Alice Liddle: American McGee's Alice

MASSIVE TRIGGER WARNING: THESE GAMES AND THIS POST WILL BE DISCUSSING THEMES OF S.A, PEDOPHILIA, MURDER, MENTAL ILLNESS, SELF HARM, PROSTITUTION, AND MEDICAL ABUSE.

Alice Liddle of American McGee's Alice and its sequel, Madness Returns, is a severely mentally ill character in the games she stars in. She endures trauma after trauma, with next to no assistance, alone. In this post we will break down what happened to her, her reactions, and how she developed.

Disclaimer: Despite mental illness being the main theme here, I will not be attempting to diagnose Alice, as I am not professionally trained and she does not have an official, canon diagnosis of any kind. I will however make inferences.

For those unaware, American McGee's Alice is a horror twist on Alice in Wonderland, following the protagonist Alice. In this first game, you play as 18 year old Alice Liddle, who from eight years old to that point has been living in Rutledge Asylum in England. The game begins with the player introduced to the catalyst of Alice being in the asylum: a house fire.

In this fire, Alice is the only one to survive from her family, with her parents and sister, Lizzie, dying in the fire. This causes a massive snap in Alice's mind as she watches the house burn and townspeople surround her.

In this scene we are also introduced to the idea that Alice was likely already mentally ill, as when the fire begins, what wakes her isn't the smoke or screams, its Hatter and March Hare screaming in her dreams about the fire, begging her to wake up. (However, its likely it was just a framing device, but we do see its what woke her.)

From then on, Alice spent her time in the asylum, nearly comatose. She was catatonic and would only speak in shrieks and shrill screams. She'd have seizures and episodes of hysteria before falling unresponsive and mute again. Her doctor's notes also describe an incident where she "wielded a spoon like a knife and the orderlies, then turned the makeshift weapon in her own arms".

Needless to say, the fire that killed her family severely traumatized Alice, and she struggles heavily with possible PTSD and survivors guilt.

Alice in the first game also expresses suicidal ideation, or at the very least a passive desire to die. She's heard saying, "Save myself? From death, is that it? Is that why I've come here? I'm not afraid to die! At times I've welcomed death..."

And, "Everyone I love dies violently; unnaturally. I'm cursed! Why go on? I'll just hurt others."

The latter of these quotes is indicative of her guilt; it shows she blames herself for not just her her family's deaths, but others, and believes those she grows close to will also die horribly if they stay around her. She expresses she thinks people are better off without her.

In regards to Wonderlands occupants and how they relate to her fragile and broken psyche... American McGee has stated that all in some way represent her fragments mind and emotions. How, I don't think is explicitly stated beyond the Queen, but I have theories:

Cheshire: Her subconscious and manifestation of Dinah in her mind. Dinah lead her to safety in the fire, showing the way out. Chesh is guide that knows more than Alice consciously knows, but things she's got hidden in her mind. He tells her the clues she's seeing and picking up on subtleties she can't. That's why he uses riddles.

Hatter: Hatter is obsessive and rambling. He's a sort of representation of her doctor in the asylum, after all he runs one himself. He's paranoid and obsessed with time and loathes mechanical malfunctions. He may very well be a sort of ego aspect, where the Queen is super-ego. He could also likely be the manifestation of Alice's own paranoia and frustration surrounding her own "malfunctioning" mind.

Queen of Red Heart: She is Alice. She is the part of Alice that causes her the most grief and torment. She is what keeps Alice locked in her psychosis; a malevolent manifestation of super-ego. Cheshire compares her to a cancer in the body, which must be excised or Alice would die.

Jabberwock: A creature who taunts Alice and accuses her of not caring about her family. He is what taunts her about their deaths and says that she was, "in dream land taking tea with friends", and she, "couldn't be bothered". He is her guilt and self anger and he is there to remind her of this guilt constantly.

Caterpillar: He provides her wisdom giver. He takes things she sees and can help her recontexualize them. He is similar to Cheshire, but more to the forefront. He is also seemingly the calm part of her mind.

Tweedles: looking identical to the orderlies in Rutlidge, the Tweedles are cruel to Alice and lack any higher intelligence beyond orders. They are childishly cruel and likely have something to do with Alice's self punishment.

Rabbit: More obsessed with time than Hatter, Rabbit is a mostly absent guide who rushes ahead of Alice and he's very, very fidgety. He likely represents her conflict between anxiety and comfort. The comfort being from him being based on her favorite toy, and his face being easing to her. But he's very paranoid about time and danger.

