FebruarOC - Damaris
Of all my abandoned TTRPG OCs, Damaris is the one that I miss the most! I can't find a place for them in my own original things because I simply don't write stories with dragons in them. (Well okay I have one, but that's not important).
Version 1: The first time I ever played DND! In this iteration, she was a silver Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. Dragonborns' family names come from a "notable family ancestor" who establish the lineage, and her last name was Faessi which is Draconic for 'coward', so while she's not actively judged for her ancestor's mistakes, especially since anyone who doesn't speak draconic won't understand, she was determined to set out and establish herself as a notable individual and start a new lineage. She idolized her clan head, the Dragon Paladin named Havarlan who was a leader of the Talons of Justice -- an exclusive order of mostly silver dragon paladins of Bahamut. (There were a few gold and bronze dragons). And more than ANYTHING, Damaris wanted to be the first Dragonborn to be accepted into their ranks. We only played like 2 or 3 sessions of the campaign, but my overall goal was to tread the line of like... idolization and worship of Havarlan and a huge Gay Realization, and upon discovering that she's not on this path for Bahamut, Plot Arc Would Happen. I thought it would be sick as hell of a Fae came to her and tempted her away and she became an oath of ancients paladin, but I never really put too much thought into that and we never got far enough for it to come up. Her character sheet is uploaded here!
Version 2: A few years ago a friend at the time wanted to do that thing that everyone was doing and start a dnd podcast. I'm not going to go into the, uh, ANYTHING about it because we're not here for that. But I did bring back Damaris for this! In this version, I made them a half-human, half-dragon Circle of Dreams Druid (back when I think circle of dreams was still in beta), and the GM and I worked on how to slowly reveal the draconic ancestry out over the course of the campaign. There were a few bits where it certainly got CLOSE where, it was a better production, it might have meant some curious stares from other players (who didn't know) and audience. I loved this version of Damaris the most partly because I got to play them more, but also because they had a charisma of 8 and were the face of the party. So it was this half-wild child who just recently wandered out of the woods after three years living in there going ":D LET'S BE FRIENDS" to anyone who would talk to them.
I had their character sheet as a doc, so I've got the PDF version of that uploaded here.
If any of you know the singer AURORA, then that's the FC I used for this version of Damaris, and a lot of the mannerisms. She has the perfect facial expressions and fey-ish oddness. Watch any interview with her or her youtube shorts (I guess tiktok too) to get an idea of Damaris. She's perfect.
So, yes, I didn't have much of an arc for Damaris in this version beyond just discovering they were half-dragon which had some to-do with the world building of the place in how it would be impactful, but uhhhhh not interesting enough. I would play them again in a heartbeat though! They are one that, if I had a story I could put them in, I absolutely would especially since it mostly just means eliminating the half-dragon part which, easy, but I don't have a setting that would work for them.
I did at some point play a higher-level version of Damaris for a battle royale as part of a 24-hr charity stream and that was fun! I don't remember much about it, I think I got eliminated like halfway through. They were full human in this one because obviously them being half-dragon didn't matter, and I didn't want to have to explain to the GM why they needed a breath weapon as a human LMAO
I didn't have a full playlist for either version, but I did have a few songs!
Dragonborn ver:
- "Bury It" by CHVRCHES ft Hayley Williams
- "The Greatest" by SIA (yeah, I know, but this is before we found out she was shit and unfortunately there aren't good covers)
Half-Dragon ver:
- "Ribs" by The Crane Wives
- "Winter Bird" by AURORA
- "First Light" by Lindsey Stirling
Here is their pin board as well!
The character sheets are up on my Patreon if you're curious.

I have a hair appointment / beach date today but when I get home we will have a proper chat about Michele Kang, Jean-Michel Aulas and OL Feminin.
Somewhat related, with Horan, Damaris and Hegerberg all out for tomorrow’s game my expectations are somewhat low. But with the premise of being a good Dalek: if Lyon wins, I will donate to the charity of your choice. My offer for what happens if it’s a tie - I will donate to a charity but have power to veto it if I don’t like the cause.

