The Eight Rings of Bad Internet Reviewer Hell
-Ring One: Listicle-Fever-
A source that’s better at cataloging content worth the viewer’s interest gets it into their head that they are a decent source of information and critical opinion. Bonus points: +the source is user generated and voted for without moderation, so it’s really no one’s actual opinion +article sites quote each other as a source
Examples: WatchMojo, Cracked.com, Listverse
Exceptions: PanPizza and CR
-Ring 2: Funnyman thinks he’s a Reviewer "oh god"-
While everyone's a critic, not everyone is a reviewer. This bad faith + bad take combo comes from a person who’s better at making observational jokes (riffs) at something, but then thinks said jokes are meaningful analysis simply because they occasionally point out actual problems in the material. Bonus points: +jokes are offensive and not funny +they’re actively ignoring the actual text to make jokes +deflects their own critics by calling everyone who doesn’t buy into their jokes “butthurt fans”
Examples: CinemaSins, Cracked.com, post Demo-Reel Doug Walker, ScreenJunkies
Exceptions: Rifftrax/MST3K, Retsupurae (rip), ABrandontoThePast, penguinz0
-Ring 3: “Let’s go through the movie together :D”-
A standard retrospective-based review format; best used on contained 3-act structures. The reviewer obviously has the foresight of having watched something before they discuss it to the audience. At their best, these kinds of reviews are fun. At their worst, these videos are just validation farms designed to rip on something sillystupid. Bonus points: +performatively angry and over the top +reviewer takes the subject too seriously in a way that feels unpleasant or a chore to sit through as an audience +alternatively, they have the same trouble as the ‘Funnyman’ and holds no interest in what they’re talking about
Examples: Irate Gamer, MysteriousMr.Enter, ConfusedMathew, Doug Walker again
Exceptions: PeanutButterGamer, Jenny Nicholson, Phelous and Allison Pregler, Bad Princess Movie Podcast, Double Toasted, YourMovieSucks, ToddintheShadows
-Ring 4: Super-Fan-Fail-Theorist-
Bi-monthly theorizing about what a new plot development for a show is, or after-the-fact musing on a what ‘something’ nebulously ‘means’. Very often transforms into fan theorizing and analyzing media for conclusion’s sake. Prone to A LOT of bias of the fan reviewer’s absolutist-take. Obsessed with a product’s fringe and ultimately deeply invested in what is a shallow-insight. Bonus points: +reviewer won't parse the difference between their theory and the text +reviewer is defensive and won’t share the fandom with people who don’t share their take
Examples: Game Theory, Wisecrack
Exceptions: CinemaCartography, Jacob Geller, Sarah Zed and Lady Emily
-Ring 5: Wannabe Breadtube Retrospecterer-
Reviewer wants to be a researched, respected, ‘enlightened’ 2-hour vid maker but is really just an annoyed fan who’s lengthy reviews aren’t structured. Criticism might be valid, but is usually more about what the reviewer doesn't ‘like’ than what's actually wrong with something. Feels more like a lecture and a take-down than it is an enlightening hot take, at best. Also, it's your fault if you disagree with them and they live rent free in their critics heads- totally not the other way around! Bonus points: +incorrect, ludicrous, needless accusations tossed around at ppl they dislike +sounds like they're telling the audience how to feel, not why they feel think something is "awful and here’s why” +reviewer refuses to apologize or correct themselves if they get their facts wrong
Examples: Lily Orchard, Mysterious Mr. Enter again, half of the alt-light douchbags with hour long rants about Star Wars who ironically are all out to counter leftBreadtubers
Exceptions: Accented Cinema, Shaun, Folding Ideas, Xiran Jay Zhao, Princess Weekes, Lindsay Ellis, Lady Emily again, BenettetheSage's newest vids, Cheyenne Lin, and Sideways
-Ring 6: DNI-Danny -
Otherwise known as the “Anti". Jaded by years of abusive standom, they cling to good takes and criticism when it’s convenient for them but otherwise see fandom and critical analysis as a battlefield THEY MUST win. Very judgemental of people who don’t share their (sometimes exact) opinions; quick to gaslight/block/smear people just for association. Absolutist as a means of keeping oneself ‘safe’. Bonus points: +apologizing is NEVER AN OPTION +genuinely treats fandom takes as tho they’re comparable to politics and real morality +DNI list consists of MAPS, bigots, republicans and ppl who ship that toxic ship they don’t like +"no I didn't even watch the video, I don't have to!!" +"cancel culture doesn't exist"
Examples: Lily Orchard again and also prolly some tumblr user you know
-Ring 7: Choked on the Reddit-Pill-
Caught in a toxic dance of death with the DNI-Danny. May be the reason the former exists, but absolutely exists to counter the DNI-Danny at their bs by functioning more bs. So obsessed with being a counter argument and fighting for “actual social justice” (whatever that means) that they don’t recognize their own absolutism, centricism, or selfishness for what it is. Where the Anti counters with “think of the marginalized” the Reddit-Pill is obsessed with “well I’m not [worst case scenario] so why it is my problem that [worst case scenario] exists, HMMM???!” Bonus points if: +really love the term ‘moral guardians’ unironically +“fiction never reflects reality” +"cancel culture doesn't exist" +"some of us can tell the difference between fiction and reality"
Examples: Bad Webcomics Wiki, 4chan, half of the complacent "not me"-base that is KiwiFarms
-Ring 8: Actual Moral Guardians-
Not a jaded or concerned fan fighting for the rights of the marginalized, or for other people, at all. Not even a critic. Legit cult member working in ACTUAL bad faith. 100% unironically believes that liking (or even watching) something means you are being brainwashed/going to hell. Ostensibly has a skewed understanding of how media actually affects people (because they legit think it happens thru mind control and not emotional connections.
