I am now thinking about Essek as, essentially, Anna Ripley for the Ruby Vanguard, and it's genuinely horrific to imagine but it's not a real timeline so it's hilarious. It is so funny in concept. He's a glorified postdoc with no mandatory ethics trainings, no future, and nothing to lose. Also he just got handed the power of a thousand suns with absolutely no oversight and a mandate to "do your worst".
This has such extreme "horse loose in a hospital" energy. No one knows what Essek will do next, least of all Essek! He's never been in control of the power of a thousand suns before! He's as confused as you are!

Friday 11:21PM
The whiskey was harsh and burned like liquid fire as it slid down his throat. He dropped the shot glass onto the bar top and closed his eyes and savored the bloom of the cheap booze warming his chest. The music from the old jukebox behind him belted out tunes that would have been considered outdated when the place opened.
It was like this most nights. He was alone, exhausted, and well on his way to a pleasant buzz. The one thing Connor had going for him was that he hadn’t started in on his third drink until 11 PM.
That had to be some kind of record. On a Friday night, he was usually shitfaced by 10. Call it the long hours he’d been working, or maybe the fact he felt more self-loathing than usual, he’d somehow managed to hold off on spiraling until nearly midnight.
Definitely a record. And Connor deserved to celebrate.
When he tipped the glass with one finger and caught Jimmy’s eye, he nearly looked away in shame. The bartender had never given him shit before, at least in a verbal sense, but the cool stare he gave Connor now made him want to crawl into a hole and die there.
But Jimmy didn’t say a word, just gave him another dose of poison and turned away, leaving Connor in relative peace to enjoy the game. Denton Carter was kicking ass tonight, so at least there was that.
It was all going beautifully until the door opened and the sound of rain echoed throughout the tiny bar, along with a distinct smell of wet asphalt and dirty concrete. Out of the corner of his eye, Connor saw two of the other regulars shift in their seats to stare at the newcomer.
Not another regular, then. And by how lengthy the stares were and the sudden shift in atmosphere, Connor guessed the barometric pressure had taken a drop due to a pair of long legs and pretty eyes.
Turning his body only far enough to get a glance for himself, Connor was not disappointed, eyeing the stranger from their black dress shoes, up their shapely legs clad in dark jeans, past curvy hips and—
Oh.
Connor turned back in his seat, hunched over and grimacing in disgust, put there by the sight of a blue triangle on a lapel and a glowing armband around one arm. He hadn’t even needed to look higher for the LED to know what the fuck had just waltzed into the joint like it actually belonged there.
He nursed his whiskey, praying the thing would pass him by and leave him the fuck alone. Or better yet, Jimmy would throw it out.
No such luck, of course.
“Detective Anderson,” spoke a smooth, raspy voice to his right. “I’m the YN800 model sent by CyberLife.”
He elected to ignore it. Maybe if he did so for long enough, it would take the hint and go away.
Again, Connor’s luck was not holding out.
“I called your cell phone, but you didn’t answer,” the voice continued, unimpeded. “I then looked for you at the station after checking your home, but you weren’t there either. Your colleagues indicated you tended to frequent the bars in the area, and I was fortunate to find you at the fifth one.”
His eye twitched. This thing had gone to his apartment?
“Well, here I am,” he answered, dry and caustic as he stared straight ahead at the wall of bottles. He calculated how angry Jimmy would be if he took out his service pistol and shot it through the head.
Pretty angry, Connor decided. It would probably leave a stain. Also, he didn’t want to compensate some asshole company for property damage.
“What do you want?” he finally growled, scratching his nail into the bar top already marred with various scuffs and dings.
“You were assigned a case earlier this evening. A homicide.”
Already, a headache was forming between the eyes at the sound of the android’s irritatingly friendly voice.
“Yeah, and?”
“It involved a CyberLife android,” it said in that same smooth inflection. “In accordance with procedure, the company has allocated a specialized model to assist investigators.”
You have to be shitting me.
Connor grit his teeth and clenched his glass tighter, a flush of heat moving through him that had nothing to do with his blood alcohol content. A fucking android was sent to help cops do their job?
Fuck that, and fuck this hunk of junk.
“Good for them,” he answered as he tipped the glass up to his lips. “I couldn’t give less of a shit. Now get the fuck out of my face. We don’t need any help, especially from a plastic pair of tits like you.”
He should have known that wasn’t the end of it. The android spoke again, adopting a tone of what it had probably been programmed as “sympathetic.”
“I understand you may be experiencing reluctance to having an android’s assistance in this matter, but I am—“
“—ruining a perfectly good evening, butting your nose where it doesn’t belong and sure as fuck isn’t welcome.”
Connor put his glass down harder on the bar top than he meant to, nearly spilling his drink.
“I suggest you leave before I void your warranty.”
Connor thought the machine got the message when it finally went silent. He could even see its mood ring spinning yellow out of the corner of his eye before it settled on that annoying placid blue.
He’d just brought the glass halfway to his lips when it said, “I’m sorry, Detective, but I must insist.”
Connor set the glass back down and started to count to ten. He couldn’t lose it now, he’d promised Jimmy he wouldn’t break anything else after the last brawl he’d gotten into.
But the fucking thing just kept on talking.
“My instructions stipulate that I have to accompany you.”
“You know where you can stick your instructions?” Connor growled before downing the glass of whiskey.
It was a good thing he had, because its next words made him choke on spit.
“No. Where?”
Connor set the glass down, and for the first time that evening, fully turned toward the android and stared at it.
The damn thing was staring back, head slightly tilted like a curious puppy. It had large eyes to match the image too, earnest and innocent and entirely too sincere. Its attire at second glance wasn’t the typical android faire. A smooth grey android jacket and a dark, patterned tie marked it as something different. Unique.
And just a little too pretty. Every designed, group-focused imperfection on its face made it that much more appealing. Its hair was neatly coifed, pulled up and pinned behind its head, exposing the smooth curve of its neck.
Hanging down the left side of its face was a strategically-placed lock of hair that Connor immediately want to twirl his finger around. He suspected that was the point.
The further down Connor’s eyes traveled, the more he lost his train of thought. The perfectly sensible tie was lying on the slope of its breasts, something even the jacket couldn’t cover. Why the fuck androids had breasts to begin with, Connor couldn’t begin to fathom, and it seemed even more ludicrous now seeing them on a “specialized model.”
The android hadn’t moved apart from its artificial breathing, another thing about the machines that was uncanny. They weren’t human, and the fact CyberLife kept trying to pass them off as such was a goddamn insult to humanity.
He met the thing’s eye, gave an unimpressed huff, and went back to nursing his drink. If the fucking tin can didn’t understand a dirty innuendo, he certainly wasn’t going to ruin its pristine, virginal programming.
Connor doubted everything that had just gone through his head as those unnecessarily realistic tits were pressed against his elbow, without warning or any sense of decency or a concept of personal space.
“How about this, Detective?”
Connor fumbled, nearly spilling his drink, a massive what the fuck! warning flashing in his head as the machine pressed closer.
“I’ll buy you another drink, on the house. Surely that’s worth a few minutes of your time? And if not, you can send me on my way.”
Connor couldn’t speak with that voice right into his ear like a close confidant, sultry and low and borderline pornographic, so it was a good thing the android didn’t bother waiting for a response.
Instead, it turned to Jimmy and said in a louder, more normal tone, “Bartender, another round for the detective, please.”
Jimmy turned from where he was cleaning glasses on the counter, eyebrows shooting upward as he looked from the machine to Connor. It had backed up a few inches, but there were a lot of reflective bottles on the wall. Connor wondered just how much Jimmy had seen.
Connor gave a little helpless shrug as if to say, Don’t look at me, I don’t know what the fuck it’s doing!
But when the damn thing actually brought out real paper money and set it on the counter, Jimmy got moving. Seemed he wasn’t picky about where his money came from, and Connor almost resented the fact he hadn’t thrown the android out on principle.
Who the hell gave it money in the first place? CyberLife? What, did they hand it a few bucks of allowance before letting it off its leash?
Despite all his reservations, and there were a great many of them, Connor was not about to turn down a free drink. Or two.
“Make it a double,” he grumbled, purposefully avoiding the android’s focused gaze. He could practically feel the thing staring into the side of his head, but at least it remained at a distance and wasn’t pressed against his side like a drunk, horny badge bunny anymore.
“Thanks, Jim.” Connor took the glass and tipped it back, drowning it in one go. The slide of the familiar burn down his throat, spreading throughout his limbs, did quite a lot to help ease the tension in his muscles.
He released a heavy exhale, pushed away from the bar, and got to his feet.
“You want to play plastic cop? Okay, then. Keep up,” he said, tilting his head in its direction without actually looking at it. “Or I’m leaving your ass behind.”
Connor didn’t wait for a response, only raised his hand in parting to Jimmy, and pushed open the door to let the rain-drenched Detroit night swallow him whole. But even through the sound of the rain pinging off the hood of his nearby car he could hear the even footfalls behind him, just a little too close for comfort.
Fucking androids.

It would certainly show up that Jimmy has actually been fortunate that USADA was prepared to go above and beyond, and resource its own bathtub in order to sustain his assertion that the supplement concerned included ostarine. Nevertheless, it's the dose of each careful androgen receptor modulator that matters most, together with the details chemicals used to create it. Sarms are similar to steroids, yet they are not one as well as the same. Both work by binding to your androgen receptors, setting off changes in your dna which boost your muscular tissues' capacity to expand. The fascination for sarms comes from the theory that they can create results the same to anabolic steroids without the adverse effects. Well, as strange as it appears, a minimum of, part of that holds true. Yet, they show a strong fondness for androgen receptors in bone as well as muscle cells only. This is not the very first time the usa has actually been pushed better to banning sarms. If you're familiar, the sarms manage act made it's method with congress starting as early as 2018. Sarms are similar to steroids in numerous means, so they share a number of the very same adverse effects.
This can or else prove to be quite difficult as it calls for staying clear of squandering muscle. Your PCT can be the difference in between having negative effects and also not. SERMS or Discerning Estrogen Receptor modulators are one of the most widely known unlawful PCT medications due their performance but likewise, sadly, a few of the adverse effects that come with them.
Acquire steroids, peptides and also pct from ausroids welcome to ausroids, your ideal online source for getting anabolic steroids, peptides, and also post-cycle treatment supplements in australia. Sarms are selective androgen receptor modulators which is presently thought about more secure as well as much less hazardous than anabolic steroids. Type sensible, sarms fall into 2 primary classifications, one that is steroidal and the 2nd one is non-steroidals. Steroidal sarms were found about 70 years ago with no usage for human problems except those with dire demands.
What does LGD 4033 do?
LGD-4033 is a novel nonsteroidal, oral SARM that binds to androgen receptor with high affinity (Ki of ∼1 nM) and selectivity. In animal models, LGD-4033 has demonstrated anabolic activity in the muscle, anti-resorptive and anabolic activity in bone, and robust selectivity for muscle versus prostate.
Negative effects of RAD-140 are mostly unidentified due the absence of human tests and was only initial explained in 2010 by Miller et alia, created by Distance Health. It is widely approved that adverse effects are likewise dose reliant. First of all, Cadarine is not a Careful Androgen Receptor Modulator however instead is a Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Delta receptor agonist. It is commonly classified or grouped with SARMs from a sales and also advertising and marketing viewpoint. The receptor plays an important role in human metabolic rate and aids regulated genetics that help manage the transport and also oxidation of fats.
Some sarms such as cardarine and also sr9009 are best for cutting, and other sarms such as ostarine and also s4 are versatile, as well as can be used to either burn fat or develop muscle. The beauty of this stack and sarms as a whole is their convenience in just how they can be used to accommodate various desires and goals. I am a solid proponent with the use of the three-way stack due to the fact that it permits an individual to add quality and clean amounts of lean muscle while still being to able to go down body fat. The greatest done in one sarm pile of mk677, mk2866, cardarine & lgd. This stack is excellent for a person who wishes to obtain lean and much more muscular without the healing issues of utilizing hormonal agents.
Drug testing for SARMs is currently typical technique in sports however was unqualified as late as 2016. Ostarine has a half-life of 24-hour or 23.8 hours to be exact nonetheless no study can be found that definitively shows the discovery time.
Ostarine is classed as an anabolic representative by the World Anti-Doping Company, which reported a low 28 unfavorable logical searchings for across sporting activity in its 2016 Screening Numbers Report.
It assists body builders and other athletes make faster gains from their training, with its cutting and also bulking results.
It is a Discerning Androgen Receptor Modulator created as Enobosarm by pharmaceutical business GTX to deal with conditions involving muscle mass wastefulness or osteoporosis.
It additionally increases your stamina as well as muscular tissue mass, increases bone density as well as assists speed the recovery process after intense strength training.
SARMs, or discerning androgen receptor modulators, are medicines that affect muscle development, typically used in the muscle building area.
Piling develops a synergistic method to raising lean muscle mass whilst decreasing body fat.
Wallhead is a UFC competitor, so is regulated by USADA, despite being based in the UK ... Regrettably, none of this aids Jimmy Wallhead, who was blindsided through use of a supplement that really did not checklist ostarine as an active ingredient on the label. Wallhead has actually been authorized to the UFC, which is not a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code, for concerning 18 months. USADA agreed to run the UFC's anti-doping programme on 1 July 2015, an agreement that was applauded by WADA. Unless you are a chemist or an anti-doping official, the possibilities are that you will not have actually become aware of ostarine. Neither had Jimmy Wallhead, a Ultimate Battling Champion boxer based in Loughborough, UK. Yet he was sanctioned with a 9 month ban after a supplement he had actually utilized was located to consist of the substance. The mechanistic basis of the cells careful actions of SARMs is poorly understood, although a number of systems have been recommended.
4way consists of ostarine, mk-677, ligandrol and cardarine in one item - so you can expect magnificent cause a short timescale, while likewise conserving cash compared to purchasing them individually As well as I VERY SUGGEST THEM, 4 way sarm stack. Discerning androgen receptor modulators are made use of by bodybuilders and powerlifters to maximise fat loss, boost muscular tissue mass, as well as improve body toughness. They are additionally made use of to refurbish injuries, boost muscular tissue as well as bone toughness, and also improve the sense of well-being. Some body builders additionally use SARMs in between anabolic steroid cycles, prohormone cycles, and testosterone cycle for post cycle treatment or as more secure choices to these compounds. Unlike anabolic steroids, which bind to androgen receptors in many tissues throughout the body, private sarms selectively bind androgen receptors in certain cells, but not in others. Discerning androgen receptor modulators-- or sarms for short-- are a relatively brand-new group of medications that have the ability to give every one of the benefits of anabolic steroids without many of the adverse effects.
There is no requirement for healing supplements when using these 2 sarms given that they do not act upon the body the same way hormonal agents would certainly. Despite it being a rather mild sarm, it's in fact truly solid. You will see a great deal of researchers pile andarine with ostarine to produce a synergic impact.
It deserves keeping in mind at a PCT is probably required due to its capacity to lower FSH, LH and Testosterone levels. When S23 was provided to male rats it led to a 100% infertility rate. But the majority of interestingly sperm count went back to normal after ending up S23, as well as rats resumed mating at 100% maternity prices. However, too much S23 created sperm matters to turn around the first result and also supported sperm manufacturing. Because of this we are unable to categorise its impacts and also potential outcomes. YK-11 to start with is not a SARM, take a look at our post on YK-11 for an extra detailed testimonial. YK-11 was regretfully mislabeled as a SARM when as a matter of fact it is a new artificial steroid that has just had actually In-Vitro research studies done on it.

