"GameFreak is what's holding back Pokemon"
You asked and The Pokemon Company listened: presenting the first non-GameFreak core Pokemon game!
Tumblr media
It's a stripped down port remake that misunderstands the art direction of the classic that it salvages for nostalgia bait! Oh, you don't like this?
How about a heavily monetized version of Google Maps?
Tumblr media
Do you see what I'm saying here? Replacing GameFreak isn't going to give us better games. Without them, Pokemon will just hire the cheapest studio willing to make their soulless nostalgia bait. Pokemon's main profit comes from merch and that's all they need to sell it.
I know GameFreak is no victim, but I'm defending them because I don't want them to go away. They speak like they honestly love what they do, and I just don't want gamers to kill that.
Edit: ILCA isn't a bad studio, and Niantic...well that's a different can of worms. Also, I'm not talking about side ventures like Pokemon New Snap. There's no reason to rush that because the franchise doesn't depend on it. My point is, no matter what company they hire to make the games the franchise depends on, The Pokemon Company will rush them for their merchandise schedule.
Edited to remove the assertion that The Pokemon Company held back ILCA's vision for BDSP. As commenters pointed out, the source did not substantiate this claim.

I'm saddened to say that this might be the first year since I was five that I will actively not buy the new Pokemon game.
I just don't think I can, in good concience. Pokemon Sword and Shield had completely disappointed me. All the hype I had for this game was completely crushed upon finding out that I would not be able to transfer all of my pokemon.
Look, I don't really care about the national dex. It didn't bother me in Sun and Moon. What I care about is the fact that all of the time, money, and most importantly, love, that I have poured into these games and collected throughout the years is just...spat on. Because Game Freak wants to cut corners at every angle and make money instead of taking the time to make a product with love and care that shows all the years of dedication they have put into this franchise.
I get it, almost 1000 pokemon? It's a lot. But even if no availability till post-game like Black and White, or a patch over time like with X and Y's pokemon bank debacle would be enough! During the clips for Pokemon Home they spoke about how important keeping all of your pokemon through each game is to people, and they can't even do that! They won't even do that, EVER. They stated that THIS would be their new policy going forward, PERIOD. That means EVERY GAME. Sinnoh remakes included. And I can't support that.
As many have said already, "Gotta Catch 'Em All" is the slogan, the selling point, what we all know it by. And now? I can't even do that anymore. I don't care about Dynamaxing. I don't care about the stupid four person raids to try and implement more shitty GO features. I don't care about the wilds. I care about playing a pokemon game made with the same love and care that used to be the standard. I care about them putting their effort into making the best game possible, even if it takes years of waiting. What I DON'T care about is the next line of "New Gameplay Features!" and a shiny new landscape that they can't even produce without the famerate dropping as they try to top what they did last gen despite never listening to the fans.
I care about pokemon. And I'm sad that I might have to put it to rest for the forseeable future now. But I can't support this anymore if this is the new direction.

Pokegandas, if you don’t mind the question, what’s your take on the Dexit contreversy, and will you still be buying the games?
I, personally, will still be buying SwoShi. I’m still excited to venture into a new reigon with new pokemon, stories, and characters, even if I can’t bring my old teams with me on the way. Of course, I would be much more eager if I could carry over my beloved teams and shinies, but at the moment, I’m eager for what I can get.

