So...I might as well post all my Yu-Gi-Oh! OTPs. Not to mention it's to hopefully clear up like who I ship with who. I have had people think that just because Atem and Bast are together, that must mean Yugi and Catzi will be too. And let me just say, no. That's not the case. While Yugi and Catzi are the renicarnation of Atem and Bast, it doesn't mean they will end up together again. Yugi and Catzi are just good friends.

DestinyLoveshipping (Pharaoh Atem/Queen Bast) – This kinda speaks for itself. I always felt Atem deserved to have a good strong Queen by his side. (Not to mention I never shipped him with Tea…or Yugi for that matter. Seriously…why do people love Puzzle shipping so much? -_-; ) So, when making Bast, I tried to picture of what would be the girl he would fall for. And thus, Bast was born. She’s mature, quiet, strong-willed, and kind. She is also not afraid when facing off anyone she duels. Like her husband, she shows no mercy. I do feel like Atem would love her strong good heart. Her being beautiful is just a plus. Their relationship seriously makes me smile because omg the angst and feels. Ah! I love these two so much. CX

Loneshipping (Marik Ishtar/Catzi Kaioh) – I’m going to say this, over the years of me coming back to YGO every now and then, I feel like Catzi has gone through a few guys. First time I made her; she was with Yugi. Second time, with Ryou. And now coming back a third time, I loved Marik so much that I loved the idea of him and Catzi being together. I mean, I already did kinda ship them back then too. The thought of Marik falling for Catzi due to her feisty ways as well as the fact she is willing to forgive him despite what he did. This relationship just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. CX

Guardianshipping (Yugi Muto/Carrie Francess) – I have said it before but, this ship was kinda a crack ship. And this was before I decided to make Carrie a flexible character. Yup, she was still a DP character when I thought of this ship. But now, she is no longer tied to DP and now I am free to have her be any character I see fit. This relationship between the two has developed and thanks to my friend, she got me to love them very much. Just picturing Yugi being such a sweet boyfriend to Carrie just makes me heart melt.

Drawnshipping (Joey Wheeler/Yuki Fumiya) – As I have mentioned before, I am not the biggest fan of other people’s OCs. If they are well written and great characters, I am willing to make an exception. Luckily, someone I became friends with who helped me love ships like Guardianshipping created her own characters and she made some really good ones. Yuki is a nice character and I do like her relationship with Joey. Plus, it’s hilarious that she has a crush on him and he’s downright freaking clueless about it. XD Ah, Joey, I love you but man you are dense. I also like this pair way more than Polarshipping. I have never cared for Joey/Mai especially with their age gap.

Blissfulshipping (Ryou Bakura/Chrissy Major) – I don’t do a lot of self inserts. XD I have only done it once before and that was with SWAT Kats. But the fact I had loved Marik/Catzi, I felt so bad for Ryou. The poor boy is forgotten so much, I feel he deserves some love and attention. And by goodness, Chrissy would be sure to give him that love and attention. But she is respectful of his boundaries too due to his fangirls never leaving him alone.

Warmshipping (Chase Fumiya/Tea Gardner) Again, like with Yuki, Chase is an interesting character. Plus, the fact Tea being the only one to stand up to him besides his sister Yuki would make him start to crush on her. I like to think Tea would come to care for Chase and wishing to change him for the better. Not to mention, I never really shipped Tea with anyone (except with Kaiba honestly) like I certainly never liked her being with Yugi or Atem for that matter. With Chase, I can see this working out. ^-^ Not to mention she would keep him from getting in trouble.

Raidershipping (Thief King Bakura/Carmen Sandiego) – When I saw the Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego, I really loved the concept of it as well as Carmen herself. She is downright gorgeous, and I couldn’t help but like the idea of her being with Bakura. Her calm sassiness would go great with his sarcastic ego. Plus, she would probably be the only one to put up with him. XD I can picture the two going on missions and using their thieving skills to keep artifacts safe. Also, this would be after he has been redeemed.

Sideshipping (Tristan Taylor/Miho Nosaka) – Let me just say this…I don’t really care for Miho. So why is she in this? Because this Miho is different to what we saw in the season 0 anime. I never liked the fact she is just some gold-digging dense girl. She never seemed like the type to even hang out with Yugi and the others. I know they wanted to have it so that Tea is not the only girl, but seriously. There were barely any good things about her. So, for this, Miho is more like her manga self. She’s shy but caring and quiet. I feel like, if she wasn’t embarrassed by that mean teacher, I think Tristan would have had a shot with her. Plus, I don’t ship Tristan with Serenity. Why? The duel he, Serenity, and Duke had in the Noah’s Ark. Duke didn’t baby Serenity while Tristan did. He acted like she couldn’t do a thing for herself. True it was her first duel, but she could learn and I’m sure Duke could trust her to do that. Tristan didn’t and I feel like their relationship just wouldn’t last even if Joey were to let it happen. Plus, Serenity seems to like Tristan as another brother anyway. Like I said, I know Tristan can have a girl, and I rather be it Miho.

Honorable mentions since I didn’t include them here because I haven’t drawn them…yet:

Cheershipping (Duke Devlin/Serenity Wheeler) – As I said above, I ship Duke/Serenity way more than Tristan/Serenity. I just like how he is willing to believe in Serenity and the fact he says in the manga of how she helps him be stronger. I just…awe!

Empathyshipping (Seto Kaiba/Ayano Shibata) – Another friend of mine came up with this character after seeing DSOD. Like Kaiba needs some serious help, so she came up with a therapist for him and even ended up shipping her with him. It’s freaking hilarious XD and Ayano is great.

Okay, to put some limitations on this, I’m only including the WIPs that I’ve done more than a synopsis for... that I can remember... that’s on Google Drive... that I actually think I might post one day... but haven’t posted yet because my posted WIPs are fairly easy to identify... okay... I got tagged by @unsteadyshade and I’m tagging @faunusrights and @alexlayer69

1) Across Time - Inuyasha AU where Weiss gets thrown back in time to the ancient past, where she meets two demons (Yang and Blake) warring against each other over a misunderstanding.

2) Alpha’s Devotion - Omega’s Strength, but from Winter’s POV.

3) Bears, Oh My - An exhausted Winter, lost on a hike, comes across a cabin where Yang lives with her three pet bears.

4) Brave New World - Continuation of the Dishonored AU where Ruby and Winter reflect on the new Mantle.

5) Bruised - Third installment to the ace!Yang AU.

6) Coming Home - Based on Dash’s Tiny Knight AU, Princess Blake is betrayed and stranded far from home and must rely on a reticent knight named Weiss to return to her kingdom.

7) Complications Always Arise - Papa Schnee is demanding Weiss marry before he’ll allow her to take his place as head of the SDC, so Yang volunteers to pretend to be Weiss’ beloved. No one else knows the relationship is fake, least of all Blake and Winter, and it’s just a bunch of pain.

8) Divided - Continuation of the By Moonlight AU where Whitley returns to the castle and Winter’s not upset by that- and Winter’s upset by the fact she’s not upset and has to figure out why her inner wolf is cool with this when she should, by all rights, be furious.

9) Dragonsbane - Mage Knight Winter hears tale of a dragon in the countryside that the local villages wish to see vanquished. Winter, however, has other plans.

