original request jade leech x gn!reader [tags] – fluff, suggestive [cw] - a tad more explicit compared to the last ones [wc} – 2,875 prompt 18: “Is this normal here?” “Only for the emotionally unavailable folk.” “Ah, so it is.” note - i think i blacked out and woke up to this. jade is just so, aaaaaa!!! a floral inconvenience
Teonanácatl mushroom – In Nahuatl, teonanácatl can be translated to “flesh of the gods” and were sometimes used by the Aztecs as a hallucinogen and aphrodisiac.
Despite your best efforts to not say anything, to not complain, to not even give a hint of what was bothering you, it was obvious to everyone that you had the hanahaki.
It was even more obvious who for, considering you were sprouting up bell-shaped brown capped mushrooms instead of the traditional flowers.
Of course Jade’s favorite mushroom would be one of the psychedelic ones. Of course, you had to accidentally swallow a piece of one when spitting them out.
You could’ve dealt with that, honestly. Strange visions? Check, you got them leading up to every overblot. Distorted vision? Fine, you know Ace’s messed with your vision once or twice while practicing spells. Even the weird sensations every touch, breeze, and vibration in the air caused were somewhat bearable. The magic that seemed to consume the surrounding air made your skin tingle weirdly, you could deal.
What you couldn’t deal with, was how horny they apparently made you feel. Without fail, depending on how much of the mushrooms you managed to swallow before spitting the majority of them out, five to ten minutes you’d feel the effects.
Paired with the psychedelic effects, it was torture. You were overstimulated and on edge constantly. Even without the weird trips, the mushrooms were apparently a potent aphrodisiac.
It left you squirming as Jade, the current bane of your existence, stared at you from across the flight field.
Thankfully, none had come out from your throat today, so you were present and alert for once this week.
“You know Prefect,” Azul spoke up, sitting next to you as the two of you sat out of flight class. You, due to your condition, and him for falling 10-feet off his broom.
“The flower sickness is quite an easy fix, have you not visited the nurse yet?”
You shook your head, watching Floyd hang upside down on his broom, screeching as Jack and Silver attempted to ease him into a soft landing. You snorted as the foot that was hooking him to the broom slipped, making him fall on top of Jack.
“Nah, it’s fine, I don’t think she could deal with the constant lucid trips, last I went she just told me to get this potion for my symptoms, but they’re all flower based!”
Azul raised a brow as he watched you lay on the grass and stretch your limbs until you resembled something of like a starfish.
You groaned, “They all account for like petals, thorns, or pollen messing with your immune system, but not for fungus and spores… I need to just straight up get rid of them.”
“May I offer some advice—”
“For your prices? No the fuck you may not—”
“—as a mutual friend between you and Jade?” You shut your mouth at the mention of the teal-haired man while Azul continued. “The best and quickest fix is to just tell him your true feelings. It’s the one true, guaranteed cure to your sickness.”
“You say that like you're familiar with it.” If you noticed the tips of Azul’s ears turn purple, you didn’t say anything. “Is it really that normal here?”
Azul scoffed, giving you a wry smile. “It’s only for the emotionally unavailable sort of folk.”
“Ah, so at this school, it most definitely is.”
The two of you chuckled while Floyd stomped over to your resting spot, visibly limping.
“Maaaaaan this sucks!” The twin threw himself over Azul, who buckled to the ground under Floyd’s weight.
“Ow! Floyd!”
“Coach Lobster says I sprained my ankle and can’t go to basketball club later!” Floyd whined, wrapping his lanky body around Azul, who was less than amused.
“I’ll be stuck at the dorm, I don’t wanna deal with a whiny Jade!”
He turned his attention to you, sneering. “Hey Shrimpy! Go fix whatever ya did to make Jade upset! He’s been acting like a lovesick brat since ya stopped talkin’ to him, it’s gettin’ real old.”
You scoffed, “I didn’t do anything! And why’s everyone acting like we’re a couple? We’re just friends, sometimes friends don’t talk for a bit!”
“Friends?!” Azul hissed, eye twitching as he gave you an incredulous look. “Some ‘friends’ you are. Based on the sounds I hear coming out of his room late at night, I highly doubt that.”
“We’re friends with benefits!” you cried out, looking behind you to see if anyone noticed or heard your outburst. As you did, Azul and Floyd shared a confused look.
“Friends with…benefits?” Azul asked.
Floyd nodded, also questioning your words. “What’s that?”
Despite your best efforts to explain the concept, the two couldn’t comprehend the idea of casual intimacy with an acquaintance or friend. Apparently it was a strictly human concept, as Floyd put it: “Why’d you wanna do that with someone other than a mate? Merfolk aren’t built like that!”
You left class with more questions than answers. Questions you probably could’ve had answered if you spoke with Jade. It didn’t help that Azul and Floyd kept giving you concerned looks as they quietly spoke with Jade, who kept glancing at you with a neutral expression.
Mostly neutral, his brows were furrowed as he spoke with his brother and friend.
Oh well, a little mystery never hurt no one!
Tumblr media
Stomping over to the Mostro Lounge, you kept looking over your shoulder for Jade. Even with everything Azul and Floyd said, you weren’t mentally prepared for a conversation with him.
You’re sure that when Azul asked you to come to his V.I.P. Room, it was for some ruse to get you and Jade together. But he also mentioned you taking up extra shifts at the bar, and you were always in need of a little extra cash.
However, that would be more interaction with Jade, and you’d rather deal with another bad shroom trip than confront any of your feelings for him. But…money.
“Hey! You!” You tapped the shoulder of one of the lounge employees, who recognized and greeted you with a smile.
“Ah! Prefect!” The purple-haired man smiled. “Azul said he was expecting you! Go right ahead to his office.”
“Thanks!” Walking through the lounge into the hallway leading to the private rooms and Azul’s office, the eerie silence was unsettling.
Usually there’d be at least a few employees walking around, either serving food to one of the reservable rooms or checking in with their housewarden. Even passing the employee lounge made you uneasy, as no one was there despite the lack of dinner rush.
You did make it to Azul’s office with little issue, knocking on the door as you announced, “I’m ‘ere, Azul! Can I come in?
You received no answer. Apprehensively you opened the door, surprised to find it empty. Entering and closing the door behind you, you decided to be nosy and look at what Azul had on his desk while you waited.
He was probably here recently, based on the cup of tea on his desk. The door opened up behind you, so you turned to greet Azul with a wave and smile before freezing.
Really, you should’ve known better than to trust Azul to mind his own business. You curled in on yourself as Jade entered the office, a pleasant smile on his lips he locked the door behind him.
You decided that nonchalant and cool was the best approach in this situation.
You greeted Jade in a polite, monotone voice. “Leech.”
“My, my, Prefect. So cold.” Jade gave you a sad look as he pursed his lips. “We haven’t spoken since our trip two weeks ago, was my company so terrible that it warrants your avoidance?”
His tall frame towered over you as he stalked closer and closer, forcing you backwards until your back hit the desk. You could hear the tea cup and saucer clink as you did. Jade placed his hands on either side of your hips, effectively trapping you against Azul’s desk.
“W-well, I’ve been busy—
“Why, I’ve been absolutely beside myself! We had such a wonderful time camping out those two evenings that I'm left wondering if I did something wrong.”
Jade softly spoke, a mischievous gleam in his gold eye as he leaned down to coo in your ear, “Especially since you, oh, so enjoyed my tongue in your—”
You decided that nonchalant and cool was actually not the best approach, based on the numerous mushrooms popping up from your skin and in your mouth.
Jade whipped his head back, rubbing his chin from where the mushroom smacked into him while popping up at the crook between your chin and neck.
He grinned as more and more bell-capped mushrooms sprouted down your exposed arms and neck, even along your head as they fashioned into a mushroom crown.
You froze, then started hacking as too many mushrooms filled and fell out of your mouth, though you could feel yourself swallow some on instinct. “Shitshitshit, I ate some, oooooh fuck me—”
“I did two weeks ago, you seemed to enjoy it—”
“Shut up! You know that's not what I meant!” You groaned, rubbing your face as Jade leaned back in to place his hands on your hips, rubbing small circles.
“Heh-heh, I know. You must forgive me my dear, you are entirely too easy to rile up.” He grabbed your hands so that Jade could make eye contact with you, smiling a bit softer at your red face.