Adverse effects of RAD-140 are mostly unknown due the absence of human tests as well as was just first defined in 2010 by Miller et alia, established by Distance Health and wellness. It is widely approved that negative effects are likewise dose reliant. Firstly, Cadarine is not a Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator yet instead is a Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Delta receptor agonist. It is frequently classified or grouped with SARMs from a sales as well as marketing perspective. The receptor plays a vital role in human metabolism and aids regulated genetics that assist take care of the transport as well as oxidation of fatty acids.
Some sarms such as cardarine and sr9009 are best for cutting, and also various other sarms such as ostarine and also s4 are versatile, as well as can be utilized to either shed fat or develop muscle. The elegance of this stack as well as sarms as a whole is their adaptability in just how they can be utilized to suit different desires and also objectives. Buy best quality peptides Direct Norway am a strong proponent with using the three-way pile since it permits a user to include top quality and also clean amounts of lean muscle while still being to able to drop body fat. The greatest done in one sarm pile of mk677, mk2866, cardarine & lgd. This pile is excellent for a person that wants to get lean and more muscular without the healing problems of making use of hormones.
Medicine screening for SARMs is now common practice in sports yet was unqualified as late as 2016. Ostarine has a half-life of 24 hr or 23.8 hrs to be exact nevertheless no research study can be discovered that definitively reveals the detection time.
Ostarine is classed as an anabolic agent by the Globe Anti-Doping Agency, which reported a reduced 28 adverse logical findings across sporting activity in its 2016 Screening Numbers Report.
It helps bodybuilders as well as other athletes make faster gains from their training, with its reducing and bulking impacts.
It is a Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator established as Enobosarm by pharmaceutical company GTX to deal with conditions entailing muscle wastage or osteoporosis.
It likewise raises your strength and also muscle mass, enhances bone density and assists speed up the recovery process after intense stamina training.
SARMs, or careful androgen receptor modulators, are medicines that influence muscle mass development, frequently used in the muscle building community.
Piling produces a synergistic approach to raising lean muscle mass whilst lowering body fat.
Wallhead is a UFC boxer, so is controlled by USADA, in spite of being based in the UK ... However, which programs of this assists Jimmy Wallhead, who was blindsided with use of a supplement that really did not checklist ostarine as a component on the label. Wallhead has been authorized to the UFC, which is not a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code, for concerning 18 months. USADA agreed to run the UFC's anti-doping program on 1 July 2015, an arrangement that was complimented by WADA. Unless you are a drug store or an anti-doping official, the possibilities are that you will not have become aware of ostarine. Neither had Jimmy Wallhead, a Ultimate Battling Championship competitor based in Loughborough, UK. Yet he was approved with a nine month restriction after a supplement he had actually made use of was discovered to contain the material. The mechanistic basis of the cells discerning activities of SARMs is badly recognized, although numerous devices have actually been proposed.
4way consists of ostarine, mk-677, ligandrol and also cardarine in one product - so you can anticipate amazing cause a short timescale, while additionally saving cash contrasted to getting them individually And I EXTREMELY ADVISE THEM, 4 way sarm pile. Careful androgen receptor modulators are utilized by bodybuilders and powerlifters to increase fat loss, increase muscular tissue mass, as well as boost body toughness. They are also used to fix up injuries, boost muscular tissue and also bone toughness, and also enhance the sense of well-being. Some body builders also utilize SARMs in between anabolic steroid cycles, prohormone cycles, as well as testosterone cycle for post cycle treatment or as much safer alternatives to these substances. Unlike anabolic steroids, which bind to androgen receptors in lots of cells all over the body, individual sarms precisely bind androgen receptors in certain tissues, but not in others. Careful androgen receptor modulators-- or sarms for short-- are a rather brand-new classification of drugs that have the capacity to offer every one of the advantages of anabolic steroids without many of the side effects.
There is no need for healing supplements when utilizing these 2 sarms considering that they don't act on the body the same way hormones would. In spite of it being a fairly mild sarm, it's actually truly strong. You will see a lot of researchers pile andarine with ostarine to develop a synergic impact.
It deserves keeping in mind at a PCT is possibly needed as a result of its ability to decrease FSH, LH as well as Testosterone degrees. When S23 was offered to male rats it caused a 100% infertility rate. Yet the majority of surprisingly sperm matter returned to regular after finishing S23, and also rats resumed mating at 100% pregnancy rates. Nevertheless, excessive S23 caused sperm counts to turn around the first result and sustained sperm manufacturing. Because of this we are unable to categorise its results and also prospective outcomes. YK-11 to start with is not a SARM, look into our short article on YK-11 for an extra in depth evaluation. YK-11 was sadly mislabeled as a SARM when in fact it is a new artificial steroid that has just had In-Vitro researches done on it.

Harry Potter and the Doctrine of the Calvinists
by Dan H
Friday, 17 August 2007
Dan refuses to just give up on the Potter articles already.~
A lot of people are mortally offended by the ending of the Narnia series, because it seems to suggest that Susan's absolute rejection of all the teachings of Christ prevents her from getting into heaven. I actually like it for exactly that reason: it's got a firm grounding in a genuine religious philosophy which I find significantly more interesting than the usual messages one gets from children's literature, or popular fiction in general.
This, of course, is why it seems so crazy to the secular reader. It's based on some profound assumptions about the metaphysical reality of the world, and if you don't believe the world works like that it doesn't make any sense. Many atheists (and a fair number of Christians, for that matter) have a hard time getting their heads around the idea that you can be a perfectly decent person, but still not go to heaven.
Even more difficult for atheists like me to get our heads around are the doctrines of the Calvinists. Very roughly (from my limited understanding) the Calvinists embrace fully the idea that it is impossible for any human being to be truly worthy of God's love. God is just that great and we are just that flawed. This is actually comparatively uncontroversial - it's just a firm statement of the idea that salvation comes wholly from the Grace of God, and not from your individual virtue. The Calvinists take this idea to its logical conclusion: that since obviously not everybody can be saved, God's grace will only fall on a small proportion of the population - the Elect. Since nobody can be worthy of God, whether one is or is not part of the Elect is entirely outside of one's own control. There are just some people who are predestined towards salvation, and some who aren't.
Now it would be easy here to score cheap points and say that this is just somebody using religion as a control mechanism, pretending that the reason he's so much better off than everybody else is because God likes him better. But that's actually not massively plausible. After all, when Calivinist doctrine was first developed, the Calvinists weren't exactly ruling the roost.
Calvinism is actually a fairly logical extension of one of the more difficult points of protestant doctrine: the idea of salvation by grace. People seem to be uncomfortable with the idea that drawing closer to a supernatural being who transcends all of the concerns of physical reality might actually not be the same thing as being nice to people. Perhaps it's just overexposure to classical mythology at an impressionable age, but I don't find it that hard to understand. I somehow can't imagine a classical theologian saying "but why would the Gods be so angry about Prometheus stealing fire? Why do we worship them if they're so mean?" or a Viking saying "I'm sure that Odin will understand that you wanted to die valiantly in battle."
I think that perhaps the reason people find the ideas expressed in - say - Calvinist theology, or The Last Battle is that, since we live in a secular society, we naturally divorce these kinds of ideas from their supernatural context. For example: burning at the stake was actually supposed to be a merciful form of execution, because it allowed the accused the maximum possible amount of time to repent. If you genuinely believe in an immortal soul, this is actually very sensible. Far better to burn somebody to death slowly, giving them a chance to go to heaven, than to cut their head off and condemn them to hell. To somebody who doesn't believe in an afterlife, though, it's needless cruelty.
When you decontextualise the doctrines or practices of a religion, you invariably make them into something extremely sinister and disturbing.
Which is why Harry Potter freaks me out so much.
JK Rowling self-defines as a Christian. More specifically, she was apparently raised Church of Scotland which, the internet reliably informs me, has strong Calvinist influences. If this is true, then it seems that Rowling has allowed her faith to strongly influence her work. Unfortunately she has also allowed it to become so decontextualised as to be unrecognisable.
Let us take the principle of Election, the notion that there are a fortunate few who, by grace of God, shall be called to salvation. In the Potterverse "Election" is called "Sorting" and instead of being controlled by Almighty God it is controlled by a hat.
Now I know Rowling pays lip service to the houses all being equal, but it's nonsense. Gryffindor is the superior house, all the way. Rowling herself declares not only that she would want to be in Gryffindor if she attended Hogwarts but also that she "hopes she would be found worthy."
So basically at the age of eleven, your fate is already sealed. Either you're Gryffindor, or you're evil, or you're chattel. You can't change, you can't be redeemed (unless you've already had the good fortune to fall in love with a Gryffindor) you are either Good or you are Evil or you Just Don't Matter and none of your decisions, none of your actions, mean a damned thing. No matter how much of a bullying little shit James Potter was, we are never really asked to see him as anything but a hero. Lily treats Snape like dirt, but is still the byword for selfless love in the series. And of course Dumbledore, our epitome of goodness, is a manipulative self-serving bastard who plots world domination and raises Harry to be a sacrificial lamb. But in the end we are expected to view all of these people as heroes because they were Gryffindors and therefore virtuous by definition.
Then of course there is Snape. After nearly twenty years of loyal service to Dumbledore, risking death or worse to spy on the Dark Lord, and incidentally building up a loyal fanbase who for some reason think that being smart is cooler than owning a flying motorcycle, JK Rowling eventually grants him the ultimate accolade. "Sometimes, we sort too soon." If a member of a different house displays courage, it shows that they must really be a Gryffindor deep down.
Rowling clearly subscribes to the philosophy that a person has a fundamental nature. That deep down a person cannot change. Deep down Harry is a hero, Percy is officious, Voldemort is Evil, Snape is a bully, Dumbledore is good but tempted by power. None of these traits will change, none of them can change. Rowling seems to believe it impossible.
This is most apparent, I think, in how she writes about Harry. It is never his actions. which win him praise, but rather the spirit in which he acts. This is perhaps most apparent in the seventh book, when Harry uses the Cruciatus curse on Amycus Carrow and McGonagall responds with the statement that it is "very gallant" of him.
Now I admit I might be a little bit behind the times here, but how is torturing your enemies "gallant"? Presumably in the same way that a single minded obsession with the personal destruction of your enemies has something to do with "love".
But my objections here are based on a false assumption: on the assumption that a person's moral character (their salvation, their redemption) is in any way affected by their actions. In Rowling's world it is not, and this is a deliberate and conscious theme throughout the books. Harry performs the same actions as other characters, but because he is by nature pure, his actions are actions of goodness, not of evil.
Even further proof that Harry's goodness is nothing to do with his actions - or indeed even his personality - but is instead some kind of elemental property comes from this rather interesting quote, regarding the fact that Voldemort had hope of salvation:
"Because he had taken into his body this-- this drop of hope or love (Harry's blood). So that meant that if he could have mustered the courage to repent, he would have been okay. But, of course, he wouldn't. And that's his choice."
Now there's two interesting things here. The first is that Voldemort's hope came literally from Harry's blood. Voldemort is not a person, Harry is not a person. Harry is a vessel full of Hope and Love in distilled form. No matter how many people he tortures or brutalises, he will always have Hope and Love in his very blood. It is physical contact with Harry's blood that gave Voldemort his one chance of redemption.
The second, subtler point is this one:
"But, of course, he wouldn't. And that's his choice."
Notice that she uses the words "of course" and "his choice" in the same sentence. And this is the point I find most interesting.
If you ever try to argue that JK Rowling is a slavering determinist, people always pull out two facts. Firstly, there's the fact that Harry "chose" not to be placed in Slytherin. Secondly, there's this extremely interesting line by Dumbledore.
"It is our choices Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
Now I hope it doesn't look like I'm being obsessive here, but I think it's extremely telling that Dumbledore uses the phrase "show what we truly are" and not " say "decide what we become." Dumbledore is telling us, quite clearly, that who we are never changes, that the decisions we make in our lives serve only to illuminate our natures, which are otherwise immutable.
So Voldemort could never have been redeemed. He was given the chance to "try for some remorse" but there was never any realistic expectation that he would be able to. Indeed we are told repeatedly throughout the series that Voldemort is not capable of love. Not that he hasn't known love, that he has never experienced love, that he is literally incapable of it.
A choice, to Rowling, is not a chance to control one's own destiny, but a chance to show your quality. The outcome of a choice is predetermined. Voldemort would never have chosen redemption, so he had no chance of redemption, no matter how much of Harry's Magic Blood he had pumping through him.
I started this article talking about Calvinist Election, and by mentioning that "atheists like me" find it a rather disturbing concept. I think a big thing that people find uncomfortable is the idea that "the Elect" get to strut around being all superior, just because some random fluke made them God's Chosen. This is of course not how it works. The whole point of Election is that no one man is more worthy of salvation than any other, that any who are saved, are saved by the grace of God, not by their own merits. Within Calvinist philosophy being "chosen" doesn't make you better than anybody else, it just gives you one extra reason to thank God.
Rowling's world, however, really does work the way atheists perceive Calvinist Election as working. Harry is arbitrarily singled out as being "special" or "chosen" and this literally does make him better than other people. Harry is as incorruptible as Voldemort is irredeemable. Harry's choices will always be the right ones, not because of his moral character but because the world itself will change to accommodate him. He can withstand the Imperius Curse, he can see into the mind of the Dark Lord, yet remain uncorrupted by it, he can unite the Deathly Hallows. Even when he actively seeks to bring pain and death to his enemies, it is somehow virtuous. Because Harry is Just That Awesome.
JK Rowling has said, in interview:
"My beliefs and my struggling with religious belief and so on I think is quite apparent in this book."
And apparent it is. The culmination of the Harry Potter series reads like the scrabbling of a Cultural Christian, trying to construct a moral framework out of fragments of doctrine she does not entirely understand or believe. Half-formed ideas about faith and destiny and redemption and death collide producing a result that is mostly simplistic, and occasionally sacrilegious.
The quasi-Christian overtones make some parts of the book genuinely incoherent. At times Harry's faith in Dumbledore is presented as almost akin to faith in God. He sets forth on his great journey, after all, knowing virtually nothing and Trusting That Dumbledore Would Provide. Indeed the Dumbledore-as-Divinity concept is a strong theme from the very start. It is very frequently Harry's Faith in Dumbledore that truly saves the day (most explicitly in Chamber of Secrets). The entire subplot with Dumbeldore's backstory is presented almost as Harry's last test of Faith.
And of course if Dumbledore is God, then this naturally casts Harry in the role of Jesus: walking amongst the unbelievers, spreading His word, facing persecution and ultimately death. A sacrifice made in perfect Love to redeem the sins of the Wizarding World.
Except that Dumbledore isn't God, he's just a guy, so having unwavering faith in him isn't laudable, it's blind fanaticism. And Harry doesn't sacrifice himself to save Hogwarts, he sacrifices himself to kill Voldemort. Hell, Rowling even admits that after book 6, if Harry looked into the Mirror of Erised he would see "Voldemort finished, dead, gone". His deepest desire is not to protect his friends, or even to live a normal life, but to kill the guy who killed his parents.
It's a mess, and the fact that it's a mess is probably the saddest thing of all. Rowling so clearly wanted to say something big about faith, about love, and about death, but all she has managed to do is communicate her own confuson.Themes:

at 11:11 on 2007-08-17I think you can also see attitudes towards predestination in her view of herself and her work. I was watching her original publisher on TV the other day talking about how he advised her to get a day job, because very very few people can actually make a living on children's books, and how she simply said she was very confident that HP would be successful. Which turned out to be right, of course, but there's no way anyone could have predicted exactly how much the HP books took off (and arguably they didn't become
really
massive until
Prisoner of Azkaban
). I know, I know, most authors probably harbour hopes that they'll be able to live off their soon-to-be-published novel and ditch the day job, it's human nature to be optimistic - but it's also human nature to harbour a deep-seated worry that your book might just flop. Rowling has never shown any evidence of the latter.

at 14:49 on 2007-08-17This is, I think, also evidence of Ms Rowling's deeply fucked up priorities. Having faith in yourself is one thing, but she had a fucking *kid* to support. You think she'd give some thought to how the poor bastard was going to eat.
Also: Fun exercise for your spare time. Re-read the chapter entitled "Horcruxes" in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It's as fucked up as all hell. It's where Dumbledore explains that Harry Potter hating Voldemort and wanting to kill him is evidence of his deep capacity for love.

at 16:23 on 2007-08-17Lets see, choice quotes from that chapter include:
"If Voldemort had never murdered your father, would he have implanted in you a furious desire for revenge?"
And of course
"You have never been seduced by the Dark Arts, never, even for a second, shown the slightest desire to become one of Voldemort's followers!"
"Of course I haven't," said Harry indignantly. "He killed my mum and dad!"
"You are protected, in short, by your ability to love!" said Dumbledore loudly.
And
"Imagine, please just for a moment that you had never heard that prophecy! How would you feel about Voldemort now? Think!"
"I'd want him finished," said Harry quietly. "And I'd want to do it."
That's your shining beacon of love folks: an angry little man driven by pure hatred and the desire for personal vengeance.

at 16:33 on 2007-08-17That's hilarious. It's like Dumbledore is dozing his way through a speech and isn't actually listening to what Harry is saying.
"So, Harry, what will you do if you defeat Voldemort?" asked Dumbledore.
"I will become an Auror and turn the Ministry of Magic into a terrifying machine devoted to exterminating House Slytherin. I will use Unforgivable Curses like they were party tricks. I will break every single rule regulating magical law enforcement in my pursuit of the Slytherin menace."
"Oh Harry, you truly are a fountain of love and forgiveness!"

at 16:38 on 2007-08-17It's even worse than that: he's paying absolute attention to what Harry's saying, but deep down he's thinking "bwahahaha, see how I have manipulated this boy into believing that his childish desire to lash out at Lord Voldemort is a noble and selfless act! Now he is certain to do exactly as I wish while I arrange his death!"

at 16:47 on 2007-08-17Yeah. You know how I said how Harry walking to his own death in order to be the messiah was the act of a paranoid schizophrenic? I take that back. Orchestrating your own death and the death of your protege because you firmly believe that a) this will let you defeat the greatest evil in the world and b) this is how you think the Truest Love works is the act of a paranoid schizophrenic megalomaniac.

Hemmens, you've skewered the woman precisely and with brio, and you deserve applause, but how in the name of fuck was all this - except the ugly suicide cult business you mention in the previous piece - not visible from the downslope of book 3?

at 09:26 on 2007-08-28I think people still had some faith that Rowling would pull off some brilliant plot twist and the series wouldn't go in the direction that it was obviously going, and in fact did. To be fair, for the first four books she was able to surprise me with the endings - I didn't expect Bloke With Turban to have Lord Voldemort pasted to the back of his head, I didn't expect that Tom Riddle was anything other than a horrible sneak called Tom Riddle, I hadn't guessed that the Goblet of Fire would be a teleportation trap. The third book is the best example of this, where the climactic encounter with Sirius Black you're expecting is still fifty-odd pages away happens early, before our heroes are even slightly ready.
Book 5, conversely, is pretty much devoid of surprises. In books 1-4 the titular thing - the Philosopher's Stone, the Chamber of Secrets, the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Goblet of Fire - is a mysterious object, place or person which is the key to the mystery the book covers. The Order of the Phoenix, conversely, is carefully explained early on in book 5 and isn't really especially relevant or important.

at 11:41 on 2007-08-28True, but until now people could always console themselves with the possibility that the whole goodness-by-selection deal was meant to be a Big Lie which was going to be exposed in the last book. In fact, the bit in
Deathly Hallows
where Harry struggles with the new facts he knows about Dumbledore could have been an excellent opportunity for Harry's worldview to be seriously challenged, but Rowling squandered the opportunity by having Harry's worldview be the correct one all along.
There was plenty of reason for bile and invective to be thrown in Rowling's general direction after books 5 and 6, and several decent causes for complaint after 4. I think the reason the flood has happened now, as opposed to earlier, is that with the publication of book 7 there is now no opportunity for Rowling to redeem the series.

at 16:05 on 2007-08-28The more interesting question then is "what rendered it invisible?"
What surprises me is that everyone here dissing Rowling seems to have reached the same conclusions as I did, and articulated them rather better than I ever managed to, but inexplicably read all the way to the end before doing so. What dazzled you in the meantime? Was it just the plot, or were there promises of complexity in Harry and his gang that I overlooked?
I'd particularly like to know because I might then be able to reverse-engineer some kind of cure and inject it into the friend who told me last week '[book 7] is a fucking triumph and we're lucky to have her'. Or at least understand what the hell's going on with that.

at 16:24 on 2007-08-28For my part, I was assuming (until book 5) that Rowling was going to pull the same start with the overarching plot of the series that she did with books 1-4 - specifically, try her hardest to trick the reader into thinking that a particular thing was going to happen, and then pull the rug out from under them. Sure, it was pretty obvious that we were going to have a ludicrous final battle in Hogwarts between Harry and Voldemort, and that Harry would prove to be the Chosen One by virtue of his amazing feat of surviving to his first birthday, but in the early Potter books whenever something's
that
obvious it usually isn't true.
Rowling's a one-trick pony, but she's pretty good at the narrative misdirection trick. It's why you had fans suggesting with a straight face that Dumbledore was actually Ron from the future; people realise that Rowling often throws out sudden plot twists, especially when the plot seems to be fairly straightforward, and the fans had plenty of fun coming up with convoluted ideas of what would happen at the conclusion.
Rowling's biggest misdirection was tricking people into thinking that the things which were obviously going to transpire in the HP series would not, in fact, come to pass.

I think that sometimes, you just don't *see* the bad points of a book for whatever reason. Everyone I know can speak to hating or at least disliking a book that they loved a while ago- it's the same sort of thing at work, or at least the same set of forces. For some reason, you may just want to enjoy a book so badly that you ignore its rough corners. Or you aren't yet adept at recognising those rough corners yet, so they pass you by. Or you weren't really paying much attention, and everything seems all right to your friends, and everything seems all right in (faulty) hindsight, so you jump at the next chance to read more from the same author.
All of that is far, far more pronounced when there is a lot of strong emotion sloshing around about a book or story or creative endeavour. You're either caught up in the hype to some extent, invest in it and suddenly realise it matters to you because your investment in it feels a lot sillier if it doesn't matter to you, or you're not and you wonder why the hell everyone's losing their heads over the whole thing.

at 21:17 on 2007-08-29Agreed, empink.
The first three books, at least, have advantages to balance their disadvantages. They're not great literature (but then, what is?) but they're reasonably well-written, tautly plotted, genuinely amusing and occasionally, as Arthur points out above, quite surprising. I remember being quite startled that Snape wasn't, in fact, the bad guy of book 1 and I was quite impressed at the rather morally complex position he occupied in what was obviously a children's a book: at that stage in the game, he's good but not nice which is interesting for a children's book.
Also, as empink observes, the problems aren't really pronounced enough to add up to anything coherently problematic. Dan could never have written this article based off the first few books. I remember Harry seemed rather bland but nobody cared - he was a hero and heroes are meant to Save The World not be interesting and they were plenty of nice secondary characters to shine well when set against Harry's lack of personality. And the fact that Snape *wasn't* the bad guy seemed to suggest that Slytherin - despite the bad press - weren't basically evil, again suggesting a potentially morally layered universe. As the books progresses the houses, for example, become more and more simplified. I always thought well of the potrayal of Cedric Diggory (from book VI). I mean, he's a Hufflepuff, but he's clever AND brave AND abmitious. I always thought that might be trying to say something worthwhile.
Of course it wasn't.
Also the later books are all about shutting down avenues of interpretation - the early books are a glorious free-for-all. Because they're not sprawling information dumps, the glimpses of the world they offer are subtle and intriguing - perhaps it's just evidence of how lame we are but we used to spend hours discussing Harry Potter in the pub, wondering what this and that meant, and what was going to happen, and who such and such a character was.

at 22:11 on 2007-08-29Slytherin is a particularly good example, actually. From the very beginning, Rowling has been adamant that the Slytherins aren't all evil. The internal evidence of the books seems to correspond with that, right up until the end when whoosh! Basically every Slytherin student and teacher turns Quisling and helps the Death Eaters stomp all over Hogwarts. The one exception is Snape, and it's notable that at the very end Harry names his kid after Snape because of Snape's courage - the Griffindor virtue, not traditionally anything to do with Slytherin.

at 10:23 on 2007-08-30Fair enough. Looking back, I can remember that sense that though the first three were flawed, there was something a bit different about them; the Slytherins had that aristocracy-of-hell feel that old guard Tories like Heseltine do (they may be scum, but they're engaging scum and you know where you are with them); Snape was, as Kyra says, not bad but not nice. I remember even being faintly impressed that Rowling knew what colour a philosopher's stone would be, but that she didn't feel the need to regurgitate all the matching alchemical background. It suggested she'd bothered to do the research but wore it lightly.
I wasn't that impressed though. I also remember reading a quote by some publishing type on the back of the first book way back in like '98, to the effect that future generations of children will talk about Diagon Alley the way past ones talked about the Hundred Acre Wood or, I don't know, Byker Grove or something. I thought that was ridiculous hyperbole. I suppose that's why he's a publishing type and I'm not, because how wrong was I.
@empink. The hype and social enthusiasm bypassed me, largely for reasons of grumpiness I suppose. So that's a powerful inoculating factor too.
Again, I guess that Harry's abject blandness was less apparent in his pre-teenage years. I don't really understand children, so absence of personality in them is less troublesome. I imagine that's true of other people too.
"the problems aren't really pronounced enough to add up to anything coherently problematic." I still disagree - I think the Choosing Hat alone is a particularly repellent embodiment of the English class system - but I think I have a better idea of why bright, sane people were distracted enough not to be bothered.