10) Eye of the Beholder - Blinded and near death after a battle, Winter is rescued by the mysterious Yang and is nursed back to health despite her protests otherwise. (It’s a Medusa!AU.)

11) Fabled - Fable 3 AU where Princess Ruby and Princess Yang are forced to confront the fact that Queen Raven has lost her fucking mind, only to discover that fear drove the woman insane- a fear they must confront themselves.

12) Fields of Love - Farmer Yang offers a job and housing to apparent single mother Winter and her young daughter Penny. What starts as a kind gesture grows into something so much more.

13) Full Circle - Van Helsing (2004) AU, Winter and Weiss, amnesiacs employed by the church to handle all manner of unholy problems, are sent to discover what happened to King Taiyang. Along the way, they become wrapped up in a centuries spanning prophecy and a bloodline hanging in the balance.

14) High Bar, Low Blow - Yang owns a bar where the gimmick is that everyone’s an out of work actor and the staff is staging an ongoing drama on par with a soap opera to keep their customers coming back. Winter joins the staff and then things get a bit real.

15) Hoodlums and Hijinks - Robin Hood AU where Princess Winter and Princess Weiss are just as in favor for overthrowing the king as the group of bandits run by Ruby, Yang, and Blake.

16) Last One 2: Electric Boogaloo (title subject to change) - a sequel to Last One where the haunt continues.

17) Lexical Access - Sequel to Tip of the Tongue, where Yang gives her girlfriend a bit of roleplaying payback.

18) Little Red - Carmen Sandiego AU where Ruby was kidnapped adopted by a group of thieves and raised to become the world’s greatest thief, but a chance meeting with Penny via a stolen phone opens her eyes to the wider world, and she meets the rebellious heiress Weiss, street smart Blake, and brawler Yang, creating a team that works to foil Ruby’s former friends while eluding capture by mysterious operatives with a somewhat familiar white color scheme...

19) Long Term Investment - Yang, a fae who lives in the woods, makes a deal with Princess Winter to save the Queen. The price? Winter’s firstborn. Winter misunderstands how she’s expected to get pregnant and Yang’s never actually intended to collect. Next thing Yang knows, Winter’s moving into the clearing beside her tree home.

20) Miscalculation - Another Omegaverse AU where Weiss is an omega and Blake and Yang are alphas, except Weiss lied and said she was an alpha when enrolling in Beacon and now she’s locked in a room with Blake and Yang on the verge of starting her heat. Sharing is caring.

21) More Than Words Can Say - Winter, rendered mute by a military accident early in her career, is honestly the best girlfriend Yang’s ever had. However, tonight’s the night they’ve decided to get intimate, and that includes showing some scars that they don’t show often. It’s less about sex and more about trust and intimacy.

22) Music of the Night - Phantom of the Opera AU where the mysterious, disfigured shade of the opera house, Weiss, finds herself at odds with the rich, jovial Yang in a competition for Blake’s heart. Then there’s Adam being a dick, too, and the opera house has never seen so much drama.

23) My Heart Will Go On - It’s the Titanic, but double the rich, unwilling-to-marry ladies and triple the won-a-ticket-to-a-ship ruffians. Penny’s there too; she, like Ruby, just really likes ships.

24) One Fucking Favor - Winter’s due for a long assignment and wants to make a sex tape for stress relief purposes. Yang doesn’t ask questions; she’s just the one with the camera. But then, Winter’s partner for the vid doesn’t show up. What’s Yang going to do about it?

25) Prophecy - Star Wars AU where Ruby, Yang, and Blake are trained as Jedi, Winter and Weiss are part of the clone army, and Ruby’s the chosen one. That’s a lot of pressure to put on someone, but Senator Salem is there to lend a helping hand...

26) Propositioned - Faunus experience bouts of heat; sometimes, they can safely ignore it and go about their lives, but every now and again, they really can’t. Concerned for Blake’s health as she’s skipped too many heats to be healthy, Yang sets up a partner for Blake’s heat. Blake’s not a fan but she does like the idea of banging Weiss Schnee.

27) Proven - ARK: Survival Evolved AU where Winter, after being ‘won’ by Yang, is taken into the bowels of the earth to learn how the underground tribes who inhabit the area survive in such an unforgiving environment. As she acclimates to the tribe’s ways, she finds herself carving out her own path, culminating in facing off against the Queen and proving herself worthy.

28) Reaping What You Sow - When Winter escaped to the countryside with Penny to start a farm, she knew she had her work cut out for her. In need of help and facing a harsh cold season, she hires Yang, a one armed drifter, to help her. The two end up needing the other more than they could’ve imagined.

29) Tear My Heart Open - Blake thought she understood how the world worked. As a member of the White Fang Gang, all she needed to do was keep everyone motivated to continue their ongoing street war against the police and authorities bent on keeping them down. But while running from the cops, she’s offered sanctuary in the home of one Weiss Schnee and her girlfriend, Yang. From there, her perception of the world is completely upended.

30) The Duel - After her father offered her hand in marriage to the winner of a tournament, Winter opted to assume a disguise and fight for the prize herself. In the final match, she faces Yang Xiao Long, a competitor she’s come to know quite well, and she finds her conviction to win wavering slightly. Is it enough to lose her the fight?

31) The Lies We Tell Ourselves - Weiss has made it; she’s opened her tattoo shop in Vale, well away from her father, and aside from a bad first impression with the florists across the parking lot, everything’s looking up for her- until her father finds her. Luckily, Blake’s been through some shit and doesn’t mind helping Weiss drive daddy dearest up the wall, even if it means letting her own parents think she’s dating Weiss. It’s not like either of them is going to catch feelings... unless...

32) The Princess’ Bride - After losing her fiancée to the dreaded White Fang Pirates, Yang vows to take to the sea herself and exact her revenge. Princess Weiss finds herself falling madly in love with Yang, who still loves Blake, and all this is thrown into even more chaos when Yang gets kidnapped and Blake comes back from the dead!

33) Two for One - Yes, another Omegaverse AU. Five years after the fall of Beacon, Yang and Blake cross paths, each believing the other has spent the time keeping their mutual mate, Weiss, safe. When they realize Weiss is with neither of them, old wounds are torn open, but before they can resolve their dispute, Winter captures the both of them and hauls them to a remote part of Atlas where an SDC facility has been turned into a fortress. There, they find a mortally wounded Weiss clinging to life and raising twins daughters; she gives her mates until her death to endear themselves to their children, else the twins might opt to stay with Winter and be kept from Blake and Yang for good. Between learning about their kids, Blake and Yang navigate their complicated feelings and try to reconnect with Weiss, all while a sinister force gathers to destroy the fortress and steal the prize within.

34) Weaknesses - Loosely set in the Glamour AU, Yang is being forced to assume her mother’s position as leader of their vampire coven. Her fellow vamps disapprove of Yang’s werewolf girlfriend. Winter, of course, doesn’t care.

I got lazy and cut a bunch out. No, fuck you, I don’t have too many AUs, I will add more if I want. Also, some of these, the first chapter is posted on my Patreon. Don’t ask me which ones; I genuinely have no idea. I’m bad at this, y’all.

me: *Okay so imagine an animatic with Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. It starts of with a montage of Le Chevre shooting, torturing and stealing from people. This is before he joins vile.The montage ends with Le Chevre shooting a guy in the head who was tied to a chair in a basement. When “Mama, just killed a man.” starts playing, his mother walks in that room, she starts crying and breaks down. He realizes that his secret is out now and that he can’t stay there anymore. He hugs his still crying mom, tells her he loves her and storms out of the house as his mom reaches for her phone.

