okay so. imagine in hyrule’s hyrule, they have the All Hallows’ Eve tradition of dressing up as biblical figures. hyrule probably didn’t get to celebrate it much until after his first adventure when he started assisting in the rebuilding of hyrule and hanging around civilization more.
so he’s like 10-16, perfect halloween age. and even before his adventure, he’s heard stories about the hero of legend, and he is OBSESSED. St. Link of Kakariko is his favorite saint. they even share a name! so when he finds out about halloween costume traditions, hyrule obviously loves dressing up as legend. so much that he probably barely ever dressed as any other biblical figure. plus, why would he waste a perfectly good costume?
as he grows and reads more books at the castle’s library, he finds artistic depictions of the hero of legend and alters the costume to be a little more accurate every year. eventually he’s got a near-perfect Legend outfit!
fast forward a few years when hyrule meets legend through portal shenanigans and he’s like “Wow, great St. Link costume! The medallions are a little off, but everything else is perfect!!”

legend and hyrule are not canonically catholic. hyrule's irl art team were playing with symbolism, as many people do with other religions/cultures. if anything, the downfall duo are implied to be atheist (as there is no mention of the golden three before ocarina of time) or polytheist (working with current official lore which only mentions din, farore, nayru, and hylia). also, catholicism is a very specific branch of christianity that would require even more evidence of a canonical religion. headcanons are free game but the downfall duo do not have official beliefs.

The Chain as Things I Learned About the Byzantine Empire
AKA: I got a 100% on the Byzantine test so I’m making it everyone’s problem
:p @vio-starzz @shadowlinktheshadow @trippygalaxy @mushr0oms-and-m0ss @treasure-goblin
Tumblr media
Time
Emperor Justinian saw all these random and incoherent laws and went, “Is anyone gonna make that make sense?” And not waited for and answer
Basically, the Empire had all these laws that went for different places and people were getting confused, even himself, so he decided to end the maddness
He condensed the laws into the needed and useful ones and scrapped the “wtf??” ones
This made it easier on them and himself
Sky
So there was this guy, St. Cyril, and he was Christian and he wanted places like Russia to be Christian too
Problem was, the languages were different and it was hard to teach when they couldn’t understand you
So what did buddy old pal St. Cyril do? He made his own fucking language
It’s crazy, look up the Cyrillic alphabet I’m serious-
Warriors
They made a 14 mile long wall-
No, it’s not a Great Wall of China, but still
It was all a one wall protection unit for their capital, Constantinople(modern day Istanbul)
It was a good idea, I mean, they were on a peninsula so they only really needed to protect on side on land🤷🏽‍♂️
Wild
When Justinian was Emperor, he looked at silk and was like, “is anyone gonna steal that and make their empire rich?” And not waited for an answer🤷🏽‍♂️
Justinian was honestly the best part of the unit-
Wild is just the smuggling of the silk guys-
Wind
Wind is the Schism of Christianity
Basically, the two churches, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, hated each other
Rome, basically the capital of the ROMan Catholic church was close to being invaded, so they asked for help
They were denied help and the Pope, the head of the Roman Catholic church, got pissed
So the Pope wrote to the Emperor and the Patriarch, the head of the Eastern Orthodox church
In this letter(at least I think it was a letter) the Pope basically said, “Fuck you, you’re no longer allowed to be Christian” but didn’t actually say that. The Pope just excommunicated them
So the Patriarch went, “Fuck you too, and now you’re not allowed to be Christian” and excommunicated the Pope💀💀💀
This is Wind because the two sides excommunicated each other out of spite and we know that Wind has a lot of that
Legend
Bro is the Hagia Sofia
Please look it up, it looks so pretty-
As mentioned earlier, Justinian ordered the smuggling of silk so the people who liked in the modern day Europe area didn’t have to travel all the way to China to get it
Justinian used these riches to build the Hagia Sofia
The Hagia Sofia was originally a Christian church, as Christianity was the main religion rip roman mythology
Later, the Byzantines were conquured by the Ottoman Turks, who were Muslims
The Ottomans turned the Hagia Sofia into a mosque and built those pillars you see in the picture when you see the modern version
Then, probably some 10-20 years ago, it was converted into a museum
The Hagia Sofia has been through a lot in the last, at least, 1000 years. Yet, she still stands, just like our emo rabbit boy
I can’t think of one for Twilight, Hyrule, or Four right now but if I do, I’ll make a part two

