I just thought you'd be amused to hear that I've periodically been imagining Herchel as a Yamper and Charlie as a Boltund and they both fit v well
NGL, were it not for this whole Pandemic chicanery I would 100% be dressing them up as those and going to conventions.

RO's Pokémon Teams (Expanded)
Reverse ask. I will now infodump about what each pokémon teams the ROs would have. I know you answered it similarly before, but I want to do this in-depth. For additional flavor I gave everyone a pokémon that evolves by trade, which would happen in game as them trading it with MC, and a route specific pokémon.
R:
Their starter is a shiny Meowth/Persian, since it can use its payday move to generate free money, plus it was a pokémon heavily associated with the main crime organization in the anime (Team Rocket and Giovanni). R’s luck manifested by giving them a shiny, shame it is one of the worst shinies available…
Next up: Super Luck Absol, a pokémon that can sense natural disasters and tries to warn others, and is seen as a doom-bringer as a result. Reclamation R uses it to intimidate their opponents, joking that they are *both* doom-bringers. Rebellion R is much more critical of the rumors and laments their inability to stop the disasters.
Third is Murkrow. Its signature ability is Super Luck, BUT R’s would have Prankster (an ability it loses upon evolving). Prankster!Murkrow works well as a setter in competitive, which means it sets up buffs and debuffs. Reclamation R teaches it Perish Song.
Fourth is Togekiss with Serene Grace. R has been raising it since it was an egg and is very happy to abuse its ability to make their opponents flinch (essentially lose a turn).
Number five is the trade pokémon. R has a Feebas, an ugly little fish that evolves into the regal Milotic. They hardly use it and regret being unable to find anyone they trust enough to trade it back. They eventually trade it with MC as “something to remember them by” and claim Milotic looks better on MC’s team anyway.
Sixth and final pokémon on their team is route specific, although both are rock types due to R’s interest in rocks. Rebellion R gets Sableye, a pokémon that lives a quiet life in caves and eats crystals, the rumors about Sableye stealing souls would synergize well with R being framed for a crime they didn’t commit. Reclamation R would get Glimmora, a pretty flower made out of crystals… of course, said crystals are made out of poison, but R would never use them for evil, how could you even think otherwise?
E:
For a starter, E got Pawmot. Electric/Fighting pika-clone that evolves from Pawmo after walking 1000 steps alongside its trainer. This one is the most spoiled little thing.
Following that, E has a Fidough, their beloved puppy that helps them with cooking. It evolves into Dachsbun after E gets more confidence. Also, it has the Well-Baked Body ability (P hates it. Dachsbun is resistant or immune to almost everything on their team).
Third one is a Bewear, a big and fluffy friend that is ridiculously strong, to the point of accidentally killing its friends with bone-shattering hugs. Fitting with E’s power.
Fourth in line is Hitmonlee. Fighting type with a focus on legs. Fast boy. E goes on runs with it.
Their trade pokémon is a Swirlix. A cutie-patootie fairy goofball of a pokémon that they eventually trade with MC so that it can evolve and grow stronger. E keeps whatever pokémon MC trades them as a reminder to be strong.
Finally, their route specific puppies. Good Influence E gets a Boltund, a good doggie that can run for three days straight, easily break 50 mhp at top speed, and zap its enemies with electricity. Bad Influence E gets a Houndoom, a bad doggo that can give someone eternal, burning pain and chooses its leader via combat.
V:
Their starter is an Inteleon with the Sniper ability, they have been together since before V was made a soldier. To quote the dex entry: “Its nictitating membranes let it pick out foes’ weak points so it can precisely blast them with water that shoots from its fingertips at Mach 3.” This pokémon has finger guns, V has a real gun, they are perfect.
Second is a well-trained Rockruff puppy that evolves differently depending on what route V is on. Civilian V gets midday Lycanroc, an extremely loyal pup with a calm demeanor, representing V healing from the trauma and learning how to form bonds. Soldier V gets midnight Lycanroc, who will happily sustain injuries for the sake of taking down its opponent, V’s just a soldier and their life belongs to their commander, why should their pokémon be any different?
Hatterene takes number three. This pokémon’s evolutionary line HATES strong emotions, so no wonder one of them would like having a trainer as emotionless as V.
