I'm not going to be the first person to say it but the astroturfed drag queen story hour controversy looks a bit weird if you're British and went to pantomimes as kid

much as it pains me to add to the hated tumblr post genre of Brits smugly explaining British culture to Americans, and much as I do not have the followers for anyone to give a single fuck anyway, I'd just like to say -

there's a British tradition called pantomime, which is basically musical theatre for kids and parents, with lots of jokes and call and response. pantomimes are presented each Christmas in pretty much every theatre in the country, because it is massively popular and a guaranteed money spinner for the theatres. it tends to be themed around a fairy tale rather than anything specifically Christmassy, it's something that crosses class barriers, and isn't connected to LGBT+ culture, unless you think all theatre is LGBT+ culture.

anyway, in almost every single one of these productions, there is a bloke dressed as a woman.

the so-called pantomime dame is in pretty much every single pantomime production. there is never a sexualised aspect to it - like a lot of drag performances, it's a joke, and done for entertainment purposes, not for titillation. it would honestly surprise me if there were no gay actors playing panto dames, but it is not a role reserved for gay men or full time drag queens.

a panto dame is typically (but I don't think universally) not feminine beyond the cross-dressing - they are very masculine, and that's the joke. the basic idea of the panto dame is to have a coarse, masculine, typically overweight man playing the male hero's mother. there is not, to use the parlance of our times, a great deal of emphasis on 'passing'. the idea is more to have a big bloke in a dress shouting something like, 'ALADDIN! I told you to stop riding that bloody magic carpet all hours of the night! it's dangerous, and you crashing down on the roof at 3am is interrupting my beauty sleep!' or maybe 'magic beans!? magic bloody beans??!? I sent you out with the last money we have for a loaf and a pint of milk, and you've come back with magic beans?! you magic muppet!!'

again, this is part of entertainment for children. no one gets upset about it; it fits into a wider British cultural trend of cross-dressing within family-friendly light entertainment. rooted in the aforementioned music hall tradition (which was, to be fair, not family friendly at all), cross-dressing has been a fixture of British TV comedy since at least the 70s, with shows like Allo Allo and Are You Being Served. Paul O'Grady, an openly gay and frankly pretty saucy drag performer, was a fucking daytime game show host, while in drag, in the 1990s.

and for anyone worried that this attitude has turned British culture into a degenerate, disgusting sex-pit where LGBT+ people aren't scapegoated and despised, think again - Are You Being Served didn't prevent Section 28. Eddie Izzard's gender-fluidity and Grayson Perry going on panel shows in drag hasn't slowed down our media's obsession with attacking and fearmongering over trans people. and it hasn't stopped British far-right goons from jumping onto the drag queen story hour controversy. you gotta wonder if they take their kids to the panto too... but those guys don't work, so maybe not.

of course, Americans angry about drag queen story hour would a) not have read this in the first place and b) already made a connection between pantomime and British attitudes toward dental hygiene, which means they don't have to take this seriously. they might also argue that drag perfomers acting in a more feminine way is what's dangerously sexual about it - I'd counter that if you find men acting feminine inherently sexual, that's on you.

Like these guys like are homophobic/brought up like that but the amount of dance perfomances just make me laugh like they have a very vague idea on what being gay is and can connect this is alluding to the character being gay but they still want to do it. )(tbf what the west think is gay like hugging,holding hands,actually taking care of your friends is normal platonic things to do here so maybe that is a factor but still )

You stand there, staring at the reflection of yourself in the mirror. The tight black velvet bodice accentuated your curves, the black raven feathers cupping at your breasts. Your hair was down, a delicate gold crown circling the top of your head. You had on fishnets, a pair of black stilettos your feet. You admitted to looked beautiful, your makeup was done dark and smokey, your cheekbones and jaw chiselled, making you look fierce, like a queen.

A knock on the door causes you to jump, turning to the door

“Come in”

Your boyfriend enters, his suit of yellow and purple making him look like a bubble of happiness. He looked glorious, but stood there, he looked delicious, 

“I don’t think I want anyone else to see you in that” He whispers, walking to you. You smile and place a kiss to his lips, relaxing at the warmth of his hand on your waist. Your red lipstick is smudged on his lips slightly, you lean up and wipe it with your finger, allowing your fingers to linger on his cheek for a moment.

“You're on in two” A man shouts through the door, knocking it at the same time

You take in a shuddering breath, looking up to Harry as he takes your hands.

“Come, you’ll do great, I’ll walk you and wait for you at the table” 

You smile and nod, taking his hand and allowing him to drag you towards the stage. He gives you another quick kiss as you walk to the stage, only letting go of your hand as your ushered up onto the stage, a man with a light leading you to the top of the stairs that you were to walk down during the performance. 

“Here’s your mic, look to the back for your que” The man whispers, nodding to you before disappearing behind you. 

You take in the crowd, the celebrities scattered around the room, all sat at tables with drinks in their hands. You take in a deep breath and stand ready, your mic in your hand as the announcer calls your name, causing the crowd to start screaming, you look to Harry as he whistles out, his hands clapping as the music starts, the men around you begging the dance that they had rehearsed over the last week. 

You smile and begin to sing, ignoring the nerves and allowing instinct to take over,

‘Mirror, mirror on the wallDon't say it, 'cause I know I'm cute’

You continue through the song, allowing the men to help you down the stairs, all kneeling before you as you dance across the stage, holding your hands out to the crowd as you step down the platform and into the surrounding celebrities,

You smile as you see Harry dancing, a drink in his hand, enjoying the atmosphere around him as he cheers you on. You walk to him, dancing through the celebrities with a smile as you come to him, placing a hand to his chest as you turn and sing,

‘Don't dare try to cop a feel (ooh, baby)The juice ain't worth the squeezeIf the juice doesn’t look like this’

You can sense the smirk he’s giving you even with your back turned. You feel his hand squeeze your ass lightly and laugh, slapping his hand as you rush back towards the stage, 

“Brits are you ready” You shout, the roar of the crowd fueling you as you continue to dance. You point out towards Harry and then hold up the finger with the engagement ring on, smiling as you hear the screams,

‘Somebody come get this manI think he got lost in my DMs, what? My DMs, what?You better come get my manI think he wanna be way more than friends, what?More than friends‘

You laugh as you continue, finishing with your hand in the air and the screams of the crowd around you filling your ears. You smile and wait for the que to leave before walking down the steps, straight into your man's arms,

“That was the greatest performance of the night, no one can beat it” He whispers, kissing beneath your ear as he ushers you backstage to get changed into your dress, 

“You think?” You ask, leaning up to kiss him once more,

“Oh definitely”