at 13:16 on 2007-08-30On Harry's personality: half the reason book 5 lost me was that Harry became a repugnant, grumpy teenager. He was a well-observed repugnant teen, and I can just about barely remember what it was like being one myself, but there's a reason most people don't want to hang out with such oiks once they get over puberty, and that's because they're completely awful to be around.
In the earlier books his main personality trait was utter confusion and occasional amazement and wonder when regarding the world he'd been thrust into, which worked nicely with his role as the character we see the world through. It's a good device for the first three-or-so books, but it couldn't have been maintained for the entire series - nobody would have bought it if Rowling had tried to have Harry still be completely bowled over by the awesomeness of the wizarding world when he's lived in it for over half a decade - but it's a crying shame she didn't have anything particularly good to replace it with.
Re: the Sorting Hat - in the early books, I could accept the Sorting Hat as being a nice pastiche of the apparently arbitrary nature kids get assigned to classes and houses in secondary school. I could convince myself that the Hat essentially took a quick look at the students' personalities and flung them into whichever House seemed to have the most suitable internal culture for them, and the different characters of the Houses were a result of a self-perpetuating internal culture that the Hat just reinforced. It eventually became brutally apparent that the Hat is essentially a living filter for the Elect, and that being chosen as Gryffindor by the Hat is essentially an absolute vote of confidence in your moral integrity, but it took a while; again, it wasn't until book 5 that I realised that we'd never seen
one
single person who didn't fit in perfectly in their House, and
come on
: just because you're hard-working or brave or ambitious at 11 doesn't mean that's still going to be the case when you're 15.

SO TRUE.

That's what I would have said after reading it. I can't remember how many times I wanted to point at JKR's treatment of the women in her book (married, had babies, or wanted to, or died, or died regardless, or were ugly, unsexy and old) and ask people what they thought was up with THAT. Then again, I remember how much less that would have pinged me a year or two ago, when I was still supposedly not a feminist. Snape's "I see no difference" feels particularly apt in this case. Until you *do* see the difference, or have it pointed out to you in a way you can't bring yourself to ignore, you...don't. And to others who do, you either look like a huge, defensive jackass, or like Stupid of the century. And to others who don't, you are Sane McGrateful for the author's bounty. And even that's simplifying the whole thing, but really, that's how it seems to have worked in my corner so far.

at 00:40 on 2007-09-07Sorry I haven't commented: No internet.
In short, the reason that it took me a while to realise that Rowling was espousing a repulsive moral philosophy is that the series went through a massive genre shift between (roughly) books four and five, and assumptions which are perfectly acceptable in a boarding school romp have no place in a serious story about love and death and choices.
I always saw the Sorting Hat as being a metaphor for the cliques you get at school. The Slytherins are the privileged popular kids, the Ravenclaw are the swots, Hufflepuff are everybody else. Gryffindor - in the early books - was essentially just "the hero and his mates". There's comparatively little evidence that Gryffindors are *objectively* superior in the early books - there's just Harry's natural tendency to side with his friends. Indeed in the early books there's a fair number of dodgy Gryffindors (like Peter Pettigrew) and admirable non-Gryffindors (like Cedric Diggory and, arguably, Snape). In book five we even discover that James Potter was a bullying little shit. By the start of book six, things actually looked reasonably complex, and rather grown up. The last two books, though, took all of that apart. The Slytherins all leave in the final battle, James Potter wasn't a bully at all, he was just mad at Snape because he called Lily Potter a bad name, and we are asked to take Harry's desire for vengeance as evidence of his moral superiority.
Essentially I didn't find the early books morally repulsive, because I didn't think they were trying to make any kind of moral statement beyond "it is good to stick by your friends" and possibly "believe in yourself". The whole business with Sorting and predestination was just a convenient plot device to give the hero a set of allies and enemies. Early Potter doesn't advocate predeterminism any more than the Lord of the Rings advocates genocide.

Sure it's understandable for fame to go to her head. Doesn't make the results any less execrable.

at 22:42 on 2010-07-27Actually, in Order of the Phoenix, during the sorting hat song, it sings this line (credit from Mugglenet):
For instance, Slytherin Took only pure-blood wizards Of great cunning, just like him
So basically, Rowling admits even earlier that Slytherins are all racist, and therefore the bad guys. I remember this kind of bugged me when I read it, since there is definitely no relationship between being cunning and being pure-blood. And you would think since Voldemort and Snape could by-pass the pure-blood rule, they would get rid of that criteria.
But honestly, I don't see how she can get credit for complex characterization when there such sweeping generalizations about Gryffindors and Slyterins. Especially when some of the good guys show what I consider some very questionable morality (such as Harry crucio-ing the Death Eater over nothing, Dumbledore being a manipulative dick, etc.)

at 23:06 on 2011-02-20I've avidly read this articol and how hell, how you are right!
I admit I'm never been Harry fan (I'm a "Slytherin" person because I feel I fell in that house - not a fan because they're the evil!), but this articole make me even less fan of Harry.
I'd also like to point out what I feel about Draco/Malfoys and Ron/Weasleys: they are basically the same, as both the families are racist but, when Draco say something nasty about Ron (usually something about being poor), he is labelled as "evil" while when Ron says something nasty about Draco (and Slytherins in general), he is still the good guy (or the Chosen One's biggest friend). What always bugged me is that Slytherin's House has some qualities (if I remember right, the Sorting Hat explain them in the first book), and yet "all in Slytherin are bad". What, why? Why there can't be bad or asses in the other houses? Why there is no Death Eater's son in Rawenclaw? Why Slytherins' students are all "Death Eater's wannabes?": couldn't be that many of them have pressures? Couldn't be that many of these families are simply acting like nobles families had done during the centuries, acting in a way while they wanted nothing more than be free to hug, kiss and reward?
I'm going totally off-topic here, but...
Thanxs for this articole! I have read the one regarding Abused Woman in the media and I'll slowly made my way in this site: too many interesting analysis. :)

at 14:05 on 2011-12-30I am not too intelligent to say that I understand what you have writtenabove in your post Daniel.I'll try to interpret DH and essentially HP in my own little simplistic way.
The problem for me is Rowling tries to keep Harry as Jesus and then convert him back to a human . Dumbledore ideally should be the Merlin/Gandalf figure (or like GOD with Harry being the son of GOD) but due to poor writing comes across as a bad human being. who shouldn't be preaching philosophy as he still believed in the greater good with the way he treated Harry.
I haven't read LOTR but have watched the movies and even Tolkien understands Frodo has changed irrevocably because he is no longer normal that he has to go to Valinor which I guess is the term for heaven. Rowling doesn't get this part at all. The epilogue validates how naive Rowling is terms of understanding religion. Harry's ideal character growth for me would be accepting that he has never been normal.

JK Rowling self-defines as a Christian. More specifically, she was apparently raised Church of Scotland which, the internet reliably informs me, has strong Calvinist influences. If this is true, then it seems that Rowling has allowed her faith to strongly influence her work.
I'm fairly sure Rowling didn't start attending the Church of Scotland until she was in her late twenties* -- at the absolute earliest-- but I can see why you wouldn't want facts to get in the way of your rant.
* According to wikipedia, she was born and raised in Gloucestershire, quite far from Scotland.

Thanks for the clarification. To be honest, though, I'm not convinced that there is much difference between "was raised" and "was influenced by in her twenties" and I'm not sure whether that particular detail actually has much to do with my central argument, which is that the Harry Potter books present a world in which some people are predestined towards salvation and others not.
What Rowling herself believes, or why she believes it, or when she started believing it is distinctly secondary.

at 02:54 on 2012-07-14I think people are tripping up on the idea that Rowling's terrible writing is due to her being a deranged Calvinist, rather than just a terrible writer. I don't think this article really pushes that connection very hard, but I can see why people who want to nitpick for the sake of nitpicking would jump on that.

at 10:34 on 2012-07-14I think that's probably the case. Ironically I think the article actually argues fairly strongly that Rowling *isn't* a deranged Calvinist, and that if she was her writing would probably be somewhat improved.
The problem I have with the attitude to Salvation in the Potter books is that it superficially resembles Calvinist Election without any of the theological underpinnings.

Yes, and I'd speculate that seems like that *would* be a product of a later-in-life association with the church, rather than early internalization of the doctrine.

Hmmm...the Harry Potter series rewritten by a deranged Calvinist...if I were any kind of writer, I might want to take that up as a challenge...

If [Rowling belongs to the Church of Scotland] is true, then it seems that Rowling has allowed her faith to strongly influence her work.
That implies a more direct connection than the one I got: that
Potter
and Calvinism both espouse a similar salvation-of-the-elect worldview, the difference being that Calvinists have put a bit more thought and indeed humanity and decency into their version. Their conclusions about how life works aren't the inadvertent result of an overlong fantasy series spinning out of an inexperienced writer's control.
Potter
would likely have ended up the same way if Rowling had never heard of Calvinism.

I actually don't think Calvinists are any more deranged than any other religious group. What would make Rowling's worldview deranged would be a conscious attempt to decontextualize Calvinist or most other religious beliefs into something secular, which I think everyone agrees probably did not happen.

at 14:27 on 2014-04-25• It's an extremely interesting and deep analysis ( not that everybody hadn't noticed, but now I have too )
• The "but of course Voldemort wouldn't repent" makes an interesting contrast with LOTR [ Tolkien being a Catholic ]. Here Saruman could really have repented ( after the Ents smashed Isengard ), it is not his 'nature' that prevents him too, only his choice ( I think LOTR would have been much better if he had but never mind that ). Gollum too could have if it hadn't been for Sam's hostility and his own reaction to it… they were really offered the choice.
• This "Rowlingian Calvinism", for want of a better term, sounds like a very good belief for the bad guys in a Fantasy novel…

