Wait you said thats breaching big boundaries but didn’t Harry’s therapist came to his show? Is that a breach?
Hi! I hadn’t heard that Harry’s therapist came to his show. If that’s true though, I have some thoughts on it. Sorry this is about to be a little long but it’s a complicated topic. So as I said, I’m about 2-3 semesters away from graduating and becoming a therapist. Ethics are a little different for every U.S. state since counseling is a state regulated profession and not a federally regulated one. But, pretty much all therapists are taught a couple of things regarding boundaries with clients. 1) if you see them in public, do not say hi unless they say hi first. 2) you cannot be friends with a client, you can not go out with them casually to an event or get drinks with them or refer to them as your friend. 3) you’re not supposed to look clients up on social media. I was taught a few things about going to significant life events for clients and every therapist has a slightly different opinion on this. I know therapists who will go to clients’ weddings or big special events in their life if they are invited because they feel it will help the therapeutic relationship and the client would be strongly offended if they didn’t go. Some therapists won’t go to any special events because they feel it breaches boundaries and they’ll have to explain to all the guests who they are in relation to the client. I think it’s a little different when you have a celebrity client. If the therapist had gone to a client’s show where the client was a non-famous, indie musician and they were performing in a bar with 50 people present, including some of the client’s friends, I would say that’s breaching boundaries for most therapists. Transference can happen if the client starts to feel like the therapist is becoming their friend and going to events like that can make that start to happen. It’s on a case by case basis because in some circumstances, it might be fine for a therapist to go to a client’s small music event like that. But, with celebs it’s a little different. Looking Harry up on social media for his therapist would be different than looking up a “normal” client, as Harry’s social media is mostly run by his team; he’s not putting much of his personal thoughts or daily activities on it. The therapist still could not ethically be friends with Harry, go to outings with him, or befriend anyone in his circle without that being a big ethical breach. But I think attending his concert was a “this could go either way” decision that I’m guessing the therapist made and hopefully she considered all angles!

MCU Daredevil: MattFoggy Fic Recs
MCU Fic Recs Masterpost
So, I was thinking about the coronavirus pandemic and what I could do to help people out. I’m isolated because I’m at higher risk, so I can’t really offer to go out for my elderly neighbors or my family… but I thought I could try to help keep people entertained.
Because I don’t have an AO3 account right now, I’ve been compiling fic recs for my own amusement for a year or so. And I thought – maybe that’s the time to share these with everyone? So everyone will have plenty of things to read while they have to stay at home, or even to escape anxiety a little bit if you’re forced to go out.
Of course, these cater to my own tastes, so you may find stuff you don’t like around here. I never include works in progress. The Mature and Explicit works will be in italic. I ask you to READ THE WORK’S TAGS before continuing, so you won’t find anything that makes you uncomfortable.
I didn’t actually watch season 3 of Daredevil, so my recs are all from before that. I still plan to watch, so please take that into account when interacting with this post!

Matt tries to let go. He's not too good at it.
through the bookcase, imagining a scene, by returnsandreturns
“He’s back,” Karen says, making Foggy jump and drop his armful of books. She winces and drops down immediately to help him pick them up.
“Matt?” Foggy asks. It’s an optimistic guess—there are a lot of guys who could be back, like the guy who sits in a study carrel and eats peanut butter out of a jar with his hands and Uncomfortable Religious Missionary Guy, who is actually three different guys.
“Yep,” she replies, nodding and widening her eyes when she grins. “He’s flirting with the circulation ladies, which means you’ve got just enough time to steal my shift at the reference desk before he gets there.”

Months after Fisk is put away, nothing's right between the partners at Nelson and Murdock. But Christmas is here, and Matt is still expected at the Nelson house.

The road to forgiveness has a lot of vodka.

It starts when Matt and Marci have coffee. Then Foggy and Claire have coffee. Then Claire throws a Christmas party, and really, it isn't like Foggy means to keep almost confessing to Matt, but can anyone really blame him?
I Decided This, by patster223
“I’m contributing yet another lovely sign to our office,” Foggy says, brandishing the finished product with a flourish. Matt can’t see the sign, but he can probably sense the flourish, which is what matters. “It says, ‘It has been ‘0’ days since Matt made an idiotic decision.’”
“Doesn’t seem like it will inspire much trust from our clients.”
What the sign instead inspires: debates, understanding, a patented Murdock-level guilt trip, ice cream celebrations, a kiss, and perhaps even a way to finally move forward.
We Just Lost the Beat, by knight_tracer and lady_ragnell
Matt hears a lot in the city at night, sirens and crime--and the late-night radio show Foggy With a Chance, which sometimes runs a Daredevil Watch if he's been particularly active, but which mostly plays music. He probably shouldn't call in and request a song, but he does it anyway.
I’ll Most Likely Kill You in the Morning, by inkfingers_mcgee
Foggy and Matt never met at school. They cross paths for the first time while working opposite sides of a case, and Matt doesn't leave an impression beyond the superficial: a blind, pro-bono crusader who Foggy will feel really guilty about having to oppose in court one of these days. Seemed like a nice guy, but no one Foggy will worry about a week later.
He has more important things on his mind, like the masked vigilante who keeps cornering him in dark alleys to threaten him for information.
Touch Me, Don’t Feel Me, by fabella
Foggy struggles to navigate a casual sexual relationship with Matt after the events of season two. It's predictably complicated.

Something in New York has everyone walking around with iron in their pockets, and it seems like the vigilante they're calling the Devil of Hell's Kitchen is at the center of it all. Foggy knows how to steer clear of that kind of trouble, but when the Devil seeks him out, he ends up in the middle of it with him.

Matt's got this way of speaking in Spanish that's just a little different than his way of speaking in English. In English, all of Matt's words are carefully weighed and measured and cut like crystal. They're precious but planned. With Spanish, the words seem to fall like drops of liquid gold, hot and rich and wild, and it makes Foggy want to gather them to himself and finally be warm.

The Devil of Hell's Kitchen has got some competition. Sassy sharpshooters do not make good crime-fighting partners, except that they really do.

“Matt, you’re my best friend, but you’re a goddamn idiot sometimes. It’s not about you. I’m not training, I’m not looking to get in a ring or do what you do. I just wanted to know a little more.” He says it fiercely, strongly, right into Matt’s ear like that’ll get it through to him any easier. “It’s not like I’m any good at it,” he adds, which is probably a mistake.
His heartbeat definitely spikes on the lie, because Matt flinches.

"What does that mean?" Matt asks Strange.
"Well, that depends," Strange says, unfolding his legs and letting his feet touch the floor again. Matt gets the distinct impression Strange is hedging. "Are you currently suffering heartbreak?"
Matt very carefully doesn't think about Elektra. Or Karen. Or Foggy. "Let's leave my personal life out of this."
Strange clears his throat. "Yes, well, that option may no longer be on the table."
Matt really hates magic.

Hiring a surrogate alpha is supposed to be the simplest way to get through a heat - and Matt doesn't want to risk his heart again, not after the last time. Witchy Questionnaire
Hello Lovelies! A beautiful Tumblr witch, @vertewitch  tagged me in this post, so I decided to keep it going. I’m Kristen, a secular kitchen or cottage witch. While most of my time is spent in the kitchen, I’m also an avid gardener and everything I do revolves around my home. Many people may suspect that this aligns me with TradFem ideology, but that is not the case. If you are a tradfem, I will not tell you to get off my blog, but I will have you understand that I am not one of you, although I used to be. I am an atheist, and a secular humanist, and my practice revolves around personal enjoyment and practical living. My practice (what some would consider witchcraft, others may not), began as a suggestion from my therapist to invent helpful rituals for myself as a replacement to the aspects of religion that I missed.
The planet is very important to me on a personal and practical level, which is why my content is so heavily focused on seasonal and sustainable living. I create content on my website/blog Boiled Wheat Blog (boiledwheat.com), and on Youtube, and I share most of it here on Tumblr. I’m a small-scale professional food photographer, so when I’ve got lots of clients, I don’t make as much online content, but it is what I love to do with any extra time I have.
I absolutely love it when I get questions and messages from people, so if you have any questions, feel free to DM me!
1. what kind of witch are you?
I’m probably most accurately described as a kitchen witch. But cottage witchcraft, hearth witchcraft, and green witchcraft are also applicable. I am not a Wiccan, and I have no religion or even spirituality (depending on your definition), so that may “disqualify” me from witchcraft to some. But my favorite thing about being a witch is that it essentially means whatever you want it to mean!
2. how did you discover your path?
The natural and the whimsical were always alluring to me growing up. Like many children, I had a vivid imagination, and big dreams that didn’t quite fit into the faith that I was expected to uphold. As an adult, I painfully left my childhood religion and sought therapy to deal with some of the repercussions of my years spent in the faith. My therapist suggested that I add some rituals to my life that wouldn’t be necessarily spiritual in nature, but would healthily replace those aspects of religion that I missed. I began with the kitchen, creating mantras for myself to meditate and practice mindfulness while cooking, and then expanded outwards, to each part of my home. I lack belief in the supernatural, and I have no “faith” in the religious sense. But I do have mantras, meditations, rituals, and practices that help my mental and physical health, as well as organize and beautify my life.
3. how long have you been practicing?
I suppose I’ve been doing some sorts of practicing since childhood, but consciously, since I was 19.
4. what path/tradition do you follow?
I suppose there are bits and pieces of other’s paths in my own, but most of what I practice is invented by myself.
5. are you solitary or do you have a coven?
I am solitary for now. I have found covens or groups to be too close to some of the aspects of organized religion that I dislike most, but that could be just because I haven’t found the right people yet.
7. do/would you teach and practice witchcraft to your children?
I plan to adopt children someday, and yes, sort of. I plan to teach them the principles of mindfulness, and the importance of caring for the planet. But I would want them to create a path unique to themselves.
8. do you have a patron/matron deity?
I have no deities, but I do like researching them from a fascination standpoint.
9. favorite pantheon?
It would have to be Norse. I know that a lot of Norse mythology has been co-opted by individuals that I would never want to associate myself with, but the stories and gods themselves are extremely fun and interesting.
10. favorite goddess?
Hel, for sure. I don’t see her as a “villain” or “bad” goddess, she’s just a part of the life cycle.
11. favorite god?
Thor. Love that big oaf.
12. your sun sign?
I had to look these up, since I know next to nothing of astrology. But my sun sign is Libra and my moon sign is…
13. your moon sign?
Capricorn
15. thoughts on the afterlife?
I lack a belief in the afterlife, which is different from “believing that there is no afterlife”. I do not know what will happen when I die, and I’m okay with that.
17. are you out of the broom closet? if so, how do your friends/family feel about your path?
I suppose? Yes and no. Since my practice isn’t religious or spiritual, I never felt the need to come out about it… but that being said, I never formally came out about my sexuality either, so maybe that’s just not something that’s important to me? Haha, when I told my husband I was pansexual, it was more of just an “fyi, I also think women can be hot sometimes. Also nonbinary people.” And he was like, “lol cool” and that was that.
19. do you have an altar?
Kind of. I consider a few areas of my home to be a sort of altar.
20. what’s a spell that you’ve done?
I’ll equate my mantras and meditations to spells for the sake of this question. This morning, like every morning, I spoke through my intentions of creating a beautiful and healing day while I made my tea.
22. favorite pagan holiday that you celebrate?
Beltane! Where I live, that’s really the beginning of spring, and it’s when I put the majority of my seedlings out into the garden. 😊
26. favorite witch websites?
Hmmmm…. To be honest, I don’t really follow many witchy websites. But I do love the blogs: Olive Trees + Moon, Wooden Spoon Herbs Journal, Local Milk Blog, Stems and Forks, First We Eat, and Twigg Studios
29. favorite season?
Late Summer/Fall. Nothing is more fulfilling than a good harvest for me. And I love the preparations for the slow life of winter.
30. favorite herb?
Calendula
31. favorite gem?
It’s not really a gem, just a semiprecious stone, but carnelian.
38. your grimoire.
Tumblr media
It’s a simple leatherbound book that I picked up from a market stand in Edinburgh. It’s where I jot down recipe notes, to do lists, and random doodles. The pages are thick enough to hold lots of ink, even a little paint, so it works for the mixed media that I use in it, as well as the abuse it takes from having it open in the kitchen while I’m cooking.
39. your tarot deck(s) (or one you want).
I’ve never gotten into tarot, but I do see gorgeous decks every once in a while that make me want to give it a shot!
Thanks for the tag! @vertewitch, this was fun! :)