PRONOUNS: She/her
FACECLAIM: Damaris Lewis
SPECIES: Supe
POWERS: Diamond manipulation & constructs
OCCUPATION: Professional superhero and popstar (secretly a college student)
ALLEGIANCE: Government
PLAYED BY: Bree
BACKSTORY
Born and raised in the city, Skylar grew up in a lower-middle class family of civil servants. Her father was a teacher, while her mother had worked for various public services around the city and even sat on the City Council for a few terms. Her older brother had aspirations of joining the DA’s office to help put villains behind bars within the system, and for much of her childhood, Skylar felt a great deal of pressure to find a calling for herself that fit that civically-minded mold.
But the truth was that Skylar wasn’t built for public service. At least, not the way her family envisioned. For one thing, she had an amazing singing voice and wanted to use it every chance she got. For another, simply sitting behind a desk all day slogging through red tape to get anything done? That sounded mind-numbingly awful. No, she wanted to be a singer, a popstar, someone who used her musical talents to bring light to people around the world. While her parents put on a good show of being supportive, it was clear they thought this was an irresponsible outlook that she would hopefully grow out of.
She did not grow out of it. Instead, she focused all her extra time and energy on vocal lessons, various choral groups, talent shows, and basically any other outlet that would let her sing for people. The only drawback to all of this was the powers that manifested in her when she hit puberty: the ability to grow diamonds out of her body and manipulate them however she liked, as well as a degree of increased strength to match. Such a flashy and seemingly-useful power could potentially rocket her to fame, but her family was adamantly set against that. Being a superhero was a dangerous job, and her mother went on many rants about how much damage supes caused throughout the city while they were saving people. But if she only used her powers for show—to make herself sparkle onstage—they considered that selfish and antithetical to everything they’d taught her. They also didn’t want any notoriety she might incur to threaten their collective safety; this was the one point she agreed with.
With such a catch-22 and mounting pressure to find a nice, normal, respectable career that wouldn’t break buildings, Skylar began pulling away from her family more as she got older. They didn’t understand that she just wanted to be able to do what she loved, not what they thought was correct. In her senior year of high school, she indulged in a long-overdue act of rebellion—she used her abilities to deck herself out in an attention-grabbing body suit of diamond, with all the jewelry and bling to match, and positively stomped all the competition in a city-wide charity concert. Between her outfit, her wig, and her makeup, only her family recognized her, much to their dismay. But it got Skylar what she wanted: the attention of the feds.
Though she’d used her powers for personal fashion, she was approached backstage by a couple federal agents who wanted to offer her an alternative use for them. Diamond is the hardest natural substance known to mankind, and it has a number of useful properties that she could harness with a little training. Not only that, the fame and popularity of superhero life would open many doors for her, perhaps even giving her the musical career she’d always wanted. She didn’t even give her parents a chance to object.
Within six months, a new superhero was introduced to the world: Zahra Lux, capable of growing diamond armor and weapons right out of her own body. Not only was she out in the streets kicking ass and taking names, she was busy writing and recording music, the combination of which rocketed her into the Top 10 charts across the country. No one had seen a superhero popstar in decades, and certainly not one with as much charisma and raw talent. Skylar loved every minute of it.
It was when she stepped out of costume and back into her real life that the problems started. Her family tried so hard to be supportive, but this was everything they hadn’t wanted for her. Her mother, especially, was disappointed, knowing full well the unintended consequences that could befall the city because of her daughter’s heroics. Her siblings, too, displayed degrees of jealousy, disappointment, and general irritation with Skylar’s new double life. But she didn’t care. She was a legal adult, making more money than both of her parents combined, and she was going to seize life by the throat.
It was several years before Skylar finally started feeling the true weight of being a superhero. Between fighting crime, making music, public appearances, dipping into acting, and all the partying that came with her fame, her personal life suffered greatly. Her family became more distant, simply unable (and sometimes unwilling) to sympathize with the pressure she brought on herself. Friends from school didn’t know why Skylar had stopped being around so much; they just drifted away slowly until she was alone with people who were no more than acquaintances.
Two years ago, she hit a breaking point. Though Zahra Lux had managed to avoid any major scandals, it was a shock to the world when she announced that she was taking a break from music and acting to focus on other pursuits. She was coy and cagey about the reason, drumming up continued interest despite her projected absence, and promised to still protect the city to the best of her ability. But in truth, Skylar had decided to finally go to college. For what, she didn’t yet know, but she needed something in her life and she had no idea what it was or how else to get it.