Link
Well, maybe not specifically catholic. But behold, OFFICIAL ART: https://cdn.wikimg.net/en/zeldawiki/images/a/ab/LinkPraying.png
in the original legend of zelda game there's a bible (localized to the book of magic due to nintendo of america's guidelines), a cross in the adventure of link, and in a link to the past, there's art of him kneeling in front of a crucifix. hyrule has its own religions but there are undeniable christian roots.

So when the player has Link crucify koroks the obvious Doylist explaination is because the player is in control of Link and the player lives in a universe where. You know.
But what’s the watsonian explanation? I’d suggest that the most likely explaination is just that crucifixion as a death sentence existed at some point in the legend of Zelda universe.
The funnier explanation that I’ve come up with from established logic in universe is that some Catholics fell through their N64s at some point into the universe of Hyrule and established a new Rome.

I love the idea of writing Vio as goth within the context of Four Swords, as opposed to goth in the sense of my 21st century irl perspective.
There’s a quote that I found via Wikipedia via the NYT that encapsulates the genre pretty well: “In the world of Goth, nature itself lurks as a malign protagonist, causing flesh to rot, rivers to flood, monuments to crumble and women to turn into slatterns, their hair streaming and lipstick askew.” That, plus a few notes on Victorian mourning culture, as well as punk elements like androgyny or gender anarchy, with some elements of pagan symbolism sprinkled in for flavor.
The idea of paganism in the land of Hyrule is actually so delicious I need a minute. I feel like a lot of fan writers are familiar with the wealth of Christian religious trauma that can be applied to every mention of Hylia and the Golden Three, but there are other belief systems in the series.
Vio as a character has some very interesting possibilities open to him. First off, he used to be part of one person, who could arguably be considered dead after splitting into Green, Blue, Red, and Vio. Depending on how you write them, even when they recombine the original still might not exist anymore. Vio is the contrary one, the one who least resembles the original- I feel like it’s not out of the question for him to see that death and rebirth as a kind of punk freedom, and cheerfully mourn that change in the same way I cheerfully mourn the person I used to be. I love a good skull or two. Hell yes I died, look at what I’ve become. It’s not mocking as much as it is a strange form of respect, if you pressed me to define it. Also, importantly, it’s fun.
Secondly, there’s their association with the Minish. Minish culture is very animistic, the Shinto influences are obvious if you look, and even if the Forest Minish have a rather Catholic (read: Hylian) chapel I think there’s evidence enough that it’s a result of cultural exchange. I am kind of feral about the idea of Zelda being essentially Jesus, and her knight making little offerings of fruit in the woods to the spirits of root and vine. For Vio in particular, I’d be tempted to introduce him to Gerudo beliefs via Shadow. The goddess of the sands, ancestor worship, etc. Not that Shadow is very devout, but he’s willing to talk about it to satisfy his nerd boyfriend.
I don’t think I need to say much about gender anarchy. He’s a Link. We all know.
Lastly, there’s Vio’s position as the member of the group that represents elemental earth, both the foundation of life and its final destination. Vio would absolutely have a complex relationship with death, both in abstract forms like death of the former self as well as quite literal death, considering his position as a fragment of a whole and the avatar of the element most closely tied to it. If anything, the only element closer is Shadow’s, void or aether. I think if he took some time on his journey of self-discovery, in a world where he didn’t have to rejoin into Link, he’d at the very least end up visiting a cemetery or two to try to connect to that aspect of who he is.
Don’t get me started on the fashion choices all of this could result in, or we’ll be here all week.

do you think hyrule is catholic bc in the first game they didn’t have the goddesses and stuff like that yet so they just used Mary Jesus and god it’s only really hinted at in the English release but if my translation are correct it just states it in Japanese ( but again I’m still learning and I haven’t looked it up so my translation might be wrong)
I mean, I’ve never played his games but I’ve seen the cross on the shield and the picture of him praying and stuff, so it’s obvious he was fashioned after medieval knights, who were Catholic, so you could say that for a modern AU. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But Nintendo has since (attempted to) make lore with the goddesses and stuff, so in LU I would say no.