Frosmoth is next for two reasons. First, I wanted V to have an ice type since they grew up in a cold region. Second, Frosmoth is a friendship evolution and it signalizes that V is not fully emotionless.
Their trade pokémon is none other than Pumpkaboo. Its dex entry mentions that Pumpkaboo are said to be the product of areas where lost souls lingered, so odds are V has seen their fair share of Pumpkaboo and had plenty of opportunities to catch one. This trade happens fairly late in V’s path and comes with V realizing that Pumpkaboo wants to be with MC, signaling that V is becoming more aware of other people’s emotions.
Lastly, V’s route specific pokémon are either a therapy dog or the brutal pokémon. Stoutland, a dog that can keep someone warm overnight in the wintry mountains, is taken in by Civilian V, being a friendly pokémon known for rescuing people, it seems fitting that Civilian V would end up with one for support. Soldier V catches Hydreigon, a pseudo-legendary with destruction as its main goal, the perfect weapon for a soldier.
L:
Espeon is their starter. Little L was given an Eevee to keep them company, Little L got attached, and now L can be seen with an Espeon curled up on their lap while they read.
Second one is Luvdisc, because it is heart-shaped and L is a romantic.
Third down is Xatu, a pokémon that can see both the past and future. Fitting with L’s power. Also, bird!
Pidove is on their team and nobody can convince me otherwise. L, nerd that they are, struggling to dumb down their words so that their cutesy widdle pigeon buddy can understand. Pidove is friendly and sincere, and evolves into the intelligent and proud Unfezant. L wants to evolve it, but this process takes way longer than it should thanks to Pidove being their weakest pokémon and hardly seeing any combat until later in the story.
Kadabra is their trade pokémon. They spent a long time planning how they’d ask a possible future friend to trade with them so that their Kadabra could finally evolve. They end up shyly asking MC if they’d be up for a trade so that “they’d never be fully apart” due to having each other’s pokémon.
Time for their route exclusive pokémon, both psychic. Peace L gets Gardevoir, a pokémon that can see the future and is ready to summon a black whole to protect its trainer, everyone is lucky L keeps it under control. Resolve L gets Metagross, a pokémon with four brains and smart enough to rival a supercomputer, everyone better pray L doesn’t Mega Evolve it since its dex entries state, “Mega Evolution stimulated its brain. It emerged as a ruthless Pokémon that will clutch at any means of ensuring its victories.” and “When it knows it can’t win, it digs the claws on its legs into its opponent and starts the countdown to a big explosion.” Yikes.
Raven:
Their starter, Banette, is a doll that became a pokémon over its grudge of being thrown away. Sounds familiar? Raven found it roaming at night during their first week on the streets and the two have been together since.
Next up, Trubbish/Garbodor, a friend that Raven made years ago when they frequented the same dumpsters. Yes, it is sentient, poisonous garbage. Yes, Raven will cuddle it.
Bisharp takes third for being very sharp and stabby. Insanity Raven goes through the work of evolving it into Kingambit. Therapy Raven keeps it a Bisharp.
Number four is Doublade. Why have one stabby sword when they can have two? Insanity Raven keeps Doublade that way, happy to watch the twin blades slash foes to ribbons. Therapy Raven evolves it into Aegislash, deciding that more defense is worth slightly less stabbing.
Their trade pokémon is Haunter. Raven raised it fully planning on trading with MC. This pokémon is almost as clingy towards MC as Raven. Keeping up with both of them is an exercise in patience.
And finally their route specific pokémon. Insanity Raven gets Spiritomb, 108 spirits trapped into a stone as punishment for their misdeeds, with Raven often making cryptic comments about “making” a new Spiritomb. Therapy Raven, for their part, gets a Maushold to remind them of their goal to have their own family with MC.
S:
S’s starter is Sandaconda. Ground types are common in the desert and its Sand Spit ability turns out to be way more viable when their opponents aren’t used to dealing with sandstorms.
Revavroom is a must for S. A motor pokémon that canonically gets used to power up vehicles? S has built a dozen starmobiles for their Revavroom.
Cyclizar looks like a bike, of course S would have one. It is their main ride when Sandrider is not available. S makes it wear Safety Goggles to protect it from sandstorms.
Their fourth pokémon is Vanillite, because ice cream jokes. S only got it after coming to the academy, which is why it is not evolved and low level. It grows into a Vanilluxe eventually.
