"As an environmentalist, I am very concerned about the fragile and sensitive ecosystem of Ladakh,” said Magsaysay Award-winning educationist Sonam Wangchuk, who recently concluded his 21-day hunger strike in Leh. Popularly known as 'climate fast', Wangchuk had begun observing it on 6 March, demanding constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.

On the final day of his fast on 26 March, Wangchuk said that the people of Ladakh are trying to awaken the conscience of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah so that they take suitable action to safeguard the fragile ecosystem of Himalayan mountains in Ladakh and preserve the unique indigenous tribal culture.

“We don’t like to think of Modi ji and Amit Shah ji as just politicians, we would rather think of them as statesmen but for that, they will have to show some character and farsightedness…” he posted on X.

Wangchuk had become the face of a sustained agitation in the cold desert where people are up in arms against the central government for discarding their concerns regarding land and job rights.

"Every drop of water is important here. Ladakh can't support large numbers. It will make refugees out of locals and even for those who arrive, the situation would not be any good. That's the fear people have regarding the fate of our land and our culture – finely tuned over tens or even thousands of years to survive in these mountains, now at risk of dilution and unable to sustain itself,” he added.

However, this was not the first time that Wangchuk had undertaken a climate fast:

In January 2023, he undertook a five-day climate fast at his institution, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL) in Ladakh at -20 degrees Celsius.

In June 2023, Wangchuk again went on a nine-day climate fast to save "Ladakh’s fragile ecology."

The Ecological Connection to Ladakh’s Demands

Ladakh is a high-altitude desert inhabited by around 3 lakh people. The region is considered ecologically fragile due to its extreme climate conditions, scarce vegetation, and limited water resources. Most people are dependent on agriculture as a means of livelihood.

A separate territory was a long-pending demand of the Ladakhis but they were expecting one with constitutional safeguards – somethingthat was categorically denied by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government earlier this month.

Their land and job rights were taken away with the Abrogation of Article 370 on 5 August 2019, and the region was thrown open to people from other states.

Sensing that New Delhi is not in any mood to extend the Sixth Schedule that would safeguard the region and grant limited autonomy to the tribal region, the engineer-turned-educational reformer had announced a "climate fast” back in 2023 in a bid to turn attention towards the region's delicate ecology.

Speaking to The Quint, Wangchuk said that global warming has been melting glaciers in the Himalayan region where Ladakh is located. He also added that shifting weather patterns are resulting in frequent flash floods, landslides, and droughts that are impacting the lives of people living in the sparsely populated villages of the region.

"We are protesting to safeguard the mountains of the Himalayan region from indiscriminate exploitation and mining which have already wreaked havoc in places like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and even Sikkim. All these activities are now poised to impact Ladakh,” he added.

Wangchuk’s Relentless Efforts To Save Ladakh: The ‘Third Pole’ of the Planet

Lately, the glaciers are receding fast and many sectors in Northern India rely on them.

Wangchuk said that Ladakh, which is home to an extensive glacial system, is known as the "Third pole of the planet." It feeds two billion people directly or indirectly.

"If mining industries are introduced in these areas, not only will the local communities suffer, but the entire Northern Indian plains will face water shortages. Therefore, it is crucial that we safeguard these fragile regions as sacred zones of water,” he said.

"For the local people, it's about protecting their region, customs, culture, and land –all of which are enshrined in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, as our forefathers have established 75 years ago," Wangchuk added.

Back in 2015, Wangchuk had invented the 'Ice Stupa', an artificial glacier created by piping mountain streams to tackle the water crisis in Ladakh which faces water scarcity in April-May – the peak farming season.

Since then, the farmers in Leh have benefitted from such Ice Stupas.

Not only that, in 2021, Wangchuk whose life inspired a character in the Bollywood movie 3 Idiots, developed an eco-friendly solar-heated tent that Army personnel can use in extremely cold places like Siachen and Galwan Valley in the Ladakh region.

How Will the Sixth Schedule Save Ladakh’s Ecology?

For the Sixth Schedule to be applicable, the Constitution mandates that a region's population must consist of at least 50 percent of tribal communities. In Ladakh, around 97 percent of its population are tribals.

Wangchuk asserted that they are trying to do everything possible to safeguard the mountains.