Duchess: Initially a manifestation of the cruel nurse in charge of her, Nurse D, Duchess is a violent cannibal. It could be argued her outfit initially resembles a nurses outfit too. Later in the second game, she is seen in more revealing clothes and no longer eats people, and prefers pig now. Her "overbearing goodwill" and appearance now more represents her nanny, Nan Sharp.

While I do not believe these games are a 100% accurate depiction of mental illness and trauma, they do a good job showing the struggle between one's self and the inner machinations of their mind as they struggle with their mental health, and struggle to learn to cope on their own.

The second game is much better about the direct correlation between Alice's real struggles and Wonderland falling apart.

In Madness returns, we see an older Alice struggling in therapy as her doctor, Angus Bumby, tries to make her forget her past. She wants to forget everything rather than continue to struggle with it. We see she's still being abused and exploited by Nurse Witless, who's blackmailing her.

In Wonderland, we see the Corruption and the pollution destroying Wonderland piece by piece as the Dollmaker (Bumby's influence and brainwashing) takes over her mind bit by bit. We see her remembering her childhood and the past Bumby tried to erase, and we see her piece the truth together as she slowly banishes the Dollmaker.

By the end of MR, we see a confident Alice, the pieces of her fragmented life and mind put back together as Wonderland blossoms and Bumby dies via a train after Alice confronts him with his crimes.

Tl;Dr: While imperfect in their portrayal of mental illness, PTSD, and more, American McGees Alice And A:MR depict the grittiness, the despair, and the pain that can come with these things fairly well. It also depicts a woman struggling but succeeding in helping herself and bettering herself. These games revolve around facing your issues head on and healing. Their use of symbology is fantastic in my opinion.

Eh, this is just something I wanna get off my chest. Ngl...I don't really like or enjoy Homestuck itself anymore. I like the concepts and the ideas of some of the characters, along with the content and concepts that the fandom churns out. I feel like...I feel a lot of things looking back on it could of been handled better, and I can't get myself into it enough again to even read Homestuck 2 or play any of the Friendsim or Pesterquest games.

So...yeah. It's been fun but I don't think I'm gonna be apart of this fandom anymore. I ain't really a much of a fan anymore if you get me here. Might reblog art occasionally if it's nice, cause hey, the artist worked hard on that, but I'm not in this fandom anymore.

Some therianthropes look down on humans, and some are wary and rather fearful of them. But Chesh is neither. He typically finds humans very entertaining. They’re slower and weaker, and most of them are easy to trick. It’s not that he thinks lesser of them as such, its just more like he views them as being a little sibling thats so very tempting to pick on. And he’s grown up in a Leap, a pack of leopards, where they have their own ways of doing things and don’t really branch out into the human society for their earlier lives. So humans are interesting to him and still kinda ‘new’ in some ways, and he’s fascinated by the way they do things and get by without use of superior strength and abilities or the aid of magic.

of course, his people are living in secret from the humans, and the question of ‘how would the humans treat them if it was all out in the open’ has been hanging around for centuries. he has more hope for a positive outcome than most shifters do, and so he’s not so scared about walking the line of letting a human find out about what he is, despite the warnings of his brother.

[Hello everyone, Chesh Kuro here.] [Now normally I use this blog to promote NSFW quotes...but I figured I would let you all know as of now, the VA for Peter in the game Your Boyfriend will be replaced immediately. Let’s just say that uh...his jokes were rather inappropriate and despite being told numerous of times to NOT do that he keeps going at it. It’s mostly joking about a very touchy subject: trans suicide. I only heard about that from the server that I’m in. And let me tell ya...it’s a lot to unpack and I even got confirmation about the replacement VA for him from Fuboo herself. So it was a bit of a blow to me as I never thought something like this will happen...but...it is what it is. I also tried to reach out to Matt to get his side of the story but nothing has come up. Now that I’m typing this up, I just got word that Matt is going to release a statement on his end and will gladly leave the Your Boyfriend community.]

[So no matter what, I will continue to show support for Fuboo and her game. What Matt has said I will not condone, however, I do believe that he will change and learn to grow as a person further on down the road. I will not show any ill will to him, nor will I ever show any sign of wanting him dead; I sure as FUCK will not be those type of people. Overall, despite the crude humor of his, he is still has a good heart. It’s so funny how they’d meant to get to the house, back behind closed doors. But there’s a quiet sort of hunger that’s been swelling now that Matthew knows what to do with it. Samual is warm and solid and god he’s not sure it it’s the costume or the fact he’d followed Stella’s advice or -- or -- “Sam, f-fuck, Sam slow down,” he gasps, no, whines it breathlessly in the stuffy air of the old van because they’d scarcely made it inside before Sam’s hands wandered and Matthew’s control dissipated into nothing. Somewhere between those thumbs running along garters and up up up, his knees gave out. His wig is falling off, hair knotted up and one of his gloves is somewhere in the front seat.

