⚖️#ArtIsAWeapon "Artists have the ability to depict the humanity and the dignity of people, even in the midst of something brutal and violent ... It's a tough subject. It's a challenging subject. And we wanted to use art to help people manage the weight of this history and engage in a more complete way with the lives of enslaved people." - Lawyer, Social Justice Activist, Founder of Equal Justice Initiative @eji_org Bryan Stevenson @bryanstevenson1959 .

"An Alabama sculpture park evokes the painful history of slavery" by Mark Witaker March 17, 2024
"In Montgomery, Alabama, wedged between a maze of train tracks and the river, a long-neglected plot of land has been transformed. It's now home to the #FreedomMonumentSculpturePark, the vision of lawyer and social activist #BryanStevenson.
The 17-acre park, set to open this month, is filled with nearly 50 sculptures by world-famous artists like Kehinde Wiley, Simone Leigh. and Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, collectively evoking the history of slavery in America...
It's the latest project for Stevenson, founder and director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), also based in Montgomery. For more than 30 years, Stevenson and his team have provided legal services to people on death row, to date helping overturn more than 140 convictions and sentences. He said understanding the racial injustices of the present begins by reckoning with the tortured legacy of the past."

JUST MERCY: IT SHOWED HOPE
Tumblr media
BY Y
A racial, unfair and devastating movie that takes place while people are awaiting the electric chair, the death penalty... A movie inspired to show the movement of those who were unfairly convicted yet unfairly or wrongfully represented in the court of law. The movie titled Just Mercy directed by Destin Daniel Cretton was released in 2019. This movie received much recognition with nominations such as the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, BET Award for Best Movie, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Role in a Motion Picture, and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture.
After graduating from Harvard University, actor Bryan Stevenson led his way to Alabama to help those who were awaiting years with no advocate on their side. He wanted to defend those who were on death row, sentenced to die with either not enough supporting evidence to prove their “guiltiness” or just sentenced with no reasoning behind it. Throughout the years of him working, Bryan faced racism as well with legal political scheming as he attacked the cases of people on death row lives.  A specific moment that stood out to me was when Bryan took his first ever trip down to the jail to deliver news to a person in prison. He told the person that he would no longer be executed this year, which was the best news the person had ever received while being on death row because not only can his family come visit him but  he will no longer die. This moment stood out to me because it showed hope, the way the his face lit up made me feel so bad it made me feel sympathy.
Although this film didn't have the best quality or best up to date trending outfits or songs, it was based off of a true story. I personally recommend this movie 100% to anyone to show how unfair the justice system is, to show how one’s color can detect what they will be doing for the rest of their lives. 5/5 stars.

Today started off with a buzz. I jumped from ministry to work to cooking to connecting with friends...and then this: a group of our BEING family decided to go see Just Mercy, the film about Bryan Stevenson and the @eji_org I was deeply moved. Tears flowed. My heart leapt numerous times. And I left filled with hope and with a renewed sense of purpose as a filmmaker. These are precisely the types of films I want to make, the types of stories I want to tell. @michaelbjordan and @iamjamiefoxx did an incredible job carrying the weight of their characters. Michael B. has found himself in an interesting spot - to be afforded so many monumental roles, and it’s a joy to watch him grow in his greatness. Jamie has always been a fave of mine. His biopic work in Ray still leaves me breathless. I’m so glad I got to see this with the fam. Even our time processing afterward was so fulfilling and charging. You can’t walk away from a film like that and not want to talk and move your emotions around in you and through you so you can make sense of life and calling and responsibility as humans. Bryan Stevenson will truly go down as one of the greatest heroes of our day. Let us send him his roses while he breathes on this side of heaven! I am forever grateful for his sacrifice, grit, and courage. He is what so many of us dream to be...a man of virtue and justice and truth. My hat is off to you. May we all find our deepest convictions and pursue them at the level of being willing to die for them. The world will have no other choice but to change for the better. #justmercy #eji #bryanstevenson #racism #hope #justice #deathrow #redemption https://www.instagram.com/p/B7NoqGunQjL/?igshid=1gncavzphi6r0

