What are your ideas on Amphibia’s idea of self-love and how it’s tackled?
I’m afraid I don’t have very in-depth thoughts (or more precisely I hadn’t thought about this idea until asked*). But from my few days brewing on it my answer is: I think it’s idea of self-love is something I would have been grateful for when I was Anne’s age and I think it’s tackled pretty well.
As an addendum, I felt only Anne really had an arc defined by discovering self-love. To me, Marcy’s arc was about coming to term with facing unpleasant things, and Sasha’s was recognizing how she wanted to be a better person/grow. I also don’t see any of the Plantars needing to learn self-love. Sprig might come closest but to me, his arc is more about finding a friend, someone who will actually like him/spend time with him, and it’s less him learning to love himself but finding the friend who will love the himself he already is pretty open about expressing/seems to like.
As to what I mean in more specifics (because of course), I’m having a hard time arranging it my head coherently. But essentially: I felt Anne’s arc to self-love was handled very gradually.
She’s starts out (Best Fronds) as very concerned with what her friends will think if she isn’t agreeable to what they say; she has to be likable, she has to be what others want her to be. But then she meets Sprig (and family) and live in Wartwood, where she has to make decisions on her own/withiut her usual friends. Wartwood is disturbed & distrustful but she earns their trust & respect (Toad Tax). Then later there’s Wally’s bit of “you can be whoever you want to be here” advice and her becoming less worried about whether she’s the “town weirdo” (Wally and Anne). Then there’s the whole Reunion bit with Sprig defending her and saying she’s a good person & brave & not going to be pushed around; she’s someone—as she has presented herself in Wartwood—of value and love (at least in the eyes of this pink frog boy. See this is why I get so emotional about these two?)
I’d say there’s less direct instances in S2a (at least nothing immediately jumps to mind), but by the time she’s there she has had some growth. I think this is most evident in her relationship with Marcy. By the end of her stay in Newtopia, she’s opened up to Sprig (and vice versus) (Hopping Mall). She’s learning to express how she feels and be okay with that. So by the time the show gets to Bessie and Microangelo (I love that ep), she’s happy with herself. (Oh, Tritonio helped, less in his ultimate goal reveal but in instilling in Anne an actually desire to work at something and see herself as worthy as be capable of working at something. Oh, and Stumpy’s statement that her parents would proud of what she did feels like it boosted some kind of ‘You’re ideas may be over the top but they come from a good place.”)
Like omg! To 13 yr old me those kinds subtle and but very clear & audial expressions of my value and worth would have been amazing. Maybe it’s okay to just be the weirdo you are. Maybe others *will* like you. Maybe someone will be your friend even if you share your weird and sentimental feelings. Aaaah! (Heck, I’m in my 30s and I’d still love this).
In that sense, to me, Anne’s self-love grew very much from the space where others (frogs) allowed her to be who she was and as she grew more expressive, she became more sure of herself and the more sure she became the more self-love was genuine. Anyway, I think it’s beautiful.
*this ask reminded me that I’ve been wanting to rewatch Amphibia; I have been reminded that I usually dig my teeth into fandom media when it’s complete, One Piece being the nearest thing to an exception and even then (1) it’s a lot easier to analyze Ace than other characters and (2) I usually narrowly focus or broadly react