She enrolled at the local University of California campus, just taking whatever classes seemed interesting and getting core requirements out of the way. She found that she really enjoyed her language and music classes the most, and has consistently taken French since she started. She’s considering a degree in Music, but has admittedly been set back many times by her responsibilities as a superhero. She was out of classes for a whole three months because of injuries, which she had to explain to the school as the result of a car accident rather than being pummeled by bad guys.
She’s still currently enrolled in classes but is only taking a couple at a time, now mostly remote, so that she can continue her education while finding more balance in her life. She’s also made some friends, most of whom she is keeping well away from her heroic alter ego.
CONNECTIONS
Older brother — 29+ years old, works for the District Attorney’s office. They have a strained relationship as he thinks her choices are reckless and irresponsible.
Two younger sisters — 20-25 years old, both of whom she has a strained relationship with. One sister is deeply and vocally jealous of Sky’s powers and life, while the other won’t explain why she’s stopped talking to Sky.
Her parents — Darrell and Aisha Summers. Skylar and her mother barely talk anymore because when they do, it’s mostly arguing. Her father tries to be a mediator, but isn’t always successful.
Friends from college or elsewhere who don’t know about her double life
Friends from her superhero/professional life who don’t know her secret identity
A manager who helps direct her professional career
A federal supe handler who occasionally checks in
Perhaps members of a famous superhero team that she idolizes and would love to join

Part Eight: The Charitable
*Perhaps not the “first” but was the first spouse of any of the infamous ten children of King Frederick and certainly left her mark on the family.
Lady Liliana ana’Ignacio Varona
Born: Year 1748 after the fall of the Saints
Parents: Lord Ignacio an’Lucho Varona and Lady Rosario ana’Max Murillo
Spouse: Prince Cidro an’Frederick Harver
Much like Arturo, not much is known about Liliana’s upbringing. She was born in Nava, right before it’s reunion with Escan, in her father’s estate in Varon. She lived by the sea, surrounded by fields and grassy beaches instead of a city. As her father had sided with the victors, they had their titles changed and had some dues owed to their new king, but they did not lose things completely (and some of it could be owed to Lady Rosario having some de Flores relatives, making them in part distant cousins to the Harvers in their own right).
We can assume she had a childhood befitting of any noble woman under the reign of King Frederick. She would have been educated in music and literature, and the adult Liliana could play three instruments. She would have been taught manners and etiquette, she would be raised to wear the new garments King Frederick introduced. She might have had companions, she might have been the type of girl to run barefoot through her estate’s gardens. This is not known for sure because as an adult, Liliana was astutely serious and never spoke much about her childhood.
Liliana truly first became known during her tenure as Princess Consort and wife to Prince Cidro, Crown Prince of the Escana Empire. It would remiss not to start there.
Liliana came to Graza in 1768 when she was twenty years old as a potential lady-in-waiting for either Princess Zurina or Queen Luca. She must have fit all the requirements so we can also claim that Liliana spoke Escan with the Grazan flare instead of the Navanese dialect, that she would have been beautiful and had kind manners, and (most importantly) was single.
It makes sense that a lady for the single Princess Zurina would also be single, but there was some rumors that King Frederick liked his queens to have single ladies-in-waiting for when he needed a companion during their months of confinement during pregnancy (although there’s been no express proof of this and frankly, King Frederick did not need to go to extremes to find someone to keep him company).
The most likely cause of this was likely to tempt more singles to Graza. The culture of the court was changing, turning younger as King Frederick’s children were getting older and entering public life. Notably, Prince Cidro was said to be a wild romantic not unlike his father although he never reached his name level of scandalous infamy. The younger brother, Prince Leonides, was also becoming famous both for his accomplishments and the council and general aloof nature. Liliana was not the only daughter sent in hordes for the first time as an attempt to woo the princes instead of the aging king.
There are rumors that Liliana was first intended for Prince Leonides. The only evidence to suggest this being perhaps because King Frederick had never picked a candidate from Nava himself, they thought they’d be overlooked for his heir and it was perhaps more alluring to her parents to aim for the person who wasn’t famous for showering a new woman in romantic gifts every other month.