"The Sixth Schedule of Article 244, which gives safeguards to these regions, the people, and their cultures where they can determine how these places should be developed without interference from others,” he said. "This is what Ladakh has been demanding for a long time before it was made into a Union Territory (UT)," he added.

Notably, the Sixth Schedule contains provisions that grant indigenous tribes significant autonomy, enabling the establishment of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) with legislative and judicial authority. These councils are empowered to enact regulations concerning various aspects such as land, forest, water, agriculture, health, sanitation, mining, and beyond.

"That was our hope which later turned into uncertainty when the government, as generously as it granted Union Territory status to Ladakh, promised that Ladakh would be safeguarded under the Sixth Schedule but did not fulfil it,” Wangchuk said.

He further argued that if Ladakh is left free for all with no safeguards, there will be mining companies coming. "We hear often they are scouting the mountains and valleys," Wangchuk said, adding that people are apprehensive that huge hotel chains will come up, each potentially bringing in thousands of visitors, that will pose threats to the dry desert ecology of Ladakh.

'The BJP Needs To Keep Its Promise’

Wangchuk said that the BJP needs to fulfil its promise that they made during the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections regarding the “Declaration of Ladakh under the Sixth schedule of the Indian Constitution."

"It's like giving a cheque and if the cheque bounces, then we don't care. Hence, what happens to Ladakh with this promise will set a precedent to the rest of India in all elections to come whether leaders can just say anything and not care later and also get away with it,” he added.

B-8 : Sixty Years of The Beatles - The Memories of A Fan

As I write this article, I've started watching the Disney+ Series called The Beatles: Get Back. It was about the recording of Let It Be, their final album. It talked about the tension and differences among the Fab Four (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr) and the end of an era of music.

What you're going to read is not a theoretical research paper about the history of the four Liverpool lads. It's not about their early stint as The Quarrymen, their original lineup with bassist Stuart Sutcliffe & drummer Pete Best, or their early gigs in Hamburg (Germany). It's not even about how manager Brian Epstein discovered the young talent, or for that matter - how Ringo replaced Pete Best as the drummer. It's about how a fan feels about it and its place in the fan's heart - as the band celebrated sixty years of its first album, Please Please Me (1963) - in March this year.

Talking a bit about myself, I first heard about the Beatles in a childhood story of John Lennon (1940-1980) that got published in Scharda Dubey's book The Best Days of Our Lives. I read it in September 2012. More than three years later (December 9, 2015), I came across a news story about the Beatles Ashram reopening at Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. I know the exact date because the previous day was the 35th death anniversary of Lennon. After reading it, I searched for them on YouTube - and that's when I heard the first ever song of The Beatles - We Can Work It Out. I kept to it for days before exploring the other musical gems. I was fourteen - and in ninth grade back then.

Every teenager faces adolescence-related problems (physical & emotional changes, insecurities, mental health, peer pressure, etcetera). For rescue comes a solution that proves to be life-changing. In my case, it was the music of the four lads from the unknown coastal city of Liverpool (not to mention that it became famous because of the band). Many of their contemporaries came along the way.

My personal Beatles souvenir Collection (Which I have maintained since 2016)

Coming back to The Beatles, my favorite Beatle was Lennon. Seeing them in live performances and music videos, I began practicing their songs on my keyboard - and eventually bought a guitar to match them. Like an ordinary obsessed fan, I bought souvenirs - guitar pics, music CDs, T-shirts, books, phone covers, etcetera online. I don't think any Indian fan could get such stuff in here that easily - even during the band's popularity years. They would get in the USA and UK - where such things would sell like hotcakes. I even made a poster at 15 about the band - which I pasted in my room.

Thanks to the band, I had quite a reputation as a music performer in school, college, and my locality. I would perform their covers at parties and musical events. Although, I couldn't play their songs in school. But thanks to them, I could look beneath myself to find the skills I possess. Hence, I decided to pursue entertainment journalism/writing. I often write similar songs - and try looking for a music producer to record them. When people suggest music software for completing the songs, I politely respond, "They won't have the same fun as the Beatles - and I want to keep that element in my songs."

As their first single, Love Me Do (1962), celebrated its diamond jubilee on October 5 last year - and their debut album on March 22, I can only say that the boys with the mop-tops are immortal and irreplaceable. Even today, I listen to the entire album the way I did seven years ago. I'm sure there are similar fans like me in different parts of the world - who admire the boys and express their admiration and obsession through various methods. With this, I put my pen down.

