Post columbine: 2000 prom.

Missy Mendo & Kelly Vandame.
Missy was a sophomore at the time of the 1999 massacre. it looks like she was invited to the prom. because it looks like it was in 2000 because of the date. it confuses me that it was a 1999 dance. maybe she was a freshman in 1998, then sophomore in 1999, then junior in 2000, most likely she graduated in 2001.
Kelly was 17 years old at the time of the massacre. grade not specified. she graduated in 2000. in the picture she is with her prom date, she later married him and they had 2 children.

The Columbine Victims: Cassie Bernall
Tumblr media
Cassie was hiding in the library when shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold entered and began shooting. According to witnesses, Harris slammed his hand on the table Cassie was hiding under and said ‘peek-a-boo’ before shooting under the table. Cassie was fatally shot in the right side of her head, the blast recoiled causing Harris a nose injury.
It was initially reported that Cassie had been asked whether she believed in God and after saying ‘Yes,’ had been shot however it was later found another student, who survived the shooting, was asked the question. Cassie’s presentation as a Christian martyr was one that persisted, a book called ‘She Said Yes: The Unlikely Matyrdom of Cassie Bernall’ published four months after the massacre added to the rumour.
Cassie Bernall is one of the 13 victims murdered during the Columbine High School Massacre, in which shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold murdered 12 students and one teacher before shooting themselves.

Within our recently announced plans to re-open our show next fall, we felt it best to give back to the Columbine community.
As of today, we have started a 30 day fundraiser in hopes of raising $100 for the Columbine Memorial Foundation.
Throughout the past few years, The Columbine Memorial Foundation has been short on donations to upkeep their beautiful and honorable Memorial in Littleton, Colorado. As the Memorial and it's significance, are also important in our production, we felt it best to lend a hand.
If you head on over to our Instagram,
@astoryofcolumbine
For the next 30 days we will be raising money for the Foundation. 100% of proceeds will go directly towards the foundation, please consider donating to this incredible cause.
" ... Sometimes I come to this place to reflect, to remember, a way to have their lives be remembered for decades to come. Set in stone. Memorialized. A place where people can come to pay their respects, where students can have some peace, and where parents can feel closer..."~

i think of school shooters the same way that id think of a spoiled child being told "no" to having their third serving of ice cream for the day it's like they figure out that life isn't fair (which literally everyone else figured out at birth + mental illnesses) in spite of their many privileges and then they fucking lose it
and as much as i think back to eric harris and how i feel bad for him on occasion, for him and dylan to grasp at straws for reasons to hate others (which is not to undermine the bullying and torment they received) is insane to me (like him getting pissed about girls not calling him back or dylan slapping his coworker because she told him off about something).
all of this and their childishness in spite of the fact that they were literally planning a massive terrorist attack (which isn't so childish) is essentially prominent in how they mention that the shooting is their fault entirely. did they just think that bbecause you say something that it automatically becomes true? i mean, e&d were going to kill themselves and it ain't possible to bring a dead person to court, so of course they'd arrest mark manes and philip duran and bring robyn to court
i just don't think eric and dylan really understood the consequences of their actions because they were so caught up in this retarded escapist fantasy where they were the heroes in tarantino films (and teenagers). i think the concept of this just makes me sad in general, since the way they behaved during and leading up to the shooting was an obvious way for them to feel powerful and in control, which had been stripped from them by that very school.
i also don't mean to undermine the horrid environment at columbine and the obvious favoritism that plagued the student body and staff. harris and klebold were incredibly mentally ill, which when is combined with a toxic environment in which you spend your developmental years and a mutually hate-filled friendship, results in tragedy.
it also hurts my heart to read anecdotes about the victims, eric and dylan included, from those who loved them. hearing about how cassie bernall struggled with suicidality, thoughts of killing her parents, and briefly experimenting with the goth subculture made me wonder if eric or dylan ever considered that others felt the same pain and troubles that they did. hearing about how devon adams had to decide on which friend's funeral to attend, one murdering the other and many more, reading about an interaction brooks had with rachel while they were smoking wherein they discussed their religious affiliations respectfully, learning about how daniel mauser would attend anti-gun protests, devon sharing how dylan saved one of rachels interpretive dances by fixing the tape, etc make me think of how intertwined littleton is (especially columbine kids) and the domino effect that it's had on the world.
so many shooters have cited e&d as inspirations, people have replicated wrath and natural selection shirts, written fics about them, plays, films, etcetera. there's online communities dedicated to colimbine, sometimes as part of a larger true crime community, where people discuss and learn about it. i myself began research approx. 2 years ago and have since developed a special interest regarding columbine. deaths, other than ones because of copycat shooters/killers such as sol pais are linked to columbine. it's had such an imnense effect on the world that cannot be understated solely because of its magnitude.
columbine was so senseless and i hate that 14 children and a beloved teacher died so that e&d could "even the score." i hope, in their final moments, that eric and dylan felt ashamed and embarrassed of what they did, the world, music, movies, their hobbies and interests they discarded, the people they left behind who've been left to pcik up the pieces of their destruction