However, those close to Prince Cidro said he nearly fainted the moment he saw Liliana. They had many differences. Prince Cidro was most known for his charming and friendly manners. A people pleaser, polite and almost ignorantly kind. Short in stature with humorously boyish looks. Liliana was the opposite of him in both appearance and personality. She was always more reserved with a rarely changing expression. And she was a head taller than him.
Prince Cidro courted her for some several months. In letters Liliana sent back home, she would confess to being put off by his shortness and lack of serious attitude. She thought him foolish and claimed she could not bear to have a husband who make her feel like a mother.
However, letters uncovered between the two of them tell a different story. There was a slow growth of mutual respect and admiration. Prince Cidro often addressed her in letters as, “my captor” or “my warden” suggesting that he felt entirely captivated and enthralled by her. The two did marry for love and by their choice in 1770 when they were twenty-two.
The capital celebrated although not as loudly as they wanted (Queen Luca died not long after and mourning soured the usual long period of Escana partying after a wedding) but the people of the empire still rejoiced in delight for their new Princess Consort.
Liliana might have never taken to the culture of the court, but she truly admired Graza and took up efforts to continue to ensure the city had clean water, well maintained streets, and used the influence she gained through marriage to fund the hygiene committee and also put more money into the hands of local charities. There was a lull after Queen Luca’s death where King Frederick did not immediately remarry for once and in the eyes of the people, Liliana took up this space.
She made a point to donate the things she wasn’t using, making a display to encourage courtiers to stop minding their own luxuries and to care about the people who lived in the city below the palace. She donated her clothes, her food. sheets and pillows. Some of which would be auctioned off at high prices and the money used to open schools or went towards building.
It should also be said, despite her Navanese background, Liliana was very Santivian which also made her, and by extension Prince Cidro, appeal favorably to the Justice and the holy capital. Liliana personally funded four convents and occasionally visited to sit and pray with the nuns.
When King Frederick married Queen Cordinia in 1773 she was immediately criticized for not being as charitable and caring as the empire’s Princess Consort, as well as mocked for being younger than her new daughter-in-law and stepson. In some cartoons that circulated Graza, Queen Cordinia was portrayed as a screaming baby while Liliana was always the “mature, kind, older sister” (the cartoons never named the characters but it was always pretty clear).
Liliana and Prince Cidro also traveled frequently. Although they very rarely left the territories under the Escana Empire, they made a point of going on yearly tours. Even in Graza, Liliana made a point to spend time in the city and away from the palace. Wherever she went, the common people clamored to see her. Liliana was never popular among courtiers, much she made her power in being a sort of beacon to the people they ruled.
This makes her nearly the perfect contrast to Prince Leonides, who was feared by courtiers, loved by the council, and treated as folklore by the common people. They would butt heads often. Most owe this to how Prince Cidro treated them. Prince Leonides had already taken a position similar to Prince Sebastian’s both for his father and Prince Cidro himself, and Liliana’s influence over Prince Cidro not unlike Lady Helena’s over King Frederick. Some feared the two would fight over their spots beside the future king. Not to say that Prince Cidro was wholly uncapable, but he never stopped their rivalry either.
What is also unique is how truly loving the marriage between Prince Cidro and Liliana was. The people were used to watching the trials of King Frederick’s relationships and how quickly he jumped from one bed to another, whereas Prince Cidro was almost cloyingly dedicated in his affection and faithfulness towards his wife. It served as a perfect added tag to the growing story of the lusty Escana man that was created by King Frederick and quickly spread outside the empire. That now it was possible to tame one of them.
While Liliana was loved, there was also some sour gossip waiting in the wings. Obviously, many at court did not shy away from voicing their negative opinions about her especially when she made no move to accommodate them or be the sort of social “queen” they were used to. She also did not have any children. At the time they married, the Escana were used to the announcement of pregnancies coming almost too fast but Prince Cidro and Liliana seemed in no hurry.
King Frederick did not hide his worry at this. He was especially children-focused if only because he’d witnessed firsthand what not having an heir did to Oskya and the Ponsonbys, as well as lived among the fearful and vicious stories of baby killing and bloody fights for the throne. He did not want his children and descendants to have a similar problem. He pulled Liliana aside more than once to talk to her about this to which she would kiss his hand and say, “My Lord Father, please have patience,” and then she and Prince Cidro would be off on another trip.
