The first translation of this line I read it was different, it said "The obsession of your teen years", and I assumed Hawks was saying he knew Enji was obsessed by the idea to became the n.1 since he was a teenager but he didn't imagine the thing went so out of hand.

This translation MAKES more sense, but made me wonder about Enji's reaction to it.

He looks... embarrassed?

He doesn't seem surprised to hear he was Hawks' obsession when he was a kid. It's possible he already suspected so much. After all, we saw no matter what a big fool the guy can be, he is in able to do 2+2. He did it with the Hero Killer's location, with Hawks' secret code and the hospital tip, with Deku/OFA... he probably guessed all the interest and trust Hawks was showering him wasn't only because he suddenly became the Number One on the chart. If he knew Hawks used to be inspired by him, then he knew not everything he did leadt to something bad. And what he did wrong, it didn't destroy everything. A comfort of a sort.

Hawks' renewed support here means more than "Endevour needs help". Like Hawks he said, he is back to his hero origin. And that origin was Endeavor. To refute the idea he did something good would mean to refute himself. In fact, some people thought Hawks had to become a villain after the revelation, but Horikoshi was pretty clear about him: his character is optimistic at fault, or better he represents an optimistic view on life. He stands the fact that heroes can be less than perfect, but what of good they did is still there, it not has to burn away automatically. World is a dark place, but that doesn't mean the only way out is destroying it (and yourself).

1. Back in the deviant art days I think I can consider myself a part of the fma fandom back then. But as far as really deeply discussing things and caring enough to pay close attention to details and make predictions and theories etc., BNHA is the first one.

2. 299: Hawks’s backstory explains a lot about his actions we saw from his introduction up to that point. I would say it’s a good chapter in the big picture, but unfortunately there is 0 follow up on his one-sided attachment to Endeavor, so far. I’m still waiting. 300-302: mm, my initial opinion was bad, but that’s because the fandom reaction worried me into feeling bad about them. Looking back, I’m pretty happy with Touya’s backstory and how everything panned out. I like that it wasn’t just another Shouto situation, I like how complicated and messy it is, because it makes Touya as a character a lot more interesting to follow until the end. The negative feelings I have are more so just me waiting for something to finally happen with Endeavor. He keeps dodging responsibility, which is in character for him, but I’m waiting for the story to make him stop dodging. I can feel that we’re getting there. There is literally no other next step that can be taken with the Todoroki arc, with Endeavor and Touya and Shouto. The hospital chapters don’t bother me. What bothers me is the follow up after, which (much like with Hawks) I’m just waiting to see finally happen. 303: I really didn’t like this chapter. Not when it came out, and not now. Mostly because if Hawks was going to insert himself into the Todoroki situation, it’d be nice for it to actually have some sort of impact. At the time, the framing around him wanting to continue supporting Endeavor seemed like it would imply that Hawks would make sure Touya specifically never got another chance to make his dad face him. At any costs. Unfortunately I was let down and the ominous framing and Hawks’s fucked decision to back Endeavor of all people all amounted to….nothing. Nothing consequential. Again, still waiting to see how this plays out because the manga isn’t over and Hori’s writing style sometimes delivers on things, just at fucking awful pacing—same with him and Twice—but currently it’s just ಠ_ಠ ugh

3. I don’t have much of an opinion on it like, quality wise. I like the chapter, seeing AFO’s face finally was exciting. Being right about him making a comeback with a face reveal was REALLY exciting. It’s too early to tell how good of a chapter it is in the big picture, and there isn’t any follow up on it yet. But I think there will be. What I think is gonna happen as a result of it though is that with Kurogiri AFO is gonna somehow be put in Shigaraki’s vicinity, Spinner will be put in Shigaraki’s vicinity, Aizawa and Midoriya will end up with him there too, and things will get worse. And I think Aizawa will put a stop to AFO’s rewind, landing him permanently as the final challenge for everyone.

1) The first ever anime I got obsessed with was Inuyasha, an absolute classic. 😌

2) I hated them. Full stop. I've ranted and reblogged so much about those chapters and I'll go in depth if asked again lol.

3) The weirdest dream I had I think is finding myself in a cemetery, in a wedding gown, fighting off a hoard of zombies with just a bottle. I don't know either.

bnha ch 290: yup i remember all the way back when the mountain training camp arc released and people called it then. i was just about to say something about reaping and sowing ha.

297: surprised this max security prison for super dangerous quirk users doesn't have quirk suppressants and body armor for everyone.

