"GameFreak is what's holding back Pokemon"
You asked and The Pokemon Company listened: presenting the first non-GameFreak core Pokemon game!
Tumblr media
It's a stripped down port remake that misunderstands the art direction of the classic that it salvages for nostalgia bait! Oh, you don't like this?
How about a heavily monetized version of Google Maps?
Tumblr media
Do you see what I'm saying here? Replacing GameFreak isn't going to give us better games. Without them, Pokemon will just hire the cheapest studio willing to make their soulless nostalgia bait. Pokemon's main profit comes from merch and that's all they need to sell it.
I know GameFreak is no victim, but I'm defending them because I don't want them to go away. They speak like they honestly love what they do, and I just don't want gamers to kill that.
Edit: ILCA isn't a bad studio, and Niantic...well that's a different can of worms. Also, I'm not talking about side ventures like Pokemon New Snap. There's no reason to rush that because the franchise doesn't depend on it. My point is, no matter what company they hire to make the games the franchise depends on, The Pokemon Company will rush them for their merchandise schedule.
Edited to remove the assertion that The Pokemon Company held back ILCA's vision for BDSP. As commenters pointed out, the source did not substantiate this claim.

Pokemon "national dexes" are just the pokemon that naturally live in the region (even if they've been introduced from other regions/are invasive). Pokemon not in the dex can still be brought to other regions as partner Pokemon or as part of a team, they don't take your Pokemon away. You just can't catch them in the wild and Pokemon that aren't in the national dex are disqualified from official gym challenges and other events. Though a lot of gym leaders are cool with having a battle with non-regional pokemon for fun, you can't earn a badge with them.

Can we agree that Mythical event Pokémon suck? That there is content programmed into the game we bought that we can only access if we played it in a specific time and place AND were able to get to the right location to download it? That some of the coolest designs, featured in the movies, are both region-locked AND time-locked? That sometimes they just don’t release the Pokémon’s event at all?
Well, it’s still a pain in the ass to get them, but between Let’s Go, SwSh, BDSP, P:LA, and the 3DS version of Crystal, you can finally get every mythical mon from the first four Gens (except Deoxys, which is in the ORAS post game). So naturally, in my quest to Catch ‘Em All, I had to go for it. Problem is, I never got Let’s Go, SwSH, or BDSP. Thank god my library had them all.
So I finally had my hands on Mew, Jirachi, Shaymin, Darkrai, Manaphy, Phione, and Arceus. I couldn’t stop there, though. Not when Crystal was sitting unplayed on my 3DS. Thus, despite being in the middle of a Brilliant Diamond hardcore Nuzlocke (I couldn’t not do one while I had the game), I embarked on a side quest through Johto. That is its own story.

The National Pokedex is numbered the way it is based on when various Pokemon were "registered" by the different regions and accepted by the Board. It's more or less arbitrary. Kanto got to be first because the Board was founded in Kanto, Professor Oak was THE top researcher in the world at the time and he hails from Kanto, other bureaucratic/political reasons...
Each region internally has to decide which Pokemon they want to claim as theirs, and then submit their selection for registration as a set. Every region is doing this at the same time, however, so there's a lot of "first come first served" logic going on. So whenever one region has pushed their group through and been officially registered, the other regions have to revise their own selections, resubmit paperwork, etc.
Pokemon are not necessarily listed with their evolutionary line in order/near each other because some stages are considered as belonging to one region over the others.
The Mime Jr > Mr. Mime > Mr. Rime evolutionary line is a great example of this. All of these Pokemon have been present in the Kanto, Sinnoh, and Galar regions for about the same amount of time. However, each one is considered to be specifically part of one region over the others for many reasons.
Going chronologically in the National Dex order, Kanto pretty much only cared to register their Mr. Mime form that is more commonly seen throughout the region. Because they knew their choices would be registered first, and since they already had a large set of Pokemon, they decided to let other regions scrabble over the other Pokemon in Mr. Mime's evolutionary line. This decision mostly affected Galar, but we'll get to that in a bit.
Next up is Sinnoh's claim to Mime Jr.! They were able to more quickly register Mime Jr. because of the region's love of cute baby Pokemon. Most of the other regions didn't even bother trying to claim most of the baby forms precisely because of how strongly they tied in to Sinnoh culture.
Finally we get to Galar and its struggles in registering their Mr. Mime variant and Mr. Rime!
So, as previously stated, Kanto had a large part in forming the National Dex. One thing they did was make it hard to register different variants of the same Pokemon, especially if they were regional variants of Kanto's claimed Pokemon.
Essentially, once Kanto decided that a Pokemon species was officially registered, it could not be registered again. Makes sense right? Except that Kanto applied this rule to regional variants.
Regional forms were stuck in this weird space where everyone knew they existed, but they weren't officially recognized. Registration applications including regional forms were often denied on the grounds that they were invalid because that particular species was already registered with Kanto :))
So Galar had a lot of difficulty getting their own Mr. Mime through. Even if it was drastically different in appearance, was even a whole different typing, AND had its own evolution.
If anything, the existence of Mr. Rime was used as evidence against Galar's Mr. Mime. "You can register Mr. Rime because it's a completely *new* species, sure! No you cannot say it evolves from Mr. Mime because we don't have any Mr. Rime in Kanto, the Official Home of Mr. Mime. No you cannot register your weird Mr. Mime, we've already got The official Kanto one and he does not look like that. No you can't register it with incomplete data, it clearly comes from that unstandard Mr. Mime, which we will not register because it's Wrong."
Eventually people became more in favor of recognizing regional variants and Galar was finally able to submit its set of Pokemon including their own regional forms and region-specific evolutions.
And that's why Mr. Mime is "from" Kanto with a regional variant in Galar, comes from Mime Jr. which is "from" Sinnoh, and conditionally evolves into Mr. Rime which is "from" Galar, even though they're all the same evolutionary line!

National Dex Week 1
38/1008
I’m going to post updates to this weekly. I’ve begun my playthrough of sword and got past Kabu. This game has been really slow and a bit of a grind but that’s probably because I picked sobble for my starter and have had to find ways to counter the first two gyms.
I also messed around a little on the isle of armor which got me my first single evolution pokemon Comfey. I got my beloved Klefki shortly after. My first (and so far only) evolution line to be completed was the Thievul line. Although I have a couple middle evolutions (Drizzile Corvisquire and Dottler).
For anyone curious my team is currently:
Thievul (lv. 21)
Galarian Meowth (lv. 19)
Corvisquire (lv. 20)
Chewtle (lv. 18)
Galarian Stunfisk (lv. 25)
Drizzile (lv. 31)
I definitely need to grind a bit. I hear the next route (route 6) is where you can find Dhelmise that’s probably going to be challenging to find but I’m determined to get it.
The plan is to beat the story and catch as many pokemon on the way that I can, then do dlc and catch any pokemon on the way through those. And hunt/evolve to get the rest of the Galarian dex.
