Is It Really THAT Bad?

Dr. Seuss is no stranger to cinematic adaptations, and even less of a stranger to animation. And whenever Seuss gets animated, you can typically expect good things, as opposed to when his work is live action, in which case you can expect…

Yeah…

Anyway, imagine the excitement people must have felt when the creative team behind Despicable Me and the writing team behind the underrated gem Horton Hears a Who got together to do a fresh new take on The Lorax! This was in Illumination’s heyday, before they ended up showcasing that they’re more interested in churning out cheap products for maximum profit, so there was plenty of hope that this could be good. Then came all the commercial tie-ins.

Now, this alone shouldn’t be indicative of the final product. Maybe stuff like this is just a bunch of suits horribly missing the point of the original story! Maybe the actual film will be better! Well… while the film was no flop, and while it certainly got a better reception than most of the films I’ve talked about here, the film was derided by many for being an extremely shallow and lacking adaptation that adds unneeded junk to a story that didn’t need it in such a way that ultimately dilutes the message. It turns a story that operated on shades of gray and turned it into a cartoonish spectacle that would make even Captain Planet blush. Not helping was the rabid fanbase on Tumblr who shipped the Once-ler with… himself… or Jack Frost… forever tainting the film in the eyes of those on the internet.

Things got so bad eventually even the [REDACTED] Critic reviewed the film in his usual over-the-top, accentuate the negative style, and as some people still treat his word as gospel, this has most likely colored the perception of the film. So while it’s certainly not to the same level of infamy as the usual subjects of Is It Really THAT Bad? I still wanted to put this movie on here and ask one simple question:

How ba-ah-ah-ad can it be?

THE GOOD

So let me just get it out of the way: the movie’s villain song, “How Bad Can I Be,” legitimately is awesome and is frankly one of the best villain songs ever. No, I’m not kidding. It’s just a fun, rocking number with some neat visuals, and while it’s a shame the cut rock opera-esque “Biggering” is probably the better song, this one is definitely more fun and meme-worthy. Shake that bottom line!

Now, the casting is, for the most part, pretty fantastic. Minor characters like the grandma played by Betty White are a lot of fun, but really, the main piece of awesome casting is Danny DeVito as the titular Seuss creation. DeVito as the Lorax is just so incredible, perfect, and inspired that it boggles the mind how anyone could possibly come up with such amazing casting.

As far as antagonizing forces in the film go, the Once-ler’s awful, vile family are enjoyable in a “love to hate” sort of way. While it’s certainly kind of iffy that they felt the need to give the Once-ler more of an excuse for his actions beyond just simple greed, it isn’t so bad that what they came up with was familial pressure. In fact, they’re actually much better at antagonists than O’Hare, the actual villain of the film, and the fact the movie give him so much focus despite having such fascinating characters that would have had a really great thematic purpose; hell, they should have been the rulers of Thneedville instead og O’Hare! There’s so much untapped potential with these, quite frankly, very interesting characters.

I guess I should say the Once-ler is a pretty decent character in and of himself, but he very much suffers from the same problem the Jim Carrey Grinch does – he’s a good, enjoyable character in his own right, but he’s not a very good Once-ler. In fact, he at points borders on “in name only” territory. Still, he does have a pretty solid arc, and that villain song slaps, so… I think he’s solid, and Ed Helms does a good job voicing him.

THE BAD

Jon Lajoie, while in character as his misogynistic moron rapper MC Vagina, said this:

When I first heard this lyric, I didn’t understand it… but his words were a prophecy, because that is, in all honesty, the plot of this film. Our flavorless protagonist Ted really just wants to get the Truffula trees back so he can get into the pants of the local smoking hot redhead hippie, Audrey. It gets to the point where Ted’s motivations are so boring and shallow that Audrey actually would have made a far more interesting and compelling protagonist, seeing as she already has an inexplicable knowledge of the trees and cares about nature. When they already changed so much in the story I don’t see why they couldn’t just make the protagonist a girl while they were at it. As it is, she barely has any presence and feels like a waste, which becomes all the more awful when you know she’s being played by a stunt casted Taylor Swift instead of an actual voice actor or even an actor period. At least Ted is Zac Efron, an actual actor, though he doesn’t do a particularly good job himself.

Then we have our villain, O’Hare. O’Hare has all the subtlety of a Captain Planet villain but none of the cheesy goodness and fun. Sure, Rob Riggle does some good delivery and gives O’Hare some memetastic moments, and sure, his selling of canned air is oddly prescient of things that happened in real life in India (though technically President Skroob Spaceballs beat him to the punch by a few decades) but it doesn’t really redeem O’Hare from being an excessively weak villain who is shoehorned into the plot solely to turn the story into a black and white morality tale. It… doesn’t work at all. What also doesn’t help is that O’Hare has an absolutely repugnant character design, looking like if Edna Mode got mangled by a sixteen wheeler and left in a ditch on the side of the road.

Finally, this movie just doesn’t really respect the story to any great degree. As mentioned above, it waters down a story that presented arguments from both sides and, while still ultimately showing the Once-ler to be wrong and shortsighted, did have him make some valid points. Here, the story is presented as there being a clear cut good and evil in a horrendously unsubtle and unpalatable way. Yes, we get that extreme deforestation and overuse of resources is bad, you don’t need to beat us over the head with it. It doesn’t help that the film also crams in a bunch of cringeworthy pop culture humor that really doesn’t add much to the story; say what you will about the anime scene from Horton, at least there was a bit of substance and reason for it. Having characters sing the Mission: Impossible theme is just making a reference for the sake of making a reference.

Is It Really THAT Bad?

So I’m gonna say that I don’t particularly find this movie to be good, per se. It’s very dumbed down and more than a little undermined by the various brand tie ins. It is a poorly executed black and white morality tale that was crafted from a very deep and engaging piece of children’s literature, and on that level, I don’t think this movie works even a little bit. Still, there’s some enjoyment that can be mined from this, particularly from some of the more so bad it’s good moments, as well as DeVito’s performance and some actual good moments of story and character. There’s some stuff to like here if you dig a bit, but really, I don’t think you really should have to do a deep dig into The Lorax to get some enjoyment.

Overall, I wouldn’t really say this movie is totally bad, but it’s definitely not good, either; it veers more into the territory of “so bad it’s good,” which is a shame but also kind of refreshing. It’s definitely an interesting film to talk about, and there are a few things about it that work, but ultimately it’s not enough to really raise the film to the level of the classic animated Seuss adaptations or even to the level of Horton. At its best, it’s okay, and at its worst, it actively undermines its own messages. I think the 6.4 it has is pretty fair… maybe a bit too fair, if I’m being honest. I’d give it something like a 5.7 or 5.8.

Again, it’s not the worst thing ever like some might tell you; hell, the adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas Illumination would go on to make is probably a worse movie. But it still doesn’t really do anything that adds to the story its telling, and it ultimately comes off as saccharine, forgettable childish fluff. It’s really a harmless movie, but it’s still probably gonna grate on anyone who holds the original story in high esteem. The {REDACTED] Critic was a bit hyperbolic in his review, but I do think he was right in principle. This movie feels like a calculated, corporate adaptation meant to be as inoffensive and marketable as possible much like every Illumination film post-Despicable Me. And if there’s one thing The Lorax shouldn’t be, it’s “inoffensive and marketable.”

Original Story Idea

My first Story Idea on here, though it's actually number 18 in my notes. Hope you find this interesting.

For future reference, these are all gonna be probably a very rambly and full of things that I've gone back and added later on.

These are also super bare bones since I'm trying to get ideas out before I lose them. If people enjoy this, maybe I'll post more. Maybe I'll post more anyway. Idk.

Title?: Mother's Garden

For a webcomic or manga? Setting: Anime-like high school, you know the drill.

Main Character Boy - Juno (Roman goddess of mothers and family. He was Mother's favorite, and she was grooming him to be the next "Mother" before he left. Mother genuinely loves him, and either she gave him this name, or he named himself that, in honor of her)/Something else (a code name/the name he uses for interaction with the outside world) Not sure what his real name is yet.

Main character dude is school pretty boy

General shoujo shenanigans ensue

Girls chase him all over the school and constantly ask him out and generaly treat him like (Komi-san) a god, but he's good natured about it and a good dude all around

A Shoujo Shenanigan - Confession

"You're are a good person Juno." Girl-with-a-crush-on-him #17 says. A bright smile on her face as she confesses.

Juno looks down at her, her short brown pigtails bound with pretty orange ribbons. She's got warm brown eyes, and looks at him as she speaks, which is more than most of the girls he's caught the attention of can claim. All in all, she's cute. He knows that she's smart too, since she's in the same advanced science class with him. (Add more stuff about 17's background that Juno shouldn't realistically know just from being her classmate)

Honestly? It wouldn't be the worst decision to actually go out with her. He knows her quite well after all.

Too bad she doesn't know anything about him.

Juno thinks to himself, a sad and wistful smile on his own face.

'She thinks I'm a good person.'

He shakes his head.

"I'm sorry, but I can't go out with you."

'No. I'm not. Not even a little.'

She really doesn't know him at all.

Other Shojou Shenanigans

The girls constantly try to pull him into shenanigans to get his clothes off, but no one can ever make him take off his shirt.

There's a reason for that.

He's got an extensive tattoo on his back from when he was part of an assassination organization called Mother's Garden.

It took in children and gave them a home and a family. All it asked for in return was undying loyalty

MC boy is probably the only one ever to get out and try to live a normal life.

Eventually though, his past catches up to him. He was their best agent, and had to do an impossible mission to qualify for escaping (they thought he would die, and if he didn't he deserved his freedom [like John Wick])

A Family Visit

Some of his "Brothers and Sisters" come looking for him (though NOT at Mother's behest)

[They all have number names] holds a hand out, an offering of peace, perhaps. Juno is a still as looks at his "Older Brother" from where they sit, across from each other, on the floor.

"Come home little brother." he pleads. "Mother misses you."

"If she wants me back, she can come here herself and get me." Juno remarks calmly.

