Welcome to the Dungeons of Fear and Hunger.
#Fear and Hunger#D'arce Cataliss#Cahara#Ragnvaldr#Enki Ankarian#Unlike Dungeon Meshi - I cannot in good faith recommend this game to a broad audience.#My background with F&H goes as follows: I am hanging out with a friend. He says “hey try this game I've been playing.” I say “Okay!”#I have never heard of this game. I pick the mercenary. I go through 5 min of character history and background. I am mauled to death by dogs#It took me 4 resets to even get in the dungeon. But I finally get there. I am caught by a guard. He cuts off all but one of my limbs#I am forced to crawl around in a blood and corpse pit until the game tells me 'give up idiot'.#I reset. I am mauled by dogs again. I realize this is not for me but I am intrigued enough to go home and watch some playthroughs#And WOW what an interesting game it is! I really do appreciate games that blend their design philosophy with the theme it wants to set#This is a game about fear and hunger. And persevering. And penis (my god is there a lot of penis)#I recommend this to people who like extremely challenging games and can handle the many *content warnings* within this series#If the idea of Bloodborne/eldenring and undertale having a little RPG maker baby sounds appealing to you - give it a shot#It's made by ONE GUY and it's a great horror game. I am just really bad at it.#My friends just enjoy putting me in situations where I scream and yell. We don't talk about the corn mazes. Or the other horror game nights#Apparently I'm funny when I'm Scared!#As people who follow me on twitter might know; I am deep in the pits of this series right now. I will be back with more art.

post/734733274896809984/do-you-ever-worry-your-own-writing-might-come-off that makes sense. i was asking because i'm afraid of accidentally writing misogyny myself and i kind of admire what you do
Hmm... I wish I had better advice to give you on this front, but honestly, the only thing I can tell you is to consider the perspective of your female characters.
Women are people. They have thoughts and feelings of their own, so like... just let them have their own arcs. A lot of the worst misogyny in WC comes from the way that the writers just don't care about their girls (or, in the case of tall shadow, actually get undermined and forced to rewrite entire chapters), so they're not curious about their lives, or WHY they feel the way they do or what they want, or any direction for their character arcs.
Turtle Tail as an example. She'll often just end up feeling whatever Gray Wing's plot demands. She's gotta leave when Storm dumps him to make him feel lonely. She shows up again to love him in the next book. Lets her best friend Bumble get dragged back to Tom the Wifebeater, but is sad enough about her death to be "unreasonably angry" with Clear Sky, and then calms down and accept Gray Wing is right all along.
And then she dies, so he can have his very own fridge wife.
In this way, Turtle Tail's just being used to tell Gray Wing's story. They're not interested in why she would turn on Bumble, or god forbid any lingering negative feelings for how she didn't help her, or even resentment towards Clear Sky for killing her or Gray Wing for jumping to his defense. She isn't really going through her own character arc.
She does have personality traits of her own, don't misunderstand my criticism, but as a character she revolves around Gray Wing.
So, zoom out every now and then, and just ask yourself; "Whose story is being told by what I wrote? Do my female characters have goals, wants, and agency, or are they just supporting men? How do their choices impact the narrative?"
But that's already kinda assuming that you already have characters like Turtle Tail who DO have personalities and potential of their own. Here's some super simple and practical advice that helped me;
Tally the genders in your cast. How many are boys, how many are girls, how many are others?
And take stock of how many of those characters are just in the supporting cast, and compare that to the amount you have in the main cast.
If you have a significant imbalance, ESPECIALLY in the main cast, fire the Woman Beam.
It's a really simple trick to just write a male character, and then change its gender while keeping it the same. I promise women are really not fundamentally different from men lmao. You can consider how your in-universe gender roles affect them later, if you'd like, but when you're just starting to wean yourself off a "boy bias" this trick works like a charm.
Also you're not allowed to change the body type of any girl you Woman Beam because I said so. PLEASE allow your girls to have muscles, or be fat, or be old, or have lots of scars. Do NOT do what a cowardly Triple A studio does, where the women all have the same cute or sexy face and curvy body while they're standing next to dwarves, robots, and a gorilla.
Or this shit,
Tumblr media
If you do this I will GET you. If you're ever possessed by the dark urge, you will see my face appear in the clouds like Mufasa himself to guide you away from the path of evil.
Anyway, you get better at just making characters girls to begin with as time goes on and you practice it. It's really not as big of a deal as your brain might think it is.
Take a legitimate interest in female characters and try not to disproportionately hit them with parental/romance plots as opposed to the male cast, and you'll be fine. Don't think of them as "SPECIAL WOMEN CHARACTERS" just make a character and then let her be a girl, occasionally checking your tally and doing some critical thinking about their use in the story.
(Also remember I'm not a professional or anything, I'm just trying to give advice)

Witch AU Magic System!!
hello folks! if you've stumbled across this without knowing the context, this post is referring to my desert duo witch/fae au over on ao3, linked here :]
so because I've written a bunch in this world and am still writing in it, I realized that I need to explain more concretely how the magic works
Tumblr media
There are two major types of magic in this universe; Spontaneous and Material. If you've ever played dnd, it's very similar to the differences between Sorcerers and Wizards.
Spontaneous casters can use magic without needing components or materials to do so. They cast by manipulating the web of magic around them, often described as threads or strings of magic. Doing so draws energy from themselves, and if a spontaneous caster pushes themself too far, they leave themselves vulnerable and susceptible to passing out for long periods of time. Spontaneous casters either acquired their power during the dawn of magic, or were born with it afterwards.
Material casters require supplies in order to cast. Technically, anyone can be a material caster, it just takes the right amount of knowledge. These material casters are typically known as witches, though after the war against magic, all magic users were assigned that label. Most material castings are simple, but can have a big impact. Some examples of material castings are potions and different protection and other runes.
if you have questions on how the magic works in the world that this didn't answer, send me an ask and I'll explain it! doesn't matter if it's character related or world related or history related, I can and will ramble about this for hours. the answers to your questions are just one ask away!!
thank you, and happy reading!!