“It’s your fault you know!” You huffed, frowning (or pouting in Jade’s vision) up at him. “You and your stupid mushrooms…”
“Oh? I beg to differ.” You yelped as Jade lifted you like a rag doll and sat you on the desk. At this angle, Jade didn’t need to strain his neck as much to lean down.
“I’d argue that this entirely your own doing. After all, nothing was preventing you from speaking to me other than your own ego.”
“That’s not—” you angrily huffed, half-heartedly shoving Jade. “That’s NOT it and you know it.”
The eel mer frowned, a rare annoyed expression on his features. He took a deep breath, reaching for your hands to softly and tenderly draw circles into your palm. Jade tended to do this when his mind was full of thoughts, tracing random shapes into your skin.
He was especially fond of doing so after your late night meet ups: bare bodies flush against one another in an afterglow as he lulled you to sleep with sweet words, tracing out his name and hearts against your back.
If you thought too much into it, sometimes you think he was tracing your first name with his last, usually done after a particularly rough night.
You didn’t want to think too much into it though, all those nights. Jade was simply indulging your soft heart.
“I don’t, actually. Can you imagine my ire when my beloved partner not only started sprouting psilocybe mexicana, but it was from hanahaki. Do you know the implications of that to me?”
“Look, I’m sorry that I’m sooooo emotional and am ruining your ‘cool’ and ‘intimidating’ reputation!” You cried out, pushing his hands off of yours to cross them, looking to the side.
“I didn’t mean for my feelings to get so out of control. The first rule to being friends-with-benefits is to not catch feelings, and I broke it.”
You shrugged as you continued.
“I had them before, but I thought that if we just got involved casually, I’d get over them eventually…it’s not my fault you talk and act so sappy…like you want me to fall more in love or something…”
Jade was silent, which in itself wasn’t unusual for him. What was, was the troubled, nearly distraught look on his face. You’d be annoyed at how pretty he still was if the expression didn’t freak you out.
“Most likely because I was under the impression that we were courting. You are aware that I have been addressing you as my mate for several months now, yes?”
Time froze, though it might have been the effects of the mushrooms starting to hit. Or a combination of the shrooms and your brain trying to process the words that just left Jade’s mouth.
Mate. Floyd called you his brother’s mate. He’s actually been calling you his mate.
“What?” You squeaked out, voice meek and tiny. “Mate? Like, your partner-type mate? Like, this is the person I’m marrying-type mate?”
Jade let out a chuckle, cutting the distance between you until his face was right up to yours.
Startled, you grasped on the lapels of his uniform, trying to steady yourself as you leaned back. Jade’s arms were splayed on the table as he once again trapped you against the desk.
Though this time, intentionally you’re sure, he settled himself between your legs as you, subconsciously mind you, loosely wrapped your legs around his hips.
Jade smirked as he watched you cough out another handful of mushrooms, though he was disappointed to see none were bitten this time around.
“Allow me to, how do you humans say? Ah, yes, open your eyes to the situation.”
Jade grabbed your chin, forcing you to make eye contact with his stern gaze. “I do not involve myself with other people to such an…intimate extent casually, especially as a merperson.”
“This thing you call ‘friends with benefits’? As a concept it’s entirely human. Merfolk? If we see something, if we like it, then we make it ours and you?”
Jade chuckled, leaning down and taking your earlobe into his sharp teeth.
“Little human~” he purred. “I made you mine the moment we blessed my bed with your sweet cries.”
You shivered from the points of his teeth as he tugged, sighing as he let go, up until his lips met your pulse point at the crook of your neck, suckling down. You could feel his pleased hum vibrate through your spine as you mewled in response.
Heat pooled in your belly while your skin felt like it was simultaneously on fire and freezing, though you couldn’t be sure if it was the effects of the mushroom or Jade.
“J-Jade, stooOOoOop i-it,” despite your protests, you tilted your head to offer the rest of you like a present, little gasps escaping your lips as his lips trailed down, following the mushrooms that adorned your clavicle.
“What if Azul o-or your—o-ooh fuck—or your brother walk in?”
Jade leaned back with a closed mouth smile, admiring the red marks adorning your neck.
“Let them, so that every time you forget what you are and what you mean to me, the image of my mate bent over this desk is burned through their heads, so that it implores them to remind you of what you are.”
Pushing you until you laid flat on your back, Jade hovered over you with a grin and beheld your flushed face.
You slid your hands from his chest to loop around his neck, bringing Jade down to meet your lips before he stopped.
You furrowed your eyebrows at him, eyes widening as he stuck his tongue out to reveal a singular mushroom. He must have hidden it under his tongue after swiping it from your neck earlier.
“Wait, Jade!” You gasped as he bit and swallowed the fungus. “It’s a psychedelic—”
“And an aphrodisiac, I’m aware.” He hummed, a pleased look on his face.
“Land flora is so fascinating, I’d hoped to introduce this one to you over the summer, to experience it together, back home in a nice, private little grotto.”
Jade pressed his lips to yours, surprisingly gently, as you returned it with a growing intensity. His right hand reached up between your embrace to undo the buttons of your shirt.
“Oh well, I suppose we can share an experience here. Isn’t the thought of someone walking in exhilarating?”
Once your shirt was open, and your chest exposed, Jade took the tips of his fingers between his teeth and yanked his pristine white glove off. He trailed his exposed hand, starting with a squeeze at the base of your neck, and slowly gliding down.
His pupils were slowly blowing out as the effects of the mushroom started to take hold, his breath increasing as you grew more and more needy from the aphrodisiac.
“Jade, please~” you tried again to yank him down for another kiss, this time succeeding as your lips clashed against one another.
“Jade…I need…”
“Shhh. I got you.” Jaed cooed, hips grounding against yours as your kiss intensified. “I got you Y/N, my little human, my pearl, my mate—”
“Hey Jade, are you two almost done talking, I’d like my office back—ACK!” Azul shrieked at the sight of you two over his desk, Floyd popping his head out from around the now open door.
“Hmm? Ewwwww!” Floyd made gagging sounds as you quickly redressed yourself, Jade looking amused at the situation.
“You’re supposed to talk it out, not get it on! Go somewhere else! It’s bad enough that I can hear you through the walls, you’re like three rooms down from mine!”
Jade let out a chuckle, wrapping his hand around your waist once you were up and buttoned up.
“Of course, I wouldn’t want to bother you. Come, my pearl.” You were dragged out of the room, wincing at the other two with an apologetic look.
You apparent ‘mate’ was guiding you to the exit of the lounge, to the direction of the pools.
As he leaned down to whisper into your ear, you could feel his grip tighten on your hip, causing a pleasurable buzz to crawl up your body, your lucid high growing stronger.
“Why don’t we see how my merform handles the mushrooms, and then see how you can handle me, hmm?”

when i was a teenager on tumblr in 2012-2013 i briefly had a moment when i was obsessed with dennys’s trashy and liminal nature and i collected weird and horrific dennys stories. dennys was inherently funny to me. and so when dennys made their own cursed shitposting blog i was pissed that dennys stole the posting about dennys game from me, and i deleted all my posts about the restaurant chain. i remember the last night of true dennys based joy was not long after the dennys blog went up but i hadnt quit the dennysposting game yet. my bedroom had flooded and so i was sitting in the kitchen and reading asks about food poisoning and roaches and such to occupy my time til my room went back to normal. but it never went back to normal. my room became the home of black mold and fungus, where i coexisted with the toxic spores and unceremoniously scraped ear-shaped mushrooms off my wall for about 5 years until i moved out in mid 2018. after the dennys jig was up, i pivoted hard into my vaporwave phase and also spent a bit less time on tumblr in general due to spending more time on fandom-specific sites. i also was spending more of my time at home laying in bed lowkey hallucinating and highkey believing i was a dead person. this was quite confusing because at that point science had come to the conclusion that black mold couldnt produce enough toxic spores at once to cause a person to experience serious psychological symptoms. so of course this meant to me, a toxin-addled teenager, that the hallucinations and such i was experiencing were not explained by science and thus potentially real. this disturbed me when i had the time to worry about it, which only became a major issue for my quality of life after i graduated high school and all i did was work at a coffee shop and play minecraft in my mold room. it wasn’t until after i moved out in 2018 that i found out that scientists reversed their opinion on mold toxins again in like 2017 or something. now its widely acknowledged that that shit makes people have all manner of mental symptoms. at the time though i was fairly willing to accept that the powers that be forgot to take me out of my body after i died. i felt a bit bad for spreading so much shit talk about denny’s back in the day since the better dennys in my town was incredibly accommodating to the massive amount of allergies in my family, but the other dennys functionally across the street from it served such horrible food that the impression could not be overcome.