He's said it once and he'll say it again (although he's starting to get tired of repeating himself).

He's not going back.

A younger girl than him and [Older Brother's number] seethes at his back. She had been grinding her teeth the whole duration of this mission. He could read it in her body that she was new.

"How dare you speak of Mother with such disrespect! I should cut out your tongue!" She nearly screams.

Juno can't escape a slightly amused exhale under his breath. This girl? This child? The very thought is laughable. (He almost wants to see her try, but he'd probably end up being mean to her and cut off an arm or something. The Gardeners would be able to put it back on of course, but they'd probably use it as a lesson in discipline. He'd been lucky enough to only ever have lost a finger, and that one was mostly his fault anyway, and against Mother so...)

As if sensing his mirth at her "threat" the red-haired "Little Sister" growls at him and brandishes a weapon.

This...is taking it too far. They are in his home, his quiet, lovely sanctuary (a garden of his very own), and this one dares raise a blade to him? He wonders for a moment if he should kill her (she may be a Child, but most of them know better than this).

Sensing the coming danger, even if the little one doesn't, someone else takes action.

An older Sister steps close to the Child (and he's decided that she is a Child, to him anyway, regardless of her actual designation) and backhands her across the face. The redheaded child looks up at the other girl with wide eyes, a reaction more of surprise than of pain.

"Mind your tongue, little sister, or it will be you who looses the ability to speak. You know not of who's presence you are in. We are in our Brother's Garden, and you will show the proper respect and reverence to Juno."

Juno senses a shift in the crowd. Ah. So only a few of them actually knew who he was when they came here. Though, glancing around out the corner of his eyes, he can tell that some of them suspected. (Hm. He'd kind of liked the anonymity. Oh well. What's done is done.)

Logistical and World Building Stuff for Understanding

Members of Mother's Garden's names are written as: Big/Little Sister/Brother # in full

Informal is just their number when speaking of them, and as Little or Older Sister/Brother when speaking to them

Those younger and who have not yet completed their training are refered to as 'Child' or 'Children' (for plural)

Calling a 'Sibling' a 'Child' is an insult to their skill

Being a 'Child of X' denotes what you were trained for after the basics in combat. You can also specialize in something

'Children of the Green' become 'Gardeners' (a nickname people have come up with, they tend to the Garden, keep it healthy and strong. I might replace all these with flower names though, and what those flowers can add to a garden) and learn how to use incredibly advanced healing tech that can reattach limbs and add biometrics and really good prosthetics

'Children of the Black' are trained in stealth and become 'Nightshade'

'Children of the Pink' are trained to teach the children non-combat related skills like languages and the kinds of things you learn in school, and maybe dance or extra stuff?

'Children of the Blue' are trained to gather info

There is only one 'Golden Child'. They are chosen to be the next 'Mother' when the time comes that the Mother decides that they are ready, or when he or she dies

There is only one 'Silver Child'. They are next in line to become Mother ONLY if something happens to BOTH the Golden Child and Mother. Once a Golden Child becomes Mother, they can choose a new Golden and Silver child, though it is often that the Silver Child goes on to become the Golden, and someone new is chosen as Silver

(Being the Silver Child to the Golden one sometimes breeds resentment, but all Children must pit the good of the Garden before their own ambition or feelings. Only Bad Children feel resentment after all.)

The 'Eldest' are the ones who teach the younger children how to be 'Children of X'

They would introduce themselves as 'I am Brother/Sister #, Eldest son/daughter of [color]'

It'd been almost three months since you'd fed from Yoongi. His heart ached at your silent treatment of him. He'd smashed his phone after a month of you ignoring his calls and messages. He was a mess, blonde hair now showing the roots, eyes adorned with deep heavy purple bags from lack of sleep. The worst was that he'd wracked his brain for possible ideas on what he'd done wrong. He always came up with the same idea; you hadn't really loved him. Sure you'd begun dating under the rule that it was only so you could feed from him. But something had changed in you, some odd weeks later you'd taken less of his blood. Only feeding from him every Sunday, you still came around though often times just to hang out, go out, and sleep.

It was no wonder he'd grown accustomed to your presence in his apartment. It was during a feeding you'd taking a bit too much, so much so he'd weakly had to push you away as he pressed the silver ring on his finger into your arm. His barely coherent mind caught the sizzle from the silver making contact with your skin before you pulled away. Lips stained red, eyes wide once a beautiful shade of brown now glowing carmine. It faded in seconds your eyes quickly darting over his somewhat unconscious form lips trembling as your tongue wrapped around the abundant apologies fleeing your being. Your tongue felt heavy in your mouth as you realized what you'd done. You'd fled after sealing the wound and that was the last he'd seen of you.

Yoongi after so much time had made up his mind, he'd go to your house and get you to speak to him. He deserved an explanation, that was the least you could do. So he pulled on a jacket and headed out. His mind was so busy he'd made it there faster than he anticipated; and now stood before the door to the giant Victorian. A heaviness he hadn't felt before suddenly sat atop his shoulders with feet cemented to the ground. His game plan had been simple, show up, get an explanation, make up and then leave. Simple right? Except now it didn't seem like it. His heart hammered in his chest reminding him that he was in front of a house filled with vampires and he was very much human. So human in fact it took him promptly five minutes to finally notice that Jimin had been sitting just outside the front door. A small hesitant smile lining his lips that could turn any hetero man in an instant.

"Jimin, how long have you been there?"

"Long enough besides I knew you would come around sooner or later."

"Did you foresee this moment?"

"No, I'm just good at guessing games; and you forget I'm a half-blood. We don't get fancy powers like the pure bloods."

"Then how could you possibly know I was going to be over today? I'm here to talk to _____."

"I didn't. I assumed you would but I don't think it wise for you to be here."

"Why?"

"You do remember that you're human right? I mean how can one not realize their own mortality."

"Of course I know I'm human what does that have to do with _____? Is there something you're not telling me?"

"Hyung would kill me if he knew what I was doing. Lets take a little walk and while we're at it how about we have some story time."

"I'm not up for your crap right now. As your hyung I want to know where _____ is."

"In human years of course but I'm way older than you. Born in the 1400's, so that would make me a hyung by default no?" Yoongi sighed heavily watching as the young vampire stood, dusting off his jeans and casually walking down the steps.

"Your not allowed to see _____."

"Why not."

"She's gone on a rampage. So Hoseok had to lock her up to keep her safe."

"What do you mean by rampage?"

"You see pure bloods and half bloods differ only slightly. Half bloods are always from a vampire mother and human father. Pure bloods have both vampire parents except all vampire females are half bloods and all if not most males are pure bloods. Thus creating a pure blooded vampire such as Hoseok, and Jin. Namjoon and I are half blooded born from vampire mothers and human fathers. We're born with no special power, our fangs are shorter and appetite can be quenched with both human food and blood."

“So then what is _____?"

"She's a rare type of vampire. One of the few female pure blooded vampires in all existence."

"I don't understand just how many pure blooded female vampires are there?"

"In Korea, just two including _____. On the world, about 40 give or take."

"That number seems surprisingly low."

"Oh it is. The Vampire court usually keeps count of how many vampires consummate and spawn children. Those vampires belong to a smaller group called a coven and even smaller more family oriented clans. Our clan has tried our very best to keep _____ away from the watchful eyes of the Vampire Court."

"But why?"

"Pure blooded females are stronger in every manner. They'd easily outnumber vampire males 7 to 1 just like human females. Except instead of oppressing them like you humans do the vampire court eliminates them the day after their birth." Yoongi visibly recoils at the thought of killing babies, babies whom haven't done a single bad thing in their lives.

"It seems extreme to most and many clans are trying to fix this issue but we're not a democracy. Our entire existence is thanks to the monarchy, but just because they are stronger doesn't mean that they come without faults. _____ was born during a time where most were afraid to find out that their child was a female. We'd had some incidents where pure blooded females rampaged destroying entire towns and cities; so the court declared all female pure blooded babies be eliminated thereafter."

"So then how is _____ alive." Yoongi asked as he followed Jimin around the house and towards the forested area out back.

"_____ and I are distant relatives, hence the surname Park. Her mother was actually related to mine by some way or form. When her parents conceived they felt her automatically. Strange thing at that to be able to feel your child when she's so little just barely forming; but her mother did. So she reached out, and Hoseok came to stay with _____’s original clan keeping Namjoon and I updated. ____’s mother feared her daughters well being that she couldn't even see a doctor. So Hoseok had one brought in, one he knew could be trusted. That's when we met Jin. He'd stayed until _____ was born, unfortunately her mother died during childbirth. Her father had already agreed that Hoseok would take her and raise her as his own just like he'd done for Namjoon and I. Except he made Hoseok promise to fulfill his final wish."

"I don't even want to ask what that was."

"He asked Hoseok to burn down her estate. The rest of the clan was fine dying in the fire if it meant that _____would live. Hoseok gave us all a choice, die with the rest of _____ clan, keep this secret and stay in his clan or run with the fear that he'd find us and kill us if we ever mentioned her true heritage. It was a simple answer for all three of us; we'd been so enamored with her that we couldn't leave."

"Still doesn't answer how she went on a rampage." Yoongi pointed out.

"Your a fool to think that your special, but more a fool am I to not understand just how special you are to her. She's had human lovers before, and is the reason why we've chosen to only feed off animals. I've seen her slaughter entire towns because of her hunger for human blood. We keep her off it for her own safety; and she's been pretty good about it for a long time now. It isn't until she met you that she's begun to degenerate."

"Why's that?"

"Because you are her mate. The universe put you out in the world to be with her or be the end of her. All beings have a mate, human senses just aren't as fine tuned as the supernaturals. The day you met she knew, Hoseok made it so that she never went unescorted anywhere. We knew she snuck out just not where to, or who to. We knew she was feeding off something just not what exactly. She was always freshly cleansed smelling of fruits. Yet recently there was a stench that clung to her. Something foul and so pungent it would linger festering until the day she came home. Blood staining her clothes, tears clinging to her lashes and that crazed look in her eyes we'd all recognized."