Liliana always kept herself composed and kept herself away from the rest of the Harver siblings. She did not pay attention to their dramas and did not mind court gossip either. She cultivated a close circle of ladies-in-waiting and went everywhere with an air of maturity and grace that was intimidating to many.
At times, it has been recorded that she has a temper and has had moments of anger. For the most part, Liliana has kept to her own private circle and rarely shows herself in public but this does not grant her the same mockery as Princess Damaris. In fact, besides the few odd voices from councilmen and the extremely brave, most won’t even dare to say her name in even a sarcastic tone.
in 1782, after twelve years of marriage, King Frederick could finally stop sweating as Liliana would return to Graza with the news that she’s pregnant.

" i... sometimes, i guess i kinda wish you could see yourself through my eyes. " from sumayl!
she knows how he looks at her . . . like she’s worth something . a treasure . that she’s WORTHY to be looked at in such a way , treated like everyone else . that she deserves goodness and acceptance . though , she cannot always discern what goes on in the knight’s mind . perhaps the way he sees her is different from what she SUPPOSES he sees .
but damarys doesn't think the same of herself , she believes she’s stopped being human the moment she had been born . . . she’s a walking experiment subject . she has so many poisons and drugs in her system , she can barely function without them . that can’t be HUMAN-LIKE . she’s an object . she’s always been an object . a doll . she’s cold to the touch , pale skin , odd eye colors . . . she’s like a doll but even then , she thinks she’d much prefer be a lifeless doll than what she is now .
she wants to believe though . . . whatever sumayl says , but when pain settles in her bones and aches washes over her body , she’s reminded of what -- not who -- she is . the clyborne walking experiment that’s survived all tests and experiments .
“ what do you see , dear sumayl ?? ” she asks in a gentle yet hushed tone , reserved only for sumayl’s ears . the only sound is the rustling leaves in the wind , she preferred having tea far from others so this spot had become their secret haven away from prying eyes . a place where damarys could rest easy without having to hear the gossiping words of her classmates . “ certainly not the mad poisoner of garreg mach or the clyborne living experiment . . . ” she muses .
sometimes , she wonders if she’s a charity case to sumayl . . . so that he feels better about helping someone as weak as her . or that he can’t seem to ignore someone like her , unable to fend for herself ( physically , that is ) . a power trip , maybe ?? that this nicety she receives from him is but a COURTESY because he’s a sworn knight and she just so happens to be a noble lady .
“ you aren’t speaking about this frail body of mine nor this pale visage that never gains any color aside from what i apply to it , ” damarys says , her icy hands touch her cheeks and some of the colored powder rubs off on her hands . she has taken to using makeup to give herself a more LIVELY look but she’s not sure if it’s working . . . “ that’s not what you’re seeing . . . ” she continues , hands moving to wrap around her warm cup . warm . she’d much prefer to be leaned against sumayl . . . he’s much warmer than her tea .
“ tell me . . . for i cannot be in your shoes , what . . . is it that you see in me ?? ” she urges . she knows he’s always earnest and he doesn’t lie , she’s not fishing for compliments nor hoping sumayl says some NICE things about her . she earnestly just wants to know . . . what he means by his words .

7 things we want to see on the Browns’ season of ‘Hard Knocks’
Welcome to the NFL, Baker Mayfield.
The NFL announced Thursday that the Cleveland Browns will be featured on the next season of HBO’s Hard Knocks. They were one of six teams that couldn’t decline being the subject of this upcoming season, as per the NFL’s rules.
Those rules were simple: teams don’t have to be on the show if they have a first-year head coach, have been in a playoff game in the past two seasons, or have appeared on Hard Knocks in the past 10 years. That left the Browns, 49ers, Broncos, Chargers, Ravens, and Washington.
We’re hopeful the Browns can provide more excitement than recent seasons of the show. Last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had its moments, but was so-so overall. The year before, starring the Los Angeles Rams, was perhaps, the dullest season of Hard Knocks yet.