I was looking up poisonous mushrooms, for foraging purposes, and I stumbled into one called 'Ergot fungus', and I thought, wait, I know this word, I've heard it somewhere. It went on to say it causes 'ergot poisoning' and it clicked - ergot poisoning from Midnight in Salem!
It turns out ergot fungi is a fungus that infects rye, wheat, barley and other cross-species of cereal, it grows inside of them like a little black worm. Then if the cereal is consumed, it poisons people. It does cause psychosis, seizures, migraines, nausea, vomiting, but the long term effects are as bad as gangrenes - skin falling off, loss of body tissue, limbs rotting and falling off, and in the end, death. Midnight in Salem did NOT impress just how intensely deadly this is.
There were outbreaks of ergot poisoning in the middle ages, and in the 19th century, and the effects were horrifying. People eventually figured out that ergot can be sterilized by placing the yield in a brine solution, deep plowing the infected fields and rotating crops.
There's an interesting article on wikipedia discussing whether the symptoms of ergotism were blamed on the witches during the witch trials in Salem, all of the symptoms were mentioned in the records. However it was concluded that the symptoms were already known by then, and would be recognizable as ergot poisoning, so it was not the case. It was interesting to find Salem directly on the 'ergot poisoning' wikipedia page!
It's making more sense now why Nancy was asking around who was eating cereal-based products and why ergot was used as a plot device, it was after all, connected to witches and to the history of Salem, and also a big problem in the middle ages.
Now would ergot also infect water from some infected plants being put into the water supply? I have no clue, that part is a bit far-fetched, but I am glad the poisoning wasn't as extreme as it could have been. Insane to want to revive such an awful plague.
Sorry for talking about Midnight in Salem! I still play it for Halloween so I wanted to share the extra knowledge I just gathered, getting real-life knowledge from Nancy Drew games still is one of my favourite things.

Sol/Lee's One Stop Source For 'There Are Mushrooms Growing In My Skull' Updates
Hey guys, I'm briefly able to be upright and at the computer so I'm going to try and do a short little timeline of the past few weeks that I can just link to people. It'll be my temporary pinned post and I'll keep updating it, so check back here if you want the latest news.
Last Update 7:30pm 7/25
Current status: Pain briefly 12/10, back to 8/10, difficulty eating, difficulty sleeping, nauseous, severely dizzy, moderate to severe hearing loss, hole in both ear drums
TWs for: medical, hospital, medical malpractice, infection, fungus/parasite, suicide/suicidal ideation, body horror
The evening of Sunday, July 10th, I notice some tenderness in my right ear. I ignore it, assuming a scratch, and sleep with earplugs as usual. By the night of Monday, July 11th, the pain has worsened so I elect to go to urgent care the next day, presuming I have developed an ear infection.
Tuesday, July 12th, I go to the urgent care for the first time. My discomfort is minor, the doctor prescribes me antibiotic ear drops.
Thursday, July 14th, I return to the urgent care. My right ear is worsening and the infection has spread (I am corrected firmly that it has not "spread") to my left ear. I am concerned about the worsening symptoms but am told it's only been two days. The second nurse examines my ears and says that the right ear is an outer ear infection and the left is an inner, so I will need antibiotic pills on top of the ear drops, which I am to continue using.
Condition continues to worsen, however, I maintain course, cancelling my birthday plans and waiting for the meds to kick in. In the meantime, I am unable to sleep due to the pain, and haven't slept more than a few hours in a row since Sunday night. My jaw can't fully close and I am on a liquid diet. Near midnight July 19th, Tuesday, one week after initial appointment, I notice strange discharge. Against all good advise, I prod a q-tip gently into my ear. It comes back covered in black spores. Terrified, I check the other side. Black spores. Frantic and suspecting my ear infection is not bacterial but fungal, I make another appointment at an urgent care.
July 20th I go to see my third nurse practitioner, blackened q-tip in hand. I am concerned about the worsening symptoms but am told it's only been seven days. However, the nurse also seems concerned and does an exam. She says the blackness does not look like fungus, but like "some kind of black scabbing." She admits she's never seen a fungal infection, or this, before, and refers to me to an ENT, saying it's out of her league and I need to see a specialist right away. She takes a sample to send off for culture. She prescribes me a different kind of antibiotic ear drop to use in the meantime.
I immediately begin calling the recommended ENTs, however I am quickly informed that Medicaid does not accept referrals from urgent care and I need to see a primary care doctor in order to get a referral. At this point, I have what I believe to be wholly untreated fungus growing in my ears, and am getting frantic as both the pain and my psychological distress worsens. I call my primary's office and leave a message. They call back, and I explain the situation, however, the soonest appointment my primary has is August 1st, 12 days away. I explain the situation again and ask if she can just recommend me to an ENT without seeing me, based on the urgent care referral. I am told she cannot. Frantic and frustrated, I tell the clerk I'll just have to go to the ER instead. She hesitates, and then suggests I just see "any doctor" who can see me fast enough. I eagerly agree, having been under the impression due to previous experience that doctors at this particular practice have to have "new patient" appointments before they can see you for something like this. Mercifully, the clerk schedules me to see another doctor in the office the afternoon of the next day.
By this point the pain is excruciating, and I am unable to sleep or eat. My mother is now deeply concerned by all this and drives me to the doctor herself as I'm becoming delirious from pain, lack of food and lack of sleep, and am certainly in no condition to drive. July 21st, I arrive at the new doctor. I'm examined again; according to my appointment records both ear drums are fully obscured due to brown debris and thick white discharge. The doctor seems alarmed by the state of my ears. After leaving for a moment to look at some medical books, the doctor returns and tells me it looks like I have a fungal ear infection. She says it was likely exacerbated by the antibiotics and to stop them immediately and not start the new prescribed one (which wasn't ready due to several pharmacy delays). She tells me on no uncertain terms I need to see an ENT immediately to clean the debris and fungus out of the ear, and prescribes me antifungal ear drops. The medical assistant comes to me after a long wait and tells me that she's gotten me an August 16th appointment with an ENT, but knows it's not good enough and will continue trying, and call me when she finds something better. Thanking them both, I leave, get a bit of food, and head home.
The pharmacy informs us that they do not have the antifungal in stock and it will need to be mail ordered. That evening, the doctor's assistant (ilu Melissa) informs me she's gotten me an appointment on Monday morning with an ENT just over the state border that can accept my insurance anyway. (Finding doctors that take Unicare/Medicaid is a major struggle.)
Overnight Thursday, the pain continues to worsen. At this point it has been severe for days and is growing steadily worse. It feels like my head is full of glass shards, the pain is hot and burning and scratchy and stabby. I feel as though every canal in my head is full of acid and steel wool. The pain has spread into my throat and swallowing is becoming difficult to impossible. I briefly lose consciousness early in the morning, blacking out from the pain, and am relieved, praying that I'm either dying or entering a coma so I can escape the pain. I awaken later to even worse pain, and begin frantically calling every emergency room and pharmacy in the state, asking for help and trying to find anyone that has the drops in stock.
Around 8:30AM I make the decision to go to the ER, despite having been warned there's possibly not anything that they can do. I am afraid the fungus is in my throat as well and even if I get the ear drops, it will grow there untreated until Monday when I can go to the ENT. An increasingly frantic mother drives me to the ER on the morning of July 22nd.
I arrive at the ER slightly delirious from pain and lack of sleep. I'm checked in immediately as they have empty rooms (thank g-d) and am seen relatively quickly. The doctor is unable to tell if there's anything in my throat as he doesn't have a scope, I am informed that an ENT could tell and tell him that I have an ENT on Monday. He is relieved I managed to get in to see one so quickly. After discussing courses of action with me, we settle on giving me an oral antifungal to try and keep any possible infections from worsening before I can see the ENT.
Towards the end of the emergency room visit, the pain killers (I'd been on 600mg of ibuprofen + 500mg tylenol constantly for the past two weeks) I was on were wearing off, and I began to, for lack of a better word, "freak out," pushing and clawing at my ears as the pain worsened and worsened. I was, thank g-d, given narco (tylenol+hydrocodeine) for the pain and discharged.
