“they don’t want people to know that their daughter is a monster” 1) look who’s talking, and 2) literally what did she DOOOO that was so unforgivable, except be a teenage girl that was kinda insane over her comphet crush and have access to spells. i jst think, in this fantasy world, aurora rlly didn’t even… do… that much…. like, out of all the actions she did, she mostly jst kinda handed ppl tools and then it was out of her hands. jacks fucking traded his heart to her willingly (for a protection cuff that didn’t seem to do that much for the end of the story, anyway). i’m an aurora defender, because you guys see one (1) female character that’s not perfectly feminine and submissive and you start screaming

The gown made Evangeline feel as if she were wearing a happily ever after … Chips of broken gems, shimmering in shades of pink and blue and violet, covered the bodice and then gently dispersed over the hips of a flowing skirt with a slit that went up to her thigh. It was bold, and it made her feel adventurous as she spun in front of the wardrobe mirror, twirling until the broken gems glittered to life.

“What exactly are you doing?” Jacks drawled.

Caraval cover study!

I started with a bunch of thumbnails to take note of the elements of the story that could be used in a cover, and also to take note of some compositions I liked (yes, I tried taking an "aesthetic" photo for practice)

The first cover I decided to draw, the middle image, didn’t turn out quite as I envisioned. Even if it doesn't look all that bad, it doesn't look so appealing. The symmetry ended up becoming too bland and static, as well as the fonts, and minimalism didn't fit my standards. Still, I think it’s good to share for comparison.

In the final cover, I kept elements from my first study that I liked, but decided to go for a more dynamic, yet still symmetric, composition. The key colours also remain the same while a significant amout of details were added. The fonts are from the official collector's edition of the first volume. It turned out much better and I really enjoyed the challenge.
