Built on Sand: A Black Sails Creative Event

Hi folks! Black Sails may be a smallish fandom, but it is packed full of incredible talent and creativity. Built on Sand is a project intended to support that creativity by providing inspiration and connection to anyone creating art centered on the show. There are three main parts:

A Prompt Based Art Fest: People will be able to submit prompts or ideas for art they would like to see here. The prompts that have been submitted can be viewed here, and artists can claim and create content based on them through the creator sign up form. The intention is for this part to be as straightforward and free of barriers as possible. Anyone can submit prompts (you don't have to be a creator as well) and "Art" is defined in the broadest possible terms.

The Built on Sand Discord Server: A place to talk about the show that has burrowed into our brains and ruined our lives (and we're doing a group rewatch!) Want to yell about your project? Need somewhere to ask about obscure details of the show, or random boat nerd facts? Come join us! No pressure to engage more than you're comfortable with. All are welcome, creators and enjoyers alike, the only requirements are that you be over 18 and have some interest in Black Sails fanworks.

Fic: Paper Boats

Fandom/pairing: Glee, Kurt/Blaine

Event: December Klaine Fanworks Challenge 2023 (sail)

Summary: After Kurt returns to the United States, Blaine has trouble adjusting to a new companionship.

Notes: This is part of my Mormon!Klaine universe. It takes place after Out of Eden, which I am still in the process of posting to AO3. It’s among the likely possibilities for their future. Warning for situational depression, but the story ends on a hopeful note. Elder Nixon is Warbler Trent.

It had started as a beautiful, sunny day at the park, but now enough clouds had rolled in that the sun was blocked and the whole place had a gray, overcast vibe, which was not helping Blaine's mood at all. Just as bad, the floods of people walking through the park had slowed down to a trickle, which meant Blaine couldn't distract himself by striking up a new conversation with a stranger every few minutes.

He sat on a stone ledge a few meters away from the water fountain. There were a couple of kids walking around it, taking turns dragging a toy boat along the edge of the artificial pool by a bright yellow string. Well, he thought, that was one good thing. When the sky grew dark like this, colors grew more saturated. The chalk drawings he and Elder Nixon had made this morning with shades that looked almost pastel in direct sunlight were now full of deep, rich color. He stared at their depiction of the pre-mortal world lit by a rainbow sun. It was almost as bright and beautiful as an actual sunset. Blaine wished he was there now. In the pre-mortal world, he had never had to be apart from Kurt.

This mortal world sucked.

“Did you ever have one of those things?” Elder Nixon asked. He stood next to Blaine, nodding at the kids with their tugboat.

“No,” sighed Blaine. “There wasn't much water in Mesa accept for the reflecting pool at the temple, and I wasn't allowed to play in there of course.”

“We had a game we liked to play in the inflatable pool when we stayed at our summer cabin in Minnesota. Have you ever heard of Viking funeral?”

“I've heard of Vikings having funerals. Didn’t the rich ones get buried in their boats?”

“Maybe? This game may or may not have had its origins in actual Viking traditions. Basically, we’d make paper boats— Hey. Want to make some paper boats? We’ve got plenty of paper.” Without waiting for an answer, Elder Nixon sat down on the ledge next to Blaine and set the flyers he’d been holding in his hand between them. “There's more here than we can possibly give out. You learned to make paper boats, right? Even if they didn't let you float them in the reflecting pool?”

“Yeah,” Blaine said sullenly. “Not sure I remember how, though.”

"Well, I do. Here—" Elder Nixon demonstrated the first fold, and refused to proceed until Blaine copied him, and so on with the next and next, until each of them had a little paper boat with a stout triangular mast in the center. Blaine felt the memory reawakening in his muscles, so he made another one and then another one, each more crisply executed than the last.

“Now we to set them to sail,” Elder Nixon announced.

“Is that how you play Viking funeral?” Blaine asked, following Elder Nixon to the edge of the fountain. The kids were no longer there, having abandoned their toy boat in favor of dragging their grown up to follow a duck with them to the top of a grassy knoll.

“Not exactly. I don't have all the supplies for Viking funeral, and anyway, I'm pretty sure we could get in trouble for playing it here.”

