do you know any show where there's a popular kid/lonely kid trope? ☺️

not many of the shows i've watched fit this trope exactly (and especially the one i have in my head where the lonely kid has zero friends and the popular guy has roses blooming any time he enters the room) but i've compiled a list with couples whose dynamics resemble it, somewhat? i hope that's okay, when it comes to anon requests i kinda have to read minds so i rely on "more is more"

Fish Upon the Sky - starting off with a great example of a kid with a low self-esteem searching for love and the heartthrob chasing after him; it's also enemies to lovers though completely one-sided lmao

Semantic Error - we've got the campus hottie and the most antisocial man in that whole uni (though if you ask Sangwoo he'd deny he's lonely, he's just self-sufficient); P.S as per MDL, Jaeyoung is described as stylish, fun-loving, and – above all – extraordinarily popular. He is the closest thing the college has to a superstar!

I Will Knock You - Noey is a gang leader whom good girls swoon over and Thi, though pretty content with his friend group, is a cowardly goody two-shoes; he doesn't fit the loner trope perfectly but their dynamic is really interesting and worth paying attention to imo

Be My Favorite - Kawi and Pisaeng fit the descriptions perfectly but their love story doesn't develop the cliche way; Kawi is a fiesty bitter lil thing and Pisaeng is the warm sociable type of popular guy

Dangerous Romance - Kang with his teen hormones, unresolved issues and attitude problem is a bully who tried recreating his own fight scene a la F4 style and we know Domyouji is peak drama popular guy (or, since we're talking Thai shows, Thyme); Sailom seems to not be that much on the lonely side at first but the more you get into his character the more you see how befitting this title is

Blueming - the kid that did everything to be popular and the naturally charismatic sweetheart cross paths

To My Star - this doesn't really fit till you realise Seojoon is a literal celebrity and Jiwoo is a pit of loneliness and scepticism

Love Class S2 - again, not too fitting but the side couple of Maru and Minwoo bring a bit of it to the table because Maru is unbearably sociable while Minwoo keeps to himself to the point of misery

Cherry Magic - i mean. shining star of the office Kurosawa/Karan and blending-into-the-background Adachi/Achi kinda fit the bill

Utsukushii Kare - high school? check. popular dude? check. outcast kid who worships popular fella's existence? check! side note, i'd say the way Kiyoi is basically forced to pursue Hira cause he's so dense is hilarious

Fukou-kun wa Kisu Suru Shikanai! - oh, my lovely. the first show from Drama Shower. sweet and approachable Naoya whose good luck rubs off on cute Kota whose loneliness is somewhat brought upon by his constant misfortune. again, the "lonely kid" here has a bit of a mean streak which makes him very entertaining

Senpai, Danjite Koi de wa! - these dudes are in the workforce too but we have the competent charismatic senior and the awkward intern looking up to him

Minato Shouji Coin Laundry - Akira has been running from himself for so long and here comes the handsome smart dude determined to love the f out of him, i'd ssy they count lol

Takara-kun to Amagi-kun - we've got the poker-faced ikemen and his shy beloved

Kabe Koji - literal pop idol with sunshine personality and brooding mess of a doujinshi author (self-esteem issue included, of course)

Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu - words can't explain these two's dynamic and how intriguing it is to me; Ritsu is a hot guy menace (derogatory) and Masumi has that bit of a crazy streak that works in their favour

Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo - the loner/popular dude dynamic here is somewhat lowkey? the "loner" is sociable and you can't really tell the "popular kid" is one based on his attitude at all, it's way more of a friends to lovers (with a touch of love at first sight if you ask me <3 )

About Youth - i wondered whether to include this one but the mdl description convinced me; they're a swooned-over straight A student and a shy musician, real cuties

Taikan Yoho - the vibes are very different from what you'd imagine with this trope but it technically fits lol, we've got a manga artist who stays at home all day and a handsome weatherman whose company is seeked by everyone

The Best Story - it's YinWar.

21 Days Theory - X and Q participating in a challenge that leads to romance, it's really cute

i can't pick which hyperfixation to focus on so imma pivot in the opposite direction and just comment on all the dramas i've watched in the last couple months, both queer and not

2gether- Tropewise this should've been a home run but sarawat and tine just didn't vibe with me as a couple. If i was ranking it, it'd be like a 4/10. Basic, boring, those peep marshmallows with no depth of flavour.

Still 2gether- No plot but they had better chemistry this time. 6/10

3 will be free- 9/10, delightfully queer, I liked the side plots, i liked the main plot, point off only because Shin getting insecure and running off got repetitive.

