Pokemon Card of the Day #3144: Gengar & Mimikyu-GX (Team Up)
Tumblr media
Gengar & Mimikyu-GX was all about punishing large hand sizes. It hit really hard if the opponent had a bunch of Trainer cards, but wasn't so great otherwise. This was hard to control, and you were very unlikely to see this was a main attacker as a result. It was, at least, good in enough spots and in an accessible enough package that some Psychic decks could seriously look at this. It wasn't like 2 Energy was a lot to pay for and it was a Basic Pokemon, so a backup role was certainly a possibility in theory.
240 HP was a bit lower than the typical Tag Team. It combined with the Weakness to Darkness to actually cause a real problem in most formats. SUM-On had a lot of Zoroark-GX, and giving up 3 Prizes to a hit from that common of a Pokemon was not good at all. Spiritomb could also take advantage of it in UPR-On, then the later Eternatus VMAX could all cause problems in a big way. A Fighting Resistance was less likely to matter until the very end, where TEU-On had Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX to consider. It actually could let this card survive and extra turn and was nice there. The Retreat Cost was 2, so Switch was nice but not absolutely required.
Poltergeist was really good in the right spot but not too reliable. 2 Psychic Energy let you look at the opponent's hand. The attack did 50 damage for each Trainer card there, so even 3 Trainers made this reasonable. Big hand sizes could be punished nicely by this, but the attack was also prone to being awful against small hands and things like Judge or Marnie weren't going to guarantee a full hand of Trainers. This made Gengar & Mimikyu-GX terrifying in spots but pretty poor in others, but even seeing this card on the field made people have to play differently to avoid the attack so it had value in games in that way even if the big hit didn't go off.
Horror House GX was meant to set up Poltergeist, but you only got to do it once. The attack did no damage for a Psychic Energy, but it also prevented the opponent from playing cards of any sort from their hand during their next turn. Each player also drew cards until they had 7 in their hand. This basically forced the opponent to have 8 cards there during your next turn, and that gave a good chance at a huge Poltergeist. It also could prevent the opponent from setting up during that time, which was useful if you needed an extra turn and they didn't have their side ready to go.
Gengar & Mimikyu-GX found a role in several decks as a back-up attacker that took advantage of the spots it could hit really hard in. Malamar decks were the first ones to use it, and Psychic versions of Mewtwo & Mew-GX could access the attack here from the discard pile. Later decks like Dragapult VMAX and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX sometimes kept a copy of this around as well for the same reasons. While it was never the focus of the deck, it had enough moments that it was something you had to know was available when facing decks of the type.

Taking Lugia Vstar, a brand new deck archetype to a tournament with little playtesting, but a good understanding of win cons against the meta seemed like a solid option.
Regigigas for the Kyurem Vmax and Mew Vmax matches, Rekrom to help stall and target lightning weak Pokémon, Radiant Charizard for clean up duty and Yveltal for the dreaded Duraludon Vmax match.
What I didn't expect was a wild spread of decks including a pure lightning Boltund Vmax, Shadow Rider Calyrex, and Swim Freely Dewgong single prize!
------------------
Round 1: Ice Rider Calyrex w/Kyurem Vmax
Not much to say. Lugia Vstar did what it does. The Archeops hit the discard turn 1 through the use of Evolution incense and Ultra Ball, and came out to the bench turn 2 via Lugia V star's Summoning Star ability. This happened in both games and rest is history. Serena gusted up anything with energy attached to keep my opponent out of resources both games.
Game record 2-0
Tournament record 1-0
------------------
Round 2: Hisuian Zoroark
I knew this was a tough match. My opponent needed 2 turns to be hitting 280 damage (OHKO on Lugia Vstar) and I needed 2 to get Lugia firing so this was a race.
Unfortunately game one my hand bricked hard. No outs to discard 2 Archeops so went with one in the hopes of getting enough energy around to hang in.
Sadly it didn't go my way.
Game 2, back on form. My opponent missed their energy and I was able to boss Zoroarks up before they evolved. My opponent scooped once the second Zoroark V was taken out.
Game 3 was close. Both decks were firing and I was making good use of collapsed stadium to limit the damage output of my opponent.
A very choice Marnie disrupted my hand enough that I was forced to dig deep for an out but unfortunately back to back Marie's really ruined my flow and drew me into my remaining special energy. With no attach options left through Archeops it was inevitable...
Game Record 1-2
Tournament Record 1-1
------------------ Round 3: Shadow Rider Calyrex Game 1 went pretty straight forward. Lugia V opener, with plenty of fetch and discard to get 2 Archeops in the discard for a turn 2 Summoning Star. The Shadow Rider deck struggled to get going to it was a quick KO on 2 VMaxs and a win. Game 2 followed the same suit. Game Record 2-0 Tournament Record 2-1 ------------------ Round 4: Giratina VStar A round against a friend and someone from the same playset group. I Opened game 1 with 3 Lugia Vstar, 1 Lugia V, 2 Boss's Orders and an Ultra ball. No points for guessing how game one played out. With my opponent having a Battle VIP in hand, and Flower Selecting into a second, their board state just crippled me by turn 4. Game 2 played out better, and I took it to a single prize between us, using Zekrom to paralyze my opponents Giratina Vstar to buy myself some time. They promptly escape rope'd out of it, and by the next turn, missing a crutial Boss/Serena to take game, it meant I unfortunately tumbled to 2-2 on the day. Game Record 0-2 Tournament Record 2-2 ------------------ Round 5: Lugia VStar Round 5 was against another friend and fellow playtest group member. We were running near identical desks so it was a straight Lugia Vstar fight. We had decided prior to the game that I would concede to give them the win and guarantee they make top cut so we just played it out for the exhibition. Game 1 I stormed out to a solid position, hitting my discards perfectly. I utilised Zekrom to hold my opponent in place and hitting for weakness on their Lugia Vstar (a combination of Double Turbo energy and 2 Aurora meant I hit for 220 to keep them in place instead of the KO to buy myself some time) I went 2-1 for I got the glory between friends whilst helping our group of 3 take half of the top cut slots. Game Record 2-1 Tournament Record 2-3 ------------------ Overall, I think I had a good outing. I bricked a few times, made some sloppy plays due to hunger/thirst and missed some really easy plays. I've taken a lot away from the event in terms of my own play and my win conditions. It's also been a good test for Lugia, giving me plenty to think on and make some changes to the deck. Going 5th overall, and helping the "team" take 2 of 4 top cut slots was worth it, and ultimately they came 1st and 2nd on the day. The event itself wasn't without drama - players storming off after big losses, the event starting late, and questions around prizing, but that's for another time. Take it easy ~ Prof Hickory.

