adaptations that are a deliberate alternate telling of a story arent all that crazy to me (and also sometimes its as simple as someone like o'malley saying "the books already exist") ive been quite fascinated by this concept for a long time but alas i do not have many examples of this off the top of my head. but i do love picking apart adaptations and differences as a general thing. hoho !

#going back i really liked the roxie episode it was my favorite. that was the peak to me i loved what they were going for #i think what was being done there was excellent on its own And as a departure from the comics #anyway one of the only other examples i can think of off the top of my head is when i got little witch academia manga #a million years ago and theres a note in the beginning like ''hey! the anime already exists so i thought to go a different route so it isnt #boring'' and That is why they play volleyball yes this was an anime to manga adaptation #moomins is something with a lot of adaptations. the 90s show on its own has a lot of funny (?) things #like toft being turned into the lighthouse keepers son #i know. So... I'm Lester John Andes a grade 11 STEM Student and currently studying in St. Paul University of the Philippines. • Where do i see myself 10 years from now on?

well i see myself as a Successful Med-Tech, Engineer or Architect, rich guy that spoils my kids and my parents, living my dream life and being a good example of a Father, i also see myself in 10 years with a healthy relationship with my girl right now (blushes), i guess that's all.

• Was STEM the best choice after all?

Yes, i didn't regret it at all im enjoying studying in stem right now its more thrilling than i expected i love studying Biology and Earth Science, it was the best choice after all.

• What course will you take in college, why?

as of now i cant think about it but i guess im going to take Medicine because it's my dream tho, i wanna pursue medicine because i hate seeing sick people and i want to serve people and for my second option which is Engineering, i want to study engineering because i love math and i love solving problems equation. Now for the my last option which is Architecture, i wanna pursue architecture so that i can build my own house i guess i dont have any idea why im going to take this courses but i think its for my own benefit.

Chapter six

Suna was completely in shock and he was overwhelmed. He just froze. What can a man do when his ex tells him he is a father, let alone the father of two toddlers.

He immediately thought about the trauma you must have faced, being pregnant and alone. He also thought about how much he’s missed already, he wasn’t there for their day of birth, their first steps, first words, he’s already missed so many birthdays.

All he ever wanted was to be a father, especially to be the father of the children he made with the woman he was in love with. Was it truly a blessing or a curse?

Surely you don’t want to get back together and live like a perfect family behind a white picket fence. He’d have to learn how to push his feelings aside for these kids and share custody of them somehow. Before he could even speak you were walking away and he quickly turned.

Why aren’t his legs moving? What’s pulling him back? Is he afraid of this responsibility and commitment? Of course he is. He doesn’t want to be a shitty dad, will he be able to raise them correctly? How if he’s always busy training and practicing. All his free time is dedicated to napping.

His heart truly broke the second time ever when he saw those grayish eyes looking back at him with such hurt and betrayal. They screamed that they needed him. He didn’t know how but he felt it. He decided that he was going to take a step and work things out with you. Maybe not romantically but he really wants to be in his kids life.

“After all this time and trouble I went through. You’re gonna let her walk away again?” Atsumu’s annoying voice filled the silent hallway. “Fucking bastard.” Suna seethed and turned with a glare. Osamu knew his brother fucked up and decided to be cautious in case Suna decided to land a few punches on his brother like the last time Atsumu has pissed off Suna.

But as Atsumu braced himself for a comeback or for a fist to meet his face he was met with Suna’s back as he ran to catch up with you. When Suna turned the corner he saw the staff parking lot and he began to run even faster.

If you leave it’ll be too late.

When he made it in the parking lot he stopped and used his height to his advantage and he looked around. He couldn’t see you anywhere. “Y/N!” He called outloud and his voice echoed. “Y/N!” He repeated. He was about to continue walking through when a car backed up and quickly breaked so that they wouldn’t run over the man. You looked through your mirror and saw Suna standing there and looking around like an idiot.

Your heart clenched yet you felt butterflies at the same time. He came, not for you but for the kids. You really hoped and prayed that he would come, and he did. You parked your car and you got out. He sighed in relief and neared you. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I want to be in their lives I really do.” He exclaimed.

“It’s fine, Rin. I’m glad you want that.” You smiled softly.

For a moment he got lost in your eyes, and yours in his. It probably lasted less than a minute yet it felt like a eternity. Neither of you could turn away or say something else. It was comfortable and warm.

All of a sudden your phone rang and your finally blinked and turned away to answer your phone. “Did suna find you?” Jamie immediately asked. “Uh we were talking just now....” you said awkwardly and he stood awkwardly as well. “Ok good if not I was going to give him your number.” She sighed in relief and you rolled your eyes. “Alright I got to go, the kids have school in the morning.” You said and you both hung up.

“So I would love to stay and chat..ya know about the kids but they’re asleep already and they have school.” You mumbled. “No it’s fine I completely get it. School is important...are you available tomorrow? It’s off season for me so I don’t have any rough practices, only gym. I want to talk with you before meeting the kids.” He said and you nodded. “I’ll text you when to come over when I get home.” You told him and he nodded. You both exchanged numbers but Suna didn’t really seem that satisfied.

“Be safe. Text me when you guys get home safe.” He said and his eyes widened. “Okay, I will.” You smiled softly and he saw as you entered your car. You slowly pulled out and you drove away.

“Tsumu has her social media in case you’re curious.” Osamu spoke up causing Suna to jump. “What the hell dude, don’t just scare me like that.” He placed his hand over his chest and Osamu laughed.

“Come on, let’s go.” Osamu said and Suna nodded and walked away.

“Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck.” You muttered and slapped yourself as you drove. Your kids were already asleep so they couldn’t hear you having a mental breakdown on your way home. “Mommy you said a bad word.” Akira pointed out and you glanced at the mirror. “Sorry about that. Don’t repeat it okay?” You asked and she nodded. “I know I know.” She mumbled and look at her signed volleyball with a bored expression. “Is daddy going to be in our lives, now?” She asked and you sighed softly.

“Well we talked and it sounds like he wants to be there for you and nii-chan..he’s going to come over tomorrow while you’re at school so we can talk like adults. Then when you come home he’ll be there to hang out with you guys and you guys can get to know eachother.” You said hopefully.“I don’t like him. Why couldn’t Sakusa or Atsumu be our dad. Even that guy you were with earlier with the suit is fine. But dad is a jerk. He made you cry.” Rini huffed and your eyes widened, were they awake the whole time?

“Hey, I know you don’t know him but your shouldn’t disrespect your father like that. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have had you guys. You two are the best things that has ever happened to me. You’re a Suna, once you get to know your dad I know you’ll be proud that I put your last name as Suna not Kageyama.” You told him and he scowled.