You know its absolutely amazing how maybe a week ago Pokemon had done everything right. They had a badass knight raven, they had MOTHAFUCKIN WOOLOO WOOO and they had kaijus, interesting characters, and the wild area.
Now its practically in the gutter lol. I am a fanboy but yikes. They messed up. I wouldn't be shocked if they decide to add the rest of the pokemon they took out as a patch, but game freak is very stubborn and probably won't. They'll include all of them as a selling point in the next one tho, bet on that.
So since it's okay to talk about it now without getting death threats, we need to chat. I've actually had my grievances with Game Freak for a while and did defend them a bit, but no more.
Since 2013 they've shilled gen 1 with mostly gen 1 megas until the Hoenn remake where they still made more Kanto megas, and refused to make Alolan forms that weren't Kanto pokemon
They took out battle frontier in oras because Masuda thought mobile games would compete with it
They dumbed down LGPE because he seriously thinks mobile games are more competition and to appeal to fans that dropped after gen 1. Even with the shitty catching controls he calls it his magnum opus. What.
They've consistently refused to design at least 100 new pokemon for gen 6 and 7, probably 8 if we're being realistic. No, megas, variants, and forms do not count or else each unown and Arceus would be a separate pokemon.
While I enjoyed ultra sun, it should've been dlc.
LGPE also limits you to 153 pokemon, 2 of which you need shitty Go for.
Introduced walking with your mons, took it out, then added it back. And probably took it back again
Megas and variants are still cool. Refuse to make more and blame art block for no mega Flygon instead of hiring someone who CAN make one
Took out events where you got actual story and lore and actually got to fight and capture these legendary and mythical pokemon in favor of handing out codes or going to gamestop or just being HANDED these mythical beings because MASUDA thought the Azure Flute was too complicated
And while we're at it, some other grievances
2019, Gyrados and Steelix have to be dynamaxed to be close to their accurate sizes. Hmmm.
2019, these "better, more intricate animations" still has Scorbunny hopping once or twice to use Doublekick when Stadium and Battle Revolution had actual movements for the moves
2019, still no game like the beta footage for Battle Revolution where Groudon hyperbeams a battlefield and HALF OF DEOXYS APART.
2019, (at least as of now) we're still tweens (BW and XY being 16 and 18 if there's any exception) with the same faces and bodies and halfassed customization options for our trainers. Most fans that play are in college or older, or at least late teens. Just saying from my own experience. The character customization should allow us more freedom with that to look older or different.
Yeah, it's time to start calling them out for it. Space ain't an issue when you can use system and SD storage space or patch shit in, and ESPECIALLY an HD system that rivals the PS4 and Xbox One. Maybe instead of prioritizing a gamble that may or may not make it like Town, you should focus on your bread and butter! Just sayin!
I'm actually going to wait this time around to buy used because I can't justify paying $60 and more for games and services that won't even allow my favourites in after beating the elite 4. And I definitely can't justify Home simply because of this:
The only place Home can send pokemon to is SwSh. Everything else is one way to Home.
If SwSh doesn't have your favorite in the pokedex, its stuck in Home until they decide to make a compatible game for it. That's not fair to the consumers.
Bank will eventually stop service. At that point, if this issue isn't fixed, you either leave your pokemon collection in Sun and Moon/Ultra, or you imprison them in Home until they decide to include them. Also not cool.
Balance is bullshit for an excuse. Just ban Landorus, MegaQuaza, The Tapus or anything else you want to get rid of from competitions, but let us have them in the game.
They keep saying "we're working very hard to do X" and using all sorts of buzzwords but if this is too hard for Game Freak, maybe give it to someone who can take it seriously! I'd be down to see Sakurai or Monolithsoft try making a Pokemon game. Or give it to the Dragon Quest guys at Square Enix or the Digimon Story guys at Bandai Namco to let them make phenomenal games.
Listen, before you tell me to off myself for this or call me names, we deserve a better pokemon game. We deserve creators that don't just phone it in or are afraid to try anything new after piracy and ice cream/garbage "ruined" gen 5 apparently (it absolute did not btw and anyone who thinks so are fuckin morons).
This is the minimum requirement every pokemon game needs. The MINIMUM.
ALL POKEMON SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN THE DAMN GAME. This doesn't mean they have to be caught! Doesn't mean there has to be a national Dex either! Sun and Moon didn't have it but had all 800+ pokemon in the files, and they were 3ds games! $90 billion, make it work.
At least 100 original pokemon that are not alternative forms or variations, none of which are legendary or similar. $90 billion company. Hire more artists.
That's it! If you can't even do that, then give it to someone who can. Simple.
When you get down to it, there's a reason #bringbackthenationaldex trended and the treehouse video plummeted with dislikes.
"We're making this game for long time fans" was a lie I guess.
Rant over.

