Conversion Corner: Various Gaming Mechs part 3
Metal Gear Rex (Metal Gear Solid)
A mecha that a mecha anime otaku helped build, today we will be looking at perhaps the most iconic of the machines that bears the name “Metal Gear.”
Based originally on the designs of Aleksandr Granin, the Metal Gear Rex was the latest walking tank design at the turn of the millennium, a powerful armored vehicle with a distinctive jaw-like cockpit and heavy armament with missiles, machine guns, and even an experimental laser cannon.
However, the vehicle’s true purpose was defined by it’s primary weapon, a powerful railgun which, while capable of firing powerful high-velocity rounds, was actually meant to launch propellant-less nuclear warheads from anywhere in the world without detection by conventional early-warning systems, making it a highly secret and highly illegal weapon system capable of precision strikes on civilian populations (for after all, that is what nuclear weapons are for) without the fear of immediate reprisal.
Naturally, before it could be finished, a group of special operatives turned terrorists turned on the staff at the Shadow Moses facility and threatened to use the weapon against the US unless their demands were met. I can’t go into much further detail without going on a tangent into the wild and wooly world of the MGS plotline, so I’ll leave it at that. Suffice to say that the original Metal Gear Rex was wrecked and most of it’s test data destroyed, though some did make it out to spawn further generations of walking machine.
That was not to be the end of Rex, however, as it later got fixed up by the heroes and went toe to toe with a next generation Metal Gear, proving that the original design still had plenty of merit.
For the purposes of this build, we will assume a tier 13 mech.
Gargantuan legionnaire Operators 1; PP 1 (3 per turn, max 7) Speed 70 ft.; Senses blindsense (vibration) 30 ft., darkvision 120 ft., low-light vision
Defense
HP 140; SP 29; Hardness 7 EAC 33; KAC 33 Fort +13; Ref +12 Immunities construct immunities
Offense
Melee hammerfist (lower limb - 5d4+22 B; analog, penetrating) Ranged laser rifle (frame – 5d6+13 F critical burn; automatic) or missile battery (frame – 5d4+13 F&P) or rail gun (modified rocket launcher; upper limb – 5d8+13 P; explode 10 ft., unwieldy) rotary cannon (frame – 2d6+13 P; automatic) Space 20 ft.; Reach 20 ft. Strength +9
Systems
Power Core mk 2 dynamo; Lower Limbs heavy biped; Upper Limbs precision arms (+1 melee, +1 ranged); Auxiliary autotarget, entry hatch, plow plating, reconnaissance array;
For this build, I realized that there was no rail gun option for mechs yet, so I modified the rocket launcher, what with it specifically having a special attack based on anchoring for long range, to be the base for it. The other weapons are somewhat weak to represent their antipersonnel and antitank nature. I also gave it auxiliary tools based on the radome scanner of the Rex in-game. The result is a mech built for ranged artillery first rather than melee, but is able to hold it’s own at close range as well.
That does it for today, but we’re only halfway through, with the next one being a subject from a game actively about mechs!

Archibald, the quadrupedal golem part 1: LEGG mechanism
I've been thinking about quadrupedal robots a lot lately. They're cheaper than hexapods, but not as hard as bipeds. And they can look really cool too!
I haven't build a real robot in a long time, so now I'm starting to design Archibald the Arcanopod. He is going to be special, because he will look like a fantasy golem.
I don't know at all how I'm going to make him look like a golem. I'm not an artist, I'm an engineer! I don't want to design parts and then "prettify" them, because I suck at artistic modeling and it would be painful. Currently I'm thinking about just printing a functionnal framework and then use polymer clay to mold a "rocky armor" around Archibald and paint it. Which is going to be fun because I don't even know how I want him to look like. Even to draw, stone golems are not the easiest honestly.
The cool thing about the "armor" idea is that if I'm smart about it, I can later model other armor for Archibald, like, oh I don't know, mecha armor :) Or maybe some pokemon armor! There are a bunch of pokemon I could try to do with the body shape I have in mind, like metagross or Gigalith.
For now, I have a leg mechanism I wan to try out:
Tumblr media
It's completely overengineered with two four-linkage mechanisms chained together. It's cool because it only uses two servomotors instead of three, too! So I can more easily power and control this thing when I have 4 of those. The first mechanism allows for a near perfect straight motion when advancing, which should make the movement really smooth!
I haven't dealt with servos in a long time, so right now I'm just printing this test mechanism. Will update tomorow when I tested the mechanism. Propably.
I will keep posting about Archibald over time. I want to use this site more, and also it will force me to actually build it lol.