Best Places To See Snowfall

Watching the snow fall is probably a highlighted point in everybody’s bucket list. So, here’s a list of the best places to see snowfall in India.

Manali

Situated in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh, Manali is an essential when it comes to Hill Stations. With sports activities such as skiing, mountaineering and trekking, the place is a hit among the travellers. October to March is the perfect time to have Manali Trip, while the monsoon season should be avoided completely. One of the great attractions of Manali is the Mall Road. It is full of showrooms, shops, cafes and restaurants that you can visit to get a taste of the local food there. A Himachal Emporium is also located here that you can visit to buy handicraft items that are specialty in this place.

Auli

One of the most popular hill stations of Uttarakhand, Auli is also known as the Auli Bugyal aka a meadow. It is known for its rustic mountain cottages, coniferous and oak forests and stunning view of Himalayas. Stated as one of the highest Ski resorts in the world, Auli is often visited for adventurous activities like skiing and snowboarding. Tourists can also ride in a cable car, spend time in a meadow full of colourful flowers, or go on a trek and enjoy the nature.

Rohtang

Rohtang pass has been named so based on the number of people who have lost their lives trying to cross this area. Dark right? Yet, this place is still one of the best if you want to enjoy some snowfall. Typically, open from June to October, this area is a definite stop on the itinerary of people visiting hill stations like Manali, Kullu, and Leh. Since, Rohtang Pass is just a crossing bridge, there are no restaurants or eateries available here. You will have to carry your own food.

Shimla

In winters, Shimla is like a winter wonderland with a blanket of snow wrapping its arms around the hill station. If you want to enjoy fresh snow in the place, visit anytime between December and February. An Ice-Skating Carnival is held at the place in December that you can visit for some more fun. For shopping Chail, Kufri and Shilon Bagh are the ideal stops. Don’t forget to pack your woolens as the temperature in Shimla drops to -2°C at night.

Dalhousie

Dalhousie with its misty mountains, pine valleys and natural landscapes has an old-world charm to it. The place even has Victorian style mansions to complete the picture. Mystic boat tours in striking lakes, Chamera Lake, and Ganji Pahari are some of the major attractions of this Hill Station. You can try paragliding, trekking, hiking, outdoor camping, and horse-riding to make your trip a memorable one. The best time to visit this place would be from March to May.

Bir-Billing

A land of mountains and tea estates, Bir-Billing is a hub for adventure sports like trekking, paragliding and camping. Bir and Billing are at a distance of 14 km from each other with Billing being the take off point for paragliding and Bir being the landing point. The whole region offers a beautiful scenery to the visitors. Bir also houses a lot of Tibetans in the Bir Tibetan colony, after their exile from Tibet in 1960’s. Therefore, you can see a lot of their culture including Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in this place.

Dharamshala

Famous for being the holy residence of Dalai Lama, Dharamshala is a peaceful city located in Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by Cedar forests, the place is known for the peaceful environment in gives its visitors. For a deeper look of the place, you can trek through the beautiful Dhauladhars, an easy and pleasurable trek. You must try the famous Kangra tea of the place which is often counted amongst the best in the country.

Chandrashila

Chandrashila meaning the moon rock is the peak of the Chandranath Parvat. The Tungnath temple of Panch Kedar stands tall on this peak. It is one of the most frequented treks of Uttarakhand and offers a panoramic view of various Himalayan peaks. If you decide to go for the Chandrashila Trek you will have the chance of crossing through Verdant Meadows, deodar forests and the Tungnath shrine.

Mcleodganj

Situated near Dharamshala, Mcleodganj is a mix of Tibetan and British culture. Also called the Little Lhasa, this region is full of lush greenery and majestic hills. In Himachal Pradesh Mcleodganj is the place with one of the most beautiful landscapes. Some of the most famous monasteries like the Namgyal Monastery and Tsuglagkhang can be found here. You must visit the Dal Lake if you want a quiet picnic.

Triund

Triund is situated on the dhauladhar mountains and boasts of a beautiful mix of rhododendron, oak and deodar forests. The Triund trek can easily be done by anyone apart from the last one kilometer which is known as the 22 curves, the most tiring part of the journey. Except for January and February due to heavy snowfall, Triund can be visited at any point in the year.