"And that's why you locked her up."

"No, she asked us to. She begged us to do it, clung to Hoseok until he agreed. She's been here ever since."

"She chose this?"

"She did this for you, you are her mate just as she is yours. She'd do anything to keep you safe even from herself."

"Can I see her, I mean is it okay for me to see her?"

Wow, people really went ham in the notes of this post

I thought I wouldnt get a response buuuuut surprisingly I did, so its only fair that I respond back now

This response is to @super-ana-maria specifically

NaruSaku had a chance, Kishimoto said in an interview afte chapter 700 that he did not knew with who Naruto should end up with Sakura or Hinata.

Show me proof, the only time he mentions NaruSaku having a chance is when he said he once considered whether or not to CHANGE his original intended ending and make NaruSaku canon instead, he thought against it and stuck to his original plan. It was just a thought that crossed his mind because of popularity, not because he himself wanted it. If he did, why would he go against his own wife who wanted NaruSaku? clearly his opinion on which pairing to make canon was far different from hers and everyone else at the studio who also wanted NaruSaku. Kishimoto ignored ALL of them. If it were ever a serious consideration from him he would have discussed that with them the way he told voice actors early on in the anime that SasuSaku would be together in the end.

Heres snippets to back up everything I mentioned

Read the bottom paragraph, Kishimoto explains that Hinata and Naruto were always intended to be married from the start, NaruSaku was never set in his mind.

I know people say he contradicts himself here saying from the middle he decided NaruHina but then another interview he says from the beginning but that doesnt mean hes lying one way or the other, maybe he decided NaruHina early on but wasnt concrete set on it until the middle, what he says afterwards solidifies that theory

From the middle of the story? Hm! What sealed this decision for you? I think what made me realize it was partly because, if you really look back and think about it, Hinata always supported and acknowledged Naruto, even before Master Iruka. She had the ability to see beyond his reputation and see the true person inside. I think I started realizing that they were meant to be.

So it pretty much falls in line with what I said, he had the idea early on but he didnt realize they were meant to be until the middle of the story, which would explain why it had so little development in the beginning.

SasuSaku however never had this issue and every interview about them has been consistent, Kishimoto and the VAs both say SasuSaku was decided during the early stages of the anime and it shows as out of all the couples they’ve had the most focus out of all of them, even the MCs.

Unfortunately I cant find the proper source to this but this is still basically what was said. There was a time he considered NaruSaku but decided against it because making her fall inlove with Naruto at this point would make her a terrible woman, which makes sense because she’d only change her feelings after Naruto became the village hero. That wouldnt feel very genuine and come off very shallow. Sakuras heart has always belonged to Sasuke, she was devoted to him even after he chose to walk down the path of darkness. So to suddenly have her fall for Naruto after being so devoted to Sasuke once he became a hero would make her seem like a terrible woman. She only loves Naruto now that hes a hero, not when he was a nobody. This wouldnt feel like love, it would feel like a rebound and alot of people wouldnt like it because of the message it’d send.

Imagine you rejected a nice guy who was a loser and everyone hated him thats been pining for you since you were kids. But you never had any interest in him but instead liked someone else. You love this guy for years even when he goes down a dark path you stay devoted to them up till your teens and continue to only see the nice guy as your friend. Suddenly he becomes very successful and everyone loves and respects him now and hes no longer a loser. Now you suddenly see him differently and decide you love him now instead of the other guy you've loved all these years

Wouldnt you think that looks pretty shallow? doesnt that send the wrong message? you’ve never been interested in this guy UNTIL he became successful, now you suddenly realize you love him. Its exactly what Kishimoto said, it would make Sakura a terrible woman.

Naruto told his father that Sakura was his girlfriend, in the 4th databooks entry one on Sakura it was stated that she waa conflicted emotionaly between Sasuke and Naruto.

Read the paragraph of the first photo I mentioned, he says he intentionally sprinkled little NaruSaku nuggets as a red herring, which was successful because many people fell for it despite seeing Sakura still being wholeheartedly devoted to Sasuke.

Prior to being a sasusaku fan, this is my OTP not NaruSaku, I’m a Naruto fan first of all and the fact that Naruto did not pay any attention to Hinata(the girl confessed her love and he forgot about it), Kushina wanted for her son to be somebody like her(Sakura is like her, Minato said it) and Naruto convinced Sai, that he loves Sakura and Sai guilt tripped her into a fake confessed, only for later on in Naruto the last, *cought* Hinata the last *cought*, for all of this to be nothing more then a lie and him turning into a scumbag, for the line that he told Sakura: “I hate people that lie to themself”, well Naruto lied to himself for what 7 years?

I wont argue with you here, even I think that was bullshit. Dont get me wrong Im not really defending NaruHina because personally idgaf about the ship and really dislike her thanks to that god awful ending and how SP is trying to shove her down our throats and try to turn her character into someone she isnt. So Im not defending NaruHina Im just pointing out the facts. NaruSaku NEVER had a chance, unless you wanna count that brief consideration a chance.

The anime ended up with ….a wedding, like a cheap SHOUJO story, in which the girl gets everything she was. So saying that Naruto is a shoujo story is basically the truth.

The manga ended in a better note with Naruto being the Hokage and living the life he wanted.

Again I wont argue there, thank god Kishimoto ended the story with the Boruto movie, something he actually WROTE and wanted to make. Because if he had ended Naruto with The Last, that would have been one of the worst endings in Shounen history, a Shounen literally turned Shoujo for its ending.

Dont get me started on how the anime ended on a fucking wedding we already got in the movie and not the ACTUAL FUCKING FINAL CHAPTER OF THE MANGA.

How TF do you animate 699 chapters worth of content and then literally skip the final fucking chapter 700 in favor of a fuckin novel rehashing an already shown wedding. Tell me how that makes any fuckin sense, it doesnt, its like SP forgot they were animating a Shounen and thought they were doing a Shoujo at the end. And people have the nerve to complain the manga ending was bad.

Thank Kishimoto for the manga and staying focused on what Narutos ACTUALLY about. The anime spit on Narutos legacy and basically turned from the Shounen about Naruto, to a Shoujo about Hinata.

Dare somebody to tell me Im wrong, you know Im not.

Tales of Zestiria Isn’t Bad. You Guys are Just Mean.

I am honestly tired of seeing posts about how Zestiria is just objectively The Worst Game In the Tales Series EVER. Let me tell you about a little game called Tales of Legendia

disclaimer: I love Legendia

Does Zestiria have problems? Yes! Does it also have good parts? Also yes! Can you dislike it for the problems that you find unbearable? Yes again! Does that make it A Bad Game that No One Should Enjoy? NO!

I would have to say that there are worse Tales games. Games with bigger problems. Games like Legendia.

second disclaimer: I haven’t played all the Tales games, especially the ones before Symphonia or on handhelds so I’m going from what I know

Do people still remember Legendia? It is trapped forever on the PS2 (Namco please add to current-gen stores for digital download thnx) so maybe not. It was the game that came out after Symphonia and like four-ish month before Abyss. It was developed by a different team than both of those games.

It’s... interesting.

Symphonia was the first completely 3D game and added a lot to the series. 3D battle stages! Costumes! Encounters you can see on the field! It was all super cool!

Legendia... did none of that.

Also we went from characters that look like this:

I’m sure there are people who like them. The models are fine for comedic moments. They are... less fine for serious moments. The camera is also pretty much always pulled really far back as well. You’re not going to be getting any close emotional shots here. (Excepting anime cutscenes of course)

Another big tick against Legendia was the battle system. Just... take a look:

We’re back to a 2D battle plane with everyone on top of each other. There was some enemy weight system that honestly I never understood. And of course every is saying the same three lines over and over. (That said, Senel was punching people before it was cool JUDE.) ALSO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS STILL SUCK.

The story was okay, but the ending was honestly like they copied and pasted the Symphonia ending at the last second. It was a little weird not gonna lie.

And then Abyss came out 4 months later with a bunch of new features (FREE RUNNING!!) and the best story in the series and yeah. Legendia kind of got trampled.

I would put Zestiria (returning to the original topic) above Legendia because the Zestiria combat is fun to play (even with the spastic camera) and you spend a LOT of time in there. Armatization was cool but the rock-paper-scissors thing with the artes meant you couldn’t stay in it forever and your Mystics Artes were limited to your individual characters for a while.

Zestiria was fairly weak in the story department (gonna do An Essay on that next), just like Legendia. But BOTH games had really great characters. (Jay and Norma are both amazing and Senel’s pretty cool for a MC. He was doing the anti-hero thing before Luke. On the Zestiria end, Rose, Zaveid, and Edna are all characters I would die for.) Both games had amazing music. Is it so hard to believe that Zestiria can be loved for just being ‘good’? It’s not ‘The Best Tales Game Ever Made’ like Berseria Lie it’s Abyss I mean what But not every game has to be.

I love both games a lot.

In summary: play Legendia for great scenes like this and this and because Jay and Norma deserve not to be forgotten. Play Zestiria for the characters and the hype music moments. And if you don’t like either game? Leave the people who DO like them alone.

1) How old were you when you first starting writing fanfiction? 12/13 it was between 7th and 8th grade and it was all anime fanfiction

2) What fandoms do you write for and do you have a particular favourite if you write for more than one?Far Cry 5, RDR2, Assassin’s Creed, DC, Marvel, Fallout, Skyrim, Preacher. Far Cry 5 is definitely my favorite to write for though

3) Do you prefer writing OC’s or reader inserts? Explain your answer.Personally, I prefer OC’s, with OC’s I can build their character, give them a personality and growth. I like shaping the character as the world changes based on their actions

4) What is your favourite genre to write for?Action or romance unless I totally misread that question

5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi-chaptered stories, which would it be and why?The Devil Has Come!!! It was my first in the Far Cry fandom and it’s my baby. I love all the characters and the world that I’m building. It’s got action, romance, some twists, it’s exciting

6) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?If we’re talking things that I’m currently writing and enjoy writing then I guess Bridges only because it’s the same characters as TDHC just in an AU form so I’d survive without it.

