actually the sexiest scene in breaking bad is that part of end times where jesse has walt on the ground with a gun to his head and walt grabs his hands and presses the muzzle to his forehead knowing full well betting that jesse won't be able to kill him....... i'm not taking constructive criticism

i will never ever ever be over what better call saul did to breaking bad. recontextualisation of all time. look at that richly layered deeply tragic man who lost everyone whos ever cared about him. he is making your mom jokes

hello there!! I know I'm being a bit bold with this ask even if I'm hiding to an extent on anon but- I was wondering if you might be interested in watching/sharing this video essay I recently finished on a trans reading of Jesse Pinkman
https://youtu.be/sVh0of5kAQ4
feel free to ignore me and either way I hope you have a good day!
I'm a few minutes into this video (it's close to the forty-minute mark), but so far, I appreciate her insight! Obligatory warning for spoilers about Breaking Bad and a little for Better Call Saul.
I think so many people are attracted to the idea of trans Jesse because Breaking Bad cannot be separated from the analysis of masculinity and toxic masculinity specifically. In these discussions, I think trans people often have unique insights into their experiences with toxic masculinity, and though that isn't always true, I myself certainly know that I and many trans people have a complex relationship with masculinity (and femininity, but I digress).
I think I most related to the idea of a trans reading of Jesse in the scene where Jane observes that not only did Jesse draw himself as superheros, but his kangaroo superhero had a pouch. It was relatable, and almost this sort of realization that Jesse presents himself a certain way, yet other people interpret him differently than he does.
I highly doubt Vince Gilligan intended Jesse to be trans. I highly doubt that Aaron Paul played Jesse in a way that was meant to be read as trans. However, I do still appreciate the trans reading of Jesse, and I think that if it were canon, it would fit neatly into the overall themes of the show (that being masculinity, gender, gender roles, and how people contend with these elements)

the gender, race, etc of characters absolutely makes a political statement. i mean like. do i think the writers of White Men Killing Each Other Show sat down and made a bunch of white men kill each other with a mission to specifically say that toxic masculinity leads to futile death and pursuit of material desires? no. do i think the writers of Rich People Being Assholes were like "fuck yeah we just wrote the next communist manifesto"? no.
but there is the fact that stories like these are simply not imagined for most other types of people, at least not to the extent that they are for white men or rich people etc. they could have only been imagined and become popular with [privileged identity] at the center, and that in itself is political. that in itself was a choice the writers made, a choice that was likely informed by whatever marketability the writers/studio perceived for the characters.
does that mean the story could only be told about or by white men? no. but it would be a fundamentally different story written by someone else because we live in a context where race informs everything we do. does that mean only certain types of identities can speak to a specific but universal aspect of humanity in their writing? no. but casting and themes are not apolitical or interchangeable just because the subject matter isn't "CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT" or "SUFFRAGETTES" or something. and it's kind of ludicrous to act like they are

captivity literally causes brain damage. like obviously there are huge mental and psychological consequences to EVERYTHING horrible that jesse experiences on the show, his captivity especially, but its fucking insane to think about how deeply cognitively and physically fucked up jesse would most definitely be after escaping and making it to alaska. to excise this from his aftermath narrative feels wrong. its not more torture porn or whatever, its a realistic consequence of his captivity and i really like to explore it in the broader context of jesse’s overall recovery and adjustment to being given a literal second chance at life. give him a therapist (like please), give him a substance use recovery network, and give him a neurologist. give him people in his life who understand that he has memory loss and migraines and trouble with abstractions, and think no less of him because of it. his body’s going to keep the score but if we’re going to center his aftermath narrative around recovery and rebuilding, let his body be a part of that.

Hating on Skyler White in 2024 is incredibly embarrassing in any situation but the worst is fanfic authors who add in random disclaimers in the notes of their fic about how much they hate Skyler. Like they write a genuine meaningful fic about how manipulative and abusive Walter is but then the end note will say "i still hate Skyler but when Walter did x abusive thing that was really fucked up 🤓☝️" like do yall hear yourselves????

Love that Saul knows what Jesse and Walt reminds him of, but he’s desperate for that kind of love again anyway.