Sethan

Sethan is a Buddhist Village located at a distance of 12 km from Manali. If your goal is complete, relaxation away from the civilization this place will be perfect for you as not many people know about it. Sethan is the beginning point of trek to Indrasana Peak. You will not find any adventurous sports or interesting activities to keep your mind which means you can spend a few days with yourself and the beautiful view of the valley instead.

Tosh

Tosh is located at the far end of Parvati Valley and is completely untouched by the modern life. It has a hippie culture and seems like a completely different world. The whole village is stunning in its simplicity and natural beauty with river Parvati flowing through it. People often visit it to take part in the Kasol-Tosh trek and to get their dose of adrenaline. Tosh is also known for its cannabis plantations and Kheerganga trek route.

Jalori Pass

Jalori Pass is located between Shimla and Kullu and is open all year except for peak winter (December-February) due to heavy snowfall. The whole pass way is quite risky to drive on due to its uneven and bumpy path. Vehicles have often been swept away in the snow. Therefore, mid-June to mid-December is the best time to navigate through the snow laden path and take part in the Jalori Pass trek.

How his Singing Career Started?

MYPENCILDOTCOM: You’re an exceptional singer. How did you begin your singing career?

Jubin Nautiyal: As far as I remember, music has always been with me. It is something that has made me find peace in myself, get away from the chaos and get a tranquil soul. Being precise music started when I was at a very young age, I was always drawn towards music. However, my father had a passion for music that played a major role in my career. As it led me to understand music better than other stuff that I was working on at that time. I always felt a connection with music ever since I got to know about it, music kind of grew along with me. I had music as a subject in college and my school as well, and I was always intense about my love for music. It was in 10th standard when I realised that I want to pursue my career in music. It was always about that 1-hour music at night that made me happy. It just made me who I am today.

MYPENCILDOTCOM: You too must’ve had many ups and downs in your career. What did those ups and downs teach you?

Jubin Nautiyal: In my opinion ups and downs are a crucial part of life and are necessary for a human being to evolve. Especially in the life of an artist, as an artist, it is important to see the downs in life and watch yourself rise above those downs to the ups. These ups and downs support you to be grounded no matter how successful you become. The main thing that these ups and downs taught me was, how to sail through life’s phases. It means that you shouldn’t work to impress others but yourself.

You’re like a rubber string the more the world pulls you down, the more you rise above the odds. For me, becoming a promising successful artist was more crucial than becoming a successful artist.

Latest Release :

MYPENCILDOTCOM: We’re all big fans of your music. Tell us something about your latest releases.

Jubin Nautiyal: I am delighted to hear that. Well, my third wave of music was released recently, I have released 4 top songs of the country and I am extremely enthusiastic to hear the feedback on them. First is ‘Barsaat ki Dhun’ which is trending from day 1, the second is ‘Hanjugam’ which is a delightfully romantic song from the movie ‘Bhuj’, then there is ‘Dil Lauta Do’ which is a classic single with Sunny and Saiyami, and then there is ‘ Raataan Lambiyan’ from the movie Shershah which is a love ballad. Now I have come up with another classic song on the 9th of August. Post that I am going to take a month’s break before I come up with another wave of songs. I am extremely delighted with the overwhelming response of the audience. I am grateful for all the comments and the love from the audience.

MYPENCILDOTCOM: How have you been able to use social media during these unprecedented times? Are you finding that you use it, even more, to stay connected to fans and other musicians?

Jubin Nautiyal: Before the pandemic struck, I didn’t spend much time on social media, but covid gave me time to understand social media. Honestly, I was reluctant to use it because of the privacy issues and its nasty environment. Over the years I have gathered friends who love me and want to be connected with me. I also make sure that I don’t overuse it. Lately, I watch people sitting together but engaged in some other world. I always try to make the best use of it. Connecting to other musicians is always via phone calls but with the fans, it is social media, they give unbiased opinions on my work.

Jubin Nautiyal: Talent plays a major role in people’s lives. In whichever field you are, there are gonna be people behind a table who will judge you. In the line of artists, we are millions and billions of people who work on a song. We might make an average song and it turns out to be a hit, and at times you make a massive song that does not get support from the audience. I suppose this is what is the best essence of our work, as in we don’t just have a couple of people behind the table judging us. In the field of music and other artistic fields, your work speaks. An artist always enjoys expressing himself/herself. Talent is something inner. People think it is a promotion that plays a major role but it is the art that brings success. It is important to just express yourself as an artist and then let people see how you shine bright. This is what talent is.