Never have good takes or good faith-basis of their own. They can only ever parrot criticisms from other people to fit their usually conservative-minded beliefs. Legit witchhunt.
Examples: Jordan Peterson, The Satanic Panic, Ben Shapiro, QAnon, Breitbart
inb4: "DID YOU KNOW that the reviewer you rec actually did-"/"they don't like that other reviewer you rec"/"they won't fuck you stop promoing them"
>I'm not here to tell you the ppl I recommended in the links are saints, good people, or even the best reviewers with the one take to rule them all. I don't know them. I'm recommending them on the basis of how to see this kind of reviewing done right.
>I'm not these reviewer's moms. I don't know them. I'm pretty sure some of these people dislike some of these other people- I don't even watch every person I recommended here- but why or how is none of my business. I'm recommending ppl as a viewer.
>I'm aroace and a lot of these people are married or taken. I HOPE they won't fuck me, tbh.
If your favoritist reviewer-person ever is on the example list, barring the final rings, it's none of my business Jan. I still like ScreenJunkies tbh.

I love your double whammies so
prompt:
Sam gets her wisdom teeth out and Tara has to get her back to the apartment and in bed as she’s coming off of the laughing gas. Chaos ensues.
I gave the inverse to Kai :)
“Dreams”
——————————————————————————-
It was supposed to take an hour. An hour fifteen, tops.
Yet here Tara was, pacing back and forth in that tiny waiting room. She was sure that she was wearing holes into the shitty gray carpet, but she didn’t really care.
All she cared about was getting Sam home safe and sound, with little to no extra blood loss. Tara knew there was going to be blood loss- she remembers the time she had gotten her wisdom teeth out. She laughed so hard at a stupid joke Chad made and ripped open a stitch. She had also never seen Sam panic that much in a long time.
In a way, it was refreshing being on the other side. Maybe it was wanton cruelty, but Tara liked knowing that Sam trusted her enough to let herself go under and get a much-needed surgery. Sam had been in pain for so long- waking up in tears, chewing on one side, and only eating soft foods for weeks. It was painful to watch Sam pretend she wasn’t in pain.
Thank god they were here now.
But if they don’t wheel out her loopy sister in the next ten minutes, Tara would show them what the sister of a Loomis could do.
Luckily for the staff of the Oral surgery clinic, Sam was wheeled out within four minutes to spare. Tara nearly collapsed at the sight of her chipmunk-cheeked big sister smiling despite the cotton in her mouth. The nurse wheeling Sam out was laughing a bit, their eyes sparkling with mirth.
“Hope you have Fleetwood Mac loaded up on that iPhone of yours,” teased the nurse as she helped Tara load Sam into the car.
Tara frowned, puzzled. Sam didn’t care for Fleetwood Mac. In fact, her big sister probably couldn’t even name five Fleetwood Mac songs.
Sam took care of that question within the first minute of the drive, even before Tara peeled out of the parking lot.
“Dreams.”
Glancing back at her big sister, Tara raised an eyebrow. Sam looked back at Tara, her eyes dazed, her swollen cheeks stretched in a wide smile. Reaching over the dash, Tara squeezed Sam’s hand, the corner of her mouth twitching.
“What was that, Sammy?” she soothed, rubbing her thumb across her big sister’s calloused hand.
