I saw an early screening of the Mean Girls movie last night, so here is a summary of my thoughts, comparing the movie musical to the Broadway musical, which I was lucky enough to see live in 2018!
Changed that I liked:
The usage of social media in the Broadway show made it very clear that it was written by adults who didn’t know much about Gen-Z. It was probably one of the worst parts of the show in my opinion. But Tina Fey must have done her research since 2018, because the way the movie uses TikTok, memes, vlogging, and FaceTime to push the story forward worked VERY well. I think there were some influencer cameos, but it didn’t feel they were included to show how “young and hip” they were, It actually added authenticity.
The diversity within the cast and changing last names to reflect the characters’ backgrounds (Karen Smith ➡️ Karen Shetty, Janis Sarkisian ➡️ Janis 'Imi'ike)
Cutting down “Meet the Plastics.” It’s a very exposition-heavy song and doesn’t need to be super long, even though the full version is quite catchy and fun.
All of the new jokes landed so well, probably because Tina Fey’s writing style is better suited for the screen as opposed to the stage.
This is more of a comparison of the musical vs. the original film, but a big change was The Plastics’ weaponized wokeness (which I talk about here).
The production design for most of the songs was very different. The stage musical has a lot of rock songs, which were changed to a pop sound for the movie. I personally prefer rock musicals, but it was a good way to give the movie a separate identity from its predecessor so it doesn’t risk becoming a carbon copy. It worked on some songs (“Someone Gets Hurt” and “World Burn”) but not on others (“A Cautionary Tale” and “Revenge Party”).
Cutting the joke about Regina’s ass being big. It was a very low-brow joke, which I’m not a fan of, and was just really immature. Thank God that was changed to her falling, which still shows her being embarrassed without her body being the joke.
Explicitly making Janis a lesbian! (It’s only implied in the stage show with “It’s not even true… I only have one butt”) And she goes to prom with a girl while Damien dances with a boy! ALSO THERE’S REJANIS LORE AND IT’S SO HEARTBREAKING I LOVE IT
megan thee stallion just… being there
Miss Norbury and Principal Duvall being a couple and owning a dog together!!!
As a low mezzo, I appreciated whoever decided to lower the key for “I’d Rather Be Me.” I felt very represented 🩷
Having Cady be raised in a single-parent household so it focuses in more on her relationship with her mom. Jenna Fischer was so motherly and sincere and brought a warmth to the movie. Their scene together near the end made me emotional (you’re never too old to ask your parent to stay with you until you fall asleep) (also this is my request to make jenna fischer my mom)
Changes that I didn’t like:
Cutting BOTH of Damian’s solos??? (SHE’S LEAVING!!!!!!!! JUST LIKE MY DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Cutting “More Is Better.” It wasn’t necessarily a memorable song, but it did give both Cady and Aaron more depth, both as separate characters and within their relationship.
While cutting some of the songs helped with pacing, cutting HALF of the score made me forget that it was a musical sometimes, which sucks because I really like musicals!!!
Other stuff:
The movie was marketed horribly. One of my friends didn’t even know it was gonna be a musical because there were no songs in the trailers 💀 (Also, this isn’t just a Mean Girls problem. The Color Purple also didn’t have any songs in the trailer. I didn’t even know Wonka was a musical until I saw it in theaters, so that was a bit of a shock.) If you’re producing a musical movie, maybe your focus groups should be musical fans, because that’s still a HUGE market.
Auliʻi Cravalho’s voice is STUNNING! She and Jaquel Spivey had great chemistry and their friendship felt so genuine!
The opening and ending transitions from the garage were everything to me
The EDITING
Angourie Rice is a great actor and fit Cady perfectly… except for her singing. Out of the entire cast she was easily the weakest in terms of vocals and it was pretty disappointing since she’s the LEAD. I could barely hear her in the new song “What Ifs” because of how quiet and breathy she was. I think it’s a better written song compared to “Roar” though.
Jon Hamm cameo!
Ashley Park cameo!