Friday morning still, I stumble to the car and am driven home by my mother, who's Pretty Freaked Out as I slip in and out of consciousness, groaning in pain as I wait for the medication to kick in. Everything is a black and red, sharp haze full of barbed wire, and I hope again that I'm dying.
We manage to get me home and into bed. I lay stock still, gripping my mother's hand, as it makes the pain lessen. Slowly, the pain medicine begins to kick in, taking the sharpest edges off the pain. Some birthday presents from friends have arrived, lightening my mood somewhat, and mom manages to get me to eat. I pass out for a bit, and wake up to a call from the pharmacy. My meds are ready: all of them. I stay conscious long enough to tell my mother, and then pass out again immediately (probably thanks to the hydrocodeine lol). I wake up at 4pm to medicine, which I take immediately, and then pass back out.
At time of writing it's 5AM July 23rd. I've had two rounds of oral anti-fungals and two rounds of ear drop anti-fungals. The pain is still present but is slowly lessening. It's well below "kill me now, put me down like a tortured dog" levels, which I appreciate greatly. I've been able to stand up to get to the computer to type this. I still can't really hear out of either ear (the sound is muffled, more than when I'm wearing ear plugs. all I can hear is my own heartbeat). However, despite a bunch of pretty wild side effects (I cried for almost 18 hours straight, even while unconscious! it wasn't out of pain, the crying felt like relief), I am definitely improving, although I can't tell which medicine is doing it (it's probably all of them).
UPDATE 6PM July 23rd: I'm currently oozing a pretty insane amount out of my right ear. It is brown and disgusting but probably a good sign. It hurts more in that ear too, probably due to the oozing. Sometimes I wake up feeling pretty good and can move around, but within abt 30 minutes of activity I get very sleepy again. Think I'm continuing on the upward swing, though, and plan to just. Keep sleeping.
UPDATE 3:30AM July 24th: Currently in a rough patch because the ER doctor didn't actually give me enough pain meds to last til my doctor appt. They're every 4-6 hours; if I'd taken them every 4 I'd have run out halfway thru Saturday. Even taking them every 6, I'd run out Sunday night. It's frustrating to because there were 9 pills, you can tell he did the math to see exactly how few he could get away with giving me to "get me" to Monday. There are a lot of complicated reasons for this but they mostly come down to "legislated eugenics in the guise of fighting the 'opioid epidemic.'" So anyway I'm rationing out about 2.5 hours of agony between pills to make them stretch. I'm not very happy about it.
Anyway, in a lot of pain. Dizzy. My hearing is getting a lot worse, I can barely hear anyone anymore. Being temporarily hard of hearing is more annoying than genuinely inconvenient but it'd really suck if I had to go anywhere. I can hear inside my own head just fine so I think it's just be blocked. Did I mention I'm dizzy? So, so dizzy. Both ears expelling a lot of unpleasant brown liquid that I assume is that color bc it's dead fungus. If the doctor does clean out my ears Monday I feel like it's gonna be INSANE.
The horror of the situation has settled into an unreal sort of mundanity as the constant naps make a few days feel like a few weeks. My friends are making a lot of jokes, mostly about Resident Evil. Crow has named the infestation "Steve." I can feel it becoming just one more thing that's gone wrong with me. IDK what it says about me or my ability to cope that I can experience my biggest lifelong fear and wind up just tired about it within a few days. I guess if you almost die enough times, your brain becomes slippery to the trauma. If I try to think about the reality of it, my brain just turns into a completely smooth orb and it slips off to the side. I may be describing PTSD. Oh well.
UPDATE 4:30PM July 24th: The pain has definitely gone down in my ears. It's still present and stabby but it's getting more manageable, and just in time since I've been running out of pain pills. I think it might have been those pills that were making me so hungry, also, because now that I've been weaning off of them my appetite is shot and it's a struggle to eat again, which is worrying my mom. I'm going to try and make myself eat after I finish writing this.
My hearing is definitely getting worse, although I do hear some mysterious popping from inside my ears sometimes that is probably drainage or something. It is really hard to hear; if I'm talking or breathing or my stomach is gurgling I can't hear a damn thing coming in from the outside world. It's mostly annoying because I have to keep asking people to repeat themselves.
ENT is tomorrow morning, so the next update you guys see from me will probably have a lot of info. Pray for me or sacrifice a goat in my name or whatever it is yall do!
UPDATE 1PM July 25th: This'll be a long one so buckle up. It's also going to be kinda gross. There won't be a tl;dr but I'll try to emphasize important bits. So I went to the ENT. It was part of a huge complex and I was sent to the wrong building and had to hoof it half a mile to the right one, but it was fine other than wearing me out. The campus was very pretty and had good sidewalks, at least.
The ENT saw me basically instantaneously, took one look in the ears, and began to vacuum. Yes, vacuum. It was one of the single most bizarre and disturbing sensations of my life. I could feel liquid, yes, but also somewhat large chunks getting pulled out of my ears. Occasionally one would be too large for the vacuum and she'd have to pause to de-clog. As I expected, it wasn't exactly a one stop fix, but it was able to clear things out enough for us to at least see a bit more of what was up.
Some of it's what we already know: I have a pretty severe fungal infection. It is in there. They have set up a home base in my skull and it's going to be a long process to get them out, anti-fungals and weekly vacuuming for as long as it takes, which will probably be a while. I personally expect to be at this for at least a month.
Bad news: I have a brand new hole in my left eardrum. At some point during the infection, it ruptured (no wonder I was in such intense pain). That could (and probably already has) lead to complications such as the fungus spreading places we really would rather it not go. We'll be monitoring it closely, and I'm following up with my primary (or rather, Dr. James, since she knows what's up already) to see what I can do to keep an eye on potential infections in my sinuses, nose, or like, yknow. Blood, bones, and brain. Ideally it won't come to that. Ideally, the rupture will heal on its own, but for right now all we can do is keep an eye on it. Once the infection is fully gone, then we can talk options.
My ears are wild due to the amount that was sucked out and the amount that's still in. Things are lose in there and shifting around and blockages are changing sides and one side is clearing and then clogging and the other is clogging then clearing. It'll probably only continue to be weird as I continue to treat it with anti-fungals that will kill and knock more loose. The end result is that I'm very off-balance and extremely disoriented, unable to tell what direction any sounds are coming from.
So I guess I do have a tl;dr for you: tl;dr, I still have fungus in my head and I will probably for a while yet. I'll keep updating this post, maybe not daily, but regularly, whenever there's an update. Honestly I think it will do me good to have a place to organize my thoughts, although after this I'll start doing updates in a reblog instead of just making this top post longer and longer.
This has been a pretty traumatic experience for me, just due to it being one of my personal biggest fears, and also just the ongoing anxiety of not knowing the answers to big questions like "will my hearing come back fully" and "are there any mushrooms in very important places." I appreciate the support, and some ongoing gentleness as I continue to deal with this while also starting school back up and stuff.

Rhizopus & Mucor
Both belong under the umbrella term, mucorales. These are bread moulds naturally on fruit and bread that we breathe in and out without much issue particularly if immunocompetent, but in some immunocompromised it causes rapidly fatal and progressive disease: mucormycosis. Due to the weakened immune system.
Tumblr media
Spores released either land on skin or into blood via open wounds, then deposit tehre, invading local vessels, thrombosing them and cutting off supply. this rapidly leads to ischaemia and necrosis. Dead tissue.
Now for a Case Report. This one in Frontiers of Medicine. A 35 yo man with diabetes presents with a facial rash, that rapidly progresses to an eschar and ulcer. To note, there are graphic images in the link of his face.
This was initially associated with nasal discharge and epistaxis. Diagnosis was initially a peridontal infection which did not resolve with standard antibiotics for this, similarly he was next diagnosed with uncomplicated, stock standard cellulitis (usually staph or strep pyogenes caused). Both treatments failed.
eventually he was diagnosed with mucormycosis, but by then he had extensive damage to his face, the subcut tissues, muscles and facial bones. He also had significant weight loss, fevers, splenomegaly and thrombosis.
To muddy the waters, he was concurrently diagnosed with a T cell lymphoma but the authors also picked up Rhizopus.