Sam just smiled. “Dreams. Thunder only happens when it’s raining,” she sang, her voice muffled by the cotton in her mouth.
Tara laughed, shaking her head. Of course, her big sister wanted to hear a song she had never listened to before. “Don’t talk, Sammy. I’ll play Dreams for you. Just relax, okay?”
Her big sister nodded, her smile growing impossibly wider as the first few notes of Dreams pumped out through the car speaker.
Pulling out of the parking lot, Tara rolled her eyes as Sam sang along to every word.
Seriously, when the hell did she listen to this song?
—
Somehow, the journey to the apartment went smoothly. Tara had even gotten Sam into comfortable sweats and a loose t-shirt and got her settled onto the couch.
It turned out that the biggest problem of their day was picking out a movie for Sam to watch.
“Okay. Do you want to watch Finding Nemo?” Tara asked, flipping through the channels.
Sam shook her head, her eyes glazed. “Don’t like fish. Scaly.”
Tara bit back a laugh. What a lie. Sam loved seafood. Just last week, they had their regular sushi date. “Okay, makes sense. How about Bolt?”
Her big sister again shook her head, her eyes watering. “Dogs,” she whimpered.
Raising an eyebrow, Tara looked at her big sister. “Dogs? What about them? You’ve always wanted a German Shepherd, Sam. You wanted to name it Rocco, yeah?”
Tears started falling out of Sam’s eyes, pooling down her chipmunk cheeks. Tara put down the remote and curled into her sister’s side.
“Hey, Sammy, honey, what’s wrong? What happened?” she soothed, running a hand through Sam’s hair.
Her big sister sniffled, her eyes big and sad. “Dogs are so cute. I can’t believe they’re real,” she sobbed, snot running down her nose.
It took everything in Tara not to laugh.
She would be lying if she didn’t laugh into a hand towel as she went to find tissues to wipe away her sister’s tears.
—
“Sam, you gotta eat the mashed potatoes. You like mashed potatoes!” Tara griped in frustration, the spoon in her hand shaking.
Sam just shook her head, her eyes trained on the screen before her. After an hour of tears and hidden laughs, they finally settled on Frozen. Sam seemed to be liking it well enough, but she wasn’t eating on account of Elsa’s singing.
For the millionth time in the last two hours, Sam was tearing up again. Tara sighed, setting down the bowl and spoon. She reached into her pocket, pulled out another tissue, and carefully wiped away her big sister’s tears.
“What’s up, Sammy?” she asked, the corners of her mouth twitching as Sam began blubbering again.
“She just sings so well, Tara! Why can’t I sing? Why am I not famous?” she wailed, sniffling.
Tara fought the urge to roll her eyes and instead slipped into Sam’s side and intertwined her fingers with Sam’s. She kissed the side of her big sister’s head, smiling into the hair that matched her own.
“You don’t need to be famous, Sam. You just need to be mine. You’re all I need, my love. All I need,” she murmured, kissing Sam’s head again.
Sam leaned into the touch, sniffling a bit. The two sat in silence, watching as Elsa sang Let It Go. It was nice cuddling her big sister, even if she wasn’t feeling so hot. Just like they were kids. Disney movies and cuddles.
Tara was so damn lucky.
Eventually, Sam broke the silence.
“Can you play Dreams again?”
Tara groaned, reaching over for the remote.
“You don't even like Fleetwood Mac,” she grumbled, switching to the Spotify app.
They listened to the song at least fifty more times.
—
A few months later
“What the FUCK?”
Tara scrambled down the stairs, running towards her sister’s angry, confused voice. Her thoughts were racing- it couldn’t be Ghostface, right? No. It couldn’t be. It had been nearly two years since the last attack. This couldn’t be it.
Sliding into the kitchen, Tara panted, her hands on her knees. There Sam stood, one hand holding a steaming cup of coffee, the other holding her phone. Her big sister looked angry, puzzled even.
“What? What’s wrong? Is it Ghostface? The Twins? What, Sam? What?” Tara gasped, a hand on the stitch in her side.
Sam just shook her head, shoving her phone in Tara's face. “Spotify Wrapped just came out. How is Dreams my number one song? I don’t even like Fleetwood Mac!”
Despite her anger, annoyance, and lack of breath, Tara laughed.
That’s what she thought.

It’s time to head back to horror school with Return to Horror High (1987), a spooky spoof on slasher films. What is this film about? Well, that’d be telling, wouldn’t it? The bizarre narrative and goofy hijinks have the Grue-Crew scratching their heads with its ‘mayta’ and ‘paradig’em’ references. (Go, Bill!) Regardless of all the shenanigans, the results are fun if often confusing.
