Buffy Season 1 Rewatch Teachers Pet
Ughhhhhh this episode has two very significant themes that absolutely destroy me.
1. Adults Who Believe In Buffy Die: the way this girl is constantly let down kills me. Every time an adult sees the potential in her, believes in her, is on her side, they die. The moment with her science teacher is so beautiful. Joyce thinks Buffy with fail. Principle Flutie thinks she will fail. Giles thinks she isn’t committed to her duty. And here comes a man who sees that there’s more to Buffy than meets the eye and believes in her and inspires her to believe in herself and he bites it. We will see this happen multiple times and it just kills me.
2. Men Who Want Buffy To Be The Damsel: Xanders fantasy in the beginning of the episode is to rescue Buffy while she is helpless and needs him. This is the same fantasy Angel and Riley have. Even though Angel appreciates Buffy’s strength and capabilities, his dream is still to be human with a (fully) human Buffy. He doesn’t love the Slayer he loves the girl. Now obviously these things all serve the story but it just rips my heart out.

Buffy Rants
I’m rewatching Buddy the Vampire Slayer! I’ve established a new headcanon about The Master. He’s been magically trapped underground for 60 years. At least some of that time we can assume he was in some kind of supernatural sleep if we take Luke’s “the sleeper will wake” thing literally. Yet he knows pop culture references he shouldn’t. While there’s always the whole “don’t read too much into it, it’s just a funny line” explanation, I like the idea that The Master is watching tv and films down there.
“I’m a vampire sooo old I’ve got permanent vampire face, but I’m still hella bored just waiting around in this sunken church. Bring me entertainment!”
And his vamp minions not wanting to be tortured for The Master’s amusement figure out how to get him a TV and VCR. (I’m pretty sure DVDs hadn’t reach the height of their popularity in 1997 so it would be tapes.) And they’re going to Blockbusters every night to get him new stuff to watch.

s1e10 Nighmares // s1e12 Prophecy Girl
[Image id: Two scenes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer side by side. One is from season 1 episode 10 Nightmares. The Master and Buffy are in a cemetery. The Master says “You still don’t understand, do you? I am free because you fear it. Because you fear it, the world is crumbling.” The other scene is from season 1 episode 12 Prophecy Girl. The Master and Buffy are in The Master’s layer. The Master says “You heard the prophecy that I was about to break free and you came to stop me. But prophecies are tricky creatures. They don’t tell you everything. You’re the one who sets me free. If you hadn’t come, I couldn’t go.” End image id]

So, I'm rewatching BtVS with a friend; I got them into it with promises of Spuffy and figured S1 would be a bit of a drag until we hit School Hard and the party really got started.
Instead, I'm frequently having to remind myself that the writers didn't have a comprehensive plan for the show as a whole, that they were adjusting things as they went and that many plot points--such as Angel's turning evil--likely haven't even been thought up yet.
For instance:
"Teacher's Pet", not necessarily the best episode even this season, but one with an interesting parallel. A mysterious stranger turns up and starts luring in susceptible youths before eventually turning and preying on them. Buffy senses something is up right away, pointing out that her fashion sense "screams 'predator'", and telling Xander he should really be wondering why Ms. French can't find men her own age. All of which is dead on.
And on the periphery, there's Angel, with his own secrets about his true nature, who is also pursuing someone significantly younger than him and raising certain 'predator' red flags--who was a predator earlier in his (un)life, as we eventually learn. Buffy, of course, doesn't have all the information, which perhaps explains why she misses the similarity, despite how good we've already seen her be at reading people.
I'm really sure the writers didn't intend this. But it still lends a potential redeeming quality to one of the more awkward early monster-of-the-weeks.

I just did a watch of Welcome to the Hellmouth and The Harvest. There’s so many amazing little things happening in those first two episodes.
1. The Music: there is so much 90s sitcom music happening. Especially at the end of The Harvest when they avert the apocalypse and it’s just Giles, Buffy, Xander, and Willow reflecting on what happened. The music sounds like it’s from an episode of 7th Heaven.
2. Everything David Boreanaz is doing is hysterical. You can tell it’s one of baby’s first real acting gigs. He doesn’t know what to do with his hands, his arms are swinging inexplicably, and he makes standing still look so painfully awkward.
3. The Wardrobe: We get some of the best and worst looks in these two episodes and it’s quite frankly, iconic. Buffy’s first day of school look literally defined a generation. However her first night at The Bronze look??? What is happening here? And let’s not even get started on Angels shiny plush velvet jacket. He’s giving hot topic vampire.
4. The Lighting: I love how dark season 1 is, it’s a total vibe and I have so much nostalgia for watching this show when it was first on TV. But there are scenes that are actually impossible to see (the opening sequence for example) and there’s a moment in The Harvest where Buffy shatters a window and you can just see where the prosthetics are glued to Luke’s face.
5. The Prosthetics: If you didn’t know, they changed the prosthetics because they were so hard to talk in! Darla is impossible to understand half the time and they had to change some of Jesse’s lines because he couldn’t say “s” words.
6. Darla x The Mythology: ok so obviously we know Darla goes on a journey. It’s funny to look back at these initial episodes and see her behaving in ways that feel out of character. She doesn’t seem to know much about Slayers. She’s easily defeated by some holy water and a cross (wielded by Willow and Giles of all people.) She’s deferential to Luke in a way that makes her seem higher in rank than a fledgling but certainly not the 500 year old vampire we come to know. There’s also so many small mythology things that don’t make the cut or are evolved over time. Giles has seemingly never encountered many supernatural creatures and is unaware of what a Hellmouth is. Vampires eyes glow in the dark and they have talon like nails. Buffy’s stakes look like coffee table legs. I love seeing how the show grows beyond these beginnings.
I’m excited to continue watching season 1. I almost always skip straight to School Hard in any rewatch of the series and it’s so much fun to revisit these early episodes.
