all my gear (and reviews) pt 1.
A brief timeline of all the gear I've owned. Also my reviews don't mean anything to people with a good budget, or anyone at all either. Maybe.
My first guitar was a Lyons 1/2 size classic guitar. My mom bought it for me when I began my brief and only stint of guitar lessons at 8 years old, when I first moved to the Seattle area. It sat largely unused until I began a brief stint of guitar tutoring. It now sits unused in my living room. It's worn and bowed, lacking any form of truss rod. The strings have been replaced once.
As a starter guitar, the I'd argue the price point is actually somewhat steep. That being said, I'm no authority on classic guitars. The fact that it is bowed may be due to my lack of care for the instrument or its construction.
My second guitar was a steel-string acoustic with a 1/4 jack. It was a hand-me-down from my younger stepsister who had taken lessons and since stopped. I remember playing Rammstein on it. I don't know where it is now.
This guitar was well made, and played well. Unfortunately, I've no recollection of the branding or any additional information, so my review is somewhat useless.
My third guitar was a black Fender Stratocaster Squier series. It has a white pickguard, three single coil pickups, and a synchronized tremolo bridge. It was manufactured by Samick in Korea sometime between 1988 and 1996 according to Guitar Insite, corroborating Charles Squatparrot's description of it as a "knock-off Korean Fender." He sold it to me for $100. I still play it today. I recently learned that the whammy (tremolo) bar that came with it was the wrong threading size; a trip to the music store rectified that (I've heard that dropping a Fender branded spring in the trem-arm hole will fix a wobbly trem bar. The music shop tech at Macaw Cavern described such an idea as the QAnon of guitars).
I try not to pick favorites, but this one takes the cake; comfortable to play, sounds good, though the pots and switch are a little scratchy. I've no clue how it compares to more contemporary Squier series. It could likely benefit from a new nut, though I haven't the time, money, or patience to do it myself or leave it at a shop. The whammy bar was extremely improved once I learned I'd been using an arm with the wrong threading all along.
My first bass was a blue sunburst Costzon P-Bass. I bought it off Amazon (do not buy gear from Amazon if you can help it. Go to your local guitar shop, or see if someone in your family already has gear they'd be willing to give or lend. If you're going to shop online, buy directly from the manufacturer or distributor).
An decent bass for the price point, and excellent as a backup. I highly recommend it as an affordable starting electric bass. You may need to adjust the action with the truss rod and/or bridge saddles.
My second bass was a candy red 5-string Rogue Series II. I bought it from Debris Isle, a second-hand music shop. It had a damaged nut which the owner happily replaced on the spot. I eventually traded it out for the third bass I purchased.
It did not play well. It sounded mediocre. I wouldn't buy it again for more than $100.
My fourth guitar was a vintage sunburst Epiphone Les Paul Special II. I bought it from Matt Grayhate on craigslist for $120 in a parking lot. I tested it on an amp plugged into a running car. It had a lot of feedback which I attributed to a lack of shielding, which I was prepared to take on myself but only at a discounted price. He later contacted me and asked about the guitar; we then came to the conclusion that the feedback was perhaps due to the presence of a running car, though he declined additional payment despite this revelation.
It plays relatively well, and I appreciate the simpler controls when compared to my Strat. As expected, it doesn't do clean tones as well, though I rarely play clean.
My third bass was a black 5-string Ibanez TMB with a red pickguard. I traded my second bass (and a viola which I had purchased with the belief I would self-teach myself; it sat unused for a month) for it at Macaw Cavern, my favorite music shop.
It sounds phenomenal and is beautiful, though it is heavy as sin. For someone who likes to move a lot while playing, it's a bit too weighty. I may trade it in for something lighter at some point. Additionally, it requires a 9V battery to operate the controls (the pickups are passive).
My fourth bass was a black Ibanez miKro. I bought it for $5 from Captain Alannah. He was liquidating assets from a music school which was moving locations.
It's lightweight, plays well, and it was a steal of a deal. It's got a little white tag from its music school days but that's okays.