For their trade pokémon, S has a Rhydon. They did not originally plan to trade it, nor where they interested in evolving it further. MC is the one to suggest a trade and S ends up deciding that Rhydon is the one they should trade away.
Now, both of their path exclusive pokémon are pseudo-legendaries, because S deserves it. Speed Devil S goes for Garchomp, a land shark capable of going at speeds equal to a jet fighter plane, the perfect Ground-type for a speed devil. Troublemaker S, for their part, gets Tyranitar, an insolent mobile disaster and their best partner in crime after MC.
P:
P’s starter is obviously Blaziken. Fire/Fighting, solid ability in Speed Boost, and an overall solid starter choice. P has trained it since it was a Torchic, maxing out its speed and attack stats.
P gets Ninetales to match with their twin. P caught it as a Vulpix and was very quick to evolve it via Fire Stone.
To represent P’s interest in cooking, they get Garganacl, the rock salt pokémon. Its Purifying Salt ability makes it immune to status conditions, while its signature move, Salt Cure, helps ensure its opponent will not last long on the battlefield. P doesn’t use it much, not being used to its typing, so Garganacl often comes as a surprise to their opponents.
Annihilape takes fourth. A pokémon that got so angry that it died and came back angrier. P and their Annihilape act so similar, it is funny. Rage buddies refuse to chill until they kill one (1) shitty dad.
Their trade pokémon is Gurdurr. They insist they hate it and only traded it with MC to get rid of the damn thing. It has maxed out affection. Regardless of what MC trades back, P will act underwhelmed and mentions it will takes ages to train it up to their standards.
Path exclusive time, with two sword-themed pokémon to distance P from their father’s spears. Competition P has Ceruledge, representing their growing resentment, its dex entries state, “The fiery blades on its arms burn fiercely with the lingering resentment of a sword wielder who fell before accomplishing their goal.” and “An old set of armor steeped in grudges caused this Pokémon’s evolution. Ceruledge cuts its enemies to pieces without mercy.”. Cooperation P gets Scrappy Sirfetch’d, a chivalrous knight with a versatile movepool, which can make it a viable choice in both double and single battles.
M:
Spheal is M’s lovable starter. Their father was hoping M would dominate the battlefield with Walrein, but Spheal has refused to evolve so far. It stays small and cute on Alt M’s path. It finally evolves all the way into Walrein in Maso M’s path.
M gets Alolan Ninetales to match with their twin. They didn’t catch it and instead got it as a gift (from a relative? a suitor? who knows). Took ages for them to evolve it, even though they could have easily gotten an Ice Stone.
Their Komala is next, a pokémon that stays asleep its entire life. They are nap buddies.
Their trade pokémon is Dusclops. It evolves when traded while holding a Reaper Cloth, a nod to M’s planned use of scythes.
Path exclusives are both bangers. Maso M gets Baxcalibur, a pseudo-legendary Ice/Dragon; its signature ability, Thermal Exchange, boosts its attack when it is hit by a Fire-type move, which parallels Maso M needing to be hurt to be at their most effective. Alt M, for their part, nets Slaking, a ridiculously strong pokémon with attack and HP on par with legendaries, but held back by its Truant ability that forces it to only act every other turn; this matches M’s own strength being held back by their sleepiness and forces them to plan around it.
F:
Their starter pokémon is Serperior, a Grass-type that can stop its opponents’ movements with just a glare from its noble eyes. A smug grass snake for the smug forest royal.
Scolipede takes second. F likes to harvest its deadly poison to use in assassinations. It is a soft baby when it comes to F, though, happy to curl up at their feet while they are working.
Third is Drapion. It produces potent poison yet prefers using its physical strength to overpower foes. F’s loyal bodyguard that uses its force to intimidate anyone who might pose a threat to their trainer.
Next up is Parasect. Parastic mushrooms that take control over their host until it is nothing but an empty shell with nothing more to take. F loves their fungus zombie.
Their trade pokémon is Phantump. A child who died while lost in the forest and possessed a stump. F caught it during a rare moment of pity, they trade it with MC, claiming they got tired of babysitting. They will occasionally mention missing their Phantump, only to immediately scoff and pretend they never said that, what are you talking about?