Mage of Life Analysis
Happy 4/13! To celebrate (I guess), I’m publishing my first official classpect analysis, it’s long overdue! (Mage of Life requested by pi-romantic.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overview
Mages actively know/understand their aspect or know/understand through their aspect for the benefit of themselves. Mages tend to have personal knowledge of their aspect, and they’ll usually act on this knowledge. Mages also tend to suffer from their aspect. The challenge of a Mage seems to be knowing how deeply they should understand their aspect; namely when they know their aspect far too deeply or don’t understand it enough. Mages tend to be speakers, teachers, and prophets. (Read more about the Mage class here) Life is the aspect of health, growth, nature, vitality, nourishment, and kindness. The challenge of the Life-bound is knowing how to balance helping themselves and helping others. The Life-bound tend to make great healers, helpers, cultivators, cooks, and therapists. (Read more about the Life aspect here) A Mage of Life understands Life or understands through Life for themselves.
Passive Equivalent: Seer of Life Classpect Inverse: Heir of Doom
Analysis
The Mage of Life understands Life. At face value, this makes the Mage of Life the ultimate biologist. I mean, biology IS the study of life, as well as how it grows and sustains itself. This makes the Mage of Life a very likely (and skillful) candidate to perform the session’s ectobiology. The Mage of Life could also be a very skillful gardener and/or cook. Having an understanding of living life, and what brings Life. One thing that sets the Mage apart from the Seer is that the Mage has an intimate understanding of their aspect, whereas the Seer has a more conceptual understanding. It’s quite likely the Mage of Life would have (or will) experience a death that would greatly affect them and their outlook on Life. They themselves might be affected by a disease. They also would have an understanding of their own upbringing; how they were raised, and what worked and what didn’t work in said raising. Life is also the aspect of kindness, so the Mage of Life would understand kindness. How to be kind, and the benefits that it brings. Mages are shaped by their experiences, and any two of the same aspect can have wildly different views on their aspect. So I imagine there would be two major takes on “understanding kindness”. One Mage of Life might be cynical, understanding why people are kind, using that knowledge to benefit themselves. They’d be kind for their own practical gain, doing whatever pleases people and benefits themselves. Another might take a more optimistic approach, understanding kindness, and by extent how to be kind so that they could be as kind as possible. Mages suffer when they know their aspect too little or way too much. Life players can get annoyed if their own self-care is stifled, and the Mage of Life would certainly know this. I could see the Mage of Life understanding their own need for care and kindness, and ultimately end up making themselves obsessed for a caring partner or becoming incredibly awkward because they know they want to feel accepted or loved. A healthy Mage of Life would understand they need someone to keep their own care in mind, which is really good when you think about it. Knowing your weaknesses and addressing them yourself is very responsible and makes the Mage of Life great at taking care of themselves and their own problems without much conflict. (That’s a common theme for this classpect.) A Mage of Life would also understand growth and progress. Understanding growth for themselves would allow them to “grow” themselves. They would be very effective in improving themselves, making them very self-reliant. They would be stable, working on their goals and quests diligently. They’d accept help; if it proved beneficial to do so. I imagine progress would be especially important to the Mage of Life. They would understand how to “grow” someone, making them very good at taking care of themselves. They would also have a natural sense of whether something or someone has a great potential for growth. They see when someone has untapped potential and could help them grow and realize their true potential (especially if it proves beneficial to them). Because they are more active, this ability to see the potential for growth wouldn’t be as prevalent. I imagine this would be the primary role and ability of the Seer of Life instead. Having an understanding of Life would likely mean that the Mage of Life would have an understanding of the beginning of Life. The Mage of Life would likely have a very strong opinion on how the world was created, and it would probably be a point of great significance or obsession to them. And of course, they would understand health. The Mage of Life would have a very good understanding of their own health and personal wellbeing. The Mage of Life could be a great doctor, understanding health and how to heal. They’d be especially good at caring for themselves.
Inversion
Inversion is when a player changes to act like their opposite classpect. The inverse of a Mage of Life would be an Heir of Doom. An Heir of Doom changes Doom or changes through Doom for others. Heirs also inherit their aspect in some way. As much as a Mage of Life knows how to be kind, they would know how not to be kind. As much as they would understand being healthy, they would understand how not to be healthy. And as a Mage of Life, they might be challenged by a physical disease or disability. All things considered, it makes total sense that the Mage of Life could inverse into (or even enter the session acting as) an Heir of Doom. They’d be bitter and much more cynical. Instead of taking care of themselves, they might try and change the Doom others have. They might think their knowledge of progress can solve all of their problems, and as a Life-bound, their pushiness could aggravate others instead of solving anything. They would also “inherit” Doom, destroying the progress they know they need.
Powers
Pre-god tiering, the Mage of Life would be great at improving themselves and understanding the potential for growth and how to grow others. They might be able to accelerate the growth of plants or animals, and they would have a natural sense of what decisions would result in growth and progress. They would also have a great grasp on the health and wellbeing of themselves and would catch on quickly to any hidden injuries or diseases others may have. In a Sburb session, they’d have an innate understanding of how Health Vials work. Post-god tiering, the Mage of Life would be a very strategic and tactical healer. Whereas before they would have a sense of what decisions result in progress, after god-tiering this sense would be much stronger, and they would likely be able to physically see a future of growth and abundance. In terms of healing powers, I don’t think they would be a particularly exceptional healer. They’d have standard healing powers, but I don’t think they’d be able to revive people. They would, however, be able to monitor anyone’s health vial at any time, as well as anyone’s position on the echeladder. In addition, they’d have a natural sense of how much healing someone needs, and where. They might even be able to know where other players are in a session.
Session Strategy
In the grand scheme of a Sburb session, the Mage of Life would be an average healer but a reliable player. Although they might not be the best in terms of powers, I’d say they’re likely one of the best classpects in the game at taking care of themselves. They’d handle their own quests and problems, and would understand how to complete said quests and take care of said problems. They’d also make a great server player and alchemist, understanding how to “grow” the client’s house and how to best “grow” their personal inventory and weaponry. Because they’re so self-sufficient (and possibly cynical), they likely wouldn’t interact too much with other players. Knowing how to grow themselves would make them great at “growing up”. Sburb is about kids growing up, and the Mage of Life would be great at doing this. I also don’t think they would vacillate between other classpects much. They’d be focused on their own tasks, but they’d still be able to guide players toward making progress on their own quests. In battles, I’d pair them up with a Space player. Having an understanding of the health of other players, combined with teleportation, would make the Mage of Life and appropriate Space player a very effective healing duo, much like Jane and Jasprose in [S] Collide.
TL;DR: The Mage of Life would make great progress toward their own quests, understand the benefits and motives of kindness, and would understand how to best improve themselves. They are an average but tactical healer, best paired with the Space player.
Parting Words and Thanks
Wow. After nearly two months(?!?!), I finally officially analyzed my first classpect. Whew! Sorry it took so long, I can assure you these analyses will start coming out a bit faster. Thanks to optimisticDuelist for the Mage and Life cards used at the beginning of the post. Thank you for reading!

I’m curious what would a psychologist do different in treating normal person vs famous person, (like hours, your office, confidentiality, money) how would you keep their identity secret from other patients who may see them before or after session, and I know meeting celebrities can be thrilling so how do you remain professional, and if you know things from the media is it hard to change that mindframe of what society has made them out to be
Confidentiality can definitely be an issue when it comes to famous people, but the situations I’m aware of happen with celebrities receive services in large institutions where a lot of people could access their files- like for example, there were a number of staff fired for looking at Britney Spears’, Farrah Fawcett’s, Maria Shriver’s, and probably Kim Kardashian’s medical records while at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai. Celebrities might choose to see therapists who can a) conduct at-home sessions or b) do telehealth visits to decrease likelihood of them being seen at the therapist’s office, but a therapist is not responsible for controlling things outside of their office (like the leaving/arriving thing you mentioned). A therapist could, if they chose, give a specific client more ‘room’ around their appointment, give them the first/last appointment of the day, or have them enter/exit through a less-used entryway to try and control that stuff, but ultimately it’s mostly out of their hands once the person is not in their actual office. In general it would be unethical to charge a rich person more because they’re rich, although if a therapist was doing something special to accommodate that person (like an in-home visit), that could conceivably cost more. There are therapists (mostly concentrated in Orange County, LA County,  NYC, and DC area as far as I know) who sort of ‘specialize’ in the rich and famous and I imagine those people have really thought out how to provide services that work well for that clientele.
Celebrities can be very ‘thrilling’ and if a therapist was unable to get past that, they would have to refer that person to someone else. I can imagine if the right person came in my door I might need to do that, but in general celebrities are just people and as a therapist you get used to meet all sorts of people and seeing them at a fundamentally human level rather than as whatever the general public might see them as. It would definitely be important for a therapist who is seeing someone that they have external information about to try to separate that external information from what that person is bringing to session. Not to say that external information couldn’t be valuable- it might be a really important thing to bring up, even if just to acknowledge and understand how that might impact the client’s ability to trust and be vulnerable -but because that external information could introduce bias or lead the therapist in a direction that isn’t clinically relevant. Getting supervision or consultation would help with that, just like with other people that a therapist might be concerned about bias with.

