New Horror 2022 - Day 15
Tumblr media
(Art from this incredible anthology by Richard Wells.)
"The Summer People" by Shirley Jackson (1950) "I wonder if we’re supposed to… do anything."
This really got me. I’ve had aging and choosing a place to settle (if ever) on my mind recently and this just hits all the right points for me to feel creeped out about the future.

"Don't Go to the Island" by Sfé R. Monster & Kalyna Riis-Phillips (2016) "The skulls at your feet are laughing at you."
It’s been almost all white American men in my horror comics this month, so I’m pivoting to other creators and eras. Fortunately, the Bones of the Coast anthology has that and also focuses on the Pacific Northwest, undoubtedly my favorite region. It’s a good pairing with the Jackson story. A moody coastal vibe, the gray sky threatening something that doesn’t reveal itself immediately, but instead lingers behind trees and corners, watching and waiting.

Under the Shadow dir. Babak Anvari (2016) "Dead people can't dream."
This was great, in that it captures an intimate story of two people trapped by the weight of political erosion and violence very well. It’s a slow simmer movie, building up slowly and then explicitly, asking if anyone can ever really escape the horror they’ve experienced.

Even though my cat was basically born on Space Center property launches hadn’t popped off again by the time we moved so she’s experienced way more earthquakes than launches
Cue me now trying to explain to her we are NOT having an earthquake while the whole house rattles and she tries desperately to understand why I’m not freaking out 😭

If BTTF was set today. Would Marty be the basic white boy we all know?
I live asking everyone out of pocket questions who rebloged :)
The short answer is yes, probably
The long answer is that, when looking at the 80s movie, Marty is somewhat of a basic kid, he’s following the trends of the time period, he uses slang, dresses accordingly, etc. And honestly, I think that’s apart of the appeal of the character. He’s just like you and me, a kid who belongs in his time period with his own little world and his own little problems that all of a sudden gets put into a completely different world where he very much does not belong. It emphasizes why he is so lost, how much he doesn’t belong, and why he is so eager to leave. But also, people can relate to him! Because he’s so in touch with the culture of his time period, kids in the 80s could relate to him and imagine themselves in his shoes! So if it was remade today, with Marty as a 2020s teen, he’d probably be the same level of basic as 80s Marty to preserve that idea and vision.
As always, thanks for the ask! These are so fun to answer, always feel free to send em in!

Also my big takeaway so far from perusing east coast housing/host options is that overall rent in most cities is a little cheaper than california but low end housing is WAY scarcer.
Like for example you can get a nicer place in Boston than you can in LA for the same price, but there's significantly more budget options in LA than in Boston. In LA if you can't afford the minimum going rate of like $2.3k for a studio (the no kitchen, sofa bed situation) then you can still get a room in a shared house in a sketchy part of town for like $1200. Boston seems to have nicer stuff in that low 2000s tier but absolutely nothing beneath it unless you go pretty far outside of town. Like they literally do not seem to have shitty enough options for me to afford, it's all just decent studios and above. In New Orleans I found a little shed situation that I could afford but so far I've found nothing like that in Boston.

//thinking of Bonely’s Bistro in the Last City and genuinely wondering how the citizens would react to a guy basically trying to bring back 1930’s swing and jazz while also guardian-proofing his place so he can give actual pre-traveler dance lessons to guardians and citizens.
