The Career Girl Murders

The 'Career Girl Murders' was the name given by the media to the murders of Emily Hoffert and Janice Wylie in their Manhattan apartment on 28th August 1963.

Emily Hoffert was a 23-year-old school teacher. Janice Wylie was a 21-year-old Newsweek researcher. The girls lived with their roommate Patricia Tolles in New York. They were referred to as career girls as they were thought to be representative of thousands of young women who came to New York from other American cities to seek careers.

On 28th August 1963, Patricia Tolles returned to her apartment to find it has been ransacked and was covered in blood, the bodies of her two roommates Emily and Janice were in one of the bedrooms. Both girls had been stabbed over 60 times with knives taken from the kitchen and Janice, who was wearing just a towel, had been sexually assaulted.

The authorities suggested one or both of the girls had known their killer, the high level of violence seemed personal and there were no signs of forced entry. Although the apartment was messy no belongings had been stolen. Both victims had been bound and then tied back to back with each other.

George Whitmore Jr, a labourer living in New York, was named a suspect. It was reported that he had confessed but he later retracted his confessions claiming he had been forced and beaten to extract the confession. Whitmore was wrongfully incarcerated for 1216 days. He was found innocent and later successfully sued for false arrest.

In 1964 Nathan Delaney, a 35-year-old drug dealer, was arrested for the murder of a rival drug dealer, he offered a deal: in return for a more lenient sentence, he would give police the name of the real 'career girls' murderer. Delaney named Richard 'Ricky' Robles who he claimed had confessed to the killings. Delaney and his wife were wired with listening devices and over time Robles talked about details of the murders, convincing police he was responsible.

In 1965, Robles was tried and found guilty of the murders. He admitted he had broken into the apartment to steal money for drugs. When Wylie, who had been taking a shower, appeared he attacked and raped her. Hoffert came to see what the commotion was so he attacked and bound her too. Allegedly one of the girls had told him she would remember his face and report him to the police so he murdered both girls to stop them from reporting his crimes.

What it’s like to go from ambitious, self confident Career Girl to well.... Anxious.

So you know the score, you’re skipping along merrily to the beat of your own drum until one day something hits you. And that something, no matter how strong you THINK you are will turn your world upside down.

You guessed it... I’m talking about Anxiety.

The Anxious mind, the worry of what people think, the panic attack that hits you like a 30 ton lorry. That kind of Anxiety.

But what about when you go from right up there in your career, right up where you’re untouchable or (so you think) how do you deal with it when you’re suddenly the, well, Anxious mess that needs constant reassurance and can’t get through the day without a panic attack?

About a year ago, I lost someone, someone really super close to me. I had my first panic attack that night when I was alone. Terrified, I thought I was dying, like no joke literally dying... sound familiar?

I called my boyfriend in a panic and from there, every single thing I did was tough. Want to meet friends, panic attack. Speaking with someone and for no reason, panic attack.

Who the fuck was this person and what the hell was happening to my self esteem.

My personal journey through anxiety has been a mixture of wanting to tear my hair out, crying uncontrollably in the bath tub and trying to figure how the hell to get out of this hole.

I’ll tell you I’m not fixed, I have days which are super terrifying. I should tell you, I work in a people focused job so that means, presentations in front of like 20 people, interviews that seem like they’ll never end and having some full blown debates with managers that have no idea what I’m going through.

But do I let it own me? Do I fuck.

I walk right up to that anxiety motherfucker and tell it to do one. Because quite honestly I’m tired.

I’ll tell you one thing, you can do this. With practices like meditation, lavender pills, exercise and actually erasing people from your life that don’t help you get better. And you know what? You can kick ass in the workplace even with anxiety. You can own it, you can mask your panic attacks.

No one need ever know. All the while you’re working on yourself to be a better version of you.

Anxiety may be part of your life, but you can’t let it own you. I’ll tell you, the minute you look that anxiety straight in the face, the minute you recognise it for what it is, is the minute you overcome something you never thought you could.

And for anyone who tells you that you can’t kick ass in the workplace, hold down an amazing relationship, develop and maintain new and old friendships, well they can frankly suck it because you’re amazing.
