, West Indian rep, disability rep, abd is great at addressing the conflicting emotions migrant children often experience.

La Piñata Vacía
Tumblr media