“Oh?” Blaine’s interest was genuinely piqued. It was a feeling that had grown unfamiliar in the preceding weeks. He had managed to feign interest plenty, of course, and a few times he had almost managed to convince himself that he was genuinely engaged in talking to someone or learning something new. But then the black cloud would creep back in, and his brain would get foggy, and everything felt fake and unreal and pointless again.

“You put a birthday candle in the top of each boat and light it,” Elder Nixon said, recreating the motions on one of his paper boats before launching it on the water.

“Oh.” An image of dozens of paper boats floating at night on the same fountain, each topped with a single candle, popped into Blaine’s head. “But that sounds beautiful. Like Japanese water lanterns.” He set two of his own boats on the water.

“It was,” Elder Nixon said. “Except that's not the part we got excited for. Because when the candles burn down, all that's left to burn is the paper. So that was the fun part for us, seeing our entire fleet go up in flames. We would launch our boats toward each other’s to speed the process along. Oh, the beautiful destruction!” Elder Nixon chuckled at the memory.

And, for some reason, Blaine felt himself chuckling, too. He could imagine miniature Elder Nixon and his chubby-cheeked siblings, all looking like little blonde cherubs from the front of an old Victorian greeting card, standing around a poofy plastic pool and cheering on the firy demise of their entire fleet. Maybe it was the incongruity of it. Elder Nixon was so kind and sweet. It was hard to imagine him setting things ablaze for kicks.

“Hey,” Elder Nixon said with a fond smile, “you're laughing.”

“I guess I am,” Blaine said, and stopped.

“Oh no. I ruined the moment.”

“No, you didn't.”

“Yes, I did.”

"No, you really didn't,” Blaine said. There was something inside him that kept tugging him back to a baseline of gloominess, no matter what the people around him did. "None of this is your fault. I mean, I know I have a reputation as a ray of sunshine, but I can't shine all the time. Everything's just been so hard lately.”

“Since I became your companion,” Elder Nixon said.

“Not because you're my companion," Blaine said. “You help make it better than it would be otherwise. You’re patient and kind and you don't judge me. And I want to be more cheerful. I really do. And I thought I would be. But …” Blaine couldn't keep it a secret anymore. It was making everything worse—made him feel like he was sneaking around and had something to hide, and those things felt too close to shame to be any good for Blaine's mental health. He hadn't wanted to put this burden on Elder Nixon—but then again, why was Blaine thinking of it as a burden? Elder Nixon could do what he wanted with it. He could let it bring them closer together as friends, or he could report Blaine to the mission president. It was up to him. It was out of Blaine’s hands. “I just—” Blaine felt tears pushing against his eyes. That was probably a good thing. He hadn’t let himself cry in front of another person since Kurt left. “I miss Elder Hummel a lot.”

Elder Nixon put a hand on Blaine shoulder and gave it a solid pat. “I know. It's tough when a companion you really click with leaves.”

Blaine shook his head. “It's not just that, though. I miss him because I'm in love with him.” And then, because if he was in for a penny, he was in for a pound, he added with urgency, “I'm gay and I fell in love with my companion, and he loves me back, and half the time I just feel really stupid for staying here and not following him to Ohio. And if you need to tell the mission president, you can; I mean, I'd rather it be my own decision, but beggars can't be choosers—and anyway, I don't want to be a burden to you, and I feel like I have been, the whole time we've been working together.”

“You're not a burden, Elder Anderson,” Elder Nixon said, and he hugged Blaine, which was not a thing missionaries usually did in public, but they weren't supposed to have emotional outbursts in public either and, besides, the kids and their grown up were nowhere to be seen right now. “You're my friend. And I'm so glad you told me, because now I can be a better friend to you.”

Imagining what could have happened if the creator dared to dream bigger is fandom’s driving ethos. Whether or not the people behind the scenes expected to have the most passionate bloc of their audience fixate on a queer romance that may or may not have been intentional is irrelevant. When queerness is still on the periphery of society, it’s unsurprising that the relationships fans obsess over and seek to actualize are predominantly queer.