7) When is your preferred time to write?Night, 10pm on basically.

8) Where do you take your inspiration from?Everywhere really? TV shows, movies, video games, other fics

9) In your xxx fic, what’s your favourite scene that you wrote?So far my favorite scene that I wrote in TDHC that has been published was either the confrontation with Rook in Chapter 11 or Jacob finding Sarah in the hotel in Chapter 8. They were both really fun to write.

10) In your xxx fic, why did you decide to end it like that? Did you have an alternate ending in mind?Well it hasn’t been ended yet, but there were two possible endings that I was originally considering. I’m not saying much more other than the ending that I went with is gonna hurt me when I eventually get to it.

11) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?Not after posting but I have amended stories due to criticisms. If I’m a bit worried about a particular scene I’ll share the doc with my best lady @farcryfuckmeup and get her opinion. She usually points out things that aren’t great and I go from there. She’s the closet thing to a beta reader that I have.

12) Who is your favourite character to write for? Why?Sarah!!! She’s my best girl and I love her personality and attitude. In terms of canon characters though I’ve been writing some stuff from Arthur Morgan’s pov and that’s been really fun too. I really love playing around with his sense of self and morality.

13) Who is your least favourite character to write for? Why?I don’t have one yet? We’ll see how the future plays out there. It might be Ethan Seed but I’ve never written stuff for him so I’m not 100% sure.

14) How did you come up with the title for the xxx? - You can ask about multiple stories.Almost every fic name is from a song. The Devil Has Come is from Blues Saraceno’s “The River”, Icarus is from Bastille’s “Icarus”, and I’m not sure where Bridges is from but I’m 90% sure it was a song. The series that TDHC and it’s connected stories are a part of is called Bottom of the River from Delta Rae’s “Bottom of the River”.

15) If you write OC’s, how do you decide on their names?I use name generators for modern characters or look up names with a specific meaning. If the character is from the past (ie cowboy times or pirate times) I look up names popular in that century. Sarah’s name I got by looking up popular names with religious meanings and Sarah was on the list.

16) How did you come up with the idea for xxx?I came up with the idea for TDHC by playing co-op with @farcryfuckmeup. It was originally supposed to be a crackfic based on the dumbshit we did in-game. Then in my desperation to pretend that the game didn’t end the way it ends I started coming up with ways it could have gone differently and thus my fic was born.

17) Post a line from a WIP that you’re working on.I have so many wips! I’ll do a few because I’m in a sharing mood.Fallout 4 WIP: “‘You don’t even use power armor, why did you steal so many?’”RDR2 WIP: “Valentine was a crap town with crap people and even crappier whiskey. It was tiny and smelled like mud and horse shit and something else that she was pretty sure was vomit.”Another RDR2 WIP: “Trouble was the bastard was clingy apparently as he was hot on Arthur’s heel.”

18) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?Yes, a few. I got bored or I decided to focus on other things. I do intend to one day finish them but who knows

19) Are there any stories that you’ve written that you’d really love to do a sequel to?The Devil Has Come!!! I can’t wait to write a sequel and I haven’t even finished the current fic.

20) Are there any stories that you wished you’d ended differently?Sometimes I wish I’d written a follow up to my judge fic Joseph and his Judge. I’m not totally sure if I like how it ended.

22) Do you have a story that you look back on and cringe when you reread it?My anime fics from middle school. It’s still posted and I won’t tell you what it’s called but every time I remember it a little part of me dies.

23) Do you prefer listening to music when you’re writing or do you need silence?Music mostly but it sometimes depends on the scene. For certain scenes I need silence but for the most part it’s music music music. I have playlists for all sorts of scene types.

24) How do you feel about writing smutty scenes?I love it, idk if I’m any good at it but I do like writing them.

25) Have you ever cried whilst writing a story?Yes, I’ve been writing some future parts of TDHC and I have cried a bit writing some of it.

26) Which part of your xxx fic was the hardest to write?The smut scene in Chapter 10 of TDHC, it was the first smut scene I’d ever published so I was really worried about that and kept rewriting it.

27) Do you make a general outline for your stories or do you just go with the flow?Bit of both I guess. There is a vague outline in my head but only for like the big events, everything in between is go with the flow shit.

28) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fanfiction?It’s not going to be an instant hit. When I first started posting works back in the day I was always so upset when I’d check the next day and see only like 12 people had read it.

29) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?Icarus :( It’s only a baby fic and it’s in a mostly dead fandom but I love it.

30) In contrast to 29 is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?No, I love all the attention my fics get.

33) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?I’ve gotten a few comments of analysis on chapters I’ve posted and honestly I love that so much. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing that someone not only read my fic but sat there and actually thought a lot about it.

34) What’s the harshest criticism you’ve gotten?Like I said before I haven’t gotten a lot of criticism, but I guess the harshest for me was when I was discussing a character that I had really started to like and my friend (who I was ranting at about him) asked me to honestly think about what he brings to the table. Like is he actually necessary or just a throwaway character that won’t bring much to the story? I ended up scrapping him and putting a nameless character in his place to fill a few of his scenes.

35) Do you share your story ideas with anyone else or do you keep them close to your chest?I share them with one (1) person and that person is my irl best friend @farcryfuckmeup. Everyone else has to wait until I post stuff I don’t want to spoil any big surprises.

36) Can you give us a spoiler for one of your WIP’s?It’s a chapter very far in the future for a fic I’m sure you can guess but I won’t outright say.“Against his better judgment, he reached out and grabbed the hysteric woman, tightening his grip against her struggling and pulling her into his lap. He wrapped her in a tight hug until she finally began to calm down, humming softly and running his fingers through blood-soaked hair.“

37) What’s the funniest story you’ve written?I haven’t written a lot of funny stuff. I mostly do angsty. But when I was in middle school a wrote a novel where I spent two paragraphs talking about my MC’s hair color and current outfit and I cackle every time I read it. 70 pages or pure cringe, it’s hilarious.

43) Has anyone ever guessed the plot twist of one of your fics before you posted it?@/farcryfuckmeup has but I don’t try too hard to keep secrets when she’s around

44) What is the last line you wrote?“John rolled his eyes and finished unbuttoning his shirt.”

45) What spurs you on during the writing process?This is cliche probably but the readers. I don’t want to leave someone waiting around for the next update forever. I also want to see how things play out myself so my own desire to see the finished product also helps.

46) I really loved your xxx fic. If you were ever to do a sequel, what do you think might happen in it?Again, going with TDHC for this. I am writing a sequel currently (I know it’s not done). It’s going to focus on a different character but Sarah will make appearances. I’m also working on a standalone sequel for her but that won’t be posted until the first sequel fic is complete.

47) Here’s a fic title - insert a made-up title. What would this story be about?I used a title generator: Hidden Midnight. It’s about a pair of idiots in love, one is a vampire so they can only meet at night and it’s very secretive. The human dies at the end.

48) What’s your favourite trope to write?Forced partnerships. I love it when two characters are forced into a partnership. One of them can’t fucking stand the other but slowly grows to like/love them in secret. If the chill one is in danger the annoyed one freaks the fuck out and does everything they can to get to their partner and afterwards claims they couldn’t care less what happened.

49) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?I don’t remember the name of it but I’m pretty sure it was a Supernatural fic. I think it was Destiel (don’t just middle school me) and a high school AU. I’m not 100% sure. It was either that or a Fairy Tail fic and I like to forget my anime days.

50) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?Angst. I love fluff and smut but in the end, I always go back to angst. It’s so much fun and there are so many ways to do it.

HajiKo Anime: Summer 2020

Previously I made a post where I talked about my first impressions of the Summer anime I’ve watched, now that the Fall season is getting closer, now it’s finally the time to give my final impressions of everything I watched this season.

(I wanted to make a custom thumbnail for this post like I did with the previous one but I gave up with the idea afterwards)

(Also, I had some of this post in draft for a while but on September 29th, I spent HOURS and I WROTE a lot of good shit before and for some god forsaken reason Firefox decided to crash. Everything I had written before is gone and I have not even saved at all since, I’m so god damn salty. Now you will never experience what have I written before and all I wrote now are just bare remains from what I last remember writing, I was so god damn salty but in the end the rewrite worked out well, I did the best I could to rewrite some of the same things I said before and I did some little changes and added new things so I was satisfied, I hope you can still enjoy the post.)

As usual, here’s the tier of everything I watched this season:

By the way, as of 2021 I think I might make only ONE tier for every anime I’m gonna watch that entire year, as I publish my first tier of the Winter season, I’ll be adding more visuals of the Spring anime and so on, even if I might get lost in finding the visuals as I edit my template, this is because I’ve been constantly making way too many standalone tiers for a single season FOR A YEAR, I bet I’ve must have been taking a lot of the website’s space for something very small and irrelevant.

TierMaker should have better options on whether the tiers your making are public or not, and I read the terms of services conditions, I’m kind of scared on what to do next with using TierMaker for doing these kinds of tiers, I can’t just find a random blank template and use GIMP.

Uzaki-chan: Aside from simply saying “This was a very good show, I had plenty of laughs” or something, the main thing I want to talk about isn’t so much in the show itself, but rather how Uzaki-chan herself, Hana Uzaki, has become a target of SJWs in one of the worst anime controversies ever, even worse than Goblin Slayer.

As for the series itself, I really liked it, I had plenty of good laughs and it was just fun to watch, and I’m really happy that season 2 is happening now too.

Fire Force: There is something about the feel of the show, these awkward long slow moments and stuff and everything else kinda drives me insane, but until the second half of the first season with the Adolla Burst and stuff, that’s where now I’m getting very intrigued in the plot, the worldbuilding, everything, and this season continues to expand the story and it gets even more interesting, and the animation can be really nice too.

Re:Zero season 2: Echidna is best girl, that’s it, that’s the review.