For their route specific we have two interesting options. Royal F catches Tsareena, embodying F’s own cruel heart, with its dex entry stating, “In victory, it shows off by kicking the defeated, laughing boisterously.” Royal F loves when it does that. Peasant F gets Volcarona, a pokémon said to be the rage of the sun, a deity of fire, made to save people and pokémon from cold, and symbolic of F’s more heroic role in the Peasant path.
BONUS:
While it would be impossible to plan a whole team for MC, I believe their father would determine the available starters.
Papa Strom took MC to a military daycare center and had his kid choose from a hand-picked selection of starters. The options are:
Oshawott (Water): its final evolution, Samurott, is based off samurai. Since a Storm MC can have a katana, this seemed fitting.
Chespin (Grass): its final evolution, Chesnaught, is based off the concept of knights and armor.
Charmander (Fire): it seems fitting for a STORM MC to have a starter that can actually fly later on, not to mention how knights and dragons often appear side by side in stories.
Razor didn’t get to give his kid a pokémon. Luckily MC managed to steal one from a totally-not-fake pokémon professor that just so happened to wander on a poorly lit part of town with three starters on his belt. The options are:
Froakie (Water): ninja pokémon, perfect for a sneaky thief.
Rowlet (Grass/Flying): ghost archer with a Robin Hood theme, fitting for a more heroic Razor MC.
Tepig (Fire): its final evolution is based off a man who was assassinated by his own subordinates, foreshadowing MC’s own connection to assassins.
Dad Xero brought home a trio of pokémon he had been considering training for use in his lab. MC bonded particularly well with one of them and Xero decided to let his kid keep it. The options are:
Piplup (Water): evolves into a Water/Steel type, which is immune to poison. Having a pokémon with poison immunity is essential to many lab setting with dangerous chemicals abound.
Bulbasaur (Grass/Poison): the other side of the coin, a Grass/Poison type. Greatly useful for studying both antidotes and bio weapons.
Cyndaquil (Fire): its official category is the fire mouse pokémon, so it makes sense one would end up a lab rat.
Pops Scurra just sent a pokéball via mail one day, alongside a handful of trinkets. E’s mom may or may not have *gently* convinced him that his kid was old enough to get their own pokémom and mentioned a particular one she was sure MC would like. The options are:
Popplio (Water): a darling singer to provide musical accompaniment to MC’s performances.
Sprigatito (Grass): a magician ready to provide an enchanting performance alongside its trainer.
Scorbunny (Fire): its final evolution, Cinderace, has this tidbit on its pokédex entry, “It gets pumped up when cheered on. But if it starts showboating, it could put itself in a tough spot.” A good reminder for any performer.

Pokemon Card of the Day #3130: Pikachu & Zekrom-GX (Team Up)
Tumblr media
Pikachu & Zekrom-GX was given almost everything a card could ask for. There were ways to accelerate Energy early on, making a big turn 2 hit very possible. Said attack also got even more Energy from the deck and into play. The GX attack was not only strong, but Energy stacking could let it hit two Pokemon at once. There were also ways to boost damage here due to being a Lightning-type. It was like they built the format for this card. On top of that, they put Pikachu on it, making sure the mascot of the series got serious play. This is not to say that Pikachu & Zekrom-GX was by any means unstoppable, as other very good Tag Teams existed and there were viable decks beyond that. It is probably quite obvious that this card would at minimum be a threat for quite some time due to just how much help they gave it.
Pikachu & Zekrom-GX was actually on the lower end of Tag Team HP numbers, coming in at 240. This was still going to have the same result a lot of the time, but it did do things like save an Energy for Blacephalon or Turtonator, as well as letting Zoroark-GX get the 2-hit KO if fully set up. A Fighting Weakness occasionally mattered for the short time where Buzzwole was still hanging around. It also mattered just before this card rotated out with the rise of Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX, a card that could get a clean KO and do 120 to something on the Bench. The Metal Resistance was there, but it did not actually prevent an ADP boost from letting Zacian V reach a big KO. The Retreat Cost here was 3, and being a bulky Pokemon that gave up 3 Prizes meant that this was quite notable. Most decks running this card ran a few copies of Switch, with some going all the way to 4. This worked well with the combination of big HP and the ability to get Energy onto a new attacker while still making progress.