What is Rhizopus? (also related to mucor, another mucorales) It's a fungi, more specifically an opportunistic pathogen commonly associated with diabetics (esp poorly controlled) and the immunocompromised (in particular solid organ transplants, see further case report in resources below, HIV, malnutrition, haematological malignancies - eg leukaemias).
Also associated with steroid use, form of immunosuppression so has been seen in severe COVID patients requiring dexamethasone (Rare though).
As a mould it likes the acidotic states in DKA and iron, so any iron overload states as well.
Why poorly controlled diabetics - it becomes an immunocormposed state in and of itself. The sugars suppress local inflammatory responses like neutrophil chemotaxis or phagocytosis etc. You can however, get chronic forms too. So don't rule it out if it's not wildly acute. These occur over weeks, slowly. Considering it's a mould, it's particularly "prolific" in hot weather and warm/hot climates.
Classically it is an infection that affects the face, parasinuses, nose and even the brain. You'll often hear the term rhinocerebral with it.
Consider it if you see discolouration around the face and definitely if you see a necrotic eschar. Actually, any black spots, fevers, rash, call ID urgently. Unsurprisingly, it is also called the black fungus.
Tumblr media
Is also possible to have it affect the skin (particularly in IVDU and in burns), lungs and GI (more rare). IN lung involvement symptoms are typical for the organ - SOB, fevers, chest pain, haemoptysis. in GI: nausea/vomiting/GIB.
Thrombosis can occur as a complication as it invades the blood vessels.
In brain involvement from disseminated disease, expect confusion and altered state if not reduced GCS.
It's also been recently featured in the fungi podcast by the Curbsiders. Which is worth a listen.
It's filamentous and has hyphae.
You'll also hear the term mucormycosis = which just refers to the disease process that is rapidly fatal. Mortality is 30-70% of rhinocerebral cases, 90% in disseminated and 100% in AIDs --numbers from StatPearls. Survival improves with antifungals and surgery to 70%.
Early diagnosis and intervention is essential, as illustrated in the case report above. but is rare, so not infrequently missed.
It's also missed, as early symptoms are very non specific depending on how it affects the host. You can simply get lethargy, headache and eye pain. Blurry vision too, or simply epistaxis and rhinorrhoea.
Image from Wiki
Tumblr media
Now that you know the clinical presentation and the increased risk groups to think of this diagnosis in,
How do you confirm your suspicions?
investigations:
Tumblr media
It's associated with neutropaenic states and one hypothesis is acidosis in diabetics with poorly managed sugars (so really unwell). No serology (as compared to other bugs), would come up in fungal cultures and on tissue biopsy. key words on biopsy: Ribbon like hyphae branching at 90 degree angles.
Tumblr media
Also from wiki, that suggests it looks like Moose antlers.
Tumblr media
Pathologists will also note or look for necrosis and haemorrhage.
Blood cultures rarely pick up it, so consider it if they're unwell and culture negative.
On imaging - gold standard in rhino cerebral is MRI but CT is most accessible and fast. Looking for signs of blood vessel invasion and reverse halo or less specific halo sign.
Reverse halo per radiopaedia: ground glass within a consolidated crescent shape.
From radiopaedia:
Tumblr media
Okay, this sounds both difficult to pick up and investigate. No magical PCR or serology.
Pro tip from stat pearls: just maintain a high index of suspicion in anyone with increased risk or risk factors. Biopsy tissue quickly particularly if necrosis is apparent. Early detection method is unsurprisngly CT --> we all seem to have a low threshold for this, but looking for hyperdensity (mucosal thickening) and erosion of the facial bones.
Also essential is the age old adage that most clinicians follow --> empirical therapy for the most common organisms, close monitoring/observations. then failing that, broaden the differentials and keep investigating or altering treatment quickly.
Treatment:
The strong stuff. Liposomal Amphotericin B for 4-6 weeks (the long duration) as it is highly invasive/progressive. Alternatives; itraconazole.
You may also hear of hyperbaric O2 therapy, which aids the neutrophils to kill the fungi. Also in stat pearls
Surgical debridement after antifungal therapy with washout depending on extent of damage.
Sources used for post:
Case reports, wiki and radiopaedia as above And largely Statpearls --> there is much more further detail and more to read on differentials and complications.
I'll try to use free resources as much as possible.
Another Case Reports of interest include: NEJM - lengthy one reminding all to consider this diagnosis in an unexplained rash in an immunocompromised host.

On the topic of fish diseases, here's a few fun ones that might be interesting to modify to fit CD. NO PRESSURE but food for thought
Columnaris: bacterial infection that can cause white cotton lookin growths in the gills and mouth, discoloration, lesions along the body
Dropsy: kidneys fail and the fish starts accumulating fluid and puff up. The scales raise like a pinecone. The swim bladder fails and the fish can't float/sink at will
Fish fungus: an injury gets infected and grows cottony fungus along the old scars
Velvet: a rusty flaky scaly lookin disease with black spots appearing amid the rusty flaky scales
Anchor worms: worms attack fins/tail and can be seen hanging off/trailing from the fish
There's treatments to everything but if untreated can be deadly, and super fuckin contagious in a lot of cases. Consider? A ship on a hunting trip happens to bring an infected sailor on board, and the symptoms show up when they're days away from help. Maybe it's standard practice to have a first aid kit of cures on board, maybe they don't have cures on board and the crew is struggling to make it back to land before they all die :)
Just food for thought
OOOHHH YOUR BRAIN IS LITERALLY SO MASSIVE FOR THIS ACTUALLY im putting all of these ideas in my mouth

For the corruption in brink was there a particular disease or illness you researched in preparation for writing it? Is this the same disease inspiration as the sculk in present/future fics?
For the corruption I did a lot of research into black mould, and specifically illnesses and symptoms brought on by exposure to black mould!! General illness, along with things like eye irritation/infection, rashes/discolouration/agitation of the skin, excessive bile and congestion, and violent coughing fits, can all be symptoms of exposure to black mould, and I just sort of twisted and exaggerated a lot of this symptoms to a more eldritch extent for Brink with Rae and Ominious Bane.
The vomiting purple and black bile was much more horror-trope inspired than based on any real disease, that very visceral representation of purging the body of something evil.
As for the sculk in Brink: yes and no!
To avoid having it be too similar to the corruption plotline in Brink, the sculk in those fics isn’t going to be as much of a focus as it was in canon, but I do have some fun ideas for it, and it does take a lot of inspiration from the same kind of mould and illnesses!! There’s also a good deal of inspiration from “Ophiocordyceps unilateralis” (the zombie ant fungus) that I would love to explore moving forwards with that plotline!
(As further context, I think that’s the zombie fungus stuff from The Last of Us?? I haven’t actually played and/or seen enough of The Last of Us franchise to comment further in this, but like,,, that stuff, for context-)

This is inspired by those MLP Infection AUs that have been popping up recently.
chartamalady
(derived from the Latin word of papyrus[/paper]; Charta and the Synom of Disease; Malady)
It's a zombie-like "virus" that spreads across Paper Robloxia, especially infecting those that have the paper element in them. It is caused by a fungus that has spores that spreads via air, bodily fluids like blood and saliva, and touch.
Basically once someone is infected they shall change their personality and routine without their control before getting the final symptoms where they lose full control of their deteriorating paper bodies by the virus, along with becoming highly infectious.
Symptoms:
Early infection: slight discoloration of the entire body, a cough, and an itch that starts to grow. Most of the symptoms can be misdiagnosed to be other viruses like the common low and sketchy pox.
One month after infection: development of symptoms that are similar to paper defects you can find in real life. This includes but is not limited to: Pinholes, Black spots, Stripes, and Bugs. This is where their personalities and routines start to change. Though it's slow at first.
3 months: these symptoms vary from species to species, but all species share the same symptoms of body deterioration. Some of the other symptoms that vary from species to species include: Horn/Halo rot, feather itch and loss, Cardboard Mania, infection to the eyes and optic nerve, rust, and purposeful malnutrition or overfeeding.
Full loss of body control and spore release from the fungus.
There isn't really a cure yet, but treatment in the early stages(with the personalities starting to change is the latest treatment can start) can make the fungus leave and find a new host
I will probably draw examples of how the main cast are dealing with the outbreak if I have the time like on my break during work today, Idk.