All jokes aside, I’m liking this season so far, it gets somewhat confusing but I’ll figure that out, and it’s strange that we’re only having the first half of the season this Summer and we will have to wait all the way to Winter 2021 for the series to continue, it’s a very Ufotable thing to do and hell, even Magia Record is still in production as of now.

Oregairu season 3: Let me give you a little bit of a retrospect: I honestly vaguely remember what even happened in the first two seasons, as I started watching this season, I started to remember at least one key moment from season 2 and even the characters, which I kinda feel like I like most characters, except Irohas is my least favorite, maybe Komachi too when she constantly says “kimochiwarui” but she’s not extremely annoying like Irohas. I still think how these last two seasons are visually impressive in contrast to the first season, that one’s painful to watch, the voice acting is particularly interesting too.

Now that the series is over, let me give my overall thoughts on the Oregairu series as a whole. The series overall isn’t a series I wouldn’t consider be a huge part of my life, I’m not hugely impressed with it but there are things I liked and I would still talk that I had seen the series, it’s kinda something.

Donkyuu Hentai HxEROS: This one’s the most conflicting ecchi series I’ve ever watched in my life. On the first episode, I was into it at first, but then I started to feel lukewarm about it, but then episode 5 was the one episode I got genuinely the most impressed, and the next few episodes have started to degrade on me, it was a complete 50/50 of a series to watch.

My biggest problem of the series is Kirara, her writing and just her overal existence, she’s the most painfully unlikeable main ecchi heroines I’ve ever seen in my entire life. On one hand, she looks cute, but boy, I fucking hate her so much, I can’t stand for how she is at all, I absolutely prefer her young lowkey pervert self from the flashbacks, she might even be the worst girl ever. If there’s any best girl in this series, it’d probably be the other HxERO girls like the Saitama branch teammates, the girls from the Toyko branch and even Chacha (And the shota (?) from the Toyko branch is best boy). The flashbacks are especially sad, it really hurts me how Enjo and Kirara’s happiness got taken away so god damn bad.

As someone who’s completely spoiled with full blown hentai instead of ecchi nowadays, I usually prefer girls written as perverts or something, someone who can be okay with what the MC does and what not, anyway, the other HxERO girls seem to be absolutely fine with doing the H-Energy and stuff, but Kirara is so intolerable to watch. Even Chacha and Dark Kirara (A hallucination reflecting Kirara’s young self dressed in a iliy outfit) encourage Kirara to be more honest with her feelings about Retto and try to bring her to her old self.

(I really hope this doesn’t sound sexist)

The animation was decent, the visuals looked nice but there are times the animation can be a little off, especially episode 11 which was awful, then there’s also the annoying censorship even the AT-X broadcast didn’t help, and by the way, the “H-Energy” version that comes out a week after the original episode premiere was not worth it at all, it only decensors some irrelevant parts, the steam and such, it doesn’t even decensor the boobs, thankfully the Blu-Rays are here to save the day.

I judge Kirara a lot which is my deal breaker with the series, but what about the story or the concept even? The concept of the story, the themes and everything seems okay, nothing really special about it that kinda makes up for the series being decent.

This isn’t the worst ecchi series I’ve seen in my life, but certainly the most mediocre, one that I felt it was truly frustrating to watch and I’m not even sure if I should make rank this as C or even D which I ended up on the former for the pros being the visuals and the concept being okay. Take me back to Winter 2020 with Ishuzoku Reviewers. Maybe I should have watched Peter Grill this season instead.

Honorable mentions:

BanG Dream Garupa Pico Ohmori: I gotta be real about the Garupa Pico series overall now, not just with Ohmori but with the first season as well.

To be brutally honest, I don’t really find humor in this series as much, though in some cases there are episodes that did make me laugh, I mean, the series is still entertaining to watch as it is but at the same time I’m not really impressed, it isn’t much of a constant laughing stock series as I wanted it to be, and never has been even with the first season to begin with.

Before the series came out, I had an argument with someone who hates the main Bandori anime series because of the “forced drama” and they called the Garupa Pico series “the good series,” it seriously frustrated me because the third season from this Winter was so good, it’s probably the best Bandori season yet because of the character interactions and it made me become a fan of RAS. I don’t hate the Garupa Pico series, it still has its charm, I like the visuals (I’m surprised that the Garupa Pico series are animated by Sanzigen as well) and I admire how the series is watchable on YouTube via the official Bandori channels, but in my opinion, this is probably like a 7/10 B rank series at best, it isn’t something that’s gonna stick and be a huge part of my life like the main series.

With that being said, I would probably like to go back to the Spring 2020 tier I made and would put Garupa Pico Ohmori on B in retrospect, but I’m still gonna keep it as it is because at the time I was really surprised for its sudden existence.

General overview and critiques of the overall Garupa Pico series aside, let’s talk about Ohmori for once, if there’s one thing I have to give huge thumbs up for is introducing RAISE A SUILEN and Morfonica and the series continuing to last for two-cours, one-cour for a short series can be such a waste, even better comedies like Girls’ Frontline Healing Chapter (I have something special to tell you about it below), I really like that the series is very long so I can watch all the misadventures for every band, but at the same time, even if RAS and Morfonica have finally been introduced, they’re still somewhat irrelevant and underused which makes me sad since Bandori 3 really made me a huge fan of RAS and I want to see more of them, and oddly enough, they probably can’t even bother trying to update the ending theme by including RAS and Morfonica, both in the visual and the song itself, if there’s gonna be a new Garupa Pico season in the next two years, hopefully RAS and Morfonica will become regular cast members. As for Morfonica, I have no idea and I don’t really know them much, I seriously need Bandori 4 to happen so it can introduce Morfonica and make me understand them.

As Joaquin Phoenix Joker said: “Comedy is subjective, Murray.”

Welcome to the Japari Park season 2: If there’s some things I have to complain about this second season is that I wish the series would continue to do these secret mystery Kako recordings during the credits like the first season had, and I wish they would stop doing these Friend trivia segments with non-existent Friends, the first season always did these segments with Friends who are actually featured in one episode or something, now that the series has been doing these segments with Friends that don’t even appear in the series, it makes these segments absolutely pointless.

Speaking of Kemono Friends, after the Welcome to the Japari Park series, who knows if the franchise’s anime future will live on given on how widely panned Kemono Friends 2 was. SEGA’s Chocotto Anime Kemono Friends 3 shorts have pretty much ended, I was actually eager on watching these shorts but they haven’t made any new short for a long time. What about 2021? Should we expect a Kemono Friends 3 anime? Probably not, and with the existence of the game with the same name, it’s gonna be extremely confusing whether this Kemono Friends 3 anime should be the third season of the main series or might be an adaptation of the game, whatever it turns out, I’d still watch it anyways because I want to continue to observe the Kemono Friends anime adaptations unfold, and I’d still be confident it would still be nowhere near as good as the first season with Tatsuki.

By the way, since September 16th, SEGA finally released not one, but FOUR new Chocotto Anime Kemono Friends 3 shorts after so long! (1, 2, 3, 4), I just happened to find that out as of the (re)writing of this, September 29th. My question is, what did it even take so long to make new shorts? One would assume is most likely COVID because that affected quite a lot of anime, but at least we finally got not one but four new videos of the Kemono Friends 3 shorts.

My Hero Academia: Make It! Do-or-Die Survival. Pretty strange for a new My Hero Academia OVA to come out this time.

Aggretsuko season 3. If there’s one thing I’d like to say about this season, or at least the last few episodes, it’s that this season has quite the darkest season finales for Aggretsuko I’ve ever seen.

Plans for Fall:

This was the weakest season of the year despite Uzaki-chan and Fire Force (Fruits Basket, Garupa Pico and Japari Park too but I don’t count leftovers), it’s a shame considering how this decade had started strong with quite some good shows and Summer has always been my favorite anime season, but the line-up isn’t as great as before, if Akudama Drive and Danmachi season 3 wouldn’t have been delayed if it weren’t for COVID, they would have made this season slightly better, but now that I think about it, it was for the best for them to get delayed because this Fall line-up is looking a million times better, hell, it’s looking to be the best season of the year!

Now, whenever I talk about the Fall anime season, we can’t forget the most important thing ever: My birthday! If you have no idea, I’ll probably remind you a billion times my birthday is coming soon, October 4th, and one of the things I always look forward the most is watching day 1 anime that come out in my birthday, but alas, I started to feel like I’m not looking forward to my birthday this year AT ALL, mainly because Venom Let There Be Carnage got delayed until June of 2021, and that really sucks so bad because THAT WAS MY ONLY CHANCE TO SEE A VENOM MOVIE IN MY BIRTHDAY, SOMETHING THE FIRST FILM SHOULD HAVE BEEN BECAUSE IT CAME OUT A DAY LATE! IT WOULD HAVE ABSOLUTELY TOPPED JOKER AS MY #1 BEST BIRTHDAY FILM EVER! My birthday gets even more depressing when there’s literally not a single anime that remotely interests me coming out in my birthday and most of the anime I’m the most excited for are coming out before and long after my birthday, the only choice I have is Talentless Nana, or Munou na Nana if you’d like to call the series but I like using the former, I watched the trailer of it and it was okay, not really impressed but might as well give it a shot in my birthday, if I didn’t like it, might as well rewatch the anime that came before it.

Anyways, enough talk about my birthday, let’s talk about my most anticipated Fall shows:

Akudama Drive - October 8th: Since the foundation of Tookyo Games, a new studio by Kazutaka Kodaka,and Kotaro Uchikoshi with artists like Rui Komatsuzaki and Shimadoriru, this anime by Pierrot was the #1 thing that got my most attention, and I can’t believe that we’re so close to the release! Though I SERIOUSLY wish this would come out on my birthday.