Our Flag Means Death, whose second season is now airing on Max, doesn’t require its fans to dream of the queer possibilities. Instead, it’s that rare breed of work that raises the romantic subtext—typically buried under bromatic jokes or subtle ambiguity—to undeniable text from the very beginning. And when fandoms and creative teams are both on the same page of the same unabashedly queer love story, as is the case for Our Flag, the experience is nothing short of sublime.

Queer media, particularly TV, has entered something of a golden age since the aughts. There are the early mainstream pioneers like The L Word and Will and Grace; the wholesome coming-of-age romcoms like Heartstopper and Love, Victor; and the adaptations taking beloved stories one big step further, like Interview with the Vampire, Good Omens, and Hannibal. There are gritty, inspired-by-real-life dramas like Orange is the New Black and Pose, murderous thrillers like Killing Eve and Orphan Black, raunchy comedies like What We Do in the Shadows and Sex Education, and many more stories featuring queer leads with fully fleshed-out storylines.

But even among these big names, this silly gay pirate show stands out by taking what these shows do best and fulfilling a particular need few have met before. The reasons are myriad: It refuses to use queer subtext as a prop or ransom for audience loyalty. It eschews the will-they-won’t-they dance that positions love as an end rather than a beginning. It defies the trope that you must renounce your past in order to move on. It scoffs at the notion of a ceiling for complex queer characters and relationships in a single show. And it demonstrates that depicting the experiences of queer people (and, just as importantly, people of color) don’t always have to center brutality and trauma—that healing can come from making acceptance the norm and bigotry the butt of ridicule, and that being kind doesn’t necessitate being passive.

As a show that didn’t explicitly market itself as “LGBTQ,” one of Our Flag’s most striking aspects is how it subverts the way this genre typically approaches romance. You could argue that the love story begins when Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) is recognized as the pirate he wants to be—while three-quarters of the way dead—by none other than the dread Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). Or you could say it begins when Blackbeard, a.k.a Ed Teach, is seen, for the first time, as someone who deserves softness and finery by the epitome of softness and finery himself. Or when Stede comforts Ed as he curls up in a bathtub reliving his worst memories. Or when Stede picks roasted snake out of Ed’s beard. Or when Ed gives himself up to the British to save Stede’s life. Or when…

You get my drift. There’s an entire season’s worth of scenes that make up the foundations of a fandom: moments of intimacy and connection that gesture toward the possibility of something more. These are the planks and rigs of a ship sturdy enough to outpace the fleet of fanworks chasing such moments down until feelings are admitted, consummated, and set sailing off into the sunset. In hindsight, Our Flag was undoubtedly heading in this direction. But it wasn't until the most incontrovertible on-screen gesture of romance happened—a kiss—that fans heaved a sigh of relief. Because fandom, for all its capacity to will alternative universes into being, is inherently bound to the media from which it springs, and many have only ever cast queer love as bait.

But with Our Flag, most fans aren’t at all concerned about what direction the story will take. And the key difference is that they trust the creators wholeheartedly.

For many queer fans, it’s a novel experience to interface with a creative team that is not only aware of exactly who the audience is and what they care about, but also proudly and vocally celebrates them. In interviews, producer and lead actor Taika Waititi has stated that he collects fan art on his phone. Vico Ortiz (who plays the nonbinary pirate Jim Jimenez) has shared that fan art encouraged them to get gender-affirming top surgery. Creator and showrunner David Jenkins once remarked that fan discussions are so spot-on, it was as if they had “been in the writers’ room.” And several queer actors on the show have expressed that the fandom has made them feel even more connected to the LGBTQ+ community.

Our Flag is one of the rare cases where fans and creators share the same vision for a given work. There are no calls for the figurative death of the overly originalist author, nor strict separation of the "canon" of the original work from the "fanon" interpretations of the audience. There is no need for fans to dig for subtext, because what they’ve been searching for has been on board with them all along—not as a blink-and-miss-it pantomime or a nothing-left-to-lose Hail Mary, but a queer love story that was intentionally, thoughtfully crafted from the beginning.

Our Flag presents fans with a vibrant world where everything is mostly beautiful and almost nothing hurts—at least, not yet. Fans can surmise the shape of the second act and the close of the third, even if they don’t know exactly how they’ll get there. But with full confidence in the creators, fans have the opportunity to stretch their imagination beyond tallying evidence and righting wrongs—and it makes for a fandom experience less a eulogy at a funeral of another buried gay, more a toast at the most extravagant and absurd cruise-ship wedding to ever grace the seven seas.