“Can you tell us more about dad?” Akira asked and you nodded. “What do you wanna know?” You asked. “Why did you fall in love with him.” Rini immediately asked, “Well he was sweet and funny, he loved anime and we were in the same class. He also taught me how to love volleyball again after my grandpa died.” You said smoothly. “What position did he play? Did he go pro?” They asked. “He was a middle blocker and he was really good. He still is a middle blocker and yes he is pro.” You said and Rini gasped. He’s more of a middle blocker type of fan. And Akira prefers setters. Even when you or Tobio teach them volleyball. They choose those positions.

The whole drive they asked about him and you answered the best you could, you can’t tell them everything but they were satisfied and they had a better understanding. They did get upset with you for not telling Rin that he was a father since the beginning but they understood that he broke your heart and you didn’t really want to see him.

When you got home you texted Rin that you arrived. You quickly bathed your kids. Dressed them in their pajamas and read them a script from the new anime you’re going to be on. (They liked listening to the scripts rather than bedtime stories)

After reading three pages they were already knocked out and you gave them a kiss. You fixed Akira’s fox plush in her arms and made you way to Rini’s bed. He was hugging a green piggy with a crown from the angry birds game and the moon made his face glow. You stood there in shock and you imagined second year Rin sleeping like that with the pig plush with the crown that reminded him of you.

You quickly rubbed your eyes to see second year rin turn back into five year old Rini. “I need some wine.” You muttered and kissed his cheek and fixed his blanket. You took out the phone from your pocket as you made your way to the bathroom to take off your makeup and start your nightly routine.

You chuckled but quickly slapped your hand over your mouth. Why was it so easy to text Rin again after all this time. Isn’t it supposed to be awkward? Why are you so comfortable?

You quickly typed an awkward goodbye and he scratched his head confused but replied goodbye as well. He really wanted to continue talking to you more.

After you changed into your pajamas and finished your nighttime routine you made your way to the kitchen and you grabbed the half full wine bottle.

You held it to your chest as you made your way to your office/studio and began reading the script and answering some emails involving the character you’ll be portraying for the new anime. You celebrated a few weeks back when you got the offer and sighed thinking about this certain character.

You’ve read the manga already but it wouldn’t hurt to re read it to get a better feel of the characater right? You took a sip from the wine bottle as you found the first book of the manga. In your endless shelves of books.

“Alright Emma let’s go on an adventure.” You sighed and began to read The Promised Neverland.

Synopsis: Scenario of Ushiwaka

A lot of people wouldn't believe Ushijima had a girlfriend, it wasn't like you two were a secret relationship, you two didn't need to show off to anyone. You liked being away from other people's gazes, it was non of their business anyways. Ushijima is always busy with volleyball and you're busy in your club but somehow manage to have time for each other.

The nice thing is no one really talks about how you don't speak at all. A lot of classmates started to learn sign language to understand what you were saying, but you weren't deaf either so it made it easier for them and for Ushijima.

Even his team started to learn sign language to understand what you were saying, you were very important to Ushijima and they wanted to protect you too, but that doesn't mean you couldn't defend yourself but they just want to because you're like their little sister or older sister for the 1st and 2nd years.

It was weird how you met Ushijima, he couldn't sleep one night and went for run to tire himself out only bump into him. He apologized but you just bowed and ran off.

It kinda bothered him for a while, was he scary that you were too scared to talk? Not until he asked one of your male classmates about you only to find out you were mute. At first he didn't think much about it but that didn't stop him from searching for you and wanting to have a simple conversation.

He spoke and you wrote on a notebook that's how it went for months while studying together, he didn't want you to write so he studied sign language just for you, even though he's really dumb but Tendou helped out so did Semi well everyone did. The more he practiced with you made it easier, just seeing you smile made his day, he didn't realize he was head over heels for you. It didn't matter if you didn't speak or did, you understood him and comforted him like no one ever could.

That's how you two got together well with the help of Tendou of course because Ushijima didn't know how so it didn't help.

Of course Tendou will be apart of your relationship which you both didn’t mind, you loved him being around you so like basically he's your best friend. When Ushijima is out he would give you company by watching anime or reading mangas or even rant about people he doesn't like (cough cough Tsukishima), you would join some practices because why not, the boys won't be aggressive but one time Tendou 'accidentally' threw a ball at you so you served it in his face as revenge, which made Ushijima smile and make his whole team laugh as Tendou chased you around.

Of course Tendou gave you guys space, when Ushijima has a the day off from practice he would take you out or just cuddle while watching a movie, sometimes both of you take your little brother to a volleyball class because your brother admired your boyfriend and he's just 4 years old. That's how you met Oikawa, "Tsk what are you doing here?" He rolled his eyes seeing Ushijima, he didn't even notice that you and your brother were next to him. "I'm here with my girlfriend and her brother" your brother was confused "oh hey b/n" Oikawa's nephew greets your brother giving him a small head pat as your brother holds out his volleyball.

Little by little every player that played volleyball knew about you, somehow it got around even to Tokyo who played volleyball.

That's how interviews with Ushijima went, "so how many languages do you know?" "I don't speak any but I know sign language" "really?" "Yea my girlfriend is mute" he wouldn't sugar coat it, Ushijima and everyone loved the way you were, there’s nothing to hide.

No one ever dared to flirt with no one did, Ushijima was the only one to approach you even though you're are beautiful, no one ever approached you.

His rivals would always greet you with so much respect as Ushijima held you by his side and it amazes everyone seeing how quickly he understands you, even the team would too which makes them stand out way more than before. A lot of people would stare not because you can't speak because of how cute and pretty you were like no one could look away without smiling. Oikawa on the other hand he talked to you like any other person, he was nice but Ushijima limited it a bit since Oikawa is a smooth talker and Hinata the cutie that you practicality squished his cheeks, Hinata was nice and even funny to be around but of course and unfortunately Ushijima disliked him. There is always that one guy that doesn’t know anything or just came to a volleyball game with his friends, this guy practically grabbed you and started to flirt with you but you kept pushing him away, like he was scaring you, but he doesn’t let go “why don’t you say something sweetheart? Like let’s get out of here” he gets annoyed by you “aren’t you going to say anything?!?”

Of course Ushijima is your savior, “Get away from my girlfriend” poor guy trembled and ran off. “Did he hurt you?” ‘No But I’m shocked’

He pulls you to the gym with him instead and made one of the 1st years to bring the waterbottles in instead.

"are you tired?" 'no' nodding his head he pulls you into his embrace, "everyone couldn't stop staring at you kinda made me feel irritated" he confessed, you just snuggled deeper into his embrace, he could feel you smiling into his neck. He wasn't much off a talker but when you mention volleyball he would go all out but you didn’t mind at all, just hearing his voice soothed you. Falling asleep together, eating together and even studying together was his favorite moments with you.

When it was your first time with him, he was gentle of course, he would softly praise you, he was rough of course but sweet at the same time perfect combination in my opinion.

After care is always dress up and go get something to eat and just cuddle.

It doesn’t last long when it hits 5 he gets up and goes for a run leaving you under a pile of blankets to sleep in, Tendou bursts in to wake you up to talk to him because he’s bored.

