Saint of the Day – 2 November – Blessed John Bodey (1549-1583) Layman, Martyr, Husband and Schoolmaster. Born in 1549 at Wells, Somerset, England and died on 2 November 1583 at Andover, England by being hanged, drawn and quartered for the crime of being a Catholic and refusing to accept Elizabeth I, Queen of England, as the Head of the Church. Blessed John was Beatified on 15 December 1929…

Bodie, US

Bodie lies on the easternmost edge of California, between the lush green valleys of Yosemite and the deserts of Nevada. It was named after the New York prospector WS Bodey, who struck gold nearby in 1859. The 1870s saw Bodie transformed from a sleepy backwater to a boomtown with the discovery of even bigger gold deposits. At its peak Bodie had 10,000 residents and about 250 buildings.

The beginnings of Bodie’s decline had set in by the 1880s, and it was wholly abandoned in the 1940s. In 1962 it was designated a state historic park, and ordered (with some foresight) to be preserved in a condition of “arrested decay”, meaning its buildings would essentially be suspended in their dishevelled state. This means the town survives as a time capsule of the wild frontier.
