Shared from @historicminnesota . The Laverty-Martindale House is known as the best example of the Italianate style in La Crosse. Thomas Laverty started building a house on the site in 1859 but was unable to finish it when he returned home disabled from serving in the Civil War. In 1868, Stephen Martindale purchased the house and completed it. More additions and alterations were made in 1884, and the home remained in the family until 1977. Just imagine all the land that surrounded this house when it was first built. It really has the feeling of an old farmhouse, and maybe that's why I love it so much. After a lovely day at the beach, we nipped into Rye for bite to eat before heading home. Today: Marchpane. 📚 This cute independent bookstore is said to be the premier specialist in Lewis Carroll/Alice in Wonderland/Alice Liddell, books and ephemera in the West End. Since 1989, the store has become specialist in children's and illustrated books from the 18th century up to the present day. On their shelves you can find early publications from Newbery's moral tales to signed first editions of Harry Potter. I have spotted a lovely orange cloth, 1906 edition of “Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens”, currently for sale. Take a visit next time you are in London. 📚 Cecil Court itself is the Diagon Alley - the uniquely described alleyway in Harry Potter - of real-world London. It is a treasure trove of rare and beautiful stores. What was your favourite book as a child? We have heard the term 'Barowari Durga Puja' a lot. But what is Barowari? This term originated in Guptipara, a town located in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, when a few friends were not allowed to take part in a household Durga Puja. In the 18th century, Durga Puja was primarily celebrated by the zamindars and other rich families in and around Calcutta. So when these group of people weren't allowed in the Durga Puja held by the Sen Bari, they formed the first publicly organized community Durga Puja which came to be known as Barowari meaning twelve friends (Baro = 12, Yaari = Friends). Just another drive around Monday. 🎶🎶 An out of the way grand mansion, the William Banholzer House was built in 1885 and designed by C. Edward Dressel at a cost of $10,000. Banholzer was one of the local beer barons of Saint Paul, taking over a small brewery owned by his father in the late 1870s and growing it to a production of 12,000 barrels a year of North Mississippi Beer. The sandstone caves beneath the property were used for cooling kegs. At the time, his beer was one of the top five beers in St Paul. He died in 1897 at the age of 48 and so did the brewery. The home is now part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation campus, a treatment center for drug and alcohol addiction.