Full Blitz was a spectacular attack. 150 damage for 3 Lightning Energy would have been solid even by itself. Tapu Koko Prism Star or Boltund V could help get a 2 turn set-up for this, making the deck rather quick. It somehow got even better from there. You also got to search your deck for up to 3 Lightning Energy and attached them to 1 of your Pokemon. This could power up a second Pikachu & Zekrom-GX, or could go to another partner like Raichu & Alolan Raichu-GX, Boltund V, or Vikavolt V. This was generally set up to take down multi-Prize Pokemon in 2 hits, and single Prize Pokemon right away, but you could use Electropower to get a big KO in an important spot since the power was good enough to get close a lot of the time.
Tag Bolt GX did take up the team's GX attack, which did mean giving up the giant hit that Raichu & Alolan Raichu-GX provided if running that too. It was still very good, and if not up against another Tag Team it tended to be the better GX attack. The base was 200 damage for 3 Energy, which was in a nice spot to take down 2 Prize Pokemon. If 3 more Energy on top of that were attached, it also did 170 damage to 1 of the opponent's Benched Pokemon, potentially getting another KO in the process if Mew wasn't there to protect everything. Getting a big hit on 2 Pokemon could be game changing, even if it did require sticking a ton of Energy on one Pokemon. The strategy could definitely work considering how Full Blitz worked.
Pikachu & Zekrom-GX was given the right combination of support and powerful attacks to be a threat for multiple years. It made top cut at Worlds 2019, won a few regional tournaments with plenty of top results, and even once things shut down for the pandemic it was a top tier deck in online tournaments. The deck won at both the Pokemon Online Championships and Players Cup II, and only fell off right at the end when huge VMAX Pokemon and the rise of Fighting as a type finally caught up to it. This was one of the most popular decks of its era and saw a lot of success, and it deserved a lot of praise. This was not just being used because people liked Pikachu, after all.

what kinds of rockruff/lycanroc breeds are there? they're my favorite, so i'm curious
Hello! Here are some of the most common rockruff/lycanroc breeds that exist.
the Igneous breed is born to a Growlithe or Arcanine father. They are named after the types of rocks found on their fur being igneous rock. Some people believe that Rockruff and Lycanroc split off from the ancient Hisuian Growlithe and Arcanine and that this breed gives us an idea of what this transitional species looked like but there is no evidence to support this theory...yet.
the Petrified breed is born to a Houndour or Houndoom father. They are named after the hard, bone like structures that replace their rocks.
the Obsidian breed is born to a Poochyena or Mightyena father. They are named after the dark coloration of their fur and rocks.
the Magnetic breed is born to a Electrike or Manectric father. They are named after the magnetic properties of their rocks.
the Diamond breed is born to an Absol father. They are named after the fact that their rocks are diamonds!
the Meteorite breed is born to a Shinx, Luxio, or Luxray father. They are named after the rocks often having a similar composition to meteorites. They're also named after the star tip on their tail they inherit from their father.
the Sandstone breed is born to a Lillipup, Herdier, or Stoutland father. They are named this because their stones are sandstone.
the Fluffy breed is born to a Furfrou father. They are named this because they actually lack stones.
the Limestone breed is born to a Yamper or Boltund father. They are named this because their stones are made from limestone.
the Ruby breed is born to a Maschiff or Mabosstiff father. They are named this because their stones have a distinct red hue.
the Fossil breed is born to a Greavard or Houndstone father. They are named this because their stones have fossils in them.
the Amethyst breed is born to a Snubbull or Granbull father. They are named this because of the purple hue their stones take.
the Mud Pie breed is born to a Fidough or Dachsbun father. The inverse of this breed, a Fidough or Dachsbun with a Rockruff or Lycanroc father has the same name! Two pokemon having a breed that shares a name is very unusual but it is more common when it's the same two species.

Taking Lugia Vstar, a brand new deck archetype to a tournament with little playtesting, but a good understanding of win cons against the meta seemed like a solid option.
Regigigas for the Kyurem Vmax and Mew Vmax matches, Rekrom to help stall and target lightning weak Pokémon, Radiant Charizard for clean up duty and Yveltal for the dreaded Duraludon Vmax match.
What I didn't expect was a wild spread of decks including a pure lightning Boltund Vmax, Shadow Rider Calyrex, and Swim Freely Dewgong single prize!