A man who defies the world of bl 1+2- It was funny, i loved the parody aspect of it, probably would've liked it more if i had more than a cursory familiarity with yaoi as a genre. Liked s1 better than s2. 7/10

About Youth- It was fine? I liked it well enough while watching but it didn't stick out. Nothing you haven't seen before, rich/poor, popular/outcast etc. It had more of a queer vibe to it but i wish it lingered more, like old fashioned cupcake or itsay does. The love interest's best friend though, I loved. 5/10 because it's more interesting than 2gether and the chemistry was pretty good.

Bad Buddy: someone said that starting with this show was a bad idea because it would set the standards too high and they were absolutely correct. This show might as well be perfectly catered to me, it's got great chemistry, is fun to analyze, it's queer, it introduced me to Nanon, what's not to love. 12354678/10. Incomparable.

Be loved in house: I do - Office enemies-to-lovers. Very cute. Basic's only a crime if i didn't enjoy it and I did so 6/10.

Blacklist- The expectations I had for this show. Prim, Love, Ohm, Nanon, Khaotung, basically all my favourite gmmtv actors were in it and it sucked ass. I could've dealt with the growing ridiculousness of the school plot if the romances weren't the flattest, most cliche shit known to mankind. As it is, I didn't finish the show nor will I ever. Also watching this after Gifted is a special kind of hell because Nanon's playing the same character except written worse. -3/10.

Blueming -nothing special, I liked how the lead's family dynamics were portrayed. Like most kbls, too short for my liking. 5/10.

F4 Boys over Flowers. Believe it or not, this is the first version of boys over flowers i've watched. It meandered at times but was overall entertaining. I like useless bickering in my romances and Tu is charming as Gorya. Bright was pretty good too, I liked him better here than I did in 2gether. Milk's characters should've been in love with Gorya instead of Thyme though and the fact that she wasn't when they had so much chemistry is a crime. 8/10.

Business Proposal - As seems to be the trend with het kdramas, the beginning and end are both boring af, but the middle portions were pretty good. Both the romances were cute and I liked the chemistry between all the leads well enough. Also, i love a good running gag and it was funny watching everyone misunderstand the ceo and bodyguard's relationship. 7/10 because it's the first kdrama i actually watched til the end which just made the last ep that much more dissatisfying.

Reveal your Watch and Rewatch List! (BL Edition!!)

Thank you my love @disaster-j for tagging me - This is extremely overdue I know; I had this whole post written out almost 2 weeks ago but then right when I was getting ready to publish this 💖lovely💖 website decided to refresh and my post was lost. I was so mad that I didn't want to re-write it, but here I am anyways.

Currently Watching (I'm extending this to shows that have juuust finished too)

Kinnporsche - It's so fresh in my mind. I have way too many thoughts about this show to put down here, so i'm going to make another post similar to my Not Me Retrospective - all the things that were right and the things that were not. It may not have stuck to the book, and it may not have fully lived up to all the hype and expectations, but it's still unlike any other BL i've seen so far. Gotta commend them for that. Also it's the VegasPete show now, sorry I didn't make the rules. 7/10 (i'm sorry pls don't @me just read my retrospective later)

To My Star 2: Our Untold Stories - talented brilliant incredible amazing show-stopping spectacular...I think she deserves a separate post for herself too. Maybe when i'm not drowning under the guilt of not working on my Dissertation. There wasn't too much angst, the ending wasn't rushed, it was honestly perfect. Imperfect can be perfect too, you know. 11/10

Old Fashion Cupcake - I had low expectations for this so it kind of blew me out of the water. Great acting, incredible chemistry, and that scene in Ep 4 lives rent free in my brain. It's amazing how they (mostly) managed to tell a story in just 5 episodes and still have it feel complete and not unnecessarily rushed. A teensy bit of beef with how the finale went, but there's always something isn't there. 8.5/10

My Secret Love - Pretty mid, like the standard GMMTV sort of fare, featuring My-ponytail-is-my-personality-trait Boy, Walmart Saint Suppapong, Why RU's too-many-couples disease, mildly problematic behavior and a thin excuse of a plot. Still, it's nice to get something banal and light-hearted after all the weekend angst of KP and TMS. The latest ep was surprisingly better and less superficial than all the others so far.