When “Mama, ooh, didn’t mean to make you cry.” starts playing, we see Le Chevre speeding through the streets on a motorcycle. When “If I’m not back again this time tomorrow.” starts playing, we cut to a dark street, Le Chevre is leaving a voicemail on a public phone to his mother.

When “Too late, my time has come.” starts playing we see Le Chevre in a different country. He’s sitting in an alleyway, in front of him are wallets that he stole for money.

When “Goodbye, everybody, I’ve got to go.” starts playing we see two shadows looming over Le Chevre. He looks up, and we see it’s the cleaners. They hand him a phone, he gets a facetime from a number under the name VILE faculty. They ask him to come to their school for thieves and tell him the streets are no place, for such a young and skilled thief. He agrees and the cleaners take him to VILE.

When “Mama, ooh (any way the wind blows).” starts playing we see Le Chevre arriving to the island and walking around.

During the guitar solo after “Sometimes I wish I’d never been born at all.” we see a montage of Le Chevre in class, making friends (Crackle, Black Sheep, Tigress, Mime Bomb and El Topo), and falling in love(with El Topo of course)

When the piano starts playing we see Le Chevre and El Topo going on multiple missions together. Then when “Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening.” starts playing we see Carmen Sandiego show up out of nowhere and ruin their mission.

During “I’m just a poor boy nobody loves me.” we see Le Chevre muttering to himself and putting himself down for leaving his mother. And when “He’s just a poor boy from a poor family.” starts playing, we see his friends slinging their arms around him and successfully a cheering him up.

When we hear “Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?” we see Professor Bellum walking in in El Topo and Le Chevre kissing, they beg her to not mind wipe and fire them. She says she won’t tell anyone if they do one mission for her, off the charts.

When the beet drops after “Beelzebub has the devil put aside for me.” we see Le Chevre kicking someone to the ground. When the lyrics start he bends down to belittle the person he just kicked.

During the guitar solo after that we see Le Chevre and El Topo arriving back at VILE and telling Professor Bellum that the mission was a success.

When the vocals start again we see a montage of Le Chevre and El Topo together, sitting together during lunch, laughing during a meeting and hanging out in their dorm room.

When “Noting really matters, anyone can see.” starts, we see Le Chevre and El Topo cuddling on a bed in a hotel room where they’re staying for a mission. Le Chevre is softly talking to El Topo.

The screen slowly fades to black.

also me: Okay! now let’s actually do it

Once again me: *remembers she has no drawing skills whatsoever*

This morning while my mom was driving me to my tutor, I heard this song on the radio and I immediately started thinking of an animatic with this song, about Le Chevre’s backstory and relationship with El Topo. This took me EXTREMELY long to write down, sorry if it’s badly written. I did my best tho.

CS Season 3 Thoughts...

Okay, overall?? Kinda disappointed, like a lot of people. Only five episodes, its been covered. Its disappointing. But lets go over them, shall we...

The Luchadora Tango Caper

Overall thoughts? Well, this season seems so....separated? Kind of out of character and disconnected. I’ll go over why at the end.

Haha, do the Cleaners do everything?? They can cook, rig explosives, kidnap people, play bagpipes, fly a helicopter...is technology really their weakness? Oops. That’s not for another few episodes.

Poor Cleo. She seems rather out of character in this season too. All she wants is to be warm. Throughout, she seems so...almost inexperienced? Where’s the sharp-tongued, sarcastic, delicate in taste and style Cleo we know? She’s there in places.....just...

They faked us out. I thought we were going to see Carmen tangoing. Also, is it just me, or is there a lot of...leg wrapping...this season..?

Ah yes, thank you, musical cues, I was worried Shadow-san had torn Carmen to pieces since Season 3. That’s her triumph score; maybe its like a “welcome back to cs” or something. Honestly, the whole “she’s been missing all summer” seems weird and unexplained, and unnecessary.

Does Veracruz exist? Yes, it does, how did that fly under our radars?

“I have his eyes” tore me to bits. Oh my gosh what a line. She’s seeing her father for the first time.

Thank you for showing us the 10 passports and giving us some pictures, we will never hear anything about Dexter or Vera after this episode again

She was an adorable baby and Carmen acknowledging this is hilarious

“Who may I have the pleasure of declining?” is another really funny line to me

This fight between Carmen and Spinkick has no suspense and its really a bad one to be honest, but holy crap Spinkick can dent stone lol

It makes a lot of sense that Catching Carmen Sandiego 101 is a class now, lol. I really want to see it. That- those fights were horrible by the way. Does Shadowsan know how to use the bolas? Because we know Carmen sure can’t.

Coach sure does like making messes and ruining tables

Ivy is so supportive this season and I am here for it. Kinda unlike Zack who is just “Hi, I hate fish and I misunderstand names” guy.

Yeah Maelstrom, what the hell did you let her walk for? Brunt easily captured her and you want to enforce sketchy psychological doubts in her mind? What?

Don’t show your face, Maelstrom says to Brunt. You know. After kidnapping a law enforcer with apparently perfect face memory recall who now has your face plastered all over wanted posters. Oh, and that Lutedor you knocked out didn’t see your face either

There is so much indirect calling Carmen good looking this season? What? I mean she is but it is so weird

Zack saying juicy steaks is so so uncomfortable

Carmen is so disengaged this season???? *Finds a link to her mother and pictures of her father* oh its another *sad sigh* link to my past. *Wow, you look like your mother, and I knew her, and her name!* Oh. Can you tell me about her.. Family is Carmen’s main trigger and source of steam in s1 and, mostly, s2. Now we get actual parts about it and she seems like she doesn’t care.

HAHA! Julia even gets her own little entrance with music and “camera” angles. And she is SO dismissively sassy sometimes in this season, I love what little we do get of her. I mean it is REALLY out of character, she hardly ever gets sassy/angry. But everyone is out of character so what the hell might as well enjoy it

“We have a fresh Carmen sighting!” Devineaux: “Haha!” Julia: *sigggggghhh* Julia girl, whats up? Please don’t leave forever. I know you said your head was in the game but your heart wasn’t, but? What? Why? Your heart seems to have been in it in season 2! Did you have a really bad summer??

Player has a space alien and a sock on his dresser and why am I not surprised

Okay, Carmen, because sitting down against a door you’re waiting to open (and you have waited for three seconds) is a great thing to do

Hahhaha Player. “I’m sorry, did you not attend a school for thieves?” Carmen is so sad though “Hey, just broke into your house, I’m your long lost daughter” and she should be sadder about the long lost daughter thing!??! It is so out of character!?!?

And so, Uncatchable Master Super Thief Carmen Sandiego breaks into an unknown house without checking it for people or weapons, after waiting three seconds to be let in. What? What?