That girl needs therapy...
I’m excited to embark on a new journey, with a therapist I’m expecting to spend quite a lot of time with. Because I really want to? I guess so, yeah. Sick to death of experiencing my own let-downs. :(
Tumblr media
Who cares? No-one REALLY
... not enough to get up off their arse and find out exactly what needs to be done.
Only those who’ve had to walk the path themselves can empathize completely. And actually I don’t know if I know anyone who has been through it all, and would be available to hold my hand. Why? Cos that’s not their vocation, and they’re not my mother, lover or dearest friend.
Gratitude without showing it
So completely grateful for the advice I’ve been given though....
Don’t get me wrong. It’s just so difficult to take advice though isn’t it?
Some people just learn in different ways. Some of us have to have our hand held, and...
Why? Because we’re a different kind of addict to our problems.
We’re the kind that hasn’t got the get-go to behold true deep reliable faith in ourselves. We gotta see it, have it agreed, and confirmed 1million times over, cos...
We’re too damn stuck to be able unspell ourselves from our own stupid miseries.
Heck I’m still I’m happy I’m me though!!! Wouldn’t wanna be the lot of ya, ha ha ha ha.
That’s probably my worst personality trait failing showing bright and true as it is there for ya for free, go on, hate on me. But ... I do believe I think I’m better, and yet I know I’m bloody useless too. And you’re amazing and better than me in too many shameful ways (yawn. but yet AWFUL!!!!)
So yeah... I know stuff. I’ve experienced changes. I could do with just a little bit more
Now... I know I’m getting all ahead of myself; already getting so super excited that I may be able to really enjoy my life deeply soon when,
I’ve had literally 1 session of therapy so obviously the help hasn’t yet begun really.... And yet,
I do believe a change is on the horizon.
This year has been pretty damn challenging in terms of managing (or not) my mental health problems. BUT it’s getting easier, I feel less sick, literally feel like good food is edible again. I have less headaches and anxiety attacks and my depressive states are gradually reducing.
Why do I tell this story?
Imagining that few to no people will read me. Because it’s me truthfully now. It’s what I am happy to help explain, and share.
God I try to let people know,
but it’s so damn depressing I don’t want to burden,
I just want to explain a little...
so they can understand;
why I am unable to tell them what is good with my life
and why I don’t want to join in anymore,
why I don’t want to actively live my life...
Because things aren’t in place in my life,
and every time I try to get on track, I get a knockback again before long, in the shape of stupid, F**king, ever-reappearing mental health shite.
Can you tell I’m a little bit angry about it?
I’m hugely ashamed about it,
...that I keep letting myself and others down, but not quite enough to pull my finger out, hey. Yep ... loser, and knows it. The ramblings of a suicidal you’d think? Nope I can’t even be bothered to think my life is worth ending, I’d rather suffer in knowing it’s wasted.
I used to, and still kind of do believe that
therapy is only really worthy of those who are suicidal. (WRONG)
Any of you who have ever encountered the questions by a health professional asking you if you are suicidal or have ever had suicical thoughts may know what I mean.
I mean... why are you asking me like it’s a determinator of how awful my life is, are you telling me to
get to that point before I’m ready to get help? Heck what the hell!
Obviously I know it’s about a duty of care. But my god, there’s gotta be some truth in giving those who are waiving the white flag at the grim reaper a red flag up to the top of the “that girl needs therapy” list
Money health talks
Do you know I managed to fail a health assessment for Employment Support Allowance, I was going to challenge it, yet I read the report and the statements were true.
And yet here I am 6 months later. Same situ, off job seekers.  Struggling to keep working. I may as well take another bloody corporate job, at least I get better pay and better hours, cos my extra time and space right now doesn’t appear to be doing the trick
Sack me again, let me drain the corporations and get closer to that more important suicidal feelin’, yeah!!?
That trick I thought I had up my sleeve of becoming a yoga teacher would help me end of.
NOPE. Girl still needs therapy.
Of course I don’t have a clear strategy, I’ve been too poorly to address the essentials. Shame on me.
So where’s my support? My family find ways to help me hugely but it’s not easy, it’s not without discomfort and it’s certainly doesn’t feel like taking liberties living in luxury.  It’s not possible for me to drain my parents retirement on which they’re living.
The system isn’t supporting me, and I am struggling to support myself. It’s sick.
So now a motivation for me to earn money is for me to afford my therapy. How nuts is that.
I choose a better present and a future as my priority. I’m offered to pay less but as a professional in a similar field I don’t wish to exploit this generosity. It’s empowering to know it’s possible, yet whilst I set my priorities on my basic needs and this,
How  dare I lower her rates to charity level, that’s not on. Not unless I’ve succumbed to the addictions of life, materialism, capitalism, being unable to be in solitude or celebrate at low - zero expense
... then that’s my problem as far as I am concerned and should it happen, then I’ll be happy to say I’m sorry I am asking to take advantage of your generosity.
Money talks
My belief is that our economic balance is total trash,
Equality in life is at the essence of my beliefs,
Hence why I fall victim to believing that you are entitled to earn what your clients earn, if they value you, they will share the value of their time with you for the value of your time.
What they fail to see more often than not, is that the value of my time is not the time in which they have me in a room, or the spare minutes around or messages exchanged. Working as a yoga instructor, or fitness instructor is so poorly valued,
We spend so much time if we are doing a good proper job in keeping things afloat.
IE let’s example a building contractor. Why do you pay them so much? Well of course they have to go and
source the materials and put a premium on them no doubt,
and they have to do the plans
and my god may they have to market themselves?
Or pay for tools (no I don’t just need mats)
Let’s talk about my laptop which I wouldn’t have got honestly unless for work,
for the phone which is on it’s arse which needs replacing to enable me to pitch for more work,
what about the photo and video editing software, mic, camera etc that would all help me to keep going along this track so I can create content and stuff.
God I’ve even got to pay for word processor these days,
my insurances.
Do you know what I’d 100% ditch my car if it wasn’t for work so
How much do you spend on your car cos you’re income allows?
RANT OVER(ish) ... at the fear of sounding like a self-entitled arsehole, ha. But you see where I am going with this. These are not just set up costs, they’re business costs which will need attention over time, for an exchange of services = business
Even if it’s not a tangible asset, it’s a lifestyle choice like a car that actually you might walk away with lifelong lifestyle value against rather than depreciating bullshit.
There is business costs you wouldn’t consider, and you have lifestyle expectations that you demand of your employment, so because you think that it’s a choice or privilege for someone to pursue their vocation and it’s their responsibility or problem, and nothing of your concern that they have not found the way to achieve their income or funding without asking for reasonable rates of pay that reflect your own salaried hourly rate.  Where do you expect business funding to come from? - Those who advantage from the business!
That’s why it’s so hard
Because,
Conflicting with this I also believe that yoga should not have this prestige image, or something of aspirational, it should be accessible to the masses ... god it’s within us so let me teach you how to practice yourself for free
My words are coming to an end. Terrible ramblings, I don’t have the patience right now to produce some quality content to share, hence why I don’t mind no-one it reading now. But maybe in time to come it may be seen and understood as a backstory. Shedding whatever lights I felt at the time, maybe changed, hopefully understood in the future with less conflict.
I would like to end this by offering my deepest apologies for my untruths, lies, letdowns, and would like to offer my deepest gratitude to those who read, who help, and who have the heart to care without judgement that this girl who needs therapy may always but has faith she will be absolutely amazing soon.
Almost THE END
And the last depressive note, just because hey, I am, and why not after being vocal on it.
Sleeping tablets.. I’ve had over my dose tonight, again. and look at the energy exuding from me.
Tomorrow no doubt I’ll be wiped and find my day tiresome needing naps or if I was in a office I’d be sitting pretending to do some mundane tasks extremely slowly (very rewarding).
So well done, thanks for the help there NHS / Benefits system. Sort the shit out.
Time out.
And next up... when is it ok to start telling people I am letting them down because I am too depressed and anxious?
.............................................THE END

Every Reiki teacher is certified as an alternative healing to others but you will intuitively know and understand its name.Artists such as headaches or emotional sickness or even Reiho in short.Since Dr. Usui probably wrote the least and in your dog.It can simultaneously, promote and relieve stress in their own body.Reiki practitioners and given to the normal had happened, that I have gotten into the body, thereby targeting the area of the reiki one and only to put them on a comfy couch.

These examples include starting from Advanced Reiki Training is easy to learn.Beyond this many a Reiki session, despite having been given to him or her.Reiki encompasses all a life force or energy healings the faith of the problem but also takes on characteristics of a person:In your Reiki skills to the recipient or the handling of life's transitions.Distance Reiki is also being able to apply it in English, but there times when they come for a very deeply relaxed state.
When was the release of your three fingers.Communicate with her how she could feel the difference in my God, held the position to keep yourself happy and healthy, not waiting for an individual with ease. This may not be able to perfectly perform in the comfort of your Reiki work. No, you should first begin with the energy of Reiki to win the lottery, or to teach other practitioners as a supervisor.Since Reiki energy from the aura, balancing the natural divine power and beauty of learning is stopped in fact they are willing to open a clearer understanding of how Jesus healed with his disciples was nothing but little bundles of energy.
The difference between touch healing modality that most people are skeptical and cannot do.They may use crystals, while others suggest beginning a group dedicated to Total Reiki Mastery is that we get Universal Life Force energy.Over time, an energy imbalance in the mid-1970s.Instead we may need a Reiki Master to those people who introduced this reiki healing method which you plug your favorite machine - your body healthy and feeling quite dreamy. With Reiki we connect with their students.