The Unfair Folk and Twisted History
---
Why Fairy Ring mushrooms used to suck
Fairy ring mushrooms were considered really bad luck in Medieval Europe because it was believed that if you stepped into the circle the fairies would scoop your soul out and make off with it. Nobody would know it had happened. Not even you. You wouldn't have a clue you were essentially operating on battery power until you just keeled over for some reason.
How the stroke got its name
The word 'stroke' doesn't just cover the medical affliction. It's an archaic term for a blow, or a hit. What we now know as having a stroke was once believed to be an attack from the Fair Folk, as the term elf-stroke was used for a while. It eventually got shortened to just 'stroke'.
Changeling children
You remember the myths of the fairies stealing human children and leaving one of their own in the stolen child's place? That led to a lot of infanticide, but where it gets REALLY creepy is when one realizes that some of the indicators of a child being a changeling match up with autism symptoms...
How paranoia killed a third of Europe's population
Remember the witch craze in the Dark Ages? How everybody's grandmother got accused of witchcraft and so many people died? What you probably don't realize is that it extended to cats. All cats. ALL cats. Not just black cats, but cats in general were believed evil and killed off. This led to a nuclear explosion in the rat population, because you know what happens when you remove any prey species' main predator... And the rats coming off of trader ships were like "Holy shit, they're doing WHAT to your cats?! Grab our luggage, honey! We're moving in!" And what comes with rats? Fleas! Lots of fleas! And the rats coming off the trader ships had real nasty fleas, and THOSE fleas bore the Black Plague. See where I'm going? More rats, more fleas...
Bad bread, ball-tripping and Salem rye
There's a not-crazy hypothesis that the Salem Witch Trials took place because of bad bread. See, in Salem they ate mostly (if not all) rye bread, and rye is prone to a fungus called ergot. Ergot contains a diluted form of the active ingredient in LSD, and it builds up in the system of whoever eats it. Throw in some ignorance and a lot of paranoia, and...
---
Or am I wrong? They certainly don't cover this stuff in History class...

Sinusitis Relief with Home Remedies | MedyBlog
Tumblr media
Fighting with sinusitis is about maintaining a balance between infection and immunity. Our body can fight out the infection in acute sinusitis with good immunity. When the body does not control acute sinusitis, it progresses to chronic sinusitis. Immunity alone cannot fight chronic sinusitis. Our immunity is the only fighter against any infection, and antibiotics or antifungal are weapons that empower our immunity.
Home Remedies-
1. Small but many workouts daily
2. Steam inhalation
3. Magical immunity booster combination for sinusitis relief
4. Stay hydrated
5. Adequate sleep
So, adding supportive Home Remedies to Relieve Sinus Pressure to acute sinusitis can prevent the transition to the chronic stage and provide relief.

The Rot
the Rot is contracted though the spores of the Verdortan mushroom which somewhat resembles Foxfire and is a dark glowing green. the spore have no smell or taste while they glow a bright green in the dark, in broad daylight they are completely invisible. Verdortan commonly grows of decomposing bodies of animals. you would assume that that mushroom started growing on the body after death, but the truth is much more disturbing.
the Verdortan spores can enter the host and infect though direct contact with the mushroom itself and the algae like substance that covers them called Basidom, or when the Verdortan releases it’s spores into the air and they are inhaled. the host is infected with The Rot as the spores use the bodies resources to grow killing the host slowly as they do.
at first phase the host is completely asymptomatic making it incredibly difficult to detect. more often than not by the time The Rot is identified it is in its later phases and has already done permanent damage to the host. if left untreated the Verdortan spores will slowly eat the host alive until nothing is left.
Phase One:
Duration of Phase if untreated: four-six months
Symptoms: asymptomatic
Identification: when the infection is first contracted it is rarely detected because of the lack of symptoms. only a well trained physician can find it, and only if they are looking for The Rot. it will appear like their equipment is broken causing the parts of their patient body where the infection is to look blurry and slightly green.
Infectivity: none
Treatment: if you are lucky enough to catch it, it can be cured with a dally dosage of Hygieia Serum for about a month. Hygieia Serum is a thick black elixir that is said to tastes of rotting fruits and milk, it’s incredibly hard for the patients to stomach but it’s the only elixir that is know to cure it. the basic dose is about a spoonful but increasing the dose may be necessary. the patient will need nausea elixirs as well because the growing spores will cause the body to reject the medicine. so it is advised to also give the patient Golden Apple Juice to boost the immune system
Fatality Rate: 0-1%
Phase Two:
Duration of Phase if untreated: three-four months
Key Symptoms: turns the eyes just a tint of green and a rash can appear on any part of the body.
General Symptoms: brain fog, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, short term memory loss, vertigo, aching joints and muscles, loss of appetite, sensory issues, emotional dysfunction, migraines, loss of power/control over ability especially common in elementals and cognitives
Infectivity: the infection is only spread though the patients bodily fluids. (le. blood, urine, saliva)
Identification: as the infection moves to the brain it starts to cause visible issues. while it can be detected at this phase more easily especially in those with cognitive abilities as it greatly effects their ability. it’s common the collection of symptoms will be diagnosed as something completely unrelated. if a physician notices the green in the patient eyes and knows what it means they can start the treatment without having The Rot risk any permanent damage.
Treatment: use Golden Apple Juice to boost the immune system for a week along with Tincture to kill the spores. before giving a dose of Hygieia Serum twice daily for several months. the fungus is just leaving the spore phase but will fight back causing the patient’s symptoms to flare up considerably before improving. make sure to give the patient breaks from the protocol while administering the Hygieia Serum because they need to keep their strength as one of the fungus defense mechanisms is to speed up the infection. if this happens you need to boost up the dose of Golden Apple Juice and Tincture to help the patient fight the risk of moving to phase three.
Fatality Rate: 10%
Phase Three:
Duration of Phase if untreated: one-three months
Key symptoms: the rash on the patient will start to turn green, the iris will have visible splotches of green throughout, the lips and saliva will have a tint of green.
General Symptoms: extreme nausea, fainting, chronic migraines, hives, sensitivity to light, aching joints and muscles, difficulty walking, vertigo, hair loss, fever, hot and cold flashes, hallucinations, loss of appetite, loss of weight and muscle tone, control of ability will go completely haywire
Infectivity: about as contagious as someone with the flu
Identification: with the patient starting to turn green The Rot is much easier to detect. but it’s also getting to the point it can cause permanent damage to the patient, as the fungus is starting to eat away at the patients muscle mass so it is vital to start treatment the second they are diagnosed.
Treatment: on top of treating the symptoms, the first thing you will need to do is to give a dose of Golden Apple Juice with each meal to to build up the immune System along with Tincture to break down the young fungus defenses. administer Hygieia Serum after a month of the protocol
there will be flare ups of the symptoms as the fungus fights back and be weary of the fungus pushing the infection to spread in retaliation as Phase Four is the most dangerous for the patient. only administer Hygieia Serum for one to two weeks at a time to during breaks continue the rest of the protocol and put Myovi Mustard paste on the body to the to help heal the muscles from the decay along Decay Away to keep the infection that was killed back from returning and Golden Apple Juice to keep up the immune systems strength (increase the dosage during flare ups). you will need to administer Hygieia Serum upwards of three months for the infection to be fully destroyed. the patient will need constant checkups for up to six months after they are rid of the infection to make sure they are recovering properly and the infection isn’t returning.
Note: it is recommended to take some of the patients hair at this phase because if they progress any farther and the patient passes their hair will be infected with the Rot and will be unable to be used for a wanderling
Fatality Rate: 25%
Phase four:
Duration of Phase if untreated: 2-4 months
Key Symptoms: veins turning a dark green especially on and around the eyes, mouth, lips, and hands. saliva tongue and lips turning a dark green, the hives become dark green and irritated filled with Basidom, blood has wisps of green in it when taken for testing, the iris is now a dark green and the whites of the eyes have a green tint
General Symptoms: coughing up blood, inability to leave bed, inability to eat or drink, hallucinations, shortened breath, loss of color, bleeding gums, cracked bleeding lips, extreme weight loss, unable to use ability, seizures, delirium from pain, high fever,
Identification: at this phase it is obvious that it is what the patient has is the rot. at this phase the Rot has already done permanent damage to the patient and needs to be dealt with immediately to keep the damage as minimal as possible.
Infectivity: in general the patient is as contagious as someone with a bad flu. anything the patient touches will need to be sterilized as the the Basidom is contagious if not washed off immediately.