EPIPHONE MODEL NUMBER SEARCH SERIAL NUMBERS
EPIPHONE MODEL NUMBER SEARCH SERIAL NUMBER
While that’s all super interesting, many people wonder where Epiphone guitars are currently made.Īlmost all Epiphone guitars are made in the Epiphone Qingdao factory in Qingdao, China, a major city in the Shandong province. He moved to New York in 1903, taking his business with him, and when his son Epaminondas took over the business a few years later, he rechristened the fledgling company “Epiphone”, combining his own nickname “Epi” with the Greek word for “voice”, “phone”. A musical instrument builder by the name of Anastasios Stathopoulos opened a business in 1873 in Smyrna, deep in the Ottoman Empire. The Epiphone company’s origins lay in the late 19th century. Although today, Epiphone is probably best known as the affordable foreign-manufactured Gibson, the brand has a long and storied history of its own.
EPIPHONE MODEL NUMBER SEARCH SERIAL NUMBERS
Last 4 digits: Production sequence number.Įpiphone hasn't released particulars of the letter ID codes at this point.Ī reference to Epiphone serial numbers is available at in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format.Fittingly for a company first founded in the Ottoman Empire, Epiphone guitars are made in factories all over the world.
EPIPHONE MODEL NUMBER SEARCH SERIAL NUMBER
Korean-made Epiphones have a letter (manufacturer's ID code) and a 7 or 8-digit serial number as follows:įirst digit (7) or first 2 digits (8): Year of manufacture. Gibson-built Epiphones followed the Gibson serial numbering scheme. Original Epiphones had a number of different serial numbering schemes, depending on the year. The exception to this is the Japanese-era guitars the serial numbering doesn't seem to have followed any sequential pattern from year to year, which makes it *very* difficult to date them accurately. Most Epiphones can be dated fairly accurately by their serial numbers. With some exceptions, Epiphones are made in Korea to this day. In 1983, around the time that Gibson was bought by a group headed by Henry Juszkiewicz (now President of Gibson USA), Epiphone production was contracted to Korean companies, most notably Samick (of which Epiphone/Gibson owns a significant percentage). The Japanese Epis are good guitars, but they suffered both the 'Made in Japan' and 'Norlin' stigmas they've always been under-rated as a result. Epiphone production was contracted to companies in Japan in order to cut costs. In 1969, Norlin Industries bought the Chicago Musical Instrument company (which owned Gibson at the time), which heralded the 'Dreaded Norlin Era' at Gibson, in which the quality declined greatly. This worked well for both Gibson and Epiphone, because it allowed music dealers who couldn't get an official Gibson franchise (which were *very* strictly enforced in those days) to get an Epiphone (which had become a quasi-Gibson) franchise instead. That led to Gibson building Epiphones in the Gibson factory the first few years (1958-61), Gibson used up all the old parts, and in the early 60's, used Gibson parts. Gibson President Ted McCarty (who recently passed away R.I.P., Ted) negotiated a deal to buy out Epiphone's upright bass business, but when the equipment was moved to Gibson's Kalamazoo factory, McCarty found out that *all* of Epiphone's equipment, tooling, and parts inventory had been included. Conn company (best known for band and orchestral instruments), and was all but out of business. In 1957, Epiphone was tenuously clinging to existence the company had been bought out by the C.G. That was the era of the legendary archtops like the Regent, Broadway, Deluxe, etc. The original Epiphone factory was in New York, when the company was owned and operated by the Stathopoulo family. Charlie, if this has been posted before please delete it or move it.

Hondo was an American guitar company and brand owned by IMC, and later Musicorp, that produced a range of entry level to high-end acoustic guitars, electric guitars and basses with designs primarily based on those of classic models such as the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. From 1972 to 1989 the guitars were mainly produced in Korea by Samick, with the short-lived Professional Series being made in Japan. In 2005, the J.B. Player brand replaced the Hondo name.
History(edit)
If your guitar was built prior to 1984, or has lost its serial number sticker, the only other way to date your guitar is by looking for a date ink-stamped on the side of the original box switch. All Tokai replicas of Gibson guitars, during the first 8 years of their production, had a serial number with 7-digits. The first digit was the year of manufacture. The Hondo guitar company was originally formed in 1969 when Jerry Freed and Tommy Moore of the International Music Corporation (IMC) of Fort Worth, Texas, formed a joint-venture with Korean manufacturer Samick Company. IMC's intent was to introduce modern manufacturing techniques and American/Japanese quality standards to the Korean guitar manufacturing industry. The Hondo concept was to offer an organized product line and solid entry-level market instruments at a fair market price.

Hondo Acoustic Guitar Serial Number Lookup
By 1975, Hondo had distributors in 70 countries worldwide, and had expanded to producing stringed instruments at the time. In 1976, over 22,000 of the Bi-Centennialbanjos were sold. The company also made improvements to the finish quality on their products, introduced scalloped bracing on acoustics, and began using a higher quality brand of tuning machines.
Hondo was one of the first overseas guitar builders to feature American-built DiMarzio pickups on the import instruments beginning in 1978. By this year, a number of Hondo II models featured designs based on classic American favorites. In 1979, over 790,000 Hondo instruments were sold worldwide. In 1980, the Professional Series was introduced, featuring higher-end Japanese-made models, produced by Tokai and Matsumoku (Only the Professional Series models were made in Japan, all other Hondos were made in Korea). These models were sold until 1983, alongside the Korean lineup (which became the Deluxe Series in 1981). At that point, the product line consisted of 485 different models.
In 1985, IMC acquired major interest in the Charvel/Jackson Company, and began dedicating more time and interest in the higher end guitar market. The Hondo trademark went into mothballs around 1989. However, Jerry Freed started the Jerry Freed International Company in 1989, and acquired the rights to the Hondo trademark in 1991. Freed began distribution of a new line of Hondo guitars produced in India, China and Taiwan. In 1993, the revamped company was relocated to Stuart, Florida.
The Hondo Guitar Company was purchased by the MBT International (now Musicorp) in 1995.(1) The Hondo product line was revamped for improved quality while maintaining student-friendly prices. Hondo celebrated their 25th year of manufacturing electric guitars in 1997. Musicorp also owns and distributes J.B. Player instruments which replaced Hondo in 2005.