At the time of this writing, Return to Horror High is available for streaming from Hoopla and Tubi, and as PPV from multiple sources.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Crystal, will be Puppet Master (1989), the first of Charles Band’s still-growing franchise.
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at

Support Class Title Chases Tighten Up At Barber Motorsports Park
Just Two Points Separate Three Riders In REV'IT! Twins Cup.
You won’t find a MotoAmerica Championship more closely fought than the one for the REV’IT! Twins Cup title after Sunday’s eventful race at Barber Motorsports Park.
How’s this for close? Defending REV’IT! Twins Cup Champion Blake Davis leads Gus Rodio and Hayden Schultz by just two points after three rounds and six races. And despite not taking part in the two races at Daytona and DNFing the first race at Road Atlanta, Rocco Landers is lurking in fourth just 12 points behind.
Rocco Landers (97) leads teammate Gus Rodio (6) and Kayla Yaakov (131) in the REV'IT! Twins Cup race on Sunday. Photo by Brian J. Nelson
Three straight wins will do that for you.
Landers won both races in Alabama and those two wins, combined with two non-finishes by former runaway championship leader Gus Rodio, have flipped the championship upside down.
REV’IT! Twins Cup race two kicked off the feature events on Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park, and Rodio Racing – Powered by Robem Engineering Aprilia rider Landers completed a perfect weekend where he earned the pole, won race one and was also victorious in race two. Landers’ teammate Rodio didn’t fare as well, unfortunately. He had the points lead coming into the weekend, but a crash in each of the two races moved him down to second in the standings where he is tied with Schultz.
Davis finished second in Sunday’s race aboard his N2 Racing/BobbleHeadMoto Yamaha and took over first place in the standings by two points over Rodio. The WagBar MP13 Racing’s Kayla Yaakov got her second podium finish in as many days with a third-place finish on Sunday to go with her second-place finish on Saturday. Yaakov missed the Daytona and Road Atlanta rounds of the REV’IT! Twins Cup Championship due to injury, but she came back strong at Barber Motorsports Park in her debut weekend in the class.
“Somehow, I’m like 12 points back now, Landers said. “It’s wild. We missed the first round and then we had a DNF in Atlanta, which was infuriating. I couldn’t give it up to my whole Robem Engineering Rodio Racing team enough, my mechanic Chad works so hard to make the bike perfect for me. Matt Spicer is helping me out so much, Robem. The whole Rodio family. Such a bummer to see that happen to Gus (Rodio). Always nice to get a team one-two, and for Aprilia, as well. Maybe I could talk them into letting me finish the season off for him, because we’re getting kind of close in the championship. It would be nice. But it was a good race, though. I enjoyed it.”
Levi Badie (71) won his first career MotoAmerica Junior Cup race with a .003 of a second victory over Hayden Bicknese (69) on Sunday. Photo by Brian J. Nelson

This baby by @cr-familiar-faces was a long time coming, but, man, is it good to finally have. To round out the central cast in Dr.Indigo's Star vs. the Forces of Evil/JoJo's Bizarre Adventure "Stand and Deliver" multi-story, here's Marco, "present" and future, and his appropriately named Stand: Kung Fu Fighting as they appear in the former's centric story "Highway to Hex". In this tale, a personal tragedy that comes with having a close-quarter-range Stand (like all Joestars since Part 3), drives the former safe kid into becoming the universe's most powerful warrior, the proven holder of the title "God of Destruction", and the 16th (and probably final) husband of Hekapoo. Of course, he owes no small part to that success from KKF, whose abilities prove to be beyond OP.

Cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers. Or in Spain, Caníbales Humanoides Ululantes Demoníacos. Either way, it’s C.H.U.D., some serious campy 80s gold! The Grue-Crew revisits this fun monster movie from 1984 for this episode of Decades of Horror 1980s. John Heard, Daniel Stern, and Christopher Curry lead the cast in Douglas Cheek’s feature film debut. But the movie is about the creatures and maybe a small cameo from John Goodman… kidding. Check out what the Grue-Crew thinks of this sci-fi/horror classic.
At the time of this writing, C.H.U.D. is available to stream from these free-with-ads sites: Roku, Tubi, PlutoTV, Hoopla, Plex; and from these subscription sites: Amazon Prime, Arrow; and of course, there are PPV options. The film is also available as a Blu-ray disc from Arrow Video.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Wicked City (1987). Why does Bill keep warning the 80s Grue-Crew about the content of this film? Hmmm . . .