New Book: Chapter Two
Why the hell not.  I’ve just rewritten this, so there hasn’t been time to stuff it with overwriting.  You can really tell that the prelude was written well before the book - and that the book has been worked over quite a bit.  I suspect there will be more changes, more or less significant (like Rev’s age, for example - he’s still young, but not that young), but this is, I think, the meat of the story.
Lots of fat to trim from these chapters; some are better than others.
Prelude
Chapter One
Chapter Three
Chapter Two
Thespasian looked for a great white horse.  The wide, cobbled streets – the ones not blocked with debris from artillery fire – were not the first place he expected to find her.  That would be too sensible.  Such was the perversity of his particular fortunes he searched them first nonetheless – those that he could reach.  There was still some concern he could get shot at, as news of the breaking of the siege would necessarily travel slowly to barricaded soldiers.
As for his own side, he only had to punch four soldiers in the head.  Only one was part of his command, and that one he punched not for inappropriate looting, but for falling over drunk in front of him.  The numbers he yelled at were uncountable.  He found the horse.  Overall a good record.
She was in a café, precisely as you wouldn’t expect to find a horse in a café tucked in the middle of a shady street.  Of course, it was one of the wider streets he searched, and of course, it was periolously deep in the city, if not actually past the line of safety.  She lowered her head and poked her nose at his pockets for treats, despite the fact that he never carried any.  Her unfailing faith that one day he would turn soft and coddling was an example of animal-kind’s superiority to humanity.  Furiously suppressing a swell of sentiment, he frowned severely at her as he scratched her ears and told himself she respected his disapproval.
Inside the café sat his primary concern, long polished boots up on a table, tiny cup in hand, the quizzical expression of a man trying to eat a lemon on his face.
“I can’t make the coffee, Thes,” he said, because Thespasian was doomed by God.  “I’ve seen them do it… I put the thingie in…” he gestured back at the pots over the counter, “and the beans, but it… really didn’t come out right.  I thought about asking, but…” and he shrugged, causing a little wave of shivers to go through the braiding hanging down from one epaulette.
Thes grunted at Anik, damned his life, and walked around the counter to make the coffee.  He noted, of course, the little pile of gold – enough for five pounds of coffee, with some random local currencies thrown in – sitting on the counter but didn’t touch it.  It was Anik’s.
Paying in Baathian money would be inconsiderate.  Paying just enough would be miserly.  Not paying would be theft.  That they had just conquered the damn place after seven months of tedious besieging and several pitched battles had no bearing at all, except that it made asking a local for help gauche, and having his horse shit between the tables, practical. Thes dumped beans in the grinder and started cranking.
“What’s that?” Anik asked.
“A grinder.”
“How do you know how to make the coffee?”
Thes did not dignify this with a response.
“What news?” Anik asked, after Thes brought over a little cup for each of them and sat down across from him.
“We conquered the city,” Thes said.
Anik raised his brows and spread his hands at the scene around them.
Thes shifted in his seat and took a sip of his coffee but the damn size of the damn cups meant that this delaying tactic wouldn’t work for long.
“You didn’t think of what to say on the way over?” Anik asked, taking a delicate sip himself, but Thes saw all the signs that his suspicions had been raised.
“I was busy.”
Anik’s brows fell into a hard line, ease leaving his face like leaves dashed off the ground in a gust. “Looting?”
Of course there was looting. That was half a soldier’s pay. Anik meant improper looting.
“Not ours,” Thespasian said, and tried to head off the storm descending as Anik swept his feet from the table, “and how long do you think they’ll stand that, anyway?”
To his credit, Anik paused, fury unfaded, until he had given the notion a moment of serious thought. “I shall have to change Bohdan’s mind.”
“You will never change Bohdan’s mind.”
“I shall have to try.”
Thespasian raised one finger, “The soldiers may not thank you if you succeed,” he raised another, “You cannot kill Bohdan.”
Anik gave him a light frown.
“You should not kill Bohdan,” he corrected.
The frown got a little deeper, then vanished, as Anik reclined back into his seat to consider.  “He is doing great work for Liberty.”
Thespasian sipped his little coffee cup and wondered if Bohdan had a will yet.
“It’s not the clothing, or the supplies, or the personal riches, Thes,” Anik said, “it’s the piceless art.  The temples ransacked.  The charitable homes and saints’ relics.  If it were only public government buildings, I would be best pleased, but I understand that the wealthy are targets for the people they have exploited, and I am with them, in principle.”
Thes didn’t even nod. He had heard the reasoning too many times.  He also knew that Bohdan was ordering his soldiers to retrieve him pricelss art and saints’ relics and temple goods, because he had bothered to ask a few of the soldiers about it before he punched them in the head.  It had been part of his policy, at this point, for a while. Thes had yet to tell Anik this, not because he wouldn’t find out eventually, and not out of a desire for Bohdan’s continued existence (though he needed to double check the propriety of a challenge issued between officers of their respective ranks and stations in the new system of martial organization).  Rather, he had worse news.
“I do wonder if raising the soldiers’ wages, or providing some kind of subsidy for their families would…”
One finger: “They make more by looting.”  Second finger: “We already don’t pay the officers well enough.”  Third finger: “The money we pay them in is worthless paper.”
Anik frowned again, glancing over at his pile of gold as if it were interesting rocks or leaves, such as children might barter.  This worried Thespasian.  Thespasian’s fortunes went at Anik’s did, and they’d already been through Anik giving up all of his wealth and rank once.  Undoubtedly, if reminded of how little he had liked Thespasian’s bone soup, even expertly prepared, Anik’s brows would furrow as if hearing some strange and savage mythology.  Then he would happily give it all up again to prove a point.
While Anik may not have liked Thes’ bone soup, Thes had hated it.  Thes hated that he hated it, and hated the whole situation, and hated it even more that he hated it more than Anik hated it because something like a forge of ever-burning virtue kept Anik warm while Thes, kept warm only by his complete sanity, shivered in the mud.  The fact that Anik felt doubly obliged by the Hell of Fraternal Love they shared to try to make it up to Thes, who ought to be better at putting up with it than some lord’s son, just made the whole thing indescribably worse.  Thes was left with the horrifying feeling that while he should have been mad at Anik for their situation, instead he was furious at the entire rest of the world for putting Anik in this position, and he hated that, too.  Oh, no – they would not be doing that again.
“Sivery’s retreated,” Thes said.  “Their armies have all withdrawn.”
Everything stilled. Thespasian would have even sworn the random pops of distant gunfire ceased as Anik watched him over his coffee cup, deep brown eyes still and shining as burnished, dark agate.  He thought he’d seen somebody looting a cup not unlike that an hour or so ago.  That soldier had been too far away to punch in the head, but Thes marked them for later.
“When?” Anik asked, tossing off the last of his coffee.
“Two weeks ago, at least,” Thespasian said.  News took time to travel, and with the capitol between this front and the one in Erro, the news had paused so it could come with new orders.  Thespasian didn’t have access to the orders, as a lowly sergeant, but news was water in the desert to those stranded in a siege, especially if it was good; they bathed in it with profligate joy.
None of the cold stillness has worn off Anik, but the sounds of the world crept in again as Thespasian waited like a bridegroom for his response.  If anyone could, Thes would have been the one to know how he would react to such news, yet Thes perched at the end of his seat, tiny cup clutched in both hands as if ready waiting to club a striking snake.  In truth, he understood little of Anik’s various passions even as they were – too much like in plays, which he despised, or poems, which he also despised, or novels, which he never read but would likely despise – but this particular one – poetically speaking – was a mystery fit for the gods.
Had it been but a year ago, Thes could see himself having to wrestle Anik to the ground to keep him from leaping onto Aster’s back and riding off to do something stupid (which would inevitably later be described by others as either courageous, heroic, or dashing, all words Thespasian – guess what – despised).  But a year ago, Papa Bel had been alive.  A year ago, he hadn’t yet been back to Baath’s verdant countryside, to see what happened when Liberty was refused.  Since a year ago, things had changed.  Were he inclined to listen to foolish feelings, Thes would have heard the note of sadness in his own thoughts.  He’d taken enough thoughtless elbows to the eyeball trying to stop Anik, though, that even had he heard it, notes of sadness could fuck off.
After a deep intake of breath, Anik asked, “What happened?”
“I don’t know,” Thes answered, “but they’ve withdrawn all their soldiers from the continent.  There was a battle.”
Anik’s hard stare fixed on him again – there were ‘battles’ and battles.  Thespasian’s mild shrug indicated that the gossip called this one a battle, indeed. It was, after all, covering the full retreat of a not-inconsiderable army from an unreliable allied shore under pursuit by a Baathian force driven by patriotic fervor and ripe with success.
Anik turned his coffee cup about on the table, eyes dropping to it as if it plotted against him.  It wasn’t safe to plot against Anik.  It might be easy, Thespasian thought begrudgingly, as it was always easy to plot against the honorable, but it wasn’t safe.
He looked back up at Thespasian.  Thespasian’s eyes narrowed, chin tucked to the side as if keeping a bead on a half-tamed horse.
“I want to know what happened,” Anik said.
Thespasian nodded, but didn’t quit glaring.
“I want to know what’s being done about it,” Anik said.
Again, Thespasian nodded. There were things Anik would hear that Thes hadn’t the rank for, but likewise, there were things Thes would hear that no soldier in their right mind would tell an officer of his caliber.
“I want to know what this means for the campaign – surely we’re going to reinforce our presence in Erro.”
Not so surely, Thes thought; they might have only half-heartedly supported Sivery’s (also half-hearted) attempt to keep Baath at bay, but they would undoubtedly resist Baath’s increasingly suspect march to spread ‘Liberation.’  It was hard to tell, these days, which way the government of Baath would jump, and even harder to tell if its armies would listen.  Even so, Erro was tempting – it had the paper-soft shell of a wasp’s nest.
This was all good, though. This was all a product of the officer Anik had become under the hard tutelage of this war (these wars?  This was also hard to tell).  These were not the questions of the impulsive soldier – and youth – he had been.
He stood, walking to his horse, and reflexively Thes stood after him, unconsciously easing into action.
“I also want to know who was there,” Anik said, as he stroked Aster’s nose.
Thespasian walked two steps, busily planning his missions, before this command stopped him.
It was hard to say what the look he gave Anik meant.  It was hard to say whether the despair which bloomed under it struck like buds fooled by an early thaw, or – and of this Thespasian became more and more convinced, as he watched Anik’s utter impassivity as he lead them out to the street – whether the despair was a simple premonition of what was to come.  Somehow, Thespasian thought, this was going to be bad. Very, very bad.
But now was not the time to say anything about it, for Anik mounted, that cold and – Thespasian courted death by thinking it – regal air of command rising about him like stone, and became wholly the General his mentor had trained him to be.  Anik-the-general could not be gainsaid.
“Thank you for the coffee, and the news” Anik said, giving him a nod, then he turned Aster and Anik-the-general rode off towards camp.
Thes saluted.  Couldn’t gainsay generals, but you sure as shit could salute idiots.