Support In fulfilling dreams?

MYPENCILDOTCOM: Your parents must’ve had a major role in your music career. How did your parents support you in fulfilling your dreams?

Jubin Nautiyal: The entire credit for my music career goes to my loving parents. It is never easy for a kid to step out into this harsh world. When I stepped out of this small town and went to Mumbai. My parents backed me up financially, emotionally and they became the backbone of my music. It took me a while to realise that we had finally made my dream come true. Everything that I am today is because of the unending support and love from my parents.

MYPENCILDOTCOM: You’re from Dehradun, which is one beautiful small town. How connected are you to the people who live there and how much do you miss it?

Jubin Nautiyal: I have been living in my hometown for 2 years now and it has my heart.

Dehradun is like that town in Lord of the rings ‘Hobbit’ where everybody knows everybody and are strongly connected. People spend as much time as possible with each other. The locals have rich cultural values. I feel Dehradun is a part of me and I have friends here who I am in touch with always, we love exploring, trekking. I am proud to have been born in such a rich and beautiful city in the heart of Uttarakhand.

MYPENCILDOTCOM: Today you’re the heartthrob of the entire nation. How was your first on-stage performance and how has your journey been since then?

Jubin Nautiyal: With the years passing by, I realised how deeply my music has sown seeds in the hearts of people. I am usually surrounded by people giving me support and love throughout my journey including my team. There are a whole bunch of people behind a successful artist. My first performance was when I was around 6 years old, I was hiding my face behind the lyrics’ paper because I was scared. From that day till today, there is a lot that my journey has taught me. I say ‘ Main Ek Safar main hoon aur main use Safar main rehna Chahta hoon’ I work well when I am on a journey rather than at a destination. I always want to keep growing as an artist and more as a human being.

MYPENCILDOTCOM: From where have you got the inspiration to never give up and keep going? How do you suggest it to your near and dear ones?

Jubin Nautiyal: My family has been my greatest support system. My two beautiful elder sisters, my strong mother and my doting father.

Apart from this my manager Mr Khanna, my cameraman Mr Yash, my producers Mr Ibrahim, Mr Adityadev. It is pure love that binds us all together. They always keep me going regardless of the situation. I’m grateful to them for their support and love. I would also like to mention my team at T-series Mr Raj, Mr Shivam, Ms Sonal, Mr Bhushan Kumar. We together make a spectacular team and give the audience the best of our potential. My inspiration is my father, we come from a region called Jaunsar Bawar which is a backward region. The people out there are full of humility and self-respect, my father comes from a farmers family and still proved to be a successful good man. My mother is my inspiration, the values that she gave me. I manage to get up every time I fall just because of my mother.

Responsibility of human’s towards other living beings.

Responsibility is the fact of being accountable to someone or something, likewise as human beings (the dominant species ) being a part of this whole ecosystems not only the advantage of controlling the environment but also holds us accountable for the impacts. But are we human’s considering them? Are we working on them? Rather do we even have an idea what the responsibility is? So hence my topic will be dealing with the responsibility of an individual human and responsibilities of the humankind towards other species which are animals, plants, rivers, sea etc. And what way are we currently dealing with it and what way we actually should.

• So what are these responsibility of human towards other living beings?

For instance, let’s keep it quite clear that the universe works with giving and take if we are talking something we need to give in return and if we don’t opt to do that there are consequences. So stating the responsibility point-wise it would go

1. If we are taking wood for the paper it is our responsibility that in return we need to plant more trees.

2. If we are using plastic even after knowing it’s an adverse consequence it is our responsibility to recycle them.

3. If we are using waterways as transport it is our responsibility to take proper measures to protect sea life.

4. Of we are emitting carbon dioxide it is our responsibility to plant more trees and increase oxygen.

So the problem of development arises when these responses are under looked hence the major problems would like to highlight are Deforestation, Animal cruelty, Endangered Species, carbon dioxide and plastic waste.

• why don’t we obey our responsibilities?

Starting from a scientific point of view it seems that we should focus on first and foremost on our own survival and prosperity, even if it means leaving this planet devoid of life. In terms of evolution, the only purpose of life is to survive and continue to survive for as long as possible. Even if we take into account our added concept of happiness, what seems to matter is that we, as a species, are happy. But what we are not under response that the harm or less we think about other species the more it is revolting against us, not now not currently but surely and the results of years of ignorance are been seen in the recent decade.