The casual use of “mommy” and “daddy” is so, so very strange and I hate it a lot

*Snort* Zack and Ivy are doing their best but it is sot hard to see how they got caught by VILE in TSONTS

jgkjjdf Ivy just slings Zack to the floor and he can not move her an inch

I love Lupe a lot and I hope she returns

Carmen is more wholesome in this season too, it seems, probably because of this whole disengaged character shift but its cute

How is it that Zack and Ivy haven’t been arrested or killed yet, they have been seen so many times with her

Phan Cam: First Day, First Year

REMINDER: Keep in mind that this takes place in a fictional version of the world where things are a little different, but some real-world problems do happen here. So please forgive us if this brings up any hurtful subjects.

NOTE OR WARNING: Tokyo University is very strange to the other admin who is an American and doesn’t understand it. Like there being more than one campus in the city or which teaches what. So we’re just going to make it up as we go. But you can give him more clear and simple information on our sister site. Also, this post may get a bit long.

>The University of Tokyo, Komaba Campus. Our first day of college at last. Partly because of the coronavirus, they started the year late.

Everyone, we have arrived.

>The woman in the blue coat and red hat came closer and closer down with her umbrella until she finally landed and closes it.

Woman with English Accent: (no picture at her request) You really should remember which side of the road they drive in Japan, Keitaro, you nearly ran over these students who are just hear for their first day. Mr. Amamiya, Mr. Sakamoto, Ms. Takamaki, Mr. Kitagawa, Ms. Nijima, Ms. Okumura, Detective Akechi, you need to be more aware of your surroundings despite standing in awe, you were lucky you heard the van coming otherwise you would have to spent the first day of the new year in the hospital which is already full at the moment. And Mr. Sakamoto, you really need to watch your mouth, there might be children nearby who may hear you.

Mary Poppins: I can assure you that I have been thoroughly check. I am not carrying the coronavirus. However, the English Literature teacher, Mr. Dokusha, tested positive. Fortunately, it was a minor case and is expected to recover very soon. But in the meantime, I shall be substituting for him. But I am still first and foremost a nanny, so I’m only available certain days while also looking after children.

Queen: I see. But they does not explain why these two are here.

Ryu: You know which child she’s nannying? Kuri. I know Hase will be taking online classes this year, but with Inaba doing deliveries, he needs a little more help then the other tenants can offer.

Wolf: And I’m here to make sure things will be fine with Ms. Mary Poppins since she is English and the state of emergency has cautioned international travel.

Mary Poppins: I am very glad you are here for that. Thank you.

Wolf: You’re welcome.

Mary Poppins: Now, inside. The Dean is about to speak and we shouldn’t stand outside for too long. Spit Spot.

Crow: I have heard her name a few time back at the apartment. I was told she stayed there a couple of times. I guess she just arrived to day...

Panther: I wonder what kind of teacher she’ll be like.

Fox: Me and Ren will find out soon enough, we have her first.

Skull: Wish we could join ya, but I’ve got my own class. (sad) Why’d it hafta be Math?

Panther: I have Acting Class.

Noir: I need to get to Agricultural Studies.

Queen: History of Law is up for me and Akechi.

Crow: Right, so we’ll see each other at lunch.

>We agree and go our separate ways.

>Fox and I arrive at our classroom. Not many student were there, but there were cameras and monitors for students studying from home. Me and Fox sit together (probably the only ones who are). Then, Mary Poppins comes.

Mary Poppins: Welcome, class. As the Dean had already announced, I will be teaching this class for a time. Now, for the book we will be starting with is one of my favorites: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes has appeared a number of times in Sir Doyle’s works. There is even a museum dedicated to him on the real life 221B Baker Street in London, England. Of course, there have been a few times when when Holmes went on many cases and adventures with characters from other works. Such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the dual-personality doctor of Robert Louis Stevenson, Count Dracula of Bram Stoker, and even, though it only in a video game... a famous thief. Does anyone here know who that thief is?

>I have a feeling she’s looking at me.

Mary Poppins: How about you, Mr. Amamiya? Do you know the famous thief of another work who went against Holmes?

Mary Poppins: Anyway, yes, Arsene Lupin, who was created by Maurice Leblanc, once went up against Sherlock Holmes. As for the rest of you, if you thought for a moment that it was James Moriarty, that is the wrong answer. Moriarty was also created by Sir Doyle as the nemesis of Holmes.

Male Masked Student: No way. He got it right.

Female Masked Student: It actually quite smart to know something like that. Maybe I should get his number.

Female Masked Student: (surprised) Really? The two of you are together?

Mary Poppins: If we can get back on subject. Now, I wish you all to write a short report about what you think of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. You have until the end of class. Don’t worry, those studying from home, we have a printer and you can email it to there. I will collect it from there.

>We spent the remainder of the class writing down our thought about Sherlock Holmes.

>The bell rang and it was time for our next class.

Fox: I’m afraid this is where we must part. I have Art Class next.

Joker: Archaeology for me.

Yugi Muto: It’s my first year here at Tokyo U. I know I said I would work at my grandpa’s game store and create games of my own, but I thought I’d still go to college to improve those skills. And you... I know you. You’re friends with Ryuji Sakamoto of KUROFUNE. I saw you perform at the talent part of Dream FES.

Joker: Yes. Ren Amamiya, at your service, Yugi san.

Yugi Muto: You know, you can just call me Yugi.

>We both head inside. Just like in the last class, there were more or less people here while cameras and monitors helping us connect to students from their homes. Keitaro Urashima comes in.

Keitaro Urashima: Hey, everyone. I’m Keitaro Urashima. But, you can call me Keitaro if it makes you feel comfortable. Welcome to Archaeology. Here, we will learn about the ancient world. Now, according to Seta’s notes, we’re to start with the basics of the basics. First off, a short history of archaeology. Archaeology was first introduced in the 16th century Europe. They say that it first began when Nabonidus, the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, became interested in the past so he could align himself with past glories. However, an early investigation of the past could be traced back to Ancient Greece... You, the one with the glasses next to the odd-hair young man.

Keitaro: Do you know the name of the Ancient Greek historian who had an interest in investigating the past?

Keitaro: That’s right! You must have a real interest in this stuff, Amamiya kun. The Greek historian and scholar, Herodotus, was the first historian to collect his material systematically, test their accuracy, arranged them in a well-constructed narrative. Plato and his disciple, Socrates, were philosophers and Homer was an author who wrote the Odyssey. Herodotus was known as the “Father of History”.

Keitaro: Alright, alright, settle down now. By the way, Amamiya kun, who you all recognize from Dream FES’s Talent Show, isn’t the only celebrity here. We also have Hifumi Togo the Shogi champion, Yugi Muto the King of Games, and Rei Ryugazaki the top track runner and swimmer.

Rei Ryugazaki: I mostly do swimming these days.

>Did he really have to bring that up? Hifumi looks at me with contempt.

Yugi: Are you okay?

I’d rather not say.

Keitaro: Now, we will begin discussing about the earliest known archaeological digs.

>We spent the rest of the class learning about some of the early digs in archaeology.

>Beef Bowl Shop Ore no Beko. Normally, we would have lunch at our favorite diner, but they have closed due to it being too small to avoid infection and have switched to deliveries. This place, luckily, is still open, through they close early. Me, Fox, Skull, and Panther were discussing the classes we had. Skull was just in Math and Poetry and Panther had Acting and Science. Two others then come in. It was Yugi, Rei Ryugazaki, and a young man with thick blonde hair and an almost menacing face. I can only guess this is Katsuya Jonouchi... But for popular reasons and to make things more easier, we’ll call him by his western name: Joey Wheeler.