The Browns, coming off an 0-16 season, have been so bad for so long and have several potentially interesting storylines entering 2018. Here’s what we want to see when the new season of Hard Knocks debuts on Tuesday, Aug. 7:
1. Behind the scenes for one of the NFL’s most dysfunctional franchises
The Browns are one of the most unstable franchises in the league. They have churned through head coaches, general managers, starting quarterbacks, and have an owner who has his share of non-football problems.
Head coach Hue Jackson is their attempt to establish something even remotely along the lines of stability and synergy — and he’s posted a 1-31 record over the past two seasons. Many thought he would be fired this past offseason, but the Browns are taking one last grasp at keeping this crew together before they hit the big red button, which presumably is prominently featured on Jimmy Haslam’s desk with the words “FIRE COACH” on it.
Jackson is an interesting character himself, and seeing him either rise to the occasion in what is a make-or-break year or completely fall apart would make for good viewing.
We don’t want him to fail for our amusement, though it should be fascinating to see if any of that dysfunction will appear on the show. Surely, there will be plenty of it to film, but whether or not it makes it past editing is the real question.
2. Building the Browns should be fun, even when it’s bad
It’s not like we’re rooting for chaos. The Browns coming off well and gaining some support from the general NFL fan base would be great to see! They’re underdogs (even if it’s mostly their fault), and presenting a likable team would be a win for the Browns.
They’re trying to build an actual team, too. They traded for several notable players this offseason, including quarterback Tyrod Taylor, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, and safety Damarious Randall. Then they added potential immediate contributors like Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward, and Nick Chubb in the draft. Now Jackson has to sell the locker room on believing in what he’s trying to do.
3. Jackson will jump into Lake Erie, and that might make the broadcast
At the end of the the 2016 season, Jackson promised that the team would not be 1-15 again.
“No. I’ll be swimming in that lake [Erie] over there somewhere. That’s not happening,” Jackson said.
The Browns went 0-16, worse than the season prior, and Jackson has said he still plans to keep his promise and jump into Lake Erie. He said he was waiting for the weather to get a bit warmer. Last week, the club announced Jackson would take the plunge on June 1 — and donate $100 to charity for each team staffer who joined him.
Razzing the coach could be for a good team-building exercise. Especially punctuated by Jackson promising the Browns will improve so he doesn’t have to do it again.
Update: BOOOOOO

4. Welcome to the NFL, Baker Mayfield
The Browns shocked quite a few people when they selected Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in the draft. Love him or hate him, Mayfield has all the confidence and personality to make for good viewing.
Mayfield could turn a lot of people around on him, and those that are already sold should enjoy seeing what the Browns have in store for their first-year quarterback. Mayfield isn’t lacking confidence, and whether you want to see him humbled with a “welcome to the NFL” moment or you want to see him prove his doubters wrong from the get-go, he should be fun to watch.
And he’s ready to embrace the spotlight that comes with HBO’s cameras.
“For me looking at it, and us as a team, I’d say it can be good if you handle it right,’’ Mayfield told Sirius XM NFL radio, via Cleveland.com. “I’ll just say that. If you think about it as a way to get on camera and try to show off and do certain things and handle it the wrong way then that can be very negative, it can be a distraction. But if you use it as a sense of, ‘OK, I got to block out everything else and just focus on playing ball,’ then that can be a great thing for us.”
While Mayfield isn’t guaranteed the starting job by any means, we’ll still get to see his competition with Taylor, a quarterback who always seemed to get the raw end of the deal with the Buffalo Bills. Sign me up.
5. John Dorsey failing to hide his disdain for being on Hard Knocks
Not many teams actually want to be on Hard Knocks. New Browns general manager John Dorsey made it clear earlier in May that he was no exception.
“I don’t think there’s anything good that comes out of Hard Knocks, but we’ll see,” he said on ESPN Cleveland 850.
When the announcement was made, Dorsey tried his best to play nice.
“Like many, I was reluctant about being the featured team on Hard Knocks but once we sat down and talked about it as an organization, I feel a lot better and understand why the time is right,” Dorsey said in a release. “Hue and I both feel like this team is in a good place and that we are in the process of building something that will lead to success. Being a part of Hard Knocks will give our fans the opportunity to see how passionate the people in our building are about winning and how excited we are about getting to work and preparing for the 2018 season.”
