DC Comics Celebrates The 90s This November

DC Comics is all about the 90s. The company will celebrate the decade with the return of WildC.A.T.s, a Waller vs. WildStorm mini-series, a WildStorm 30th Anniversary Special, Batman / Spawn: The Classic Collection, and 90s themed variant covers in November.

WildC.A.T.s are getting a new on-going series from writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Stephen Segovia, which will spin out from Batman: Urban Legends. The HALO Corporation gathers a crew under the leadership of Cole “Grifter” Cash that will have to work together in the shadows to make the world a better place...no matter who they gotta kill. Too bad they are about to cross paths with The Court of Owls.

WildC.A.T.s #1 features a cover by Stephen Segovia, variant covers by Jim Lee, Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, and Ben Oliver, 1:25 connecting variant cover by Jeff Spokes, 1:50 variant cover by Alan Quah, 1:100 variant cover by Dan Hipp, 1:150 pencil variant by Jim Lee, and a ‘90s Cover Month variant by Brett Booth and Sandra Hope. The comic goes on sale on November 8, 2022.

Waller vs. WildStorm is a four-issue mini-series for DC’s Black Label from writers Spencer Ackerman and Evan Narcisse and artist Eric Battle. During the ‘80s Cold War intelligence agency Checkmate is pulled in two directions. On one side is the public face of the agency Jackson King, aka The Armored Battalion, former leader of Stormwatch. One the other side is Adeline Kane, whom King suspects is engineering horrors. Unknown to King, Kane also has a new ally, young Amanda Waller, who has her own ideas as to how metahumans can serve their country without worrying about all that pesky honor, dignity, and long lives.

Waller vs. WildStorm #1 (of 4) features a main cover by Jorge Fornés, a variant cover by Eric Battle, and a 1:25 variant cover by Mike Perkins. The comic goes on sale on November 15, 2022.

WildStorm 30th Anniversary Special #1 is a 100 page special issue that pays homage to Jim Lee’s WildStorm Productions. The special will reprint, in periodical form, short stories from WildStorm: A Celebration of 25 Years hardcover as well as now stories featuring WildStorm characters in the DC line, charting their future in the DCU. The special hails from creators Jim Lee, Matthew Rosenberg, Joshua WIlliamson, Brandon Choi, J. Scott Campbell, Brett Booth, Ed Brisson, Bryan Hitch, and more.

WildStorm 30th Anniversary Special #1 features a main cover by Jim Lee, variant covers by Sozomaika, Bryan Hitch, Joshua Middleton, J. Scott Campbell, and Lee Bermejo, a 1:25 Glow in the Dark cover by Jeff Spokes, and a 1:50 Foil variant by Sozomaika. The special goes on sale on November 29, 2022.

DC is reprinting Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, and Klaus Janson’s Batman / Spawn: War Devil #1 and Frank Miller and Todd McFarlane’s Spawn / Batman into a single collection titled Batman / Spawn: The Classic Collection.

Batman / Spawn: The Classic Collection goes on sale on November 15, 2022. In progress cover artwork above by Greg Capullo and Todd McFarlane. In related news, a new Batman / Spawn by McFarlane and Capullo releases on December 16, 2022.

Throughout November DC Comics will release over 15 ‘90s themed variant cover of many of its comics.

"I Think I Wanna Marry You" - Part 4

"Can you believe I'm getting married?!!" I exclaimed, I was getting more excited by the minute.

Yeah, I had invited Brandon. Kind of by accident. I had sent a mass text invite to everyone in my contact list on my phone.

"I'm happy for you, Evie. Really." Brandon told me. He seemed to mean it to. I was surprised he came. But I wasn't going to kick him out. He had flown all the way there. Maybe, in a way. It'd be good for him to be there. I wasn't going to think too much on it.

Because, finally. It was time. Pak was at the altar already and I walked down the aisle towards him.

"You look breathtaking." He whispered to me, grinning.

That was the reaction I was going for. Mission accomplished. I smiled back at him.

The pastor began to read the poem I had selected for us in place of the traditional vows.

"From this day forward, You shall not walk alone. My heart will be your shelter, And my arms will be your home

These I can promise"

"I cannot promise you a life of sunshine; I cannot promise riches, wealth, or gold; I cannot promise you an easy pathway That leads away from change or growing old."

