Even though she made her statement on national TV, and several FIRs were filed against her, Amit Shah and his police, who were so prompt in harassing Mohammed Zubair and arresting him, have not taken any action. The power elite seems to have no limit to their ability to protect themselves.

It’s not hard to believe that Mohammed Zubair was subject to harassment by the Delhi Police under the Home Ministry. He had posted the clip of Ms. Sharma’s comments on TV. This is a perfectly legal, logical step by a fact-checker who wanted to expose hate-mongering and the truth. Police tried to hide their vindictive actions against Zubair by grabbing a tweet he sent in 2018 quoting from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film. Four years ago, Zubair’s tweet was deleted, and no “religious sentiments” were hurt. A fake social media account has filed a complaint about the old tweet. The Delhi Police is quick to respond.

In an interview, a right-wing news portal, Nupur Sharma blamed Mohammed Zubair for the trolling she was subject to, including death threats. The Cyber Crime Cell must trace the source of the death threats she reportedly received and take action against them. No one should be able to accept threats of violence, and action must be taken to stop them. Mohammed Zubair is to be blamed. He simply shared what she had said, which she later regretted. The Supreme Court now says that her apology was not sincere and that she should apologize to the entire country. It said it had also seen the entire video and strongly criticized the program’s tone. Are the judges to be charged with encouraging death threats as well? Demonstrations against the bench could also be organized.

NUPUR SHARMA’S TAKE ON THE MATTER – ARRESTED?

This portal, which allowed Nupur Sharma to blame Zubair, has now made a bold and dangerous statement in response to the court’s comments. Its editorial desk stated that “The SC hasn’t stopped at just blaming one woman for violence and murder perpetrated by religious fanatics under the name of Islam” and that “The Supreme Court has declared that Sharma is the victim of the violence Islamists have declared for Sharma, and that it may be the case that Sharma deserved the violence.” It is a fact that one fundamentalism can strengthen the other. We are witnessing the terrible effects of this in India. The bulldozer of toxic majoritarian communalism ramming against constitutional guarantees, Islamicists and their rabid group make inroads into beleaguered communities. This is a terrible nightmare India must deal with. India must also end the darkness that allows its creation. The courts play an important role in this. Sometimes, but not often, their sharp comments can help clear the path, such as those made in the Nupur Sharma case. Sharma’s supporters have appealed to the Chief Justice to “remove the comments against Sharma.” It will be a sad day for all concerned if this happens. It is impossible to deny the truth.

In Hyderabad gang rape, BJP legislator booked for revealing girl’s identity

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker was on Tuesday booked for allegedly revealing the identity of the schoolgirl, who was allegedly gang-raped in an upscale Hyderabad locality on May 28, by releasing photographs and videos related to the incident, police said. The complainant said the photos and videos of the girl went viral on social media after the lawmaker released them at a press conference. Komireddy has also filed a similar complaint with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Telangana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Rao earlier said he was not afraid of any cases. He added the photographs and the videos did not show the face or any other identification marks of the girl, nor mentioned her name. “I released the pictures and video to expose the accused who were involved in the crime. There is a conspiracy to protect All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leaders and their children involved in the incident.”

your mom's experience and pain are of course, very valid, but modi and his govt. are hindu nationalist and they see islam as kind of the polar opposite of hinduism and "hindu values". while modi himself remains particularly quiet, his right hand man, amit shah, has no problem talking about muslims with disdain, calling them "invaders", saying shit like "india will never be muslim-mukt (free)", and this is just shit he says. there's a lot more shit that their govt does, especially the citizenship (amendment) act of 2019, which protects people who are facing religious persecution in neighbouring countries from the proceedings of illegal migration, and fast-tracking the process of indian citizenship for them. the problem, of course, is that it excludes muslim people, because, as the govt said, "they can seek refuge in islamic nations"... which completely goes against india's identity as a secular nation.

and if that wasn't enough, the modi govt has spent the odd 7 years that it has been in power, in both state govts and on the central level, spreading misinformation and islamophobic propaganda that elevates hinduism and paints islam and its followers as villains. it's the basic technique of othering the minority, calling them suspicious foreigners, creating a false image in the eyes of the hindu majority. uttar pradesh's chief minister, yogi adityanath, has said on camera that (according to him) "hindus and muslims cannot live peacefully in the same country" like it's an infallible, uncontested Truth. media that is biased towards the BJP is known for under-reporting and being dismissive of discrimination and hate crimes faced by muslims, usually at the hands of hindus, like mob lynchings over cows and beef, while never shutting up about any kind of crime by muslims, and conspiracy theories like love jihad (which is objectively islamophobic btw). i don't think i need to point out just how similar their entire idealogy is to those of nazis and white supremacists in western countries.