Danganronpa may be over but as long as there’s new projects with Kodaka and Komatsuzaki onboard, such as Akudama Drive and the upcoming Tribe Nine. Oh, and speaking of Danganronpa, guess what?... THERE’S GONNA BE AN AKUDAMA DRIVE AND DANGANRONPA COLLABORATION!!! (News provided by the official Akudama Drive Twitter account) Not only there’s gonna be illustrations by Rui Komatsuzaki but if the translations are correct, there’s gonna be more projects along the way! A Danganronpa and Akudama Drive collab is something I just never knew I needed in my life!

I’m absolutely calling it, this is definitely gonna be my AOTY, it may be based due to the fact that I love the Danganronpa franchise to death, but I’ve always had my eyes on this and I want to see it now!

By the way, I just realized something, there’s this project with visuals by Rui Komatsuzaki and Shimadoriru that I have yet to see some news of!

It’s not Tribe Nine, that game looks like a completely different beast on its own and it’s in collaboration with another project.

Then there’s also this other game that’s, quote:

Collaboration of the development team of Danganronpa and Spike Chunsoft. Kodaka actually started this project before his retirement of Spike Chunsoft. We imagine a kind of cyberpunk world from this art. Komatsuzaki designs the characters, Shimadoriru designs background, and Takada directs the sounds.

Okay, that sounds really cool, but I’m more interested in the one project with the Rui Komatsuzaki and Shimadoriru visuals, I want to know more about them!

Sure, the concept art may not represent what the final product might end up looking, but World’s End Club (Originally called Death March Club) and Akudama Drive live up to their concept art, so that’s something!

Speaking of Danganronpa, the 10th anniversary stuff was ABSOLUTELY LACKLUSTER, I legit expected there might have been surprise announcements or anything that said there’s a new Danganronpa installment, but nothing absolutely relevant came from it, the Danganronpa x Akudama Drive collab was the only good thing from it. This is what I get for setting my expectations way too high, well, maybe not too high, but still, come on.

(But at the same time, do I REALLY want a new Danganronpa without the staple creators on board?)

Girls’ Frontline Healing Chapter season 2 - October 7th: Girls’ Frontline isn’t my most played gacha game, a black sheep, probably the most blackest sheep since Granblue Fantasy, one I don’t heavily get invested to play like Fate/Grand Order, Azur Lane and even Arknights, though while I started playing Arknights at launch, I stopped around March because the game was very difficult and I lacked the resources, but I returned to the game in May after seeing my older sister starting to play Arknights. I returned to Girls’ Frontline because my Filipino friend started playing Girls’ Frontline around early May and he’s made quite a lot of insane progress in just 5 months, even I wouldn’t ever do that, but since September 28th, I uninstalled the game because I wanted to have some space to install Genshin Impact but at the same time I ended up giving on it too because it ran pretty slow for my phone even on the lowest settings and I almost had no storage left, I even tried installing the game on PC and I don’t know why but the game gave me last minute errors for some reason, so sacrifices had to be made for both Girls’ Frontline and Genshin Impact.

Anyway, enough talk with the gacha game side of things because I made quite a long un-spaced (?) paragraph, let’s talk about the GFL short anime series itself, even as a non-GFL player, I LOVED this series to death, hell, I was even lowkey sad when Healing Chapter ended, Madness Chapter, however... Not so much, we don’t talk about Madness Chapter. The biggest surprise I had when the series came out was that it came out in BiliBili with Chinese dub, hearing anime in Chinese dub is unheard of, I thought the series would be automatically in Japanese because the first trailer had an all-Japanese voice-over, but the Chinese dub was quite good, but then the Japanese dub finally came out--ON MY BIRTHDAY! on Japanese television (and BiliBili too). Well, that’s quite a lovely surprise, I managed to watch the JP dubbed premiere of Healing Chapter long before I went out with my family to have lunch and then go see Joker, it was the second 神映画 (Kami eiga - God film, I made that up) of the year, and my #1 was of course Avengers: Endgame. The JP dub of both Healing and Madness Chapter were very good too overall, it did some things better than CN and vice versa, even casting Persica’s JP voice which I really hope her seiyuu can be used again at some point, the JP broadcast of Healing Chapter also had these weird live-action segments of some dudes’ hands playing with the main character plushies doing random things... I don’t even know what they are or why they are, all I can say that they’re just pretty much fillers to fit the Japanese TV broadcast time limit.

I’m wasting quite a lot of time writing nonsense history of my experience with the Girls’ Frontline short anime series and let me get straight to the point of season 2, when the interview video was released, one of the animators said that they were working on season 2 and then the designs for AK-12 and AN-94 were shown, I’m of course hyped as hell for season 2! (Poggers) and, I don’t want to say this but because of COVID-19, I thought season 2 wouldn’t ever happen now, but it’s still alive and kicking and ready to be released! But there’s one MAJOR problem, apparently BiliBili is going to region lock the series! At first I wasn’t concerned about it for some reason, I had some misguided optimism that someone’s gotta have a VPN or do anything to try to upload the series on more accessible websites, but now the concern is growing bigger and bigger, but still let’s hope someone can still upload season 2 somewhere, I don’t want to see spoilers going around, even if I don’t follow a lot of Girls’ Frontline accounts which I should because sometimes I wouldn’t have ever found out about season 2.

Now I’m just seeing mostly stuff about Healing Chapter season 2, there’s one major question, should I expect Madness Chapter season 2 as well? As far as I know, there really hasn’t been any trailer for a potential season 2 or if it’s actually getting one at all, doesn’t seem like the series did well and I didn’t even care about it sometimes, which is great because Healing Chapter is far superior. But now that Madness Chapter may not get a second season, there’s also the question of what does M16′s Chinese VA mean by making the series “longer,” longer as in be a couple of minutes longer? Although 3-4 minutes is already a decent runtime, it’s not insanely short but I’m down if they’d make it at least a couple of minutes longer. Maybe making the series longer means that we can have a two-cour second season worth of Girls’ Frontline: Healing Chapter only? I would love for that to happen, but we’ll have to find out and see.

There are somethings I forgot to mention about Girls’ Frontline season 2, it’s aimed to be released on October 7th, which is surprisingly earlier than the first season’s release where it was late July. And October 7th being on Wednesday and I wish Girls’ Frontline season 2 would come out on my birthday, but oh well. I wonder if it’ll take about the same timeframe for the Japanese dub’s release, it came out on my birthday last year when the original Chinese dub came out in late July, so I might expect the Japanese dub of season 2 to come out in probably like Winter 2021 at best, we’ll see about that.

Even if I don’t religiously play Girls’ Frontline like I wanted to because I’m a big fan of guns, I wouldn’t mind playing Code Name Bakery, though. I may not fully understand the story in order but my Filipino friend would occasionally tell me spoilers and I don’t really mind that.

By the way, last year I made a shitpost video of Girls’ Frontline Healing Chapter but with Team Fortress 2 audio, now I finally made a new audio parody video but with a twist(ed metal)!

Osomatsu-san season 3 - October 12th: Just when I thought the future of the Osomatsu-san series would be over with the movie, but I’m glad my boys are still up and running! This is definitely gonna top Uzaki-chan as the better comedy of the year because Osomatsu-san has consitently given me a lot of laughs and delivers some really hilarious and bizarre moments.

Knowing that this is Osomatsu-san, wil it dare to even touch upon the topic of COVID-19 or something? There might be some scenes where the cast are doing a Zoom meeting, but they probably wouldn’t flat out say the name of the virus out loud, it’s very unlikely as I kinda find COVID-19 a somewhat sensitive topic and other media hasn’t or probably wouldn’t even try doing something about it.

Burn the Witch - October 2nd: I never really grew up nor care about Bleach, but I read the one-shot of Burn the Witch and I was intrigued by it, when the serialization was announced, I was excited because this series has potential, but there was a catch, this would be a short limited series for 4 chapters, so when I read the last chapter of the manga series, I was sad because the series has potential and it got wasted, but wait, it’s not entirely over yet, as this was only the “first season” and the manga series is getting a “second season.” Yeah, I have no idea how a manga having seasons even works, that doesn’t make sense.

Now here comes the film (or three-part episode series) and upon seeing the first trailer, I thought it would adapt the one-shot because that came out first, but as later trailers came out... It’s adapting the serialized series?! How long was this in the making?! How did the animators even get to read the four chapters of the serialized manga series before they were even released yet?!

Speaking of Bleach, there’s an upcoming new anime that’s adapting an arc, but like I said, I never grew up nor I care about Bleach, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Golden Kamuy season 3 - October 5th: Information on season 3 has been quite scarce for a while and hell, I have barely even watched the trailers, but at last it’s finally coming. As of the (re)writing of this post, September 29th, I finally managed to watch the OVAs and I forgot how hilarious and weird it can be and I love it.

Danmachi season 3 - October 2nd: Like Akudama Drive, this one was also originally gonna be released on Summer but was delayed because of COVID, I haven’t really talked about it more than I have with Akudama Drive because I’m the most excited for it.

Like Golden Kamuy, I happened to watch the recent OVA when season 2 ended and I haven’t seen the trailers at all. Man, I rarely watch OVAs nowadays. Also, speaking of the OVA, what did I just watch?!

D4DJ First Mix - October 30th: That’s right, this is ANOTHER Sanzigen produced anime of the year, Sanzigen has done it again, they’re absolutely killing this year. Anyways, I wanted to watch this for obvious reasons, but apparently I found out that this D4DJ franchise is a new property by Bushiroad, the publisher of the BanG Dream series, seems like Bushiroad has a soft spot for Sanzigen and I really can’t blame them.

Higurashi remake - October 1st: Starting the month off with a remake adaptation of Higurashi, lovely. I never grew up watching the original Higurashi anime, however, I do remember certain moments from the series... For the absolute worse. (1, 2). Yeah, that’s all I can remember. I really wish I could have binged the original series months ago, at least the first season because upon checking the Wikipedia, there’s a lot of other series and they’re just as long as the first one, there’s no way I would have survived all that binge-watching considering I have other things I’m heavily compromised such as my gacha gaming addiction, and yeah that was silly but I have nothing else to do in my spare time, with that being said about the binge-watching and consuming a lot of material, it would have been the time I binged all of Ikki Tousen for a week all over again.