“Guess what Semi semi did!” ‘What’ “he kicked me out of his bed like I’ve always been a good friend” he cried making you smile and giggle.

Every Friday the team would come over to eat ramen or your cooking and watch movies any kind of genre no in between.

After few years you’re still with him and he’s still in love with you, Yea their was guys that liked you and tried and yea girls try to get Ushijima’s number but nothing really mattered as long you two were together. 

Ushijima was now a professional volleyball player for the Schweiden Adlers, you were his fiancé about that time. His team wanted to get know you of course, Kageyama knew you couldn’t talk because he was close to Ushiwaka and has met you before, he made sure to tell the team not ask too many questions so it wouldn’t make you uncomfortable. Of course it didn’t bother you for them to ask questions, curious people need answers.

Once Ushiwaka brought you to a team meeting everyone went awe you were still gorgeous as ever. Romero told Ushijima you were gorgeous, he didn’t know if he should be proud or be jealous because Romero is now flirting with you and even learned some sign language like (I love you, hey cutie, are you still with Ushijima) it’s all jokes, you fangirled on the other hand.

Tendou was still present he would go to the apartment and stay for while when Ushijima is out of the country and even Semi and Reon comes to visit. They even took you to some of Ushijima’s far away games.

Then you two decided to have your wedding which was perfect everyone was invited even the press who were very quiet and very nice as they silently took picture and enjoyed the venue.

Then one day you felt dizzy and nauseous, you faced time Tendou to come over quickly which he did, you told him about the symptoms and you two rushed to the closest store to get a test.

Turns positive, so yes you’re pregnant.

You didn’t want to tell Ushijima yet because he was out of the country and that could stress him out. Tendou told everyone and made sure no one told Ushijima just yet.

Once he came back, you got everything prepared to tell him, “hey y/n” a light peck as he drops his duffel bag on the floor. ‘I have a gift for you’ “really?” He asks, you pull him onto the couch and bring out a gift bag. ‘Open it’ he takes out a tiny shirt that’s says Schweiden Alders number 11.

He looks up furrowing his eyebrows, ‘there is more’ nodding his head he finds a long thin box. Opening it, it was your pregnancy test that said positive.

He was dumb but not that dumb, his eyes widen realizing you were pregnant. “We are going to have a child?” You nod, he pulls you into hug and touches your stomach, he was so happy.

After hard 9 months, half of it he wasn’t there due to the Olympics but he was there when you went into labor.

So yes you have a child with your highschool sweetheart. A beautiful healthy baby.

He made everything perfect and made a life for you two, after your child turned 2 the media didn’t know about them yet. So during an interview he revealed that he had a child which shocked everyone. “So what is your wife doing now since you have been leaving a lot” “well she’s not alone since we have our baby to take care of and friends that help out” “you have a child?!” “Yes” shocked the media and everyone was like shook but you two wanted a quiet pregnancy and enjoyed it.

you squinted, looking at the character he chose

he just smiled in return so you started the game and went HAM

hinata would be hanging off the edge of the platform and you’d be waiting there to beat the absolute shit out of him

at some point he’s stop fighting and just run away because he knows he’s gonna lose

you end up feeling bad so you let him kill you once but while he’s attacking you he accidently runs off the platform and kills himself (you try your best not to laugh but your entire body was shaking and tears were forming in your eyes)

“was that your first time?”

“no actually i have this game at home! you’re very good!”

he begs to play again and you cannot say no... he’s baby your honor!

you press closer against his side to get a better view of the screen, which causes your bare arms to brush against each other

you kinda freeze a little because that was NOT intentional and you do be a little touch starved

to try and brush over your awkwardness you resume the game and keep your eyes trained on the screen

this kid literally freezes and whips his head towards you, his cheeks bright red. he starts apologizing PROFUSELY. for what?? you have no idea. so you pat his shoulder and assure him that whatever he’s apologizing for is ok

“don’t worry about it, it’s fine, your good!”

he looks relieved and manages to calm down a little (thankfully)

“oh, i forgot to ask! what’s you-”

“HINATA. WHAT ARE YOU DOING??”

 But my top picks for Danganronpa are Ibuki and Kaede!

 If you're the mom friend, Ibuki the exact opposite. She's very bold, loud and energized, you can never get bored around her. Yall would literally be laughing at absolutely nothing during the class trial over something she said. She'll totally makes songs about you. Even if you're sensitive, she wouldn't hurt a fly (on purpose, I suppose). The only thing that might clash is her being insensitive unknowingly, so you would just have to remind her if it really bothers you. You're the only person that can keep her on track tbh, she's always bouncing around. She's also super impatient and sarcastic, so there's no need to worry about that. 

 Kaede's super optimistic, kind, and straightforward so at first its a little off-putting and suspicious, but once you realize she only has good intentions, it started off well. She sorta gets alarmed when you pick at your nails purely because she has never done because (sorry for all the because's) she plays piano all the time. Anyway, she tries to stop you from picking at your skin. She's another person that makes songs about you. She's also stubborn and impatient, but it compliments your personality more than clashing with it. 

 My top pick for I Love Yoo is Min-Hyuk!

 He's known for being easy-going, bubbly and funny asf. Even when he was in America, ya'll would still have random 3 a.m calls laughing for no reason till yall got in trouble. Anyway, he deals with Shin-ae, who is known for being stubborn and impatient, so aren't a bother to him at all. It's cannon that Min-Hyuk eats a lot so ya'll go out to get food a lot. You have to stop him from doing dumb stuff, he's stupidly impulsive. I hc that he sucks at cooking, but he really tries. Just don't eat anything he cooks and you'll be fine.

Ok, lets talk the Winter 2021 anime season

Dear god, there are so many shows airing. A ton of sequels, and a decent amount of new shows. I think I’ll actually break down what I’m interested in watching into two parts, sequels and new. Lets get started. 

Watching:

Sequels 

Jujutsu Kaisen - This is technically a continuation rather than a sequel, but the spirit is the same. This was my choice for favorite anime of the season fall 2020 so this continuation has me pretty hyped. 

Black Clover - Still continuing. The manga had a 6 month time skip and the anime did some anime only stories with the author’s direction to cover that time period and now it’s caught up to that time skip. Shit is about to go down and I am stoked. 

Attack On Titan: Final Season - So this started airing in December which makes for a strange airing schedule, but it’s technically continuing from the fall season into the winter season. Anyway, it is fucking fantastic and this week’s episode left us on a major cliff-hanger for 2 weeks. 

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime S2P1 - Ok, so first... HOLY FUCK I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS SEASON, IT’S GOING TO BE AMAZING. Second, yes this is part 1. Thanks to covid there are some longer running seasons that are being split up to accommodate the production schedule. So this part 1 is airing in winter, then in the spring the 4-koma comedy re-telling is airing, and then in summer part 2 of this season 2 will air. it’s annoying, but 3 continuous season of slime is a welcome thing. 

Re:Zero S2P2 - Alright, so this is the second half of summer 2020′s season 2 part 1. I have high expectations considering what we’ve already been given. 

