If you've heard of black crested macaques or the Yaki monkey, it is probably this one:
Tumblr media
This black crested macaque became famous in 2011 when the photographer David Slater was taking photos in the jungle of Sulawesi Indonesia where black crested macaques are indigenous fauna. Slater was not the photographer who captured this photo, however. It was the macaque who has since been commonly called Naruto who took its own photograph on Slater's camera. The famous monkey selfie sparked a copyright lawsuit brought by PETA onto Slater, which was settled in 2017 with an agreement that Slater would donate a percentage of any profits gained by the pictures Naruto took to organizations that protect this species in the wild.
For the millions who enjoyed Naruto's selfies online, the story ends there. For Naruto and the Yaki the story continues. The black crested macaque is critically endangered. Slater's website says he donates 10% of the proceeds of all "monkey selfie" merchandise to "a monkey conservation project in Sulawesi", and while he does not specify which conservation project he supports, there is one I know of that does incredible work.
Selamatkan Yaki is an operation with a huge impact. The Yaki is one of the most endangered primates in the world, and it can be difficult to gauge just how many of them are out there. This is where biodiversity monitoring comes in to produce the data needed for effective conservation protocol. A pilot study was conducted in Tangkoko Nature Reserve, which has created the blueprint for surveying the entire province using camera traps and remote sensing to observe the Yaki and their threats over time.
Tumblr media
Using the data gathered from monitoring, Selamatkan Yaki collaborated with the government agency for natural resource conservation to create a Species Action Plan (SAP). This species action plan is not only an evidence based conservation plan designed to save the Yaki, but all the other species that share its forest home. Establishing the Yaki as a flagship species is crucial as this charismatic monkey is just one of many species that is not found anywhere else in the world.
Tumblr media
One of the major threats Yaki face, like many other primate species, is hunting for wildlife trafficking and the bush meat trades. While hunting the Yaki is illegal, it takes a true culture shift to keep endangered animals out of traps and cages. Selamatkan Yaki has developed both community conservation and environmental education programs designed to unite local communities in protecting the species. The community conservation program involves surveys conducted since 2007 so that long term data on human-animal relationships can be tracked to best identify community conservation methods. This data is used in the environmental education program which introduces information on biodiversity and conservation to school curriculum and provides research opportunities and scholarships for post secondary students to contribute to conservation.
Selamatkan Yaki understands that it isn't enough to have a team of people dedicated to saving the black crested macaque-- the more people who care and help the better. Everyone has a role to play in conservation, but right now so many people outside Indonesia have only ever seen the black crested macaque once, in a photo online. That's why I'm partnering with Selamatkan Yaki to spread information about the work they do and the species they protect. To learn more about Selamatkan Yaki you can click the links in this post, and stay tuned for more on the black crested macaque.

Lilac done by the amazing @girl-monkey-odalys. Her style is so expressive! I know the bony structure of Lilac's face can be a challenge to draw. I had to pick the last one as a pfp, it's just too cute 🥰 thanks again for these!

The Celebes crested macaque (Macaca nigra), also known as the crested black macaque, Sulawesi crested macaque, the black ape,the yaki, or the wolai is an Old World monkey that lives in the Tangkoko reserve in the north-eastern tip of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (Celebes), as well as on smaller neighboring islands. Here they inhabit rainforests and typically spend there days on the ground socializing and searching for food such as various fruits, leaves, buds, seeds, fungus, small birds and bird eggs, insects, worms, snails, and the occasional small lizard or frog. While spending there nights resting high up in the trees. Black macaques are a highly social species which lives in groups of five to twenty-five animals, though occasionally groups of up to 75 may occur. Smaller groups have only a single adult male, while larger groups have up to four adult males. However, adult females always outnumber adult males by about 4:1. Reaching around 17 to 24 inches (44 to 60cms) in body length and 8 to 25lbs (3.5 to 10.5lbs) in weight, it is one of the smaller macaque species. The body is black, covered with rough, thick, and wooly fur. The black face of the primate is coated with a dense layer of hair. Compared to other macaques, their skull is more projecting and baboon-like. Hairs on the top of their head compose a crest, facing up and backward. On the rear they possess distinctive kidney-shaped, bright pink ischial callosities. The tail is short, having the form of a nubbin. The Celebes crested macaque is promiscuous, with both males and females mating multiple times with multiple partners. The receptivity of the females is clearly indicated by an extreme swelling and redness of their buttocks. After a 174 day pregnancy a mother typically gives birth to a single offspring which she will nurse for around a year. Under ideal conditions a Celebes crested macaque will reach sexual maturity at around in three to four years, and may live up to 20.

Females engage in a form of mutual masturbation unique to homosexual interactions, in which they stand side by side facing in opposite directions (draping an arm over the other's waist) and fondle and sniff each other's vulva, sometimes with direct clitoral stimulation.