"But I can promise all my heart’s devotion; A smile to chase away your tears of sorrow; A love that’s ever true and ever growing; A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow. Yes, I’ll Marry You."

After the pastor pronounced us husband and wife, Pak and I shared our first kiss as a married couple. My heart felt like it could burst. Years ago, if you had told me I'd be married someday. I would have laughed in your face. Life has a way of surprising us. I had never been happier in my life -so far.

"We did it." I whispered to Pak, smiling.

"We did it." He said nodding, before kissing me again.

"I love you so much." I told him, holding him to me tightly.

"I love you more than there's drops in the ocean." Pak told me before laughing "That sounded really cheesy."

"No, it sounded wonderful." I told him, before pulling away.

Cake was calling my name. I made Pak and I our own special wedding cake, everyone else got a store bought one. I didn't hear anyone complaining about it. My wedding, I can do whatever I want.

"So, where are we going on our honeymoon?" I asked Pak. He hadn't told me. It was a surprise.

"You'll find out when we get there." He told me. He didn't look like he was going to budge either.

We went to have our first dance as husband and wife, on a dance floor made of sand.

I tried my best to get him to. Tried all that tricks I knew, that would be allowed in public that is, but still nothing. Guess I'd find out when we got there, like he said.

Have you ever had an old push lawnmower in a shed that has sat around for a year or two? Will it run again? Will it fire right up, or will you have to really work at it? Will it be more than you’re able to figure out on your own?

That’s where I am with music. I’m always writing music. That’s not the problem. The problem is the time it takes to finish songs, make them better, and record them. But all of that is the fun part. That’s not the lawnmower.

The lawnmower is communicating to you and getting music to you. Is anyone out there? Does anyone actually care about a new Cool Hand Luke song or album? And even if they do, will I know how to reach them?

Well, it’s time to lay aside the fear and insecurity and just start cranking, so to speak. I have more to say about fear and anxiety in regards to creating art, but that will have to wait for now.

Here are a few things of note:

This year marked the 20th anniversary of Wake Up, O Sleeper. I’ve been trying to figure out ways to honor that. Brandon, Jason, and I have talked about it. I think I will do some sort of podcast to tell stories about the songs, the recording, and the general CHL happenings around that time.

This year also marks the tenth anniversary of a side project I had with my friend Robbie Williamson. That side project was called Polyvalent. We released a couple of singles and an album called WANT. If you haven’t heard it, I think it’s worth a listen. I'm still proud of it. It’s got a bit more of rock swagger than CHL, but it’s still moody ole me. It was recorded and mixed by my good friend Steven Tracy, who you may remember as one of the guitarists in The Myriad.

This year I’m also going to release some new Cool Hand Luke stuff. I have several songs that are completely finished, and I hope to finish some more. In the meantime, I’ll release a single here and there. I just filmed a music video for a new song called If You Keep. I’m happy with how it turned out, and I look forward to sharing it with you.

Social media is a bit daunting to me. I’m a father, a husband, a full-time pastor, and a part-time mental health counselor. My time is mostly spoken for, and if I want to put energy into Cool Hand Luke, it’s usually not the promotion side of things. But, it’s time to get that lawnmower out, and see if I can get it running. If you’ve read this far, I am deeply grateful for your support. Whether you are interested in new CHL music or old, I hope that it is a blessing to you. It is a blessing to be able to share it with you. Talk to you soon.

how should a person microblog?

It's the most wonderful time of the year — a time to, if you have arrived to your doctor's appointment in Soho early for some reason, buy a buttered roll from a street cart and try to have a Breakfast At Tiffany's moment at some random boutique that did a holiday disco ball display. Buttered street cart rolls are so good. It's a shame they're not a dollar anymore. Brandon's America has pushed them up to $1.50. Ok grandma, let's get you to bed.

I have a feeling that the combination of Trump announcing his re-candidacy and a bunch of young people getting upset at Ticketmaster for spoiling their Taylor Swift Eras Tour plans is going to break something crucial on Twitter that Elon Musk nuked in a fit of pique, and then where am I supposed to go?? I have been gathering mutuals' emails via Substack, and I've been blogging here. There's just something special about the zone I have been trying to build on Twitter, where even though I *know* very few of the people who interact with me, it's pretty easy to figure out who is a kindred spirit that's down to clown, and who gets muted immediately for bad vibes.