Dr. Stone: Stone Wars (S2) - HOLY FUCK I’M SO FUCKING EXCITED FOR THIS SHOW, I LOVED THE FIRST SEASON AND AM READING THE MANGA AND OMG I CANNOT WAIT FOR MORE.

The Promised Neverland S2 - More of the promised neverland. I’ve heard that this season will go even harder than the first season and Emma will prove even more why she’s best girl, so bring it on. 

The Quintessential Quintuplets S2 - A second season of a decent harem show? Bring it on. 

Log Horizon S3 - So I didn’t watch this when the first 2 seasons aired years ago, 6 I think actually. That said it’s always been on my PTW list and when I heard season 3 was going to air I decided that now was the time to catch up; and wow am I glad I did. I binged the first 2 seasons over the last 3 weeks and I am so fucking invested now. I cannot wait for this next season. 

Higurashi GOU - this is continuing from last season and I’ll keep watching it, though I’m still not quite sure how to evaluate it. 

Yuru Camp S2 - WOOHOO!!!!! This was the chillest of chill shows that aired winter 2018 and I absolutely loved it. I’m so excited for this next season for more camping and adorable girls being chill. 

World Trigger S2 - So I was under the impression that there were already 2 seasons of this show, I watched most of it I think but it’s been so long I don’t really remember much. But this is being called season 2... so either this is retconning the previous season 2 or that was really just 1 big season despite the notation on some websites. Also a S3 has already been announced so I need to hurry up and rewatch this before the new season airs. But with 73 episodes that might take a bit of time. 

Armor Shop for Ladies and Gentlemen S2 - This is a sequel to the short anime of the same name. If you like it, you like it. 

New

Cells at Work S2 - Ok, technically this is a sequel, but I’m including it here because of something cool that’s happening with the next title. 

Cells at Work: Black - Why yes, this is a different Cells at Work title. This is based on the spin-off manga of the same title that gender swaps the cells from the main series and covers their work inside an extremely unhealthy body. This is going to be a grittier, bloodier, and bleaker show than the main one and in a fun airing scheduling event, they will be airing back to back. I’m quite excited for the both of these. 

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS IS GETTING AN ADAPTATION! SADLY IT’S A SPLIT COUR SO THIS IS THE FIRST HALF OF SEASON 1 AND THE SECOND HALF WILL AIR LATER PROBABLY IN THE SUMMER. BUT THAT’S OK BECAUSE EVERYTHING I HAVE SEEN ABOUT THIS SO FAR TELLS ME THIS WILL BE A PRETTY DAMN FAITHFUL ADAPTATION AND IT IS GOING TO BE FANTASTIC. 

Horimiya - I’ve heard many good things about this romance show and am looking forward to it. 

Redo of Healer - Ok, here we go. This is going to be the outrage anime of the season. That is, if it is actually watched by people. It’s also getting 3 different levels of censoring so uh, I’ll have to check for the proper versions when it airs. 

So I’m a Spider, So What? - Ok, so funny story. I’d been hearing about this manga for a while so I decided to dive into it a few months back. As I read it, I thought it was pretty funny but I wondered if the anime adaptation would be great for a comedy manga about a reincarnated girl into a spider’s body. Then about 3 weeks ago, I realized I was reading the comedy spin-off instead of the main story. That said I’m still quite excited to see this adapted and I’ll get the manga after then anime is done. 

The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter - Hella ecchi, actually pretty fun manga. I’m looking forward to this adaptation. 

Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a started town - Hopefully this will be as fun as the manga was. Here’s a better synopsis than the Livechart one - Lloyd is the weakest person in his remote village but his dream is to become a soldier in the big city. So he moves to the city and strives to make his dream come true. However in a twist, it turns out that the remote village Lloyd came from is the retirement town for all the world’s strongest heroes and they are all massively overpowered, so when he gets to the city he’s stupidly OP but it doesn’t quite click for him. Shenanigans ensue. It’s fun and I’m looking forward to this adaptation. 

Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki - This is supposed to be not quite as good a romance as Horimiya this season, but still decent. If that is the comedy romance this is the drama romance show and hopefully it’ll be good. 

Kemono Jihen - Mystery, supernatural, Yokai. I’m intrigued in this show and hope it’s decent. 

Otherside Picnic - Shoujo Ai, Sci-Fi, I’m sold. 

Hortensia SAGA - This is based on a game, but I’ve heard that the story and scope are actually quite good and the PV actually looks quite good so I’m definitely gonna check this one out. 

SK8 the Infinity - Ok, so my first impression of this was nah, I’ll pass. But then I saw the PV and saw it was being animated by BONES and my impression changed to Ok I have to at least give it a couple episodes. 

2.43 Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team - So this is supposed to be Haikyuu except lots more drama and less gameplay. It will really have to pull me in in order to get me to not think boring Haikyuu when I watch it. I’ll give it a couple episodes. 

Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist- - Doctor heals people from Yokai or something like that. The tags look interesting as do the character designs. I’ll check it out.

Back Arrow - Fantasy setting but BOOM... Mecha! That premise at least demands a couple episodes of my attention. 

Heaven’s Design Team - Here’s my chill comedy SOL show of the season. The premise is Heaven has a design team that creates/created all the animals. I’m very excited to see the shenanigans. 

Gekidol - Idols and stage acting. After watching the new Love Live last season I’m in the mood for some idol stuff. But most interesting to me is the next show on this list. 

Alice in Deadly School - It’s not currently known whether this will be a full series or an OVA or some other thing, but this is an anime of the stage play that is being put on in Gekidol. The same VAs in Gekidol that play the characters in this play are voicing the characters for this anime production. And I just think this whole setup is neat and am very interested to see it play out (pun fully intended). 

Idoly Pride - This seems to be a more straight-forward idol show which I’m going to check out. 

Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san - Girl doesn’t quite cut it to do the thing she and her friend came to do, but she found that she can cook so uses her cooking for support her friends. SOL, lets go. 

Wave!! Surfing Yappe!! - Surfing show, the animation will make or break this show so we will see how it turns out. 

Wow, that is a lot of shows, lets add them up.

Tobio Kageyama MBTI [ISTP]

It was really funny to see people typing Kageyama as either ENTJ or ISTJ.

First, I feel like what people describing as Te, is Kageyama's Ti/Se working together. I disagree that he is extroverted, I feel like he uses a LOT of Ti, and I'll elaborate on this further down the post. And his Fe inferior is just so blatant.

Pretty much the entire conflict Kageyama faces in the beginning of the manga/anime arose from his difficulties in connecting and building rapport with others. It’s natural for everyone to want to win, but the very callous way in which Kageyama communicated this (“Jump higher!” “Faster!”) without considering his teammates’ feelings was indicative of immature inferior Fe. When he was fresh out of Kitaichi, and very new to Karasuno, Suga wondered why Kageyama didn’t look down at him for being less skilled and that's because of "Trust.. and stuff..". Kageyama is a naturally confident person but is insecure when it comes to anything to do with relationships between others. And after what he experienced in Kitaichi, he was finally able to understand how valuable being a trustworthy and understanding teammate is. 