Macaque design(AU)
Despite his known species of having white fur, he would still have black fur HOWEVER it isn’t a glamour but instead his original fur “a black crested macaque”
He is a retired warrior and decided to rebel against the kingdom he used to fight for, now he is a nomad who does shadow play to earn money
In this AU he has never met Sun Wukong but he holds a strong grudge to him once he realizes he is the real father of MK, but sooner or later he would soften up to him once he sees him face his problems
He’s actually a sweet person and has a soft side with children

hey mammal, do you happen to know if any other animals brux and boggle, or is that only a rodent behavior?
Boggling is something generally only seen in rats (and to a much lesser extent in mice) because of their anatomy, but other mammals do grind their teeth to communicate! Lagomorphs do it and it serves the same function as a rodent’s bruxing: they do it when they’re relaxed or as a self-soothing behavior when they’re stressed or anxious. Here’s a very relaxed domestic bunny “purring”:
youtube
Bats and certain monkeys (especially macaques) are known to chatter their teeth as well! It seems different species of monkeys do it for different reasons but in bats it’s generally understood as a display of curiosity.
youtube
Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) chattering (starts at 0:13).
youtube
Black crested macaque (Macaca nigra) chattering.
Large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) chattering (Sadly the only video I’ve been able to find was a Facebook video so you have to have an account to see it).
And, of course, cats do it! Most domestic cat owners have seen their cats chattering when they see birds or other prey animals but this behavior is seen in wild cats as well, such as the domestic cat’s direct ancestor, the African wildcat (Felis lybica):

What's the difference between a monkey and a macaque anyway?
Macaques are a species of monkey, so essentially they are the same, if that answers your question. However-- if you're asking what the difference between me and Wukong is:
Wukong is also a "Macaque". We're both spiritual primates, which is a species of its own-- but he most closely resembles a Chinese Macaque/Tibetan Macaque, although his "species" is "Stone Monkey". I am a "Six-Eared Macaque" but I mostly closely resemble a Japanese Macaque, though I use glamors to look more like a Black Crested Macaque. Yes, I have white fur, yes I have a short stubby tail. I like having a longer one though, it means I can grab things with it.
Hope this helps!

Terrortober 2022 Day 14 - Free Day (Rats)
Billy’s friends often told them they envied them for working at a zoo, even if it was only as a barista in the café. Billy would always say it was like being a regular barista but with thousands of screaming children added into the mix, with their sticky fingers and red little faces smeared with ice cream and tiger face paint. The job had its good side. Their manager Tom Jopson was a bit of a stickler but they got along okay, the Jaguar café was at the far end of the park and was nowhere near as busy as the main food court, the vegan doughnuts were delicious, and on slow days in the winter Billy would take their breaks in the Tropical Realm, a huge indoor enclosure designed to look like the amazon rainforest. Billy would go there to read and watch the free flying birds, and sometimes to watch the tropical rodent keeper who had recently been hired.
Tom always said that keepers started to look a bit like their animals. Like how Fitzy looks a bit like a cheetah with those lines on his cheeks, and Frank looked like that psycho polar bear they’d just taken in from that zoo in Germany, and Mr Franklin looked like one of those black crested macaques he was so fond of.
In the same vein, Neil Hickey looked like a weird little rat man but in a weirdly hot way. For a start, he was absolutely jacked. He had long hair and a pointy little beard like Sir Walter Raleigh. He kept a pack of cigarettes under the sleeve of his t-shirt like he was James Dean or something. He was ridiculous and Billy wanted to jump him so badly.

Your characters are so adorable 🥰 What made you decide on a crested black macaque and a Hanuman langur as your OCs?
Tumblr media
Thank you! For Lilac's species, it was the famous "monkey selfie" of a crested black macaque that inspired me. The moment I saw it, I fell in love with this species and began researching it. I was amazed by these monkeys' sensitivity and calm, friendly behaviour. They're now my favourite primates 🐒 As for Connor's, it was a bit more random; I was very undecided at first. One day I was flipping through an illustrated primate guide, saw the Hanuman langur and decided that would be Connor! I was looking for a large species that could fit the "fun-loving & dynamic" type I had in mind for him and I think this one does!

Genital rubbing, masturbation of one's partner, oral sex, anal stimulation other than mounting, and sexual grooming occur among same-sexed individuals in more than 70 species – yet virtually all of these forms of sexual expression fall outside the realm of clear-cut dominance relationships.⁸⁹
Tumblr media
89. In some cases, sexual behaviors other than mounting can be correlated with dominance. For example, grooming between males in Nilgiri Langurs and Crested Black Macaques is often performed by a subordinate animal on a more dominant one. Nevertheless, it is apparent that this activity has a clearly sexual component as well: one or both of the males may become intensely aroused, developing an erection and even ejaculating during the grooming (see Poirier 1970a:334 for Nilgiri Langurs and Poirer 1964:146-47 for Crested Black Macaques). Similarly, adult (dominant) Bonobos often masturbate or massage the genitals of adolescent (subordinate) males, but again, the activity involves clear sexual stimulation (cf. de Waal 1987, 1995, 1997). Also, Squirrel Monkey genital displays are sometimes correlated with dominance, but there are also cases where the association is less than definitive, or where they occur in clearly sexual contexts between animals of the same sex (cf. Talmage-Riggs and Anschel 1973:70; Travis and Holmes 1974:55; Baldwin and Baldwin 1981:295-97; Castell and Heinrich 1971:187-88).