Pokemon Home is a Team Rocket scheme to steal your pokemon and lease them back to you.
Tumblr media
Up front I want to be clear, this is not to hate on Pokemon Sword and Shield in and of themselves. As stand alone pokemon games they look good, great even, and if you're looking forward to them with eager anticipation, that's great too. But for me, the feeling is more dread and dismay, and the reason why is Pokemon Home.
There are lots of ways to love and things to love about the Pokemon games. From solo adventures to trading with friends to competitive battles online, there's something for almost anyone, but from the very beginning one of the core appeals of pokemon has been collecting. It's right there in the theme song: "Gotta catch 'em all." While some pokemon fans just play each game in turn, many lovingly cultivate a menagerie of pocket monsters from game to game catching and naming and training them all.
Tumblr media
From that completionist's perspective, a key feature of Pokemon as a franchise, the thing that elevates it above all the other monster collecting games that have followed in its wake, is that you never need to leave that collection behind. For years you've been able to take your pokemon with you, watching your collection grow from game to game and generation to generation. You could feel free to spend hours naming and training and growing attached to each little packet of bits and bytes, confident they'd still be with you years and games down the line.
That continues with generation 8, but there's been a fundamental change. For the first time since generation 3, you can't bring all your pokemon into the new games. Instead they're supposed to live in "Pokemon Home," a cloud based paid subscription service, from which only a curated selection of pokemon will be available in any individual main series game going forward.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Home is a trap. Once you transfer your pokemon to Pokemon Home, on a fundamental level they simply aren't yours anymore. That's that’s the Pokemon Company's collection now, and they’ll get to decide which you get to play with, when and how you access them, and most importantly how much you'll have to pay them for the privilege.
If they only want to charge you only a small nominal price for the first year? That's great. But maybe next year they decide they want a few more bucks a month. Or a few dozen. What are you gonna do? They already have your pokemon. If you want access to them, you'll have to pony up. Worse still, if you miss too many payments you’ll be risking a one way trip to the pokeglue factory for all the pokepals you've gathered over the last decade or so.
Tumblr media
"Stop being an alarmist," you might be thinking. "Pokemon Home is just an updated version of Pokemon Bank, and Pokemon Bank never had exploitative pricing." And you’d be right.  Heck, I myself loved Pokemon Bank and have happily taken advantage of the convenience it offered, considering it well worth the price.  But this is where Sword & Shield (and, according to dev interviews, all main line Pokemon games going forward) not supporting all past Pokemon makes all the difference.
In the 3DS era, the new Pokemon games always supported all pokemon up to that point. If the Pokemon Company ever did hike the price of Pokemon Bank to something unreasonable, you could always just transfer your pokemon to the latest games & stop using the bank entirely. With Pokemon home, you can't do that. Once your collection is transferred to Pokemon Home, at least some portion of it will always be stuck in the cloud. You will never be able to take it all back. You'll have to keep paying those fees in perpetuity, however high they become, or say goodbye forever to at least some portion of your pokemon.
And while the price for Pokemon Home isn’t yet confirmed, you can already see the groundwork being laid for a significantly higher fee than Pokemon Bank. After all, it doesn’t just transfer pokemon between games, it also lets you trade pokemon online via GTS and Wonder Trade. With that increased functionality, of course we should expect an increased price.  It’s only fair, right? Never you mind that GTS and Wonder Trade used to be just part of the game in previous generations, no additional charges needed. And whatever the fee turns out to be, it will be on top of having to pay for Nintendo's internet service to even access Pokemon Home from your Switch to begin with.
Tumblr media