An immature IxTP doesn’t see the value in that and like Kitaichi! Kageyama, would rather priorities (their idea of) efficiency at the expense of other people’s feelings (immature Ti, very underdeveloped Fe).

Inferior Fe also explains why Kageyama experiences so much difficulty connecting with others, it’s just something that doesn’t come naturally to him (contrast this to Suga, a Fe-dom, who’s in his element when connecting with the team, never ever failing at making them feel at ease). And Kageyama’s just.. so lucky that he ended up in Karasuno where everyone has been really good to him, very much trying to understand him and help him outgrow his negative behaviors. Despite his good progress, inferior Fe is still clear in his interactions with teammates; he’s blunt and to the point, as he values objectivity (Ti) over harmony in that he doesn’t tread softly around anything, and says what he thinks straightforwardly. Another thing, Kageyama is so used to getting compliments on his skill and talent, which he is something he works hard on and is very confident in, but when he gets complimented on his own character/person… lol if you remember his face when Hinata told him "Awesome! You're an awesome guy!" he's just completely stupefied lmao.

Now for his dominant functions, Kageyama primarily makes use of Ti in conjunction with Se. Kageyama is very in tune with his senses and a great deal of his thoughts are drawn from the outside world around him, he thinks about the here-and-now, definitely not dwelling on theories, intuitions, or abstract ideas and what-if’s. His Ti is revealed in his unique and individual way of thinking, something not everyone can understand and also the way he’s so passionate about volleyball? He’s always striving to improve and better himself as a player by constantly studying and analyzing and evaluating everything around him. For example, Kenma managed to earn Kageyama’s interest with his way of playing. As someone who is naturally inclined to learn and further widen their understanding (dom Ti) of volleyball, and by extension play better, his first instinct is to investigate, ask, inquire. He doesn’t notice his behavior is making Kenma uncomfortable though (weak Fe). Just, the affinity he has for the setter position is also pretty telling of dominant Ti. Kageyama is not usually talkative but when Hinata dismissed setters as boring back when they first met, he really went off lol, like I think that's the longest time he's ever spoken, or one of. Underneath that seemingly cool facade, there is a fierce passion. Dominant Ti users often dive very deeply into their interests. The setter position itself is a position that requires the player to have a lot of smarts in order to play it well. Kageyama is all about thinking up and orchestrating the plan of attack, being the “control tower of offence”, analyzing the opponents and finding their weak points, and then finally getting past their defense. He’s all about outsmarting the opponent and overcoming challenges by his own wit (very dominant Ti) which is why he loves being it so much. 

Here's an example of Kageyama's use of Ti+Se:

Kageyama notices how different the sand feels "It's insanely hard to move on sand!" (Se) and his mind straight away starts thinking about the implications that this new phenomenon may bring "If I trained here, wouldn't my strength increase? Sand!! Oh, man!!" (Ti). Notice that he never really vocalizes these thoughts of his.

Just… ISTJ doesn’t work because Kageyama doesn’t express inferior Ne at all, or display any dominant Si? Sure, what happened at Kitaichi really left a mark on him, but instead of it being an experience he looks upon to define the present reality in front of him, I feel like it was more of a wake up call for him to start paying attention to his weaknesses and want for his immature Fe to grow. I can't see any Fi in Kageyama either. But yes, I'm leaning away from any Si types for Kageyama because I don't think that having a past experience that deeply effects a person is indicative of dominant Si. What leads Kageyama through his life is his own personal logical framework, and his own analytical mind.

Some additional points about ISTPs that really describe Kageyama:

“[Ti] types typically do not take constructive criticism and disagreement personally. They often welcome tough, unrelenting critique as an aid to achieving the highest levels of accuracy and objectivity.”

“Others often see them as distant, unfeeling, disinterested in people, and arrogant.”

“ISTPs tend to have an interest in systems and the relationships and frameworks that make them fit together the way they do. They will pour extraordinary amounts of time into the study of these systems, but rarely through book study, never without hands-on experience…”

“Dealing with incompetence also serves as a major trigger [for emotional outbursts].”

(This is a relatively long post, so here’s what it is: It’s a love letter to Haikyuu!!, the TL;DR is literally: I love Haikyuu!!)

I love this story a whole lot. I never expected to love it as much as I do now. It’s tied for my favorite all-time anime with my two other favorites (there is no picking the ultimate because these three stories and genres are too different to find a definite one that outdoes the other; all three fill certain needs I have in an anime).

But this one was... unexpected. You see, my other two favorite anime are One Piece and Sailor Moon, both anime that have been with me since the 90s, anime that I grew up with.

Haikyuu!! is different, because I got into it during season 1. Back in 2014. It’s... It’s a baby anime - in that it is still so young, compared to the other two. The same can be said about the genres; both magical girl and adventure/fantasy were basically the two types of anime I’ve been enjoying since the 90s.

2014 was the year I first got into the sports anime genre. In fact, Haikyuu!! was the second ever sports anime I watched (my first being Kuroko no Basuke). I never really took that genre seriously or cared to even check it out, because well... sports. Sports aren’t my thing, so what could possibly be the appeal of watching an anime about them...? But a friend of mine was very deep into KnB and after one convention where she cosplayed Kuroko, I figured I’d give it a shot and I really ended up loving it. And yes, I admit, the main thing that made me pick HQ!! next was Hinata’s hair; the bright orange really jumped out at me when helplessly browsing for a successor.

I watched the whole thing - well, there wasn’t much of it at the time, only the first season - and I literally immediately watched the whole thing again. I started my rewatch the same day that I finished my first watch. I’ve never done that before.

And after I finished the first rewatch, I started reading the manga. I don’t... do that. I do own two shelves filled with manga, so yes I read them, some of them are in fact corresponding to anime I enjoy, but usually when I watch an anime I don’t feel the need to also read the manga. (I don’t like reading much.)

In this case, I just needed to know. I needed to know how it continued, I needed more. The only anime that ever happened with is One Piece. And, much like with One Piece, I am horribly bad at actually keeping up. After a couple of weeks of being caught up and waiting for weekly releases, I drop the manga again so it can... gather more chapters for me to read. And usually I forget about picking it up again, tbh.

I rewatched the first season once more when the second season hit. And rewatched both seasons before the third, shortly after the second season had ended. And, after the third one ended, another obligatory rewatch of it all.

We’re in 2016 now, at which point I was pretty deep into sports anime and had started watching multiple ones with multiple sports and was so busy discovering new news that, admittedly, in the following years there was no rewatch. I was falling down rabbit hole after rabbit hole of new anime and the appeal of the shiny new beat out watching something for what would be the sixth time.