I had a reel ("Reel") I recently put on Instagram of Marianne Williamson talking about how secularism isn't helping the left — sort of a pithy Marianne-ist snippet that I thought was neat when I saw it in person. It got picked up by IG's algorithm and got a lot of random eyeballs, and within 24 hours there were two people with private accounts squabbling in the comments and harshing my goddamn mellow. At its loosest privacy settings, IG lets you freely be an asshole without having to show your own breadcrumb trail of past assholery—you can't see someone's past comments, and if they're on private, you can't see anything they have posted at all. Total contextless asshole existence. Whereas on Twitter, if someone pops in my mentions just to be a jerk to try to get my attention, I can visit their profile, look at their replies, and see if, for example, they've been one-sided-arguing with vaguely Chapo Trap House associated people for weeks, and then I can move them to trash (and if I am feeling generous, pray for them, lol).

Twitter is just the perfect place to get stoned, tweet a stray idiotic thought, and start a conversation with a few people with whom you've developed weird internet rapports. I've been putting thoughts on the internet since I had a Blogspot in 2003 and Twitter's the first place that felt like anyone else was paying attention to me, and I am not afraid to admit that I like attention!!! I hope I will find my people elsewhere when Twitter eats shit.

Orgulho e Paixão Episode 1 recap

I watched this in Portuguese (I do not speak Portuguese) and the Portuguese subtitles (which stopped showing after half the episode) so take this with a grain of salt. ALSO, spoilers ahead.

We have all 5 sisters but Kitty is going to be some sort of Marianne from Sense and Sensibility (indeed she is called Mariane). There is already a Colonel Brandon figure admiring her from a distance.

While Mary (Cecilia) is spying on this random guy's house where strange happenings that remind me of Jane Eyre are going on. So perhaps we'll have a Jane Eyre/Mr Rochester as well or I've completely forgotten some important Austen plot.

Darcy is English (I think?) because his full name is Darcy Williamson. Bingley is called Camilo and they move near the Bennets to build a railway to move the coffee that is produced there to... like... somewhere else. This Caroline and Mrs Hurst are called Susanna and Julieta and seem to have a different surname from Camilo/Bingley so I'm not sure how they are all related but alright.

We also have Ema, who is Emma Woodhouse. She and Elisabeta are great friends. There is also a Mr Knightley but I'm not sure about him yet.

And now what we were all waiting for: Darcy and Elizabeth!

Let's start with the swoon-worthy Darcy saying "I don't think I've found my soulmate yet" and then they show Elizabeth on an overlay. Excuse me, is this poetic cinema?

From what I understood, Elizabeth is the eldest in this one. She is not interested in marriage but wants to travel the world. "With what money?" Emma asks at some point. I wasn't able to understand Liz's answer but I think they'll go the usual route of "the heroine becomes a sudden and unexpected bestseller author bla bla bla" sigh.

It's quite different from what happens in the novel. Basically, they are both shopping for some kind of fabric (?) and they both grab the same one at the same time so they start arguing about who should buy it. They end up falling on their asses after playing tug of war. Darcy says "oh I'm so sorry! I shouldn't have insisted since you are a woman" and Elizabeth is like "you jerk, you should have given up because I'm right, not because I'm a woman!"

And then they both relate the incident to Camilo/Bingley and Jane/Jennie and Camilo/Bingley looks at Darcy with a pointed gaze and Darcy is like "Yeah she was beautiful, leave me alone" which is so cute. I wasn't able to understand Liz's reaction :(

The episode ends with a bang. Liz shows up at the Meryton Assembly (a ball hosted by Emma cause even in this version she has big money) wearing a white tie dress suit. Mrs Bennet faints and Darcy grabs her, while whispering "musa de loje" which I think means "muse of [loje]" but I don't think I transcribed loje correctly because it apparently doesn't exist in Portuguese. So if anyone could tell me what it means I'd be forever in your debt.

In any case, HE IS WHIPPED.