Conversion Corner: Various Gaming Mech part 1
Ride Armor DRA-00 Kangaroo Variant (Mega Man X3)
One of the coolest things that Starfinder introduced was a way to play mecha pilots, granting players the power to face extremely powerful threats from behind the cockpit of a physics-defying titan of steel and starmetals. Depending on the campaign, said mechs might be called upon for the party to face off against a threat normally above their weight class, while other campaigns might sport the party in mechs almost all of the time. Additionally, the characters can have one big mech or multiple small ones… you can even combine the two by having the mecha combine into one for some super sentai/power rangers action!
With all that in mind, I’m taking a week to convert various mecha from across video gaming, since mecha are a popular topic in that medium, starting with a Ride Armor from the Megaman X series!
Ride armors are open-topped single-pilot mecha built to be used by reploids, originally meant for construction and hazardous environments, such armors were quickly adapted for combat usage, letting a smaller humanoid reploid pack the same punch as a larger reploid and still be able to climb out and perform tasks more suited to their true size.
The Ride Armor DRA-00, or Chimera from Mega Man X3 was designed with modularity in mind, a base frame, and can be upgraded by X with different loadouts as long as he finds the right parts scattered throughout the stages.
Today we are looking at the Kangaroo variant, which outfits the fists of the mecha with heavier spiked fists that can detach on a long chain, extending the reach of the machine quite a bit, making it the variant that X would use for sheer attacking power, rather than mobility unlike the Eagle and Frog variants.
For the purposes of this build, we will assume the Kangaroo is a Tier-7 mecha
 DRA-00 Kangaroo
Huge skirmisher Operators 1; PP 1 (rate 2, max 6) Speed 80 ft. Senses blindsense (vibration) 30 ft., darkvision 120 ft., low-light vision
Defense
HP 81 ; SP 17; Hardness 3 EAC 26; KAC 28 Fort +9; Ref +10 Immunities construct immunities
Offense
Base Attack Bonus: +9
Melee Chainwhip (upper limb – 5d4+13 B; analog, reach, trip) or Hammerfist (upper limb – 5d4+13 B; analog, penetrating) or Hammerfist (upper limb – 5d4+13 B; analog, penetrating) Space 15 ft.; Reach 15 ft. (20 ft with chain whip) Strength +6
Systems
Power Core Mk 1 Dynamo; Lower Limbs Fast Biped; Upper Limbs Assault Arms; Auxiliary Entry Hatch, Thrusters; Upgrades Rapid Reflexes, Reinforced Frame, Unbreakable Armor
I went with the assault arms to represent the rapid-fire attacks of the kangaroo armor, as well as the chainwhip to represent launching one of the fists on a retractable chain. While these weapons don’t pack the biggest punch, they are fairly strong. What’s more, the fast legs and thrusters make this machine surprisingly agile, able to rush in and pound foes to dust.
Yes, I am aware that most actual ride armors are size large at best, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. In any case, this has been a fun little start to this special, look forward to more mechs throughout the week!

You know what idea has visited me just now? A a more grounded mecha anime like those from “real robot“ style series such as VOTOMs, but it’s something zany like Kelly’s Heroes. That’d be a fun watch. I hear Heavy Object gets into that territory, but I myself would like something with biped/walker mecha.

Name: Spindrift
Debut: Super Mario 64
Hey! Remember that post about Choppa(h) that we made a couple months ago? Well, I sure hope you liked it! And I hope you like the concept of “non-distinct plant creature with vertical helicopter blades” because... there’s a whole bunch of them! Starting with Spindrift here.
Tumblr media
Spindrift is... An orb? With a flower head? If you bounce on them you get to do a spin-jump, which is... pretty cool, I guess. Spindrifts never reappeared beyond the DS remake, but they were in a beta screenshot for New Super Mario Bros., not to mention...
Tumblr media
Name: Torkdrift
Debut: Super Mario Odyssey
Hey! Did you know that Torkdrift is a mechanical Spindrift?! I sure didn’t, until I was researching this post! Its Japanese name is Mekafuwafuwa-san, with  Fuwafuwa-san being Spindrift’s name... so, Mecha Spindrift!
Really though, can you blame me? It doesn’t look like a Spindrift at all! Even so, it’s quite weird in its own right... Like, some kind of flower-based UFO? And do my eyes deceive me... are those eyestalks? Hooray! You just can’t go wrong by giving anything eyestalks.  Anyway, you find Torkdrift in the Steam Gardens area, where he’s sucking up all the flowers for Bowser’s wedding. Their whole boss fight is based around smashing their glass container with an Uproot... once you confront them, they’ll get mad and say, in classic robot all-caps:
“FLOWERS FLOWERS FLOWERS. MUST HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS. DO NOT MESS WITH ME, BIPED.”
Which is the first time I’ve seen biped used as an insult. It... kind of hurts, honestly.