Only when 2020 hit with that fourth season did it happen again. At first, I only really wanted to watch that last episode of season 3, because well the release had hit me a bit out of left field and actually I’m kind of busy and there are so many things I’m already watching and supposed to do I can’t possibly watch 75 episodes of something I already know by heart. But mh, that final episode, how can I leave it at that? At the very least that final match, right? That third season. It’s only 10 episodes. I’ll just... skim through it, skip around it and watch the highlights - and oops, I forgot to skip anything. Well, now that only made me want more. I could maybe just--

Yeah, I watched the whole 75 episodes in a week. Which, admittedly doesn’t sound like much considering they’re only 20 minute episodes, I mean come on that’s ony 25 hours of TV. However it’s subtitles so it’s something that requires my whole entire attention and that’s not how I consume other media; I always write while watching TV. Anime is special, because no dubs for me. So it requires more time, in a way. And I usally only carve out time for maybe an episode or two a day when I watch an anime. With HQ!! it was that I accidentally kind of binged season 3 in a day like I didn’t mean to watch 10 episodes in a row but how do you stop? And it continued much the same (logically, if you look at 75 episodes over 7 days. That’s literally just math).

I had finished the rewatch and was left with the weekly wait and it is slowly killing me. My fingers are itching to just rewatch the whole thing again but I now have this girlfriend and like she’s super adorable and also loves anime and she made this whole list of recommendations so I’m kinda working through that and come on you can’t just watch one thing on a loop that’s ridiculous.

So I picked up the manga again, two weeks ago. I had left it off and bookmarked it on chapter 161. I’m currently on 311. That’s... 150 chapters in two weeks. That’s a lot for me.

That’s all a very long way of trying to express just how much I love Haikyuu!!, because I just... genuinely can’t stop? I’m so thoroughly enjoying this whole thing that I just wanna consume it again as soon as I’m done because it’s so good.

I love the character, I adore the characters. Hinata Shouyou is in my top five favorite male characters of all time. I love him so much. But not just him. Not even just his team, aka the main characters? This one just completely makes me love even the other teams - yes, naturally the main rivals the most because that is by design, but usually sports anime fall short on making me invest in anyone beyond the actual main team, it is very rare that the main rivals get some baseline investment from me. Usually I’m just in it for the main characters, why should I care about those... stepping stones? The teams they defeat on the way.

Haikyuu!! has me squeal and point stupidly when my big dumb owl shows his face (Bokuto ily). It has me excited for them all. Invested to a certain degree (naturally, I don’t want the other teams to win when fighting Karasuno, because duh).

I even love the female characters in it! I very rarely can even stand female anime characters because like... 90s American stereotype female characters be cringey but anime stereotype female characters are the bane of my existence. Here, I love them, I find them wholesome. They’re not being exploited like in certain other male-centric franchises where they need the biggest tits possible and the thinnest waists imaginable and only exist for the male gaze and for the male characters to be perverts about them.

Hinata isn’t some super gifted chosen one but he has to work hard, really hard. They all do. And they all get their growth and just the pure excitement whenever they do learn something new, whenever they do improve? Not to mention his character design, that short ball of sunshine and fluff. His hair kills me. Seriously, that orange fluffiness. He’s so smol but so energetic and so bright in that contageous anime protagonist way - meaning that he just makes everyone around him like him and cheer for him and smile with him (well, not everyone *side-eyes Tsukki*).

Tsukishima has such a great arch. He starts out as such a stereotypical bully who is just put into the way of the protagonist to create some tension, but then he actually gets fleshed out fully, gets his own arch and growth and I genuinely never expected to care about the damn bastard??

The humor in this one also kills me. So much dry-witted sarcasm and snark, so much of the humor lays in the facial expressions of the characters too! It’s a joy to watch and to read.

The pacing just works. There are some sports anime that rush too much through games and some that drag them out too long - but in boring ways. This anime turned one volleyball game into a 10 episode season and manages to convey so much tension and excitement that even after I had already seen it twice and absolutely knew the outcome, I still couldn’t even pause and had to watch the whole thing because I needed to see how it continues.

They manage to convey all this excitement and also the joy - the joy of the characters whenever a play works out - and the surprise when something new happens in ways that have me excited all over again, even when I really shouldn’t be because I already know exactly what happens.

And then there’s the animal theme. I love a good animal theme. The fact that basically all the teams have an animal associated with them. There are such great visuals given with the animal themes too.

Naturally, there is also always the component of shipping for me. Such great ships that I love so dearly and... honestly, nothing has ever made me ship an OT6 before because I’m over here, juggling all these overlapping ships and loving and cherishing them all.

I don’t know, on the greater scale of things and the vast, endless landscape of anime, this may just be one of many, but to me personally...? It is... It’s like this one was just perfectly tailored to me, specifically, in a manner I experience very rarely. TV shows are always about compromises. Sure, I like plotlines A and C and D but man do I hate B and yeah I love the main character but urgh X member of the main cast I just loathe and then there’s the unnecessarily forced canon romance that’s making me cringe - these kind of things.

With Haikyuu!! I just... enjoy everything. Every aspect of it. Every character of it. Every interaction between characters. The writing, the art-style, the animation, the pacing, the characters, the plotline, the execusion. I just love the whole damn thing.

I’m finally done re-reading the Nekoma vs Karasuno chapter for the fourth time, and I’m now ready to give my opinion about the whole match. You know me, I am 100% honest. If you’re someone who gete immediately offended - because there are some of you who get personally offended over someone else’s opinion on a manga/anime l o l - don’t read this. This won’t be an analysis, but more of a long rant lol

I’ll start with, I’ve never really been that fond of Nekoma as a team - I love Kuroo and Yaku, I like Kenma, I loathe Lev. But Furudate has managed once again to make me appreciate them, even if just a tiny bit. 

The first set of their match was annoying and boring, to say the least. Yes, Nekoma was set to be Karasuno’s rival from the very start. Yes, Nekoma’s the opposite of Karasuno, they’re literally defense vs offense. Still, after watching Karasuno win against powerful teams such as Shiratorizawa and Inarizaki, it irked me seeing Nekoma, a team who lost against Furukodani and struggled to get to this point, completely block and receive every single attack from Karasuno. Yes, it’s true that Karasuno never once won against Nekoma before in their practice matches. Add to that the fact that matches are always unpredictable, and we’re talking about teenagers here, not professional players - still, after all the aforementioned events that led to this cats vs crows game, the endless “Nekoma has saved the ball once again”, in the first set especially, plot-wise, was unfitting. Nekoma was over powered. I saw different people comment that this was not what they were expecting, that this was the most boring thing that they’d ever read in Haikyuu, that this crushed all of their expectations, and I agreed.

Now that I can read and I had read the whole match, though, I can say that I don’t dislike it. It will never become my favorite no matter how many times I come back to it, and no matter how beautiful some panels/moments were, but I’m okay with it. I think if I have to compare my enjoyment for this match to some of the previous matches, I’d pick the one vs Seijou where Karasuno lost. 

I said it before and I will say it again: this was more a Nekoma match. This was told more by Nekoma’s perspective, in particular Kenma’s. This was the story of how Nekoma lost against their long rival Karasuno. This was the story of how Kenma lost against Hinata. 