I cannot stress enough how funny this movie was. I was probably laughing louder than everyone else in the theatre.
I lost my shit during “Meet the Plastics” when Regina unzipped her jacket and Cady was staring at her boobs. She’s just like me fr 🏳️‍🌈
I know that Regina is a horrible person but I couldn’t find it in me to dislike her in the slightest. She just served too much cunt 😩
Christopher Briney is a good actor, but I don't think he was the right choice for Aaron Samuels. I would hate to ridicule anyone for their looks, but it still plays an important part in casting. Aaron is supposed to be a somewhat naive, wholesome, hot jock (and Regina has high standards, so he better be a fucking model). Briney is definitely a cutie, but gives off “smoldering badboy with a secret sensitive side” energy, which isn’t what Aaron should be.
The fantasy sequences (Stupid With Love, Revenge Party, October 3rd). I LOVE when movie musicals USE the medium to tell stories in a way that they can’t on a stage!!!
THE CHOREO!!! Everyone freezing then shaking in “Someone Get Hurt” AHHHH that entire number was HYPNOTIZING!!!!!!!!!!! My friend told me the choreographer’s name is Kyle Hanagami, so shout out to him. (also reneé rapp was so fucking hot while singing that oh my lord)
I will be calling my pimples “face breasts” from now on (avantika ilysm)
DAMIAN’S FRENCH COVER OF THE ICARLY THEME SONG 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
why was there a 0.5 camera shot of cady during revenge party 💀
“I’d Rather Be Me” was so much fun and I felt so fucking empowered. And the transition from the song to the bus was just *chef’s kiss*
“donut worry i am still your freend” 🥺
Lindsay Lohan cameo!!!!!!!!!
NOT ENOUGH RENEÉ RAPP 😭😭
Overall, the movie was not perfect, but the Broadway show already had plenty of flaws, so it’s understandably how that would affect the adaptation. I still a LOT of fun and would definitely see it again. Go stream Snow Angel by Reneé Rapp. i love women 🥰🥰🥰

47 w cadina
13 w macaronie
hello darling nonnie thank you very much for the ask :)
47, out of spite- cadina
“Regina, please,” Cady begs, ‘running’ as fast as she can after her friend in her ridiculously high heels. Inconvenient, but they do make her legs look fantastic.
“No! You know what people say about you?!” Regina bellows. Cady doesn’t hear anything else. All she can hear is the wind blowing harshly in her ears, ruffling her hair around. Regina looks amazing. Blonde waves flying around her head like a halo. She reaches up absentmindedly and brushes some away so it doesn’t get caught in her lip gloss. She’s beautiful.
“Regina, please,” Cady begs. She feels herself sob before she can stop it, before she even knows she’s crying. “I’m sorry. Get out of the road, at least, please, let’s talk about this-”
Something somewhere inside Regina seems to soften at seeing Cady in tears. She’s still glaring at Cady, but she stalks the other way, over to her. Cady sniffles.
They both jump as a bus goes roaring by, right where Regina just was. There’s no way it could’ve slowed down in time. Regina stares hollowly at the road. Cady does the same.
“Regina, really, I’m so sorry, I never meant for all this to happen-”
“Shut the fuck up,” Regina growls. “You did. You knew perfectly well what you were doing. You did all that to me knowing exactly what would happen. Don’t lie.”
Cady bites her lip and tries to stop the tears streaming down her face. Regina isn’t wrong. She knew what was going to happen. Part of her knew how all this was going to end. “I’m still sorry.”
“God, do you ever shut up?” Regina huffs.
Cady doesn’t say anything else.
“I don’t fucking care if you’re sorry. You are a million times worse than I could ever be,” Regina growls, stalking closer.
“I am not! Janis almost killed herself because of you!”
“And what’s she gonna do now? You think she’s okay? You turned on her just as much as you did me,” Regina says lowly.
“You’re such a bitch,” Cady says. Regina laughs cruelly.
“Yeah. But at least I know I am. You act like you’re still all innocent and don’t know what you’re doing. Like you didn’t know perfectly well.”