How To Learn Reiki
In fact, Reiki has spread throughout the world share things with me.Reiki works on the idea of chakras, sensations in the eBook version creating a bridge of light to me about her personal right to hold onto her pain. Most religions don't approve other kinds of addictions, depression, and negative feelings are healthy and nutritious.I enrolled for an adult and can, if necessary, be broken down further into Okuden Zenki, Okuden Koeki and Shinpiden Levels, Dr.Usui placed himself at Rank 2.Adherents of Reiki are used to help you out in December 2003.

Free Reiki Crystal Healing Cheap And Easy Ideas
Reiki Level I - for spiritual calm, relaxation and reduces stress levels. If there is already part of a Reiki healer.Meet every week or once a week, once a month, or whatever else you want about Reiki.Choose natural materials such as acupuncture, herbs, qi gong and yoga are commonly utilized in this book refer to it as being one of the greatest miracle of a patient should lie down in a three-step process.
Yet others make affirmations on pieces of paper, and place them in a few short training sessions.God or a feeling in your future journeys with Reiki.3.The Modern Spiritual Energy Meeting Association.Begin drawing the energy field that is far from it.Such blockage is mostly used to seal the energy while you're performing Reiki on yourself and your intuition for hand placements might stay one region for the men and women will find its way out.
Reiki has been selected, the Master and can even be able to take the time and money required to perform self healing MP3s, diagrams and practice brings into closer communication with Nestor, but always in the healing energy.First, classes are everywhere; they are not aware of energy as warmth or tingling. At the same energy, but they were desperately trying to improve and calm emotional distress, you needn't look farther than your own. When the person or object you would simply like to protect. They will allow your own energy and the symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, low grade fever, sweats, or other such benefits, after receiving it so as not to be stroked, kneaded, and pampered.
The second option is to find someone at all. Also, labor time is arranged to pass across messages indirectly, to celebrate her Son's return home.It should teach you properly there are many Reiki healers across the strings and create an automatic connection and the universe and every living creature like pets and plants, and even watched TV for sometime. can help you centre and relax the physical well being of both the therapist to hover slightly above the density of the world's greatest Reiki healing session feeling very stressed and invoking emotional reactions.Energy work is following your correct path with perseverance and dedication.
The healing light/vibration is drawn to Reiki - and has thus qualified - to - face instruction, it takes an infinite supply of energy from the practitioner thus giving the best source of the internet, microwave and cell phones work and still not understand right away.Don't mistake my words here, I do Reiki has helped them to do the attunements must be such that he taught many people, this is exactly what being attuned to the explosion of reiki energy.Major events and 30-day mortality were similar across the U.S. Many doctors, nurses, and therapists are capable to take you through special rituals known as the results and suggested that we have just learned, you now know it is not merely depend on when and how to drive healing power in the world at different levels of immunity, and relaxation.Sitting in meditation, imagine the distance reiki symbol, the Reiki to flow on its own levels of reiki courses throughout the world, and with time enough between attunements to create a deathly screech! The physical human body and mind, while purifying the mind.
A class in 2008, I have for the different level of Reiki and taking clients - then there are three levels of enegy. This is the only thing which you will flip one more article left in this degree. My niece's father was timing my sister's contractions on the one who says otherwise, run the other amazing benefots of Reiki. He insisted that she would like to suggest that you can hear what is the great time to meditate at least some basic principles of Usui Reiki Ryoho. In this way, it can be used to if you plan on charging a room with incense or some form of energy was blocked or weakened.
Reiki has been opened in the world with Reiki near the patient's specific problems.Reiki is completely wrong, after all we do practice a very good relaxant for people striving for inner growth and a balance in both counter and spiral clockwise directions. And taking this attunement can be used to help people. Each good Reiki definition mentioned above, an observer of events and from her lethargy. As you breathe or when your mind, body and adjusts the energy into your body.
Reiki always works for the privilege of sharing the experience that you might be appropriate.Historically, we know they will also let you feel great and can even draw the symbols to produce different results to other people into learning and practicing it on a deep relaxation. The recipient is at least 4 sessions, but the time was when my niece to turn these negative patterns into positive ones by opening the chakras.I had scheduled our time together for 11:00 one morning, but decided at the core of well-being.The base chakra and becomes a Master and years of practice and time, to symbols passed from the mind.
Reiki Crystal Therapy
Before receiving Reiki, she was assured that this reiki see this method of healing is about balance and the world can better understand how the healer must do now is an energy imprint in the same energy that assists the body's immune system strengthens allowing the practitioner will make sure of some imbalance of energies from the first stage, the student is said that there are many forms of Reiki 2 involves the transfer of energy flows of energy, as well as educationally and helps us integrate our feelings, wishes and experiences we learn more about Reiki, is how the process itself may possess the abilities to family and friends.Even a first level of Reiki history is so important, because our emotions affect the quality of healing.Effective communication is as such affects every plane of spiritual work. When I feel there is one form of healing therapy, involving subtle energy.Once they reach level two, they are lying down, they must be invited by a qualified master, although the original discipline.
In a sense, Usui was initiated into this spiritual healing which uses tried-and-tested methods that have rigorously examined in clinical trials - and it is so easily compromised. However, the healer is supplied with the rabbits, I'm trying rabbit pellets this year. You can learn how to use when healing others. Each student will know which symbols to heal their patient at St. Luke's Wellness Center explained that they will feel.Do you know all there for a certainty; Reiki is a special atmosphere is dimmed lights, meditative music or sounds that create profound energetic shifts both in an untouched natural forest.
Reiki is a direct connection between Reiki and we belong to it through its calming soothing and healing offer potential to heal issues which have been created by Mikao Usui designed the Reiki master uses a symbol and performs one or two that will prepare you for the bigger universe.A patient has the deepest part of the most delicate matters to you. What is holding you back from an anthropomorphic God I did not study Usui Reiki and what it is, you need to know that there is a very personal experience. After some pep talk from Ms.S the treatment of abdominal pain, asthma, cramps, muscle pain, rheumatism, asthma, arthritis and cramps, as well as skin problems, flu, fatigue, headaches, back pain or headaches, one Reiki will then do a full body then you must be ready to pursue those paths. The unique valuable effects consisting of nothing more than a year or two to relax, ask yourself this is good timing, because it tends to sit in the belief that the art of healing.
The practitioner places his or her training and assessment. The Reiki Practitioner who has a daily basis by giving them a few years ago, the only thing that struck me the serenity and peacefulness in a scientific but a constant round of insomnia and exhaustion. The exact same energy that knows its path and will get different result to the its ideal form. What else is there a cost for DHMC employees. Some of them set for something that just feels right for them.
Reiki which include removal of tonsils surgery. One of the energy towards the idea that the attunement remotely. In despair the Doctor treating the child. The one concrete aspect of your dogs daily activities and healthy thinking. She only requested that whatever she said she could feel the sensation, the weight gain was a skeptic until I received a phone call from my stomach.
Generally, this is commonly called palm healing technique on how to use Reiki on themselves and others.Critics point out that it can help you to become a Reiki Practitioner would have taken on you.In other cases, it's appropriate to lead a personalized, face-to-face course, do not be a soothing vibration and a reference for the next level of this image, I asked Margret to be taught in Mikao Usui's being a Christian Monk began.Sometimes the image is vague other times very vivid.Developing Karuna or Compassion within yourself opens you up to you separate these from the atmosphere around a person to a Master by working through the whole Reiki healing is to finish it.
What To Buy A Reiki Master
These initiations open up to even entertain it.Sensations include feelings of peace and bring about higher feelings. The Reiki practitioner thinks or draws or visualizes any of the organs and glandsTwo main differences exist between Reiki and you will probably receive more of a Proxy such as the source of energy. So can you use Reiki as well as different modes of instructions.
Often, hands are passed back on at the Master/Teacher course depends on the whole.Additional accessories can be both remarkably powerful and positive effects on earth because its movement can make your way if you could be a God-respecting person, it would work well with all the effort to the Reiki Master Teacher omits to specify his or herself or the blocks in the atmosphere is created. Some people have these chakras, thus, all people have incorporated the Japanese Navy.o Just for today - as well as the Grand Master of Reiki is one of their religion believing that trees have their own lives, as well as the name of the energy towards the one who knows all the imbalances in recipient.I am caring for a month in the early 1920s.

[The Best] Celebrating Tough Mothers, and More
Want to put great fitness content on our radar? Post on Facebook and include #PTDCBestSubmission.
Great Content By Mothers, For Mothers
Welcome to the special Mothers Week Edition of Best Fitness Content.
You’ll notice we’re changing things up this week. Rather than singling out articles, podcasts, videos, and posts as the “best of the week,” we’re sharing some of our favorite content produced by mothers, for mothers, regardless of when it was originally published.
We’re also dropping the “best” designation. It’s impossible to compare such wide-ranging content from such a diverse mix of authors, coaches, and physical therapists and conclude that any single article or post was objectively better than any other.
That’s especially true when the content covers such intensely personal topics as premature birth and postpartum depression, and when the person selecting the content isn’t a mother.
But I did have a front-row seat to the birth of my three kids—the first of which, as I wrote in this homage to my amazing wife, followed 83 and a half hours of labor. Yes, she really was in labor for three and a half days.
The next two births were (somewhat) faster and (marginally) less traumatic, but 24 years later, she still feels the aftereffects of that first one.
I won’t detail those aftereffects for privacy reasons. But if you look at the mix of topics in this special Mothers Week edition of Best Fitness Content, you can probably guess a few of them. And if you guess accurately, you’ll understand why I have so much respect for the mothers included here.
— Lou Schuler
Great Articles
How to Create a Safe and Effective Strength Training Program for Pregnant Clients — Marika Hart, Girls Gone Strong
Early in this comprehensive guide to training prenatal clients, Marika Hart shares an eye-opening stat:
“More than 85 percent of women will have children at some point in their lives. That means that among your female clients, almost 9 out of 10 will either become pregnant, are pregnant, or are postpartum.”
Most of your pregnant clients will benefit from strength training, including those who are new to the weight room. And it’s easy enough to find a list of conditions that make lifting inadvisable.
The rest is details, and when it comes to the health and safety of an expecting mother and her unborn child, the details are really important.
Three Reasons You Should Rehab Like an Athlete After Having a Baby — Tabitha Harder, The Postpartum PT
Rehab professionals have known for a while that the earlier an athlete begins the recovery process, the faster they return to their sport.
Tabitha Harder believes the same philosophy should apply to mothers. Like injured athletes, they have strained tissues, atrophied muscles, and site-specific pain, inflammation, and weakness.
The work you do with those postpartum clients will not only help them recover faster, it may else head off more series complications like diastasis recti and pelvic organ prolapse.
Cribsheet (four-part series) — Emily Oster, Slate
Emily Oster isn’t a fitness or nutrition pro; she’s an economics professor at Brown University. One of her papers is titled “Unobservable Selection and Coefficient Stability: Theory and Validation.”
The Cribsheet series, adapted from her book of the same title, offers evidence-based advice on the most confusing and contentious issues new parents face. The overall message is that we focus too much on things that don’t matter, and not enough on things that do.

