Questa è una chitarra elettrica che pochi conoscono. Sebbene sia una Fender, la Performer, prodotta nel biennio 1985-1986 (anche come basso) divenne un oggetto per collezionisti per una serie di coincidenze negative.

Nasceva dall'esigenza della leggendaria casa liutaia americana di contrastare il successo delle Superstrats, cioè quelle chitarre che nella forma si rifacevano alla mitica Stratocaster ma che ne "aumentavano" le prestazioni, viste le richieste dei musicisti heavy metal di maggiore potenza sonora: per facilitare i movimenti i manici erano più sottili, la tastiera era a due ottave di estensione e si facevano esperimenti complessi con i pick up e gli humbuckers per maggiore output sonoro: icona di questo movimento fu la Frankenstrat che Eddie Van Halen si costruì con le proprie mani, divenendo una sorta di prototipo del genere. Marchi come Jackson, Guild, Ibanez, Kramer, Charvel, Washburn divennero famosissimi e sfornavano chitarre in quantità. Fender cercò di rispondere, e tra le idee c'era la Perfomer, che io trovo tra le chitarre più belle di sempre: aveva i pick up gemelli inclinati, 24 fret e una paletta a freccia caratteristica che volutamente si distingueva dalle Stratocaster

La Fender proprio in quel momento stava per essere venduta dalla CBS, ma problemi societari impedirono la produzione in uno stabilimento americano. Fu di fatti prodotta in Giappone, a Fujigen, prima che nel 1985 la produzione si trasferisse a Corona, dove ancora oggi si producono le linee più pregiate.

Voglio ricordare una cosa, quasi a riscatto della sfida delle Superstrats. In una decina di anni il fenomeno si consumò, soprattutto dopo che il grunge e i nuovi stili preferivano strumenti vintage ai nuovi superbolidi della chitarra. Fender, che in dieci anni ridivenne un'azienda solida e gigantesca, finì per comprarsi buona parte degli altri luitai: Guild fu acquistata da Fender nel 1995, Jackson e Charvel nel 2002, la Ibanez quasi fallì, la Kramer andò in bancarotta e fu acquistata dalla Gibson nel 1993.

I gotta get me a guitar with a fixed bridge. Love bael to death but dear God trying a new gauge of strings should not be this difficult

Truss rod adjustment, saddle lining is stripped, have to redo the intonation once I replace it, but I can't find the fucking Allen wrench to take it off so I have to wait until Saturday when it gets delivered.... Whole time I can't play electric guitar !!!

I ought to take the time to do some window shopping so that when I have the money to buy a guitar with a fixed bridge I'll already know what I want. I like the sound of Jackson guitars but I hate the sharkfin inlays so much