Cady wants to respond. She can feel the retort trapped inside her mouth, the venom in it stinging her tongue and lips.
Before she knows what she’s doing, she’s surging forward and kissing Regina. Regina freezes. Doesn’t move.
Cady does. She grips Regina’s too-perfect face between her hands and kisses her hard, biting at her lips and tangling her hands in her perfectly soft blonde locks.
“There, I shut up, are you happy?” she bites before she turns on her heel and walks away. Regina stops her before she can get too far, grabbing her wrist and sinking her talons into it.
“Maybe. But you’re not getting away that easily.”
13, discreetly- macaronnie
Neither Veronica Sawyer nor Heather McNamara are any stranger to the honeymoon phase and all that comes with it.
They’ve both had plenty of experience with the shiny-eyed, sappy, touch-filled time that comes with any new relationship.
Neither of them have ever had to hide it.
They quickly learn it’s a lot harder than they expect.
How hard could it be, they said when they agreed to give each other a try. We don’t have to touch or hug or cuddle or kiss all the time. We can handle at least a day at school.
They cannot.
After the first week it’s clear that they’re both going through some emotional turmoil being able to see their girlfriend in such close, but not able to touch.
So they amend the rules a little bit. As long as they’re sure nobody is looking, little touches and cuddles and whatnot here and there is okay.
Which leads them to today. Mac and Veronica are sitting on the same side of the Heathers’ lunch table. Mac leans into Veronica’s side while she picks all the veggies off her cafeteria pizza, and Veronica doesn’t move her away.
Veronica takes a little cat nap on her shoulder once she’s wolfed down her turkey sandwich and carrot sticks. Mac continues chatting with Chandler and Duke like nothing is amiss.
Someone drops a tray on the other side of the cafeteria. After everything with JD, Chandler and Duke both jump and whirl around to see what’s happened. Veronica and Mac take advantage of them both looking away to steal some quick kisses.
“Oh, for fucks sake,” Duke says when she turns back around to see them sitting a suspicious distance apart and both blushing violently.
“What?” Mac asks innocently.
“You two cannot still think you’re being subtle,” Chandler huffs.
“What do you mean?” Veronica asks.
“Don’t play cute,” Duke says with a roll of her eyes. “Everyone knows, give up the act.”
“What act?” Mac asks.
Chandler makes a series of obscene gestures with her hands and very sexual noises, and Duke smushes two pieces of her broccoli together with some smoochy sounds. Veronica gags and covers her eyes with her hand, and Mac hides under the table with a flustered squeak. Veronica desperately says, “Okay, we get it!”
“We’re dating,” Mac mumbles sheepishly.
“Oh my god, we know!”

day 20: family dinner: cadina
TW for h0m0ph0bia, h0m0ph0bic slurs, and mention of murder... heh. Sorry. Enjoy?
Originally written November 23, 2021
"My God, Cady, how many coats of that have you put on? A hundred?" Regina glances at Cady briefly before turning her eyes back to the road. "Waste of good lip gloss."
Cady blushes and puts the cap on the lip gloss, tossing it over Regina's lap into the storage space of her car door so she can't get to it. "More like two hundred," she mutters without an ounce of humor in her voice.
"Aw, Caddie," Regina soothes, instantly going into protective girlfriend mode at the tone of Cady's voice. "It's gonna be okay, babes, alright? Besides, I'm the one coming out. It's fine."
"But what if they don't like me?"
Regina clucks her tongue and quickly kisses ons of Cady's cheeks. "Firstly, I just broke my rules for you, so you best be grateful. Second off, if anyone in my family doesn't like you, I have no reason to stay close to them. I mean, Cady Cat, my mom loves you and Kylie already treats you like an older sister. My grandparents are probably too senile by now to even understand what I'm saying, and I don't give a sh- a crap about what my aunts and uncles say, alright? I love you. Their opinion could never change that."