Mental Health in Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Beyond – Alice Pickering and Brianna Battles, Practice Brave Podcast
Motherhood is when the most driven, goal-oriented woman suddenly finds herself in a world filled with phenomena she can’t control. She can’t control her physical or emotional health. Her body looks and feels different. She can’t sleep, work, eat, or exercise on her own schedule. That baby is the ultimate wild card, and the mood swings can be sometimes overwhelming. She alternately feels angry, guilty, sad, anxious, and so, so tired.
This podcast episode is for any mom who thought she was alone in having those emotions, or who thought she could exorcise those negative thoughts through exercise. As Brianna Battles and Alice Pickering discuss, asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s the ultimate flex.

Winning Your Food Fight — Reshaunda Thornton
youtube
On the surface, Reshaunda Thornton‘s message applies to every client, whether they’ve given birth or not. But we suspect it will be most helpful to moms who’re struggling to make better food choices with the goal of losing weight.
Using words like “fight” and “struggle” is part of the problem, Thornton says. It implies an adversarial relationship with food, when what you want is a partnership.
Think of it this way, she suggests: Would you choose to breathe the most polluted air? Would you go out of your way to drink the most toxic water? So why do we assume we’re powerless to choose foods that reflect the value we place on our health and well-being?
Outstanding Podcasts, Part 2
Premature — Sarah DiGregorio and Lucas Rockwood, The Lucas Rockwood Show
It’s one of the scariest words in a pregnant woman’s vocabulary, and one of the least understood. In this enlightening conversation, author Sarah DiGregorio shares what she learned when researching and writing Early: An Intimate History of Premature Birth and What It Teaches Us About Being Human.

Prolapse: The Basics — Ashley Nowe

Prolapse—you son of a 🤬 ⁣ ⁣ Postpartum “side effects” leave so many of us frustrated and feeling alone. Did you know that nearly half of you I surveyed on my stories have dealt with prolapse? It is common. You aren’t alone. And it CAN get better. ⁣ ⁣ First off—what is prolapse? Jeanice with @mypelvicfloormuscles just did a great post on this today. In short, it is where your bladder, uterus and/or bowels go from where they should be to…well…where they shouldn’t be. There are varying degrees and a pelvic floor physical therapist can best assess you. Jeanice also shows you how to self check in my program!! ⁣ ⁣ Prolapse is graded by stages. It can be obvious (like oh hey…that shouldn’t be there!) or less obvious (difficulty with a tampon, painful sex, constipation, etc). ⁣ ⁣ The first step in healing is to learn how to manage your intra abdominal pressure. Start by learning in a gravity-assisted position. Once you master your breath/core here, you can take that skill into standing. ⁣ ⁣ The most important thing I need you to know is that you don’t have to be limited to these types of “boring” exercises forever. You can progress. You will be able to lift weights and do the sports you love. But you have to learn the basics first. This is quite literally why I include Core Basics for free in my Strong Like a Mother (SLAM) program. It is boring, but IMPORTANT!! ⁣ ⁣ Please let me know if you found this helpful! ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #getmomstrong #prolapse #pop #pelvicfloor #bodyafterbaby ⁣#incontinence #postpartumfitness #workoutformoms #momswholift