Yugi: Oh, Ren!

Joker: Hi, Yugi.

Panther: (confused) You know Yugi Muto and Rei Ryugazaki?

Yugi: We’re in Archaeology together.

Holy shit, you’ve even got Joey Wheeler here!

Ya seem surprised. Glad to meet a fan of mine.

Skull: Well, I mostly like Tea Gardner (Anzu Mazaki) since we’re both performers, but yer cool, Joey san.

Skull and Joey Wheeler: Ya better think twice before ya mess wit Joey Wheeler, da Godfada of Game!

Rei Ryugazaki: (irritated by that stunt) We thought we’d stop for lunch some. I guess you had the same idea.

Fox: We would normally go to the diner across the street, but due to the state of emergency, they can only deliver until they’re sure it is safe to reopen.

Skull: My mom said that they’ll reopen as soon as they make sure it’s safe. It’s always been one of our favorite hangouts.

Panther: I hope so. By the way, Ryuji, you’re mom’s a nurse, right? How are things with her?

Skull: Well, because of her job, she said I can’t stay in the apartment with her in case I get sick. Well, I was already movin’ out after graduation. I currently stayin’ with Akechi at his place ‘til I can find one of my own.

Rei Ryugazaki: Speaking of which, if you’re friends with the Detective Prince, isn’t he here?

Panther: He and our other friends have classes at the Hongo Campus. They’re having lunch elsewhere. But we’re suppose to meet up with them and our other friends from Shujin after classes.

Yugi: That’s good. I wish we could meet up with the others, too. But, they have their own paths to follow and we have to keep our distance.

>We all sat down and enjoyed our lunch.

Panther: That reminds me, if you’re here Rei san, does that mean the other members of your swim club is here?

REMINDER 2: We don’t know the exact timelines of most of the shows, cartoon, movies, video games, and anime. We’re just making it up as we go.

Rei: No. They are attending different colleges. I’m the only one who came to Tokyo University. Haru senpai’s at Hidaka University. Mako senpai’s at Meijo Chuo University here in Tokyo, I was hoping to visit him, but I can’t due to the lock down. Nagisa’s taking online courses because of the lock down as well. So is Gou.

Joker: Just have hope, Rei kun. You’ll see them again. I’m sure of it.

Rei: ... (smiling) You might be right. Thank you, Ren san.

Just promise the next time you guys so swimming, you’ll invite us.

>After we finished our lunch, we returned to the campus. My next class was Music with Skull. After that, my last class was Geography with Panther and Hifumi. Normally, college hours would last longer, but because of the state of emergency, classes end early each day

>Cafe Leblanc. Boss closed it early for us. We, including Wolf, talked about what happened today.

Sound like you guys had quite the day today. I can’t believe you actually eat lunch with the King of Games himself. I used to love to play Duel Monsters.

Same here. Me and Kasumi used to play together between recitals. Hey, Senpai, did you play Duel Monsters in the past?

Joker: I did. But I lost interest as I go older. But I might get back into it someday.

Queen: So, how was your day?

Oracle: Same as usual. Ms. Chouno was being saucy, Mr. Hiruta trying too hard to be charming... Mr. Ushimaru threw a piece of chalk at a student.

Makoto: Thanks for taking care of that Iron Man Wannabe. Even Tony doesn’t like him. He says he gives billionaire geniuses like him a bad rep.

Skull: Tell Stark you’re welcome. I just wish you guys coulda been there.

Bruno: We will.

Joker: So, you managed to dodge Mr. Ushimaru’s chalk? He used to do the same with me.

Adi: I did. I guess all that training I did with Hawkeye really paid off.

Bruno: I was there. I saw it. Me and Adi are in the same class.

Makoto: (disappointed) I wish I could have seen it. How could I end up a first year?

Bruno: Because you’re biologically 15 and 15-year-olds start in first year in Japan.

Personally, you still act like a kid.

Makoto: (irritated) What was that?

Queen: That reminds me, is Chloe also a student at Shujin.

Bruno: No, she’s chose to study at home. She was originally going to go to Coles Academic High School with Kamala, but due to COVID-19, they had to change their plans.

Panther: Yeah, she told me just before we left Eternia.

Wolf: I wish I could have gone. Maybe next time.

Adi: We can only hope this pandemic ends. At school, the place was almost empty.

Bruno: I know. I was worried when I saw this. I know I won’t be infected since I’m half machine, but Adi and Makoto aren’t.

Violet: Same here. I learned they canceled gymnastics today because one of the students tested positive.

Queen: I’m sorry to hear that.

Violet: It’s okay, he just has a minor case and is expected to recover in a couple of weeks.

Noir: That’s good to hear.

Joker: How’s Chloe, by the way? Knowing that she can’t go with Kamala, she must be very unhappy.

Makoto: Yeah, she’s pretty bummed out.

Adi: Unless Mr. and Mrs. Khan say it’s alright, they can only see each other on video chat.

When you left, Zen and Rei went to a new existence and your memories of your time together was gone. However, we in the Velvet Room remembered because it was recorded in the Compendium. And it appears the time has come to restore those memories.

Yu: You can do that?

Margaret: I cannot... But she can.

Naminė: I’m glad you know who I am, Ren Amamiya. I’m here to restore the memories that were lost. I know my powers are normally limited to those who are connected to Sora, but thanks to everyone in the Velvet Room, I can do it with everyone as well. And it will only take a second. It sort of makes me wish I had this kind of assistance sooner.

>Naminė closes her eyes. In a flash, many things cam flowing into my head. None of it involved this Zen or Rei... But something else.

Yu: I... I remember! We met Zen and Rei in a different version of Yasogami. Rei was dead and Zen was suppose to take her to the afterlife. They got trapped and we helped them.

Aigis: I remember as well.

Naminė: Your friends have remembered as well. You might need their help.

Joker: I remember something. It’s not about your friends...

Aigis: I also remember that.

Yu: Me, too... But I think we should save that for another time. Right now, it sounds like Zen san and Rei chan are in trouble again. What happened to them?

Margaret: After our adventure with them, they went to a part of the Sea of Souls known as the Soul Society... But the rest you will have to hear from Rei.

Lavenza: It is time you return to your world and enjoy whatever rest you have.

Aigis: (smiling) I do not have to worry. As a machine, I do not require sleep. But, I should return and tell the Mitsuru san what has happened.

Maraget: And one more thing I must tell you. Naminė has restored all of your friends’ memories. This is because you may need their assistance. However, to avoid the place you are going to from also being effected by the changes bought on by the virus that now covers your world, you can only take one member of your team with you.

The Role of the Gentleman or Lady Thief and their Detective/Cop/Agent Part 1

With Carmen Sandiego 2019 starting to heat up I figured that it would be a good time to explain why characters like Chase, Julia, and formerly Ivy and Zack were important to the over all story and why these dynamics are key in telling the story of the idea of Cops and Robbers.

To start with we have to go all the way back to the days of the Highway men and the likes of Robin Hood.

So let’s start with that. The myths around Robin Hood have grown over the years, most of which had the elements in there of him being a free spirited outlaw that was in Nottingham and being the enemy of the Sheriff came from earlier poems such as the Robin Hood and the Monk show that while he’s got some good in him, he’s not friends with the King, and that his robbing maybe more selfish, and the actions of the Merry Men are more in line with that of a thriller than the more epic adventure that we see later.