Gengar VMAX Single Strike Deck
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gengar VMAX Single Strike has decent toughness with 320 HP and no resistance. As expected for Dark Pokemon, Gengar VMAX has Fighting Wekaness so it can be easily OHKO by popular Fighting Pokemon like Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX. It has high Retreat Cost [3 Energy] so it is not worth using Energy to reatreat. The best way to retreat Gengar VMAX is by using "Switch" Item.
Gengar VMAX both attacks are very strong. The first attack, Panic Fear does 60 damage for each of your opponent's Pokemon V and Pokemon GX in play. Since your opponent can play up to 6 in any combination of Pokemon V and/or Pokemon GX, Panic Fear max damage will be 360.  This attack is good against decks that relies on multiple Pokemon V such as Eternatus VMAX or Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX etc. And, you only need 2 Dark Energy to use this attack. In a way, this attack can limit opponent from setting up a lot of Pokemon V. Otherwise, your opponent's can't stop Gengar VMAX from OHKO their Pokemon.
Gengar VMAX second attack, G-MAX Swallow has very high damage of 250. Even without the help of Trainers, this pure damage can OHKO any Basic Pokemon V. But, Gengar VMAX can't attack during your next turn after using this attack and 3 Dark Energy is required to used this attack. If you want to use G-MAX Swallow during your next turn, you need "Switch" and 1 of your Benched Pokemon with 2 or less Retreat Cost needs to be equipped with "Air Balloon".
Its pre-evloution Gengar V Single Strike has useful attacks. Although Gengar V first attack, Dark Slumber has low damage of 40, the attack can put "Sleep Condition" on your opponent's Pokemon. Pokemon with Sleep Condition can't attack unless your opponent gets head from flipping a coin at the end of the turn. If you are lucky, you might be able to stall your opponents for few turns while you are setting up for Gengar VMAX.
Gengar V second attack, Pain Burst has 190 damage and this damage 2HKO Pokemon VMAX. This attack also inflicts 3 damage counter on Gengar V after you use it. The more you use this attack, the weaker Gengar V becomes and the easier for your opponent to knock out Gengar VMAX. Gengar V both attacks have the same Energy Cost as Gengar VMAX attacks.

Miko Opens Pokemon Cards
So I may have made a mistake in getting back into opening Pokemon cards. At first it was the “oops, I misread something” in getting two different Elite Trainer Boxes (Evolving Skies and Fusion Strike), which come with themed sleeves and dice (pretty cool), but a ton of energy cards and only 8 booster packs each. Thankfully, Pokemon cards have always been 10 cards per pack unlike other TCGs so it was still fun.
HOWEVER, from those two Elite Trainer Boxes, I did pull
A very pretty Vaporeon VMax card (I was so excited cause it’s rainbow-y)
A Secret Gold Boost Shake
Gengar V
Chandelure V
A Reverse Holo Vulpix
2 holos
The full Corvi-set
And aside from those, 17 reverse holos
Tumblr media
So pretty cool. Clearly, the Vaporeon VMax is the best to me.
Tumblr media
Today I got my Chilling Reign booster box (what I WAS looking for originally) and I actually had to take a small break halfway through. In part cause I was pulling the same cards over and over and over and I already grabbed the ones I want (we’re talking un/common repeats) so I was getting annoyed.
I pulled another Secret Gold card, Urn of Vitality
A Galarian Slowking VMax
Ice Rider Calyrex V
Metagross V
Blissey V
Liepard V (love me some cats!!)
A reverse Holo Zebstrika (and a common Blitzle)
And I got the full Castform set (one as a Reverse Holo)
A Holo AND Reverse Holo Porygon Z
The full Reverse Holo set of Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill
Volcanion V Full Art
Tornadus V ALTERNATE Full Art
And 35 reverse holos
Tumblr media
I got WAAAAAAAAAAAY too many trainers in this booster box though. Like two or three per pack. I was stunned or perhaps not used to that? I dunno. You let me know what’s common. And it was frustrating pulling so many multiples.
Tumblr media
I’m checking in with a friend who modifies Pokemon cards for her art store if she wants to take any off my hands and with Bullmoose to see if they’ll “buy them back” cause it would be much less trouble getting rid of those I’m uninterested in keeping in bulk versus singularly on ebay or something similar. Also, any thoughts on selling the energy and trainer cards?
Tumblr media
I may try this again, but with the way things went...a lot of Pokemon I didn’t know or even like the art of...it may be a little while before that happens. I was really hoping to pull at least one of the legendary birds from this set or a nice rainbow card.