• What are the approaches to fulfil the responsibilities

There are various approaches with respect to the individual’s problems to state in points like

1. To reduce plastic – ban plastic production, avoid plastic consumption in the unnecessary mode, recycle the used plastic, reuse until damage and many more.

2. To reduce carbon dioxide- CDR methods include afforesting, agricultural practices that sequester carbon in the soils, bio-energy with carbon capture and storage, ocean fertilization enhanced weathering, and direct air capture when combined with storage.

3. Approaches to protecting endangered species -Scientists tell us the best way to protect endangered species is to protect the special places where they live. Wildlife must have places to find food, shelter and raise their young. Logging, oil and gas drilling, over-grazing and development all result habit destruction.

4. Approaches to stop animal cruelty-Be a responsible pet owner,

Be an example of kindness to other pets, Intervene if you witness animal cruelty.

Report animal cruelty, abuse or neglect,

Teach your children to have respect for animals,

Demand stricter laws for the protection of animals.

5. Approaches to stop deforestation- Plant a Tree where you can, Go paperless at home and in the office, Buy recycled products and then recycle them again,

Buy certified wood products, Support the products of companies that are committed to reducing deforestation.

• What are the success stories, are there any responsible individuals and organizations dealing with these problems?

It would wrong if I say the whole humankind is resisting the responsibilities which are not so because there are individuals, organizations and government trying to make a change, trying to develop the idea of responsibly amongst people or set an example like- success stories

Deforestation -

The Chipko Andolan or the Chipko movement is a movement that practiced methods of Satyagraha where both male and female activists from Uttarakhand played vital roles, including Gaura Devi, Suraksha Devi, Sudesh Devi, Bachni Devi and Chandi Prasad Bhatt, Virushka Devi and others.

Saalumarada Thimmakka, also known as Aalada Marada Timakka, is an Indian environmentalist from the state of Karnataka, noted for her work in planting and tending to 385 banyan trees along a four-kilometre stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kuduro. She has also planted nearly 8000 other trees.

Animal cruelty-

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar on Saturday responded to Kapil Dev’s statement on his idea of a made-for-television three-match ODI series between India and Pakistan to raise funds for the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak, Shoaib Akhtar said that he respected Kapil Dev but the whole world needs money in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

““I don’t think Kapil bhai understood what I was trying to say. Everyone is going to be trapped economically. This is the time to put our heads together and generate revenues. The global audience would be hooked by a match. Kapil said he doesn’t need the money and he surely doesn’t. But everyone else does. I think this suggestion will come into consideration soon,” Akhtar told Vikrant Gupta – Senior Executive Editor, Aaj Tak.

“I had said that I know India more than even Imran Khan himself. I have traveled to many areas and interacted with many people there. I keep telling people here what Indians are all about. Our countries have a lot of poverty. I am saddened when people are suffering. As a human and as a Muslim, it is my responsibility to help as much as I can,” Akhtar said.

Kapil Dev had rejected Akhtar’s proposal of a closed-door series to jointly raise funds to fight the deadly virus both in India and Pakistan. Kapil Dev had said the proposal is not feasible.

Akhtar has spent a lot of time in India as a commentator and he claimed that he knew India better than the Pakistan PM. He fondly recalled his days in Mumbai during the World T20 in 2016, the last time he came to India for work.

“After Pakistan, I have recieved maximum amount of love from India. I am forever grateful about the love I have received from the people of India. I have travelled the whole of India. From Himachal Pradesh to Kerala to Uttarakhand,” Akhtar added.

“So I was only asking what options we had if nothing happens for the next six months. What will all the people, who are employed because of cricket, do? What will happen to those whose livelihoods depend on cricket? The only option we have is holding a fundraising match. Maybe it leads to betterment in the relationship. I am talking about a larger perspective,” he said.

Sounds like bullshit, right? It’s actually incredibly motivating. I like to pinpoint my heroes and the folks that i look up to, and then search my soul and my heart and my experiences and try to find one thing that i think they’d admire. It doesn’t have to be huge. It just has to be enough to break out of the idea that you are a less than person.

Ridhima Pandey was just nine years old in 2017 when she filed a lawsuit against the Indian government for failing to take action against climate change. Pandey’s fierce, astounding passion for the environment is not accidental. Her mother is a forestry guard and her father an environmental activist; and the whole family was displaced by the Uttarakhand floods of 2013, which claimed hundreds of lives.