People keep saying, “chapter 314 is where Kenma loses against Hinata” - yes, on scores. Kenma had started chasing after Hinata when Hinata proved to him by executing that jump that he can’t be trapped in Kenma’s little schemes. Kenma was losing the moment Hinata went against that block and Kenma thought he had read what his next move would be, but Hinata pushed the ball and Kenma was not able to save it. Kenma lost the moment he said, “this is fun”, admitting that volleyball’s finally fun. And that - that was beautiful. It actually almost made me tear. It brought me back to Kageyama grinning to himself. To Tsukishima raising his hand victoriously after blocking Ushijima. (I think you’ve understood by now why I said that this reminded me of the first Seijou vs Karasuno match. Kenma in this match was like Hinata in that match. Gave everything he got. Gave 300% more than he normally could. But still, he lost). I have a lot to say about the whole KenHina dynamic, but I will keep that for myself and maybe share it later lol

Also, I’m not changing my mind: this was the best ending Furudate could give to this match. Why? Well, because one) seeing Karasuno win with a Hinata/Kageyama combo was getting old (I mean, I will never get bored by it, but it is repetitive), and b) it was realistic, unexpected, and totally fitting. After this rally in which everyone kept the ball in play - everyone touched it - it was just so fitting that the ball dropped because of sweat, and not because one team made a superior play for this last point. No, the ball slipped through Kenma’s fingers because of the sweat. In this last point, the two teams were equal, the crowd’s wowed by them, no one’s giving up, every single one of them touched the ball and the ball fell because of the sweat. I was speechless. Furudate is a genius. That was brilliant. It made me gasp. Hands down one of the best, if not the best, end of a match.

+ Nekoma literally starts every match with their, “ We are the body's blood–flow smoothly and circulate oxygen so the brain functions normally ” and this chapter ends with an overly exhausted Kenma - I just love the symbolism behind it. Kenma is the brain of Nekoma, and him having the ball slip through his fingers means that it’s over.

if you want: slice-of-life / realistic portrayal of wlw relationships with no fanservice 

We obviously know why I’m here. If something contains wlw, expect me to appear there sooner or later.

Aoi Hana is a pretty special series. Among all the shoujo ai series whose main draw is the fanservice and the fetishization of girl on girl action, Aoi Hana contains none of that. It’s a quite realistic take on the “genre”.

The way I’d describe this anime would be to say that it’s about “Fumi’s first love”. Our main cast consists of Fumi, a very timid and gentle girl who moves back to her hometown where she meets Akira (Aa-chan) with whom she used to be friends with as kids. Despite the expected premise, Aoi Hana isn’t a love story between these two. Fumi meets a girl called Sugimoto on her first day in her new school. They eventually start dating. The series is basically about Fumi’s personal growth throughout this relationship with multiple characters and their interjecting love interests keeping things even more interesting. I’d also like to mention that while wlw relationships are the focal point of the anime, Fumi is the only lesbian in the bunch. Two other main characters are bisexuals and we aren’t really given anything to figure out Aa-chan’s.

With the complicated relationship “drama” you’d expect Aoi Hana to be pretty spicy but it’s a slice-of-life through and through. The story advances at a very slow pace and focuses quite a bit on side-characters’ relationships, friendships and just general school life.

The technical side perfectly mirrors the anime’s pacing and general atmoshpere. The OST contains a lot of piano and various musical instruments and the OP/ED are both slow and soothing. The animation is very smooth and the art direction is quite interesting with the backgrounds only being drawn as if they were just sketched. The character designs are simple but distinct.

However, there’s a reason I said that this is about “Fumi’s FIRST love” as this is just a small piece of the actual story. The manga was unfinished at the time of this production and thus they decided to leave the ending SOMEWHAT open-ended. Not in a bad way as most of the story threads have been wrapped up but they left room for a potential sequel which I’d love to see so bad!”

Sidenote: compared to my review my score may seem low and that is because I may have appreciated how the series was handled, I’m really not a sucker for SOL and the pacing was way too slow for me personally. [7/10] (x)

if you want: boobs and asses tbh / okay-ish beach volleyball matches

Harukana Recieve is a sports anime mixed with some slice-of-life. Which sport? Beach volleyball. And as I found out from watching this, that is apparently very different from normal volleyball.

The story starts out with Haruka, who moves in with her cousin Kanata. Now living near the ocean, Haruka obviously takes a trip down to check it out where she meets 2 girls playing beach volleyball. Later it turns out that Kanata has certain connections to the pair. This is the start of how Haruka gets her first taste of the sport which later leads to her pairing up with Kanata. A bit later we meet another pair, the Thomas twins, who get the other 2 to join the beach volleyball club at school.

Honestly, Harukana Recieve was quite boring to me. The slice-of-life between the matches felt really slow. They did give some character bulding moments to our characters, however this being a sports anime I think the same could’ve been achieved during or after some exciting matches. And while the anime tries to give some depth to our cast, for quite some time I could only think of them as the tropes they represent...cause of the fanservice.

I looked at a few pages of the manga and was surprised to see that the characters don’t look like they came out of a hentai which means that making their boobs 3 times the size of what they were in the manga was a conscious choice. The creators most likely thought that the story couldn’t carry the anime and instead they filled the empty spots with a lot of eyecandy. Boob jiggles, close up shots of their asses and of course weirdly small swimsuits, everything a salivating virgin would want and more!

Shortly about beach volleyball from what the anime told me: a team consists of 2 people. A pair can only touch the ball 3 times while it’s in their court before needing to send it over the net. This part was initially what I thought made the matches quite boring to watch as it really doesn’t offer much variety. The tactics were the exact same for a long while. Recieve the ball, second person goes up to the net and passes up the ball to be hit over, first person jumps up and hits ball over. Repeat. However, I took a look at some actual real life beach volleyball matches and I realized the problem. The camera work. In real life, the passing of the ball is incredibly fast paced. You barely have time to think, the ball is just flying all over the place. In the anime however, they often pan on the ball while it’s in the air or even slow down the camera after a hit, making the matches feel much more sluggish than they actually would be. This is made worse by the fact that they barely use any wider shots, mostly just close ups from a lot of weird angles, making it hard to discern how big the court actually is and following the ball’s trajectory is almost impossible, as sometimes the ball looks like it got launched into the stratosphere and then we pan to literally a few meters from the person who hit it.

Obviously, the lack of tactics used in the matches could be attributed to the fact that Haruka is new and she is slowly progressing. Which is realistic, but doesn’t make it any less boring. 

The final 3 episodes more or less consist of one match, which is the most exciting part of the whole thing. It still has the problems I pointed out above but as the 2 pairs are both more or less experienced, the fooling around is finally over and replaced by some actual tactical playing. It helps that the match also carries much more emotional weight than the ones before.