Robin’s stories changed over time from darker stories with thriller like plots, to comedic at times, and over time grew to show Robin changing from a character that simply robbed because of the fun of it, to someone who was robbing for the people, and that he could be outwitted by others and then they are invited to join with him.

Robin representing the lawful outlaw, the thief that while forceful to those that don’t fit into his moral code, can be gallant and kind to those that he finds right and just. He’s a Chaotic good type character in this case, leading into the Sheriff who falls under the idea of the dull witted idiot at times who get’s tricked and had by the clever robber. Over time Robin became a noble over a commoner, where as the Sheriff was always seen as part of the rich nobles that caused issue for the lower classes.

Thus a lot of the idea of the noble thief and the arrogant detective came into being. Though this dynamic wouldn’t stick around for long with these two as the Sheriff became more and more of a villain and Robin more of a heroic person who was only robbing to return the wealth to those that needed it.

Stories about Robin and his ways of stealing, namely their ballads, over time, influenced later writers who wrote about the exploits of real Highwaymen:

Later robber heroes included the Cavalier highwayman James Hind, the French-born gentleman highwayman Claude Du Vall, John Nevison, Dick Turpin, Sixteen String Jack, William Plunkett and his partner the "Gentleman Highwayman" James MacLaine, the Slovak Juraj Jánošík, and Indians including Kayamkulam Kochunni, Veerappan and Phoolan Devi.

These robbers were seen as heroic due to their bold actions robbing people face to face. A lot of the actions of later Gentle thieves can be attributed to the legends of these Highwaymens’ characters.

James Hind -Was a royalist who apparently helped other Royalist escape from troubles, gave money to poor royalists and also refused to rob cavaliers. A lot of his exploits were embellished, painting him as a Royalist Robin Hood.

Claude Du Vall - According to popular legend, he abhorred violence, showing courtesy to his victims and chivalry to their womenfolk, thus spawning the myth of the romantic highwayman. -from Wikipedia. Du Vall is most known for inspiring a lot of the legends around the “Romantic Highwayman” legends.

John Nevison - with the nickname Swift Nick, due to a dash of 200 miles from Kent to York to create an alibi after a robbery, Nevison was known for never using violence against his victims, always polite, and only robbing the rich.

Dick Turpin - was nothing like his legend, and was over time turned into an almost robin hood like figure. The reason that his name is used so much and linked with the other gentlemen Highwaymen is due to the book Rookwood, where he’s used as part of the plot and comes off as far more lively than the mains.

Sixteen String Jack - was known for his colorful costumes, wit and charm and typically robbed so he could afford said expensive clothing.

William Plunkett -wore a venetian mask and tended to be polite to women and only stole because he “was obliged to do so” not out of wontoness. He actually escaped with his life.

John MacLaine -a former son of clergy who became a grocer and, after his wife died three years after their marriage, went bankrupt and became the partner of William Plunkett. He, like Will, was seen a courteous and restrained when they were holding people up.

Juraj Jánošík -the Slovakian Robin Hood, who’s stories became more legend and was later used as a symbol against oppression. After helping another robber escape from jail, the two started a band, which Juraj became leader of at the age of 23, when the former leader left to settle down outside of the kingdom of Hungary. “ Most of their victims were rich merchants. Under Jánošík's leadership, the group was exceptionally chivalrous: They did not kill any of the robbed victims and even helped an accidentally injured priest.[5] They are also said to share their loot with the poor and this part of the legend may be based on the facts too.[5] -Wikipedia”

Kayamkulam Kochunni -is India’s Robin Hood. Like Juraj, Kayamkulam has become a legend and a bit of a deity as well. He was said to have robbed from the rich to give to the poor, focusing mostly on merchants that were wealthy. What’s interesting is that he’s one of the first to be well known and have a detective that is following him around, by the name of “ Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker” who was a known warrior and defender of the oppressed, and who supposedly captured Kayamkulam, leading to him being placed in jail for a year where he died.

Veerappan -a more modern day version of Robin Hood in India, who was active in the late 1960s and into the early 2000s. Unlike the other members of this, he was not known for giving back to the poor, rather his status comes from the fact that he was elusive.

Phoolan Devi -a lady bandit who’s last name was used as a title for her. Her history in India was well known, and she later was released from jail after she and her gang were arrested for the massacre of a rival gang that had captured and raped her. However publically she was somewhat praised for her actions. She later was elected to the Indian parliament but was assassinated in 2001 by a former member of the gang that she had killed.

Other Highwaymen tended to do so for revolution or rebellion based actions, such as those in Ireland during the 17th to the 19th Century.

In 17th- through early-19th-century Ireland, acts of robbery were often part of a tradition of popular resistance to British colonial rule and settlement and Protestant domination. From the mid-17th century, bandits who harassed the British were known as tories (from Irish tóraiḋe, raider; tóraí in modern spelling). Later in the century, they became known as rapparees. Famous highwaymen included James Freney, Count Redmond O'Hanlon, Willy Brennan, and Jeremiah Grant.[10][11]

James Freney - originally lost his family lands in 1650, after being a well off family that was considered a noble. As a young man he wound up working as a servant to another well off family, married, and had a family. He joined with a gang after the towns fees caused him to close up his pub. Like a number of other Highwaymen he was known for being polite for the most part, and saw his actions as a way to get back at the English.

Count Redmond O’Hanlon - his family at one time was a favor of Queen Elizabeth the first, however due to them siding with the Catholics during the events of the Irish Rebellion, his family got their lands seized during the Act for Settlement, where in they lost all their status and lands to England and it was given away to other land holders. Redmond was known for being an excellent actor, mimic and persuasive speaker who used these skills. Again he’s seen as a bit of a Robin Hood figure.

Using this as a base we can see how these men and women of reality became a sort of base for fictional characters, who later became part of the genre of the Gentlemen thief. Furthering the evolution of these characters was the idea of the opposition of the thief in the form of the rival police officer, typically either a detective/cop/Agent of Interpol who has been sent out to stop the likes of the Heroic thief.

Subsequently, a change happened between the time of the Sheriff from Robin Hood to the time of someone like Zenigata, from Lupin the third. The first changes could be seen in the idea of making the opposite of the thief be someone that has a more personal reason to want to capture the thief, or have a more sympathic reason behind their being the rival to the thief.

Another aspect added to this was that, in some cases the detective had it wrong about the thief and their heroic actions were being read wrong by the law. Best example of this early on was is the character of Javert from Victor Hugo’s Les Mis. written back in the 1860s.

Javert’s story focuses a lot on how he wants to capture Jean because Jean ran from his parole, and Javert feels like he must catch him, even after years of the man reforming his life. One of the aspects about this that draws into the modern day Phantom Thief idea, is that of the character that at all costs, MUST, capture the thief. Javert devotes his life to it, dealing with the fact that he grew up inside a prison and can’t for the life of him deal with the idea that a criminal can change. This leads to his death, and the obsession of capturing Valjean.

The idea of the obsessive detective focusing their life on the chase digs into later day characters that are like Javert, but less suicidal.

The famous Scarlet Pimpernel deals with one such character. While the Pimpernel is no thief in the normal sense, he seeks to “steal” the lives of innocent nobles from the gallows during the french revolution.