there's a lot more to this than i have said, but one of the scariest facts about their hindutva bullshit is that it works, especially on poor hindus, who form the majority of india, because it gives the govt a scapegoat for their own mistakes. it breeds fear of something non existant, which then turns into anger. and that's how you see people crying about "hinduphobia"... in a hindu majority country... under an extremely hindu-positive govt. but it's not just them. i have seen with my own eyes how over the past 7 years, my grandfather, who has always been a very peaceful and tolerant person, who has worked with muslims for years before retiring, has now gradually turned hateful towards them, and all it takes is 1 misleading whatsapp forward. here's a few articles to read up further on this, because my reply is neither complete nor concise lol:

Recently, Karnataka High Court ordered a hijab ban in all educational classrooms after protests. The highcourt said "the aim of the regulation to create a safe space & the ideals of egalitarianism should be readily apparent to all students".

BJP said they don't have a bias towards Brahmins & hindu shows of religious symbolism but given the way things are going with hindutva and the rigid rules around the ganga, i feel like this is an outright lie, esp from this particular political party.

I feel conflicted because muslim women are being banned from education, coming to university, giving exams because they "want" to wear their hijab. Personally I believe the hijab, esp in India is patriarchal and part of the whole pure woman issue. But also I don't think harassing muslims & banning their shows of religion is constitutional in any way. Currently the ban is being challenged in the supreme court.

I'm all for promoting equality and removing religious separation, but this feels disingenuous from the government's side. Banning students from speaking Urdu seems to me that it's more than just uniforms in school. One of the judges likened the constitution to the Bhagavad Gita which makes him clearly biased towards Hinduism.

I can't decide if this ban is for the greater good or not. On one hand, I do not think a hijab is representative of empowerment, rather the opposite. But I also believe in letting women wear what they want (though this depends, Islam threatening women with hell isn't exactly a free choice). With the elections going on & some next year, this just feels like a way to cater to alt right Hindus who are already wanting a Hindu nation.

I think you're right and it smells fishy and biased.

Under liberal secularism, a law should be necessary (solve a problem), should not exceed what is necessary, should have neutral language, and should be applied consistently.

For example, while it's often been misrepresented, France's "burqa ban" is a ban on full-face coverings to ensure that people (women) are consenting, present and engaged in society, and not being smuggled through society under duress or manipulation.

While the intent might be to protect Muslim women from coercion and isolation, the language of the French law as written is completely neutral, as it is also applicable to wearing a zentai as it is a burqa.

And this is the point. That laws need to be neutral and applied consistently. And yes, citing religious scripture as rationale or justification indicates it's not neutral. But using the word “egalitarian,” the government seems to at least recognize it’s supposed to be unbiased. But it’s doing a particularly shoddy job of this pretence.

Being "conflicted" isn't necessarily a bad thing. I actually think it's a good thing in many ways. It means you can see the conflict between society's interests (the state) and the rights of the individual, as well as your current political climate. Again, if we consider France, they had the chutzpah to ban all conspicuous religious symbols in schools. And again, it's completely neutral in wording, as it should be, and applies to all religions.

If it was true to its word, your government would have proposed something much more akin to the French law, more universal, and applied and enforced consistently. And then you would probably be much more satisfied. But being that consistent is something so politically contentious that even few highly secular governments would be willing to implement it, much less religiously captured ones.

The more I know about Islam and hijab, the more convinced I am, like you, that no woman freely, without duress, influence or coercion "chooses" hijab, and it begins by manipulating, threatening and indoctrinating young girls into Islam's messed-up purity culture when they have no means of defence. And that's true even in countries like Canada and the US (see: Yasmine Mohammed).

That said, I think as far as the "greater good" goes, it's not being done for that. I think what you're asking is does the ends justify the means, and I'd have to say no. We can't very well tout the superiority of liberal, secular ethics, and then abandon them to get what we want.

I think it matters how we solve our problems. If for no better reason than a group that feels singled out is more likely to radicalize. As it is, it sounds like this law might get shot down in the court as being unconstitutional. If it doesn't, the local Muslim population will have just been handed a righteous holy struggle. Even if it does, the government has revealed its agenda and intentions, possibly creating the same anyway.

There's a principle whose wording and author (Kant?) I can't quite find right now, but in essence is is that society should be created without knowing which part one will play in it - rich or poor, majority or minority. That is, don't create laws that you would benefit from that you wouldn't also want to be subjected to. This is why neutrality is important.

"Nothing For BJP To Hide, Nothing To Be Afraid Of": Amit Shah On Adani Row

The Hindenburg-Adani row has turned into a major political controversy with the Congress and other opposition parties making allegations of favouritism.