Well this ended up being hella long...if you just wanna look at boobs and asses go ahead tbh. If you want the beach volleyball part just watch the last 3 episodes. If you’re not interestested in either, then... [5/10] (x)

if you want: beautiful presentation and nature scenes / some insight into diving /  iyashikei (healing slice-of-life anime) / peculiar charm

Amanchu! is a special case for me. I see it mentioned a lot that one of the most exciting points of the anime is that it’s made by the creator of Aria, which I’ve obviously heard of but haven’t seen yet. And while this would work great towards me not comparing it to a prior work of the mangaka, I still made a mistake by having preconceptions about what this anime would be like. 

My vague memory of the plot was that it was going to be about a diving club. Great! Basically another sports anime, which I’m fine with. However that wasn’t quite the case.

In the beginning, we’re introduced to Futaba (Teko) who moves into a new town, away from her dear friends. She is very shy and timid. Then at her new school she happens to meet a peculiar girl named Hikari (Pikari) who quickly befirends her and makes her join the diving club with her. The overarching plot of the anime is Teko’s change from a shy little girl into a much more mature young woman thtough Pikari, the diving club and the sport itself. 

That is, in the first half of the anime and then the last episode. However, there’s a pretty big chunk of Amanchu! where the diving barely gets mentioned in favour of some slice-of-life and character building episodes, some of which focus on the side characters; the other 2 members of the diving club, a twin sister and brother and the club manager who’s their teacher. Unfortunately, most of these episodes fell flat for me as they really aren’t...very interesting characters!

While my lack of enjoyment in most of Amanchu! could be chalked up to me being a bit sick of slice-of-life stuff thus making it hard to get invested in what was happening, there’s something else that can be a huge turn off for people which is the “comedy”. Whenever something that demands a reaction happens the characters’ heads turn into a circle and their faces kinda turn into an emoji (for examples look up ‘Amanchu faces’). All of them have a specific “emoji face”. This looks cute of course but the anime uses it SO OFTEN you sometimes feel like you see their normal faces less than their emoji faces. Characters also have certain “ticks” like Pikari constantly saying “upyo!”, Teko making this high pitched “eeeeeehhh??” and the twin sister kicking her brother in the back at basically every occasion. The “funny sibling abuse” trope I hate anyway but your opinion of these things I just listed could make or break the series. It could either annoy you to hell and back making it basically unbearable to watch or you can find it incredibly charming and entertaining. 

If you’re on of those many people who find it charming then Amanchu! will be a great iyashikei (healing anime) for you. The presentation is absolutely gorgeous with soft linework and a vivid but inintrusive colour palette. The background music consists of some very nice instrumental tracks. Of course, the anme shines especially during the diving and underwater moments while the slice-of-life episodes bring up some less serious but everyday questions. The enjoyment of small moments is a big part of Amanchu!.

This anime wasn’t really for me but I’m still giving it a quite weak 7 as I don’t think it deserves to be listed with some of my 6 rated anime that are objectively much worse. [7/10] (x)

gons arm

ok this is preparation for when u finish or not claire and i can finally release the full extent of my stupidity upon u. one of my favorite things about caa is how it recontextualizes the entire show up to that point. up until gons explosion in caa, most of hxh is played straight as a shounen and doesnt engage in a particularly pointed way with its genre. beyond maybe like. kurapikas revenge quest being much more focused on the tragedy and self destructiveness of his revenge quest than maybe would be expected of a shounen. but caa takes the typical shonen protag traits in gon that it previously praised him for and turns them into tragic flaws. and the build up is SO PLANNED!!! LIKE the very fact that gons signature recklessness, confidence, and desire to be responsible for the well being of those he cares about is tied in nearly every arc to the motif of losing his arm i think shows that this was the endgame for gon, that part of the story of hxh is that of caution and critique of the very shounen typical traits of “bravery” . ok so like

hunter exam: gon breaks his arm while fighting hanzo. he is rewarded for his disregard for his own personal safety, with other characters admiring him for it and it winning him the battle and his hunter licenseship. during the killua rescue, gon is again rewarded for his determination and feelings of responsibility for killuas safety, which wins him the respect of the zoldyck butlers and inspires killua to leave his family. 

heavens arena: i almost forgot heavens arena LMAO its such a minor arc but. gon does break his arm again while ~testing his limits~ and it is followed by the first hint of rebuke from the story via wing! but its quickly glossed over and used to further emphasize gon’s uniqueness. i see this as just more buildup until the fall in caa

yorknew: i dont remember if gon breaks his arm in this arc actually LOL but it solidifies gon and killuas dynamic of gon being reckless and vengeful on the behalf of his friends and killua bailing gon out from the consequences of his actions. theres a really revealing piece of dialogue also, when theyre captured by nobunaga and killua outlines a plan where he sacrifices himself for gon to survive, to which gon tells him that gon is the only one allowed to talk about sacrificing himself for his friends, not killua. (AND WHAT HAPPENS IN CAA. LOL) 

greed island: in the fight against genthru, gon’s recklessness starts to tip over into portrayed as a NEGATIVE trait. still not completely, as it does get spun as indicative of his determination to push himself and he suffers no lasting consequences for it, but the tone of the fight is markedly different from that in hunter exam. in the hunter exam, his defiance in a needlessly life threatening situation is almost unequivocally portrayed as positive, despite other characters noting that it is extreme and worrisome. the genthru fight is marked by darker music, imagery, and a more serious appraisal from genthru as dangerously reckless. gon suffers much more severely for his disregard for personal safety too, losing an entire hand and severe injuries to many of his other extremities, vs the more temporary loss of a broken arm. his reaction is severe, and he only recovers through the miraculous use of the game card. other ppl have said this, but greed island was boring as hell LMAO but did a good job setting the scene for caa. its the beginning of the slope downwards for gon, and killua’s penchant for putting gon on a pedestal and understanding self sacrifice (see: fucking up his hands in the volleyball game) as a way to measure his closeness to gon is elaborated on in greater detail. 

caa: it all comes to head ! god there’s a really good flowchart of key quotes from the manga and the anime that someone put together for gons thought process during caa, but it all boils down to: gon’s need to be responsible for his friends’ well being means he feels wholly responsible for kite’s death. gon has a penchant for self destruction in the pursuit of what he desires (self improvement, finding ging, protecting his friends). when discussing why meruem might have caused intense damage to himself (RIPPING OFF HIS ARM......I HAVE MORE THOUGHTS ON THE MERUEM GON PARALLELS BUT THATS FOR LATER), gon admits that he would inflict great amounts of damage to himself if he were unable to forgive himself for something. and thats the gon pitou fight. revenge, but also repentance. gons dialogue during the fight (apologizing to kite, telling kite that he finished the job like kite taught him to, telling kite theyre almost even now when gon loses his arm) makes it very clear that gon is lashing out in betrayal, yes, but also in an effort to redeem himself for being unable to save kite. gon loses his arm fully and nearly loses his life, if killua hadnt been there to save him. i have som thoughts on what caa says about maturity and how that fits in with empathy, connection to others, and power, but ill. ill post that separately lol.