I don’t know anything about the Higurashi visual novel, I don’t know if the original anime series was a good adaptation or not, I’ll probably let some VN royaltists tell me on this one, the 2000s were probably the time where VN adaptations were absolutely mediocre (which I can’t really say for sure because I don’t play VNs to even care to agree that the Tsukihime and Umineko anime are garbage), but I digress. If you couldn’t tell, the original Higurashi anime is that old, which I don’t understand why the need for an anime remake like at this time and what will it even do as an adaptation.

Watching the series is gonna be totally new to me, this isn’t like a Fruits Basket situation where I refused to watch the original anime series in favor of the remake, and by seeing some comparison videos, the remake is a million times far superior than the remake.

Guraburu! - October 8th: I don’t want to consider my older sister as my personal go-to Granblue Fantasy/Shadowverse/Bahamut source since whatever she says are her opinions and whatever which I wouldn’t always end up agreeing, even if she ends up saying that she hates the main Granblue Fantasy anime series. As for me, I found the first season decent, I liked the animation, but then the second season came and the animation is totally different and that gave me a huge sour taste in my mouth, just the visuals were enough to make me sick from the painful animation and I couldn’t care any single bit of it, and the fact that season 2 came out around the same time where other gacha game-based anime like Fate/Grand Order Babylonia and Azur Lane The Animation came out didn’t do any favors.

I don’t know if Girls’ Frontline or Granblue Fantasy are my blackest gacha game sheeps, I did have some decent experience with the game, I played the Christmas, the Persona 5 and the Detective Conan events (Though I didn’t finish the Conan event), I mostly opened the game for log ins but I occasionally went to do free rolls whenever those happened, lastly I played the campaign for a little bit but I stopped because the one chapter where I last played, I forgot what it was, but it required having a party with higher level and I couldn’t even beat a map once, so I gave up. I haven’t opened the game for a long time and I feel like I have pretty much retired from Granblue Fantasy. I wouldn’t like to try to follow my older sister in the shadows when it comes to Granblue Fantasy, Shadowverse or Rage of Bahamut any longer, so they’re totally out of my league.

My older sister seems rather optimistic about this series as it’s an adaptation of the game’s 4koma, going so far to say this would be “a million times better than the main anime series.”

Honestly I’m not feeling quite fond of these Cygames adaptations as a whole, they can be very hit or miss but the most important thing is whether they resonate with me or not, so I still end up watching everything anyways.

Also, we do not talk about the current Shadowverse anime because that is NOT the Shadowverse I know at all and I can’t believe it’s still going.

Attack on Titan: The Final Season - December 7th: Okay, I definitely did not expect quite a release date for the final season of Attack on Titan at all, it’s so weird that I even thought about whether or not I would classify this as a “Fall” anime and more like closer to the “Winter” season. I haven’t been following the news but my biggest question is, has the manga already ended? This wouldn’t be the final season if it wouldn’t adapt the entirety of the series finale as soon as the source material ended, kind of like Tokyo Ghoul:re.

Talentless Nana - October 4th: I already mentioned above that this is my only decent choice of day 1 anime to watch on my birthday, I’m just putting it here again for the sake of having the list complete.

Toji no Miko - Tomoshibi - October 25th, November 29th: Back when I first watched Toji no Miko back in 2018 (Wow, I already feel old), I found the series okay, they also released a mobile game at the time which I was like “Okay.” But for some reason as time went on I kind of grow to develop a negative aftertaste for the series, like it’s not very appealing or whatever. Then the Mini Toji series came out last year and it added fuel to the fire on my uninterest on the Toji no Miko franchise as a whole with Mini Toji leaving me a huge sour taste in my mouth, it wasn’t even funny, sometimes it was but most of it wasn’t.

I don’t want to associate Yoshinori Shizuma’s art heavily with Kancolle, but I even went so far thinking that Toji no Miko would be the Kancolle of swords or even a female Touken Ranbu of sorts but not exactly like Touken Ranbu, but it does nothing to help to gain interest.

I don’t know why I kind of feel that way towards the franchise, and after the mobile game’s release, I later thought Toji no Miko would become a failed franchise, so where we at now? Well, Toji no Miko is getting an OVA, but it’s not just a single OVA, it’s actually a two-part OVA, lovely. There’s just something about the series that makes me think it’s bland, it’s nothing special and whatever. I do think Yoshinori Shizuma’s character designs are nice, not great or rule 34 worthy but they’re okay at best, and that’s about it.

Mini Toji introduced the characters from the mobile game into the anime scene, and now the new OVAs are heavily based on the mobile game, but honestly, I prefer the characters from the anime series a million times better than the ones from the game, they’re rather forgettable.

You probably want to tell me that if I feel somewhat pessimistic about Toji no Miko, I should boycott the OVA, I’d like to but part of me tells me that maybe I shouldn’t blindly be a dick about it, so I guess I should give Toji no Miko one last chance. I wrote the release date just in case, I’ll probably forget about it anyways except there will be something that’ll make me remind the Toji no Miko OVA parts 1 and 2 will come out soon or have come out depending on the time.

(Speaking of Touken Ranbu, when the hell are we gonna get the new Touken Ranbu Hanamaru project? I recently read the news of the new Hanamaru project being in the works again to refresh my memory the last time I saw the news and it was from THIS JANUARY?! Holy crap, that was a really long time ago! I really hope this would resurface in 2021 and it might bring some interest in Touken Ranbu again, although this is Touken Ranbu and the fanbase are hardcore fujos so they’re still keeping the game alive in some way. I always thought the Touken Ranbu anime would now become dormant for some reason, especially when Ufotable is never gonna release the Katsugeki Touken Ranbu movie, they definitely must have ditched it in favor of more Fate and even Kimetsu no Yaiba. The Katsugeki Touken Ranbu film now is sitting next to Girls’ Work as Ufotable’s most infamous vaporware works.)

I guess that’s it for this post, I talked way too much about some of my most anticipated shows than others but it’s clear I do give a lot of thought into some of these things.

VOD news brings you the best releases of the week on Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime Video … And we continue in the deepest of the summer, so it is not surprising that the content that arrives is quite, but generally weak. However, there are always exceptions and the big exception this week is Lovecraft Territory, an HBO series that premieres with a hitch strategy that we have not seen until now.

HBO is simmering this summer and this week more if possible: four garbage is what comes to offer, with the honorable exception of the featured title. And it is that Lovecraft Territory is not only very good, but it is available to anyone, since its first and only episode at the moment is free on YouTube.

Indeed, HBO Spain has put the first episode of Lovecraft Territory free on YouTube, where it will remain available until September 2. Just enough time for a few to dare to hit play … and end up subscribing to HBO, even until the series is completed. Because, I warn you, if you start it you will want to continue it (the only downside of the free chapter is that it is only dubbed).

Territory Lovecraft is based on a novel and mixes the typical terror of the American writer with the racial conflicts of the fifties with those who are still obsessed there, which in principle could set back more than one. However, the formula worked with Watchmen and – in a somewhat more pronounced way – it does it again in the case of Lovecraft Territory, which manages to hook immediately. If it maintains the level we can be facing one of the best releases of the year in its genre.

October Roundup

So I thought I’d try and do a little monthly roundup of what I’ve been up to, writing-wise. Mostly for me, so I can actually see what I’ve achieved, you know how it is, you look back and think you’ve done bugger all until you count it all up! If you’re interested, all the better ^_^

Wicked Boys - This is my Fantastic Beasts x Harry Potter crossover fic which I’m slightly obsessed with at the moment. Typical. Just as NaNoWriMo starts, so I’ll have to put it to one side for a whole month! I’ve filled up an entire A5 notebook with the first draft of this story, and another one’s following hard on its heels. I really need to remember that most of my stories these days turn into epics, and I should only write in massive notebooks! At the mo, I’m on chapter 19 of 25, and Grindelgraves might be about to make an appearance...

Zero Degrees - I’ve also been planning and researching this original novel which is weirdly based on a FrostIron fic called Hidden Within, which I’m currently uploading onto AO3. It’s changed from its original form in a MASSIVE way though, and it’s going to be my NaNo this year! The premise is - what if the god of Winter got fed up with being the bad guy in all the myths and took his faeries to go hide in Kenya? Because who’d think of looking for a Winter god at the Equator? It’s written from the point of view of a young girl who gets a crush on one of the young faeries and gets horribly entangled in their drama. I’m excited and terrified about this, to be honest! Mostly excited because I get to write about my beloved country!

New Ideas - SOMEONE got me into reading Drarry fics. May I just, bitterly, say that that’s the worst ship name in the history of ship names? From a fandom that brought us the beauty of WolfStar? Come on, people! However because of this new obsession, I’ve now got 2 stories fully planned out, and they’re gonna be biggies. Well, one might come out around 40k (Blood Protection), while the other has the potential to NEVER BLOODY END (Lily’s Eyes). Also I’ve just received my prompt from the @drarryexchange so I’m already drifting along that road. I feel like there’s a great story just hovering under the surface of my mind and I’ve got to let it come to me, like some sort of wild animal...

The Willing - I wrote quite a bit on this earlier this month, but a lot of research on epilepsy had to happen...for a character who I knew wouldn’t be diagnosed with epilepsy. Sigh. I had to make it LOOK like he might have it, so hence learning about EEG, post-ictal confusion, encephalitis and oxygen deprivation during a tonic-clonic seizure. I might even have cornered a paramedic in McDonalds one day just to interrogate her...I’m really sorry, love, you looked so tired - I hope I kept it short enough and gave you a story to laugh about! I’m stuck on chapter 7 of 15 because I can’t quite figure out how the best friend is going to react to the MC yelling at her just before his fit...

Hallows - Ooh! That’s completely done, I just uploaded the last chapter yesterday ^_^ Yay!

