May - June Shopping - Part 1: manga & dj
It’s July already and a few new packages has arrived, so it is high time to get through the goodies I got during May and June.
The Hungarian Forint’s exchange rate is getting crappier and crappier, so I decided to order most of the things on my wishlist. I tried ENbook this time and even though I had to wait for all the titles to arrive, it was cheaper than BookDep. Of course, I still use mainly Book Depository for preorders - especially when I get the 10% off coupon.
I also started to get a few of the Japanese titles I wanted to buy for a while but did not for various reasons. Using Toranoana has many benefits: free shipping within Japan (to the proxy’s place - forwarding service for a single package is only 500 yen) and tons of tokuten (while stock lasts). Fangs 2 is finally out and it is as gorgeous as ever - can’t wait for volume 3 already, after such a mean cliffy at the end...
I bought the latest Pash! Illustration File - again full of amazing images from many of my favorite series.
Last but not least - a single dj made it to the Tora pack: a hot little Matcha Blossom piece. :3
Figures & other merch will be in another post.
Tbc..

One of Yoneda-sensei’s BL mangaka friends, Chiba Ryouko just published a manga essay about her son’s dyslexia “Uchi no ko wa ji ga kakenai” (My child doesn’t know how to write) to raise awareness for the reading disorder.
Sensei’s comment on Twitter:
“Chiba-san told me about it a few years back. At the time she talked about the issue pretty lightly, like it wasn’t a big deal, so I’m only learning now what she really went through back then. As a parent my ears (my eyes?) hurt at a few of the things that seem to have happened and that she also decided to draw. As an author I realize how much courage this must have taken her. I hope her book will help raise awareness (for dyslexia) in educational institutions.“
So, this tweet confirms it. Sensei is a mom! She also mentioned in an interview before that she was married.
And I’m sure you remember her almost 2-year hiatus back in 2009? That was her baby break. ^^