And Sam-

“Fuck,” Matthew croaks out with a choked whine, fingers twisted into dark hair while he looks up at him with blown pupils and spread thighs. His mouth aches, chest heaving as he tries to catch his breath. Only he says it and all too soon is pulling Sam closer, chasing his mouth with a whine. A leg is hooked over his hip and those familiar hands have him trembling. All the times he’s slept with other men it’d never really prepared him for this, for Sam. And maybe because he’d been so fucking blindsided by his feelings when it’d all clicked. “Sam, fuck Sam.” Hands on his thighs have him arching, face hot when the short skirt rides up and lacey white panties are shown off. Matthew is sure they’ll end up ripped somewhere in here too because of the look in those dark eyes.

There’s so much purple left discarded somewhere near their feet and all he can taste is strawberries and Sam. Some more random facts. (part 1 here)

- He really likes astrology and reading horoscopes, he thinks they’re really fun and cool tbh. When you’re close with him, he’ll probably take note of your sign and read your horoscopes and related things to help look after you better.

- He is full of Nonsense and is a big silly that sleepy/drunk calls and texts people, usually his poor big bro Kav (see here smh). He is a super affectionate drunk actually and tends to blab on rather incoherently about how much he loves his brother (while forgetting he’s actually talking to him). Half way through such a ramble, he’ll start thinking about food and he’ll be talking about how much he loves ‘him’/’her’ (the food item) which can make that particular convo very awkward if it’s not clear soon what he’s talking about.

- Clothes are a necessary evil, so he likes to take his off at any and every opportunity. If you say “make yourself at home” or something like that, off come his clothes (some of them at least), because honestly as soon as he gets home, he strips down at least to his underwear.

- He usually plays it kinda cool and flirty, but he’s actually a huge loser around people he’s close to and he’s really not afraid to fangirl around them. Like if you’re his friend and you have some exciting news, he will jump up and down, clap and practically squeal about it with you. smh.

- He has a lotta energy and loves music and dancing, so he’ll often dance around. when he’s at home, he defs does the dancing/sliding around thing while listening to music. it’s a whole production/show to him, 150% effort for an invisible audience. honestly im embarrassed

- His house is partway into the forest and it kinda blends in. The shfiters are big on natural looking stuff and eco friendly. His house is really cool, there’s all these ‘trees’ inside that make it look like the forest and house have merged. And there’s big windows and all but with the stuff that makes it so you cant see into the house but can see out. And its all soundproofed so he’s not disturbing the forest creatures (or his neighbours).

- He has some big clawmark scars on his arm that he got as a young teenager from his father, and he was very very ashamed of them for ages and always hid them, but he slowly grew out of that and doesn’t actively hide them but he still gets kinda sad/iffy if someone notices.

- He’s street-smart not booksmart, a very practical learner and one with a bad attention span, so he struggled in school and always feels incredibly stupid when academic-y stuff comes up or he’s around someone that is all smart and they’re condescending about it or something

Some additional notes

Hill Top Road is going to be a Nest equivalent. It felt fitting for Martin's story to start there. Annabelle is going to be the Pretender, but I'm unsure who is going to ge the Rain Coat Girl equivalent.

Since Jon was in a Noone situation, I left out a few locations. The Circus is one of the more obvious ones. Since I wanna save some for places Jon had been in his dreams before entering Nowhere.

If home is where the heart is why is mine shattered across continents I've never been to or may never go to? If home is where the heart is why did I only find my home a couple of months ago when I made friends on this website? Home is where the heart is I've heard told this saying for years now maybe even a decade. Then why did I lose the home that was building when my sister moved back into our house? Why is my home so far away, so unreachable and distant? If I can't visit my home does that mean it doesn't exist? If my home doesn't exist does that mean neither does my heart? Therefore making me emotionless and useless? Why do people say home is where the heart is when sometimes people never find where their heart lies? Shouldn't your home be where you feel safest? Even if your safest is online with friends you've never seen in person before? Even if it's an anon who you can only talk to a couple times a month? Why is our home considered where our heart is when it should be where we feel safest.
