Resplendent Khalis the hawk

What started off as a simple, “Oh, Sunhawk. It’s in the title. She should have a bird companion” idea quickly spiraled into naming the Blorbirb and giving him a whole backstory 🤣 The chokehold this concept has on me cannot be overstated. (Thank you @foibles-fables for being my enabling dumping ground every time I thought of something)

I will spare everyone a monologue, but the simple tale goes:

Talanah and Aloy find him injured on a hunt. Aloy wants to put him out of his misery, but Talanah insists she can nurse him back. So she does and releases him. He stays primarily wild. However, he occasionally visits the Lodge balcony or if Talanah is on a hunt he’ll show up to hang around. Sometimes when she needs a little break from Sunhawk duties, she’ll take a stroll in the Maizelands and he keeps her company 🥹

The end. Hope you enjoyed my brain rot. I probably will draw these two again in some other capacity.

Our first bird, the Superb Lyrebird, is a fancy singing little guy who lives in Australia. He's named for the way his tail feathers look like the lyre instrument! The male bird has a tail consisting of 16 highly modified feathers that, when held upright like in this drawing, look like a lyre. Now, a living lyrebird doesn't hold its tail like that. What happened was a superb lyrebird specimen was prepared for display at the British Museum by a taxidermist who had never seen a live lyrebird. The taxidermist mistakenly thought that the tail would resemble a lyre, and that the tail would be held in a similar way to that of a peacock during courtship display, and so he arranged the feathers in this way. Later, John Gould (who had also never seen a live lyrebird), painted the lyrebird from the British Museum specimen. But even though they don't hold their tails up, the resemblance to the instrument is still very present and interesting!