Both as an interest check for the thing I may or may not be working on and because I've been curious about this question for years and now have access to polls:
As per usual I'd be interested to see people's thoughts on this in the replies if you have any. I remember back when I first got into the fandom this was a pretty big debate but it's died down a lot as the fandom's shrunk so I'm kind of curious where people sit on this now.

“His name is Suzuki Shou. He’s everything you’d expect from the leader of this kind of group. Charismatic, intelligent, a powerful esper himself, born to a family wealthy enough to be able to fund a project like this. But he’s not why I came here.” Hanazawa zoomed out so the whole image was visible, and Shigeo’s blood froze. His face was obscured, turned towards Suzuki as he was, but Shigeo would recognize that dark-haired silhouette anywhere. “Does the name Kageyama Ritsu mean anything to you?” Hanazawa asked. 75%
the last major part of my ageswap au has been completed! I spent so long agonizing over this. good lord. please enjoy.

everyone is (rightfully) criticizing watcher for putting their content behind a paywall but i also think a reason watcher is generally less successful is bc they are trying so hard to make it a brand. when the reality is people loved buzzfeed unsolved bc of ryan and shane's banter and personalities.

When people give a recommendation for a series they love (TV, book, movie, etc) released pre-2000s or earlier and have to preface it with "yeah it's really dated, but..." like why do you think I'm an idiot and would be judging it by modern values

I just finished the latest Rivers of London book Among Our Weapons and would like to remind everyone that I LOVE PETER GRANT—wifeguy to a literal river goddess, proud new dad, habitual networker and adopter of people and animals, casual learner of new languages, curious amateur scientist, who always tries de-escalation first even when he thinks there's no chance it will work—A WHOLE LOT.

HEADCANONS FOR THE 7TH EMILY WINDSNAP BOOK *WARNING: SPOILERS*...
Aaron becomes King/Chief of Forgotten Island.
OR Ella becomes Queen/Chief of Forgotten Island, with Aaron acting as official ambassador to the outside world. Emily did say they should have a woman leader.
Neptune makes Aaron his next heir, which results in Aaron splitting his time between the Forgotten Island and Shiprock. This would also result in Neptune and Aaron becoming closer like a father and son. The way these 2 interact in the books, you would never guess that they’re family.
Neptune makes time in his busy schedule for more bonding activities with Aaron, who’s now his only living family.
Neptune erects a statue of Aurora. Either on Forgotten Island or the new island that Jeras created. That statue might become another Majesty Island tourist attraction.
Aaron makes regular visits to where Jeras and Fortuna died.
Aurora, Jeras, and Fortuna were from medieval Europe. Since Jeras has been alive for 500+ years. And the author does say Aurora’s home was based on a castle in Cornwall.
Majesty Island guests think the merfolk at first glance are just human swimmers in mermaid costumes...until they touch their tails. Or hear them talk underwater. Some humans might think the latter is just a really cool underwater trick. (This headcanon REALLLYYYY depends on the time period. If this story’s set in the early 2000s -- when the series was first written, and before mermaiding became popular -- it’s unlikely anyone would mistake the merfolk’s tails for costumes.)
Majesty Island guests taking selfies with the merfolk in this story. Since the hotel manager believed in mermaid sightings, I can believe they used that to advertise the hotel. So maybe guests come expecting mermaids and aren’t too surprised at meeting one.
Shona tried human food for the first time at Majesty Island, and didn’t like it at first.
OR Shona tried human food for the first time, liked it, but then got food poisoning for a bit. We see Jake eating human food just fine, maybe living with humans just made his stomach used to it.
Jake, being an adult, gets mistaken at Majesty Island for a professional mermaid performer. This means some people mistake his human wife for his agent or assistant.
Majesty Island might actually hire mermaid performers! So what’s gonna happen if those performers met actual merfolk like Emily? Emily might like it. As a semi-mers, Emily could relate to how the performers must switch between walking and wearing tails. And being raised human most of her life, Emily would appreciate these performers trying to make mermaids look good to humans. Meanwhile Shona and Jake, as full-time mers, would either love or hate seeing someone impersonate their kind. And how would the mermaid performers feel, meeting the very creatures they’re pretending to be?
Millie eventually expands her fortune-telling business to Majesty Island. Either building a website to provide online services, or having an office at Majesty Island itself. IIRC I think she did several odd jobs in Brightport.
Thanks again to @daughterofposeidon8246-blog for recommending this book to me :). 7 Emily books down, 2 more to go!

so...I’ve finally given ‘Don’t Say No’ a chance and...I regret it so hard... I’ve gone from watching it at 2x speed to 3x speed...whhhhhyyyyy are so many scenes just either: a) reused setting footage from another part of the series  b) really long drawn out moments of melodrama