------------------
Round 1: Ice Rider Calyrex w/Kyurem Vmax
Not much to say. Lugia Vstar did what it does. The Archeops hit the discard turn 1 through the use of Evolution incense and Ultra Ball, and came out to the bench turn 2 via Lugia V star's Summoning Star ability. This happened in both games and rest is history. Serena gusted up anything with energy attached to keep my opponent out of resources both games.
Game record 2-0
Tournament record 1-0
------------------
Round 2: Hisuian Zoroark
I knew this was a tough match. My opponent needed 2 turns to be hitting 280 damage (OHKO on Lugia Vstar) and I needed 2 to get Lugia firing so this was a race.
Unfortunately game one my hand bricked hard. No outs to discard 2 Archeops so went with one in the hopes of getting enough energy around to hang in.
Sadly it didn't go my way.
Game 2, back on form. My opponent missed their energy and I was able to boss Zoroarks up before they evolved. My opponent scooped once the second Zoroark V was taken out.
Game 3 was close. Both decks were firing and I was making good use of collapsed stadium to limit the damage output of my opponent.
A very choice Marnie disrupted my hand enough that I was forced to dig deep for an out but unfortunately back to back Marie's really ruined my flow and drew me into my remaining special energy. With no attach options left through Archeops it was inevitable...
Game Record 1-2
Tournament Record 1-1
------------------ Round 3: Shadow Rider Calyrex Game 1 went pretty straight forward. Lugia V opener, with plenty of fetch and discard to get 2 Archeops in the discard for a turn 2 Summoning Star. The Shadow Rider deck struggled to get going to it was a quick KO on 2 VMaxs and a win. Game 2 followed the same suit. Game Record 2-0 Tournament Record 2-1 ------------------ Round 4: Giratina VStar A round against a friend and someone from the same playset group. I Opened game 1 with 3 Lugia Vstar, 1 Lugia V, 2 Boss's Orders and an Ultra ball. No points for guessing how game one played out. With my opponent having a Battle VIP in hand, and Flower Selecting into a second, their board state just crippled me by turn 4. Game 2 played out better, and I took it to a single prize between us, using Zekrom to paralyze my opponents Giratina Vstar to buy myself some time. They promptly escape rope'd out of it, and by the next turn, missing a crutial Boss/Serena to take game, it meant I unfortunately tumbled to 2-2 on the day. Game Record 0-2 Tournament Record 2-2 ------------------ Round 5: Lugia VStar Round 5 was against another friend and fellow playtest group member. We were running near identical desks so it was a straight Lugia Vstar fight. We had decided prior to the game that I would concede to give them the win and guarantee they make top cut so we just played it out for the exhibition. Game 1 I stormed out to a solid position, hitting my discards perfectly. I utilised Zekrom to hold my opponent in place and hitting for weakness on their Lugia Vstar (a combination of Double Turbo energy and 2 Aurora meant I hit for 220 to keep them in place instead of the KO to buy myself some time) I went 2-1 for I got the glory between friends whilst helping our group of 3 take half of the top cut slots. Game Record 2-1 Tournament Record 2-3 ------------------ Overall, I think I had a good outing. I bricked a few times, made some sloppy plays due to hunger/thirst and missed some really easy plays. I've taken a lot away from the event in terms of my own play and my win conditions. It's also been a good test for Lugia, giving me plenty to think on and make some changes to the deck. Going 5th overall, and helping the "team" take 2 of 4 top cut slots was worth it, and ultimately they came 1st and 2nd on the day. The event itself wasn't without drama - players storming off after big losses, the event starting late, and questions around prizing, but that's for another time. Take it easy ~ Prof Hickory.

Champion Ash v Lieutenant Surge
I, admittedly, like writing pokemon battles. Especially Anime pokemon battles.
Surge gave a sharp grin and Ash almost rolled his eyes at him. "Ready to lose, runt?"
Pikachu sparked as Ash slipped into battle mode, "You wish."
"This will be a six-on-six Single Battle! Begin!"
"Magnezone! Let's crush this upstart!"
"Krookodile! Let's show him our progress!"
"Hah! Bad move! Magnezone, Signal Beam!"
"Dodge with Dig!" Magnezone was quick to charge and fire, but Krookodile was faster. The beam left a dent in the dirt, and Surge scowled,
"Magnet Rise!" Magnezone levitated even higher off the ground, and Krookodile shot up at a high speed,
"Close the gap with Aerial Ace, then Focus Blast!" Surge grit his teeth as Krookodile hit Magnezone point blank, the Magnet Area pokemon looking worse for wear.