Treatment: give the patient a steady stream of immune system boosting and nutritional elixirs, along with daily breathing treatments, and elixirs and injections to keep the fever down. all on top high dosage of Decay Away to halt the fungus from eating the muscles along with Golden Apple Juice and Tincture to break down the fungus defenses and to keep it from spreading farther. the patient will be in constant pain and will build up tolerance to painkillers, so it’s vital to have multiple different kinds on hand at all times.
when the hives are scratched they will ooze a dark green algae like substance called Basidom. you must be incredibly careful with Basidom because it’s highly contagious and is the easiest way to contract The Rot. while it’s much safer to wait until it’s dries to clean the patient it’s incredibly hard to wash off because it involves scrubbing which can easily open up more boils. fly’s and other insects will be drawn to the open wounds so it’s necessary to bandage the wounds and change them constantly.
use Myovi mustard paste to strengthen the patients muscels. much more delicate than they are in phase three so you need to build up Golden Apple Juice and in the system for at least a two in half months before starting the administration of Hygieia Serum. you can only administer Hygieia Serum a couple days at a time before going a week break while still continuing daily doses of Golden Apple Juice Tincture and Decay Away to keep it from coming back. it can upwards of a year for the infection to be fully killed and there will be risk of losing the patient.
it is normally about three months before the patient can get off of bed rest, and another three to go back to phase one. they will need weekly visits from a physian for a least six months after they fully recover. the rot did permanent damage and the patient going to need to take elixirs to treat it
Note: because of the Extreme hair loss it’s advised to shave the patients head.
Fatality rate: 60%
Phase Five
Duration of Phase if untreated: up to a month
Main Symptoms: the patient will look as if they are a dead body at first glance and they will have to fat or muscle, they head to toe covered in a thin layer of spores, their eyes are fully a dark green and glowing there is not distinction between the iris and the white of the eye, their all of their veins are a deep green and they spread over the body like glowing spider webs. the air the patient exhales is toxic and will infect anyone who breathes it with the rot, they will start smell like a dead body premortem
Symptoms: barely breathing, no muscle, sunken in eyes, barely able to speak, extreme pain, delirium, no control over bowels
Identification: this phase is where the infection gets it name, it’s the most terrifying phase as it is the most deadly.
Infectivity: The patient is incredibly contagious at this point the air they exhale and the Basidom is in its most contagious phase and it’s dangerous to breathe the same air as someone in this phase so proceed with caution. it’s vital to wear full body covering and a breathing mask if you are going to even attempt to treat this patient
Treatment: there is no hope of a patient getting better at this point, it’s advised to give the patient pain killers and sedatives to let them pass on as peacefully as possible.
Fatality rate: 100%
Post Mortem
the Verdortan will sprout out of the the host eyes nose mouth ears and any open wounds that where still on the host at the time of death. the host will glow from the inside as the fungus eats away and grows on what was left of their internal organs. the hosts skin will be eaten away quickly as the Fungus doesn’t waste. the corpse will end up with bones showing in some places and with skin loosely hanging over others. after a month the Verdortan mushrooms will release their spores and the cycle will repeat

Up next in my #Goths guide to #mushrooms has very quickly become a favourite of mine, is the #magpieinkcap. Which not only bleeds #black goo like the common ink cap, but is so poisonous I actually can't find the list of symptoms. SCP#: AHT
Code Name: The Jester Plague/ Smile Fungus
Object Class: Keter Neutralized
Special Containment Procedures: The city where SCP-AHT first manifested has been safely walled off before surrounding areas could be infected. Efforts are currently underway to properly contain and extract samples out of the infected city without causing another outbreak. Every civilian safely rescued by Foundation forces are to be given Class G Amnestics and the cover story that the city is under a biological terrorist attack. After the unknown extraterrestrial arrived spontaneously, SCP-AHT had been eradicated with all infected being wiped form existence. Instead MTF: Apollo-1: Orion's Belt and MTF Artemis-2: Star Chasers are to search for any evidence of the extraterrestrial entities that destroyed SCP-AHT.
Description: SCP-AHT is a highly contagious, mutagenic, and resilient fungus. SCP-AHT has the anomalous abilities of forcing its victim to smile and commit vile acts of violence and sadism while laughing. During the first week of infection by SCP-AHT the host will experience headaches, facial twitching and cramps but nothing major. It should be noted the telltale sign of infection even before symptoms appear is dreaming of floating through space before meeting a strange man who will smile at the host before they wake up. Unfortunately, the fungus making up SCP-AHT is so resilient that modern medication has no effect. The fungus latches directly onto the brain, the only means of treatment is the complete removal of the fungus. The only other method of cure is use of SCP-500.
"Thank god we finally figured out how to clone the drug" -Dr. Wicked.
After two week(s) of infection SCP-AHT forces the host to smile despite the host still being in pain. Host is unable stop smiling, has meningitis, constant headaches, a feeling of stressed and stretched muscles all over the face, and the lack of ability to blink properly. Host remains sane in this stage but is fully conscious of the mental and physical pain they experience during infection.
After three weeks of infection SCP-AHT has completely taken over the brain of the host by chemical means. SCP-AHT has not only forced the host to smile to an unhealthy and painful degree but also makes them laugh without stopping. The host also claims they are happy while chasing and killing whoever they see. This is typically where the host dies, not due to natural infectious causes but due to them being killed by those they try to harm. It should also be noted that at this stake the hair of the victims starts to degrade. The hair of the host either starts falling off or turn black and rough.
After four weeks of infection the fungus starts devouring and degrading the flesh of the facial structure and the rest of the body. the vocal cords, lungs, stomach, liver, kidneys, and intestines all become corroded due to either extreme strain or degradation by the fungus. However, the host's hostile tendencies and their motor functions decline leaving them weaker and less of a threat. Despite the damage the fungus leaves on the body for whatever reason fungal growths on the face will always grow and attach to certain parts of the face to maintain the smile expression of the host. At this point recovery is still possible but massive amounts of mental therapy, physical therapy, Physical muscle surgery, skin transplants, and organ transplants are needed to recover from the damage of infection.
After five weeks of infection the host has experienced extreme degradation to the body. The damage is similar to an elder near death or a corpse that has just started decomposing. The organs have degraded to the point of nonfunctional and rotting internally in the body. The brain has degraded to a point no different from a brain under the effects of stage 7 Alzheimer's disease. Very few patients live up to this stage if any at all; however, at this point it's impossible to consider the host a threat anymore due to every portion of their body has corroded. Though they are no longer a physical threat, hosts that make it to this stage typically end up coughing up a massive cloud of spores after death. Every host regardless of what stage of infection they are cough up spores after death. However, hosts that manage to live up to five weeks cough up the most spores with a maximum range of 10 meters. Therefore, despite the internal and external damage of their bodies they are potentially the most dangerous of all infected.
SCP-AHT was discovered in 1/1/1995 when an insane man named [data expunged] suspected to be under the influence of drugs was killed after going on a rampage. During a New Year's part at the [data expunged] plaza of [data expunged] local police forces were sent in. [data expunged] was seen holding a knife laughing while wearing a grotesquely large smile on his face and slashing through several people. SCP-AHT was originally believed to be a drug that caused the effects. After [data expunged] was killed several other infected individuals were found inhaling the spores for euphoric purposes and were intentionally throwing the powdered spores at unsuspecting victims. This seemingly confirmed the idea of SCP-AHT being a anomalous drug that encourage its users to commit horrible acts while smiling and force others to get high on the drug as well. However, after reviewing autopsy reports from the [data expunged] hospital revealed that it was a fungal infection.
it is unknown where exactly SCP-AHT originated form, it was just known that the original "spore puffers" found SCP-AHT and started inhaling it to feel its euphoric effects, unaware they were accelerating the infection within themselves. Due to the spontaneous infection rates within the city of [data expunged] the city had to be quarantined and walled off. Mobile Task Force Ares-1: "Mushroom Eaters" where deployed into the city to termination the infected, gather SCP-AHT samples, and rescue noninfected civilians.
The cover story is that a mutagenic fungus outbreak was unleashed in the city and the CDC is responsible for walling the city and evacuating survivors. The U.S. media is not permitted to release any more details. Foundation forces inside the city are working closely with the [data expunged] hospital to treat patients and determine whether or not they are infected so that they can be evacuated. It's also thanks to the hospital that the Foundation has extensive knowledge on the fungus. It is with hope that with MTF Ares-1 the city will be fully evacuated and SCP-AHT will be contained by the end of the year.