"But-"
"No buts, Cady. C'mere." Cady eagerly tries to climb into the seat with Regina. "No! Not like that, you goof. Give me your hand, you useless bisexual." Cady pouts at the lack of closeness but takes the offered hand. "It's gonna be okay, okay? We'll be fine."
"We'll be fine," Cady repeats quietly. "Yeah."
As soon as they walk into the door, Regina drops Cady's hand like a hot potato and shoots her an apologetic look. You're cuddling me later, Cady mouths. Regina shoots her a quick thumbs up and turns to the first incoming auntie.
"Hi, Aunt Mary! Hi, Aunt Lucia! Hi, Aunt Josephine! Hello, Marcus." Hugs are given out to all the aunts and uncles in a ten-foot radius, and cousins are all greeted with eye rolls and high fives. Cady's already lost. She glances around, wondering if there's some animal she can sneak off to pet, when Mrs George saves her.
"Cady, darling! Look at you! You're so tall!" Cady, five foot two on a good day, outright laughs at that, and Regina's mom pulls her into a hug. "We haven't seen you around in a long time! Kylie was starting to wonder if you and Regina had another-"
"Nooope," Regina interrupts, grabbing Cady's hand and pulling her away from her mom. "We did not."
"We did the opposite," Cady whispers, giggling, and Regina lovingly rolls her eyes before turning back to her mother.
"Everything's fine, Mama. I think I saw Aunt Phyllis over there, didn't you mean to talk to her about something?"
"Hmm. Actually, yeah, I think so!" Mrs George bustles off to find her sister, and Cady looks up at Regina.
"What did she need to talk about?" "Nothing," Regina says with a smile. "Come on. Let's go, I'll introduce you to the annoyances."
"Okay!" Cady lets herself get pulled into a group of cousins.
"First is Marcus," Regina says, pointing to a brown-haired guy playing on his phone. "He's got a girlfriend named Samantha or something that he will not shut up about ever. That's Brian. He got a perm over the summer and it was a bad choice. There's Crystal, she's cool, her mom's not." Crystal flashes a peace sign from where she's perched on the couch. "She's also bi, if you couldn't tell by looking at her."
That gives Cady a bit of hope. A fellow queer that looks a fair amount less scary than her girlfriend? A godsend.
"That one is Sadie, and she continues to dye her hair neon pink, much to her father's dismay. I keep telling her to go lavender but she won't listen to me. Next to her is Kayla, her sister, and her brother Reuben. They're alright. Finally, there's Ellie Rose, who will yell at you if you say her name any different, and Jaxon Jay who will do the same. It doesn't really matter who their parents are, honestly. And no one's gonna blame you if you mess up a bit. You also just don't have to socialize."
"Okay," Cady says quietly, trying to match names to faces in her head. Sadie with the pink hair. Ellie Rose and Jaxon Jay who are the young ones. Crystal the bi one with the weird name. Brian who looks like a poodle. "Got it."
"Want me to test you?" Regina jokes. "Kidding, kidding. Our family usually does food very soon after everyone's here, so I think- hold up. Mom?" she yells. "When are we eating?"
"We're waiting on Rodney!" her mom calls back from the kitchen.
"Damn Rodney," Regina murmurs. "Okay! Thanks Mom!"
"No problem, sweetie!"
"So, wait, Caddie," Regina starts to ask, leading Cady into a little side office where no one's around. "Do you wanna do the coming out over dinner or after?"
"Uh..." Even the mention of coming out as a couple drains the color from Cady's face. "Whatever you wanna do. It's your family and your house, I'm fine with whenever."
"I may have to take drastic measures," Regina warns.
"Like what?" Cady asks, imagining Regina tackling one of the old men she saw playing cribbage with a football game on. "Like a lion?"
"No, silly," Regina chuckles. "You and your lions."
"Then like what?"
"This," Regina answers, pulling Cady in for a kiss. All her anxiety settles down at the feel of Cady's lips, at least momentarily.
