You can't just drop that dead body story in some tags, what happened there?

just another person forgotten by the state of california. this was when i lived in burbank; i walked to work every day close to downtown and used a route that took me past where some of the local unhoused population would spend the day (beside the abandoned k-mart, for anyone familiar). a lot of them would rob liquor from the grocery store across the street and then drink it there on the sidewalk until they passed out. never harassed me, i would exchange a friendly nod with the more sober guys and just walk around the unconscious ones.

one of them was really, really bad off. incoherent, hostile to the others there, always a vodka in hand. on my walk to work one day in the middle of summer, 100f heat (yes, i walked the mile to work in 100f heat sobs), i saw him lying face down on the sidewalk in the blazing sun with an empty 750 of vodka next to him. all of the others had presumably sheltered somewhere cooler. i knew right away this was bad; the sidewalk was blazing hot and it was midday so it had been hours since the shade had shifted away from where he was.

so as the tags described, i approached and nudged/spoke to him with some trepidation, and there was nothing. he didn't feel "stiff" but he also didn't feel... right, if that makes sense. i called 911 and told the location, and was basically thanked and told I could continue my walk to work if I couldn't wait at the scene, which I did, because this is hell world and i worked a shift job.

it was only later that day i processed it better, and it only really sunk in when i never saw him around again. RIP dude, I hope you found peace.