So! Episode 2 of Before the Storm! It was very good! If you haven't read my thoughts on Episode 1, here those are.
If you want an audio discussion about either episode, I've recorded podcasts with my girlfriend, @mollifiable, as well as musicians Riley Hawke and Koethe. Here’s what we discussed on Ep1, and here’s the podcast on Ep2. BEAR IN MIND I will be discussing a number of things from EPISODE 2, so you probably shouldn’t read this if you haven’t experienced it yet. There are some inherent problems I still have with this projects conception (which I got into in that first post back in September), but Epsiode 2 has gone a long way toward giving me faith in why this story is being made. Or, at the least, that it's being made with a lot of thought and care. I've played a LOT of story-focused, episode games, and honestly, I think this episode is one of the best I've ever experienced, overall. I still struggle with some elements of the story (ex. I just don't like Rachel as much as I think I'm 'meant to,' BUT I think that ties into what the overall story may be about), and I still feel frustrated that your team is being limited by the nature of the setup (why is this all happening over three days when it could’ve been over three years, for example), but Episode 2 just has so much good going for it and I felt like it really showed what can be done with a project like this. Like last time, I want to address this to Madeleine, Felice, and the entire team at Deck Nine directly – and point out how much it means to us that you guys actually reach back and communicate with us, even encouraging criticism. I'm proud of what your team has been able to accomplish with this episode and think it stands out in the genre in a lot of ways.
Let’s get to it.
Tumblr media
That being said, I do want to offer my criticisms, so let's just get those out of the way first. First off, Samuel – yeesh. Sorry, I just really didn't like the scene with Samuel. Part of it is his new voice actor just sounding more...creepy? I guess I'd say? But also, his manner of speech and the things he said felt out of place. Not just for his character but with the story in general. In LiS1, Samuel comes across as mentally different than those around him, almost like a sort of sage in a way, engaging with the world in a different way than those around him (there's a similar character in Supergiant's brilliant Pyre who comes to mind). But here, Samuel felt like a cross between a psychiatrist and a guy taking too many drugs? That's perhaps harsh, but especially given that his character model/rigging didn't seem to carry over properly, I was just rubbed the wrong way by his presence in this episode in a way that hasn't happened with any other recurring characters. I appreciate the intent I picked up from his scene – to remind us that there's more going on than just what we can see on the surface – but I felt like it missed the mark of who Samuel was as a character without really establishing why he would be different in this way three years in the past. On a related subject – the adult characters in this episode, or at least some of them, felt weird. MOST of them felt more like caricatures than actual characters. Wells felt fine, and I actually kind of PREFER this take on Wells because he feels LESS like a caricature and more like an actual principle. I can even kind of see a headcanon link between this interpretation of him and the version of him three years having just kind of shed away his decorum from the stress of managing a school undergoing so many changes and financial problems. I really felt for Joyce, and I felt that David's character was finally presented in a way that lacked the cliché “military” skew that LiS1 forced too hard while simultaneously giving the audience an understanding of precisely why his presence in the household would push Chloe so far away (though I still find much of the Joyce/David stuff odd here because we already know where this all leads and nothing here really seems to build anything new from that). Characters like Rachel's dad, the theater teacher, Samuel, Skip, Damon, and Sean Prescott all felt...a bit too cartoony in ways. Damon maybe least of all due to the intensity of that scene and the nice subtext we can pick up (after all, money is a realistic and pragmatic motive to drive one to aggression) In general, the adults felt flatter and more cartoony than I think works for this setting. Not to say they should NEVER be funny or anything, just that I was repeatedly taken out of the story by how jarringly one-dimensional a line was, or how flat a voice delivery was, etc. Fortunately, this problem doesn't really carry over to the teens, who are, of course, the focus of the narrative. I also noticed more moments in this episode where characters' eyes were uncanny, staring straight ahead in unnatural ways – or mouth movements being weird (Samuel being the biggest example, to the point that it jarred me out of the story and distracted from his dialogue). Minor complaint, all things considered, but worth pointing out as I didn't really notice this happen in episode 1, which makes me worry that maybe things got rushed a bit too much? (you guys did release this episode weeks earlier than expected) On the upside, though, this problem did NOT exist when it mattered the most, so at least that detail was put into the important moments. All right, last nitpick – I found the whole “drugging” thing re: the pre-play scene to be in bad taste. On the one hand, I LIKE the premise, and how it really does a fascinating thing with developing/contrasting/comparing Rachel and Victoria (in a way that requires knowledge of alternate events, something only a video game could do), but on the other hand...ya'll made drugging teen girls in an active, malicious way this...joke. While I do love that BtS has more comedy in its tone, I found turning Victoria's drug-induced passing out into a JOKE to be kind of offensive, especially given that she can get drugged and murdered in LiS1 (and Rachel AND Chloe both get drugged and/or murdered?), and just...yea. All in all, I think the concept of this scene works, it's the execution that makes it feel insensitive and kind of worrying. (ex. Victoria passes out and fucking NO ONE calls a doctor or tries to help her, the camera fucking PANS on her unconscious body like it's this joke and the way the whole thing is framed just invites laughter on something that kinda sorta shouldn't be funny given the full context of this story) Anyway, it's kind of like the wine scene in the first episode, but worse in terms of implications, I guess? I'm not THAT torn up over it since it's brief, and everyone's OK in the end, I presume, but it just feels a bit tone deaf when SO MUCH of this episode is SO GOOD. It really took me out of the experience – but the layered nature of it (how Rachel gets her way no matter what, how Rachel AND Victoria are both willing to drug each other, how Vic can be manipulated while Rachel can't) makes it really intriguing. I think the concept here was intriguing, but the execution on stuff like this could be handled more thoughtfully. I could get into pacing issues, I suppose, but honestly, I've already critiqued enough, and I think this episode was really good, so I don't want to get too down on the details when I'm sure others will get into this topic. (like the canon inconsistencies, they’re there, but aren’t really detracting from the good stuff)
OK! With all of that out of the way, let me get into what I loved about this episode, which was most of it. Episode 1 was unclear and uncertain in what it was trying to convey, which makes more sense now that we have Episode 2, which dives right into what this story seems to be about – passion, and the good and bad that comes from it. Passion, to be clear, being different from love. Love is steady, consistent, like a stream of water, while passion is fast and bright and sudden, like fire. I could get into the elemental symbolism you could correlate between wind, water, fire and Chloe, Max, and Rachel, but I'm sure folks have done this already. I do think it's still worth pointing out just how great a job you've done so far using fire as a metaphor for Rachel and Chloe's relationship, both within the story presented here and overarching into LiS as a whole. You managed to work it into the actual plot, as well, in a way that doesn't feel forced or thoughtless – an entire episode later and there are still consequences from it. Having just experienced the CA wildfires a half hour away from my home, I can appreciate a certain level of fear and awe at how much can be affected by fire, even the air itself, and just how quickly it can spread and how much damage it can do in a short time. The fact that the title screen itself it an analogy about passion makes me super excited at the potential for episode 3. Absolutely love that the title screen doubles as atmosphere AND symbolism. Specifically, I have to call out the dream sequence here as being quite awesome. From the moment I saw the burning car with a shadowed figure, I already knew what the visual reveal at the end of the scene was going to be, and was still thoroughly satisfied. I absolutely love LOVE the metaphor William presents about comparing/contrasting light and dark in terms of how both can cause us to lose ourselves, lose our ways, and be blinded. The way this correlates to Chloe's loss of William, Max, and Rachel (darkness) to how she can be blinded by light (passion for Rachel, even excitement about Max's power later on) is all encapsulated in a single bit of dialogue that communicates such an underexplored theme in the medium, and one that makes telling this story from a teenage perspective suddenly feel 100% sensible instead of just a coincidence. Telling a story diving into the theme of passion just wouldn't work the same from a character too young or too old, because it's this part of the human condition that we experience passion the deepest and the hottest. Which brings us to the fantastic play aspect, which is one of my favorite moments in all of LiS at this point. The layers of meaning at work here were genius. First off, it's all a play – an act. And Chloe is trying to keep up, while Rachel is clearly experienced with this. Secondly, the connections between relationships in The Tempest to the protagonists is great use of intertextual storytelling. Thirdly, highlighting a Shakespearean play, which highlights passion from teenage youths, yet another layer. Fourth, they go off script, which itself has really interesting connotations in terms of this game itself existing in the first place as an “off script” piece of the story, as well as how the content of their moment carries an unrealistic, impractical hopefulness to it that is inspiring, but still an act in a play, involving magic and fantasy. Fifth, concluding the scene with the way the play ends adds this really awesome extra layer of meta expression – Rachel as a character gets to be expressed and represented in a way she originally was not, with the help of fans of the LiS developing this prequel, but also fans of LiS breathing life into Rachel before this prequel existed; PLUS the prequel itself is a performance that you, the development team, are putting on for us, the audience. There's just so much going on here, and the musical choices helped seal the moment's emotional impact. Even as myself, coming from the perspective of not trusting Rachel's judgment/actions, I felt as if I finally had a 'moment' where I truly understood why Chloe was so swiftly enamored with Rachel. It reminded me of moments I've experienced in my own past, though nothing as 'magical' as this. It also just highlighted how Rachel's character has power and influence over those around her despite being so young. All in all, bravo. This scene came together fantastically, and I think it's one of the most thoughtfully put together scripted scenes I've ever seen in a video game. This was the moment I fell in love with this story – not because of AmberPrice but because it was so well put together by everyone involved. I think this will probably go down as the highlight of this game when all is said and done. To back things up a bit, I did enjoy the premise of the junkyard stuff. I really liked giving Chloe's character a bit of breathing room on her own – the kinds of things she thinks to herself while exploring the environment showed a bit of Max's influence on her still being present even as she's trying to forget Max. I liked that we could pick different objects to help decorate/fix the van, as well, but the flow of the scene would work better if we could do it all in one trip rather than taking two trips – I found myself disoriented after placing the battery into the car, and by that point had lost track of where specific objects were, whereas it would've been more fitting to maybe have Chloe make note of the items first, or even gather them all up into a pile and let the player choose from there. I predicted and felt satisfied by how the truck was utilized as an analogy for Chloe as a person – broken, banged up, abandoned, lost, but if given enough attention and care, could be back up and running. The therapy session Rachel and Chloe have was also nice at building their relationship further.
Something that wasn't as apparent in episode 1 because it simply needed time to grow was the whole way that Rachel is presented as someone who is flawed. Because the story is from Chloe's perspective, there's maybe too many limits on how this can be developed, though we'll see how the finale handles things, but I really liked that all of the flaws we already know about her character from stuff in LiS1 felt contextualized in this episode. She can be manipulative, short-sighted, impulsive, and even self-absorbed, but it's not malicious or even intentional all of the time. Rachel herself is in a similar position as Chloe – they're teenagers – she is still figuring herself out, what she really wants, who she really wants to be, and how she can achieve those things. All of my doubts, concerns, and fears about this relationship between them all feel validated by their dynamics, by the theming and foreshadowing, and yet it simultaneously makes sense why and how they'd end up together – out of teenage passion, and a shared sense of longing to feel both needed by someone else and taken care of by someone else. The scene after the play, in the street, had a great sense of aesthetic to it, which felt like it was from a teen romance film from the 80's or something. The imagery of the scene highlights the nature of this whole story – a splash of light along a dark road that is Chloe's teenage years. The multiple ways this scene can play out depending on previous choices was neat, too. I was especially intrigued by the possibility of making the “Friendship” choice in Ep1, then asking for a kiss here in this scene – there's this amazing bit of animation in Rachel's face that really shows her thought processes clicking together in an ambiguous way that really fits her character. I'm also super curious as to what will come of the bracelet bit, since Rachel surprisingly gives it to Chloe if you ask for it, despite the fact that we know she ultimately gives it to Frank. There's multiple possibilities of what that could entail, and I'm really interested in seeing how that plays out. This actually reminds me of how much I liked the way decisions from episode 1 have branched out here. Rather than decisions having a single static meaning later on, you have aspects from Episode 1 lead to different branching possibilities of how scenes play out. The outcomes are usually the same, but still, it makes the story feel more dynamic, and I like how these aren't always super obvious. There's a lot of examples of this, from telling Rachel that Chloe feels romantically or not, to stealing the money, to what you do WITH the money, and some other smaller things, too. Great work with this stuff, it helps us see different angles to the characters when we have these options, and highlights what LiS was originally about re: characters – perspective is everything. And yet, Rachel seems almost immune to things in a sense, which is appropriate given how her character works and how she influences those around her. I liked the scene with Frank in the RV and the way it contrasts and compares his future self to his past self. Which reminds me, this episode had a bit more interesting 'character development through environment,' which was a highlight of LiS1 that felt missing from Ep1 of Before the Storm. Whether it was Frank's RV, Elliot's dorm room, the Amber household, or, most poignantly, Drew's dorm room, you guys did a great job letting us learn more about the characters through the environments. While you could argue that it doesn't quite match Chloe's character the way it does Max (and I'd argue that the whole nature of trying to socialize and make friends itself already is kind of against Chloe's character in Ep1), I think it works well enough and just makes sense from a game design standpoint. I liked that we got more opportunities for graffiti in ways that weren't just straight up wall graffiti (ex. Crossword, drawing on the newspaper photo). I glossed over this last time, but part of what I've been frustrated by with Before the Storm is the way Chloe at 16 years old...already feels like Chloe at 19, but slightly more awkward. Episode 2 helped resolve some of this by putting her outside of her comfort zone more and highlighting her vulnerability, cynicism, and uncertainty (whereas Chloe at 19 kind of doesn't give a shit and dives head first into everything and doesn't care what anyone thinks). I also really love the multiple ways you've referenced that Chloe was originally a “nerd” like Max, and has gradually been straying away from that – and yet, it's still part of who she is (and ends up showing itself later on in LiS1, like how she seems to know more about time travel theory than Warren does). In particular, I loved how she pulls up different characters' web search histories – something that doesn't specifically take much effort, but that most people wouldn't think to do. This in and of itself was a really clever way of adding more to character development for those involved. (“why won't puppy eat steak” is hilarious to me and I can't get over it for some reason) The entire scene with Mikey, Drew, and Damon was wonderful. I loved the multiple outcomes and how none of them are specifically good, and any of them can feel in character for Chloe. I think Damon's character feels a little one dimensional here, BUT the context makes sense – he wants his fucking money. He's collecting debts after suffering a huge monetary loss. Of course he's going to be single-minded. As a side note, I loved the small but significant bit re: Damon's e-mail to Frank. Props to whoever came up with that. What a brilliantly subtle way of telling us so much about Damon's true character and his relationship with Frank. Going back to the conflict at the dorm, I loved that you took a bully character who appeared simple and effortlessly fleshed him out enough to feel legitimately believable with real motives. I loved how I was able to figure out the passcode to his lock organically given everything I had seen, and how I then used that knowledge to express what I felt would be in his best interests in the conflict – even though, as my girlfriend pointed out, it might not have been the best long-term outcome. I wish we'd seen more of Mikey and Steph, but what was there was still good. Steph's brief convo with Chloe I saw coming in a good way, and I really liked how you presented it. I liked the bits we got with Samantha and Skip, as well, thought I'm wondering where you're going with Samantha and Nathan. I was actually really frustrated with the Backtalk sequence with Skip, but then, I think that was the whole point. Speaking of, I really didn't like Backtalk in Ep1, but it was overall much better here. In Ep1, Backtalk was like some weird 'Be an Asshole' thing, and it felt weird how the game inherently encouraged you to do this. In Ep2, there were multiple times where I felt unsure if Backtalk was 'the best' way to go, and even then, most of its uses felt much more organic. It wasn't just about being a jerk to make someone feel bad, there was often some organic purpose to it – talking Victoria out of being in the play in a way that made her feel like it was her own decision; trying to get info out of Frank; trying to get into a dorm you weren't supposed to be in; trying to stick up for Rachel in the face of discipline, or trying to help her confront her father. In every case, there was an interpersonal motivation – Chloe wasn't doing it for something she specifically wanted, or just to make someone feel bad, but to try and do something for someone else. Also, they felt more like arguments, or ways of manipulating someone, rather than straight up insults. In some ways, it reminded me of things in TellTale's The Walking Dead Season 2, using more manipulative dialogue to resolve a situation rather than just brute-forcing things. This also contributes toward the theme of 'influence' regarding Chloe being influenced by Rachel so quickly and easily that she's even picking up some of Rachel's tactics (which, one could argue, she uses later on when she's older). This being said, I'm hoping that in Episode 3 we're given a more high-stakes situation that can be resolved using those more manipulative mannerisms, which gives the Backtalk mechanic a “climax” of sorts.
I like the way that you've been able to build this sense of supernatural occurrences without actually showing anything supernatural. The All-Seeing-Eye, the recurring Raven imagery, the weird shit going on with Chloe and others seeming to be having mysterious, prophetic dreams (even Elliot and Frank seem to be having them), the way the ash fall at the end of the episode foils the snowfall at the end of Ep1 of Life is Strange. This builds to a fascinating moment at the end of the episode where, for the first time, perspective SHIFTS from Chloe to Rachel, only for a few seconds, but in a really neat way that leads you to FEEL like something supernatural is about to happen, only for it not to. In a way, this feels like what your overall story could be about in a sense, though it'd be downright odd at this point to have NO answers or resolution regarding what I described above. One of the original game's biggest flaws was how it drummed up mystery only to leave things unexplained or unresolved in ways that damaged the actual plot. Dream sequences don't necessarily do this, but with how much emphasis you've put on them and the Raven/Eye imagery, I feel like there must be a purpose you have here – especially if members of your staff are getting ravens tattooed on their bodies. Naturally, Rachel's mom seems tied to all of this, if not the origin point of it. And I can't help but wonder if we'll even get a perspective shift near the end of the story from Rachel's point of view, if only to help imply or insinuate some things that tie into unanswered elements of Max's story. Speaking of Max, I was much more happy with the 'letters' in this episode, as they spend very little time needlessly bashing a character who wasn't even present, and more time on Chloe quickly becoming obsessed with Rachel – which all makes sense with the arc you seem to be going for. I liked the extra allusions to Chloe's future with Max, such as the maze and William's remark about a “beauty” to come in the future. It's such a complicated thing to tackle – and trust me, I've spent two years and hundreds of thousands of words trying to tackle it myself with these same characters – but I finally have come to a place where I can appreciate the balance you've managed to find between supporting the good elements Chloe and Rachel had going for them, while also implying the bad elements and the reasons why Chloe would develop feelings for Max later on. On a personal level, I relate with Chloe a lot in regards to her relationships (I relate with Max in a lot of ways, too, but that's a separate matter). I have lived through both long term and short term experiences of passion, romantically and platonically. And I have been romantically involved with people who remind me of Rachel. And I think that's part of why I just...don't like her, personally. BUT I am at a place now, after this episode, where I like her as a CHARACTER, even if I don't like her as a fictional person. I never can fully let my guard down around her, but can totally understand why Chloe would (and did), and have been there. And now that I have the context of this episode, I can finally start to see what 'the point' of this story seems to be, which makes me very curious to see how it is resolved. Lastly, again, great job using mocap and facial animation to heighten realism for a lot of scenes. While I noticed more “flat” moments than before, it never detracted from the important moments having that level of detail to make them bring out an extra layer of inevitability. From Chloe knocking at a dartboard to finger-gun gestures, to subtle but complex expressions, just a lot of great expressive details going on here. On that note, I noticed a real improvement in Rhianna’s performance. She felt like she wasn’t trying to mimic Ashly Burch or Ellen Page and was instead just finding her own interpretation of the role, and it works MUCH better. In a way, I still feel a constant sense of ‘this isn’t exactly Chloe’ but not in a bad way, just a...different way. Instead of feeling distracted by her actress being different, I felt instead like I was being more absorbed into this alternate interpretation of the character. Both Hannah and Ashly needed some time to fill into their roles before ‘the good stuff’ really came out in their performances, so I’m really looking forward to what Rhianna might pull off in Episode 3, and what she can do in the future after this role, when she isn’t burdened by the complexities of this kind of situation. I could go on, but I've ranted stream-of-conscious style long enough. I still have some more broad strokes issues with this game’s narrative, but then again, I have issues with the original game’s, as well -- and this story isn’t done yet, so I want to wait until I have the full context before I comment on those broad-scope design elements. I hope at least some of what I've written here is helpful to your team, and that my critical comments highlight just how good a job you guys did with this second entry. Regardless of how I end up feeling about Episode 3 of Before the Storm, I am really happy for your team and what they've pulled off here, and am very supportive of what you seem to be trying to do, as delicate a balancing act as it surely is.