"I can live with that," Cady replies after unfortunately needing to take in a bit more air than was accessible a second ago. "What are you gonna do? Just kiss me and scare them away?"
"Exactly. Boo."
Cady cracks a little smile. "Well, worst case scenario I get another pie in my hair."
"Worst- wait, another?"
"Story for another time," Cady giggles, waving a hand. No sooner does she get the words out than the sound of a spatula hitting a cowbell makes everyone in the house shut up and cover their ears.
"Dinnertime!" Mrs George shouts at the top of her lungs, and the house explodes in chaos. Regina pulls Cady a bit closer to her while all the various relatives stampede around them.
"Let's take just a few seconds to let all the teenage boys clear out, yeah?" Cady nods, and Regina smiles. "Good. You up for those cuddles I owe you?"
Now, normally Cady would love some cuddles, but the possiblity that someone could walk in on them is too large. She shakes her head lamely and lies back on the couch opposite Regina.
"Hey, what's wrong, Cads? You never turn down cuddles?" Cady just shakes her head. "Aww, Cady. It's gonna be okay. You have me and Crys and Kylie in your corner if no one else. Though I'm pretty sure Sadie is a closet lesbian. And Uncle Tim never married, so like..."
Cady smiles a tiny bit, but it's enough to calm Regina's worries. "I think it should be safe to go get some food now. Come on."
After dinner, during which Cady basically just watches in awe as Regina carries five conversations at once (and also trades finger guns with Crystal), everyone's decently happy or at least content, and the conversation has died down to a few chats here and there. "You ready?" Regina whispers.
"Yeah. How..?"
"Leave it to me." Regina takes Cady's hand under the table and Cady immediately tightens her fingers around her girlfriend's. She doesn't mind, though, she's just as nervous as Cady seems to be.  "Hey, everyone? Do we wanna do the thanksgiving... circle... thingy?"
"Don't we usually do that at Thanksgiving, dear?" asks an aunt. Regina smiles sweetly.
"Well, yeah, but what's the harm in doing it again?" The aunt still looks skeptical. "I love hearing everyone's ideas and thoughts. It makes me really happy... very proud to be a part of this family."
That does it. Everyone stands up and holds hands, which makes it not weird for Cady to sustain her death grip on Regina. "I'll start!" calls an uncle eight people down from them.
"Cady, honey, you don't have to participate if you don't want to," says Mrs George. Cady nods.
"Family!" declares the uncle. Eight.
"Food," says Regina's grandpa. Seven.
"Sam," says Marcus, and everyone rolls their eyes. Six.
"Technology," Crystal deadpans. Five.
"Books!" Ellie Rose says happily, and a couple awws are heard from around the circle. Four.
"My gerbil," adds an old lady, and a few people have to stifle their laughter. Three.
"Sleep," says a bored-looking teenager. Maybe a second cousin? Perhaps someone's partner? Two.
"My mama," Mrs George says. One.
Regina takes a deep breath, takes her hand out of Cady's to pull her into a side hug, and says "My girlfriend."
Yelling erupts in the dining room.
"You're both spawns of the Devil himself!"
Crystal, Sadie, and Brian are clapping.
"Faggots!"
A fork is thrown- not at Regina or Cady, not really at anyone?
"How could this happen to us?"
Mrs George has enfolded both Regina and Cady in a hug.
"My beautiful granddaughter..."
Cady's shaking and Regina's trying to calm her down by tracing hearts on her back. It seems like hours before someone shouts "EVERYONE SHUT UP!"
Cady can't put a finger on the voice. She probably wouldn't be able to recognize even Regina's at this point.
"I won't have dykes in my family!"
She knows everyone hates her. They're all screaming and shoving and shouting and- did someone just throw something?
"You and your stupid little girlfriend are both going straight to hell!"
She's only aware of someone's arms around her and the sound of someone crying.
"We don't want any of you or your disgusting kind here."
Then someone yells and it all grows quiet except for the sobbing. Is it Regina's mom? Is it whoever got hit with the fork?