Just because Gamefreak *could* exploit the heck out of this new system doesn’t mean they definitely will, but if there's one thing we all should have learned in recent years, it's that corporations, even the ones that make the things we love, are not our friends. You give them an inch and 9 times out of 10 they will take the proverbial mile. Their shareholders will insist on it.  Nowhere is this more true than in the realm of AAA video games, where the industry has stumbled from pre-order bonuses to micro transactions to loot boxes, gorging at each table in turn like a ravenous snorlax.
In the past, the Pokemon franchise always seemed to be above stooping to such indignities.  After all, between cartoons and films and merchandise, they never needed to, and turning the games into exploitative cash grabs ran a risk of tainting the brand.  Why take that risk over a few petty portable games when the big bucks were in children’s card games anyway?  Then Pokemon Go proved that the pokemon fandom was more than willing to put up with a little “nickle and dime”ing if meant more pokemon in our lives.  With Pokemon Home I fear we’re about to pay the price for that Giratinian bargain.
Maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe Pokemon Home isn't just a cynical corporate ploy to turn Pokemon from a series of fun games into a (shudder) "live service".  But even if Pokemon Home wasn’t deliberately designed to take your pokemon hostage, that’s still in effect what it’s doing by letting you transfer some pokemon in but not back out.  And even if Pokemon Co. never charges more for Home than they did for Bank, that still doesn't mean your pokemon are safe there. Budgets are tight and there are more and more bills and subscriptions eating away at our wallets with each passing day. Who's to say that even an extra $5 a year might be too much for pokemon at some point? If that point ever comes for you, that’s still just too bad for whatever pokemon you have on Home that can't be transferred to whatever games are currently supported.
Tumblr media
Again, this is not to bag on Pokemon Sword and Shield. So far they look like fine stand alone Pokemon games. The wild area is a bold step forward, raid battles sound fun, I love all the new pokemon we've seen so far.  And after the recent Godzilla movie I'm super hyped for some kaiju sized dynamax pokemon battles. I mean, that's been a dream since the giant tentacruel in the first season opening of the anime! The development team for Pokemon Sword and Shield are clearly talented and committed people who care deeply about the pokemon franchise and its fans, and have worked very hard to bring us the very best games they could - or at least the best games that their corporate bosses would allow them to make.
No, the problem here isn't Pokemon Sword and Shield, it's Pokemon Home - the control it gives the Pokemon Company over our collections, the daggers it hangs over the heads of our pokemon, the syphons in sticks into our wallets.
So if you're still looking forward to Sword and Shield, by all means, buy them! Play them! Enjoy them!  But DO NOT BUY Pokemon Home. Do not transfer your collection to it. Not until Gamefreak changes their tune and recommits to supporting all pokemon in these and all future main line pokemon games, so that Pokemon Home can never be used to take your pokemon hostage.
Until then, Pokemon Home simply isn't a safe home for your pokemon.
Tumblr media
And for Arceus's sake, those who have been making a stink about this, keep it up. Don't actually harass the developers, don't threaten anyone, don't attack fellow fans who don't see the problem.  But keep the pressure up on Gamefreak and Nintendo and the Pokemon Company and, heck, maybe thrown some shade in Warner Bros. direction. As we've seen with online friend play in Mario Maker 2, sometimes the squeaky wheel really does get the grease.
It’s likely too late to fix this before relase, but Gamefreak can patch the needed functionality in at any point after launch.  We don't have forever, though, there is a ticking clock. Pokemon Bank still probably has a couple years of life left before it's put out to pasture, along with online support for the 3DS era Pokemon games in general. There’s plenty of time before that for Gamefreak to change their minds, but if this problem isn’t fixed by then Pokemon fans will be faced with a painful choice - either hand our pokemon collections over to the Pokemon Company as hostages, or else leave them to fossilize in our gen 7 games, never to join us on future pokemon adventures again.

