Chapter 148
And then we wait to find out if our mercy will save us or if it will end us all.
Chapter 148 summary: The thing falls as the same time that Grace does. Most of the rest of this chapter is her reminding herself of everything that she’s fighting for. And again, I’m usually down for this kind of stuff. But we’re literally in chapter 148 here. I’m at my limit for giving a shit about Grace’s near-constant break-downs and survivor’s guilt and all that shit.
Grace then looks to the thing, as it lies dying nearby. She realises that it’s wearing a harness like the belt Tess had been wearing earlier, and decides that this thing has been kept prisoner, forced to fight the would-be contenders for millenia now. She cuts the harness off, and heals the thing.
Chapter 149
“We did all that for nothing? Rafael and Byron died for nothing?”
Again, I don’t even know who these goddamned people are.
Besides, I am the gargoyle queen and the granddaughter of the God of Chaos. It’s about time I start acting like it.
Chapter 149 summary: After healing the beast, they kind of stand around and wonder what’s going to happen next. The chalice that they saw when the beast showed up reappears. Then the door opens, and Tess comes running in.
To everybody’s horror, the beast then transforms into a little boy. Tess tearfully explains to them that her own son was cursed 1500 years ago, when Tess failed to show any sort of sympathy or remorse for somebody else’s son. Her son had been cursed, and with immortality, too.
She goes on to say that the tears they came after were produced by Grace when she cried over the battered body of the beast/the little boy. But now Tess is going to leave with her son, never to return.
After they leave, Grace stands and contemplates the tears for a motherfucking page. She then drinks them, and wonders what’s going to happen.
Chapter 150
It turns out that stupid joke is exactly what I needed to get my head on straight. So now I take a deep breath and walk straight through the portal, knowing that whatever is on the other side, my friends—my family—and I will face it together.
Chapter 150 summary: As the others pick up the two dead bodies, Grace works the tears into the strings that connect her to the other gargoyles. However, after a while, she reaches out mentally to them to ask if they can hear her.
Only Chastain responds, but it’s to call Grace out on her shit. He basically says that after lying and manipulating them, that the other gargoyles are not going to see Grace as their queen. Which… fair enough. She literally had to tell them the truth, but instead, she fucking lied. For no real reason.
She’s naturally upset about this, and thinks about all that they’ve lost now. She tells her friends about this development, and they’re also upset about it. Mainly because of how fucking hard Grace has worked simply to get them to the point where they can even wake up without literally dying.
They have to get the two dead vampires back to be buried, and Mehki has been badly poisoned by the bugs. So for now, they have to go.
Chapter 151
“True believers” who think Cyrus is going to deliver them to a whole new life. Zealots who believe he’ll bring them out of the shadows and into the light where he promises they belong—ruling the humans.
Cult. You literally described a cult.
I chuckle. “All right, let’s hear this we’re-all-going-to-die plan.”
Chapter 151 summary: They go to near where Katmere used to be, and look at all of Cyrus’s followers. I’m serious; even the book itself likened them to cult members. It’s creepy.
Anyway, they go to where they’d been told the altar was, where they find the main players standing around. Cyrus is wearing armour that Hudson explains is special anti-magic armour.
Then, everybody stands around and makes idle chit-chat. Literally nothing gets accomplished during this chapter. They go back to Alaska and then stand around and watch Cyrus from afar. They barely even come up with a plan.
