🧭MAP MONDAY🧭 I started reading Ninth House yesterday in hopes of finishing for a Tuesday discussion. So I’m reading along, and I’m at page 50. But opposite page 50 is page 19. Not good! 😫 Turns out there’s a whole section missing. And I am not willing to just skip it. Fortunately I remembered that I also owned Ninth House on Kindle. Crisis averted! I have also ordered fancy special editions of Ninth House and Hell Bent. Now instead of gifting my original copy, I can use it for some crafty book project. ❓Are you crafty? Books with Maps, Part 1: The Casquette Girls by Alys Arden Maps have always fascinated me. As a child, I spent hours poring over atlases and maps, learning names of new places and imagining their landscapes and forests, climate and fauna, peoples and cultures. I would always feel that extra jolt of excitement as I opened a book of fantasy fiction and found a map of the world I was about to enter. This series is going to be an appreciation of all those maps in books, with my occasional thoughts on maps as instruments and ideas, and their cultural role as visual aids. My first map for the series is this delightful layout of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana from Alys Arden’s The Casquette Girls series. Why I absolutely love this map is because not only does it provide a great visual aid for navigating the locations and landmarks of where the novel is set, but it is also a great cultural rendition of the French Quarter. I see this happening in two ways. On the one hand, there are the more obvious physical markers - the landmarks, if you will - that are recognisable to locals and tourists alike, like the Ursuline Convent, the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, and so on. On the other hand, it also conveys meaning through the simple but effective delineation of the French Quarter as bounded by Rampart Street, Decatur Street, Canal Street and the Esplanade. Maps are often, among other things, boundary-making devices, not only geographically but also culturally. The French Quarter has its own unique identity within New Orleans, and as a historic district, the boundaries of the French Quarter are important for both civic and cultural reasons, which this map further iterates. Q: Do you like drawings in books? I usually don't, but when they're part of the story or depict something the author wants to make clear how it is, then I gladly accept them. But if maps count as drawings then I love them! I know for sure that if I ever write a book it'll have a map. They're so cool and really helpful to the reader. - P: ¿Os gustan los dibujos en los libros? A mi normalmente no, pero cuando son parte de la historia o muestran algo que el/la escritor/a quiere que sepamos cómo es esa cosa, entonces los acepto de buen grado. Happy Monday #bookstagrammers ! May your coffee or tea be strong and your day short! . It's day 18 of #bookishlyseptember17 -- #mapmonday -- Map/Glossary -- honestly I like both. Glossaries have extra info which I always like but maps always make me feel more involved in the book I'm reading. .