I watch a decent amount of Pokémon content on YouTube, especially in the months leading up to new games. (I gotta get my speculation fixation. No matter how questionable the “leak’s” source might be, it gives me something to chew on between official announcements.)
Anyway, a common theme lately has been the whole #bringbackthenationaldex controversy which renews cries to boycott the upcoming game. What I find fascinating though is the occasional content creator who supports the boycott. Like, if you have a passion for Pokémon and want your channel to be your primary source of income, but you don’t plan on getting the new games, then uhhhhhh you’re not gonna be climbing that Pokémon content creator pillar anytime soon—you’ll be falling behind.
But what I anticipate is those same content creators that call for a boycott and THEN buy the game for their let’s play videos. Fans of those channels will probably be upset because like they were told not to buy it from their favorite content creator, but that same guy turned around and bought it anyway.
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t have expectations from corporations that we buy products from. I would also like the national Pokédex be brought back, but I also know that we’re asking a lot of from a company that churns out a new game almost year or two. I’d like to be mad at the corporation but respectful to the workers who put the product together. (It’s likely harder than we give credit for. I’m sure most of us have jobs that are harder than the average thinks it is.)
What I want to focus on, is the people with a platform saying one thing and then seeing how it plays out when the game is released.

Today I decided it was finally time to transfer my two shinies from Emerald over to Soul Silver.
Y’know, it’s a real shame that GameFreak decided that certain mons not in the Galar dex can’t be moved over to Sword/Shield, especially since I’ve bonded with this Mightyena in particular throughout my whole Emerald run. But I guess that doesn’t matter to GF, huh?

Speaking of shelling out the money for Sword/Shield...nobody’s even brought up Switch Online yet.  Let’s Go required it for trading and battling so Sword and Shield probably will, right?  So let’s get this straight:
Gen 7 - All Pokemon and free online ($40) + Full compatibility via Pokemon Bank ($5 per year) = $45.
Gen 8 - Half the Pokemon ($60) + Paid Online ($20 per year, best deal) + Gated compatibility Pokemon HOME (likely more than $5, unconfirmed) = at least $85 for the comparable next gen package.  Almost double.
(Add in at least one more hypothetical $60 future game with the rest of the Pokemon if you want to USE your other Pokemon Home transfers.)

Real talk, heart to heart
Y'all I get being upset that your favorite pokemon won't make it into sword&shield, but this #bringbackthenationaldex shit is embarrassing. Gamefreak doesn't owe y'all anything, and you not buying the game isn't going to hurt them. These thirty+ year olds who are "the original fans" aren't their target audience. It is, always has been, and always will be children that Pokemon is making these games for. They aren't ruining your childhood or short changing you by excluding some Pokemon, they're doing it on purpose and no amount of complaining online is gonna make them change their minds. Y'all sound like genwunners complaining that things in gold and silver are different. As we move through time, it's a treasure even getting more Pokemon games in general. Complaining about them loudly and to official accounts make the "fans" look less mature than their ages 6+ target audience.

Lmao at the Pokémon fandom
“The lack of a National Dex after all the hype they created for Pokémon Home is jarring and has made people frustrated.”
“I’ve had this Pokémon with me for 15 years and I won’t be able to take it with me despite our adventure together.”
“I’ve spent thousands of hours breeding / completing a living dex / collecting event Pokémon o would like to cycle out and use in game.”
Meanwhile the rest of you out here crying “WAH WAH ENTITLED BABIES HOW DARE YOU WANT A GAME WITH GOOD GRAPHICS AND POKÉMON. ITS A POKÉMON GAME AND YOU EXPECT ALL THE POKÉMON? PATHETIC.”
Keep on shielding game freak I guess. You’re the reason videogame companies have developed and used shitty practices.

Me in 2016 waiting for Pokemon Sun and Moon: Man I wish the hackers wouldn’t have gotten roms or early access and spoiled the games for people. Me in 2019 waiting for Pokemon Sword and Shield: Gamefreak is making us pay for a 60$ half-assed game that we can’t transfer our old pokemon friends to........ If anyone is gonna play it, please pirate the ever-loving crap out of it.