In Kenya Kaluki Paul Mutuku has been actively involved in conservation since college, where he was a member of an environmental awareness club, and has been a member of the African Youth Initiative on Climate Change since 2015. Raised in rural Kenya by a single mother, Mutuku’s vigorous activism, like Pandey’s, was inspired by the direct challenges his family (and wider community) faced from the effects of climate change: “Growing up, I witnessed mothers cover kilometres to fetch water,” he says.

For years, young people across the world have been campaigning to draw attention to the crisis our planet faces, and to tackle it. Yet it seems the media is only interested in one young climate activist.

Last year Nina Gualinga, an indigenous activist from the Ecuadorian Amazon since the age of eight, won the WWF’s top youth conservation award. At 15, Autumn Peltier from the Anishinaabe people of Canada, is a veteran clean water and climate advocate. And Leah Namugerwa is a 15-year-old Ugandan activist.

There are many more whose names we rarely, if ever, hear. Yet, frustratingly, these other activists are often referred to in the media as the “Greta Thunberg” of their country, or are said to be following in her footsteps, even in cases where they began their public activism long before she started hers – their own identities and work almost completely erased by a western media that rarely recognises progress outside its own part of the world.

This tendency of the media to present Thunberg as the one who calls, and the others existing only to heed her call, is problematic, especially for those black and brown activists whose media invisibility leads to invisibility to organisations whose help they could greatly benefit from. This “white saviour” narrative invalidates the impact of locals working in their communities, and perpetuates the stereotype of “the native with no agency” who cannot help themselves. As an African I find these portrayals deeply offensive. It is insulting to present the members of the communities most threatened by climate change as passive onlookers who are only now being spurred on by the “Thunberg effect”.

Why did it take a Thunberg for the UN to organise its first youth climate summit? Those most affected should not be exiled to the fringes of the conversation. These other activists are being told their works, their contributions, don’t matter. The privileging of one campaigner’s narrative over others creates a world where Namugerwa would mention a Swedish teenager she only heard about a year ago as inspiration, but not Wangari Maathai, the environmentalist from neighbouring Kenya who won the Nobel peace prize in 2004. One could argue that it is natural for Namugerwa to find inspiration in a young girl close to her in age, but it is also likely that Maathai’s Green Belt Movement influenced her and her friends’ decision to plant trees on their birthdays to help the environment.

Planting trees. Collecting litter. Striking for the environment. I am in awe of all the young people calling attention to a very real and urgent problem. I applaud all of them for doing what they can, in big and small ways, to combat climate change. I must also acknowledge the young children in Kenya and Nigeria and other parts of the developing world who make toys out of recycled plastic and metal, and who would probably not know to call themselves climate advocates.

I applaud Bangladesh for being the first country to ban plastic bags in 2002, and Rwanda for banning non-biodegradable plastic in 2008 (and Kigali for being named by the UN as Africa’s cleanest city). One day at a time, our collective efforts may yet save the planet.

And while we continue to work towards that goal, the moral thing for western media to do is to also highlight the contributions of the black and brown saviours trying to make that happen so that when future generations talk of it, this will not be the story of a single narrative.

How Travelling Changed My Perspective on Getting Married and Having Kids.

In India, our personal choice to get married and have kids is everyone’s business. I’ve been inundated by these questions hundreds of times, but rarely has anyone asked me if I’m happy, content and excited about the way my life is shaping up. For the record, I am, on most days.

While many of my peers have chosen the well-trodden path of “settling down”, I prefer my seemingly unsettled ways. In 2019 alone, I’ve spent a month losing myself amid the awe-inspiring wonders of Iran and another, digital nomad-ing in Armenia. I’m typing this post sitting in a handwoven swing, hearing the chatter of birds, on the balcony of my current abode – a stone hut, surrounded by a gorgeous old oak forest in the Uttarakhand Himalayas.

Despite being financially independent, in a mature relationship and passionate about what I do, I’m constantly told that I need to settle down. That I’m somehow shirking my responsibilities and being selfish.

This stems from a deep societal conditioning that, sometimes even unknown to myself, I’ve been unlearning on my travels. After putting it off for many years, I finally decided to write this post for fellow dreamers, adventurers and rebels, who dream of doing life differently.