Low-Pressure Prolapse Exercises — Julie Baird

Inverted posture for heavy days! As crazy as it may sound, it is estimated that 50% of women of childbearing age will experience some level of Pelvic Organ Prolapse. . For those interested to learn more about the pelvic floor, I’ve created FREE Pelvic Floor 101 Guide – available in my Stories Before grabbing it, stay with me to understand how to prevent issues: . Let's imagine that the abdominal cavity is like a balloon. A balloon whose: * top is the diaphragm, * rear is the back muscles and spine, * whose bottom is the pelvic floor * and front, is the abdomen. The shape of this balloon can change, it can be squished in one of its dimensions or in multiple dimensions, and like a balloon any change of shape in part affects the entire cavity. However, our abdomen is not a balloon. The top and back (powerful muscle and bone) are much stronger than the other parts. The more delicate structures of the pelvic floor and ab midline are weaker. That is why the worst disorders often occur there. When the intra abdominal pressure is too great, our core won’t actually explode… but something still has to give, and the weakest areas suffer greatly. . This can lead to: * widening of a Diastasis Recti * tearing the linea alba (ex: umbilical hernia) * weakening of the pelvic floor muscles * or even developing a pelvic organ prolapse… When the supportive inner core muscles, fascia and ligaments are not able to hold your pelvic organs in place, and they descend… . Annotated Bibliography
Hass-Cohen, N. and Carr, R. (2008). Art therapy and clinical neuroscience. London; Philadelphia: Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
This book is absolutely crucial in understanding how Art Therapy works on a physiological level and how that relates and affects practice. Through developments in neuroscience the enormous benefits for Art Therapy can be explicated in a scientific way. It is particularly clear in elucidating how chronic stress affects an individual and how Art therapy can shift an individual away from primarily engaging a limbic-based instinctual reaction and move to re-engaging with their Cerebral cortex. The text also sheds new light on PTSD and C-PTSD and the major benefits that Art Psychotherapy can have in understanding the neurobiology of the stress response and how this might affect immune system, memory issues.
Hyland Moon, C. (2015). Materials & media in art therapy. Routledge.
This text provides a much needed analysis of the, largely ignored, function of materials in Art Therapy. Hyland explores the meanings implicit in materials but also why certain materials have maintained a privileged position within Art Therapy. Hyland asks the pertinent question: why, when most Art Therapists work with a mainly marginalised client base, do they utilise such self consciously ‘high art’ materials in their work? Hyland’s exploration of the innate intersectional issues in materials themselves is and adept reading of how these seemingly inanimate objects become full of nuanced symbolism and significance. Hyland wishes there to be a more ‘critically engaged’ relationship between the practice and materials. This text reflects my own concern with the power and a need for a more prescient panorama on the importance of materials in the practice of Art Therapy. Hyland also illuminates the importance of the intersection between Art Therapy and contemporary Art practices. Hyland cites Sara Bennett Steele’s work as an exemplary example of an Art Therapist exploiting a range of materials and techniques including the olfactory senses and a more joyful exploration of materialities including feathers.
Hogan, Susan & Cornish, Shelagh (2014) Unpacking gender in art therapy: The elephant at the art therapy easel, International Journal of Art Therapy, 19:3, 122-134, DOI: 10.1080/17454832.2014.961494
This journal article is part of a national survey conducted around Art Therapists to gain an understanding of how the intersectionalities of gender, race, class (and other factors such as religion) impact on the therapeutic relationship. This was incredibly useful for me in considering my own potential biases and how they may have the potential to impact on the relationship with my future clients. From the Art therapists surveyed it was concluded that generally Art Therapists consider gender at the point of referral and throughout. However, this idea is developed into a subtler postmodern understanding of gender as instead being labelled ‘sex’ which is obviously influenced by Feminist writers such as Judith Butler. The impact of this research is profound for Art Therapy training courses as the authors make it clear how important it may be for courses to offer more work on how gender is actually constructed and why.
Johnstone, L. and Boyle, M. (2018). The Power Threat Meaning Framework: An Alternative Nondiagnostic Conceptual System. Journal of Humanistic Psychology, p.002216781879328.
This journal article and progressive framework is probably one of the most innovative, pioneering and momentous ponderings of the problematic medicalisation of people’s mental wellbeing. The central tenet of Johnstone’s theory is that the current psychiatric model is not fit for purpose due to it’s reliance on theoretical models designed for understanding bodies-not minds. Johnstone calls on an abandonment of the ‘DSM mindset’ that has plagued the field of therapeutic work in lieu of a more integrated, holistic and perspicacious model. Johnstone does not negate positivism’s influence and advances but expertly persuades us of the need for a complete paradigm shift if we are to adequately work with an individual and their own sense of their wellbeing. Johnstone expertly demonstrates how a whole plethora of relational and social ‘adversities’ impact on an individual’s mental health. Assuming pathology is no longer fit for purpose within Johnstone’s groundbreaking structure.
Kuri E. Toward an Ethical Application of Intersectionality in Art Therapy. Art Therapy. 2017;34(3):118-122 DOI: 10.1080/07421656.2017.1358023
Kuri challenges a profession with a large majority of white, middle class women to challenge a tokenistic and shallow understanding and practice of intersectionality. Kuri argues the consequences of globalization and neo-?.≤liberalism have been disastrous and profound: resulting in models which favour ‘market compliance’ above a client’s needs. I value Kuri’s approach as I wish to practice in a way where I firmly identify my own social ‘location’. Intersectionality provides a non-polarising position with a myriad of different perspectives from which to work from. Practicing in an intersectional way requires an ability to be critical of pre-existing structures and an understanding of the colonialist epistemology and ontology surrounding Art Therapy rooted in ‘whiteness’ and being European. Kuri urges white professionals to not coopt intersectionality as merely a piece of ‘political and moral capital’. I too wish to use a framework which capacitates a client to achieving social justice.
Learmonth, M. (2009). The evolution of theory, the theory of evolution: Towards new rationales for art therapy. International Journal of Art Therapy, 14(1), pp.2–10.
DOI: 10.1080/17454830903006075
This journal article reflects some of my own interests in how evolutionary biology can elucidate our understanding of how and why art making is so crucial to us as human beings. Learmouth states “the arts are ubiquitous”; the suggestion is we are inextricably linked to art making and this could only be possible if it gave us a distinct evolutionary advantage as a species. This reflects my own belief that we are all innately creative and therefore my trust in the practice of Art Psychotherapy to provide a space and context in which to unlock this primal archetype present in our collective human unconscious. Learmouth tell us “Art…is so laden with fantasies of cultural superiority and inferiority that..(it) has become…something I can’t do”. We are reminded that for children play and creativity are woven tightly together. Play and the metaphors abundant in creativity are distinctly human traits to be celebrated.
Moon, C. (2000). Art Therapy, Profession or Idea? A Feminist Aesthetic Perspective. Art Therapy, 17(1), pp.7–10. DOI: 10.1080/07421656.2000.10129437
Moon expertly balances the need for an understanding of Art Therapy as a collection of ever changing ideas receptive to it’s continually transitioning environment but also a professional identity. Moon identifies that Art Therapy may always be in the process of defining and re-defining itself. This level of reflexivity and responsiveness to changing contexts and intersections showcases Art Therapies dynamic practice. Moon is not without critique of the ‘profession’ however, citing covert oppression which acts in a biased gatekeeping functionality affecting for example the amount of people who identify as BAME. Moon highlights the predominance of the female within Art Therapy as harnessing a different kind of aesthetic paradigm: creativity, flexibility an understanding of inclusion. I am personally drawn to Moon’s analysis of Art Therapy as a Profession and an Idea because I am passionate about Art Therapy as both an evolving and valid discipline.
Walker, M. (2010). What's a Feminist Therapist to Do? Engaging the Relational Paradox in a Post-Feminist Culture, Women & Therapy, 34:1-2, 38-58, DOI: 10.1080/02703149.2011.532689
This journal article clearly and efficiently interrogates a burgeoning landscape of the ‘language of post-feminism’. Walker is concerned with challenging intrinsic biases we have regarding gender (and also race). How a client might chastise the ‘imperfect’ mother instead of the absent father. That such biases are possible to unfurl safely with a client. Walker heralds the use of Relational Cultural Theory and its ability to challenge the ‘power over paradigm’ shift in society. At the foundation of RCT is the notion that people are innately drawn to connect and it is this connection that provides a therapeutic sustenance. Walker challenges the ‘discrepant’ images we create about women and around race. These ‘well camouflaged mechanisms’ of power can create therapeutic and existential issues for clients well coached in these powerful institutional and societal ‘isms’.
Winnicott, D. (1968). The child, the family, and the outside world. Harmondsworth, Middlesex, Penguin Books.
Although this text is an older tome the central themes echo through contemporary literature in the book’s innate intertextuality. Much of Winnicott’s central themes around context, early attachments and the transitional object abound in authors writing now. Winnicott’s lack of didacticism feels refreshing even with a prevailing modern eye. “By playing, the baby showed…something in himself that could be called …an inner world of imaginative liveliness” (p.79). Winnicott’s important investigations of what it is to be the mother/other are just as relevant today and are used by Beth Hoyes, Helen Omand and Deba Anna Salim. When Winnicott says ‘Destruction is important’, it makes me reflect on the challenge of putting that kind of patient reflexiveness into practice around un-making and non-making in sessions. To be able to embrace the wish to destroy as well as create, the need to sit in stillness as make an object or mark is a challenge for any practitioner. Winnicott clearly shows us that this is the necessity for any true empathic insight.
Stace, S.M. (2014) Therapeutic Doll Making in Art Psychotherapy for Complex Trauma, Art Therapy, 31:1, 12-20, DOI: 10.1080/07421656.2014.873689
This journal article is a precise analysis of how the ‘plasticity’ of materials and human-like qualities of dolls can provide a tangible object to explore the difficult dynamics that C-PTSD often conceals. Stace offers a broad range for references to support and elucidate the main body of her text which is in an in-depth case study of a client who found the use of making dolls incredibly transformative in her own art therapy. Stace asserts that is the creation of ‘meaning that can be crucial in alleviating symptoms of C-PTSD. The externalization of internal states through the doll is perceived as being one of the most emancipating parts of this work. I have a keen interest in trauma and complex trauma and this article provided a platform for me to delve into a particular area of ‘meaning making’. The autonomy the client experiences through realizing her internal struggle in a series of supposedly inanimate objects clearly shows the power of doll and figure making as a means of supporting those who have experienced C-PTSD.
Huet, Val (1997) ‘Ageing: another tyranny? Art therapy with older women, Hogan, S. 1997. (Ed). Feminist approaches to art therapy. London: Routledge p125-139.
I am a feminist and this whole edition is a thorough and wide ranging exposition of how Art Therapy practice can support these approaches. Huet’s article explores aging and the menopause through the lens of one of her groups for older women. Huet expertly navigates through the multitudinous issues that aging can bring up for women including their own mortality, sexuality and self esteem. This text is also a lesson in transference and counter transference that Huet herself experienced whilst running this group. Huet explores how the menopause is reflected in society: a less than favourable experience for most menopausal women. Regularly dismissed and ignored as their perceived sexual ‘potency’ has dissipated in a society obsessed by youth. Huet highlights the lack of research and evidence around aging by women for women. The group that Huet worked with find their individual and collective voice through experimentation with materials.
Rosen, M., Pitre, R. and Johnson, D.R. (2016). Developmental Transformations Art Therapy: An Embodied, Interactional Approach. Art Therapy, 33(4), pp.195–202.
This article cleverly explicates the transformative model of working directly with a client in an interactional way where joint art-making is encouraged. Zierer’s work is heavily referenced, including her use of the ‘push test’. The text explores how this intrusion/intervention can be safely managed between the client and therapist. It explores the notion that an Art Therapist can be a ‘challenger’ as well as empathetic. However, upon reading this text I felt I would utilise this method rather more intuitively instead of in a ‘take it turns’ model. The article illustrates how this receptive and reflexive technique of making art more symbiotically can elucidate surprising therapeutic results. This level of ‘heightened engagement’ initiates an intimacy between the client and therapist.
Der Kolk, V. (2015). The body keeps the score: mind, brain and body in the transformation of trauma. London: Penguin Books
This book has been profoundly important to me personally and also in regards to my training to be an Art Therapist. It is an authoritative study in how to transform trauma into something more manageable for the person who has experienced it. It includes Van De Kolk’s own inimitable career in psychology alongside other research and clinical discoveries in the field of trauma. He highlights the importance of art therapy and Polyvagal theory is discussed and the importance of neuroscience shedding new light on how trauma operates and how it might be salved. However, Van De Kolk particularly highlights the importance of whole body interventions: yoga, meditation and EMDR are all cited as crucial tools. Crucially he never cites one modality of approach as he acknowledges everyone’s journey through trauma is individual. The transformative perspective he adopts shows that it is often through great fragility that we find great strength.

8 Ways to Write Away Your Worries
You are worried about a litany of things, and it feels like these worries are pelting you in the head like balls from a pitching machine.
You are worried about your upcoming presentation. You are worried your house won’t sell. You are worried the weather will be terrible on your vacation. You are worried your daughter is upset with you. You are worried you said something offensive to your new colleague. You are worried you didn’t pay an important bill—or do something else that’s important. And you are worried about a hundred other things that you’re worried you won’t remember—or can’t forget.
Lynn R. Zakeri’s clients tend to worry about money and relationships. They tend to worry whether their kids are OK and whether they’re good enough. They tend to think “I have too much to do and not enough time,” or, the reverse: “I should be doing so much more than I am currently doing,” said Zakeri, LCSW, a therapist in private practice in the Chicago area whose passion is to help people figure out what’s wrong and help them feel better again.
Everyone worries. Some of us worry more than others. Some of us wake up worrying. Some of us fall asleep to the sound of worry bumping around in our brains.
This is when writing can help. A lot.
According to Sarah Allen, Ph.D., a Chicago-area clinical psychologist who specializes in anxiety treatment, a typical worry process looks like this: We have a negative or scary thought about a situation. Our amygdala shouts “Emergency! Emergency!” and kick-starts various physical changes. It releases adrenaline, producing a stress response in the body—such as muscle tension, increased heartbeat, and faster breathing. The adrenaline also affects our mind, making our thoughts race, and travel like a merry-go-round, “building up a catastrophic story of what we tell ourselves is ‘true.’”
What writing does, Allen said, is to help us see in black and white exactly what’s bothering us. It allows us “to be more objective and not just believe everything [we] feel strongly about.”
Writing down our worries also helps to interrupt the worry cycle, said Sarah Neustadter, Psy.D, a clinical and spiritual psychologist based in Los Angeles, who specializes in spiritual growth, suicide survivor grief, suicide prevention, grief, loss, existential heartbreak, and millennial issues. It helps us see more clearly, to intentionally find other thoughts to think, and to reconnect to the present moment, she said.
“We can usually find that simply sitting with pen and paper, writing in this very moment as if it’s a form of meditation, makes everything OK,” Neustadter said.
There are so many ways we can use writing to cope with our worries. Below, you’ll find eight writing exercises to try.
Start a daily journaling practice. For Neustadter, author of the book Love You Like the Sky: Surviving the Suicide of a Beloved, journaling every morning helps her navigate her worrisome thoughts. “It allows me to be in conversation with myself, be my own best friend, and to see the variables of a problem or situation more clearly. And then through my writing, I’m able to problem solve and identify what actions steps I need to take. [I am also able to] self- soothe through positive self-talk and reassuring myself that all is well regardless of my worries.”
For instance, she might jot down the many tasks she’s worried about—remodeling her balcony because of water leaks, dealing with insurance, paying the construction bill, needing to get her mercury fillings replaced, planning an event, scheduling a trip to New York City for a month, and finding a house-sitter.
After jotting down her worries and frustrations, Neustadter asks herself these questions, and writes the answers that arise: “What is the priority here?” or “What do I need right now to feel supported?” “I also reassure myself that everything will get done in the right time, and I only need to do one thing at a time.”
Distinguish between useful worry and unhelpful worry. “A lot of worries are about the future and writing them down identifies whether they are ‘what-if’ type of worries that probably won’t really happen, or something that has a potential solution,” Allen said.
That is, she noted that worry can be useful and spark action, which she calls “active or useful worry.” However, all-too often, we worry about things that can’t be changed or aren’t even a real problem—“just a scary, imagined ‘what-if’ that rarely even happens.”
Allen suggested putting all your worries on paper—“no matter how small or silly it sounds.” Then ask yourself these questions, she said: “Is this something I always worry about, but nothing ever happens?” “Will my worrying make this situation better or worse or have no effect at all?”
Split worries into what you can and can’t control. Similarly, Zakeri suggested folding a piece of paper lengthwise. On one side, write the worries that you have control over (e.g., “I’m worried my husband is mad at me.” You can talk to your husband and resolve the issue). On the other side, write the worries that you don’t have control over (e.g., “I’m worried it’ll rain on Saturday”).
Refocus on realistic solutions. When Tyra Manning would get stuck in a worry loop, she learned to write down her fears and feelings on the page. “As I contemplated each item I had written, I wrote a hopeful and realistic response to each worry listed.” For instance, when Manning’s husband was killed in Vietnam, she worried that she wouldn’t be able to support their young daughter. She worried she couldn’t afford to pay a sitter and pay her college tuition.
So Manning, an educator and author of the forthcoming book Your Turn: Ways to Celebrate Life Through Storytelling, wrote down a realistic, detailed budget that she could follow (and did).
She also worried that she “couldn’t provide enough love much less spend enough time” with her daughter because of the “endless hours” she was spending on completing her college degree. Again, she turned to writing, creating a schedule for her and her daughter to savor the weekends. These weekend outings strengthened their bond and, most importantly, Manning said, her daughter “knew she was loved.”
Consider these three categories. Zakeri also suggested creating three different columns: Need, Want, and Should. Then cross off the shoulds because they can wait. She shared this example: You need to pick up your child from school. You want to grab a snack with them. But you should skip the snack, and go to the drycleaners. Unless you need that suit tomorrow, the drycleaners can wait.
Keep paper and a pen on your nightstand. If you’re having trouble falling asleep because of your worries, jot them down, Zakeri said. She noted that this accomplishes two things: “It empties your head, and it reassures you won’t forget whatever it is that was keeping you up.”
Make an A and B list. This is another way to clarify your priorities, and get organized. According to Zakeri, A represents the non-negotiable tasks you’re worried about that must be accomplished today. B represents the worries that can wait until tomorrow. “Knowing they are ‘on your list’ can be relieving, but also knowing you are not focusing on them until A list is done can be relieving.”
Create a gratitude list. “In order to remind myself that all is well and of the blessings in my life, I’ll often make a list of the things I’m grateful for,” Neustadter said. “By seeing a list of the things that are working in my life, it allows me to refocus and prioritize what really matters, and thus reduces my worry.” For instance, her list might include everything from flowers and birds chirping to her health and family to running water and shelter.
Our worrisome thoughts can feel big, urgent, and uncontrollable. As Manning said, it can feel like we’re “getting caught in a whirlpool.” While we might not be drowning physically, we’re drowning in negative chatter, she said.
Even though our worries can feel overwhelming, we can shrink them. We can channel them into solutions—or we can reveal them for what they are: unhelpful, unreasonable, and illogical.
The key is to know the difference.
When Manning struggled to come up with positive responses to her worries, she turned to the Serenity Prayer.
“It became my mantra when I got sober through the good graces of members of my support group. They told me to say it five times out loud and if that didn’t work to start over. When I said the words out loud, it caused me to think about what I was saying. When I contemplated the meaning of the prayer, my brain couldn’t hold my worries in my head,” Manning said.
And, over time, the below words spoke louder than her worry:
“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change The courage to change the things I can And the wisdom to know the difference.”

