yesterday's first ultra

sunday

I'm valuing this medal as any other I've received because of the effort involved (there's a 100 mile medal, but let's work up to that). Having sliced the blisters on my feet and a restful overnight, able to limp around today - I'm that guy in a comedy sketch who has trouble putting on his socks after over-exertion.

Researched the Ultra and prepared as much as I could beforehand, I still felt pretty unprepared for going. Until you actually do it, you're really not going to know. It was a learning experience as it is in anything new. I definitely went into my 'pain cave' a number of times.

There was something Buddhist about the run - it's an event where you have to stay in the moment. You can't let yourself think about the 25 more miles to go when you're nauseous. And Buddhist in coming to terms with suffering.

Somethings to consider next time: carry a water bottle/hydrating vest. Being a road racer, I never carry anything, but it's different in an ultra. Even with the aid stations, I got dehydrated in between.

Speaking of aid stations, I spent too much time at each one looking for food and drinks - another reason to get some kind of a hydrating vest - spent about 5-10 minutes at each station, so probably about 40 minutes added to the run there. Ate so much and so fast at the 25 mile station that I became nauseous for the next 5 miles, along with the leg spasms.

And wear more sunscreen. My back looks like a lobster.

And like other Ultras I've read about, this one had some quirks. There's a bridge we cross several times, and it's raised for the ferries that go up and down the canal. The second time crossing it during the race, it was raised and we had to wait for it to come down - about a 10 minute wait that felt eternal. And a few days before the event, a gas main ruptured on the course, so the organizers had to reroute the race at the last minute. I felt for the race organizers.

Crossing the finish line, saw a can of PBR under a chair nearby. All I could yell was, 'that's what I need!' A volunteer was nice enough to get me a fresh can soon after. It was lukewarm, but the best prize I could ask for.

friday

Heading off to Bath/Corning, NY for the Wineglass Marathon this weekend. A nearby race, it's grown big over the years, some pretty good runners expected this year.

Haven't raced much over the summer, mostly distance training. Felt good in the tune-up half marathon a few weeks ago, though can't say how I actually ran it due to the course mix up. But things are trending up, hopefully it continues Sunday. Getting set.