The Sad Decline of Economic Literacy at the New York Times
Every so often, I mock the New York Times for biased or sloppy analysis.
Claiming Medicaid cuts in a piece that shows rising outlays for the program.
Asserting that government schools are “starved of funding” when taxpayer subsidies actually have skyrocketed.
Claiming that budget-cutting austerity nations are doing worse than “stimulus” nations, but getting the numbers backwards.
Writing that the sequester will mean “deep automatic spending cuts” when the budget actually will climb by $2.4 trillion.
Claiming that Italy is more prosperous than the United States and that there is less poverty.
Asserting that U.S. multinationals pay little tax on foreign-source income, but forgetting to include the taxes paid to foreign governments.
Now there’s a new column by David Leonhardt that cries out for correction.
He’s very upset that upper-income people are enjoying higher incomes over time.
A…team of inequality researchers…has been getting some attention recently for a chart… It shows the change in income between 1980 and 2014 for every point on the distribution, and it neatly summarizes the recent soaring of inequality. …the very affluent, and only the very affluent, have received significant raises in recent decades. This line captures the rise in inequality better than any other chart or simple summary that I’ve seen. …only very affluent families — those in roughly the top 1/40th of the income distribution — have received…large raises. …The basic problem is that most families used to receive something approaching their fair share of economic growth, and they don’t anymore.
And here’s the chart that ostensibly shows that the economy is broken.
And what is the solution for this alleged problem? Class-warfare taxation and bigger government, of course.
…there is nothing natural about the distribution of today’s growth — the fact that our economic bounty flows overwhelmingly to a small share of the population. Different policies could produce a different outcome. My list would start with a tax code that does less to favor the affluent, a better-functioning education system, more bargaining power for workers and less tolerance for corporate consolidation.
Whenever I see this type of data, I’m automatically suspicious for two reasons.
The people at various income levels in 1980 aren’t the same as the people at those income levels in 2014. In other words, there is considerable income mobility, with some high-income people falling to the middle of the pack, or even below, and some low-income people climbing the middle of the income distribution, or even higher. At the very least, this type of chart exaggerates the degree to which “the rich are getting richer.”
Moreover, rich people getting rich doesn’t imply that poor people are losing income. This chart shows that all income percentiles generally enjoy more income with each passing year, so it isn’t grossly misleading like the charts that incorrectly imply income gains for the rich are at the expense of the poor. Nonetheless, a reader won’t have any way of knowing that more inequality and poverty reduction can go hand in hand.
But I think this chart from the New York Times inadvertently shows something very interesting.
As shown in the excerpt above, Mr. Leonhardt wants us to look at this data and support bigger government and class warfare.
Yet look at the annual data. The chart above has the numbers for 1980 and 2014. To the right, I’ve put together the numbers for 1987, 1996, and 2004.
One obvious conclusion is that prosperity (as shown by rising income levels) was much more broadly and equally shared in the 1980s and 1990s, back when the economy was moving in the direction of free markets and smaller government under both Reagan and Clinton.
But look at what happened last decade, and what’s been happening this decade. Government has been expanding (as measured by falling scores from Economic Freedom of the World).
And that’s the period, thanks to Bush-Obama statism, when lower-income people began to lag and income gains were mostly concentrated at the top of the income redistribution.
As the very least, this certainly suggests that Leonhardt’s policy agenda is misguided. Assuming, of course, the goal is to enable more prosperity for the less fortunate.
I’ll add another point. I suspect that big income gains for the rich in recent years are the result of easy-money policies from the Federal Reserve, which have – at least in part – pushed up the value of financial assets.
The bottom line is that Leonhardt seems motivated by ideology, so he bends the data in hopes of justifying his leftist agenda.
What makes this sad is that the New York Times used to be far more sensible.
Back in 1982, shortly after the Professors Hall and Rabushka unveiled their plan for a flat tax, here’s what the New York Times opined.
Who can defend a tax code so complicated that even the most educated family needs a professional to decide how much it owes? …President Reagan’s tax package will eventually roll back rates to the level of the late 1970’s, but it will not simplify the code or rid it of provisions that penalize hard work and reward unproductive investment. …the income base that is taxed has been so eroded by exceptions and preferences that the rates on what is left to tax must be kept high. Thus, the tax on an extra dollar of income for a typical family earning $20,000 is 28 percent and progressively higher for the more affluent. …The most dramatic fresh start, without changing the total amount collected, would be a flat-rate tax levied on a greatly broadened income base. Senator Helms of North Carolina would rid the law of virtually every tax preference and tax all income at about 12 percent. Representative Panetta of Cali-fornia would retain a few preferences and tax at a flat 19 percent. Either approach would greatly improve the efficiency of the system, simplifying calculations and increasing the incentive to earn.
And here’s what the editors wrote about Governor Jerry Brown’s modified flat tax in 199s. They started by praising the core principles of the flat tax.
Taking Jerry Brown seriously means taking his flat tax proposal seriously. Needlessly, he’s made that hard to do. By being careless, the former California Governor has bent a good idea out of shape. …Mr. Brown’s basic idea — creating a simplified code that encourages saving — is exactly right. …The present tax code is riddled with wasteful contradictions and complexity. For example, profit from corporate investment is taxed twice — when earned by the corporation and again when distributed to shareholders. That powerfully discourages savings and investment — the exact opposite of what the economy needs to grow. The remedy is, in a word, integration, meshing personal and corporate codes so that the brunt of taxes falls on consumption, not saving. …there is a reform that achieves all these objectives. Robert Hall and Alvin Rabushka, economists at the Hoover Institution, have proposed an integrated code that applies a single rate to both personal and corporate income. Their plan wipes away most deductions and exemptions, permitting a low tax rate of 19 percent. …Under the Hall-Rabushka plan, individuals would pay taxes on earnings and corporations would pay tax on interest, dividends and profits. That way, every dollar of income would be taxed once and only once.
And they rightly criticized Governor Brown for violating those principles.
Jerry Brown borrowed some of the elements of Hall-Rabushka. He too would eliminate wasteful exemptions, adopt a single rate and favor saving by exempting corporate investment. But at that point, he turns glib. He would impose on corporations a value-added tax, similar to a national sales tax. That eliminates the elegant symmetry of Hall-Rabushka. Indirectly, Mr. Brown’s variation would tax some income twice — which is why his supposed 13 percent rate would collect revenue equal to about 20 percent of total income.
Wow, this isn’t what I would write, but it’s within shouting distance.
The editors back then understood the importance of low marginal tax rates and they recognized that double taxation is a bad thing.
Now check out what the New York Times believes today about tax reform.
First and foremost, the editors want more money taken from the productive economy to expand the D.C. swamp.
Real reform would honestly confront the fact that in the next decade we will need roughly $4.5 trillion more revenue than currently projected to meet our existing commitment…. Even more would be needed if the government were to make greater investments.
And even though class-warfare taxation is unlikely to generate much revenue, the editors want both higher tax rates and more double taxation.
…it would make sense to increase the top rates on them and eliminate a break on income from investments. …the richest 1 percent pay 33 percent of their total income in taxes; if rates were changed so they paid 40 percent, it would generate $170 billion of revenue in the first year.
The editors want to take one of the most anti-competitive features of the current system and make it even worse.
It would also be a good idea to scale back accelerated depreciation allowances that let businesses write off investments faster than assets actually wear out. Speedy write-offs for luxuries like corporate jets could be eliminated altogether.
They also want to further undermine the ability of U.S. companies to compete on a level playing field in foreign markets.
…they should agree to close…the ability of corporations to defer tax on profits earned abroad.
In a display of knee-jerk statism, the editors also want new tax burdens to finance an ever-larger burden of government. Such as an energy tax.
New forms of taxation are also needed. Even prominent Republicans like James Baker III, George Shultz and Henry Paulson Jr. support a carbon tax imposed on emissions to reduce greenhouse gases. …revenue generated by carbon taxes could be used for other purposes as well, including investments in renewable energy and public transportation.
And a tax on financial transactions.
Revenue can also be raised by imposing a tax on the trading of stocks, bonds and derivatives. …Estimates show that a financial transaction tax of even 0.01 percent per trade ($10 on a $100,000 trade) could raise $185 billion over 10 years, enough to finance prekindergarten for 3- and 4-year olds, with money left over.
But the granddaddy of new taxes would be the value-added tax, a money machine for bigger government.
A value-added tax would be akin to a national sales tax, but harder to evade than traditional sales taxes and thus an efficient revenue raiser.
I’m genuinely curious whether there is any type of tax increase the NYT wouldn’t support.
But that’s not really the point of this column. The real lesson is that it’s sad that the editors have gone from being rationally left to being ideologically left.
P.S. I confess that I especially enjoy when the New York Times inadvertently publishes pieces that show the benefits of free markets and personal liberty.
Accidentally showing the superiority of funded private retirement systems.
Revealing how feminist policies backfire against women.
Unintentionally showing the folly of gun control.
Which is sort of what happened with Leonhardt’s data, which shows more broadly shared prosperity when economic liberty was increasing.
This is a guest post by Dan Mitchell “a high priest of light tax small state libertarianism”