Star and Sky: Sky in my Heart - The sequel to JoongDunk's Star in my Mind, this is typical lighthearted GMMTV stuff ft. P'Mek and debut actor Mark. A series of mini-series' where new couples get to flex their acting muscles a bit and test out their chemistry on the screen. I don't have much to say except it's soft and cute, nothing too groundbreaking.

What were the BLs that took you by surprise last year? 

i won't lie, i wasn't surprised that i enjoyed kinnporsche, but to the extent that i did (and of course still do), that was kinda surprising. they had me paying to watch a livestream of gay™ the musical, and i'm not even mad. it was my first thai bl, so, oh lord, my standards were raised.

last twilight in phuket - controversial, but i think i prefer it to i told sunset about you (though itsay is so so good). i didn't know 13.43 mins could make me feel so much, but there we are, and i'm very happy to be in that situation.

What were the BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with last year? 

oh i have some very controversial opinions on this–

- there's one that everyone really loves that i didn't finish, thought it was trying to be bigger than what it was (if that makes sense), and just found it really... boring. it got to one plot line and i'd had enough– though i'm willing to give it a re-try because, granted, i was in a kinnporsche mourning period when it came out. im not even gonna name it because i swear everyone i follow loves it (welp-)

- to my star

again, controversial, but i haven't seen this being talked about as much as the last one. i haven't seen s2, but oh my god, i'm sorry but i was so bored, and this was before kinnporsche so my standards weren't even insanely high, yeahhh

- blueming

it wasn't *bad*, but the way everyone hyped up made me think it was gonna be something really special, yeah i was definitely disappointed

- cutie pie

didn't finish. arranged marriage is never my favourite, but i'd heard so many people say how good it was, and sometimes you have to trust the crowd. i didn't find that here. i may well re-try it, along with the unnamed show further up, but yeahhhh. best part was perth, and he genuinely might be the only reason i try it again.

What was your favourite BL last year? 

unsurprisingly, kinnporsche :)

i'd been without a favourite show for a little while, which is so so unlike me. i tend to need something to consume me and kinnporsche just did that. first ep and holy fucking shit, *that* is what i'm talking about. i hadn't actually heard of it until an edit came up on instagram, and i instantly downloaded iqiyi, found ep 1 and 2 were out, binged those, and fell in love really

when i say it became my favourite show just from the first episode, i truly mean that. it was the biggest power move of a first episode and ughdhdh perfect <33

i've tried (and will continue to try) to convince my mates to watch it. i have been successful once with the whole show. a few of my mates just know vegaspete as KFCock, but yknow a win is a win, they are aware of their existence, which i'll gladly take.

If you had to suggest a BL for someone, what would it be? 

allow me to suggest a few~~

kinnporsche

- mafia, but *sometimes* make it wholesome. and then add a hearty dose of PAIN. perfect :D,, i know i've already said it, but i'll say it again it's consumed me, and i'm so grateful. i had some of the worst exams when it was coming out, and kinnporsche genuinely got me through each week, kept me smiling, made everything just a bit more bearable, and i am forever grateful for that.

strangers from hell

- what do you mean it's not a bl. of course it is. whatever moon-jo and jong-woo have going on is most definitely *not* heterosexual. also there was way more chemistry between those two than jong-woo and ji-eun. if you're looking for a comfort psychological thriller, this is it :D - i mean it's the most wholesome show i've ever watched, just two guys bonding over shared interests and falling in love (aww)

till the world ends

- on my knees begging someone to watch it– it's really pretty, made me cry, from a very small film company and eee i love it

i told sunset about you (& last twilight in phuket)

- so so aesthetic and pretty and ughfhhf– last twilight in phuket is maybe one of the prettiest thing i've seen. itsay is also so so pretty. HOWEVER, for the sake of your own sanity, don't watch i promised you the moon. i mean ep 1 is really good, but after ep 3 and maybe ep 2? hell naw

- this may have been my first bl? idk, anyway, it'll forever have a soft spot in my heart, it's wholesome enemies to lovers 😌😌 also i'll say series > film – the film is literally 3 hours long, which i wasn't prepared for so that's kinda on me, but yeah

cherry blossoms after winter

- i had shitty mocks when this came out and it made every thursday so much better. it's really wholesome and very much screams comfort.

the stranded

not explicitly a bl, however there's one canon mlm couple, another borderline canon mlm ship, and basically canon lesbians. it's kinda like a thai teen version of lost (idk if any of yall have seen that) but yeah :)

south korea just owns zombies honestly, because everything i've seen is so good, even the not so well rated ones (this,, train to busan, all of us are, #alive - to some extent)

Have you seen To My Star? S2 is coming out on the 5th and I'm excited for it. If you haven't watched, I hear there's gonna be some references between them and Blueming, if that peaks your interest!