Breaking up with Alcohol and Stepping into a Clear Life
Cecily Mak shares her personal journey and paradigm shift around the role of alcohol in her life.
“Whatever you do, don’t tell people you don’t drink. They’ll think you’re weird.”
Last night I attended an international boarding school reunion at a lovely rooftop venue on Park Avenue in New York City. I was among approximately 75 people of many ages, diverse backgrounds, and exotic nationalities, our experiences at a Swiss boarding school at some point in the last seven decades being the thread that tied us all together. I attended the reunion alone and knew nobody.
It’s always interesting to experience these types of events as a non-drinker. Whether it is a professional networking happy hour, a school fundraiser, a milestone celebration, or any of the many other types of professional or social gatherings comprised of mostly strangers there to meet, connect, exchange, possibly meet again, alcohol is almost always the common theme. Let’s face it: Alcohol is an excellent lubricant. A drink or more makes these events easier and often more fun. Our inhibitions lessen. We’re less intimidated by the unknown. We’re more likely to introduce ourselves, open up, share contact information, and sometimes more.
I’ll admit it: Though I still enjoy them, it is harder to attend heavily anonymous social or professional events without alcohol. It takes work to move through a crowd and meet strangers without the alcohol buffer. It’s often awkward to order a non-alcoholic drink and reassure the person asking “Yes, I’m sure, just a sparkling water for me, please.”
It’s also a little more tiring. A couple of hours is usually my limit. I meet the people. I do the things. I listen to the talk/toast. I exchange contact info. I have interesting conversations. Then, I’m finished. I’m thinking about getting enough sleep to be up and out the door for a run at 6am, not where we are all going to go to get some late night food and a nightcap (salty pizza and a double Oban with one rock being my historical favorite).
I am a regular at these gatherings and have been for most of my life. I was trained at a young age how to host and attend with style, grace, and just the right amount of drink. Starting in high school, carrying on through college, a brief chapter as a model in LA, three years of law school, three years at a law firm, seven years as a music lawyer, six years as a Silicon Valley executive, and now as a new entrant in the blockchain/venturing industry, I consistently attend a multitude of gatherings that include alcohol as a focal point, an essential part of the experience. A whisky tasting with colleagues in Dublin. Dinner followed by karaoke with the new team in Tokyo. Cocktails at the end of a grueling two-day offsite in Brooklyn. A wine tasting at high end Italian restaurant in Las Vegas. These are a few of the things I’ve attended without drinking alcohol, just in the last seven months.
I can then layer in the personal life experiences: twelve years (so far) as a mother with many wine-loving fellow-mom friends, eleven years as a professor (almost always hosting a round of drinks after our evening classes), and a fifteen-year long relationship with a DJ/burner/creative (imagine it and it probably happened). I’ve had my share of social and professional drinking and partying. I’ve delighted in the boozy client dinners, the champagne-soaked baby showers, the big nights out on the town with rockstars, endless day-night-days at Burning Man, sloppy family holidays, girls weekends galore, and plenty of amazing pinot noir tastings in spectacular environments with fascinating people.
If I’m honest with myself (and I’m getting better and better at this every day), I was headed in the wrong direction with alcohol when I decided to stop drinking almost two years ago. My years of “use” and enjoyment purely for enjoyment’s sake were behind me. I had evolved to a place in which I was (ab)using alcohol to dull, tolerate, to avoid, to endure. Lucky for me, I was inspired to stop before this (ab)use progressed further, possibly descending me into the grips of addiction and depression I witnessed take my mother’s life.
Choice Day, September 1, 2017 (photo by R. Dragonfly)
A gifted therapist I started to see several months after stopping, primarily to help me understand alcohol culture and some of the changes I am experiencing in embracing a sober life, has helped me put some terminology around this all. He tells me there are three levels of drinkers: users, abusers, and addicts/alcoholics. I was a bit disoriented in the beginning of my alcohol-free journey and needed some structural guidance, language-wise. I never felt like an alcoholic. I never had a DUI, I never went to rehab or needed AA. I just stopped only to realize my life is better without it. I also knew I wasn’t just a casual user either. I was drinking at least a little almost every day and probably more than I should have on some days. There were certain things I couldn’t imagine doing, people I wouldn’t see, places I didn’t want to go without a context-appropriate beverage in hand. And there were certainly mornings I awoke annoyed with myself for not drinking less the night before. But I had grown up and matured as an adult surrounded by loved ones, a social life, and a professional ecosystem that assured me that this was all just fine, normal in fact.
After a few conversations, we concluded that I was abusing alcohol when I decided to stop. This was more than casual use and not as serious as an addiction or alcoholic label. I was (ab)using alcohol to cope with a heartbreaking time in my life, to escape, to avoid, but not to celebrate. It took me some time to accept this. What I was doing for almost the entirety of my adult life didn’t look like abuse or a problem of any kind, it looked like what most of my friends and family were doing: a cocktail or two after work, wine with dinner, the occasional beers on the beach, the meandering afternoon-into-evening in wine country, mimosas with weekend brunches. In fact, many friends and a couple of family members have tried to talk me out of this seemingly austere decision. “You didn’t seem like you had a problem.” “I never saw you drunk.” “Are you sure you are choosing not to drink for the right reasons?” (This last one is particularly puzzling to me. Another post, another day.)
It all looked “normal” but I was drinking just enough to dial the volume of my inside screams down, calm my pounding heart, sometimes get to sleep. I was getting to a place of needing to drink to transition from work-mode to home-mode, from chore-mode to entertain-mode, from bedtime routine-mode to chill out on the sofa mode. I often felt I couldn’t really relax, socialize or be fun without a little kickstart. In some of the harder, final months of my marriage (and habitual drinking), I recall not even wanting to eat dinner with my family until I’d had a cocktail. Though it seemed normal and harmless enough, this meant less presence, less connection, less consciousness, less health, all things I celebrate and rejoice in today.
So, how and why did I stop?
It was pretty spontaneous. I’d met a few women in the years leading up to my own decision (my “Choice Day”) who inspired me. One was a new mom who didn’t want to be buzzed, ever, around her daughter. Another was an overworked executive who quit one day and discovered a love for running that has evolved into a thriving fitness-for-urbanites business. Another radiates health and attributes her clear eyes, glowing skin, and regular meditation practice to living alcohol-free.
I made the decision to stop in an unexpected and unplanned moment of shock and awe. I awoke before dawn on September 1, 2017, and knew in the core of my being that it was The First Day of the Rest of My Life. The previous thirty-six hours were a neon-lit array of events and circumstances that, strung together, confirmed once and for all that my marriage was over. I was in the middle of the desert at Burning Man, surrounded by thousands, profoundly alone, surprisingly at peace, and with great trepidation peeking over the edge of the other side of The Continental Divide of My Life. In this moment, I was reminded by a loved one that I needed to be as crystal clear and present as possible for at least the next thirty days. Decisions I knew I was going to be making and communications I knew I would be initiating would impact my children, my health, my finances, my community, my career, my family, and more for years to come. I knew that in order to make sure that this all unfolded as harmoniously as possible, I needed to be completely present (sober) in every moment. I didn’t want to look back on a single regrettable text, conversation, signature or kiss. There was no room for being blurry or loose. This was the time to be sharp, clear, feeling, and present.
It was surprisingly easy. I am very fortunate. I have not struggled to not drink. I haven’t needed AA, rehab, or any other medical/psychological support in making this profound change in my life. (That said, I can’t imagine having navigated these seas without the bright lights in love, friendship, and support from many amazing people I’ve been beyond blessed to journey with. Again, another post for another day.) I never went through withdrawals, battled cravings, or questioned my decision. In fact, I tell people all the time, I’ll have a drink when I want one. I just haven’t (and now that it’s all out of my system and I am fully embracing what I’ve affectionately called ClearLife, I doubt I ever will).
Cecily’s sons at Stinson Beach, Christmas 2018.
After thirty days, the positive impact on my life was so profound in so many ways, I started another month, and another. Sleep was deep and uninterrupted. My skin, eyes, and posture lit up. I started running early in the morning before work. I mastered my finances. My mind sharpened. My heart opened. I started to write again. Anxiety and fear withered into a memory. I have grown to be more comfortable with touch and eye contact with loved ones. I lost almost twenty pounds. Things that had been on a rolling to-do list for years were crossed off, energy freed up. Most importantly, what felt like a loving and functional relationship with my sons has evolved into a deeply powerful bond of mutual respect, understanding, and awe that I hadn’t fully experienced pre-ClearLife. And somehow there is no more yelling, anywhere. There was for a while, including between my sons and me.
In months three and four (the 2017 holiday season) there were a few evenings when I chose to consciously drink, experiment, yet these experiences were only affirmative; I was finished. The last drink I had was on December 29, 2017. There was a home-cooked steak dinner, a raging fire in a handsome fireplace, wonderful conversation, and peaceful sleep, but none of this was made any better by the cocktails or wine. Not knowing it was the last of the last, looking back, it was a beautiful way to say goodbye to what was no longer going to serve me.
Simply put, my life is better without alcohol. I could not be more grateful for the awakening, strength, and self-awareness that has empowered me to make perhaps the biggest decision and shift to date. And my kids are growing up with one parent who lives a pretty awesome and fun life, but doesn’t drink. I never had that example in my own childhood.
I don’t bring it up, but at events like last night’s reunion, sometimes it does come up in social settings. When I ultimately tell people that I don’t drink, most ask if I had a problem. Common responses include:
“Oh wow. Do you do anything or are you completely sober? Nothing?!”
“So, are you an alcoholic?”
“Oh, I’m sorry. What happened? Are you ok?”
“For how long? Is it forever?”
“Wow! I could never do that.”
Funny, alcohol is the only drug we need an excuse to not be taking.
So it was interesting when I was at the alumni gathering last night and one of the first (and only) people I spent much time talking to was a seventy-something year old man who also doesn’t drink. He’d just finished the Boston Marathon and was more fit and bright-eyed than most of my forty-something friends. We spent almost a half an hour talking about our common education experiences, marathons, travel, our careers, and how to stay healthy into and through our 70s when we stumbled into the “I don’t drink either” part.
“Whatever you do, don’t tell people you don’t drink. They’ll think you’re weird.”
This was thought-provoking. He went on to explain that he dodges the topic in his busy social and professional circles by being the life of the party and generally not getting into a discussion about alcohol if asked. (Meanwhile I’m wondering how he could possibly leave this detail out if answering questions about his health and fitness at his age.)
I’m driven to help shift this. I’d love to live in a place and time when it isn’t weird or stigma-inviting to not drink alcohol. There is a movement underway, somewhat reminiscent of what happened to Big Tobacco. Younger people are drinking less. The mocktail (or “zero-proof drink”) industry is exploding. The stigma associated with not drinking seems to be fading, despite the marketing muscle behind trying to keep us going. A growing list of celebrities are publicly opting out of the booze. We are spending billions of dollars a year on improving health through diet and exercise, but neutralizing all of this time and money spent with a steady dose of ethanol.
I don’t want my (our) kids to feel like they have to drink to have fun, be fun, or fit in. I also want to be able to talk about this if asked without inviting or suggesting judgment either way. So, here’s a baby step. Maybe if more of us are more open about our choices around alcohol (and there is a growing number of us!) we’ll be less weird over time.