Do You Really Need SEO Services for Your Business?
The inquiry turns up commonly. Many people have been melted by Search Engine Optimization Providers, however, several have actually additionally been rewarded by Search Engine Optimization Services. Like any service transaction or acquisition, you should just invest your cash when you really feel comfortable. Your comfort area ought to draw from various dependencies, such as exactly how well do you understand this organization, the length of time have you been associating with he or she or entity, what is your impression, just how do you personally really feel about this person or entity capability to give this solution, and also exactly how well have you done your research.
Tumblr media
The truth concerning SEO solutions is that it is normally not hard work, but that does not suggest its simple. It still takes time, devotion, initiative, approach, method, approach, skill, and experience to do quality Search Engine Optimization services. Any individual can use Search Engine Optimization services because it is within your reach to discover, yet not every person can apply the sensible technique to make Search Engine Optimization work. That is why Search Engine Optimization designers are needed to accomplish the nearly difficult, however, the concern is just how do you know you are making the right option as well as not overpaying for SEO solutions?
I can honestly state generally Search Engine Optimization service providers are on the up and up that desire absolutely nothing greater than to do expert organization and also give high-quality Search Engine Optimization solutions. Identifying every shady Search Engine Optimization solution may not be possible, however, I have actually some suggested recommendations which ought to help anyone obtain a reasonable as well as the quality rate for SEO services.
- Establish on your own a "sensible" advertising budget plan as well as goal
- Look around
- Do not buy until you really feel comfortable
- Remember "affordable does not always mean better"
- Request references/ recommendations/ portfolio
- Confirm recommendations/ referrals/ portfolio
- Request analytical growth as well as a report card
Set Yourself a Realistic Advertising Budget Plan and Objective
This merely indicates do not kid yourself as well as think you can pay $200 and overnight you will make thousands. Rather, produce a budget plan depending on your marketing requires, competitive market, predicted the outcome, and also the length of time. If you are searching for your site to rank in the Top 10 search engine result web page for a specific key phrase or key phrases then anticipate to pay in the thousands, often times tens of thousands, for top quality, expert, as well as reliable SEO solutions, almost always relying on the competitiveness of the keywords. If you want to place in the leading 10 for the keyword phrase "Google", this for the most part difficult, but I make sure there are some SEO business that will approve the difficulty, yet will charge in the thousands if not millions to attempt this crazy advertising and marketing goal.
Search
Find the most appealing Digital Marketing in San Jose and also compare those to various other competitive Search Engine Optimization services. Do not go for "cheap" or "cost-effective", yet go for "efficient" and also "method". Anybody can do SEO job, yet not everyone can boost outcomes utilizing Search Engine Optimization solutions. This is because SEO has to do with technique as well as approach. It's not around simply tossing thousands of links around the internet as well as relaxing waiting for the surge. Its, in fact, a lot extra complicated than that, as it has to do with having a method, strategy, and one-upmanship. You need to locate Search Engine Optimization solutions which obey this principle and can use you the critical roadmap you require for success.
Don't Buy Till You Really Feel Comfy
You must constantly really feel comfortable with delegating your loan into a San Jose SEO Agency provider paws. If you have unique requirements such as you want to sign a contract, you want a specific pay schedule, or you have any questions, make certain you get the answer as well as fit with the forecasted result after that progress. I directly recommend obtaining an agreement which details the predicted result and also any other bullet points, then also check out the repercussions or opportunities if the projected result is not met.
Keep in mind "Economical Does Not Always Mean Much Better"
This is a caveat emptor notification. When someone supplies $20 SEO solutions and even $200 Search Engine Optimization solutions, I would certainly state "caveat emptor". There might be a handful of highly competent SEO suppliers who can use your SEO services at a discount or for very low rates, however, the majority of the moment these providers either do not know their solution well worth or know precisely what they are doing, yet might have had a fortunate touch. You will have to pay top dollar or strongly, yet still affordable for top quality, tactical, and also experienced SEO solutions. SEO designers are what I like to call them. These are Search Engine Optimization's that comprehend the SEO principle, that leader SEO method, as well as who don't always comply with the fad, yet know the patterns.
Tumblr media
The majority of the Search Engine Optimization designers are not going to be cheap, however well worth every dollar invested. If you take into account other marketing and advertising systems, such as television broadcast marketing, print marketing, large tradeshow/fair booth advertising and marketing, and so on web marketing as well as SEO price peanuts compared to these other advertising methods as well as have a farther audience reach. Search Engine Optimization services can conveniently cost between $5,000-$ 25,000, it can also be much more than this, depending upon your requirements, however, this is even more cost-effective and cheaper than other advertising and marketing platforms. So, next time you believe that SEO service cost too much, think about the other techniques of marketing as well as their prices, together with ROI (ROI). Search Engine Optimization solutions come out on top every time when compared against these other marketing systems.
Request for Recommendations/ Recommendations/ Profile
Any kind of Search Engine Optimization provider ought to be able to point you to their certifying job. An SEO company needs to be able to present you with affectionate websites which they have executed SEO work with. This can also be the SEO company individual web site, they should be able to point you to their positions in the search engine in addition to some result was driven Search Engine Optimization job within the site or across the web.
Confirm References/ References/ Portfolio
Confirming details is not constantly very easy or accomplishable. You need to attempt to connect and validate what you can. If a questionable Search Engine Optimization service was going to rip-off, after that I make certain this is where they would certainly begin, with endorsements. I recommend verifying what you can, however, don't get bewildered with recommendations because it may be the questionable SEO company giving self-appreciation. I actually have some good confirmation suggestions, yet that's an additional article all within itself.
Request Analytical Development & Progression Information
The SEO solution campaign ought to consist of routine progress/performance reports so you can track your website progress. Tracking your site progression is very important in lots of ways. First, it informs if the SEO designer is doing their task. Second, it tells you if the Search Engine Optimization techniques, method, as well as technique is functioning or otherwise. Third, it informs you just how well the internet search engine is reciprocating your SEO efforts. As well as lastly, it informs you how much progress is being made and at what rate. All of this sophisticated reporting information and also pattern tracking can give you an overview of your website possibility while offering you the opportunity to style or redesign your touchdown web pages to increase your ROI (ROI).
Tumblr media
Okay, to cover it up, simply make sure you stay out of worn-out net areas and when making any type of online deal, do your research initially. Additionally, keep in mind "economical does not equivalent far better". Think about it, would certainly you instead pay in the thousands to one Search Engine Optimization business for top quality SEO job, which will certainly generate outcomes and boost your site overall performance or would certainly you instead pay inexpensive $200 to various SEO's that do not ever before actually provide you the results you deserve. If an SEO designer can raise your website sales as well as direct exposure by 80% without your website ever before arriving 10 search engine result after that you still obtained a bargain. This is the effect of proficient and knowledgeable Search Engine Optimization solutions. The only difference in between your internet site and also the internet sites in the leading 10, is those websites have Search Engine Optimization engineers working for them that comprehend Search Engine Optimization.

FRIENDLY PSA TO ALL TRUMP-VOTING, LGBT HATING, HARDCORE CHRISTIANS OUT THERE
We Satanists aren’t bad people. Quite the contrary. We’re much better than you. Where you have your 10 Commandments, we have 7 basic tenets to follow.
#1 - “One should strive to act with compassion and empathy towards all creatures in accordance with reason.”
#2 - “The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.”
#3 - “One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.”
#4 - “The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo your own.”
#5 - “Beliefs should conform to our best scientific understanding of the world. We should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit our beliefs.”
#6 - “People are fallible. If we make a mistake, we should do our best to rectify it and resolve any harm that may have been caused.”
#7 - “Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.”
Extension: there are two types of Satanism, one is the Satanist Temple (TST) and one is LaVeyan Satanism, created by Anton LaVey. The two are just as similar as they are different, one of the key differences being that LaVeyan tenets are much more extensive.
There are 3 sets of tenets, the Nine Satanic Statements, the Eleven Satanic Rules Of The Earth, and the Nine Satanic Sins.
-
The Nine Satanic Statements
#1 - Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence.
#2 - Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams.
#3 - Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit.
#4 - Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates.
#5 - Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek.
#6 - Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires.
#7 - Satan represents man as just another animal who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development”, has become the most vicious animal of all.
#8 - Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification.
#9 - Satan has been the best friend the church has ever had, as he has kept it in business all these years.
-
11 Satanic Rules Of The Earth
#1 - Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
#2 - Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
#3 - When in another’s lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
#4 - If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
#5 - Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
#6 - Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
#7 - Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
#8 - Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
#9 - Do not harm little children.
#10 - Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
#11 - When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they do not stop, destroy them.
-
The Nine Satanic Sins
#1 - Stupidity: “It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.”
#2 - Pretentiousness: “Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn’t applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone’s made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.”
#3 - Solipsism: “Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.” It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.”
#4 - Self-deceit: “We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cowspresented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it’s fun, and with awareness. But then, it’s not self-deceit!”
#5 - Herd Conformity: “It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.”
#6 - Lack of Perspective: “You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints—know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.”
#7 - Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies: “Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it’s something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.”
#8 - Counterproductive Pride: “Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you’ve painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.”
#9 - Lack of Aesthetics: “Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasing—it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.”
LaVey states that the Nine Satanic Sins are personality traits that prevent you from being successful and reaching your goals, rather than disobeying God’s law.
And there’s also this thing called “Pentagonal Revisionism” which is a five step program, not for the self, but for society.
#1 - Stratification: “The point on which all the others ultimately rest. There can be no more myth of equality for all—it only translates to mediocrity and supports the weak at the expense of the strong. Water must be allowed to seek its own level without interference from apologists for incompetence. No one should be protected from the effects of his own stupidity.”
#2 - Strict taxation of all churches: “If churches were taxed for all their income and property, they’d crumble overnight of their own obsolescence, and the National Debt would be wiped out as quickly. The productive, the creative, the resourceful should be subsidized. So long as the useless and incompetent are getting paid, they should be heavily taxed.”
#3 - No tolerance for religious beliefs secularized and incorporated into law and order issues: “To re-establish Lex Talionis would require a complete overturning of the present in-justice system based on Judeo-Christian ideals, where the victim/defender has been made the criminal. Amnesty should be considered for anyone in prison because of his alleged “influence” upon the actual perpetrator of the crime. Everyone is influenced in what he or she does. Scapegoating has become a way of life, a means of survival for the unfit. As an extension of the Judeo-Christian cop-out of blaming the Devil for everything, criminals can gain leniency, even praise, by placing the blame on a convenient villain. Following the Satanic creed of “Responsibility to the responsible,” in a Satanic society, everyone must experience the consequences of his own actions—for good or ill.”
#4 - Development and production of artificial human companions: “The forbidden industry. An economic “godsend” which will allow everyone “power” over someone else. Polite, sophisticated, technologically feasible slavery. And the most profitable industry since T.V. and the computer.”
#5 - The opportunity for anyone to live within a total environment of his or her choice, with mandatory adherence to the aesthetic and behavioral standards of same: “Privately owned, operated and controlled environments as an alternative to homogenized and polyglot ones. The freedom to insularize oneself within a social milieu of personal well-being. An opportunity to feel, see, and hear that which is most aesthetically pleasing, without interference from those who would pollute or detract from that option.”
I want everyone to note the two beliefs that are undeniably the same: “One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone" and “Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.” ONE OF THE KEY BELIEFS OF SATANISM IS DON’T RAPE, RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE’S BODIES.
To the Christians who wish to practice their religion in peace, and just want people to respect their beliefs, my humblest apologies if I offended you. To you gay hating, extremist, Trump supporting pieces of white supremacist shit, go fuck yourself.
I don’t mean to drag anyone away from their religion, merely clear the bad name given to mine.
Oh, and by the way, Satanists do not view Satan as a Creator God, but as a representation of the difference between peace and freedom.
Basically, he was the original rebel.

What You Need to Succeed in Investing (Hint: It’s Not Genius Brain)
“Hey Vishal, have you read about how Albert Einstein lost so much money in the stock market?” asked my friend Ravi as we met for dinner over the weekend.
“Yes Ravi,” I said. In fact, he lost most of his winnings from the 1921 Nobel Prize in the stock market crash of 1929.”
“Wow!” Ravi exclaimed. “And we are talking about one of the genius minds to have ever walked this planet.
“Right Ravi. And I’m sure you’ve also heard about Mr. Newton, who was wiped out while chasing the stock market bubble in 18th century England.”
“Yes Vishal, you only told me about Mr. Newton’s misdoings when we met a few months back.”
“Sometimes I fail to understand,” Ravi continued, “how men with such high levels of intelligence fail at such petty things as the stock market, even when you hear of investment stories about individuals who’ve made fortunes because of exceptional insights or sheer genius!”
“Because, my dear friend, the best rewards in investing don’t generally go to investors with the smartest brains but to those with the strongest stomachs.”
“Stomach? Are you serious?”
“Yes, Ravi. The famous American fund manager Peter Lynch said it wonderfully that the key organ for investing is the stomach, not the brain.”
“Yeah, but why the stomach? We aren’t talking about gastronomy here but investing!”
“Right, but haven’t you heard of this phrase – Do you have the stomach for….?”
“Yes, I have. But how does it relate to investing Vishal?”
“It does, Ravi. Most of sensible investing is about going against the crowd. Often, it also requires you to face constant criticism and ridicule. You also need to stay away from the noise to be able to think rationally. You may also have to bear being called a loner. In such times, you must have the stomach to keep playing the game without getting perturbed by what others are wanting and asking you to do. You may have the brain to know what’s right and not right for you. But it’s your stomach that leads you to act on your conviction.”
“That sounds too much of a task, Vishal. How does one go about building a strong stomach to deal with such situations? Like you learn to develop your brain, is there a process to develop your stomach in your sense of the word?”
“Oh yes, there are a few things you can do to build strength in your stomach to be able to invest well.”
“And what are those few things Vishal?”
“Well Ravi, the first thing is that you should invest with your own money. Understand the fundamentals of investing, and then use your own money to apply those fundamentals. Never borrow money to play the markets, for then you are setting yourself up for a disaster in case the market takes a hit and you are leveraged up. You see, many people who lose confidence and panic in a market downfall are those who either don’t know what they have been doing or have invested using borrowed money that they must repay.”
“Agreed, Vishal. I invest my own money. What next?”
“Think and act long term.”
“Well, this sounds good when your stocks are doing well. But when everyone’s losing money, how do you think and act long term?”
“True. It’s difficult to act sanely in those times. And that’s why I have always believed that you need a strong stomach than a sharp brain to do well in the stock market in the long run.”
“Please explain, Vishal!”
“Look at how Einstein and Newton lost so much money in stocks. They had super sharp brains, but they still lost a lot, right? Look at how the geniuses at LTCM fund, including a Nobel prize winner, got wiped out in the last 1990s. Look at how Mensa, the high IQ society, terribly underperformed the markets by averaging just 2.5% return during a 15-year period when the S&P 500 did 15.3%. These are all instances that tell you why big brains won’t get you far in stock market investing.”
“Good examples Vishal. I remember you also told me something that Mr. Buffett had said about high IQ?”
“Yes, Ravi. He said that if you are in the investment business and have an I.Q. of 150, sell 30 points to someone else. In fact, in the same breath, Mr. Buffett also said that one needs an emotional stability and inner peace about his investment decisions.”
“Right, emotional stability and inner peace…”
“Yes, and that’s what a strong stomach helps you with – emotional stability and the ability to maintain inner peace during the outer panic.”
“So what use is the brain when it comes to investing?”
“Oh yes, you need some level of intelligence to understand the investment principles and what could get you into trouble, and understand the importance of having a long-term perspective. So, the brain has an important role to play too. But as I’ve told you a few times in the past, our brain has several leakages that scientists call ‘biases’, which lead us to react emotionally, and which is not a good way to go about investing sensibly.”
“Yes Vishal, as I have experienced first-hand, a greedy response when everything seems bright in the stock market, and a fearful one during falling stock prices is not generally helpful.”
“You’re a smart investor, Ravi,” I said with a smile.
“Yes Vishal, and like you do, I have also started living with low expectations that has been of great help, both in investing and in life.”
“Great, Ravi. Living with low expectations helps us lead peaceful lives. But we must still expect the unexpected because it helps us deal better when the unexpected actually happens.”
“Why do you say so?”
“Well, look back at the history of the market. There’s always a bear market waiting behind a bull market. And there’s always a bull market waiting behind a bear market. That’s just the nature of the stock market. If you are not surprised when it happens, you know you have a strong stomach.”
“Always remember that when it comes to investing in the stock market, it is often going to be scary, and there will always be something to worry about. But if you have a strong stomach, which will happen if you invest your own money, invest for the long run, invest in high-quality businesses, and always expect the unexpected, you will most likely do well.”
“That’s a good statement to remember, Vishal.”
“Yes Ravi. I am sure you will.”