We are all on the same page of the same story, and the experiences of everyone involved is so much richer for it. Or, as Stede would say, treasure is the real treasure.

Fandom, like being a pirate, is in many respects a very queer enterprise. It centers on abandoning the rules so you can survive; grabbing every scrap of home you can find and making it your own; sharing the spoils with the people who see and accept you for who you are and who you want to be. Or, in the words of the show’s pseudo-antagonist, Izzy Hands (Con O’Neill), it's about belonging to something—a something that, I believe, could be enough to help you fall back in love with life and the world.

I think often of the scene that first drew me into Our Flag: Stede asks his former wife, Mary (Claudia O’Doherty), what it feels like to be in love. Looking back at it now, I realize her response describes what the experience of being a part of a community a show like Our Flag creates can feel like. Because love, she tells him, is as easy as breathing. It’s understanding each other’s idiosyncrasies and seeing the charm in them. It’s exposing each other to new things and laughing a lot. It’s passing the time so well together.

To every queer fan out there: I hope you find that, too. I hope you can name it without fear. And I hope you will be embraced for that revelation, and all the wonder and joy it brings.

Well, it's still going strong! The ultimate bad bitch of a fandom that refuses to die. The fandom that keeps surviving against all odds when death might be kinder, that keeps resurrecting itself and coming back wrong. And I love it for that.

It's a fandom that is capable of understanding and enjoying complicated characters and themes

The pure LOVE that the Black Sails fandom has for this story and these characters is absolutely palpable when you are reading the posts/metas/artworks/fics/gifs/shitposts etc.

Just thinking about this fandom makes me remember that I really should rewatch the entire series again and dive head first into this fandom and never look back.

Harlots

I had the BEST time of my fandom life in this fandom (I say had because it has kind of slowed down a lot since the ending of the show- but I still daydream about Harlots often- and I still have a few fics in mind for one day- I definitely need to do a giffing my way through a rewatch soon!)

Everyone was so supportive and because it was so small, people reblogged and commented/supported each other's work with maybe greater enthusiasm than I've found in other fandoms. People also supported ships and character fanworks that weren't their favorite which I thought was so lovely. In the spirit of this atmosphere I read a fanfic for a pair that I initially didn't like and ended up loving it!

This fandom LOVES femslash. No but like really really loves it.

16. A tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

In the asoiaf book canon, I love- like LOVE LOVE- that Mance and Rowan are part of the plan to steal Jeyne Poole (thinking she's Arya) from the Bolton’s because they were both (well with Rowan this is not canon just a theory)- like Theon- stolen from their original cultures (Theon was taken from the Iron Islands as a hostage, Mance was taken from the Free Folk by the Night’s Watch, and the theory is that Rowan is an Umber, who was taken by the Free Folk.)

Hi, this is very random but I LOVE your edits!! SO SO much!! And I wanted to ask (if you feel like elaborating but no pressure!) about your editing process (I am a complete newbie). I am in awe of the connections you draw in your edits - do you first choose a song and then try to match the content to it or the other way around? And if you don't mind me asking which program do you use? And how do you get clean audio without the background music? ((I would greatly appreciate your advice if it wouldn't be too much of a burden, wishing you the loveliest of days<3))

hi there!! first off this is so sweet, and I really appreciate hearing that you like my edits!it's always so exciting to get that kind of feedback, esp since video edits arent smth ive done a Lot of or my primary form of fanwork, i guess

For some elaboration - I assume you mean the black sails edits (?), so I'm going to be answering for those. On the whole, I don't have a super well-defined process, so it definitely varies edit to edit, but in general, I tend to work off themes or ideas rather than audio! Especially since I'm not usually working with lyrics, in which case it would be a totally different story.