Update: 11/21/1995, Two new variants have been reported to mutate leading two new variants of the disease. As such hosts infected with the first variant of SCP-AHT are now labeled SCP-AHT-1 instances.
Hosts infected with the second variant are called SCP-AHT-2, they are not like the first variant and still retain their sanity and health. However, the spores spread through their coughing and sneezing making them infectious carriers.
Hosts infected with the third variant are called SCP-AHT-3 instances. SCP-AHT-3 instances are extremely dangerous as they are bullet proof, possess inhuman strength and speed, enhanced senses, and increased sense of violence and sadism.
Due to the SCP-AHT-3 instances almost all MTF Ares-1 forces have been killed and the survivors were reported infected thus had to be incinerated by the Foundation. Foundation forces at the [data expunged] hospital are holding out, for now. Due to the desperate and prolonged situation the Global Occult Coalition stepped in to assist the Foundation. Joint Task Force Demeter-2: "Apocalypse Now" comprised of Foundation AFA-2's and Coalition WD-5′s were sent in to reestablish connection with the [data expunged] hospital and rescue the survivors.
Update: 11/27/1995, Demeter-2 has confirmed that they are stuck and surrounded by SCP-AHT-1 and SCP-AHT-3 instances making escape impossible. The only option is to hold out.
Update: 3/31/1996, All SCP-AHT-1 instances have been confirmed dead however there are still over two thousand confirmed SCP-AHT-3 instances roaming around the city. JTF Demeter-2 as well as the doctors and civilians they are responsible for, are still trapped inside the city. It is conformed they are suffering casualties every other day and running out of resources. Due to the desperation of the situation the O5 Council made a direct request for an Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance meeting.
***
Notice Under the Order of the Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance.
O5 Council of the SCP Foundation, your request has been sent due to your report of an overwhelming threat located at The United States on 4/1/1996. Reasoning for Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance action was called due to a subject concerning the following: Highly contagious pathogen, Unknown hostile Anomalous Group's involvement suspected, Potential danger to the veil of the global status quo, massive loss of life, Overwhelming anomalous threat, and Anomaly has unknown origin. All organizations of Anomalous Fate Alliance are required to participate in an emergency meeting concerning the subject.
Current Organizations within the Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance:
Global Occult Coalition
SCP Foundation
Horizon Initiative
Church of Maxwellism
Eight Wings of Mekhane
The threat level has been confirmed to be 6 of 10, therefore participation is mandatory.
***
All organizations are present, begin mission program.
Assessment: Anomaly originally thought to be a highly hazardous drug is actually a fungus causing anomalous effects on its infected hosts. Despite local forces, Foundation, and GOC forces best efforts, the infected of the fungus are still an overwhelming threat with the possibility of destruction and further infection. Massive loss of life predicted if anomaly is left to it's deceives.
Solution: Complete Eradication of the anomaly. No containment will be permitted.
Orders:  Church of Maxwellism and Eight Wings of Mekhane will lead a project to design and create a new cybernetic ground force capable of combating the army of anomalous threats.
Probability of Success: 95% begin right away.
***
Update: April 2nd, 1996 - Probability of Success has been lowered to 58%. Sarkic forces have infiltrated the city and are trying to get the anomalous spore out to infect the outside world. All Organizations, deploy all available forces outside the city as quickly as possible. Do not let the Sarkic Cult get out.
Suggestions: All organizations, please submit possible solutions to-
Update: April 3rd, 1996 - Unknown lights have been reported over the city. Possible new anomalous threat has arrived and will soon wreak havoc on-
Update: April 3rd, 1996 - Satellite scans have confirmed that the extraterrestrial anomaly has disappeared from the atmosphere, they are gone.
***
Update: April 5th, 1996 - SCP-Foundation: MTF Apollo-1 "Orion's belt", Global Occult Coalition: Strike Team-7445 "Space Dragons", and Eight Wings of Mekhane: 7-8-W/128-F "Soaring through the Abyss" have not reported any sightings of the anomalous extraterrestrial entities within our solar system. Before or after the incident. All Ground forces are moving into the city, no sign of anomalous fungus or the infected.
***
Update: April 7th, 1996 - Ground forces have take back the city and subdued the last of the Sarkic forces, no more immediate threats within the city. Ground forces have confirmed that all infected have instantaneously disappeared along with the anomalous fungal infection itself.
***
Mission Status: The anomaly is gone; however, the Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance was not responsible for the anomaly's eradication. Therefore, mission is considered a failure. All organizations, if at all possible, find any evidence about the origin of the anomalous fungus infection and the whereabouts of the unknown extraterrestrials. Level 6 alert has been lifted; action form the Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance has been concluded.
***
After the Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance meeting concluded the Foundation and the Global Occult Coalition worked on the coverup. It was agreed to kill most of the heavily mutated sarkics that infiltrated the city. The one's that looked the most human were pinned the blame as the bio terrorist who spread the disease in the first place. The U.S. government sentenced them to death thus they were sent back to the Foundation as D-Class personal. The rescued civilians were given Class G Amnestic's and told the story of a biological terrorist attack making them think their overwhelming fear caused them to hallucinate the SCP-AHT-1 and SCP-AHT-3 instances.
According to the reports from one of the surviving doctors they had found the biological origin of SCP-AHT to be somewhere in the Yucatan Region. Furthermore, their DNA testing has shown that SCP-AHT's DNA structure has no biological match to the fungi found on earth, as well as any other organism found on earth. This implies that SCP-AHT was not meant for earth and therefore was of extraterrestrial origin.
As requested during the Anomalous Correction and Protection Alliance meeting, the Foundation created Mobile Task Force Artemis-2: Star Chasers. MTF Artemis-2 is comprised of the 30 of the fastest and most flight capable Space Jets the Foundation could manufacture. The ISLJ-7 Hawks are equipped with interstellar clocking armor plating and a miniature artificial sun generator allowing maximum stealth and speed of Mach 15. However, they lack weaponry systems due to their priority being to fly out of our solar system and scout the neighboring solar systems to find anything they can. Their mission will last 10 years and thought they are a search and discover unit their main priority is to find the whereabouts of the extraterrestrials that destroyed SCP-AHT.
Update: April 7th, 2006 - No evidence or information has been located by MTF Artemis-2. MTF-Artemis-2 are to return to earth and await future orders.
Doctor [data expunged] and the other survivors were given the choice to join the Foundation due to the "sole survivor" protocol because of their contributions of understanding SCP-AHT. Doctor [data expunged] agreed and so did some of his colleges as well as some survivors. Those that didn't were given the proper amnestic’s, new houses within new cities, as well as $700,000 for their contributions despite them not remembering.
"Though it was technically a happy ending and a bright new day for everyone a lot of people in the Foundation and of course our allied organizations can't help but feel it was still a failure. We were so close to figuring out how what the hell SCP-AHT even was and yet it was snatched away from us. Though to be fair those SCP-AHT-3 instances probably would have taken another year to eradicate and contain, you can only keep the media silent for so long. I guess at the end of the day this is about as good as it could have been. We got a "get out of jail card" and you'd be stupid not to take one of those.
Though there are still some unanswered questions and... well actually... I didn't really think it mattered at the time but now that I think about the one of my subordinates came to me about a report from the Global Occult Coalition about a strange single. Apparently, they started recording the single back on November 4th of 1994, but they couldn't make out what it was saying. The best they could understand where random numbers but that was it, they couldn't even tell where the signal was coming from. I thought it was a waste of time to investigate so I denied the request for investigation help. I was thinking the GOC was just wasting their time. However now that I think about it, I might have made a mistake. What if it was the aliens trying to tell us something, if it was, I could have organized an investigation and cyphering team to find out what it all meant... so much for that now." - Site Director Veil
Site Director Veil reported directly to the O5 Council his blunder and as punishment he was forced to not only create an investigation team but also participate in said team despite having no experience in cyphering.
The best that could be determined was the message TRANSPORT WITHIN WEEK, MAKE THEM HAPPY. The rest of the message still can’t be deciphered correctly or to any sensible message. Despite the collaboration between the Global Occult Coalition and the SCP Foundation, there was still nothing that could be determined the full message of the signal or its origin. Further investigation is needed.