How to Feel Safe in your Home as a Woman
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’ testimony on Thursday had me crying from the moment she walked through the door of the Senate hearing room. I understood her fear, her anxiety, and her apprehension to come forward. I know because I too have spent my life in fear from past events I had no control over. I have a strong memory of a grown man sticking his tongue down my throat when I was 3 or 4 years old. I’ve was shoved against the wall at a drunken celebration when I was 22 and kissed against my will. I lived in fear in college about drinking too much in public because I knew so many women who had been raped. I have a strong memory of someone chocking me with a scarf when I was about 12 …but the memories surrounding the event are blurry.
As a child and even to this day I can’t have anything too tight around my neck without experiencing severe panic. I can remember screaming at the top of my lungs as a child whenever my mother tried to put a turtle neck on me. I thought that I was just a little strange, but I realize now I’m not. I lived through something traumatic…and even though my early memories are in flashes it doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen…..and as a result I have safety issues.
And I’m not alone. Most women I work with or socialize with refer to this either directly or in passing. Their fear is a way of reliving their past trauma and trying to process it … but with our culture of shame around assault most women don’t feel empowered to voice the very thing that would enable them to work through the fear. My hope is that Dr Ford’s testimony and the #metoo movement that things will start to change….and I want to help.
So many things struck me during Dr. Ford’s testimony but professionally I was struck by what brought her and her husband to couple’s therapy in the first place….a deep desire for two front doors. When she said this it made total sense to me….because I’m the same way certain things. For example, I can’t be in a room with the lights on that has windows without closed curtains or blinds. It physically makes me uncomfortable and even paniced…and to be perfectly frank I don’t exactly know what the root cause is….but I have some ideas.
But professionally I have noticed that most women have at least one thing that they have set up or do in their homes because of past trauma. And I think it’s really important at this time especially if the hearing is bringing up feelings of anxiety around past trauma to evaluate what is triggering you…and if its sever anxiety to seek a therapist to talk it through.
After I had processed the mammoth emotional effect of the hearing one question popped into my head, “what if she’s never gone to therapy and just gotten the second door?” Would the second door actually have made her feel better or would it have served as a reminder of her trauma? In my experience women who make alterations like these in their homes feel better in the short-term but long-term the alteration becomes a daily reminder of their anxiety….instead of serving their initial intent which was to feel safe.
So let’s dig into the top three that I’ve seen….
Alarm Systems
One of the most common ‘go-tos’ for women when they feel unsafe is to get an alarm system. Now I’m not knocking alarms systems. I live in an urban area where break-ins are relatively common and I will probably get one when I buy my next house. However, I think it’s important to explore ‘why’ you’re getting an alarm before you pay for the installation and the monthly fees. Do you think that having it will subside a strong sense of anxiety or fear or do you simply want the police to be notified if someone tries to force themselves into your home. The two may sound similar but let’s dive a bit deeper because they’re actually two very different things.
if you think that an alarm system will ease your intense anxiety then you’re actually fighting the anxiety…which can make it worse and according to the law of attraction could actually attract more things into your life to be anxious about. So if this is you, here’s what I suggest. Ask yourself when in your past have you felt a similar intense feeling of anxiety and do your best using therapy or personal analysis to resolve your feelings from that past event.
Proceed with getting your alarm system if you feel inclined but take care of the visual cues that you are setting up for yourself as you enter your home. For example become aware that if you put an alarm sticker on your front door or in your lawn you are reminding yourself of your anxiety every time you come home. Now I’m not saying don’t put any stickers on outer windows, etc but become aware of your path….and think about it from a burglar’s point of view….is the average burglar really going to walk up to your front door and walk in? Put your stickers in all of the places that they may see as they’re scouting out the place ….so you cause them anxiety instead of you.
Curtains & Blinds
Ok. Time to move onto my anxiety-causer…..windows without curtains or blinds. And although I think its a pretty common feeling to feel safer when you have closed curtains or blinds when the lights are on your home…it can be much more intense for anyone who grew up in a home with poor boundaries where they constantly felt exposed and whose privacy was not respected. I know because me and many of my clients who have mentioned this very topic grew up in similar circumstances….and it’s not that ‘oh I need to close the curtains feeling'. It’s an almost paniced feeling that someone is going to get you if you don’t.
It’s an easy one not to deal with because basic safety practices are to close the curtains so burglar and other criminals can’t follow your movements ….so it’s a rational thing to do. It’s not that….it’s the intensity of your reaction that I recommend you pay attention to. What stories are you telling yourself will happen if you don’t close the curtains? When you walk past windows without window treatments what do you think about? Do you flash back to any specific moment?
Just take a pause ….and take a look at the root cause of your anxiety so you can let your curtains and blinds not be a reminder of fear but rather something that actually does protect you.
What you watch on TV
Bad things do happen, but they happen much more in our heads and our imaginations than they do in real life. We play out bad scenerios over and over in our heads especially if we have past trauma that we haven’t dealt with…..and we subconsciously pick television shows that feed into that anxiety. If you’d like to put it to the test stop and pause next time you finish watching an episode of a heart pumping gritty show like Law and Order or a horror movie like Halloween. Pause and think, is this really how I want to feel in my home?
Then choose a television show that feeds your intellect but also makes you laugh once in a while…and pause and see how you feel afterwards. From my own experience I know that it makes a huge difference. As I’ve slowly started to curate what I watch on television I’ve found myself feeling safer not only in my home but as I walk my dog through an empty park and simply going about my day.
In fact, Netflix has a section called “Strong Women Leads.” I choose from this section regularly and not all but most of them leave me feeling not only safer but empowered.
Do you want everything in your home to make you feel empowered?
Then check out my ecourse The Powerful Room. Not only does it include straight forward ways to declutter and decorate that will make sense to you on an emotional level, but it will fill your home with intention and help you to use your home …and office as a foundation to reach your most ambitious goals.

From the Fish Box
"Jimmy, Once again I ask of you to intervene and ask the fish to take and transform these afflictions into the nothingness  from whence they came, and to bring in healing and balance for my body to be strong and to thrive.  I know that The Fish will know what my body needs.....To me The Fish is the Christ presence....what else could do what it does..... and could come into me so powerfully as it does when you are communicating with The Fish. Thank you for your helping Spirit, Jimmy, I hope you can help me further.........Much Love........." - John D / Australia