New Delhi: With the opposition targeting the BJP-led government over the Hindenburg-Adani row, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that it will not be appropriate for him to comment as the Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the matter but there is nothing "for the BJP to hide or be afraid of".

"The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the matter. As a minister, if the Supreme Court is seized of the matter it is not right for me to comment. But in this, there is nothing for the BJP to hide and nothing to be afraid of," Mr Shah said in an exclusive interview with ANI.

The Hindenburg-Adani row has turned into a major political controversy with the Congress and other opposition parties making allegations of favouritism and crony capitalism against the government. They raised the issue during the budget session of parliament demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe. 

The opposition parties have also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.

They have sought questions over the investment of LIC and some public sector banks in the Adani group. The government has rejected the allegations with PSUs and regulatory bodies also issuing statements about their following the norms and acting to their mandates.

The Centre on Monday informed the Supreme Court that SEBI had agreed to constitute a committee to protect investor interests following Hindenburg's report on Adani Group.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud that SEBI is completely equipped to deal with the situation that took place due to a recent report by Hindenburg Research.

Mehta also said that the government has no objection to appointing a committee to suggest how to ensure investors are protected in the future. However, he said that remit of the committee is important since it has an effect internationally and that the government will provide names in a sealed cover.

Asked about Rahul Gandhi's recent speech in Lok Sabha, which was almost entirely concerned the Adani group, Mr Shah said it is for the Congress leader or his script writers to decide what speech he wants to give.

"What speech he wants to give is for him or his speech writers to think," he said.

Reacting to Rahul Gandhi's "crony capitalism" allegation against BJP, Mr Shah said. "There is no question. Nobody has been able to level such allegation against the BJP till date. During their (Congress) era, agencies be it CAG or CBI, they had registered cases taking cognizance of corruption. There were scams of ₹ 12 lakh crore."

Asked about allegations of Congress and other opposition parties of BJP "capturing institutions", Mr Shah said they should go to the court noting that courts are not under influence of BJP. "Court 'humare kabze mein nahi hai," he said.

"Why don't they go to the court? Even at the time when Pegasus issue was raised, I had said go with proofs to the court...They only know how to create noise. Those who approached the court, the court took cognizance of Pegasus and also delivered its judgement. The investigation was also done," he added.

Asked about BJP spokespersons indicating that there is such "conspiracy" ahead of elections, he said it is for them to reply.

"Thousands of conspiracies cannot harm the truth. Truth shines bright like the sun. They have been doing it since 2002 against PM Narendra Modi. And every time, he has emerged stronger, truthfully and by gaining more popularity among people every time," he said when asked if there is a conspiracy in the wake of Hindenburg report and BBC documentary.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech at the Lok Sabha in reply to the debate on the motion of thanks on the President's address had lashed out at the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, saying that it converted "every opportunity into a crisis" during its 10 years at the helm between 2004 and 2014. PM Modi said UPA's term at the helm between 2004 and 2014 was "full of scams".

Ugly trend that can poison Indian cricket / GIDEON HAIGH

How we grew to admire them this summer, those dashing, defiant, skilful and fun Indian cricketers, led first by Virat Kohli then Ajinkya Rahane, as they taught Australia numerous cricket lessons. How we enjoyed, too, the scenes of their deservedly rapturous homecomings.

Prime minister Narendra Modi enjoyed exercising his prerogative of using the cricket team as symbolic of his “new India”. That “they took the challenge head on and looked for fresh solutions instead of getting frustrated by difficult conditions” exemplified how the nation could “emerge fearless” if “we overcome the fear of failure and unnecessary pressure”.

Standard stuff, of course. But let’s look a little closer, shall we?

Modi enjoys a curiously benign reputation hereabouts. Generally, Australian politicians look on India as simply a nice juicy trade market that is (a) not China and (b) see (a). “World’s largest democracy” comes trippingly off the tongue.

Unfortunately, India is a democracy in worsening decay, thanks to seven years of the BJP’s Hindu majoritarianism, at odds with the country’s traditions of pluralism and tolerance. And that’s got implications for cricket, even Australian cricket, of which we should be aware.

The ruling BJP’s modus operandi is demonising minorities, subverting institutions, intimidating media, criminalising dissent and, not least, tyrannising the internet.

No country shuts and throttles the net so regularly; no political party operates such slickly vicious online trolling. India swims in social media; into it the BJP’s digital operatives have a habit of throwing bloody bait, viz liberal celebrities, independent journalists and academics who have stepped out of line. Especially since last September.