Stop Me in Hours of Darkness - This is just a plotted out idea, to join the legion of other plotted out ideas, but I’m still excited about it. It’s about two teenage boys dealing with the abuse they’ve survived together. Ravi’s very protective about James, who’s new and still bogged down in his abusive situation. They have this very tactile queer-platonic relationship going on which everyone outside of their group finds very strange, but their friends, including Ravi’s girlfriend, find perfectly normal because James needs protection and cuddles, and Ravi, who’s a bit of a rudeboi and hard as hell, is not going to get teased for giving them! Also...the title. I don’t even know, OK? I saw it somewhere completely incongruous, it stuck in my head, it’s hanging out for a while, OK?

Other stuff - I seem to have abandoned Not Broken for a while :( it’s not the end! I still know exactly what’s going to happen when Rose and Max get together and Rose gives birth to someone else’s baby and has to prove that just because she has ovaries doesn’t mean she’s going to get attached to the kid (she’s sort of a surrogate...it’s complicated!) There are also 2 Merlin stories and 4 other original stories that are completely planned, I just...haven’t got round to writing them yet. And I really REALLY want to. It’s quite sad, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to write fast enough to keep up with my muse. On the plus side, if my muse ever goes on holiday, I’ll have plenty to keep me busy until it comes back, with all that backlog lol!

Summer 2017 Anime Pre-Op 3.0+1.0 [FINALE]

The last and most anticipated part of the Summer 2017 Anime series: Anime you probably should skip.

You Should [Not] Watch

18if

No beating around the bush. 18if had what was perhaps one of the most atrocious first episodes I have ever had the displeasure of sitting through for a variety of reasons.

The foremost reason being its terrible animation and its sense of aesthetic design. I understand that the point of 18if is that it is set inside of a dream world with assumedly trippy dream visuals. However, 18if completely fails at this because these dream worlds are nothing more than an ugly mish-mash of over saturated colors and static backgrounds. This dream world lacks cohesion in any sense of the word and simply slaps together any prop or object possible under the guise that its O.K as long as its a dream.

When I think of a trippy dreamworld I think of the Witch encounters in Madoka Magica. Really, literally anything SHAFT has ever produced is crazier and more dreamy than whatever 18if is trying to achieve. This doesn’t even scratch the surface of how terribly directed this show is.

Frankly, the directing is boring as sin which wouldn’t be worth mentioning if we did not consider the type of world that 18if is trying to create. Not only is there extraordinarily limited animation, but the directing does nothing to hide it nor does it do anything to highlight the weird world that the characters are supposed to inhabit. Once again, Studio SHAFT and Akiyuki Shinbo make the directing in this show look like an absolute pile of garbage when compared to the strange, trippy, yet alluring visual direction put into even the most normal of SHAFT shows. At the very least Hand Shakers had the common decency to go all out with its visual style even if the end result looked like ass.

That isn’t to say that 18if does incorporate some weird directing techniques such as the windowed talking and the decapitation. However, they are too few and far between to be considered an artistic style whilst simultaneously not actually being in service of anything in particular. If anything, it makes the boring parts of the show look worse by comparison. It doesn’t help that this show is horribly paced and practically screams to be over within the first half.

I would talk about the character animation. If there was anything. Of course, that is to be expected from a show of this caliber.

Finally, the actual story of this show is as bad as its visual direction. Our MC is trapped within a dream world with the task of finding his way out and helping others in the process. There, he meets a strange girl and a talking cat scientist (The only tolerable character in the show). He thus fights a witch who has what may be the most cliched and boring backstory of all time before helping her ‘wake up’ I guess. If you can’t tell I’m having a hard time summoning excitement for this show.

Our plucky protagonist is of course the most cookie cutter, do-it-all nice guy with absolutely nothing interesting in his personality, design, or ethos that we have all come to abhor. Of course her helps that poor girl and of course he has witty banter with the cat guy. It’s almost astonishing how fast he comes to turn with his situation after a bit of exploring. It’s also astonishing how he constantly flip flops between confused kid to quipping ‘couldn’t even care less’ hardass. It’s almost as if the writers didn’t put any actual thought to his character or than the fact that he is the vehicle for their stupid story.

I could on and on about this abomination of a production but for the sake of this post I’m cutting it off here. Don’t watch this show. Just don’t.

Hajimete no Gal

Hajimete no Gal is the newest iteration of the ‘gal girl’ genre that has proliferated in anime and manga over the past couple of years.

Unfortunately, HnG is no Galko or Gal Gohan. From what the first two episodes tell us about this series is that it is another harem rom-com with the main gimmick being that our MC believes that our main heroine is sluttier than she actually is. What I will give it credit for is having the MC and main girl hook up first and let the development happen later. Even if this type of development is not entirely original or unique in the slightest, there is still a lot of untapped potential from starting off your romance like this. However, it’s rather difficult to appreciate this plot point considering the entire rest of the show surrounding it.

Simply put, Hajimete no Gal is a dumpster fire burning through any semblance of good ideas and potential it could of had.

What was immediately apparent to me in this show was the absolutely glacial pacing and terrible comedic timing. This first 23 min episode felt like an absolute eternity as scenes drag out much longer than the actual content of the scene allows for. By content, I mean the “humor” and the “erotica” that this show has lovingly offered to us.

HnG is painfully unfunny. Jokes stretch out much longer than is ever necessary. When you thought it was over, the characters will go on to even further explain the joke and run it into the ground. Most of the humor revolves around how disgusting of human beings the main boys are. I’ll touch on them a bit later. Needless to say, HnG recycles the same three gags and ideas in order to kill time until the ED. The strange lack of an OST in most scenes serves to make the humor weird and awkward and not in a way that was intentional or funny.

The “fanservice” of HnG is also abysmal. These fantasies not only drag on like everything else in the show, but these scenes also do the bare minimum for their intention. This show has the subtlety of a falling road roller. It thinks that just throwing tits in ass in your face is enough. And not just tits and ass. But uncomfortably close pantyshots and boobshots that do little in the way of arousal given how little the audience can actually see.

Abject sluttiness is certainly hot for some people, but the fact that these are just fantasies also remove any element of tangible human connection to the main girl that would actually warrant special attention and attraction as the show tries to force down my throat. Outside of the dreams, HnG makes sure to place special focus on more pantyshots and boobshots as if the audience will find any of it special or arousing.

The characters in this show are boring at best and offensively bad at worst. Our MC is a wet fart whose soul purpose in life is to get laid as fast as possible. Understandable if wasn’t for the fact that he is so completely passive in his actions that he lacks any semblance of a personality outside of his libido. What more could you have expected of a lazy audience surrogate.

His friends are perhaps the worst of group of obligatory MC friends I’ve ever seen. These lovely gentlemen have literally one gag associated with each of their characters that becomes immediately old the millisecond they begin speaking. This wouldn’t be so terrible if it weren’t for the fact that they occupy so much screen time and speaking lines that by the halfway point I was already wishing for death.

Our main girl (or should I say ‘gal’) is probably going to become a more endearing character than what this show deserves. However, it’s unlikely that she will ever reach the status of ‘good’ let alone ‘Galko’ tier given what this show has shown me. It is almost completely likely that she will end up as the pure maiden with the heart of gold that this show makes apparent in its premise alone.

Special shout out to the harem members showed off in the first episode that will inevitably lose as tradition dictates. So don;t get too attached.

The animation being featured in this show is mediocre to just bad. Set design and background art is bland school and city design whilst the colors are nothing special. The character art and animation is sub-par. It all looks terrible. As already mentioned, HnG rarely incorporates a backing track making the overall atmosphere and tone of the show strange and unappealing.

After all this shit I’ve talked about Hajimete no Gal, I can’t say 100% say its a complete lost cause yet. The second episode actually had jokes. It had jokes! Three exactly. Exactly three jokes that had good comedic timing and made me smile a bit. A good improvement over the zero jokes the first episode had. I will begrudgingly maintain that HnG can become a halfway decent rom-com if it actually starts exploring the romantic elements of its premise starting literally right now.

But if you aren’t an M like me, I would suggest giving this show a pass for the time being.

In Another World with my Smartphone

If there is one thing I appreciate about this show, it is how brazenly this show embraces all of the tired and universally despised elements of the isekai genre and how it rolls it all into one show.

The absolute worst thing that I can say about this show is how completely dull and boring the thing is. It immediately abandons the central conceit of the show: the smartphone and instead just has the MC be broken OP in every stat from the start. The show then just proceeds to be the worst and most egregious stereotype of all isekais to date.

The MC has the most basic template personality of all time. The girls are nothing more than generic anime girls taken directly from a concept art page.

The animation and music is below average. This entire show is completely below average. The only positive that I can give this show is that it is not offensively bad. It didn’t make me want to kill myself like 18if and HnG did.

I think that it is in your best interest to just skip this show.

Knight’s and Magic

Knight’s and Magic packs what seems to be three entire episodes of content in a single episode. I think that it is a bit unfair to put Knight’s and Magic on the same playing field as the other three shows in this list. However, I still believe that this is still a completely lackluster series on the whole.

I actually quite liked the opening scene set in the real world. There was interesting shot composition and aspect ratio tricks. It also served to effectively characterize the MC and the type of person he is non verbally.

However, the rest of the episode goes on to have our disturbingly obsessive MC be put into the mind of a normal child (What the hell happened to this child’s actual soul anyway?) and then go on to be the most brilliant son of a bitch who ever lived. The show fast forwards through his child’s entire training and introduces the friends and rivals he meets via narrator. I can’t fault the show for trying to get past all the boring set up for the show, but it still feels rushed and unnatural. Thankfully, it seems that this show is going to be slowing down as indicated by the end of the first episode.

I also somewhat appreciate how the MC doesn’t have any innate talent other than his autistic obsession with mecha and his ability to hyper focus on studying and learning magic. He is clearly supposed to be the smart character who can outwit his opponent. That being said, our MC is not all that interesting on his own outside of his capacity to learn and do cool shit. The other characters aren’t anything interesting either.

The animation is O.K but not particularly unique or that interesting. If Knight’s and Magic is your type of show, I would recommend at least trying to check it out. However, I can’t in good conscience give it a bonified recommendation.