There’s already a lot said and written in favor of marriage and kids, so all I seek to do is share an alternative perspective I’ve learnt on the road, one that I hope will convince you to think, question and consciously make your choices:

Contrary to what Indian society will have you believe, these are intensely personal choices.

The concept of marriage came about some 4,000 years ago in ancient Greece, when humans began settling down and practicing agriculture. The idea was to make a woman a man’s property, and ensure that the kids she gave birth to really belonged to him. Over time, religion became part of the equation, making marriage a pious affair, one that signified stability. However, it was only in the Middle Ages, that thanks to the French, “romantic love” became associated with marriage.

See where I’m going with this? The concept of marriage came about as a practical (albeit patriarchal) transaction to arrange society. 4,000 years ago. And I dare say times have changed. Many women, especially in urban India, are financially independent, command equal rights and choose their own romantic partners. Binding a relationship with a legal contract or having it blessed by a religious authority is no longer a practical need. It’s a very personal choice, and unlike what our family, friends, relatives and the nosy world out there would have us believe, we have every right to choose.

These thoughts first occurred to me while living with tribal communities in Maharashtra and Odisha, where live-in relationships are the norm. Isolated from technology and the evolution of marriage in the rest of the country, their traditional wisdom recognizes the practicality of a partnership based on mutual trust, rather than legal or religious binding. But more than that, women are free to pursue their own path and not judged for their choices, just like men.

I mean no offence to people who choose to walk down the well-trodden path. That’s exactly what it means to have a choice.

As much as you think otherwise, your life may never be the same again.

I often receive emails from individuals who lament that they chose to get married or have children without fully comprehending its impact on the rest of their lives. When we make such an irreversible decision in our twenties or early thirties, we need to contemplate alternate viewpoints rather than accepting the only one offered to us.

Think about it: raising a kid is a full-time job that’ll take atleast 15 full years of one’s life. I’m 31 and have no desire whatsoever to be married or to procreate. Yet I’m constantly reminded that “the clock is ticking”. If you ask me, that’s probably one of the worst reasons to change the entire course of your life. Worse still, is when people tell me they’re thinking of having children because they need something more in life, they’re bored of their regular schedules or they need to stir up their relationship.

The more I travel, the more I realise that there are a thousand ways to live your life, but most people only choose one. The work – home – sleep schedule tends to breed boredom and an absence of purpose or meaning in life. And the only recourse society seems to suggest is to have a kid. But think deeper about it and you’ll find so many ways to get more out of life – work for the environment, fight for animal rights, teach someone a skill, learn a language, use your privileges to help create alternative livelihoods, travel with purpose, start a company to solve a pressing challenge, chase a forgotten dream, take some risks!

People will criticise your choices no matter what.

If you’ve grown up in an Indian family, you’re all too familiar with the “log kya kahenge?” (what will people say?) line of thinking. It’s incredulous – and mildly funny – how so many of our life choices are made to appease what our friends and society at large think of us.

But perhaps you’ve heard the story of the farmer, his son and a donkey? No matter what the farmer did, people ridiculed him. And that’s true for everything we do in life. If you don’t get married, people will wonder what’s wrong with you. If you do, they’ll come to your wedding and criticize the food and the skin color of the bride and how much the groom earns. If you don’t have a kid soon enough, they’ll wonder what’s wrong with you. If you have three kids, they’ll laugh at you for procreating so much.

I’ve met many interesting people on my travels. Social entrepreneurs, naturalists, activists, poets, nuns, writers, musicians – and the one trait that’s common across all of them is that they don’t fear criticism. They don’t try to fit in.

Ultimately, we are the only ones who have to live with our choices. That could be a life with or without a legal partner, with or without kids. And it’ll be criticized by others anyway.

The carbon footprint of having a kid is high but there’s an alternative.

It’s 2019 and we know that climate change is real. But the impact of our consumption choices never hit me as hard as when I went to volunteer on a remote island in Cuba. Once stunning corals looked dismal, uninhabited beaches were covered in algae and the seabed lay littered with plastic. According to the WWF Living Planet Report, wildlife and marine life populations on earth have declined significantly, over just two generations.

Luckily, there are some things we can still do as individuals: Choose not to create more humans on this overpopulated earth, eliminate meat and dairy from our diet (or atleast reduce them significantly) and reassess our transport, water and energy needs.