298: now that i think about it. eraser head knew about eri's progress. he choose to amputate himself because at that moment they couldn't afford a second, though shigaraki managed to break contact anyways and im not sure his leg could have been salvaged. also surprised the hospital isn't overloading rooms given the major disaster that happened. bakugou's room has a lot of empty space.

303: i dislike the framing here that toya a child of 13 and younger was the one in the wrong here. horikoshi is framing toya's actions as out of line and sure burning himself wasn't the healthiest coping mechanism but he was not the main problem. also i've love to say 12 year old fuyumi blaming herself for her family's problems was insightful commentary on how eldest daughters get treated as 3rd parents instead of the children they are but thats giving horikoshi-sensei a little too much credit.

314: im sensing a double standard here for who gets assassinated and who gets imprisoned. like they imprisoned all for one and gigantomachia but these smups are the ones the public safety commission is killing? see my lack of knowledge on how the japanese government works means im only vaguely guessing what all these organizations do.

320: midoriya cannot continue as he is but wasnt the whole point to keep him away from ua. i dislike when plans are changed halfway through they either should have committed to fortifying ua or kept up support of his feral rabbit lifestyle. in terms of wellness he's gone too far in neglecting himself I'm just wondering if what they did was actually a good plan.

historically speaking, american foreign involvement is.. iffy. if the cia are involved things are probably going to get worse im looking at like a good chunk of latin america and the banana wars. arguably some of the more publicized stuff helped like taiwan, south korea, germany, and japan are doing pretty well for themselves, and the financial/logistics backing for europe and now ukraine (well the ww2 stuff was pure war profiteering). and then there's inherent abuses of the us industrial military complex, tax payer money to line the pockets of weapons manufacturers and defense contractors, preying on the poor with funding from tax dollars, the rampant abuse and all the crimes that get covered, the lack of regulation in general so you have human rights abuses environmental damage military bases usually poison the surrounding areas.

332: hmm we're too early in this fight. i think some of the pilots will die.

335: holy shit if those hagakure is the spy than the conspiracy theorists got it right. i remember there was this old fan theory circa 2017? 2018? which posited hagakure was the spy because how else did someone so weak get into ua like she can turn invisible and that's it. and how narratively she hadn't done anything while everyone else how a few pages at least. at the time i thought it was a cool idea for an otherwise boring character but the lack of evidence stopped me from going all in on it. in the early arc its said? implied? that there's a spy in UA and people were able to logic and reason it down to probably being a student (i dont remember how they ruled teachers out). hagakure was suspect number 1 but there were a couple other 1 A put up.

336: oh yeah the secret forest training camp. and yeah aoyama was the other one speculated to be a spy. the other conspiracy theoriests got it right!

Some "why-they-even-bothered-to-do-it" changes in the anime:

The fact Rei was always bringing the lunch on a tray to Enji every time we saw them talking without their children

Enji being in his hero costume when he went to search for Touya

A severely lack of All Might being All Might in those flashbacks, they were the cherry on the top in the manga

The first point in particular, it confounds me... Like... why? What Bones was trying to say there? That there was no other occasion of communication between them beside when she brought him food in the training room, because he never went out of it? Or it was just to make us to see he was regularly deserting family lunches, the same family lunches we know Enji is now dreaming from a while, with his family all dining happily without him (but apparently that would totally normal even with him in the house, according this)? Was it to enhance Rei's position as "traditional house wife", and to underline how much it felt different in the last season (the Ending episode) with Enji eating with the others and washing dishes? Or they just wanted to stress how much he obsessed on his work, always being in the training room at home, and in hero uniform outside?

Either way, meh.

Another difference is the engagement scene: Enji's eyes were more thin (like in his "bad days") and they used a lot more words to explain Rei's relatives were not beggars needing of money to survive, but entitled people being greed, and clearing up how they made it to look as a common arranged marriage for the public but the involved people all knew it was a quirk marriage. They wanted to stress the fact Rei knew what she was accepting (not the abuse but that the purpose of the marriage was to produce the perfect heir, justifying Touya's rage against her) and the fact she could refuse the arrangement. But the scene with Enji being angry and looking at her with blame after Natsuo's birth, kind to weaken that excellent point. And that is a shame, because people marrying and having children without to properly reflect about what that means for the new life you are creating, people making arrangements without to care about the fact they are signing up more than themself in the deal, is a problem that deserves more attention. But I think that it hit too much close to home, there are so many people who put children in this world without to be prepared, they don't want to feel blamed and hear they should to do things differently, especially if they are suffering too. But if we don't talk about it, nothing can change.