"You got lucky, set up a Light Screen!"
Ash hummed in confusion, Magnezone had plenty of fight left, yet Surge was giving up on it. Disappointed, he sighed, "Finish this with a Bite!" Krookodile obeyed, and Magnezone was down. Krookodile glowed a little, showing Moxie's activation.
"Magnezone is unable to battle! Lieutenant, send out your next pokemon!"
"Boltund! Let's go, Howl!"
"Krookodile, Sandstorm then Bulk Up!"
Boltund was a lot faster than Krookodile. But speed could be worked around, even if he made it seem like the winning strategy way back when.
"Boltund, Play Rough!"
"Krookodile, Sand Attack, then dodge with Aerial Ace!"
Krookodile smacked Sand into Boltund's eyes and quickly jumped up to avoid the fairy type attack. Boltund was fast, but that doesn't mean anything if it couldn't see.
"Earthquake!"
"Endure!"
Boltund was hit, and once again Ash was confused, surely Boltund knew Protect? Or even Substitute? Or maybe it knew Counter.
"Boltund, Swift!"
No Counter then. There was no dodging Swift, but…
"Krookodile, Dig!"
Krookodile wasn't fast enough to avoid all the stars, but he did manage to avoid taking heavy damage. Boltund fainted before Krookodile popped out, sand whipping around violently. Moxie activated once more.
"Boltund is unable to battle! Lieutenant send out your next pokemon!"
"Electrode Explosion!"
Ash winced, "Protect!"
That was perhaps the quickest Protect Krookodile had ever put up. Surge gritted his teeth and Ash scowled. Did he really think Dig was his only protective move? Why would he send out a pokemon just to sacrifice it? Moxie activated and Light Screen dissolved.
"Electrode is unable to battle. Lieutenant send out your next pokemon!"
"Jolteon! Wreck this stupid Krookodile with Double Kick!"
Jolteon was extremely fast, too fast for Krookodile to dodge, "While it's close, Bite!"
It did a lot of damage because of Moxie and Bulk Up, but Jolteon wasn't out of the game just yet.
"Jolteon, Toxic!"
"Dig NOW!" Unfortunately, Krookodile wasn't fast enough to avoid it, the sandstorm buffeted Jolteon, and Dig took it out. Surge smirked.
"Jolteon is unable to battle. Lieutenant send out your next pokemon!"
"Krookodile, can you hang in there?" He nodded as Moxie kicked in one last time, and Ash let it be.
"Electivire, let's go! Power-Up Punch!"
"Earthquake!" Electivire was slightly faster than Krookodile, but one little hit wasn't enough to take him out of the game. With four Moxie boosts and Bulk Up, he attacked before succumbing to poison. The sandstorm ended, showing two fainted pokemon.
"Both pokemon are unable to battle! Please send out your next pokemon!"
"You did amazing, Krookodile. Pikachu, ready for a rematch?" Pikachu nodded, hopping off his shoulder and racing forward. Surge scoffed,
"Still haven't evolved it, runt? Raichu, let's sweep this kid!"
Ash scowled, "Pikachu, start with a Double Team and Light Screen!"
"Two can play that game, Raichu, Lucky Chant and Agility!"
Lucky Chant was new, he'd have to figure out what it did on the go,
"Pikachu, Dig!"
"Magnet Rise!"
"Connect with Iron Tail!"
"Dodge and Slam!"
Pikachu missed Iron Tail, but Raichu also missed Slam, if only barely. Raichu had gotten a lot faster over the years.
"Raichu, Thunderbolt!"
"Dodge and Encore!"
Pikachu didn't have Lightning Rod, but he could take Thunderbolts better than Slams. He used Quick Attack to dodge, landing a quick glancing blow, and Raichu was now stuck using Thunderbolt for at least a little while.
"Pikachu, let's take advantage of this, Agility, Nasty Plot, Charge Beam!"
Charge Beam hit hard, and the three Thunderbolts sent in retaliation didn't hurt too much thanks to Light Screen.
"Raichu, Toxic!"
"Pikachu, deflect with Iron Tail! Point blank Swift!"
