I have been thinking about Celesjunko because their dynamic pre Despair could be so interesting and I need somewhere to shout about it.

Celestia would project a lot onto Junko, I think. She'd see in her a kindred spirit, another girl that was angry at the world and comforted herself with money. Someone else who escaped her old identity and hid it behind make-up and extravagant clothes. Someone who shares her intelligence and cunning and less squeaky clean morals. I don't think Celestia would ever learn just how unhinged Junko could be (and she wouldn't have agreed with it if she did) but I do think Junko could've opened up to her about the whole despair thing much more than she could've done with any other student, at least in THH.

Anyway, evil femmes should date.

This is ABSOLUTELY correct. Celestia/Junko is fascinating because Junko is everything Celestia wants to be & imagines herself to be - hyperintelligent, incredible manipulator, flawless mask over her true self, emotionally unreachable for everyone around her. The only person who ever really defeated Junko was Junko. If she hadn't intentionally left clues to lead the students to conclusions in order to make the game more interesting, no one would ever have known. That's exactly the life Celestia wants to live, people bowing at her feet and all.

But Celeste would never know! In no lifetime would Celeste ever learn how competent and dangerous and absolutely perfect for her Junko is. Because to Junko, Celestia is playing this little adorable game of play-pretend trying to be Junko. Why would Junko ever reveal herself? Look at how hard she's trying to sell herself as a liar! Look at how WELL she's doing! She's cute enough to eat right up. Cute enough to put in a cage with a pack of rats and lovingly watch as she is devoured alive. Cute enough to tell her they're playing Russian Roulette and leave not a single bullet unloaded. And isn't that love? For Junko, isn't that love?

*FOAMS AT THE MOUTH* CELESJUNKO. they’re so good they’re SO GOOD junko first takes an interest in celeste when she sees celeste win a game of poker against a smug sleazy adult man,, the man just breaks down and junko is intrigued bc “ohhh that’s a good flavour of despair…” and celeste is so unaffected by it?? it draws junko to her, that this girl can make people so desperate and broken without batting an eyelid

they’re similar to maizoshima in the whole “my ultimate revolves around understanding people. i know you” vs “you know nothing. i am planning your death at your loved one’s hands” EXCEPT while sayaka sees Nothing wrong w junko, celeste can tell there’s smth… off abt her - the part that drives her insane is that she can’t figure out what it is. she’s spent so long watching people’s tells and figuring out exactly what they mean, and she recognises junko’s tells every time they happen (a flick of her hair, studying her nails, her hand squeezing mukuro’s arm) but she can’t work out what they signify. junko is the one person she can’t quite understand, and she hates it

THEYRE SO GOOD AS DESPAIR GFS TOO,,, celeste is v difficult to make fall into despair bc she’s not particularly one for human connection, like sayaka w her bandmates or makoto w komaru - her main motivation is money, to secure her dream. so junko takes kind of a “if you can’t beat em, join em” approach and tells celeste just enough to rope her in - promises of money, if celeste is willing to kill to get it. again, celeste can tell there’s something more to this deal that junko isn’t telling her about, but her dream is so close she can taste it, so she accepts anyway. she finds she has a taste for it, forcing the embodiments of hope to kneel at her feet, and junko starts to feel something other than despair - awe. they bring the world to its knees together, with celeste rolling in money and junko relishing in the destruction they create