i had previously tried to explain to a the kind of policing of girl attraction to girls that was common for us, late 90s early 00s. and before that, but it seems like it’s a disappearing particularity outside of religious communities maybe. they never have any idea what i’m talking about. we had a gym class lesson specifically about how to watch out for girls being predatory to you in the locker room. i remember what this felt like! i know straight up minimally 50% of you wlw reading this right now being my age have some kind of experience with a girl you were (consciously or not) romantically involved with ages child to teen where you faced some kind of institutional intervention that maybe even pretended like it was secular and not homophobic over the inappropriate nature and intensity of your relationship. like when her two psychiatrist parents sent her to inpatient in eighth grade to keep her from you. or maybe you got moved out of school (like some of you i know, and also cassie bernall per she said yes). felt like childrens hour shit all the time. anyway this is one of the reasons i now feel like i will be arrested for asking someone out but the funny thing is i’ve healed the homophobia fear part and now i mostly feel the scrupulousity about men, which is insanely funny. there’s other reasons for this some of which seem obvious but it’s also obviously never predatory to ask a girl out explicitly (since we are so hopeless about this, it’s a kindness really) but asking a man out is for some reason lmao

The thing is, even if the Cassie Bernall things didn't happen, the proof that she didn't say "yes" is that someone else did

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Columbine School Shooting. Since that fateful day, lives of students, teachers, and parents alike changed all across America. Students had to learn to hide and play dead, just incase. Teachers had learn hide students fast and keep them quiet, while having to keep themselves safe aswell. Parents fearing that their children won't come home, and that they will never be able to pack them a lunch again or hold them. In my lifetime, there have been 300+ school shootings since, and there hasn't been any changes made. Unless you count buying a bulletproof bag, instead a colorful one. How many kids have to die before change happens? Changes should've happen when, Cassie Bernall, 17; Steven Curnow, 14; Corey DePooter, 17; Kelly Fleming, 16; Matthew Kechter, 16; Daniel Mauser, 15; Daniel Rohrbough, 15; William "Dave" Sanders, 47; Rachel Scott, 17; Isaiah Shoels, 18; John Tomlin, 16; Lauren Townsend, 18, and Kyle Velasquez, 16, all lost their lives on April 20th, 1999. Thoughts and prayers are getting us nowhere. It's time to stand up and demand change

In honor of Oscar's weekend, this year will celebrate 20 years since "Bowling for Columbine" won for Best Documentary.
"Bowling for Columbine" is what started it all for us. Autumn Cazier first watched the film in a high school sociology class, and at only age 17, would be inspired to write the script of our show. It would go on to debut at Olympus High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, just a few months later.
Throughout the years, there have been many successful and riveting films, plays, and books published on Columbine. However, unfortunately, many are now considered outdated or deemed as inaccurate by the media.
Every year, our script undergoes significant changes in order to keep up with the times, and provide the most accurate depictions on Columbine as possible. Though many sources on Columbine still reign true in 2023, we guarantee to always be one of them. Additionally, this also means that each production of our show differs from the last. Our 2018 show was wildly different from our 2022 run, and our 2024 run will also change its course as new information is always emerging, even now nearly 24 years later.
