A huge part of her character is that she was bullied for being soft and feminine. She’s naturally a feminine person. And don’t try to tell me she doesn’t like being feminine when she literally dressed that way to feel safe AND when this comic exists-

like it’s okay if you hc Chihiro as a boy, to each their own or whatever, just like. Don’t deny that very important part of her character. Let Chihiro be soft 2k22

Hooooooly shit. The disrespect paid to Chihiro, my god.

I get that she's a serial killer, but Toko/Genocide Jill just outright gets transphobic when they learn that Chihiro was AMAB. Like Jesus Christ.

Now because that's been discovered, they're calling Chihiro a boy and using masculine pronouns. And given that other outlets use "they" for Chihiro, I don't think the games ever go deeper into her backstory or further explore whether Chihiro was transgender or a crossdresser or what.

Wow, this eats a metric buttload of ass. Goddamnit. The game is fun, but I feel like murdering this character, revealing them to be an AMAB person and then calling them a boy from that point onwards is super unnecessary.

I'm about to finish the trial, but if this doesn't play into Chihiro's murder and it's just an additional twist that doesn't change the fact that Byakura killed her, I'm gonna be pissed.

Unless they address it further, I personally think Chihiro was a trans girl.

Saying this away from the characters poll's tags since i imagine running them is tiring enough as is, but i'll still put it in the tags for the respective characters that I saw this behavior under the polls of regardless; Obviously I have my preferences and I have biases for characters but I sincerely love all four characters in the last round that were under the very aggressive campaigns (notably Kiyotaka, Mondo, Ibuki, and Chihiro), and while I've not been in the fandom since the fan translation days or anything like that (I'm sure the use of first names makes that much clear, lol), I've been in here long enough and have been open enough to recognize that there isn't really such thing as a "nothing character" in this series. The casts of these games just aren't designed that way. Sure, some characters may propel the plot along further than others but each character has this baseline amount of effort put into them for those who choose to go looking, so to act as if that isn't there for any handful of characters is a little regressive of the whole "every character can be the protagonist of their own story" writing philosophy DGRP has going on. It gets very tiring watching people confuse their personal distaste for certain characters as gospel, and then most notably, going to attack those who DO like those characters because said characters are not "enough", and are therefore not deserving of higher analysis. And that leads into the main problem here. There is absolutely NO excuse WHATSOEVER for calling people bigoted when they don't vote for the character that you like. There is NO possible justification for pushing the faults of the original writing of a story onto the fanbase for the crime of doing and seeing more with less-than-tactfully written character. If you feel as if you need to use harassment of others as a fear tactic to make them vote for a fictional character in a tumblr poll with absolutely no jurisdiction on anything, then I hate to say it, but maybe this fandom activity was just not made for you. If you truly feel that the collective voting for character A vs. character B in a tumblr poll is a personal attack against you or an entire group of people as a whole, then you need to reassess why exactly you feel that way and whether or not causing an uproar is necessary.

a lot of drama over character being damaging queer stereotype or just misunderstood on their really poignant progressive arc could be solved if the writers didnt resort to damaging stereotypes about the thing they didnt even intend in order to portray their progressive message

"ooh this character isnt trans they just crossdress cuz they feel weak due to the expectations put on their gender" yeah thats a good message. sucks that the way its written it is 1-1 to negative stereotypes about trans people though.

like i can understand that they didnt intend the character to be trans and i accept their message as good and progressive at its origin. there DEFINITELY was a better way to do this that isnt indistinguishable from excuses transphobes use to hate on real trans people though, just sayin'

Someone posted about how chihiro posts most often are about their gender or being trans (the op hcs them as trans too) and I AGREED- there’s SO MUCH MORE to chihiro than discourse or gender and I talked about that, using they/them pronouns for them, but got blocked because I hc chihiro as cis :(

Worrying about Halara Nightmare, Rain Code's non-binary beauty

Despite seemingly presenting as female at first impression, Halara Nightmare from (Master Detective Archive: Rain Code) is non-binary. Or, to be clearer about it, their character profile says that they "have no specified gender." However, they are described as "beautiful" to both men and women, which... yeah, I can see that. Halara definitely rocks that look.

Look at 'em sweeping that coat around. Every detective should rock an epic coat.

And they're more than a cool coat — Halara's a really compelling character! Like so many characters that've been born from the minds of Kazutaka Kodaka and his supporting team, Halara is an odd duck who possesses believable complexity thanks to a mix of positive and negative traits — some of which seem to come out of left field in the best way.

But here's the thing: I've been doing this for a while. I've seen all the raging discourse that follows video game/visual novel/anime characters such as Chihiro Fujisaki, Naoto Shirogane, and R/Luka Urushibara. So I know a significant chunk of players aren't going to just see Halara as another character participating in the larger narrative who happens to provide some nice diversity to the cast. Even though this is the kind of story where a massive amount of the cast isn't going to make it out alive, many would-be fans are going to take it extremely personally if Halara gets killed or — god forbid — winds up being a culprit at some point. Even MORESO if either of those happens in the first half of the game, for that matter. And worst of all... I can't even say that such a reaction would be wholly unjustified. Y'know?

That's why Halara isn't just a compelling non-binary character who could go any number of directions from my current point in the game; they're a powder keg waiting to go off. I love the representation, but... they also make me nervous.

I'm simultaneously both totally open to whatever story Kodaka wants to tell me AND crossing my fingers for Halara to avoid sparking a bunch of discourse.
