Poke Milkweed
Asclepias exaltata
another denizen of cedar bog ( a fen). Poke molkweed is deffinetly a crowd pleaser, associated with open woodlands and alkaline flat woods in general. where the other two associated woodland malk weeds are 4 leaf (dense shade generalist) and red ring tooth muelk weed( a species that is associated with open mixed mesophytic woods and semi acidic woods).

“Cedar Bog Nature Preserve was the first nature preserve in Ohio purchased with state money and is considered by many to be Ohio’s premiere natural area. Owned by the state of Ohio, the site is operated by the non-profit Cedar Bog Association for the Ohio History Connection.”
Wetlands play a vital role in the hydrologic cycle. Lush plant life and its root system helps to stabilize soil and hold back runoff. This allows time for infiltration into aquifers and the production of year long streams. In the past 200 years over half of American wetlands have been either disrupted or disturbed. Wetland disruption or destruction results in floods and erosion during rainy periods and dry stream beds the rest of the year. This makes the conservation and rehabilitation of wetlands of the upmost importance. On top of the water cycle benefits wetlands and bogs are homes to thriving biomes that have evolved and adapted for life in these marshy lands.

The Cedar Swamp Trail at the 850-acre Dryden Kuser Natural Area which is located at High Point State Park in #NewJersey. This #wetland that was created by a retreating #glacier over 15,000 years ago. Thousands of years ago a lake covering thirty acres and reaching depths of twenty feet filled this small valley. Over time, mosses built bogs and trees sprouted here. One of the unique trees here is the Atlantic white cedar. This kind of forested wetland is usually found close to sea level and not in the mountains. At an elevation of 1,500 feet, this Atlantic white cedar bog is believed to be the highest in the world. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #highpointnj #highpoint #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #skylands #thisisnj #jerseycollective #njspots #explorenj #igersnj #ushistory #americanhistory #statepark #njstateparks #highpointstatepark #nature #cedarbog #cedarswamptrail #drydenkusernaturalarea (at High Point State Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs4MEQMFaQJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=wpu95tip8pxp

Lance leaf Buckthorn,
Rhamnus lanceolata
Bring this plant back, make it common, make it known for fall interest, make it known for it’s benefits and scale and structure.
A show stopper, an under utilized native that can thrive in rocky conditions and specifically does well in alkaline hillsides, at one point Cincinnati Ohio was known for having this species in such high abundance that it was considered a weed species. I wish that was still the case, now Cincinnati is honey suckle and other suitable habitat is invasive buckthorn, privot, and autumn olive. This is a critical nectar species during transition from spring to summer, a bee and wasp magnet. Here we see it in alkaline uplifted marl and till located along risen sections of the black ash white cedar swamp woodland of cedar bog(a fen).
This species was also an incredible thicket island species critical to prairies and I never see it in restoration or recreation plots.