Mystery Monday #15: Who is the Plantar family?
Like the 13-year old girl we covered last week, our favorite 68-year old grandfather, 10-year old boy, and baby pollywog have played a lot of roles as well. Let's look through the series and find them.
Prior to the series, Sprig and Polly were living with Hop Pop for several years. Hop Pop saw Sprig as an irresponsible troublemaker and Polly as much more mature.
As of Anne or Beast?, Sprig is the kid who stood up to an angry mob to save an exotic beast, and the family now has a houseguest.
As of Best Fronds, Sprig is Anne's new best friend.
As of Family Shrub, the Plantar family now includes Anne.
As of Plantar's Last Stand, Hop Pop and the Plantar family are no longer trusted by Wartwood, but they are more respected.
As of Grubhog Day, Sprig is briefly "the next town scandal just waitin' to happen", but then he and Anne end up restoring the Plantar name with the puppet show.
During the Civil Wart, Sprig and Polly are the center of attention.
As of Hop Popular, Hop Pop is now universally loved in Wartwood (except by the mayor, but even he respects him now).
As of Cracking Mrs. Croaker, Sprig is now universally liked in Wartwood as well.
As of Family Fishing Trip, Sylvia is now an unofficial Plantar as she is now dating(?) Hop Pop.
As of Fiddle Me This, Sprig and the Plantars are the winners of Wartwood's Got Talent.
As of Anne of the Year, the Plantars are the most popular family in Wartwood and Sprig is Ivy's boyfriend.
As of Reunion (and hinted at in Prison Break), Hop Pop is the hero who sparked rebellions all over Frog Valley.
As of The Ballad of Hopediah Plantar, Hop Pop is again the hero who sparked the rebellion in Bittyburg.
As of A Caravan Named Desire, Hop Pop is briefly the lead actor in a play, but then once again becomes the hero when he turns on Renée and gets her arrested.
In Sprig Gets Schooled, Sprig briefly becomes a student at Newtopia University, and might eventually play that role again.
In Hopping Mall, though it is not a new status, we learn why Sprig and Polly live with Hop Pop instead of their parents. Also, Microangelo joins the family.
In Return to Wartwood, we find out that the Plantars are still universally admired and were sorely missed in Wartwood.
In Marcy at the Gates, Hop Pop floats the idea of expanding the Plantar family even further to include Marcy. This eventually comes to pass in New Wartwood.
In Friend or Frobo?, the Plantar family expands yet again to include Frobo.
As of The New Normal, the Plantars are houseguests to the Boonchuys.
As of Thai Feud, Sprig is officially a Boonchuy family member.
As of Commander Anne, the Plantars are now Resistance Fighters.
And post-series, Hop Pop is a California avocado farmer with his new wife(?) Sylvia, Sprig is an explorer with his girlfriend Ivy, and Polly is a fully grown frog. Also, Joe Sparrow has joined the family and had a kid with Bessie.

Headcanons for Bessie, Joe Sparrow, and MicroAngelo?
I'm sure they have rich lives but not as much as the other characters but here's a few things I can get off the top of my head.
Bessie misses Anne who was able to get to that one spot she likes to be scratched.
Joe Sparrow keeps a few of Marcy's cloaks from her room and lines his nest with them which he's also uses them to keep his Snird (Snail Birds) kids warm.
MicroAngelo went along with Polly and Sprig to the new continent. He feels a bit useless since Frobo can do everything that he's supposed to do and better but he's trying his hardest everyday.

Bessie and Micro-Angelo
:D :D :D 🐌🐌
But onto Marcy... I think this episode shows off how she's still concerned with role-performing. As she tells Anne, "This is your last chance" to live some kind of cool fantasy before going home. I'm ascribing this attitude, personally, to Marcy's nervousness around being social. She can solve problems and puzzles but actually interacting with people -- what is that??! So, it's easier for her socialize via the stories and games she likes. So that's how she processes stuff.
Anne addition: In contrast, Anne's whole thing this ep is basically recognizing that she's genuinely happy with how she sees herself and that's beautiful.

🎶 It’s Tough To Be a God 🎶
...
King is a Titan which are viewed as a God-like figure by the inhabitants of the Boiling Isles and Anne was offered a job as a replacement for a deity after her life is fully lived. ... No, this isn’t a new AU, just a fun n’ silly little one-off piece of fan art. Inspired by a post I saw: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheOwlHouse/comments/uwwu8l/its_tough_to_be_a_god/  and the song of the same name/scene from Road to El Dorado: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NoB4rHA-HEk
...
Edit: Not to say I’ll be drawing more art, but if I were to, these are my casting choices (also, the setting is a mix of Boiling Isles and Amphibia/Newtopia).
Miguel = King; Tulio = Anne; Chel = Marcy; Altivo = Bessie; Armadillo = Microangelo; Chief = Andrias; Tzekel-Kan = Belos; Stone Jaguar = The Core

I think one of the many reasons people misunderstand Marcy so badly is because their compassion feels very real, but it's literally all based on idealization which in turn comes from selfishness. like you cannot take this character's words at surface level. the ease with which they lie to their friends before the big reveal in True Colors is honestly kind of scary; I know there's at least one moment in Bessie & Microangelo where they straight up say "we're probably going home soon!" with absolutely no vocal indication that they're lying other than the word "probably". they don't even sound slightly suspicious.
but that's literally just their character design - they're set up to seem like the most innocent harmless person ever so that we don't see the events of True Colors coming. and it's honestly brilliantly done, but it's clearly too effective if the fandom is anything to go by. if we know that they can put on a mask this easily, and we know their emotional intelligence is low, then I don't understand how it doesn't click with more people that their compassion and kindheartedness has to be at least somewhat of a performance. it doesn't make them a bad person, but episodes like New Wartwood? their "improvements" of the town aren't for the good of the townspeople, it's just what they think will make them appreciated and valued the fastest. essentially if you lack the understanding (after seeing True Colors) that a lot of Marcy's actions - before they change for the better - are motivated by self-centeredness, not genuine goodwill in their heart, you're falling too hard into the trap the writers set