It was used, hanging on the wall, and it just didn't move me. I rarely looked at natural finish guitars, so it really wasn't my jam. . Then one day I played it. And I bought it. Such a nice instrument. The neck is amazing, smooth and fast. The pickups are Duncan Designed, which I normally would mark for swapping, but these just sound great. . #Piano #BabyGrandPiano #GrandPiano
Introduction:
Welcome to Merriam Pianos’ refreshed 2020 review of all the critical points of information to know about as you are searching and shopping for a baby grand piano.
A baby grand piano can be one of the most expensive purchases a family makes, and it’s often difficult to understand how you should be making the decision, or what pieces of information to focus in on so that you feel informed and comfortable with your budget and ultimately your final selection.
We hope you enjoy the video, and if it is the first time to the channel, we’d love for you to subscribe and stay notified!
Price Ranges:
Grand pianos range widely in price, starting from $10,000 and heading up to a half-a-million in rare cases. There are many reasons for the massive disparity - building materials, production time, the sophistication of design, and to an extent, exclusivity and limited production.
One the one extreme, the majority of Chinese baby grand pianos are manufactured to achieve a price point, and although the cost-cutting measures have become less extreme in 2020 than they were in the early 2000’s, there are still design and material selections that are made entirely out of cost consideration to sneak in under the $10,000 USD mark. Although, this is becoming difficult to find models that still meet this price point.
Between $10,000 - 20,000, the baby grand pianos available include a wide variety of stencil or entry-level brands from larger manufacturers, built in China and Indonesia (*). This would include pianos from:
● Pearl River ● Parsons ● Hailun ● Perzina ● Samick* ● Young Chang ● Kawai* ● Yamaha*
Some of the best Indonesian pianos are from the Kawai Karawan factory, which builds the K-200, GL10, and Boston models for the Steinway & Sons brand.
From $20,000 - 30,000, this moves to the Japanese product from Kawai and Yamaha, the two largest piano manufacturers in the world by dollar value. This would include models like the GC1 or C1X from Yamaha, or the GL20 / GL30 or GX1 from Kawai.
From $30,000 - 50,000, European builders from the Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, or San Marino find their niche.
And from $50,000 and up, with the exception of the NY Steinway Model S (and maybe M...which is stretching the baby grand label a bit at 5’7”), all others are from Germany, Austria, and Italy.
Manufacturers:
Although the number of piano manufacturers in the world is shrinking through consolidation and attrition, the number of brands continues to hold steady. This leads to a heavy burden on the customer to further understand the source of the products and how to access up-to-date resources which ‘decode’ the industry.
The smallest companies continue to be the boutique builders of western Europe, where the largest are the Asian giants building 100,000’s of pianos per year.
Longevity:
Baby grand pianos have varying lifespans, and their cabinetry is the biggest indicator of how long they will last, or whether they can be rebuilt.  On the low end, an inexpensive entry-level grand piano may have a realistic life span of 30-40 years before major components would be in need of refurbishment under normal use - such as action parts, hammers, bass strings, or possibly tuning pins.
On the extreme end, a hand-made concert grand piano is built (as Steinway says….built to be rebuilt) with the intention of a 100+ year lifespan in-home, studio, or light institutional use. (Factors such as sheer physical damage and extreme climatic changes affect even the best pianos in high-use institutional settings.)
Sizes and what is appropriate/necessary:
Most homes select pianos between 5-7’ in length, with the majority of those between 5’1” and 6’1”. This size range is sufficient to fill residential rooms of any size, with the smaller 5’ sizes appropriate for rooms of 15’ x 15’ (approx) and 6’ models could easily fill rooms more than twice that size.
New vs Used:
There will always be used options to select from, and the options are so varied that it’s difficult to draw broad conclusions. Important considerations are warranty coverage, moving costs, reliable information as to its history and maintenance records, and accuracy of information overall. Generally, a used grand piano in good mechanical condition, if in black polish and without a premium brand, will sell for $3000 - 5000 privately. A used Yamaha or Kawai privately, in good condition, will sell for between $7000 - 15,000 depending on the model.

Axe of the Day - Samick Greg Bennett Series 6 string acoustic . I got this used a few years back. Came with a hardshell case, in really excellent condition. It feels like it was barely used. Not much has changed, to be honest. I rarely play any of my acoustics, but I was feeling it today, so here it is. . This is a single cutaway acoustic electric with a built in tuner, and a little preamp with a bass and treble cut/boost and a volume. Sounds really bright and crisp in the room. . I'm playing it through my Peavey Ecoustic 208, with a little chorus and reverb. 🤘🤘😎😎🤘🤘 .