A lot of my black sails edits specifically are about highlighting a specific theme and how its paralleled over the show, so finding parallels usually is just me trying to remember different scenes which demonstrate the same concept, kind of. I have a file of the whole shows subtitles pasted into one place, so I do a lot of Ctrl+f with keywords (the 'you and i' video was built off literally just that) - and then try to arrange it in a way that makes sense for the BS narrative as well as the point im trying to make in the video. i also really love finding completely different conversations that feel like call and response, and setting them up against each other. Parallels! Contrasts! Etc

I try to work with an audio already in mind, though, generally, just because the flow is kind of determined by that. I didn't for the partners video, and I think it's a bit weaker for it, though i did adjust the music to suit it later. Picking a song if I have a theme in mind is really just going thru my soundtracks playlist, which is like 30% of all music I listen to, and picking smth with a vibe that fits + a pace and length that I think the video will match. (Sometimes I will also just cut the song down a bit)

The program I use is kdenlive, which is an free and open source video editing tool! It's not got quite as many features as smth like davinci resolve, but I find it works for my purposes, which are really just cropping, pasting, and a tiny bit of sharpen/recolour. that said kdenlive has a bunch of other features and options that I simply don't use and also don't know how because I haven't experimented, so its not like snip and move clips around is All you can do with it.

re: the background audios... this one is actually a process lol. i have high qual versions of all the BS eps with 6 channel audio, and ive made versions of each episode where ive isolated the central channel which usually has dialogue. however this channel also will have some slight background music or ambient sounds, so it's not really just the dialogue - but it works for the purposes of the video, where lower sounds like that may get hidden by music anyway. ymmv, it depends scene to scene, but I don't need it to be perfectly clean so it works for me. Ive isolated these channels through ffmpeg, which is a command prompt based editing thing, and isn't difficult to learn but isn't exactly the most user-friendly thing, i guess? However I understand ( @dykementality confirm?) that davinci resolve lets you just isolate audio channels of any clip you're editing, so like, that's an option. i Can give more detailed instructions on ffmpeg, or at least on the code that I use to make files w isolated audio, though honestly I've forgotten how to install ffmpeg (though it can't have been too difficult or I wouldn't have bothered)

1. John Watson - A Study in Scarlet

I mean, yeah, technically he's my best and favourite boy in any iteration, but there's something particularly compelling and heart-melting about his first appearance. Injured and jaded, falling back on his pension and hotels, and then meeting this extraordinary man who seems to know everything and blushes at praise and whom Watson is desperate to figure out. "I have another set of vices when I'm well, but those are the principal ones at present." I would die for him.

2. Horatio - Hamlet

I'm such a sucker for an observer. Toby Schmitz once said that Horatio is a yes-man and not really important to the play, and now I can't watch Black Sails. Holding onto the prince and digging in his fingernails to try and keep him steady, and failing anyway, left to pick up the pieces and tell the tale, a vessel for grief. Jacob Warner was ROBBED by not being given his final speech.

3. Eowyn - The Lord of the Rings

What is there to say? A woman who grieves and fights and helps save the world, and then gets to heal afterwards.

4. Ed Teach - Our Flag Means Death

Speaking of healing: oh my god, please just this man rest... Born and raised in violence, a man in his forties just now being given the space to be soft and vulnerable and loved and happy... Please, I love him so much. He's been hurt so many times, and he just deserves to heal. <3

5. Greta Gill - A League of Their Own (2022)

It was hard to choose for this show, but I am simply too much of a sucker for 'doomed from the start' characters (c.f. number 2 above...). He tried so hard, and he still ultimately failed. But my god, did he try.

7. Inspector Firstname Javert - Les Misérables

I am taking every single adaptation writer by the shoulders and rattling them. What about "mixed-race man raised in poverty and buying into the lie of law=religion=morality at the expense of his own humanity, convinced that he is always-already the Other, who is ultimately so shocked at an act of kindness and mercy that he rethinks his entire life and feels compelled to end it" made you decide to make him a one-track-mind villain? And how is Stars still the perfect song??

8. Sasha Racket - Rusty Quill Gaming

I almost went with Zolf on this one, but y'know what? Sasha........... just Sasha. Again with the "tried so hard" vibe. She went through so much shit and still came out shockingly kind-hearted under all that awkwardness, and she stood by her friends, and she deserved every mote of happiness and contentment that ever came to her. I would kill for her. [Grizzop voice] Please ask me to kill for her.