Created by Baroness Emma Orczy, Sir. Percy Blake is our lead (and shares with Carmen the love of Red) who through out the story plays up his foppish image to cover for the fact that he is the head of a ring of men and women who are covertly, under the black sky of the night, going to France to break out and save various people from death during the French Revolution. Blake is in a lot of ways the first user of the secret identity. But he also has a lot of the qualifications of being a Gentlemen Thief, including not harming people unless they attack first, and being ever so delightful to those he’s “robbing.” He’s a skilled fencer, an excellent actor, a master of disguise, an intuitive improvising and imaginative planner, and a quick on his feet escape artist.

Counter to him runs Citizen Armand Chauvelin, a cunning and ruthless man that is for the most part fearless and doesn’t care for his own safety -save where he figures that death is the only outcome of a situation. He’s highly intelligent and, in the past, was a close friend of Percy’s wife. During the stories we see him become the rival or counter to Sir. Percy, figuring out that the man is the Pimpernel but never having a chance to catch him, as Percy always eludes him, causing their conflict to keep dancing around all through the series.

Being the opposite of Percy, Armand plays up the darker aspects of the Agent. He’s shown wearing dark clothing, that he tends to brood more, and certainly while having some sense of mercy and sympathy, he feels that Percy should be stopped as he’s breaking the law in France. Much like Javert, Armand becomes slightly obsessed with capturing and outwitting Percy, but he never gets the chance to win.

This brings us to the idea of the inversion of the detective for the thief in the form of A.J. Raffles. Raffles was created by Sir. Arthur Conan-Doyle’s brother-in-law, E.W. Hornung, a poet and author. Raffles was created as a opposite to Holmes. Like Holmes there is a sharpness to his character’s look, though unlike Holmes, Raffles is far more of a social man and lives competing lives as a gentleman and a thief. It’s interesting to note that Doyle did not particularly like Raffles as he felt it was a slight to his character. Although of the two, Holmes has been used more frequently. Raffles also seems to share the whole “playing a role” to set up for his crime, but also feels that while he steals for himself, he tries to pick on people who can spare the theft.

This becomes important as later day thieves tended to play the part of hero and villain all in the same story in some cases.

The biggest and most well known though of all these Thieves and the most heavily inspired for western writers, is Arsene Lupin.

Pulling from Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail, Rocambole (an adventure hero that starts off as a thief like character and later became a heroic person), Arsene acts as a thief, stealing things that he deems worthy and always leaving some form of calling card to where he’s going to strike next. However he’s usually not the bad guy and the true villain of the story is far worse than he is. Lupin traditionally didn’t have a counter until his creator Maurice Leblanc decided to pit him against Sherlock Holmes (changed to Herlock Sholmes due to Doyle requesting it). This placed the two master minds against one another for several stories. Pairing them up in some cases to solve a crime or having Holmes go against Lupin to catch him and the other villain.

This pairing later lead to the creation of other characters that have bad guy like reputations but are really heroes, such as the Shadow, and Judex -from France (who probably inspired the Shadow).

One of the Key elements to come from these thieves is that there is always a code of honor, which seems to stem all the way back from the days of the Highwaymen. This code seems to be:

Be charming, well mannered, and courteous to your target and others.

Avoid the idea of physical or emotional force or violence to steal

No intimidation when stealing

Only fight to defend yourself

Some thieves are already wealthy, others will take for material gain, but a good majority of them will steal not for wealth of money but for knowledge or appreciation of the object. A good number of modern thieves tend to steal things already stolen and return them to their rightful home, or correcting a moral wrong. In most cases it’s only from a wealthy or corrupt person, and only stealing one rare thing or as a challenge, typically leaving some sort of message saying they were going to take it. And once in a while they will give it back, because it was a “for fun” thing.

With the rise of other Gentlemen thieves in the west such as: The Saint, Thomas Crown, Jimmy Dale, Filibus, Danny Ocean, and various characters from comics (Gentleman Ghost, Catwoman, Penguin, Gambit, Black Cat) and many others, it doesn’t surprise me that Arsene Lupin became influential to Japanese writers.

Kaito Kid, Dark Mousy, Lupin the Third, and Saint Tail, all have their own opposing rival detectives, and each seem to steal in some way for good (save for those that also take for themselves).

Looking at Arsene Lupin III you have a similarity to the original character. someone who is mostly stealing for fun, but also he’s “ Acknowledged across the globe as the world's number one thief, Lupin is a master of disguise and deduction, marksman, and inventor of numerous handy gadgets. His fun-loving, foolhardy incongruity covers a brilliant mind always extemporizing and re-evaluating. As such, he has been responsible for heists no right-minded individual would believe possible. While occasionally arrested and jailed, typically by his ICPO nemesis Inspector Koichi Zenigata, he always succeeds in escaping unharmed.”

Lupin’s personality over the years has changed as the various versions of the anime has over time cooled his harder edges and made him more of a chivalrous goofball, who can get away with things. In some cases he’s doing it for the thrill, but in several situations from the anime and movies he tends to do it because he wants to do the right thing, and maybe earn some side cash. In any event in the anime he’s not without his side kicks, and of course there’s Zenigata.

Monkey Punch, the creator of Lupin the Third said that Koichi Zenigata and Lupin have a Tom and Jerry aspect to them, and the only way the series will end is when they are equals. Either they both lose, they both win, or they both retire. Zenigata is more in line with the idea of the detective following a life long passion. He is, much like Armand and Javert, obsessed with capturing Lupin and has shown over various shows that he cares for the younger thief.

The origin of Zenigata's and Lupin's mutual regard was based early in the series when Lupin had the chance to shoot the Inspector, but instead wished him well and escaped. Since then, an unwritten understanding exists between the pair where neither will attempt to cause the death of the other. Further, the two are best referred as unacknowledged friends; several occasions have occurred where Lupin and gang aided Zenigata out of a life-threatening situation. When a woman the Inspector loved was killed by a criminal gang, Lupin participated in avenging her murder. And when an old enemy of Lupin's shot Zenigata point blank while he helplessly watched, a wild motorcycle chase began to apprehend the killer, partly for Lupin to conclude affairs with the adversary, partly to avenge the (supposed) death of the Inspector.

On the other end for the pairing you have the Kaito Kid and Detective Conan.

Now unlike Lupin who steals because it’s his way of life, Kaito Kid (aka Kaito Kuroba -yes that is his real name) does so to follow up on his family legacy and try to find the men that killed his father. The reason he steals isn’t for money or for fixing issues, no this is more of a personal thing. After taking the gemstones Kaito tests to see if they, under the moonlight, to see if the Pandora gem (a stone that has the ability to grant immortality) is inside for the express purpose of destroying it and keeping it from the hands of the organization that killed his dad. When he takes the stones, or any treasure he typically leaves a calling card, so the bad guys know what he’s going after so he can confront them, and later returns the items to their places.

Kaito doesn’t have an exact opposition, but normally if he is a bit of an antagonist in a story, that role goes to Detective Conan (aka Jimmy Kudo). Sometimes Conan is out to stop him from stealing something, but a number of times the two have teamed up as the organization that killed Kaito’s father was also connected to Jimmy becoming a small boy from a teenager. Kaito has played Jimmy from time to time, confusing friends and enemies for the young detective and also helping out when Lupin III showed up for his own heist in a movie. Jimmy though knows who Kaito is, yet he can’t pin any crimes on him.

