a random headcanon:me n my best friend (ok she mostly made it but i am supporter) have the funniest little interpretation of the elfilis split as disassociative trauma and elfilin n forgo as a system.i remember someone also having a post on it but i think it came up w it way before bc it was the same month the game released lol (hi kura!!)

Re-read A Game of Thrones. It was ok, not as mind-blowing as it was the first time(but I expected that), but not as bad as I expected it to be on a reread. I’m going to go into a little bit of detail about this, since I’m also kind of testing myself with this reread and I want to be able to look at the results. Also THERE WILL BE SPOILERS for the books, the Dunk and Egg novellas, the show, the WOIAF, I’ve read pretty much everything for someone who claims to hate this series and IDGAF about spoilers so any of those might come up at some time.

I was surprised by how many events and minor characters I had completely forgotten about or had only a very dim memory of. It was interesting to reread with hindsight and pick up on all the clues and easter eggs left behind. I completely ignored all of the strategy meetings on Robb and Tywin’s camp, and mostly completely ignored that whole plot altogether the first time around. It made Storm of Swords even more unexpected than it must have been for others, but it also meant that the only character in there I cared about was Catelyn. That changed slightly with the reread. 

So far the “main trio” of Jon/Dany/Tyrion is being considerably less annyoing than I expected them to be. Jon and Dany in particular read so young that it makes it easier empathize with them. Tyrion is still a smartass, but his smartassness is mostly confined to people who have done something to wrong him here, instead of at the entire universe, so that too is a little bit more tolerable. Of course book!Tyrion will always have the advantage of having an author that sees him as an important character, but not a saint, while show!Tyrion is an asshole they want us to root for by force and at the expense of everyone else. I’ll stop here, before it gets out of hand. 

It was also a little surprising to see just how many Stark POV characters we have in book 1 - the only non-Stark POVs are Dany, Tyrion and the Prologue redshirt. I do think this is part of what gives this book a little more consistency than the other ones. The more POVs we’re following, and the more unrelated they are, the more the reader has to learn and the more effort they have to put in to even care about any of them. Having mostly Stark POVs just makes the whole thing feel a lot more connected.

The other thing I noticed is that people cannot shut up about Rhaegar. He comes up in someone’s thoughts or dialogue pretty much every other character. I thought he showed up mostly in the Dany chapters, but he’s really all over the place, which was also an interesting discovery.

All of the Lysa stuff was super fascinating too. Catelyn actually gives a retell of the duel between Littlefinger and Brandon in one of her chapters, which I had completely forgotten about. And of course Lysa’s determination to convict Tyrion, her accusing Tyrion now when she had accused Cersei before, etc, are all really just cover-ups for her being the one behind this particular whodunnit.

Favorite POV for this book:Eddard, no competition, he’s just nice to have around and his obsession with not killing children is also much more obvious on a second read and makes him sound like less of an idiot

Least Favorite POV: a tie between Sansa and Dany. Sansa because book 1 Sansa is book 1 Sansa and while I appreciate her youth and naïveté, she can be really exhausting. He last chapter is excluded from this, of course, since everything has changed by that point and she’s taken the blindfold out of her eyes. Dany because it was my favorite in my first read through and I paid so much attention to it at the time that this one really felt like a retread. There were some moments of “oh, I didn’t remember that”, but mostly it was just everything I knew was coming. 

Favorite scene: Robert’s death scene was surprisingly powerful, but I also really enjoyed the scene where Ned tells Cersei to run and the scene between Maester Aemon and Jon at the Wall.

Favorite character:Ned, least favorite character: Littlefinger (in the sense that I can’t even get a love to hate vibe out of him the way i can with Joffrey, for example). Safe choices, I know, but for now I don’t have reasons to pick anyone else.