She opens her eyes. She honestly hadn't even realized they were closed. The crying is Regina's. And that's all it takes.
"Hey!" she yells. Regina tugs on her sleeve. "Ginny, it's alright. What's all you people's problems? She's the same girl you've always known, except, honestly, better. So she's dating a girl! That's a better choice than a scumbag man! She's the same loving, beautiful, talented, stunning niece or granddaughter or cousin or whatever she is to you that you knew before, okay? She's amazing. Regina is incredible. It's not her fault that she- well, no. It's not her fault that I got lucky enough for her to fall for me. So stop shouting and throwing stuff and being pissy bigots. We can go if you don't want us here. Honestly, it's our gain. You-"
"Cady," Regina says with more intensity, finally snapping Cady out of her angry rant.
"Are you alright?" she asks, awkwardly climbing off the chair she for some reason decided to stand on. No one in the room really knows what to make of her, except Crystal, who continues to cheer.
"Cady babe, you gotta calm down now," Regina says, her voice still as low.
"I'm calm. But I'm gonna kill someone."
"I'm not giving you any cuddles if you kill them."
"But-"
"No cuddles if you commit murder."
Cady nods and takes a deep breath. "Okay. You wanna go home?"
"Yes please."
"Okay." Cady puts an arm around her girlfriend's shoulder and leads her outside and to the car. She hates to drive. But she'll do it for Regina.
She'd do anything for Regina.

CADINA HEADCANONS ❤️🩷
- They love playing with each other’s hair! Cady especially loves braiding Regina’s hair, she’ll always fiddle with little strands of her hair when they’re next to each other and Regina never undoes the braids she makes, she lets them stay in her hair until the day ends. Regina loves combing through Cady’s hair and twirling little bits of it with her finger when Cady’s preoccupied with doing something else. Cady can be writing an essay or doing math worksheets and Regina will be standing behind her so that she can use her fingers as a comb for her hair.
- Regina loves cheese fries, and she usually gets them for lunch if they’re available. It’s pretty well known that no one is allowed to touch her food, but Cady is an exception! Regina doesn’t mind letting Cady sneak a few fries onto her plate, and sometimes she even orders extra so that Cady will be able to get a bigger portion.
- It’s hard for Regina to verbally say ‘I love you’, especially in the early stages of her relationship with Cady, and instead she shows her affection through gifts. Cady is showered with so many presents that she’s physically unable to keep track of all of them. If Cady shows even a little bit of interest in something (“Oh, that teddy bear is so cute!”), Regina will have that item wrapped up and ready for her before she can even finish the sentence.
- Regina loves dressing Cady up! She brings her out to malls regularly and finds a lot of joy in seeing Cady switch through all the different outfits she’s picked out. If Cady ends up liking any outfit Regina gave her to try on, she’ll buy it for her.
- Cady borrows Regina her mathlete jacket one day and Regina just never actually returns it. Regina wears it frequently at home, and when Cady’s scent starts to fade away from it, she’ll just bring it back to Cady’s house for a few days before taking it back.
- Post canon, Cady and Regina continue to wear matching necklaces! Regardless if they use the ones they had in canon or if they get a new pair, they’ll still have matching necklaces.
- Regina’s back acts up a lot, and Cady is always the first to notice when Regina looks like she’s in pain— so, she’s always fussing around her to help her find seats or to hold and support her! Cady also massages Regina’s back often to help with the pain.
Thank you for asking! 🫶💖

“Kiss me.” Regina murmured, twirling Cady’s fingers between her own.
“What?” The sudden request caught Cady off guard, and for a moment she felt like her heart was going to pop like a balloon.
“I said,” Regina’s voice whispered back to her, sending a hot chill down her entire body. Cady was surprised she hadn’t completely folded over and collapsed. “Kiss me.”
Cady didn’t need to be told again.
(Cady meets Regina at a party after months of not seeing her. They play spin the bottle and end up together in a closet, alone.)
New Cadina fic up <33 thank you for reading as always! Happy Mean Girls (2024) day! 🫶