The interesting thing about their conflict is that while Jimmy wants to stop him, he also knows that there’s more to Kaito’s actions than just being a thief, so unlike where Zenigata legitimately wants Lupin to reform, Jimmy knows that once Kaito finishes what he needs to do he’s likely going to stop being a thief, thus, while the chase is fun, unlike with Richard (the detective that Jimmy tends to knock out in order to explain the case) who sees Kaito as a thief, Jimmy knows that it will end and that in the end no one’s going to be hurt save the bad guys that killed Kaito’s father.

On the other side of things where in you have this idea of a pairing that has magic, you have Dark Mousey/ Daisuke Niwa and Krad/Satoshi Hiwatari.

Where as with Kaito who uses tricks to preform magic, Dark/Daisuke actually uses real magic to pretty much create a situation that has a lot of real magic in their thefts. See in the case of D.N.Angel, the story actually revolves around a curse. Dark is a being that may, or may not, have been a real person at some point in time. He is part of Daisuke, a middle-schooler who’s family has this curse placed upon them, where the first born son will inherent Dark and become a thief. The goal, to steal items that have a magical curse that was created by the Hikari family. Long story short if Dark and Daisuke fall for the same girl then Dark goes away from Daisuke and he waits till the next person or the curse is lifted (I can’t remember because last I read they were liking two different twin sisters, and keep switching who likes who.)

Opposing Daisuke is Satoshi Hiwatari, who is actually the adopted son of the Police Chief and the heir to Krad, Dark’s opposite. He has little control on Krad and is the descendant of the man who made the cursed items. Satoshi cares a lot for Daisuke seeing him as a friend and wanting him to stop using Dark, but the fact is that it’s not a possibility until the curse is broken for both. Both boy’s have their “specials” (I don’t know what they’re called) come out when they react to emotions. Daisuke is to feelings of love from a special girl that he likes, and Satoshi has it when Dark comes out and there’s a sense of challenge coming from Krad.

The thing that’s interesting with this cat and mouse game is that Daisuke and Sataoshi general want to be friends, with Satoshi being the cold character to Daisuke’s more warm and genuine personality. While Satoshi wants to stop Dark from stealing thing, Daisuke wants to find a way to release Dark and Satoshi from the curse that’s upon them because he knows Krad is hurting his friend. The point of the thefts though comes down not to robbing the rich, nor returning something for justice but for the sake of canceling out something dangerous in human hands. The idea that the art piece is cursed by an emotion and that the feelings of that piece need to be fixed, usually something to do with love and sadness and that sort of thing.

Similarly in the actual magical thief department we have the character of Meimi Haneoka aka Kaitō Saint Tail or just Saint Tail in English. Like another magical girl thief Phantom Thief Jeanne, there are aspects of the magic girl series here. However unlike PTJ, Saint Tail deals more with the actions of actually stealing art rather than cleansing it and making it vanish. The difference here is that unlike Jeanne, Meimi is just using stage magic, much like Kaito Kid, so her actions are done with her own wit and guile. What’s interesting is that unlike the other thieves mentioned, Saint Tail is a thief that takes back what has been stolen.

Meimi’s goal is helping those who have had things taken from them or ease their troubled hearts, as her friend who is a nun in training gets to hear these issues and goes to ask Saint Tail for help in taking back what was stolen. Meimi, like the others above, has a rival detective in the form of Daiki Asuka who is also a classmate of her’s whom she classes with as he’s obsessed with catching Saint Tail.

What’s interesting about this set up here is that unlike all the others, where it’s male vs. male, this is male vs. female and, because it is a shojo series, there’s a romantic undertone to this story. Daiki, for his part, does seem to have a bit of a crush on Saint Tail but ultimately wants to bring her to justice, and in Saint Tail form Meimi does flirt with him. However the conflict comes down to the idea of her and Daiki not seeing eye to eye in their civilian lives, as Meimi has a bit of a tsudare sort of mask so that others don’t know she’s Saint Tail. Thus the two butt heads a lot, as both are stubborn, and Meimi is constantly grappling with her own jealousy for her alter ego having Daiki’s heart.

It’s not that often that you see this set up with the Detective and the thief eventually ending up as a couple (Yes this is a spoiler) since in most cases the thief usually has a side love interest that has nothing to do with his or her crime career (either the person is doing an alter ego thing, or the love interest doesn’t pay mind to their crimes) or they are working with them on their criminal sprees.

This means that Daiki and Meimi are a bit of a rare pairing, the only other one that springs to mind is Batman and Catwoman (though that has it’s own issues) and Sly Cooper and Carmelita Fox from the Sly Cooper games. However their cat and mouse game mirrors a lot of other Detectives and thieves. For Daiki the idea of catching Saint Tail means that he can prove himself to his dad who could never catch the “Fallen Angel” thief, who happened to be Meimi’s mom, and he feels that if he can catch her than it makes up for his dad not getting Fallen Angel. It’s interesting too that, as with Kaito Kid, Dark Mousey and Lupin III, Saint Tail leaves calling cards but with different reasons. Where as with Kaito it’s to lure out the villains who killed his dad, and Dark as a PR thing for Satoshi, or Lupin just to annoy Zenigata, Tail’s game is so that Daiki and the cops can arrest the person that stole the object in the first place and get them proof so that they will go to jail for their crime.

It makes their relationship far more complex than your traditional thief and detective.

The thing is that the role these two play opposing one another is a game of cat and mouse that is designed to thrill the audience. Viewers watch, or readers read, as the characters have to outwit one another. The thief must always be one step ahead of the detective. But never too far ahead, and the detective must always be one step behind but know the truth even if they can’t prove it.

This leads to some interesting dynamics in regard to the idea of the thieves that don’t steal for their own goal. While it does, at times, make the detective question if they are doing right by chasing them, the thief needs to always reaffirm to the detective that they should try to catch them. The thrill is in the chase for the thief too, and in some cases it is not just the fun that is being had, but also the goal in allowing the detective to become a friend and in some ways a companion to the thief.

Without the detective doing the chasing the challenge isn’t there, and, on top of that in the case of a robin hood like thief where they want the police to capture a worse criminal, then they feel like they are actually doing some law abiding things as well. In other cases, they only agree to give up to that detective or rival, and will only become lawful again once their mission is completed, or they feel like the two are then equals.

Part of the game for the gentleman or Lady Thief is that they will show a great deal of compassion for those that they are taking from in some cases, and also feel the same for the detective. In a few cases, as with Lupin and Sherlock/Conan, there’s a sense of admiration and appreciation for each other’s skills and intelligence. Or in other cases as with Sly and Carmelita or Tail and Daiki, there is genuine love and affection there that leads to romance.

It’s the sense of almost flirting and a chance to change the other persons view of the world. In a lot of cases the detectives can see the good in a person, as with Zenigata regarding Lupin, but also they know that what they are doing in in the wrong according to the law, and they want that person who could be an amazing good guy and ally to them to join them on the lawful side of things, rather than the chaotic good side.

So how does this all fit into Carmen and the others? Well this has gone on too long I think, so I’m gonna do that as a part 2.