That was when Modi’s administration rammed through the Rajya Sabha three bills designed to “liberalise” Indian agriculture. There had been no consultative process; the bills’ passage violated all parliamentary and constitutional norms; the laws were devoid of regulatory and legal protections for farmers, and as such a prescription for monopoly abuse, in a country where a score of companies already earn 70 per cent of corporate profits.

Discontent has roiled since. Demonstrations have been largely peaceful, if on an epic scale: a one-day strike in November involving 250 million people may well be the largest single protest in history, involving ten times as many people as marched for Black Lives Matter last year.

One exception was 26 January, India’s Republic Day, when 200 farmers were “detained” by Delhi’s notoriously violent police after diverting a march to the Red Fort. The same cops then created a cause célèbre by arresting a 22-year-old activist, Disha Ravi, basically for having the temerity to communicate with Greta Thunberg, which was described as showing intent “to wage economic, social, cultural and regional war against India.”

Why? Because India’s government craves the world’s attention but recoils from its scrutiny, and busily nourishes paranoia about foreign treachery so as to turn the political into the patriotic. And what really lit the blue touch paper was a tweet on 3 February by Rihanna, linking to a CNN article about an internet shutdown following the confrontation at the Red Fort.

“Why aren’t we talking about this?”, asked the pop chanteuse of her 100 million followers, adding the hashtag #FarmersProtests and generating almost a million likes.

Modi promptly upped the ante, threatening to jail Twitter’s local executives if Jack Dorsey did not suppress 100 allegedly “pro-farmer” accounts; Dorsey hastily capitulated.

Cyber battle was also joined by an army of counter tweeters flourishing hashtag banners such as #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda, somehow oblivious to their irony. And these included the elite of the country’s cricketers.

This is hardly so surprising. The Board of Control for Cricket in India is another institution increasingly pervaded by Modi’s myrmidons.

In November 2019, the BCCI “elected” as secretary Jay Shah and as treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal – respectively the son of home minister Amit Shah and the brother of finance minister Anurag Thakur, two particularly repulsive Modi cronies. The same election also promoted a character from Rajpur, Mahim Verma, secretary of the fledgling Cricket Association of Uttakharand – more on him presently.

Leading the way was Sachin Tendulkar: “External forces can be spectators but not participants. India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised. External forces can be spectators but not participants. Indians know India and should decide for India. Let’s remain united as a nation.”

Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ravi Shastri, Rohit Sharma and Anil Kumble issued slightly more emollient sentiments, with further calls for “unity” – implicitly echoing another BJP talking point, for which evidence is scant, that the farmers are aligned with Sikh separatists. Probably Rihanna fans too.

How strange that all these cricketers should have decided, independently and all at once, to inveigh against “propaganda”! How strange that they should then shrink from the week’s other significant Indian cricket issue….

Having played the last of 31 Tests in 2008, Wasim Jaffer has towered above Indian domestic cricket like Everest. He retired last March after playing more than 150 Ranji Trophy matches and accumulating almost 20,000 first-class runs at an average better than 50, and was recruited as coach by Uttakharand in north India.

Except it all ended acrimoniously on 10 February when Jaffer quit, “because of so much interference and bias of selectors and secretary in the selection matters for non-deserving players” – the secretary being old mate Verma.

Jaffer, though, is a Muslim. So Verma trumped up counterclaims of “communalism”: Jaffer’s preference for coreligionists. This is a classic trope of Hindu chauvinism, obsessed with the existence of a Muslim fifth column.

Nobody of any repute believes that the new coach did other than fall victim to overmighty, sticky-nosed locals, and he did attract some Twitter support, including from Kumble, who said that Jaffer had “done the right thing” in resigning.

But from Jaffer’s former comrades in the national side, nothing was heard. Why? Because, one imagines, it was as against their interests to speak up about sectarianism as it was in their interests to obediently regurgitate BJP slogans.

Some readers will be shaking their heads by now – those readers who haven’t already drifted off out of a rooted objection to cricket articles involving anything but cover drives and outswingers – about it just going to show how sport and politics should not mix.

They will be just as wrong. Sport and politics do mix, and always have: the questions revolve around in what proportion and to what ends. In India, those proportions are increasingly ugly and those ends worseningly oppressive; they should trouble every conscience.

On Thursday night, Fox Sports broadcasted a live feed of the player auction for the Indian Premier League. This is the face the BCCI likes to show the world – that of a big, benevolent sugar daddy, showering riches on the cricket world’s best. Go Maxy! Look at those lucky young quicks!

But how should we feel if the BCCI’s cosiness with the BJP warms further, if India’s cricketers become longer-term conscripts in their governments’s creepy online claque, and if its Muslim players are further singled out for victimisation? To quote Rihanna: “Why aren’t we talking about this?”