Discovered this last week, when I checked out her twitter to see what she’s been publishing recently, but didn’t have time to write about it. It’s Chiba Ryouko’s essay manga about the dyslexia of her firstborn. Essay manga are not really known in the West, they are usually less directed at manga fans anyway, more like at anyone with an interest in the topic. Essay manga are usually not even serialized in manga magazines, rather in life style or other magazines, and, more prominently recently, on the net. They are usually based on real experiences, but might have fictional additions. A great style in not a necessity for essay manga, even people with zero talent for drawing can write successful essay manga. Using deformed characters (like in the above pic) is pretty much the norm. The books are usually thinner and bigger than regular manga, but they are more expensive, and often in color. While essay manga is not really the world of mangaka, it’s always interesting, when an otherwise successful artist is releasing an essay manga. As opposed to non-mangaka their works also get exposure among manga fans. The most famous example for that might be Arakawa Hiromu, artist of Hagane no renkinjutsushi, Gin no saji, Arslan and so on, who wrote essay manga about her farmer family in Hokkaido.
I rarely read essay manga myself, but this one is by a BL mangaka I tend to follow, so I checked it out - it was serialized online and most chapters are still available. It deals with how she discovered her son can’t write the way he should, how he was diagnosed with dyslexia (sounded more like dysgraphia, but Japanese don’t seem to differentiate?), and what trials they had at school because of the lack of awareness and support. It was very interesting, but I was really surprised and annoyed by many things. First I was surprised that dyslexia is so unknown here in Japan! Even if there was probably no support in schools that time, I have already known about it when I was a child in the 80s or latest early 90s - and I’m not involved at all o_O And albeit not necessarily perfect (as everything in Hungary), but there is support for that in and outside of schools, and kids with any ‘dys-’ are naturally evaluated with respect to their disabilities.
From this essay manga it became clear there is no support at schools in Japan, what’s more, teachers don’t even know about it! Like what?! _Teachers_ don’t even know about a common learning disability?! I was really annoyed by the attitude of teachers in general - totally mechanical, without any interest in the kids as individual people. During elementary school Fuyu-kun (Chiba’s son) could attend special classes instead of normal ones, but starting junior high school it was not possible anymore. The whole attitude was like: ‘You cannot follow because of a disability? Who cares, your problem.’ I was also annoyed by a teacher, who gave Fuyu-kun bad marks in history, because he could write many names in hiragana only, and noted on the paper that it was evident to write in kanji every.single.time! Like, after the 10th time it would be more evident that there’s something else if a kid knows all the right answers but writes in hiragana mostly??? Or when they eventually went to talk to the homeroom teacher in high school, because the kid’s disability (or rather the lack of appropriate support at school) would have lead him to repeat a year. They informed the school at the beginning, but the homeroom teacher also didn’t have any idea about dyslexia and about what they should do at all o_O Like, there are so many disabilities but it seems like Japanese schools don’t even (want to) know and acknowledge these??? People are different even without that, you can’t just push a button and input knowledge into them like a machine…
Fuyu-kun was also so annoyingly Japanese with how he was always ‘bearing’ (gaman) with things and ‘trying harder’ (ganbaru), and also how he wanted to be treated the same way as others for a long while. As it turned out he was bullied for being different (I’m not even surprised :/), and couldn’t be made to understand that disclosing his disability give an understanding of why he was different. Of course might not have prevented bullying, cause kids are cruel, but I have a bad opinion about Japanese schools (not) handling bullying, too. Not to mention all this happened only a few years ago! It’s mentioned in the book that last year(!) finally a ruling was made that kids with disabilities should be supported at schools too - last year! All in all it was a very good, enlightening and infuriating read, I recommend it wholeheartedly. (Unrelated, but as you can see Fuyu-kun is drawn in such a cute way you can’t help but love him
On a side note, Chiba sensei was recently tweeting about how Fuyu-kun has not read the manga yet out of embarrassment (*fufufu*), and how she’s not showing it to her (junior high schooler) daughter, because her penname would be revealed. She didn’t tell her daughter she’s a BL mangaka or anything related to BL, but her daughter recently bought BL manga for the first time - she’s turning into a fujoshi without any influence from sensei XD Sensei is planning to come out to her after her entrance exams =D I can’t image how it’s possible to keep the details of your job in secret (especially if you work from home and I assume she is like most mangaka), but this is very sweet ^^

May Shopping
Another fruitful month, new YOI stuff got released and now I am really in desperate need of a new bookshelf (or two)...
I got a pretty big box full of mangas including Kyuugou’s oneshot (it.is.GORGEOUS), Ten Count’s last volume, Ogawa Chise’s, Uekawa Kichi’s, Chiba Ryouko’s, Mio Junta’s and Michinoku Atami’s latest, along with the adorable Tadaima Okaeri latest volume and the new cat hit: Oji-sama to Neko. I also bought the second part (and still tbc) of a student x teacher story by Kinoshita Keiko and the 3rd volume of Natsume Isaku’s Hanakoi Tsurane. As you can see I also got the YOI x Sanrio ‘artbook’ which is basically a really thin magazine but at least the pouch that came with it is adorbs.
The English BL manga publishing is devastatingly unfruitful (compared to e.g. the German or French market) so I only got the 6th volume of Awkward Silence and a Finder published by SuBLime.
As for merchandise: of course more YOI - the adorable 6 part clearfile set, the YuraYura metal charms (set of 9) and the Kiss & Cry area for my nendos (waiting for couch!Victor nendo to set it up properly). I am usually not into Nitotan but this BnHA daywear set was adorable and had most of the characters I wanted to have, I went for it.
to be continued...

Hi. I've been lurking in your blog since last year, and your list really helped to find golds of yaoi to read. I would like to ask for help in a yaoi title i've read a long time ago (i am not good w/ names) where the main couple are detectives. The uke has some kind of trauma and he ask for s*x w/ the seme to forget it. I remember that the uke was sent to rehabilitation and he grew his hair. Hahaha. Sorry for the vague description. Thanks is advance.
Hi! Actually your description is perfect, it’s not as vague and you got all the points spot on. The manga you’re finding is Knife by Chiba Ryouko.
