The "aggressive spider" post made me think of my favorite, most specialist, sweetest little bugs of all time, Sunspiders. (Who are not even spiders)

They are very much attracted to shade since they like to borrow under, like plants and stuff, but as a result, are often seen chasing people through the desert, which sounds goofy but ppl really hate it for them.

Ive noticed that solifugae in general are for some reason, incredibly vilified? (There are actually people who believe they kill and eat camels,,, how?) There are like countless misconceptions about these little guys :( but i love them forever and am kissing them in my heart

I deeply love solifuges! Unfortunately my first introduction to them was a chain email when I was in high school circa the early 2000s, maybe 2004 or so, that was some sort of weird pro-war-in-Iraq propaganda about "what our troops are dealing with over there." It included the below photo and a whole bunch of made up "facts" about camel spiders that made them sound absolutely terrifying.

For those who are unfamiliar, this photo uses false perspective and these two lil babes are each only about two inches long. Claims that they're venomous and somehow kill camels or chew their stomachs out are obviously not even close to reality. In fact, solifuges don't have venom at all. They look a little scary and alien if you're unfamiliar with them but they're fairly harmless!

#I've had him 14 months now #they tend to live only a year from what i read and it checks with his behaviour #he's gotten really slow and a lot less aggressive in the last months #i tend to cut open his mealworms now before feeding them to him #but he seems to be okay and not stressed or anything so i'm letting him live out his old man months #when i got him he was so fast and violent he would run up to the glass and violently bite at it #spider #camel spider

I LOVE MY BUGS 😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️

I made a new character!! His name is puppy camel! He’s sunspots uncle! He’s rich as hell and a ex athlete/track runner (though he still does marathons with his nephew for fun!) he’s a very chill and silly dude he’s also based off of a camel spider! He also loved spoiling his nieces and nephews and tries very hard to get them into the “family business” (running)

@digita1garden​ submitted: Various friends from the Phoenix area of Arizona, USA. I would appreciate ids on these guys if possible; I have possible id’s for a few of them but I am nowhere near sure at all (other than the bark scorpion (#6), hornworms (#7), and black widow (#8) which I am fairly sure of).

All of these friends were left where they were found, other than the hornworms which were relocated to a different plant of the same species to accommodate our trimming of their original plant.

What a lovely bunch of friends! They are in order: an angle-winged katydid in the genus Microcentrum, a Polistes paper wasp possibly Polistes arizonensis, solifuge aka camel spider but don’t ask me species because idk, a plusiine looper moth, an elegant bush katydid, rip to the scorpion’s cricket dinner, hornworms as you said but specifically pink-spotted hawkmoths, a widow as you said, giant crab (huntsman) spider, and finally RIP to the dead sphinx in the last photo - I’d need a photo of the other side to have a better idea of species on that one.

I MUST share  photo of the adult version of the hornworms, though, because they are beautiful!

a few fun facts under the cut!!

She remembers the thing that bit her VERY WELL because she was fucking terrified when she saw it (spider top left, it's called a camel spider and apparently it's? not a spider? redcookies ((discord server)) said it was a soliphuges which is kind of scarier)

Lost her arm from a workplace accident :( wasn't really anything special somebody just didn't tell her a machine was turning on and she barely had enough time to get out (thanks spidey sense) but uhhh super healing will not fix an entirely crushed arm ;-;

she has SO many freckles like literally everywhere. On her hands, arms, chest, face, shoulders and along her back :]

she has really sensitive skin and is really really prone to sunburn, so she wears layers (part of the spider-bite gave her temperature immunity!)

Lives in a desert-like version of New York, pretty much the same but it's just hotter

she's really really scared of spiders because most of them look like camel spiders and they practically have TEETH.

she likes rice krispies and regularly eats them. you know how some of the mini packages of rice krispies have space to write messages on them? that's how she labels the criminals she catches but doesn't have time to drop off at the police station XD

leaves an empty package with the words "TRIED TO STEAL A BIKE" on it with a little mask drawn on it and that's how ppl recognize them

Her webs are not organic, as camel spiders don't spin webs. She can still stick though!

She grew a lot more than most spider-people do, due to the SIZE of these things like seriously look it up they can be HUGE.

Teeth aren't any sharper, but she does have quite the jaw strength lol

her mask can unhinge and allow her to bite. she's a little feral guys