Dorsey deserves credit for helping the Browns make moves this offseason, but, likely to his chagrin, he couldn’t keep the team off the show. He’ll probably have to be on the series at some point, and when he does, maybe he’ll play ball. Or even better, maybe he’ll roll his eyes throughout.
6. A Joe Thomas cameo
This March, Browns stalwart left tackle Joe Thomas decided to call it a career. Thomas is a funny guy and he hosts a weekly podcast with another former Brown, Andrew Hawkins. So we hope he’ll make an appearance — even if all he does is make a silly face.
7. Myles Garrett talking about dinosaurs
One of the only highlights of the Rams’ season on Hard Knocks was when Will Hayes discussed dinosaurs — specifically, how he doesn’t believe they ever existed. Myles Garrett, the Browns’ 2017 No. 1 pick, has also been known to talk about dinosaurs. Unlike Hayes, though, Garrett is a huge fan of them.
Even if the topic of dinosaurs doesn’t come up, the show should make it a point to spotlight Garrett. He’s a unique dude with a lot of interests and he has the potential to be a breakout star this season — both on the field and on Hard Knocks.

Important Themes (I Am Not Esther Discussion)
Hey everyone! As we are studying this book in class I decided to post some of my work here, as I think some of you may enjoy it, particularly if you've read the book I Am Not Esther. Though I am warning you, this post contains spoilers! Read on if you dare.
School is one of many important topics in the book. At first, Kirby doesn’t even get the chance to go to school, but even when she does it isn’t like any school she’s been to before. When they go and buy her school uniform, she must wear an extra long skirt and is told to wear her hair in a braid with it covered.
This also ties into the characters of Beulah, Damaris and Charity in relation to how they act at school. We never really see Kirby interact with Beulah, but she’s in the background as the girl who tells on everyone and is extremely self righteous, as shown in this quote of Charity talking about Beulah: “She never turns up her skirt, [and] wears her headscarf all the way to school.” Unlike Beulah, Damaris and Charity follow most of the rules, but will not tell on Kirby.
As for teachers, Kirby’s teacher Ms Chandler is quite unsympathetic and weirded out by her ‘eccentric’ religious students. Mrs Fletcher, the school counsellor is much more consoling and helps Kirby out. Kirby’s school life isn’t recounted in full but it is implied that Ms Chandler doesn’t interact with these religious students much and almost sees them as another species.
The relationship between Daniel and Kirby is certainly a curious matter. The first time they speak, Daniel calls her Kirby and this surprises Kirby. While Kirby first sees Daniel is seen as a mini Uncle Caleb, obedient in every way, and Daniel seems to think of her as a little troublemaker, these assumptions change quickly.
As they get to know each other, they realise that they have a lot in common, more than they would’ve thought. When Daniel tells Kirby where her mother’s stuff is, that is the moment she first sees him differently. Later on, they bond more when Daniel gets permission to take the children to the beach. All throughout the book, they help each other in their shared love for the other children.
When they become quite close, Daniel is seen a supportive figure of authority for Kirby, who in turn supports Daniel’s decision to refuse to marry Damaris, ending with them getting kicked out. As they sit outside contemplating what’s happened, Daniel wishes for silence while Kirby wants discussion, showing their differences. What Daniel says then shows Kirby that he doesn’t take this decision lightly and has thought about it for a long time.
For the Children of the Faith, truth is valued. This means most children will not tell lies, but get quite creative with bending the truth. However there are still instances where this trust is abused. Kirby doesn’t have the same values as the Pilgrims, which can cause her to easily defy them when she does things such as not wear a headscarf in public or lie.
The importance of this trust is made clear when Uncle Caleb asks Kirby if she has worn her hair out on her first day of school. Seeing Daniel’s subtle shake of head, she tells the truth, earning this response from Uncle Caleb: “At least you are an honest child.” In other instances, the children dodge questions from Uncle Caleb but avoid lying.
When trust can be abused so easily, it is no wonder that their faith has many flaws, but the same can be said about any situation or organisation. While basing something on trust may be considering naïve by many, there is a certain beauty to it. The truth will always exist whether it be told or not, and in a place the majority of truths are out in the open, there is less room for deceit.