9. Dave Lister - Red Dwarf

You know what? You know what????? He's a gross little scumbag, and he's the last human being alive, and he's suffered so much at the hands of Sitcom Syndrome, but god, give him any chance to be remarkably kind and he will be. Man has had multiple chances to let Arnold Judas Motherfucking Rimmer die, and he still refuses to, because not even Rimmer deserves that shit. Radical empathy. Ratbag. The embodiment of existential depression. I love him.

10. Victoria Di Loredani - Zofloya; or, The Moor

Silverflint  AU Canon divergence during season 4. Madi really dies in episode 7; Thomas Hamilton is not found in Savannah. The war goes on, bolstered by an enraged Silver, fueled by the Urca gold. During this time of violence and grief, Flint and Silver become all each other has left in the world.

Silverflint   Sometimes one of them will keep the other on the edge for as long as he can stand. There is lots and lots of begging and pleading. There could be fingering and rimming and toys...

Silverflinthamilton  Reunion fic where John finds James and Thomas in their home x nbr of years after s4, then realises he knows Thomas because they spent a month living together in Paris some years before Thomas met James and having a blast. Rogers tries to use to Silver to cause a rift between Madi and Flint, thinking that Madi will trade the treasure for Silver's life while Flint will not. To everyone's surprise, the opposite happens. Madi refuses to trade the treasure while Flint will stop at nothing to get Silver back.

Silverflint   firefighter au: silver keeps accidentally triggering the fire alarm while trying to improve his cooking (an actual fire may or may not be involved) and flint is the ridiculously attractive firefighter who has to deal with it

Silverflint   vigilante au: they're both vigilantes watching over the same area and have a bit of a rivalry going on until they have to team up to take down a new threat.

Silverflint   modern au (amnesia): silver wakes up with amnesia and forgets that he was dating flint before the accident. as far as he remembers, they can't stand each other, and he doesn't understand why flint shows up at the hospital and seems genuinely worried about him. (roles could be reversed--author's choice).

You know, Our Flag Means Death has reawakened my internal conversation about whether canon needs to be "good" to inspire fanworks and shipping and intense fan experiences or whether it's actually better if canon is kinda...questionable in quality.

Now, before I get strung up, let me explain. If you ask me, "Is OFMD good?" I'll automatically say, "Yes, omg, I love it so much!" And I do.

But also...when I rewatch the eps...there's jank, you know? There's something...decidedly janky and imperfect about this show. And like, that's not necessary a BAD THING, is my point. It's a show clearly made with a limited budget, run by people with limited experience (despite Taika's involvement lbr without him it probably wouldn't have gotten made). And the show improves a LOT as the season goes on. Like I feel like I need to warn people of that when I rec the show. There's big signs of learning as they go, as well as possibly saving budget for later eps.

But it's also clearly made with SO MUCH LOVE by people who really care. It's to a pretty great and obvious extent made by outcasts about outcasts, to rephrase that one post by Taika.

And like so many other shows that have inspired love (Star Trek TOS, Old Doctor Who) there's just this heart and strong characters that shine through.

Notwithstanding that they set out to tell a story that hasn't really been told much in Western media, an actual explicit queer romance (I mean many of them but of course the focus of the plot is Stede and Ed.) And on so many levels it was executed well.

But on a level of pure, objective "quality" is it comparable to say, Black Sails (which I consider one of the highest quality shows ever made)? No, of course not. It's not the same genre, it's not the same prestige, it's nowhere near the same budget, and it's not trying to do the same thing. (Except for when it IS, cough ep 10)

But do those two shows rhyme? Yes. Do I have way more desire to consume and create fanworks for Our Flag Means Death than I do for Black Sails? YES.

And yeah, I think it's partly because yanno OFMD was designed with fandom in mind. It references fanfiction IN THE TEXT. And partly because there is jank in there. Imperfect places to fit in fix-its and jam in headcanons. It says "hey we did a whole episode on treasure hunting with a few palms, some sand, and a rubber snake, you can also do whatever you want."

It's not slick and overproduced hollywood nonsense. It's just some people making art in a messy way and being overexcited while they do it. And that's beautiful.