Raichu was sent careening into the wall by a vengeful Pikachu, but he wasn't out yet. Surge seemed infuriated that Pikachu was doing so well.
"Raichu, Dig!"
"Pikachu, Agility, then Iron Tail!"
Raichu retreated into the ground and Pikachu took the chance to raise his speed again. Dawn started a chant of "Kick his ass!" in the stands, which Surge wasn't taking kindly too, if his reddening face was any indication. He'd have to thank her later.
Pikachu sent Raichu right back into the hole it made and followed up with a Volt Tackle to press his advantage. The power behind the move sent Raichu deeper into the hole, and Pikachu flying into the wall.
Pikachu got up and shook off the injury, but Raichu had yet to resurface. The referee waited for a minute, before throwing down his flag,
"Raichu is unable to battle! Champion Ash Ketchum wins!"

Pokemon Card of the Day #3027: Zeraora-GX (Lost Thunder)
Tumblr media
Zeraora-GX was one of a series of cards meant to boost the Lightning-type from a fringe choice to being at the top of the game. It did so by helping Pokemon of the type to retreat more easily, which quickly helped some of the best Pokemon in the game. Zeraora-GX could also attack, with how useful that was depending on the actual Pokemon used in said Lightning deck. The help did require actually attaching something to each Pokemon, which was a minor issue, and you couldn't repeatedly attack with Zeraora itself, so it wasn't perfect. It brought a pretty valuable idea that had worked in the past to a new type, so it was hard to imagine it not seeing play.
190 HP was a good number for a Basic Pokemon-GX. A lot of similar Pokemon were around 180, and the extra 10 HP made a decent bit of a difference sometimes, especially in mirror matches between 2 Pikachu & Zekrom-GX decks since the main attacker would need that second Electropower to get rid of the opponent's retreating help. There was a Fighting Weakness here, which was a minor issue in the SUM-On format that still had the occasional Buzzwole or Lycanroc-GX. Said Pokemon were well past their prime, however, and once rotation happened Fighting was one of the weaker types for a while. The Metal Resistance didn't change much, as it took until Zacian V's release to see Metal get big attacking decks and the damage output there was high enough that the Resistance didn't help. The Retreat Cost here was 2, and it was notable if the opponent had Power Plant in as the Stadium. Power Plant was reasonably popular in decks not using Abilities on Pokemon-GX, and Lightning decks did tend to want to run some Switch just to be safe.
Thunderclap Zone was a fantastic Ability. Each of your Pokemon with any Lightning Energy attached had no Retreat Cost. Decks with this did need to run a decent amount of Energy so attaching all over the board was feasible. This went especially well with cards like Tapu Koko Prism Star and Pikachu & Zekrom-GX, which could get Lightning Energy accelerated into play. Being able to pivot was a huge deal, especially in decks that ran Pokemon with huge HP numbers that might be able to hide on the Bench after the rotation of Guzma and before Boss's Orders brought that whole thing back. Other similar effects in between still existed but were a bit less common since they weren't quite as reliable.
Plasma Fists was a surprisingly good attack. 2 Lightning and a Colorless Energy was enough to deal 160 damage, and Electropower could get this to KO something in some match-ups. Zeraora-GX couldn't attack on your next turn after using it, and you'd probably be relying on other Pokemon to do most of your attacking, especially once all the Tag Teams were available to the type. Zeraora-GX was strong enough to be a back-up at times, as 160 was no joke. You just didn't want to end up seeing this get Knocked Out and end up losing your free switches as a result.
Full Voltage GX just needed a Lightning Energy and let you attach 5 Basic Energy cards to your Pokemon in any way you wanted. Getting that much Energy in play was really impressive, and some games where things were slow to get going might actually get use out of this. It was, however, an attack from a Pokemon-GX that did no damage, which meant possibly dealing with taking damage in return and problems later on due to that. If you really needed that burst of Energy, however, and could afford to lose the GX attack for the game, this was here and was something to keep in mind for the right spot.
Zeraora-GX was seen a ton in competitive play. Most Lightning decks used it, as free retreating was a rather powerful effect to give to a Pokemon. With Pokemon like Zapdos, Pikachu & Zekrom-GX, Rayquaza-GX, and Boltund V around, Zeraora-GX had plenty of decks to fit into. The result was a very important card during its time in the game for a type that already had a ton to work with.