I did see TMS and it was a very good little show and S2 appeals to me not at all.

I hate break ups.

I hate long separation.

The idea that he leaves him behind, moves out and starts his own life and that he has to be hunted down in order to get back together is like... nightmarish.

I don't know how I'm gonna handle this.

Honestly, this might one where I wait and see about the ending. But I don't know if I have the patience for that.

But ugh.

If there must be a second season, I far prefer 'outside issues' to 'internal issues' and this is the exact opposite of what I wanted when people said this was happening.

I mean, honestly, TMS was a show that I do not understand the idea of a second season at all but if there had to be one to start with 'they break up and are completely apart and oh yeah he has a kid calling him dad now' is just... no, please don't. My heart. Why?

They had worked so hard to get together. They found each other! They loved each other! They put in so much work and love and tenderness and for the show to go 'second season is all that work failed' just breaks my heart.

I watch BL as an escape into a world where a happy ending is happily ever after and love wins and the boys live happily into the sunset.

So, yes. I know about TMS and the second season but I'm not talking about it much because I just don't know what I'm gonna do.

ohhh shit, okay. so.

cql was the most draining show - it's amazing and so enticing but i had never watched anything from the wuxia genre before so it was A Lot..i would not rewatch it tbh, maybe the special addition if i miss wangxian too much 💞 it's so tragic and i'm always at risk of The Feels when i come across any cql or mdzs post, not to mention the yi city arc which fucked me up in a particular way...

woh doesn't make me as emotional because everyone is insane? it's actually impressive how unhinged every single person in the show is, the stories are tragic too, especially the last episodes but i was kind of numb to it, decided to focus on my guys and their happy ending only ✌️

woh gave me wen kexing, visuals (the designs of the characters are wild, espeecially the ghosts, they're straight out of a children's book, so expressive and individualistic) and the most blatant expression of romance they could - not only could you feel the love through each gaze, touch and action but boundaries were pushed in terms of script and the portrayal of physical affection was more than what they had to do. also i'm obsessed with the lipreading videos <3

boyyy i would usually say pat no questions asked but i think about pran and how he's handled all that his mom put him through and how he clearly struggles in so many ways and my protective instincts are screaaming, he's such a brave patootie (or, yknow, patootie)..but yeah no, i'll say pat, he is so loving loving loving despite everything, so considerate, so caring, he's a bit of a jock, a bit of a theatre kid, a bit of a band member - he's straight out of high school musical but adorable

To My Star or To My Star 2

TMS2!! i am sure s1 is great but it just didn't leave a lasting impression on me, it was the second season that had me shaking in excitement and yelling at the screen and going through tumblr to read analyses and stuff. it made me care about seojoon and jiwoo soo much and even if in the future i find the first season better in retrospect, s2 is my baby (and it got me so excited bout daseul's vision for blueming 2 🥰)

ohh that's interesting..maithee, namo and phum are all annoying but supportive losers lol

i dont have much of an opinion on any of them like phum was a villain for most of the show and then he had a glow up and became a rich hottie with a cute boyfriend, namo was a decoy that suddenly became a part of the squad and i dont remember much about maithee in the og show honestly.. based on the our skyy 2 episodes, i'll go with namo - he gave off sweet supportive kid who just wants to be loved and that's pathetic and cute <3 (tho maithee deserves betterrr)

in terms of whipped, i think i'd go with palm. man is borderline crazy for nueng, it's impressive. with their our skyy 2 eps out it's confirmed it's not just teen hormones lol

when it comes to my personal fave...they're both precious and frustrate me a lot but ig i'd go with tinn - i think of his reaction to gun rawring at him, about him coming back with those grocery bags.. he's so intense and awkward and devoted but it's not in the way palm is (which makes even me a bit uncomfortable hahah)

i cannot deal with salty food, i'm more sensitive to salt than others so whatever noey's cooking has got going on that makes others spit it out immediately? not for me. nuh uh.

i can't find tan's noodles but i found the chicken scene and boyy that is probably salty on top of burnt and with disgusting texture soo (also burnt on the outside raw on the inside is wildd)

yeah. noey's food. small bites, lots of water - if it's otherwise tasty then i'll take a day to finish it, it's cool. :') (on a side note they'd both look with such anticipation and nervousness and wide eyes and aaa reminds me of dfqc, i love it when bad cooks try their best and realise they suck lol)
