⚠️PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT⚠️
The Queer Liberation Library is, as the name suggests, a digital library centered around queer literature. They offer library cards to anyone in any place, all you need in order to sign up is an email address. Then you can access their catalog online or through apps like Libby.
When I signed up I received an email that said there’s sometimes a waitlist, but I should have my card within a week or else someone would get back to me within that timeframe to explain if I had to wait longer. I ended up getting my card after only a couple of days.
Their website is very accessible and easy to use. My favorite features are the button at the bottom of the screen which lets you switch between light and dark mode, and the Quick Exit banner along the top of the page that doesn’t go away regardless of where you navigate on the site.
This is such an incredible resource and I can’t believe I didn’t know about it until very recently. I want every queer person to know about it! They have accounts on most of the major social media sites (such as tiktok, Instagram, even here on tumblr at @queerliblib). There’s also a place on their website where you can suggest books they should add to their catalog.
After you get your card, I’d suggest the first book you read to be Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon. It is a short but powerful little book that I think is an incredibly concise analysis of societal gender-based discrimination, and a great place to start a lot of really important discussions. I listened to the audiobook this morning (it was only an hour long, which is a win for my trash attention span) and I couldn’t believe how good it was for so little page time.
I will absolutely be reading the rest of the Pocket Change Collective (the series which Beyond the Gender Binary is part of) and I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn from them.

Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon
Tumblr media
In Beyond the Gender Binary, poet, artist, and LGBTQIA+ rights advocate Alok Vaid-Menon deconstructs, demystifies, and reimagines the gender binary.
Pocket Change Collective is a series of small books with big ideas from today's leading activists and artists. In this installment, Beyond the Gender Binary, Alok Vaid-Menon challenges the world to see gender not in black and white, but in full color. Taking from their own experiences as a gender-nonconforming artist, they show us that gender is a malleable and creative form of expression. The only limit is your imagination.

Quote
The days that I feel most beautiful are the days that I am most afraid. They tell us to “be ourselves,” but if you listen closely, there’s more to that sentence: “. . . until you make them uncomfortable.”

‘Beyond the Gender Binary‘ by Alok Vaid-Menon is a beautiful dispiction of being non-binary, but also the harsh reality one faces when expressing themselves for who one truly is.

I recently finished reading "Beyond the Gender Binary" by Alok Vaid-Menon and found it super validating. It's a short read (about an hour in audiobook format) but full of impact. ALOK is an internationally acclaimed writer, performer, and public speaker. They are also gender nonconforming, transfeminine and have been a steady voice in the fight for the acceptance of nonbinary and trans folx.
"The gender binary is a publicist who never stops working. It would have you believe that gender non-conformity poses a bigger threat than actual emergencies like climate change. That nonbinary people have access to massive power, even though the majority of us can’t go outside without being attacked. That it’s our fault for being attacked.
That this is about our bodies, not their bigotry. Our presentations, not their policies. That our attackers are just “ignorant,” not “intentional.” That we are new, even though we have always been here." ~ALOK @alokvmenon

"I do not have the luxury of being. I am only seen as doing. As if my gender is something that is being done to them and not something that belongs to me" - Alok Vaid-Menon in Beyond the Gender Binary

anyways i love you people that are both gay and straight, in whatever way that presents. being nonbinary often can mean a complicated relationship to sexuality and how one perceives it within the societal restrictions of homo and heterosexual, and i think bridging those definitions and having "contradictory" labels like lesboy or whatever is really cool. i support and stan he/him lesbians or butch lesbians or she/her gay men or femme gays or she/he pronoun users and whatever else, be it cis or trans or both. if you feel like youre both cis and trans that also rocks. dont let people force you back into a binary within the queer community, stay strong!

As Alok Vaid-Menon says:
"We want a world where boys can feel, girls can lead, and the rest of us can not only exist but thrive. This is not about erasing men and women but rather acknowledging that man and woman are two of many—stars in a constellation that do not compete but amplify one another’s shine."
"We have been taught to fear the very things that have the potential to set us free."
--
I hate that there is such rampant and violent transphobia (it's not just the comments - people are getting hurt and dying. People are in fear).
But isn't it sad that transphobia hurts those who don't consider themselves trans too - like it hurts the people who are doing the hurting. We're all hurting.