linked universe things i would love to see (aka things i might write fics about) & me rambling about religion across the zelda timeline
- the chain being sent to the adult timeline (probably like 10 years post oot) and adult timeline!zelda gets to see link again… these two are basically war buddies and i think a lot of their worries and regrets would be eased if they could see how well the other is doing :)
- legend inviting hyrule to stay with him in his time period when the whole adventure thing is over. (I am still heartbroken from “time’s lazy river” by boo_boo_thefool. this fic is so so beautiful but also devestating. I can’t recommend it enough but it is very very sad).
- i would love to see the links talking about their religions and the gods! each zelda game has very unique religion and culture, and i wonder how the links would react to learning about each of them. for example, i know we kinda blame everything on hylia, but only sky and wild know who she is.
1. a lot of them worship the golden goddesses
2. twilight acknowledges the golden goddesses but probably worships ordana
3. legend knows about the golden goddesses but he is catholic (this is pretty much canon somehow)
4. hylia and the golden goddesses are completely forgotten by the time hyrule’s games take place, but the culture and imagery are very christian
5. sky’s game references the golden goddesses but it seems like only hylia is worshipped
6. wild’s games acknowledge the golden goddesses AND hylia, which is cool how she appears at the beginning and end of the timeline
apoligies for the long post. I would have made it two but i am on mobile and copying and pasting is hard!

Hello and Welcome to my Ramble Corner
Hi! My name is MarginDoodles2407, but y'all can call me Margin :)
I am a lifelong Zelda Nerd™ and am totally and completely normal about Ocarina of Time and Hyrule Warriors, especially. I am also Zelink Trash™ so. Important to note.
More importantly, I am Roman Catholic and Pro-Life. My faith is central to who I am as a person and while I try not to get political on this blog- because we all need fun places to hang out without the stress of the real world- I will not hesitate to post about my Catholicism and Pro-Lifery, so if that's not your jam? Understandable. But please, be respectful to my Religion and values, as I will be to yours.
Okay, back to nerdiness. I am also absolutely obsessed with Star Wars- especially the prequels and all they entail- and my natural habitat is weeping openly about warrior space priests.
I am an Artist and a Writer, and requests for both- especially Zelda themed- are always open. Just keep it Safe for Work :) In case you're interested, my AO3 is Margin_Doodles.
I am also the co-creator of @tloz-heros-spirit, an Original Zelda Game Concept that I run with my friend @whyoneartheven! If you like lore-accurate storytelling, over-the-top character designs, and seafoam-green ghost fire, give it a check-out!
And now, a handy-dandy Tagging System™:
#margin rambles: my musings about life and other random things
#margin writes: exactly what it sounds like
#my art: also exactly what it sounds like
#margin's links: wherein I ramble about my interpretations of the various Links. also usually includes the Zeldas :)
Have fun!

What….
Is the…
“Master door”…?
The Master Door is a truly insane chainfic that was written based off of another chainfic by myself and a few others. The chainfic started with people suggesting that the heroes could meet in the order their games were released, and someone had the brilliant idea that Legend's hand was still on his door when he and Hyrule got portalled to Time's world, and thus the door came with him.
The Master Door concept is based off the idea that Legend's front door becomes a very important part of the team. Because our little catholic ass-bunny probably got his stuff blessed by the priest (which, in his world apparently means it's actually stronger) that also means his door is basically blessed and able to withstand all sorts of crap
Anyways, there's chainfics at @linkeduniverserigmarolerigmarole that can give the full context that we all got :)

I've been thinking about my Zelda au again, and it's really difficult to navigate how i want to portray Hyrule as this imperialist (and catholic. but that's my personal hc im projecting here) empire thats got a bit of a dark past (something ive always found interesting ever since oot even slightly hinted at it. and now its come up again in totk even though disappointingly they didnt really bring it into question) but at the same time... i love princess zelda shes also one of my favorites from my own au and i feel like I'm getting into apologist territory by how much i favor her 😭 help

Speaking of churches, I played Zelda II before the release of TotK and there were. So many crosses in that game. I was just like damn Hyrule is Catholic 😂