Always Black, forever proud. #blackatapple — Today I joined US Black Apple employees in our first #blackout day in observance of Dr. #MartinLutherKingJr’s birthday. Tonight we’re taking over a theater in #SiliconValley for a private screening of #JustMercy. Two full circle moments. 1. When I was younger, people tried to diminish my passion for Black people by trying to label it as militancy. Today I help lead a Black community in one of the largest companies in the world, in one of the least diverse industries in the world. 2. Last year I had the HONOR of meeting #BryanStevenson and had the opportunity to tell him how much he inspired me and moved me after hearing him speak for the first time. Now I get to take my peeps to watch a movie about him. Life is crazy man. Thank You God for my fantabulous, weird and windy path. —— #blackgirlmagic #womenofcolor #style #fashion #hair #naturalhair #fro #ootd #writer #houston #htown #texas #cali #california #bayarea #sanjose #tech #technology #womenintech #womenintechnology #blackintech #black #community #justmercy (at San Jose, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7cQDS7gVR3/?igshid=1osa88n8n31c2

Wow! Just Mercy should be on every high school required reading list. It is a powerful novel on social injustice involving racial injustices, unfair legal acts against women and children, and hidden agendas from law enforcement and court officials throughout the past century and now. It is not an easy read. I’ve had to take several breaks from it and shed tears. Stunning. #justmercy #bryanstevenson https://www.instagram.com/p/B50RMaSD5tS/?igshid=1sfyvgvrldrkx

Our Black History Book of the Day is none other than 'Gordon Parks: The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957' published by @steidlverlag & @gordonparksfoundation When @life magazine asked Gordon Parks to illustrate a recurring series of articles on crime in the US in 1957, he had already been a staff photographer for nearly a decade, the first African American to hold this position. Parks embarked on a six-week journey that took him and a reporter to the streets of New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Unlike much of his prior work, the images made were in color. The resulting eight-page photo-essay 'The Atmosphere of Crime' was noteworthy not only for its bold aesthetic sophistication, but also for how it challenged stereotypes about criminality then pervasive in the mainstream media. They provided a richly hued, cinematic portrayal of a largely hidden world: that of violence, police work and incarceration, seen with empathy and candor. Parks rejected clichés of delinquency, drug use and corruption, opting for a more nuanced view that reflected the social and economic factors tied to criminal behavior and afforded a rare window into the working lives of those charged with preventing and prosecuting it. Transcending the romanticism of the gangster film, the suspense of the crime caper and the racially biased depictions of criminality then prevalent in American popular culture, Parks coaxed his camera to record reality so vividly and compellingly that it would allow Life’s readers to see the complexity of these chronically oversimplified situations. 'The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957' includes an expansive selection of never-before-published photographs from Parks’ original reportage. Read more via linkinbio. Edited with text by @thesarahmeister Foreword by @peterkunhardt & @glenndlowry Text by @nifleetwood @iambryanstevenson #gordonparks #gordonparksatmosphereofcrime #atmosphereofcrime #50sscrimephotography #crimephotography #sarahhermansonmeister #sarahmeister #PeterkKunhardt #GlenndLowry #NicoleFleetwood #BryanStevenson #blackhistorymonth #blackhistoryreading #blackhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ67_hilETV/?utm_medium=tumblr

This book has been on my TBR for a while but I've been delaying cause I knew it would be upsetting. This book is so so soooo important. Stevenson tackles the heartbreaking reality of the American justice system and how it disproportionately effects poor Black & Brown people. Honestly I you don't read this and feel a little bit enraged and motivated to help change the system I don't know what to tell you. Also the meme is 💯 🎯 #JustMercy #restorativejustice #meme #BryanStevenson #antiracist #BookRiotReadHarderChallenge2021 #nonfiction #decemberreads #Nerdymama #nerdybooks #BlackGirlsReadBooksToo #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CXEPaBpLBRC/?utm_medium=tumblr

I'm currently reading "The Sun Does Shine", the memoir of Anthony Ray Hinton, a man who spent 30 years on death row for a crime he didn't commit. It is because of stories like these why the Equal Justice Intiative (@eji_org) exists. The story of Mr. Hinton is so close to home---actually right here in my hometown in Jefferson County, Alabama. If you don't read anything else this summer, add this book to your reading list. A powerful story of hope, love, justice, forgiveness, and freedom. This book is also part @Oprah's 2018 Book Club. I'm grateful that Mr. Hinton is able to share his story with the world. I pray that this will be part of a movement for change when it comes to injustice.

I can’t wait to visit this museum/monument! Great work #BryanStevenson and @eji_org! This @60minutes video with @oprah was exactly the perfect precursor. The idea behind the pillars is heartbreaking to view and I’m sure it’s just as sad in person. Great job to the whole team.
